The battle was on until the last leg of the Ekstraliga and it finished with the victory of GKS Katowice
GKS Katowice started the 2022/2023 season by losing 3-4 against AZS UJ Kraków
These two teams were predicted to fight for fourth place
Czarni Sosnowiec and Górnik Łęczna being favourites to take the medals again
the remaining ten legs of the autumn round were all victorious for GKS
making them the leaders at the season’s half mark
That was parallel to the disappointments of Pogoń Szczecin that brought some strong names during the transfer window
as well as Czarni Sosnowiec taking sixth place
Defending champions TME SMS Łódź had a good defence in the beginning
however the end of autumn saw them finish in just third place
but were also the highest-scoring team in the league with 40 in 11 games
Spring confirmed the top of the table with Katowice
It was eventually brought down to the battle of two
Pogoń Szczecin and Śląsk Wrocław both earned three points against the leaders
winning against Łódź was a big step towards Katowice’s first title
Łódź lost their final game against Łęczna and thus took third place
while Czarni Sosnowiec found themselves in the lower half of the table
Below there was also a battle to avoid relegation
League were the favourites to drop back to the second-tier
Pogoń Tczew managed to get a few victories
HydroTruck Radom also started earning some points
but it was too late to save themselves from last place
The teams facing relegation were Medyk Konin and Sportis KKP Bydgoszcz
The top scorers classification was won by Dominika Kopińska with 20 goals
defending the trophy for the league’s best scorer
the leader of Pogoń Tczew and the U19 National Team scored 18 goals
One trophy is still to be given — the Polish Cup final will be held on June 10th in Radom between TME SMS Łódź and AP Orlen Gdańsk

European beaver (Castor fiber) has been strongly affected by expanding human populations for many thousands of years
says a team of genetic scientists led by Prof Michi Hofreiter from the University of York
Image credit: Klaudiusz Muchowski / CC BY-SA 3.0
Beavers have long been an important resource for human populations across the northern continents
Beavers have also been hunted for meat and for castoreum – an anal gland secretion often used in traditional medicine
Stone engravings at Lake Onega in northern Europe indicate that beavers played a role in ancient human societies from around 3,000-4,000 years ago
the Eurasian beaver had disappeared from most of its original range by the end of the 19th century
with only an estimated 1,200 beavers remaining
“Centuries of hunting, rather than changing climate conditions since the beginning of the Holocene (or recent) period, accounts for the lack of genetic diversity, as well as the geographic distribution of genetic diversity, seen in modern European beavers,” said Prof Hofreiter and his colleagues, who reported the results in an article in the journal Molecular Ecology
they discovered that the Eurasian beaver can be divided into three distinct groups
The two main ones are in western and eastern Europe
This population existed at least 6,000 years ago but went extinct during the transition to modern times
Prof Hofreiter with co-authors examined DNA from 48 ancient beaver samples
ranging in age from several hundred to around 11,000 years old
“While beaver populations have been growing rapidly since the late 19th century when conservation efforts began
genetic diversity within modern beaver populations remains considerably reduced to what was present prior to the period of human hunting and habitat reduction
the rapid loss of diversity prior to conservation efforts appears to have established a very strong pattern for the geographic distribution of genetic diversity among present-day beaver populations,” Prof Hofreiter said
“We found that overall there was more genetic diversity in the past
already in ancient times an ancient contact zone existed between the eastern and western populations of beavers in the Oder River area
This is close to a present-day contact zone in Germany and Poland,” said first author Dr Susanne Horn from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig
“The present-day contact zone was assisted by conservation management and members of the eastern and western population groups meet there today as they did in the past
This suggests that conservation management may
help to restore the pre-human impact population structure of threatened species,” Prof Hofreiter said

While most dental practices are fairly sterile, and well, pretty ugly, the Fi Clinic in Tczew, Poland is anything but. The clinic hired 1504 architekci to design new offices outfitted with everything a modern dental practice should have
They wanted to reduce stress so they incorporated curved corners that invite the patients back into the dentist’s room
The overall lobby was designed in a palette of black
including the black tiles on the lower part of the wall
you might notice that they used 32 marbled tiles in the design to represent the number of teeth found in adult mouths
The neutral “black” zone welcomes patients with a minimalist look that’s topped off with some green plants
patients enter the “white” zone aimed to give a clean and fresh feeling
Even the procedure rooms incorporate the warm wood which adds a cozier feeling in a typically scary place

Thermal transformation of the waste will make it possible to recover energy from it via high-efficiency cogeneration
in line with EU energy efficiency directives
This energy will be supplied to the district heating system and the national electricity grid
The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership whereby municipal company
and the production of heat and electricity
will be the responsibility of the private partner
the plant needs to be near existing waste facilities
hence the decision to build it on the Szadółki site
Tests show that the waste processed at the plant will have a higher energy value than that from the existing installations at Szadółki
It will thus generate heat and electricity more effectively
Cogeneration of heat and electricity should lead to energy savings of 23 %
allowing for equivalent reductions in energy production at other facilities and less fossil fuel consumption
Savings of water used in the process of around 1 m³ per hour
should be achieved thanks to use of rainwater. The incineration process will produce residue
much of which can also be used to generate energy
Less than 10 % of all waste processed at the unit will be stored in landfill
Educational and promotional activities will be undertaken within the project
The aim is to educate the 1 million residents of the area to be served by the unit about the importance of preventing waste and ensuring that any waste that is created is managed in line with applicable regulations
given the 2025 target of a 60 % recycling rate laid down in the regional waste management plan
it is assumed that within the calendar year following the completion of the project
separate collection will be in place for at least 50 % of municipal waste generated in the area
Pomorskie’s waste processing installations lack the capacity to neutralise the residual fraction of municipal solid waste
The main objective of the project is therefore to reinforce the regional waste management system in this area
The new plant will eliminate deficiencies in the system as regards thermal processing of residual waste
Diversification of energy sources thanks to subsequent energy recovery will improve security of supply and cut greenhouse gas emissions
the plant will prevent waste from going into landfill
It will eliminate the need to transport waste elsewhere for neutralisation
thus reducing noise and pollution from vehicles
Total investment for the project “Construction of a municipal waste treatment plant in Gdańsk” is EUR 144 726 484
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 62 952 745 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Environmental protection

Poland has several major rivers and hundreds of lakes forming the components of its complex of freshwater bodies
These lakes and rivers are integral parts of the country’s history and culture
Most of the rivers drain into Baltic Sea and have been used to for navigation from the ancient times
Most of the large rivers have more than one tributaries while the small rivers flow into the big rivers
Poland shares some of its longest rivers with other countries such as the Czech Republic
Some of the longest rivers in Poland are detailed below
The Vistula is Poland’s longest river at 651 miles in length
and its drainage basin covers an area of 75,068 square miles
while the remainder is split between Belarus
Vistula River begins from the South Poland with White Little Vistula and Black Little Vistula
It then flows over Polish plains passing through several cities including Krakow
Vistula River empties into Vistula Lagoon and Gdansk Bay of the Baltic Sea
The river is connected to the Quaternary period during which the cooling off of the climate took place
The river took its present shape in the last 14,000 years after the recession of the ice sheet which covered the area
The river is navigable from Baltic Sea to Bydgoszcz and can accommodate modest vessels
Vistula River has been one of Poland’s main trading arteries over the centuries
The Oder River arises in the Czech Republic and flows through Poland
where it is seen forming a border between Poland and Germany
The river is known by several names in different languages including Oder (English and German
70 miles of which are in the Czech Republic and 461 miles in Poland
and drains a total area of 45,892 square miles
Its main branch empties into Szczecin Lagoon
Large part of Oder River is navigable with the upstream canalized and permits large vessels to navigate the industrial sites around Wroclaw area
The river was recognized as the border between Poland and East Germany in 1950 after a long period of refusal
The river was an important trade route before the Slavs settled along its banks
Dams were built along its banks to protect the agricultural land
Oder is also an important source of household water for most cities including Ostrava
The Warta River lies in west-central Poland
It is a tributary of the River Oder and has an approximate length of 502 miles and a basin area of 21,054 square miles
The Warta River rises at Krowmolow and flows through Lodz Land and empties into the Oder near the border with Germany
The river runs through several cities including Warta
Warta River is an important source of water for the majority of households in these cities
with its right and left tributaries in turn being fed by several smaller rivers and streams
The river supports several economic activities in the area including farming and fishing
The River Warta is mentioned in the Polish national anthem
Rivers in Poland play a significant role in economic development throughout the country as a whole
Most communities around the banks of the river depend entirely on rivers for their livelihood
Rivers are important sources of water both for household use and irrigation
Most of the rivers in Poland are navigable
thus they facilitate transport and trade between cities and with other countries including Germany
