PROVIDENCE — It was a dark and dreary Saturday
The rain was only a drizzle as the first of four groups gathered to start an H.P
Lovecraft walking tour from the John Brown House on Power Street
The late Providence author Howard Phillips Lovecraft is best known for his weird horror fiction — and the noon tour was part of the final events for the annual Flickers' Vortex Sci-Fi
a volunteer tour guide for the Rhode Island Historical Society
has been leading various historical society tours for 10 years
She became a fan of Lovecraft after she started conducting walking tours focused on the author
She said people come from all over the world to view the places Lovecraft wrote about
adding that she's even led people on Lovecraft tours in sleet
The drizzle almost immediately turned to a downpour as the group stepped onto the uneven College Hill sidewalks
a Navy man from California who is stationed in Newport
He had a crocheted cthulhu — a Lovecraft's fictional character in his popular short story "The Call of Cthulhu" — in his Hawaiian shirt breast pocket
"He made psychological horror what it is now," Zarow said from under an umbrella
a slow build that relies on the audience to scare themselves."
explained that Lovecraft used a "vague concept of dread" to let readers experience horror by filling in the blanks with their own personal fears
He paused when the tour arrived at its first stop — the former location of Lovecraft's final home
and now where Brown University's David Winton Bell Gallery sits
Lovecraft's home was moved to a lot on Prospect Street after his death
Maitoza had the tour group look at the courthouse and downtown buildings down the hill before reading the writer's 1935 description of them in "The Haunter of the Dark."
the lofty pinnacles of the downtown section
spire-crowned mound in the distance whose unknown streets and labyrinthine gables so potently provoked his fancy," she read
"From his few local acquaintances he learned that the far-off slope was a vast Italian quarter
though most of the houses were remnants of older Yankee and Irish days."
where thousands of Lovecraft's manuscripts are housed
is a memorial with one of Lovecraft's early poems written on it
"Could it be raining any harder?" Maitoza said before moving the tour-goers
Lovecraft's own drawing of his last home — the one that used to be where the gallery is — was shown when the group arrived at its current location: 65 Prospect St
The writer died from cancer in 1937 at age 46
left his umbrella in his car and the rain was relentless now
"I will brave the rain for Lovecraft," he stated

1/30Mercy wins MHSAA Division 1 volleyball finals 2023.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Eric Ingles | eingles@mlive.comBATTLE CREEK -- On one play in the fourth set of Saturday’s Division 1 volleyball state championship game at Kellogg Arena
Farmington Hills Mercy had two players run into each other
one take a knee to the head as she went to the ground
the libero diving over the carnage to get a ball up in the air
but senior outside hitter Angie Butler went chasing after it
crashing into the media table but getting the ball up and over the net
And Butler made that play with a torn meniscus in her right knee
“At the beginning of the season when I first did it
I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to play through it,” she said
“But I tested it out and go to PT all the time.”
Just as Clarkston Everest Collegiate had done in the Division 4 final hours before on Saturday
Mercy found itself trailing by two sets but coming back to win
“We just kept fighting,” Marlins setter Campbell Flynn said
so we just stayed together and did our jobs.”
Jillian Collins had 24 digs and Butler added 22
“We had to worry about [Flynn] and then she started finding other people to go to,” Northern coach Valerie Lurye said
“They’ve got some firepower [Kalczynski] on the outside
They showed up and just had a bit more firepower.”
The Huskies got 41 assists from Lexie Stotenbur
Forest Hills Northern raced out to a 15-5 lead in the first set
Mercy got a kill from Butler to try to respond
then slamming down a third to make it 22-13
But a pair of aces from Madalin Hersman got the Huskies to the brink of a title
and a Marlins hit into the net ended the set
but the Huskies responded with a kill from Hersman followed by a kill and an ace from Hopewell to jump out to a 10-3 lead
getting a kill from Butler before Kalczynski snuck in one of her own
Mercy took a 15-14 lead after a block from Campbell Flynn and an overpass knocked down by Cree Hollier
and a pair of kills from Kalczynski helped build the lead to 20-17
a tipped kill from Hopewell followed by an ace from Hersman getting Northern within a point
and a block by Zimmerman later knotting the score at 22-22
Erickson then scored the final three points of the set for Northern
rolling a pair of kills off the tape before tipping one over Mercy’s front line for the set
“The first two sets they didn’t have a lot of energy and couldn’t really serve or pass
but really turned it up the fourth set,” Erickson said
falling behind 5-1 but immediately responding with a pair of kills from Kalczynski
A kill from Kalczynski and a tip by Zarow got the Marlins within one
and a Forest Hills Northern hitting error knotted the score at 17-17
For the next few points Kalczynski and Erickson dueled
Kalczynski winning a 50/50 ball to put Mercy in front before Erickson responded with a kill to tie it once again
Then the younger players on each side took over
with back-to-back kills from Northern freshman Riley Loehfelm before Mercy sophomore Cree Hollier won a 50/50 ball
Mercy took the first four points of the fourth set
The Marlins led 9-4 off a kill from Kalczynski
but the Huskies rallied as Erickson tooled a block and picked up two more kills and Lexie Stotenbur added an ace
and Northern led 13-11 before Mercy rallied to tie it
Hollier again coming up with key points down the stretch to end it
In the fifth set a Hersman ace helped the Huskies jump out to an early lead
but a series of kills from Kalczynski put the Marlins back on top 10-7
She also had a pair of kills to get Mercy on the verge of the state title
A hitting error from Northern with a ball down the line going wide ended it
