A Polish utility and power generator will partner up to finance and build two major district heating power projects in that nation
The management board of PGE Energia Ciepla and the Wroclaw Combined Heat and Power Plant Group Kogeneracja signed three agreements with the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW)
The deal co-finances construction of combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Siechnice and Zgierz
Both projects are designed to move away from coal fuel in the heat generation process at PGE locations
The construction of the new Czechnica CHP plant in Siechnice will replace an existing coal-fired CHP facility by 2024
Czechnia CHP’s unit will be gas and steam combined
with a peak load boiler house and a heat accumulator
CHP units deliver both electricity and heating for home use or industrial processes
President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna
pointed out that the PGE Group will transition its power and heat generation fleet to 70 percent lower emitting fuels by 2030
“One of the priorities of the strategy of the PGE Group is the decarbonization of the heat sector,” Dabrowski said in a statement
The co-financing agreements “will enable us to achieve the strategic objects of the PGE Group.”

Nowy Sącz has the European Union’s worst air, according to new data released by the European Environmental Agency (EEA)
A further four Polish cities are among the ten most polluted in the ranking of 323 places across the bloc
Poland has long battled with some of the continent’s most polluted air
which is estimated to cause around 50,000 premature deaths in the country annually
was found by the EEA to have an annual mean concentration of 27.3 μg/m3 of PM2.5 (referring to small and particularly harmful airborne particulate matter) in 2019 and 2020
The World Health Organisation recommends a limit of 10 μg/m3
— Compassion 🇪🇺 (@gmulder) June 17, 2021
That made Nowy Sącz one of only five EU cities to receive the worst rating of “very poor” air
Another was Zgierz (25.2μg/m3) in central Poland
Also in the bottom ten were Piotrków Trybunalski, Żory (both 24.9 μg/m3) and Kraków (24.7 μg/m3)
as well as the major cities of Łódź (18.2 μg/m3)
Wrocław (16.2 μg/m3) and Poznań (17.2 μg/m3) were also classified as having “poor” air
The non-Polish cities in the bottom ten were Cremona
Umeå in Sweden had the EU’s cleanest air
followed by Tampere in Finland and Funchal in Portugal
Poland has EU’s worst air pollution, shows new report
“Fine particulate matter is the air pollutant with the highest impact on health in terms of premature death and disease,” notes the EEA
“Long term exposure…caus[es] serious health effects.”
A study last year found that children in one Polish city had over four times the level of harmful substances from air pollution in their bodies as their counterparts in France
Over the last decade, there has been a growing campaign in Poland
for the authorities – as well as the public themselves – to take steps to mitigate air pollution
Dangerous levels of air pollution in Polish children’s bodies, finds study
The biggest contributor to the problem is home heating, with many Poles burning coal – and sometimes, illegally, household waste – in domestic stoves. In 2019, Kraków became the first city in the country to ban the burning of wood and coal
The city also launched an app that allows residents to not only monitor air quality but also to send the authorities geotagged photographs of buildings where they suspect illegal burning
Some municipalities in Poland have used drones to monitor smoke coming from chimneys
Pioneering anti-smog measures improve air in one of Poland’s most polluted cities

A single-line railway track from Łowicz to Łódź in central Poland is reducing commuter times and connecting new businesses
we’ve been able to cut commuter times and are connecting new businesses
For the residents of the central Polish region of Łódzkie
the lack of reliable train service has been an ongoing obstacle
From commuting to the next town to travelling across the country
bus or bike – or a combination of all three
As part of an initiative to create a better-connected transport system
the region has started developing a single-track railway line that runs between Łowicz and Zgierz
This project focused on track number three
a 47 km stretch of track that leaves from Stryków station
12 sets of turnouts (used to guide trains from one track to another) were replaced
trains can now travel at a speed of 90 km/h
this means the trip from Łowicz to the Łódź Kaliska station has been cut in half – from over two hours to one hour
This is great news for the many people who commute between one of the 11 towns served by the route: Łowicz
with the creation of the Łódź Agglomeration Railway
will have a substantial impact on the region’s economic development
With the addition of the soon-to-be-complete line 15
which will connect with line three at Zgierz and offer service to Bednary
the region expects to see a boost not only in passenger traffic
the rail will be extremely beneficial to the many industrial sites being established along the still-to-be-built A1 highway.
the north-south A1 will connect much of central Poland
running from Gdańsk through Łódź and its Upper Silesian industry area to the Czech border
at which point it connects to Czech motorway D1
The 565.1 km route is part of the European E75 route
Total investment for the project “Modernization of the railway line No
