The Churches of Peace located in the towns of Jawor and Świdnica in the Silesia region of south-western Poland are the largest timber-framed Baroque ecclesiastical buildings in Europe
They were built in the mid-17th century to a scale and complexity unknown in European wooden architecture before or since
following the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia
which concluded the Thirty Years’ War in 1648
The terms of the peace treaty effectively eradicated the Evangelical Church in the Silesian hereditary principalities directly controlled by the Holy Roman Emperor
who constituted the majority of the population in these areas
were deprived of the religious freedom they had hitherto enjoyed and lost almost all of their churches
It was only courtesy of Swedish diplomatic intervention that permission was granted to build three churches
Lengthy and expensive efforts were made to secure imperial consent
imposed exceptionally strict conditions: the churches were to be located beyond town boundaries
within an area strictly defined by imperial officials; they were to be built of wood and clay; they could not feature a tower; and their construction was to be completed within one year
The architect and engineer Albrecht von Säbisch had to reconcile these requirements with the expectations of a large Evangelical community for whom these were to be the only churches
Using traditional materials and technologies
the architect created a set of buildings that represented the pinnacle of timber-framing construction technology
The centuries-long timber-frame tradition allowed carpenters to erect buildings that could survive for hundreds of years
in spite of the impermanence of the materials used
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Jawor was built in 1654–1655 as a rectangular three-aisled basilica with a three-sided chancel of reduced form
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Świdnica was built in 1656–1657 as a three-aisled basilica with a Greek cross ground plan
The third of the Churches of Peace allowed under the Peace of Westphalia was built in Głogów in 1652
Both of the surviving churches feature multi-tier galleries
thanks to which the capacity of building was extended to about seven thousand people each
integrates exuberant Baroque forms and complex imagery into their architectural framework in a unique way that celebrates the coexistence of Baroque art and Lutheran theology
and reflects the social hierarchy of the time
the Churches of Peace are masterpieces of skilled handicraft
Because of their technological complexity and size
the Churches of Peace were never duplicated elsewhere and remain without peer
The total area of the serial inscription amounts to 0.23 ha and the total area of the buffer zones amounts to 12 ha
Criterion (iii): The Churches of Peace are outstanding testimony to an exceptional act of tolerance on the part of the Catholic Habsburg Emperor towards Protestant communities in Silesia in the period following the Thirty Years’ War in Europe
Criterion (iv): As a result of conditions imposed by the Emperor
the Churches of Peace required the builders to implement pioneering constructional and architectural solutions of a scale and complexity unknown before or since in wooden architecture
The success may be judged by their survival to the present day
Criterion (vi): The Churches of Peace bear exceptional witness to a particular political development in Europe in the 17th century of great spiritual power and commitment
Within the boundaries of the serial property are located all the elements necessary to sustain the Outstanding Universal Value of the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica
including the original structures of the wooden frameworks in-filled with clay panels (which are integrally combined with the historical extensions that were added over time)
and the elements of the interior décor and furnishings
In the vicinity of each church but outside the property are located the parish buildings essential for the functioning of the church community
The historically shaped spatial integrity between each church and its surroundings has been preserved
The silhouette of the entire architectural complex is clearly visible in each townscape
The property does not suffer from adverse effects of development and/or neglect
The Churches of Peace survive in fully authentic form
particularly regarding their locations and settings
as evidenced by their unaltered emplacement
the structural system and materials used in their construction
and the preservation of the original function of these Evangelical-Augsburg parish churches
Architectural features (such as galleries and guild and family box pews)
and furnishings that were added after the initial construction are consistent with the original architectural forms and maintain a cohesive artistic unity
Renovation and conservation work (including preventive conservation measures) carried out on the churches has preserved their Outstanding Universal Value and authenticity by slowing down the processes of deterioration
A full programme of conservation is applied solely to individual elements of the décor and furnishings
The only new technological elements introduced in both buildings are alarm and fire prevention systems
There are no potential threats and risks identified for the property
The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica
which are regularly used for religious services
are legally protected under the regulations on the protection of monuments
implemented by the national monument protection services
Responsibility for their guardianship and management lies with their owners
the Evangelical-Augsburg parishes in Jawor and Świdnica
which are legally entitled to carry out and finance conservation works
Renovation and conservation tasks in each case require approval of the planned work and relevant permission from the state conservation services
Sustaining the Outstanding Universal Value
and integrity of the property over time will require the development of a Management Plan as a strategic document in order to ensure the effective protection of the churches and their surroundings
The 2025 European Senior Team Chess Championship will be held from 4th April 2025 (day of arrival) to 14th April 2025 (day of departure) in Swidnica
The event will played in two age categories: 50+ and 65+
open and women’s sections separately
Each National Federation of the European Chess Union has the right to register an unlimited number of teams in both categories: Open and Women 50+ & 65+
Each team should consist of four (4) players and optionally one (1) reserve player
The teams may represent a National Federation or any regional structure of a National Federation (club teams
but all players must be members of the same federation
Each tournament will be played in 9 rounds
with time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment for every move played
The total prize fund of the event is 8.000 EUR
The application deadline is 4th March 2025
with benefits for teams who register earlier
The events will be played at the ***+Hotel Esperanto which is also one of the official hotels of the Championship

A man has been detained on suspicious of painting graffiti that recently appeared on the walls around a historical church in Poland and which insulted Prime Minister Donald Tusk
The suspect has been charged with the crime of “insulting a public official or a constitutional body”
which carries a potential prison sentence of up to two years
and with damaging culturally important property and monuments
which can be punishable by up to ten years in prison

— Wyborcza.pl Wrocław (@wyborczawroclaw) January 20, 2024
The graffiti appeared during the night of 12 to 13 January on the wall surrounding the Holy Trinity Church of Peace in Świdnica
a 17th-century Protestant wooden church that is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List
The slogans painted onto the said “F**k Tusk” (“J***ć Tusk”)
“Tusk Little Hiter” (“Tusk Hitlerek”)
and “F**k PO and PSL” (“C**j w PO i PSL”)
referring to Tusk’s Civic Platform (PO) party and one of its coalition partners
the “S” in Tusk’s name had been turned into a double lightning bolt symbol of the type used by the Nazi SS
Swastikas (drawn back to front) had also been added

police and prosecutors in Świdnica launched an investigation
including securing CCTV footage that reportedly showed the perpetrator carrying out the act
“We hope that the guilty will be held accountable,” Bishop Waldemar Pytel
“The atmosphere in the country is extremely tense and escalating…[But] we cannot overcome hatred with hatred
because it will escalate hostility even more.”

The bishop noted that the local Protestant community had expressed willingness to help paint over the graffiti
but said they were unable to do so because the building is a protected monument and permission from the conservator is needed
The church’s website speculated that it could have been targeted because the Protestant church in Poland is “associated with Germanness” and there has been “anti-German hysteria during recent political disputes”
The previously ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has regularly accused Tusk and PO of representing German interests and such rhetoric was particularly intense around last October’s parliamentary elections that resulted in PiS losing power and Tusk forming a new government
In his first remarks since the ruling party lost its majority at Sunday's elections, Jarosław Kaczyński has suggested that "external forces" – especially Germany and Russia – are behind the opposition parties now set to form a new government https://t.co/iHuHEMmUik

police in Świdnica announced that they had detained a 52-year-old resident of the town on suspicion of carrying out the vandalism

Rusin told broadcaster TVN that the man had confessed to carrying out the act

he noted that he regretted what he had done and wanted to repair the damage,” said the prosecutor

using the old balneotherapy building center in świdnica city as a large canvas, polish artist seikon has created a colorful mural painting that combines tradition of place with today’s vision of architecture
a branch in medical sciences that uses natural raw materials for the treatment
the old balneotherapy center in świdnica city dates back to the 1970s
completed after just a week, seikon’s mural painting digs even deeper into the history of balneotherapy
starting off from a purely empirical knowledge most often used by soothsayers
it has grown into selected and verified physical methods that support clinical medicine
the development has reached the level of creating a separate field that is precisely based on scientific ground
balneology is also known under different — and familiar — names such as medical spa treatment and physiotherapy
the entire mural has taken a week to be completed
details: colors and patterns blend tradition with contemporary architecture
work in progress: early stages of the painting

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
and many other Catholics prayed for a miracle of healing
2021 in the town of Świdnica and his unique funeral was described by Fr
The Requiem Mass was said in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Świdnica
who had been Franek's spiritual director during the months preceding his death
In an interview with Gość Niedzielny weekly
“I am completely helpless faced with the mystery of children's suffering and death
It poses so many questions to which I can only humbly reply ‘I don't know.’ When
Frank and I were preparing for his First Communion
I told him at one of the meetings that a person's life is like a journey
which are God's commandments that are supposed to help us reach our destination
And although the signs are identical for everyone
Franek's journey was special because Franek himself was special
His journey was short; it took less than eight years to complete.”
The priest drew attention to the analogies between the boy’s last months of life and the Passion of Jesus Christ
He also stressed that the boy received a lot of support from doctors and other medical personnel during the fight with his illness
relatives and dozens of people who may not even have known him before
All of them extended a helping hand and all tried to do what they could to make his cross less heavy
Franek overcame the grimace of pain on his face and replaced it with a smile
he also fell under the weight of the cross and there were moments of doubt and helplessness
Tomasz also compared Franek’s mother to Mary
who stayed with her dying son until his last breath
The priest also mentioned the testimony that the boy gave until the end
taking care of others and speaking kind words to them to make them feel better
encouraging the participants of the funeral to treat themselves to sweets
because that was what his son would have wanted
Franek’s father Paweł also spoke during the funeral and addressed the congregation and his deceased son:
“You gave us so much joy during your seven years of life
We vividly remember the moments spent with you
Your mother remembers them with tenderness
We also remember with joy the moments of our common pilgrimage to Jasna Góra
You went on foot to Our Lady before you were two years old and you reached the destination four times
The last 9 months were a hard yet beautiful time with you
During that time in the hospital we got very close and had many very deep talks
you wanted to bring something to your brothers
You wanted to buy them gifts with your money
Franek’s father addressed his other children
He stressed that it is not God but a sickness that takes away their beloved brother: “God is the God of life
Franek would walk with other pilgrims to the Jasna Góra shrine
and that is why his funeral gathered not only the boy’s family and friends
but also participants of the Pilgrimage of Świdnica Diocese to Jasna Góra
which the boy attended as many as four times
Przemysław Pojasek spoke moreover about the significance of the pilgrims’ community in the last months of the boy’s life
The pilgrims held prayer vigils and offered help to the family’s other children
He said that “while we did not manage to receive the miracle of healing
this time was a true spiritual retreat for all.”

Poland — Baron Manfred von Richthofen buzzed above the muddy World War I battlefields in his red Fokker tri-plane
downing a record 80 Allied aircraft on his way to becoming the war's top fighter ace and earning the famed "Red Baron" nom de guerre
who was shot down and killed just before his 26th birthday in 1918
has been a legend in limbo since Poland's borders moved west after World War II and swallowed the baron's hometown of Schweidnitz — today called Swidnica
The neglect has been largely due to apprehension about honoring a German
a legacy of the brutal Nazi invasion and occupation of World War II
Swidnica resident Jerzy Gaszynski is trying to change that with a new memorial to the Red Baron and reckons he might even pull in a few tourists at the same time
"I think that with a figure this well-known around the world
it's a bit of a sin that he's not even that well-known here and that there's really no effort to remember him," Gaszynski said
"Everybody here kind of said under their breath 'baron this
Gaszynsnki erected a memorial plaque he sculpted in the garden of the von Richthofen family home
a three-story villa set among oak trees and other stately mansions
bears a bust of the flying ace and the words: "In this house lived the best pilot of World War I
which lost some 6 million citizens under the Nazi occupation
The two countries continue to wrestle with efforts by some Germans to regain property lost to Poland when the borders shifted west after World War II

Prosecutors in Poland have announced that they are fast-tracking cases against people who have been caught looting during ongoing major floods that have devastated the southwest of the country
a man who was reportedly dressed as a soldier and was spreading false claims that the army was planning to detonate flood defences was today detained by the security services
Another person was arrested by police for spreading disinformation on social media about looting
Funkcjonariusze ABW zatrzymali właśnie osobę

— Donald Tusk (@donaldtusk) September 19, 2024
“Due to reported cases of looting in flood areas and repeated information posted on social media
the prosecutor’s office has taken action to prosecute the perpetrators of such crimes,” announced the district prosecutor’s office in the city of Świdnica on Thursday afternoon
It said that a motion to pursue expedited proceedings against one man – accused of stealing alcohol from a convenience store in flood-stricken Lądek-Zdrój – had already been approved
Another such motion – against a person accused of stealing household appliances and a bicycle from a flooded building in Krosnowice – was also expected to be approved today
The prosecutors added that proceedings are underway against two people in relation to the theft of alcohol from a petrol station in Kłodzko
an incident that was caught on film and widely shared on social media

Prosecutors also said that they had visited a jewellery store in Lądek-Zdrój widely reported in the media to have been looted
they said that the allegedly injured party had not filed a report of a crime
the prosecutors also noted that reports of “alleged foreign looters travelling in a red bus in flooded areas…has not been confirmed yet” but that “the case is still being investigated”
Shortly after the flooding started at the weekend, isolated reports of looting began to emerge. On Monday, the defence minister announced that military police – armed with night vision and thermal imaging devices – would assist police in preventing looting and that perpetrators would be “severely punished”
reported that ten people have so far been detained on suspicion of looting
including one who stole equipment worth 20,000 zloty (€4,700) from rescue workers while they were sleeping in a university dormitory in Wrocław
on Thursday evening Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on social media that officers of the Internal Security Agency (ABW) “have just detained a person who
was disinforming residents about an alleged plan to blow up a flood embankment”
That followed a previous announcement by Tusk in the morning that “a man dressed in a uniform has been located who visits places pretending to be a soldier and says that levees will soon be blown up”
The prime minister added that the man “is not an amateur” and was driving a car that had false number plates
He appealed to the public not to believe any rumours of the type being spread by the suspect and to report any sightings of him to the authorities

— tvn24 (@tvn24) September 19, 2024
police also announced that they have detained a person who spread false information on social media about “armed looters” walking around flooded areas without any intervention from the authorities
The individual will be charged with violating a law against hindering rescue operations
which is punishable by up to five years in prison
News of the man’s arrest was criticised by opposition politicians
who accused the authorities of using excessive measures

including the director of one of the departments of the District Governor’s Office in Kłodzko and Ryszard S.'s colleague
faced charges of abuse of power and certifying untruths in documents related to the implementation of said investment
with a view to gaining financial advantages

A Polish man who spent years hunting for the rumored “Nazi gold train” without success did make an important discovery in March 2019 that had nothing to do with the Third Reich: two dozen priceless Renaissance portraits
Piotr Koper had been hard at work renovating the walls of an old palace near from Walbrzych in southwest Poland
He found 24 wall portraits that were 500 years old hidden behind the plaster walls
“The construction entrepreneur and lover of local mysteries was carefully lowering the remains of a dome that once covered the palace ballroom when he noticed fragments of paintings under old plasterwork,” according to The First News (TFN)
The dome is a Baroque wooden structure; the treasure appeared when Koper and his team of restorers pulled away more plaster
Koper told TFN: “When we pulled away the plaster
we saw a delicate strip of painting underneath
We pulled away some more and we discovered a whole line of well-preserved paintings
We managed to uncover the paintings without damaging them
which is a great success.” The restorers were initially focused on the tricky operation to lower the historic dome
“The first well-preserved portrait made on the wall surprised everyone
we didn’t expect to find such a rarity,” says Koper
Only 24 wall portraits have been completely uncovered and identified
One side of the room has images of medieval rulers from the region of Silesia
and on the other side there are images of four Roman emperors
told the Daily Mirror: “The title Holy Roman Emperor was also used by the medieval rulers of Bohemia and Silesia
hence the presence of the ancient Roman rulers
Each of these huge paintings was made about four metres (13 feet) above the ground.”
“The oval shows the ruler and around the painting information about his main titles
In the lower part is information about the time of his reign and death
and at the top his official maxim at that time.” Because the paintings depict Ferdinand I
a Hapsburg and Holy Emperor from 1558 to 1564
it is possible to date the artwork to the 16th century
Koper’s earlier obsession with the Nazi Gold Train made headlines from 2015 to 2018
were convinced that they were on the trail of a legendary gold treasure train hidden by Nazi troops in a tunnel as the Germans fled the area between Wroclaw and Walbrzych in southwest Poland in the last months of World War II
the famous Amber Room stolen from a Russian palace
Historians and excavation experts scoffed and said there was no basis for believing such a train was hidden underground
Koper and Richter sank tens of thousands of Euros into their dig
“I don’t want to do anything foolish anymore.” Koper
told the media he was prepared to push on alone
The wall paintings found in a Baroque dome were not part of his search for the train but a restoration project he undertook for the building’s owner
“Our goal was only to save the Baroque dome
which is the only one in the world painted in the Renaissance style
