Italy holds a special place in my heart
which is why I'm always finding excuses to return
I've visited three times since 2016, including a four-month stay in Florence during college. Thanks to Italy's well-connected transit systems
I've had the chance to visit 21 cities and villages
Some of the destinations I've been to have blown me away
Here are four Italian cities I'd happily return to — and two I'd leave off my itinerary next time
Since living in Florence in 2016
which is the capital of the Tuscany region
I recommend staying a minimum of four full days to explore the city's museums and local markets
I love visiting the farmers market in Santo Spirito for fresh-baked goodies
I've also enjoyed grabbing gelato and trekking up to Piazzale Michelangelo to watch the sunset
Mark's Church is a great place to watch affordable live Opera
I suggest horseback riding through the Tuscan hills
I immediately fell in love with how enchanting
and walkable Verona felt during my first visit in 2016
Home to Shakespeare's beloved "Romeo and Juliet," visitors commonly visit Juliet's house
calling down to those below from the balcony
a volunteer group that calls themselves the secretaries of Juliet
They receive thousands of letters addressed to Juliet from around the world
and volunteers sort letters by language before handwriting a response
I got to spend a few hours reading and writing replies myself
which became the highlight of my trip to Verona
and quaint feel make it perfect for a day trip for time-restricted itineraries
If Sicily is on your itinerary
The volcanic stone is also used to build local churches
Sicily's food and wine scene is also reason enough to visit this part of Italy
providing nutrients for vineyards that produce incredible wine
Cinque Terre is a string of five seaside villages on the northwestern coast of Italy
Although all five villages are accessible by train
I'd recommend starting in the southernmost town
Cinque Terre is perfect for anyone looking to relax in a vibrant environment
or explore five seaside villages in one day
staying on opposite sides of the city each time
Although the Neapolitan pizza did not disappoint
The local metro system was convenient for getting around
but it turned out to be a persistent target for pickpockets
After witnessing a few such instances firsthand
I made the choice to avoid taking the trains at night
that meant my taxi fares added up quickly after evenings spent out
Overall, if I'm going to be in Southern Italy I'd much rather pop over to the Amalfi Coast or other nearby destinations
from the unique architecture to the outstanding glasswork
Although the architecture is stunning, the narrow, winding streets also made it difficult to navigate the city and added to the feeling of overcrowding.
Additional planning is now needed to visit, as the city requires tourism permits on certain days. Considering the expense, challenges with walkability, and additional planning required, I likely won't return to Venice for another visit.

It is 4 a.m. and I am being led through the sleepy foothills of Berri, a small town in the Italian region of Piedmont
These chilly nights are part of a delicate ecosystem in Piedmont and are
what makes both winemaking and white-truffle hunting so spectacular in this region

The wildly expensive fabrics have appeared in some of the most celebrated rooms in history
including the White House and the Fabergé Museum in St
At first I was dismissive of the hand-operated looms
thinking it unnecessary to employ such a laborious technique when the work could easily be made by a machine
Back in the showroom I'm shown machine-woven fabrics
But then I am presented with the same pattern
There is an unparalleled dimensionality and depth to the handwoven fabric
The experience quietly throws everything into question for me
Modernity has undeniably improved our lives in countless ways
Even as Italy tries to keep pace with the modern world
there are people protecting the country's cultural history
many of the artisans I've met are younger

Perhaps the most gratifying takeaway I leave Italy with is an understanding of how important it is to celebrate and preserve locality throughout the world

This year will mark the beginning of the construction of the world’s longest suspension bridge
It will be an unparalleled challenge that the Italian state is determined to undertake at all costs
The bridge that will connect the island of Sicily to mainland Italy will span the Strait of Messina over a distance of 3,300 meters
the construction must face the intense tectonic activity in this area
Italy's leadership is determined to fulfill this dream of connecting Sicily to Europe at any cost
And it will be an extremely expensive dream
The cabinet of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has revived the concept
with Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini being the driving force behind the project of the bridge over the Strait of Messina
The bridge's design will spare no expense - it will be a structure for both trains and vehicles to travel over the 3.2 kilometers between the towns of Torre Faro in Sicily and Villa San Giovanni on the mainland
Recent estimates project a cost of approximately 13.5 billion euros
A small portion of this sum will be funded by the European Union
Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti stated that the necessary funds will be phased over several years
with the first three installments paid by 2026
According to data from the government in Rome, just the construction phase could contribute 2.9 billion euros to the national GDP, create employment for 100,000 people and involve 300 suppliers, with the majority of these workers coming from the Sicily and Calabria regions, where unemployment rates are high, according to CNN
the bridge over the Strait of Messina in southern Italy will become the world's longest suspension bridge
the Strait of Messina Bridge would be as long as the two longest suspension bridges in China combined - Yangsigang Yangtze and Nansha
Top longest suspension bridges in the world:
The bridge in southern Italy would stand at a height of around 74 meters above sea level and would allow for a navigation channel of 600 meters
enabling the passage of cargo vessels and even the tallest cruise ships
it is designed to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5
The biggest challenge for the Strait of Messina Bridge is its location
Sicily and the surrounding region of Italy are prone to seismic activities that could disrupt the construction process and the final structure
a professor of structural engineering at Princeton University
told Newsweek that the design of a suspension bridge can overcome any tectonic issues
as this type of bridge is the most flexible
"Note that these bridges are quite flexible and can accommodate ground movement and
tower displacements better than many buildings," Nordenson said
The engineer drew comparisons to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan
which is also located in an active geological area
"The Japanese Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a kind of cousin to Messina
The great Hanshin earthquake of January 17
1995 (with a magnitude of 7.3 and the epicenter 20 km west of Kobe) moved the towers
the only structures that had been erected at that time
"The Strait of Messina Bridge is a huge technological challenge
3 kilometers of bridge will be suspended over the strait (...)
It is also Italy's challenge to the rest of the world," he said
The project has sparked controversy in Italy
but the Italian government remains committed to starting the work by the end of this year
builder Webuild announced that work would commence by the end of 2025
"I hope to be there and succeed in crossing it together with the entire team by the end of 2032," said Webuild CEO Pietro Salini
Nordenson believes it is difficult to anticipate a definitive date for the start or completion of the work
He likened this project to the MOSE barrier
designed to protect Venice from floods: "It's quite difficult to predict the completion date
The MOSE barrier in Venice was also a priority of the Berlusconi government and took several decades."
"In addition to the quality of engineering and design
the cost is tied to the work schedule and the level of transparency or corruption that may occur
It requires a rare combination of design excellence
and respect for craftsmanship and the work involved," the expert detailed
Sam and Paul Mincarelli were on vacation in Penne
when they learned that their favorite local restaurant had closed down after a century in business
“We jokingly talked about us reopening it,” Sam said
their love letter to Italian food on Harford Road
where they’ll serve up similar fare with a Maryland twist
the idea of cooking Italian food in Italy “feels a bit like culinary mansplaining,” Paul joked
But he’s confident they’ll win over Penne’s diners with some help from Sam’s recipe for crab cakes
The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.
“Go ahead and roll your eyes at those who want to emigrate amid Trump’s second term,” the story said
While the Mincarellis’ plans have been in the works since before the most recent election
they initially considered keeping Cafe Campli open and renting out their home in Hampden even after leaving the U.S
when they decided to embark on a whole new chapter
“We wish the life raft was a little bigger,” said Paul
The couple first visited the town years ago
falling in love with the area’s cuisine over meals at Tatobbe
Both eventually ditched earlier careers — Paul worked as a civilian for the Baltimore Police Department
and Sam was an architect — to open a restaurant in their hometown in 2022
Cafe Campli’s menu includes references to Abruzzese cuisine
which includes a mix of hearty meats like lamb and rabbit as well as seafood and
But its Penne’s pace of life that the Mincarellis found equally compelling
Restaurants and shops might close for no reason
a refreshing change of pace from the grind in Baltimore
“Restaurateurship in America can be infuriating,” Paul said
between the arms race of vibes and all that stuff.” Italians have different priorities
retains a specific and old-world charm that’s hard to pin down
a friend of the Mincarellis who also owns a home there
She hesitates to post photos online for fear of contributing to the town’s “Disneyfication.” She pointed to a famous sandwich shop in Florence which draws lines for blocks and blocks
“There are many other fabulous places in Florence to eat,” she said
Penne is the kind of place where people know their butcher and baker by name
said friend and restaurateur Francis Cretarola
an Abbruzzo-inspired restaurant in Philadelphia
He gets why the Mincarellis want to move there — he and his wife also hope to eventually relocate there permanently — and is impressed by their courage
their plan to take over a beloved old restaurant in the town’s center is “not without a considerable amount of risk.” While Cafe Campli is an homage to the region’s cuisine in Baltimore
the Mincarellis will be tasked with serving that same food to people who know those dishes “in their bones.” He compared it to someone coming from Germany to the Inner Harbor and trying to make a crab cake
That task may be even harder in an insular community like Penne
and it can take them a little while to trust you,” Marchetti said
Paul says he and Sam are up for the challenge
The prevailing attitude about food in Penne is to center ingredients
The blue crab invasion was initially talked about in Italy “as though the shores have been overrun by roaches,” he said
with fishermen fretting over the threat to their clamming industry
Only after a while did Italian cooks and diners start to warm up to the possibility of actually eating blue crabs as well
the road to success in Penne may be paved with Old Bay

The last day began with four teams still alive with the two leading teams – Great Britain and Ukraine – in control of their own destiny
Both needed just a point to advance but only one of them got it
Italy and Poland needed to win and get help
The issue of relegation had already been settled on Thursday
leaving Japan and Romania to play their final games with no pressure against opponents that faced plenty
Great Britain and Italy earned promotion to the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland while Ukraine had to settle for bronze and will stay in Division I Group A
the Japanese could neither be promoted nor relegated and played their last game free of stress
who seemed to squeeze their sticks all game long
Japan outshot Ukraine 15-9 in the opening period
Ukraine scored the game’s opening goal on a blind pass in front of his own net by Yuto Osawa that Viktor Zahkarov took advantage of
but otherwise Japan was the stronger team over the first two periods
Teruto Nakajima tied the score by putting in his own rebound after Alexander Levshin stopped his initial shot but neither the goalie nor his teammates could find the loose puck
Late in the first period and early in the second
four straight Japanese penalties gave Ukraine two separate stretches with a 5-on-3 advantage but was unable to regain the lead
Then goals 53 seconds apart around the game’s midpoint by Taiga Irikura and Fuji Suzuki gave Japan a 3-1 lead
we stuck to our game and we were able to finish on some of our scoring chances
and that’s why we won,” said Japan’s Yushiroh Hirano
Olexi Vorona converted a centring pass from Zakharov with 10:20 remaining to bring Ukraine within a goal
and then the Ukrainians pushed hard for the equalizer but were unable to get it
despite some great looks in the last two minutes with Levshin on the bench for an extra attacker
Unable to get the required point to secure advancement
Ukraine’s hopes now rested on either Romania taking one point from Italy or Poland winning in regulation time against Great Britain
Asked if he was going to watch the two remaining games
I’ll just wait for the results tonight
Romania could have helped Ukraine by taking at least a point in this game
but the tournament host ran into an Italian team on a mission
Ukraine’s loss in the opener opened the door to qualifying with a regulation win and they took full advantage of that opportunity
scoring three times in each of the first two periods en route to a 7-1 win
Daniel Ross Tedesco had two goals and one assist for Italy while Nicholas Saracino had three assists
Radim Valchar scored Romania’s lone goal with 5:21 left in the first period
Manuel Mantenuto restored Italy’s two-goal lead just 52 seconds later and the Italians never looked back
“It wasn’t a perfect tournament by any means but we reached our goal,” said Italian defenceman Jason Seed
Speaking about the favourable result in the first game of the day
we knew before our game that we needed that outcome for us to move up
there’s nothing we could do about that and we were getting ready to do a good job and win our game either way
but the rest was on us and we did our job.”
“We didn’t look ourselves this whole tournament and I don’t know what it was,” said Romania coach Dave MacQueen
“I don’t know if it was the pressure of playing at home
or if some of our guys were tired from playing in the (Erste Liga) finals and they didn’t have any rest coming into this.”
they came out to all three games every day
It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t put on a better show for them.”
Italy had claimed one of the advancement spots and the Brits had the inside track on the second spot
Italy’s win had eliminated Poland but the Poles could help out their Ukrainian neighbours by beating GB or at least taking the game to overtime
As the minutes wound down and the game well in control
the British faithful known as the “Barmy Army” knew that promotion and first place were both well in hand and chanted continuously
threw their gloves and sticks in the air and joined them
The 31-year-old father went missing on Monday
He went hiking in the mountains near Lake Como by himself and never returned
and this wasn’t his first visit to the area
The local authorities launched a massive search frot he man on Tuesday
with over 100 rescue workers and volunteers combing the area while drones and helicopters searched from above
They searched “endless hectares of forest,” dived into lakes
and even climbed to over 1,800 meters above sea level to see if the Dutch tourist was trapped somewhere
“They have done much more than was possible
“Our thoughts now go out mainly to his family,” the mayor said after calling off the search
It may be picked up again if new clues emerge
The Catholic Church’s cardinals are meeting next week at the Vatican to elect the new pope in a centuries-old process called conclave
but the longest-ever in history was nearly three years long

An image of the cardinals who voted in the longest conclave in the Catholic Church’s history
Italy (AP) — It was the mounting rage of citizens in Viterbo
that put an end to the longest papal election in the history of the Catholic Church
forging for the first time the word “conclave.”
Viterbo is also considered the birthplace of modern conclaves
where cardinals are confined to a single place until they elect a new pontiff
and often need to negotiate before reaching a compromise on the final name
the cardinals — summoned in Viterbo to elect the successor of the late Pope Clement IV — were split mainly between two factions and couldn’t reach a consensus before September 1271
As the cardinals continued to deliberate in Viterbo
frustration rose among locals due to the lack of progress
as political and internal struggles had cast a shadow over the election
Those divisions stemmed from the cardinals’ allegiance to competing parties
mainly supporters of the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire
That was further complicated by personal and family ties
making any agreement on the pope’s election extremely difficult
The electing marathon led citizens ,who at the time had to pay for the cardinals’ room and board expenses
“The cardinals left us a very important testimony
where they said to be locked inside a palazzo discoperto
a palace with no roof,” said Elena Cangiano
an archaeologist at Viterbo’s medieval Palazzo dei Papi (Palace of the Popes)
the cardinals ended up camping inside the unroofed palace
“That’s reportedly testified by some holes found on the hall’s floor
which could be those left by the tents’ poles,” she explained
Then Viterbese also restricted the cardinals’ meals to bread and water to make them hurry up
they started tearing off part of the roof of the large room that hosted the college of cardinals
Those extreme conditions only lasted three weeks
following which the cardinals were allowed access to the other rooms of the palace
It would take another 15 months before Gregory X was chosen as the new pope
That was the longest papal election ever: To avoid the same situation ever occurring again
Gregory X promulgated a new apostolic constitution — called “Ubi Periculum” — that imposed strict regulations on the election and allowed to isolate the cardinals
Gregory’s election was also seen as a “compromise,” with his name chosen to unite the divided college of cardinals and bring an end to the exhausting process
Gregorio X decreed that cardinals were restricted to “one meal per day,” and later
considers the city’s primacy a matter of pride
”This is the history of our city,” he said
we care a lot about our medieval neighborhood
we care about the pope palace that is truly wonderful and
was struck by the history of the Viterbo conclave after a tour of the papal palace
I did not know that first conclave started here
Vatican history experts stress that modern conclaves still owe to Viterbo some of their key characteristics
“Let’s say that the timing is now almost certainly respected
also thanks to all that happened in Viterbo,” said Cangiano
it doesn’t take that long to elect the pope.”

Bet Bethlehem is really happy Hungary twisted his arm to get him out of NC State at the semester
He just placed 34th in the 10,000 World Cup race in Ibiza
I bet he would have had more fun at NCAA and come out of it with more motivation than he got from 34th in Ibiza
It was very cold in Ibiza and affected many people with adverse results than the public come to expect
Maybe his time in NC state was not as productive for him as he had hoped also 🤷
The grass is not always greener on the next hill
Pretty sure the after party in Ibiza would be motivation enough to keep pushing so he can get back again next year 😉
I will start by saying Openwater racing is a “long distance” discipline to me
it adds a whole new level of tactics and strategies
I suspect this event may tempt a few of the pool distance swimmers to cross-over and sink their teeth into the Openwater environment
which can only be great for the Openwater popularity and exposure
Not sure who come up with the 3km concept but well done World Aquatics for implementing the innovation

UK tech entrepreneur and his daughter were among seven killed when the Bayesian sank in a violent storm
A 55-metre (180ft) barge carrying a heavy-lift crane has begun work to raise the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian from the seabed off Sicily, where it sank last summer killing seven people including the UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch

the 56-metre yacht was anchored just off Porticello when the vessel was struck by a violent storm shortly before dawn and sank

Experts expect the salvage operation to be fiendishly complex
“The mobilisation of this specialist salvage consortium and key lifting assets follows a detailed assessment of the best technical methodology to safely recover Bayesian,” said Marcus Cave
a director of the British-based consultancy TMC Marine
which will oversee a consortium of expert salvage specialists undertaking the project
“Every marine salvage operation requires unique planning considerations
environmental protection and recovery of Bayesian intact
have been pivotal to the planning and decision-making process.”

the Hebo Lift 10 – one of Europe’s largest floating cranes – which is not yet involved in the operations
will use its 83-metre boom to hoist the yacht from the seabed
these dedicated lifting assets will be supported by specialist anti-pollution experts and assets that have been monitoring Bayesian since her sinking,” TMC Marine said in a statement
“They will help to continue to ensure that protection of the marine life and environment is maintained throughout the recovery of the Bayesian.”

Now with a potential 20% tariff looming on the horizon
Italian wine producers are naturally nervous about the impact on their businesses
“Italy exports around $2 billion worth of wine each year to the U.S.
which makes up around one-third of our total wine export volume,” stated Adolfo Rebughini
along with two other Italian wine executives
“We are concerned that the tariffs could raise wine prices for the U.S
especially due to the complexity of the 3-tier wine sales system,” he continued
It’s a market we can’t replace easily in the short-term.”
And it turns out that Italian wine sales can be quite lucrative for American wine buyers
because Rebughini shared that every euro spent on producing a bottle of wine in Italy generates a margin of €4.5 euros for importers
the three Italian wine executives described some of the programs and methods they are using to maintain positive relationships with U.S
They are hopeful that these strategies will help to lessen the impact of the potential tariffs
Given that wine is so important to Italy they were one of the first countries to establish a large annual trade show, now called VinItaly
where wine buyers from around the world are invited to taste and learn more about Italian wines as well as to negotiate sales deals
“The first wine trade fair actually started in the city of Verona in 1896, and our organization – Veronafiere
“The mission of VinItaly is to promote and foster the global wine business for Italian wines.”
Bricolo reported that for the most recent VinItaly
2025 (right after Donald Trump’s tariff announcement on April 2)
that 97,000 people from 130 countries attended
“Because the tariffs were announced a few days before the trade show
or 3200 American buyers,” reported Rebughini
“There was concern because the tariffs for Italy were 20% (now on pause for 90 days)
but there was a lot of vibrant energy and good conversations
wine has survived many centuries and we will figure it out.”
The main VinItaly trade show has been so successful that last year Veronafiere decided to launch VinItaly-USA
The trade show was held in Chicago in October of 2024 and attracted 1500 American wine buyers
“At both VinItaly trade shows we provide matchmaking tools so Italian wineries and wine buyers can discuss
and Italian wine master classes,” Rebughini said
Veronafiere works very closely with the Italian Trade Agency (ICE.org)
“We couldn’t be successful at VinItaly without the support of ICE
because they are the ones who help us identify and invite buyers to the trade show,” added Rebughini
The VinItaly Trade Show in Verona Attracted Over 97,000 Attendees in April 2025
it may not be surprising that Italy’s Prime Minister
was one of the first government officials to reach out to the Trump administration to discuss the tariffs
“Our Prime Minister has a good relationship with Trump
Another method to enhance Italian wine relationships is the VinItaly Ambassador program
“We have now trained over 1500 people to be Italian wine ambassadors at our VinItaly International Academy,” explained Stevie Kim
The purpose of the program is to education wine professional
on the intricacies and joys of Italian wine
This allows them to better explain the benefits of Italian wine to consumers
“The academy has been running for 10 years now
and we offer the training and certification exam at VinItaly in Verona
“We are very proud of all of our Italian wine ambassadors.”
She explained that in addition to the in-person training sessions where the ambassador candidates taste and evaluate Italian wine
there is also a 40 hour online program that provides the history and theory aspects of Italian wine
President Trump Meets With Visiting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni At The White House
Though the Italian wine executives want to maintain their position as the #1 wine import country to the U.S.
they also recognize the need to explore other markets for Italian wine
“Rightfully the Italian wineries are looking into other markets
they don’t want to give up on the U.S.,” said Rebughini
He mentioned that they are looking at India and have held several small events there
In addition they are also expanding tasting events in South America and Asia
“The mission is to promote Italian wine abroad
but Italian wineries want to keep on investing and increasing their presence in America
We haven’t heard anyone say that they want to get out of the U.S
Senate on Tuesday confirmed Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta
to serve as the ambassador to Italy and San Marino
Fertitta is the CEO of Landry’s — which includes restaurants
casinos and hotels — and the owner of the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association
He also starred in the television show “Billion Dollar Buyer.”
Fertitta said he was focused on increasing trade between the United States and Italy
He said he wants to "close the gap" in the United States' trade deficit with Italy, partially through the Italian government working with American energy companies. The deficit, where the United States imports more goods from Italy than the country exports to Italy, was more than $43 billion in 2024 according to the U.S
Italy is “receptive” to doing more business with the United States
“They're very excited about having an American
come over there and work with them,” Fertitta said about his conversations with Italian officials
he told the State Department he will resign from various positions
including his roles with Landry’s and on the University of Houston System Board of Regents
He will remain in his ownership position with the Houston Rockets
and will not participate in any situation that could interfere with the NBA or the team while serving as ambassador
While introducing Fertitta during his Senate confirmation hearing, Sen. John Cornyn praised Fertitta as “one of the nation’s most prominent businessmen,” and as a voice in the Houston area – naming his donations to the University of Houston, his positions on various boards, and his work with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on reopening businesses after COVID-19 shutdowns
“Tilman's realization of the American dream will serve him well as the voice for our nation's interests and as an advocate for a strong relationship between the United States and Italy,” Cornyn said
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fertitta was outspoken about how his business empire was struggling due to restrictions in the United States and overseas. He was a member of Abbott’s task force to “reopen” Texas after lockdowns
which drew criticisms for being made up of business executives
Fertitta also participated in a roundtable with Trump and other restaurateurs in May 2020 focused on what the industry needed to reopen following COVID-19 shutdowns
Fertitta publicly supported Trump’s presidency in 2017
when he shared his optimism for the new president’s economic policies
He is a prolific political donor
Fertitta held a Houston fundraiser for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign
Italy’s conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has closely aligned herself with Trump
The pair met at the White House earlier this month where Trump called Meloni a “friend,” and said she has “taken Europe by storm.”

Italy’s regional councilors for agricultural policies have taken a unified stand against the national government’s recent ban on industrial hemp flowers
calling the measure an “ideological” overreach that threatens an emerging sector and undermines regional autonomy in agricultural development
who oversee agriculture policy implementation in each of Italy’s regions
are aligned under the influential Italian Confederation of Agriculture (Cia)
a key stakeholder in the country’s food and farming policies
Their coordinated response marks the most forceful political challenge yet to the ban introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government as part of a sweeping “Security Decree” issued in April
“With a regulation that can undoubtedly be defined as ideological
an entire supply chain in full development and an economic and employment-related sector are being erased,” said Massimo Pica
He warned that the ban not only affects farmers
but also downstream industries such as construction
and textiles that depend on hemp as a raw material
The government decree – Article 18 of the broader Security Bill – classifies hemp flowers and cannabinoids such as CBD
in defiance of existing EU regulations that permit the free circulation of industrial hemp with THC levels below 0.3%
Critics say the decree fails to distinguish industrial hemp from marijuana
conflating non-psychoactive crops with controlled substances and undermining a sector that has contributed to job creation and rural economic revitalization since hemp was re-legalized in 2016
“The government’s action disregards scientific evidence and fails to recognize the proven safety and economic potential of industrial hemp,” Pica said
Industry leaders warn that without legal differentiation between hemp and cannabis
Italy risks falling behind its European neighbors in developing bio-based materials
The backlash from Cia and regional officials follows a recent court decision further narrowing the space for Italy’s hemp economy
the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR) rejected an appeal challenging a ban on oral CBD products
thereby reinforcing the government’s classification of all cannabis-derived oral supplements
Citing the “precautionary principle,” the court said the state was justified in restricting CBD to prescription-only use due to health concerns such as liver toxicity and psychiatric risks
The ruling overturned earlier suspensions of the ban
despite counter-evidence from La Sapienza University and the European Commission’s Cosing database
which classifies CBD as non-psychoactive and non-addictive
The decision stunned legal experts and advocates
who had hoped the court would favor market openness and scientific transparency
The Security Decree and CBD ban were both enacted without full parliamentary debate
prompting constitutional questions and concerns over abuse of executive power
the government can issue a decree law in cases of “urgency and necessity,” but it must be ratified by Parliament within 60 days
Legal experts representing hemp trade association Federcanapa called the decree “constitutionally and legally doubtful,” arguing it violates both domestic law and European Union rules on free trade and agricultural policy
Trade groups estimate the combined regulatory moves could jeopardize more than 3,000 businesses and 30,000 jobs in a sector valued at nearly €2 billion
a coalition of advocacy groups—including Canapa Sativa Italia
and Imprenditori Canapa Italia—has launched a legal and public campaign to challenge the bans at national and EU levels
who abide by the rules every day and ensure a transparent and safe market
should not fear the state but receive its support,” said Mattia Cusani of Canapa Sativa Italia during testimony before the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee in March
the European Commission has requested clarification from the Italian government
Industry advocates hope the EU will ultimately intervene to prevent Italy from setting a precedent that could restrict legal hemp markets across the bloc

the Guitar Show has established itself as Italy’s most important acoustic and electric guitars trade fair
it now aims to achieve this status throughout Europe
Pavilions 31, 32, and 33 at the BolognaFiere exhibition center in Bologna will host various presentations, masterclasses, and live shows. On the three stages of Guitar Shows 2025, new products will be presented on May 10 and 11, 2025. Masterclasses on topics such as playing technique and music theory will be held
and live performances by professional musicians will be shown
the Guitar Show has grown rapidly every year
Last year’s edition welcomed over 7,500 visitors over the two days of the fair
The move to Bologna this year is primarily for logistical reasons
Bologna’s central location in Italy makes the Guitar Show 2025 easier to reach from all corners of the country
both for manufacturers and distributors as well as for the public
Bologna’s international airport is also only 15 minutes away from the exhibition center
Well over 200 manufacturers will be presenting their latest gear at Guitar Show 2025
and Zoom will show their products in the three pavillons
The organizers have also devised a solution to one of the biggest problems at many music fairs: the volume level
where electrically amplified guitars and basses may be played
Artist presentations may also only be given through headphones
and mainly acoustic instruments will be played here
Admission for one day costs 14 euros, while both days cost 24 euros: Tickets
This does not include the masterclasses mentioned above
Tickets for these can be purchased along with admission tickets on the Guitar Show 2025 website

Italy's Treasury said it planned to buy back five BTP bonds expiring next year in a transaction to be held on Wednesday, using the cash surplus it holds at the Bank of Italy.

Tyra Grant, who until this week was one of the most promising young players in American women’s tennis
is the daughter of an American father and an Italian mother
She was born in Rome and raised in Vigevano
before training at the Piatti Academy in Bordighera

She relocated to Florida in 2023 and has since spent significant time training in the U.S.
including at the USTA National Campus in Orlando
Grant was not immediately available for comment through her representatives at IMG
Tennis Association (USTA) spokesperson confirmed that Grant had informed the organization that she would represent Italy
while a spokesperson for Italy’s tennis federation
said Grant and officials had been in talks and that a formal announcement could happen soon
for which Grant has received a singles wild card
A spokesperson for the WTA confirmed that the organization had approved Grant’s request to change her nationality and that the change was scheduled to go into effect for the Italian Open
All a player needs to change her nationality for tennis is a valid passport or other proof of nationality
Players who request a change after the start of the season are not allowed to request another change until the next season
Grant has a career-high singles ranking of No. 356 and has won three junior Grand Slam doubles titles. She last year won the Wimbledon girls’ doubles title with another American rising talent, Iva Jovic
and reached the semifinals of the girls’ singles at the 2024 French Open
Grant received a singles qualifying wild card to the 2025 Madrid Open
which is still owned by IMG as a deal for its sale to a consortium led by Endeavour chief executive Ari Emanuel approaches
Perhaps more notable is the wild card to the Italian Open
Grant’s was the only given to a non-Italian athlete
Grant played with an American flag next to her name
where Grant is playing in the pre-qualifying tournament for doubles ahead of the Italian Open
It is not uncommon for American athletes with dual citizenship to choose to represent countries other than the U.S.
where there is less competition for sponsorship dollars and potentially being the best in that country is worth more than being one of many elite players
in the top 50 and three players in the top 100

Welcome to “Cookbook of the Week.” This is a series where I highlight cookbooks that are unique
While finding a particular recipe online serves a quick purpose
flipping through a truly excellent cookbook has a magic all its own.
this latest volume from Milk Street has done something unexpected—it’s made Italian food new for me again.
This absolutely packed cookbook by Christopher Kimball and J.M
and it’s fresh in more ways than that
that you’re about to see a different side of the country's cuisine
and relatively reliable to duplicate across regions
What this cookbook does differently is give you a host of dishes you probably aren’t familiar with (I wasn’t)
and truly helpful tips at every turn.
As for the dishes you thought you knew well
Milk Street Backroads Italy shows you a new way to make it
A new way that doesn’t make you grumpy about the change
intrigued by the possibility of an alternative favorite
It’s important to mention that these “new” methods aren’t actually new—they’ve been in use for generations
But they’re finally making their way to us from different regions in Italy—from Italian chefs that Kimball and Hirsch cooked with and learned from—occasionally with an adjustment in favor of science
or a spin on technique for the sake of ease in the American kitchen.
I usually find an excess of stories in cookbooks a little tiresome—I like to get on with the recipes—but the stories in this cookbook drew my attention nearly every time
Instead of meandering anecdotes (which is when I usually flip)
these excerpts are descriptive with a clear intention
They provide vital information about what you’re about to see on the next page
and why it’s going to be different from what you’re used to.
I especially enjoyed reading about No-Fry Neapolitan Eggplant Parmesan (Parmigiana di Melanzane)
and the Milanese technique for quick-cooking risotto
Each dish traditionally has an annoying but supposedly written in stone
the eggplant must be breaded in a coating of egg and bread crumbs
it’s consistent stirring and boosting it with lots of cheese and butter
much of the same slow and consistent stirring while slowly ladling in chicken broth
Well Milk Street Backroads Italy showed me that not only can you ditch the annoying steps
but the meal might actually be better for it.
While Italian food is often known for hearty
the authors here relish in unearthing the little-known recipes of Italy—and the enthusiasm is contagious.
I love the idea of making a soup that’s jam-packed with herbs instead of meat
swapping spaghetti with chickpeas for my vongole
or giving tomatoes a break and dousing rigatoni with a bright green broccoli sauce
Don’t get me wrong: There are familiar pasta dishes
Just be open to the twists and turns on these backroads
I browsed the offerings in this cookbook for days
and I stopped often to gander at a gorgeous picture here or peruse the ingredient list there
Something about the creamy green sauce with big pasta tubes and even bigger broccoli florets was irresistible
Plus the ingredient list was a reasonable length of 10 ingredients
the sauce is made from the often-jettisoned broccoli stem with some key flavoring ingredients added
They all get blended into a furiously jade-hued sauce and tossed with the cooked rigatoni and blanched broccoli florets
made even less busy by using a single pot of boiling water for all of the work
I appreciated not having multiple pots and pans going at once (and not having to clean them all later)
When I caught a whiff of the sauce out of the blender
I knew: There would be no hope for leftovers
The broccoli flavor is to be expected—it’s the star—but the sauce is actually built on layers of flavor
and lemon zest specifically—get blended in at the perfect ratio to lift each other up without overwhelming the eater
My neighborhood is about to run out of broccoli
Extra imaginary points from me if you solicit your local real-life bookstore too

Ambassador to Italy and San Marino vows to give up more than 600 businesses and restaurants to step into his new role
The U.S. Senate confirmed Houston’s billionaire restaurateur Tilman Fertitta
Ambassador to Italy and San Marino on Tuesday
“I take the responsibility of being an ambassador at this crucial moment in history as the most important job of my life,” Fertitta told the Senate during his speech
Despite the long list of companies that Fertitta will divest or resign from, it appears he’ll remain an owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets
the Office of Government Ethics has determined it is not a conflict of interest
John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced Fertitta to Congress during a hearing held on Tuesday
praising his business acumen and reputation as one of the most successful restaurateurs in the country
“What I later learned is that Tilman is not only one of the nation’s most prominent businessmen
he’s also a visionary and a philanthropist who’s dedicated much of his time and resources to bettering the community
I’ve witnessed Tilman make an incredible impact on the city of Houston and the entire state of Texas,” Cornyn said
Mark Kelly (D-Arizona) also showed his support for Fertitta during the early April hearing
Kelly talked about Fertitta’s support and encouragement when his wife
was shot in the head in 2011 while meeting with constituents in Tucson
“When I think of the worst moment of our lives and the impossible days and weeks and months that followed
Tilman is one of those people that got us through it and that I significantly relied on,” he says
Although Fertitta has extensive experience as a business owner and in running restaurants
it is uncertain how much experience he has in foreign service
The Galveston native has some Italian connections — his family is of Sicilian descent
“We’ve been blessed to visit Italy numerous times over the years
and I’ve long been an admirer of the country’s culture
and true patriotic spirit,” he said during the March hearing
Fertitta has shown his support for Trump in the past, donating $420,000 to PACs backing the President and hosting numerous fundraisers for the president-elect. During a roundtable discussion at the White House at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic
aspects of Trump and Fertitta’s relationship came to light
Several Italian municipalities have been offering abandoned homes for just €1 in a bid to revitalise their shrinking villages as young Italians move towards the cities
The aim is to attract new residents and prevent further decline of rural communities
particularly in regions like Sicily and Abruzzo
These homes are typically uninhabitable and require extensive repairs
The home owners have transferred them to local councils
who later resell them for a symbolic €1 to avoid demolition and stimulate redevelopment and repopulation of these dying villages
There are certain government incentives that can help
Italy’s “Superbonus” tax programme offers up to 110 per cent coverage of qualified renovation costs
though availability may vary depending on the region and the type of works being undertaken

and architectural character of the destinations
the train’s broader mission revolves around immersive travel
offering more than scenery by connecting travelers to the nuances of place through each route

but as a frame through which to experience Italy
Dimore Studio’s interiors provide an intimate
richly-detailed context for this new form of slow
but moments of stillness and design clarity along the way
