The American sensation has taken the sport by storm
winning multiple world titles and breaking records across every major speed skating distance
His meteoric rise shows no signs of slowing
proof of which came at the Four Continents Championships
all while setting the ice on fire with track records of 1:08.04 in the 1000m and 1:44.45 in the 1500m
He remains undefeated in the 1000m and 1500m
with just a single 'setback' (silver medal) in the 500m amidst a string of victories
His World Cup campaign has been equally commanding
What makes Stolz truly exceptional is his ability to dominate in both sprint and endurance events
As the World Cup circuit arrives in Tomaszów Mazowiecki
all eyes will be on him to see if his reign at the top continues
For Shinhama, the win was a statement of return, as much as rivalry. Having battled back from a serious lumbar vertebrae injury in 2024, he now sits third on the World Cup rankings in the 500m event and has proven that he is once again a force to be reckoned with. Now, as he lines up in Poland, the question remains: can he pull off another upset and prove that his Milwaukee victory was no fluke?

Takagi’s latest triumph came at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, where she blazed through the 1000m in 1:13.56, setting a track record and maintaining her perfect streak in the event this season. Despite feeling less than ideal in the lead-up, she proved once again why she is the reigning Olympic champion, outpacing a world-class field with trademark composure and closing speed.

becoming the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating
but she showed her resilience by roaring back to claim gold in the 500m at the Four Continents Championships and silver at the Milwaukee World Cup
she is setting her sights on a third Olympic campaign at Milano Cortina 2026
having won three career golds in Tomaszów Mazowiecki already
With time flying as quickly as she does on the ice
the next Olympic Winter Games loom around the corner
This weekend's races will be crucial in fine-tuning her form
so expect the Olympic champion to bring her signature power and determination to the track
Now she has gone from roller derbies to the Olympics
the 11-time Olympic medallist returned to the 400-metre oval for the first time in over a decade
posting competitive times at the Utah Olympic Oval
While her results don’t yet challenge the world’s best
they would have placed her among Italy’s top skaters last season
Adjusting from short track’s explosive bursts to long track’s measured strides has been a learning curve
I’m still working on it,” Fontana admitted
But her focus is clear: she is targeting the mass start
which mirrors short track’s pack-style racing and the team pursuit
an event in which Italy has never fielded a women’s team at the Olympics
This World Cup presents a key opportunity for Fontana to take another step toward history. Only two athletes, Haralds Silovs (2010) and Jorien ter Mors (2014
have ever competed in both disciplines at the Olympics
Could Fontana be the next to join that elite club
Arianna Fontana is the most decorated short track speed skater in Olympic history and Italy's most successful Winter Olympian
The 31-year-old puts it down to looking after her body over the years and her "fire" to win
And she says Milano Cortina 2026 would be "the perfect way to end my career"
Poland’s sprinting star is enjoying a breakthrough season
leading the 500m World Cup standings and proving herself as a serious contender on the international stage
Her defining moment came earlier this season when she stormed to victory in the USA
announcing herself as a force to be reckoned with
she has ridden that momentum to maintain her place at the top
she has a golden opportunity to shine on home ice and
Wójcik will be looking to convert her strong form into another podium finish
While Tomaszów Mazowiecki will be buzzing with action
a handful of big (Dutch) names will be noticeably absent from the ice
For some fans, their absence may be disappointing—but for their rivals, it’s a golden opportunity. Who will rise to the occasion?

Ruth Meltzer (left) and Tova Friedman at the Jerusalem gathering of Jewish child survivors of the Holocaust
Two weeks ago I happened to witness a small miracle
I was intrigued to learn that there was an international conference of Jews who had survived the Holocaust as young children taking place not far from my home
had been a child when his family was forced into the Czernowitz ghetto
The annual gathering, which took place from November 5-8, was sponsored by the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust and Descendants
I began chatting with the woman sitting next to me
told me that she was one of the youngest children to have survived Auschwitz
“When the Russians liberated Auschwitz I was five years old,” she said
After the liberation they returned to their hometown, Tomaszów-Mazowiecki in order to find out if any other relatives were still alive
including 9 siblings and all their children
15,000 Jews had lived in Tomaszów-Mazowiecki before the war but only 300 remained
Friedman and her parents immigrated to New York
Over the years she managed to find three of the four other girls from Tomaszów-Mazowiecki and since then they had all stayed in touch
Frieda Tenenbaum settled in Boston; Rachel (Rutka) Hyams – in Canada
A book about these last girls of Tomaszów-Mazowiecki was published in 1998
Friedman never managed to find the fifth girl
two of the four women are no longer with us,” Friedman remarked
“For years I’ve been wondering about the fifth girl,” she added
Friedman excused herself and went over to chat with other participants
I finished my lunch and began talking to several Israelis who were children during the Holocaust
I suddenly noticed Tova Friedman speaking excitedly with another woman
A cluster of people had gathered around them
I ran over and glanced at the other woman’s nametag
we thought we were the only ones left from Tomaszów-Mazowiecki!” she exclaimed
Although Meltzer said she hadn’t used Yiddish in years
she was now chatting effortlessly in her mother tongue
The two women sat for an hour sharing memories about Tomaszów-Mazowiecki
and described the tense days right after the war
when everyone was constantly checking the names of survivors posted regularly on the bulletin board
“It’s so wonderful to know that three of the five children are still with us!!” Friedman declared gleefully

MetroFocus host Rafael Pi Roman interviews author Allan Chernoff about his book The Tailors of Tomaszow
Seven decades after the Holocaust, Allan Chernoff, along with his mother Rena Margulies Chernoff, published The Tailors of Tomaszow
It is an eyewitness narrative largely recounted by Chernoff’s mother and firsthand accounts from other Tomaszow World War II survivors
Rena Margulies Chernoff is among the youngest survivors of the Holocaust and one of only four children from the Polish town of Tomaszow-Mazowiecki to survive
She lived through the destruction of Jewish Tomaszow
imprisonment in the slave labor camp of Blizyn and Auschwitz-Birkenau at the age of 11
The Tailors of Tomaszow is a communal memoir and history of Holocaust survivors published by the Texas Tech University Press
Chernoff wrote the book along with his mother over the course of several decades
to live on and I wanted people to learn so much about the details of what exactly happened before the war,” he said

Tova Friedman’s mother always told her the truth
was the only thing that could keep her daughter alive
So when Friedman’s grandparents were murdered by Nazis in 1942
in the Jewish ghetto of Tomaszów Mazowiecki
her parents did not shield their 4-year-old daughter from the terrible facts
Don't wear a hat or scarf when they are present
“You must always behave in a way that you won’t be shot,” she told her little daughter
In the Nazi-occupied Poland of Friedman's earliest memories
a little Jewish girl could be shot for no reason
and still working as a therapist in Highland Park
But she was raised in the horrors of a Holocaust in which Germans murdered 6 million Jews
with gas and with bullets and with bare hands — aided by Polish and Ukrainian volunteers all too eager to assist in the genocide of a people
Her mother's unflinching truthfulness gave her the tools she needed to survive
And only the truth can protect against similar horrors happening again
Friedman now tells her story — the story of a little girl who survived the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau
Who escaped a Death March in 1945 at age 6 by pretending to be dead herself
snuggling tight against the cold skin of a corpse
Friedman tirelessly shares her story with schools and community centers
taking her grandchildren to Auschwitz in 2020
“You are what Hitler could not kill,” she told them
at the 75th anniversary of the death camp’s liberation by Russian soldiers
And with the help of journalist Malcolm Brabant, she has finally published her story in a new memoir, “The Daughter of Auschwitz.” In her book
Friedman tells the story of a little girl who never knew any reality other than one in which Jewish girls died — and the new life she eventually built in New Jersey
Her book has not left the New York Times bestseller list
More:Photo of Holocaust survivors leads to reunion 72 years later
Friedman has also told her story on TikTok — a video social media platform most popular among the young
and which she still does not know how to use
she has become a perhaps unlikely TikTok star
Friedman's life on TikTok began with her grandson Aron Goodman
he’d asked his grandmother if he could film her saying a few words about her experience as a survivor of the Holocaust
the breath-mint company where Aron’s mother
Itaya — Friedman’s daughter — worked at the time
“Why would a candy company be interested in Holocaust survivors?” she wondered
At Itaya's house the day after Rosh Hashana
Friedman beams at her grandson with evident pride as he explains that he saw posting her video testimony to TikTok as a way to preserve cultural memory and combat the antisemitism he still sees online
not to mention a grandmother’s impulse to offer food to a houseguest — even if that guest is the third journalist to interview her in a day
She also takes an impish joy in describing the handsomeness of a certain national news anchor she’s met
She sees echoes of the hate she experienced in the invasion of Ukraine by Russia
in online political venom that seems to feed on itself
There were just 15 years between Hitler's publishing "Mein Kampf" and the building of extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Poland
don't be so fast to hate and to kill,’” Friedman says
‘People who could burn books can eventually burn people.'”
Goodman posted his grandmother's first videos about her experience in Auschwitz
He warned her not to be disappointed if only 10 or 20 people ever saw them
First it was a hundred people. Then a thousand. Now, nearly half a million people follow her TikTok account at @tovafriedman
Her videos have been viewed 50 million times
Children and teenagers and teachers send her question after question about the Holocaust
and Aron takes them to his grandmother to answer in intimate personal testimonials
And she would never remove the tattoo with the number she was assigned by her Nazi tormenters: A-27633
She now sees it as a sign of her moral victory against those who tried to take away her humanity
children wanted to know: Did she meet Anne Frank
Friedman answers each question patiently and sincerely
with the unexpected poignance of simple fact
because even though they were there at the same time
while Friedman was in the "children’s place," the Kinderlager
“People don’t just meet each other,” she says
Friedman does not stop her story at the liberation of Auschwitz by Russian soldiers
She wrote of their former neighbors in Poland who told her family
that they wished all Jews had died instead
killed by a Polish mob after surviving the camps
Friedman still finds the small moments of kindness — wherever they existed
among those who tried in their own little ways to resist or to remind each other of shared humanity
She describes the kernel of dignity that her mother helped her keep
even as Nazis attempted to convince every Jewish person that they were not people
And she tells of the life she was able to forge in the United States after the concentration camps
or during her brief time in Israel — after meeting a little boy named Maier Friedman who bought her a cheese sandwich when she’d just arrived in New York
“You're going to marry somebody you've just met?”
Recently she was also able to reunite with two other survivors in New Jersey
shown next to her as children in a famous photograph taken by a Russian soldier at the liberation of Auschwitz
to hold Zoom videos to help refugees as a therapist during the pandemic
and gratitude for sharing both the trauma she has experienced and the life she has led
Her grandson shields her from the antisemitic comments that still arrive on TikTok
Hitler,’ or ‘Hitler was right.’ ‘Should have killed more.’ ‘Didn't happen,’" he says
Because I shield her from the negativity.”
But most of the messages are from people whose hearts she has touched with her words and her videos
She asked her rabbi: Why would people be interested in me
when there have been 15,000 books about the Holocaust
‘It’s because you represent the children that aren’t here,'” she says
Can you imagine: one million and a half Jewish children killed
starved and beaten and drowned and torn apart
Those lives that would be musicians and doctors
and here I am just one little person that survived.”
that it's because her mother shows it is possible to have a good life after atrocity
she receives messages from people who have experienced hardships all over the world — people in Hong Kong or Mexico or India who have endured abuse
“It is so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time
how her story inspires others to make changes in their life
and to see hope where they didn’t see it.”
Clarification: Nazi Germany established ghettos and death camps in occupied Polish territories; they were not established in areas under Polish control

Correction & clarification: A prior cutline misspelled the name of Aron Goodman
Tova Friedman was just 5 years old when she was taken with her family to the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau
She was 6 when she was taken to Crematorium III.
More than 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives at Auschwitz. But Tova survived to tell the story
she's using TikTok to teach young people about the horrors of the Holocaust
In her new book, Friedman writes that she was born Tola Grossman in Gdynia
A year after that the family would be forced into the Nazi-created Tomaszow Mazowiecki ghetto in occupied Poland. Out of the 13,000 Jews in Tomaszow Mazowiecki
only 200 were alive at the end of the war and only five were children.
Editorial Board member Carli Pierson spoke with Friedman about her book, "The Daughter Of Auschwitz: My Story Of Resilience, Survival And Hope," written with the help of veteran war correspondent Malcolm Brabant
Their conversation has been edited for length and clarity

How did this initiative with your grandson start? He was talking to his classmates
And I don't know why he started talking about the Holocaust
(but) that they knew very little about it
we talk about it freely if the topic comes up.
So he thought to himself he's going to educate them
can you do this for about two minutes? I said
hundreds of people and then thousands of people
So he's been doing it now maybe six months
And he's got a lot of questions that he answers
Mostly (from) very young people, high school kids
which is interesting – calls from Australia
And it's very been very gratifying that he
Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff: Rosh Hashanah is about a simple question. What kind of world do we want to live in?
It's hard to tell because everything blends. At the age of 2 and 3
and I think her brother and other people. They put the Jews into a space where they can keep watch
You know? There were rules: You can't go out, can't come in
People who were free to move were people who had work permits
Those who didn't work were at a disadvantage
And its purpose was to find us easily: To starve us because they control how much food we get, and then kill us
I remember being under the table a lot because there was just no space
But we lived as a family. You could move in inside the ghetto
but you couldn't get out of the ghetto.
U.S. surgeon general: Our kids' mental health is as critical as their grades. Here's how to prioritize both.
I want to explain something to you. It wasn't horrific to me – I grew up with corpses everywhere
I grew up with people being shot right in front of me
I grew up with children being torn to pieces
I always trusted her (my mom); I felt safe
And when we went to the hospital and she found a corpse – it wasn't scary to me
The corpse, it was a nice-looking corpse. Now I would say she was 18-20 (years old)
And to hide with somebody who can't hurt you – she was my protector
You gotta look at a corpse different from the way you're looking now
The smell of the burning of the bodies was everywhere
That's how I thought the air was supposed to smell
"What is that smell?" I said to my mother. She said to me that's the burning of the bodies after they gas them. I was 5 1/2
But after that I didn't ask anymore – I knew it
that's the terrible thing. She was about 12
They would (point and) say two more weeks left, three
You could see the starvation of the body
MindUp for Life: Goldie Hawn urges 'don't turn a blind eye' to our children's anxiety and depression
What I worried (about) was that if they called her number and she doesn't say
they will call and call and we'd have to stand up. So I memorized her number
I knew the sound of it because I heard it so much. I was so proud, I remember
She's right here" – where the other dead children of the night were lying. I pulled her out of the bunk bed
And I still remember how heavy it was for me to drag her by her feet to the front of the room so that she wasn't missing, that they know that she didn't run away and they don't have to look for her
We have both – that's how we were created
We have the good and the bad in us. And if you have a little girl
is to use the kind side even when she doesn't feel kind
How have you sustained your faith after everything you've lived through? I have a lot of trouble with God
He told me that he was supposed to go to the gas chamber with his father upon arrival to Auschwitz
That's exactly how it was supposed to be done
but as he was walking with his father
the commandant got a letter that he opened and he started yelling at somebody to get the group back
And I was so hard trying to find out what day was it. I spoke to this man. I said let's sit down and talk about it
Maybe that's what happened to me. Because we waited and waited and waited; we froze to death
They gave us some kind of a rag. You know but it wasn't anything. Somebody thinks maybe it was near to a time when the Allies were coming
That's why they wanted to get rid of all of us very quickly
Maybe they were told from Berlin to stop gassing
I remember they were walking with clipboards
They'll take us next time. They'll now get the right bunch of kids
If you could tell that little girl who was hiding under the table in the ghetto
or who was watching kids dying in her barrack in Auschwitz
what would you tell her? Interesting question
She is one of the youngest survivors of Auschwitz and uses her vivid memories to write and speak against antisemitism and prejudice.

Link Copied!0DebateWhen Jake Paul is around
what went down at the European Speed Skating Championships last month had fans doing a double take
better known for knockouts and internet chaos
Dutch speed skating star Jutta Leerdam had just secured her third European title
Paul was losing his mind in the best way possible
you’d think he was the one training for this moment his whole life
But while he had every reason to celebrate
it looks like Leerdam might not be giving him too soon chances to go full hype-man mode
she recently made a massive career decision
just two days before the event kicks off on February 21
Why on earth would she skip a major competition like this
Leerdam is focusing on extra training for the World Speed Skating Championships in mid-March in Hamar
And she’s not the only one making this move
A bunch of Dutch speed skating stars including Femke Kok
and Beau Snellink are also sitting this one out
Their spots for the World Championships (March 13-16) are already locked in
because of their performances at the National Championships
So rather than spending energy on another race
The 2022 Beijing Olympics silver medalist crushed the competition
She reclaimed her Dutch national champion title in the 1000-meter race
And she was the only skater to break the 1:14 mark
and this makes six straight national titles for her
she celebrated the win on Instagram with a casual flex: “National Champion 1000 meters 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥.” Of course
What’s your perspective on:"Jake Paul as a hype-man—Is this the new side of him we all needed to see?"
