Praga / Ząbkowska Street The coolest street of the artistic Praga district, located east of the Vistula River, is Ząbkowska Street, where you’ll find a raft of alternative bars and cafés such as W Oparach Absurdu (meaning “in the fumes of absurdity”) and Łysy Pingwin (“bald penguin”)
part of the street was home to a famous vodka factory Koneser and the area is currently being redeveloped into a trendy retail/office/residential complex
Another highlight of Praga is the Soho Factory complex, where you’ll find a mix of post industrial buildings and new developments housing everything from creative retail and office spaces to Warsaw’s coolest museum, the Neon Museum, and one of the city’s best Polish restaurants, Warszawa Wschodnia
In recent years the Vistula River Bank has become the heart of Warsaw’s summer nightlife, attracting crowds of young party goers. Most popular clubs include Temat Rzeka, Pomost 511 and Cud nad Wisłą. During the day it’s a perfect spot for cycling, skateboarding and simply relaxing on the grass by the water
The adjacent district of Powiśle on the left side of the river is also worth exploring
Part of the Old Jewish Quarter
centred around the grand Renaissance All Saints Church
the triangular Plac Grzybowski (the Grzybowski Square) has recently experienced a lot of redevelopment and become one of the coolest areas in the very centre of Warsaw
It now features a number of new cool cafés such as Kosmos and Charlotte Menora (a sister café to the famous Charlotte on Savior Square) and great dining options on the nearby Próżna Street which is made up of beautifully restored tenement houses

Canon Banaszkiewicz at grave of Bl Jerzy Popieluszko
Yesterday was the feastday of Bl Jerzy Popieluszko
the young Polish priest and chaplain to workers in the Solidarity trade union
who was killed by communist government agents on 19 October 1984
spoke about his life in an interview with Lukasz Krzysztofka,Przewodnik Katolicki nr 42 19 October 2014
When and where did you meet Father Jerzy for the very first time ?I met him in 1978
He was appointed vicar and moved into the same parish of the Infant Jesus in Warsaw as me
He was my neighbour and became my friend; we were almost like brothers for six years until the end of his life. What sort of impression did he make on you ?He was of small stature
having been in the priesthood for six years
His first parish had been Zabki near Warsaw
the second our Lady Queen of Poland in Anin
From there he came to Zoliborz where we worked together for a year
We ate at one table and said Mass at one altar
I was amazed and surprised by his attitude
I think the statement that he put on his First Mass picture: "God is sending me to spread the Gospel and heal the wounds of hearts in pain," this was his life's mission which he fulfilled from the beginning of his priesthood
He lived with the consciousness that he had been sent by God to spread the Gospel
His presence at Zoliborz during the first four years was solely to spread the Gospel and heal the wounds of hearts in pain.At the end of 1980 Father Popieluszko moved to the parish of St Stanislaw Kostka where the parish priest was Father Teofil Bogucki. When Father Jerzy left the parish of the Infant Jesus the Archdiocese named him the priest for the Health Service
He moved into an attic next to St Ann's Church
There was a tiny window in the roof through which you could look onto the roofs of the Marienstadt
Father Jerzy's room was accessed by a little metal ladder
I had been the vicar at the parishes of St Stanislaw Kostka and of the Baby Jesus during the time that Father Bogucki had been dean for Zoliborz
I proposed to the prelate that he invite Father Jerzy to the presbytery
Father Bogucki spread out his hands as a gesture of greeting and said: "Father
here are your living quarters and the lower Church is where Father can welcome the Health Service and students." Father Bogucki gave Father Jerzy a warm welcome
It was surely God's grace that allowed him to become Father Jerzy's spiritual father. On 31st of August Father Jerzy prepared Mass for the workers of the Warsaw "Huta"
How was he welcomed there ?It was extraordinary
in August 1980 there were strikes on the coast
in the Warsaw 'Huta' which had a workforce of ten thousand there was a sit-down strike
The workers were gathered together locked inside their place of work
They sent a delegation to the Primate that they were looking for a priest to say Sunday Mass for them
came to us to request that one of our priest could go to them and say Mass
None of the priests could go and then Father Jerzy said that maybe he would be able to
He took with him a suitcase containing the liturgical receptacles and went
He was allowed entry to the 'Huta' and was greeted by applause
He turned around to see if there was someone important behind him
Later he commented that the applause was for the Church which after 40 years had come to say Mass amongst the factory workers
and then he distributed Communion. In February 1982 Fr Popieluszko begun celebrating monthly Masses at St Stanislaw Kostka Church for the intention of the Motherland
Who came to these Masses and what did Father Jerzy say during them? The initiator of these Masses was Fr Bogucki
The late Fr Syryjczyk used to celebrate them
He used to prepare for them very carefully throughout the whole month
Each Mass for the Motherland had its own particular intention ( for the youth
Fr Jerzy chose appropriate liturgical readings
Everything was according to the Church's social teaching
The Church was so full that some had to stand outside or even in the park nearby
Father Jerzy used to print out the homily before the Mass and hand it to his congregation so that they could take copies back to their communities
the teachings of the Primate of the Millenium
my sermons were not directed against anybody
lies and injustice and in defence of human dignity
He simply stated the truth that people were thirsting for."In spite of all the difficulties that the authorities created
the Masses for the Motherland were always full
for they wanted to be authentic children of God.How did Father Jerzy gain authority amongst the workers ?Firstly
These were the foundations of his personality
He was a priest who authentically firmly believed
who wanted to share his heart and everything with every person without exception - believer or nonbeliever
he was a brother to every person. In this midst of this accumulation of responsibilities and serving others did Fr Popieluszko have time for prayer ?I was Fr Jerzy's confessor
When he asked me to be I was surprised as I was his friend and neighbour
We would walk around the Church and he make his confession
That is why he would not part from his rosary or breviary
everywhere where possible he organised places to celebrate Holy Mass
During his last reflection on the 19th October 1984 in Bydgoszcz he said: "Mary
we people of work and the oasis of the home Church
We want to be with your Son during the hours of His agony
our problems and to go the way of Christ on Calvary"
This confirms his devotion to the Mother of God
On the 12th anniversary of his ordination he went to Jasna Gora
with a petition for the gifts of the Holy Spirit".Did Father Jerzy expect that he might be murdered? From the time that he started celebrating the Masses for the Motherland
A month before his death when there was a massive surveillance of Fr Jerzy
the factory workers wanted to protect him but he said: "Through death and a funeral one can achieve more than when while living." He also said: "Resurrection is through the Cross
there is no other way."From where did Father Popieluszko draw the strength to defend human dignity?Faith
his inner life and his calling were the components which gave him the strength to serve others
from these came his power and strength. On the 14th June 1987 the grave of Fr Jerzy and the church of St Stanislaw Kostka were visited by Pope John Paul II.Fr Jerzy never met John Paul II personally
The Pope supported him with his heart and prayer
On the 14th June 1987 the Pope after a long prayer came out of the church without any speeches
he went through the stone rosary which surrounds the tomb
He knelt a long time keeping the palms of his hands resting on Fr Jerzy's grave
I think that this was a great meeting of two saints
do you feel the presence and protection of Fr Jerzy?Yes
God is giving me health and strength to bear witness to Fr Jerzy.Father
which sentence from his homilies is the most important to you?Especially important I think is the last sentence from his reflections in Bydgoszcz: Let us pray that we may be free from fear
intimidation but most of all from the lust for revenge and violence. What would Blessed Father Popieluszko be talking about today at the Masses for Poland?Today Poland and the World need Father Popieluszko
He would be saying the same as what he was saying 30 years ago
If people took his homilies into their hands and thought about them they would see that everything has a relevance to the present day
Today the social and political situation is more complicated and difficult than then but his teaching still remains relevant. In how many places and where are the relics of the blessed priest of Solidarity? In the whole world there are about one and a half thousand of his relics
More and more pilgrims are coming to the grave of Blessed Fr Jerzy
People are receiving many graces and physical and spiritual miracles with his intercession
It is difficult to foresee when we can expect a canonization but our prayer is definitely required for this intention

Following the singer's death in 2016, cultural organisation Stacja Muranów crowdfunded for the creation of this fab mural of Bowie
depicted in his iconic Ziggy Stardust persona
It was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of the legendary brief visit Bowie made to the city that helped inspire the track 'Warszawa' on the album Low
during a train journey made with Iggy Pop between Berlin and Moscow
David Bowie got out at Warsaw to stretch his legs
where he popped into a record shop and heard a recording by the Śląsk Polish National Song and Dance Ensemble
He bought the LP and returned with it to Berlin
where he was busy working on his latest album
When it came to needing lyrics for a particular melody
he was inspired by the folk song 'Helokanie'
although the words that Bowie actually sings on 'Warszawa' are not Polish but a language of his own invention

we celebrate the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous
established by the European Parliament in 2012 on the initiative of the Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide Committee (GARIWO)
we talked with Anna Stupnicka-Bando – the President of the Polish Association of the Righteous Among the Nations – who is a member of the Gardens of the Righteous Committee
Anna Stupnicka-Bando and her mother were honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Institute on 19 September 1984
they hid Liliana Alter – a daughter of a Bund activist
a boy Ryszard Grynberg and Mikołaj Borenstein
served as a medical orderly in the Sub-district II of Żoliborz of the Home Army (AK)
How important is it in today’s word to award people for their resistance against genocide
helping the victims of war and ethnic cleanses
These are the attitudes noticed and noted by the Garden of the Righteous Committee…
Today is a very important day because we cannot forget about people who do something for others
stand up to regimes and any activities aimed at the destruction of the good
This day should be celebrated all around the world
for everyone to remember that the good must prevail
we need to uphold the faith in the good at all cost
People who survived the war knew what it meant to sacrifice for someone
Today’s Righteous sacrifice in the name of an idea
you saved three Polish Jews during the occupation
Did your mom – as far as you remember – hesitate
before taking Liliana Alter out from the Warsaw Ghetto
She was a very brave woman all of her life
even her family – sisters and brothers – who opposed when mother would take me to the Warsaw Ghetto to bring a loaf of bread and some beetroot jam in my school briefcase
Mom did not pay attention to what they said and believed that a piece of bread may
then at least somewhat extend a life in the horrible conditions of the ghetto
She set her eyes on a very poor family with seven children
Did your mother know the family before the war
Or maybe she got to know them in the ghetto
where she used to go with registration books
and his wife was placed somewhere near Warsaw
He had documents that allowed him to join the partisans
the People’s Army (AL) – he had a cousin in the woods
He was a member of Bund and thought that he might be needed in the ghetto
My mother didn’t know Alter or Grynberg family before the war
but we also had a Jewish lady visit us every day
Miss Janina – who didn’t have Semitic features either – taught me a little bit of German
She visited us everyday at 25 Mickiewicza Street in Żoliborz to warm up her supper
She received food from the Central Welfare Council and brought it to our house
She lived at Słowackiego or Marymoncka Street
You are involved in veteran affairs in the “Wawer” circle
you meet with young people – what do they think about the difficult
young people are used to watching gruesome scenes in the movies
But I have to say that it is Jewish youth who is most interested in my stories
One group can be as big as four hundred people
Boys twice my size hug me with tears running down their cheeks
They respond much more emotionally than our youth
And I have to say that it really irritates me when people who do not know war at all and have not lived through it
say what should and should not have been done
They have no idea about the choices people faced
you never knew if you are going to return in the evening
This taught me that you can never be sure of anything in life
we have to live in the moment and do our part
Warsaw is a city of lost souls who disappeared somewhere between superficial development and selfless malice. My experience throwing local parties Brutaż and Światło in comfortable and gloomy spaces has taught me that the most interesting parts of Warsaw’s art scene are silent
like the weird guy looking at you while you’re not watching or that bored girl standing in the corner
I broke the ice and started to approach strangers
I became friends with people whose art doesn’t really fit the Western-optimized view of what “nightlife” and “underground” should stand for
The following is a list of those who pushed me to get involved in what I’m doing now and whose art doesn’t translate to the realm of art business nor the idea of the “underground,” but nevertheless holds great potential to affect moods and minds
These people created without hope for wide acceptance in the first place
His spiritual attitude led him to explore the concept of timbre and to develop a deeper understanding of techno’s environment
and he started making and listening to music as an inner dialogue because he didn’t really have anyone to talk to about it
Although he enjoys quite a following outside of Poland
Warsaw’s scene hasn’t really treated him well
he’s gotten back on a DJ track—not that anybody was asking—and performs under a darker alias called K Magic

He compares his sonic output to Sun City Girls
so he’s technically a founder of the series
It’s a rollercoaster ride through and a reflection of her process of getting rid of the shame of one’s own cultural roots—a Polish specialty
her work is probably the easiest starting point for reading on Warsavian and Polish identity
Her forthcoming projects include a book on David Sylvian’s and the band Japan’s fixation with the Far East and Maoism
She’s also working on an essay on the Eastern Bloc concept of freedom
which covers the Pierestroika movement and the war in Yugoslavia
This space doesn’t really have a proper sound system, parts of it smell pretty bad and you have to hold the toilet door while you pee (or whatever)—but it’s still the best venue in Warsaw
Located in the basement of Warsaw’s Academy Of Fine Arts
It’s a meeting point for disillusioned students
and it’s where the first Brutaż parties were held
The result is a small cheerful/depressed community
Their most recent projects include telling the story of Google founder Sergey Brin and his obsession with human genome
hosting a TED-inspired session of 15-minute long stage pieces compiled from works by total debutants and renowned directors like Grzegorz Jarzyna and Paweł Łysak
This concert venue was created as a safe harbor for Warsaw’s avant-jazz and free improvisation crowd right after the LadoABC label went on temporary hiatus and the avant-garde club Powiększenie closed
it became a really popular concert venue and attracted a totally new audience and many great musicians; Thurston Moore
Peter Brötzmann and Michael Gira have all played multi-day stints at Pardon with a great success
It’s truly a pillar of Warsaw’s scene and one of the few clubs where no one will judge you for having a cup of green tea in the middle of the night

The implementation of an attached building is always an interesting architectural challenge
When the first building is designed in a frontage development – the challenge is the foundation for a good start
Within the framework of the current development plan
we designed one building that paid homage to the historical buildings of old Żoliborz
Our inspiration was the district’s buildings from the early modernism period of the 1930s
It refers to the existing blueprints of the place; that includes aspects such as, scale
while at the same time it fits in with the landscape of both the preserved and new buildings being erected in the area
while giving the possibility of free arrangement
The architectural form of a residential building is created at the junction point of pragmatism and a subjective idea of aesthetics
The visual concept of embedding the block in the landscape combines and struggles with pragmatic technical-legal
The selection criteria differ fundamentally between the developer
the most important factor is the economic effect measured by the profit achieved and commercialization
The user evaluates the character of the building through convenience and cost of usage
leaving aesthetic impressions in the background
The residents of the area are generally the ones that evaluate the appearance
Facades create the aesthetic environment in which people reside
Quality of space is a part of quality of life
The use of better quality materials in construction that retain their level of quality for many years
have redefined the rules of large-format stores
and consequently the assumptions made in their planning and design
The covidial restrictions have forced investors and architects to deviate from previously functioning patterns. The first basic modification is moving away from typical shopping malls to retail parks
The blockage of malls that have shared interior passageways has at one time raised the attractiveness of centers with units accessible directly from parking lots
is an example of an evolutionary step back from solutions to ones that are less convenient for the customer
Buyers forced to use retail-parks saw another aspect of the change – lower prices resulting from lower construction costs and lower rental prices
This stopped investments while transforming typical malls into facilities that are even more multifunctional and much more user-friendly
The second noticeable trend is the adaptation of hypermarkets built almost three decades ago
We are currently working on adapting such facilities in Lubin and Grudziądz to meet current standards and needs
We can say that we are resurrecting them to function again
joining the trend of recycling on a large scale
Our studio performs quite a large number of projects in the transformation of buildings or complexes of historic or post-industrial buildings to standards that meet modern needs
Examples include realizations of Tobaco Park and Żnin Sugar Factory
One of them is the high variability of investment assumptions
encountering unknown elements in outdated materials used on the site
that were previously impossible to reveal provoke verification of design and technical assumptions
they are a canvass for more interesting interior design
showing details of the object’s hitherto unknown history
at times needing re-evaluation of solutions such as structural or installation
This lengthens the execution and design time
experienced investors take into account these peculiarities
the element of scale is added to the described considerations
Penetrating the materials of successive buildings in historic complexes results in the emergence of new adaptation possibilities
Then we change not only technical and aesthetic solutions
we can build a restaurant on the site of a playground
The timing of implementation and the peculiarities of our time with its dynamics and the need to respond to constantly arising challenges and constraints also play a big role here
All of this makes each adaptation project an unforgettable creative experience
the satisfaction of saving someone else’s story and recording your own

The Community Center for Mental Health (CCMH) for children and adolescents
opened today by the Children Memorial Health Institute (CMHI)
is another of 11 such facilities launched thanks to European Funds
said Deputy Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak
Assistance at the Center is obtained not only by the child
The Center does not operate solely in the facility; teams of community therapists provide assistance at places of residence
This is a completely new approach to psychiatric care in Poland
which is moving from an institutional and hospital-based form to a community-based form
close to the environment of the person in need of help
I am glad that CMHI is joining the reform of child and adolescent psychiatry
Deputy Minister Jarosińska-Jedynak stressed
we signed a funding agreement for this project worth nearly PLN 15 million
The activities for the residents undertaken by CMHI
in addition to children and young people from Wawer
will also be provided to young residents of Bemowo and Żoliborz
The deputy head of the MDFRP also mentioned other measures to support health care that are subsidized by European Funds
We have just launched another call for proposals for grants for the Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities
In addition to the 138 entities that have already received financial support
we want another 140 PHCs from across Poland to receive funding to improve architectural
The maximum value of the grant is PLN 720 thousand
