Health News
As a case manager at ECU Health Medical Center
Sara Beard-Linton described her role – and the role of all case managers – as the mortar that helps piece bricks together
insurance providers and more to help come up with a care plan
She’s also taking on an important role to help case managers across North Carolina and the country to bring best practices to the work she and her colleagues do each day
Recently, Beard-Linton was named president-elect for the North Carolina Chapter of the American Case Management Association (ACMA) and will take over as president in 2026
She said she’s excited for the opportunity and has appreciated learning from other board members in the state and nationally. She’s especially appreciative to represent ECU Health
share what she believes is working well for the system and hear from others about opportunities for growth
“It’s nice to put us on the roadmap of making changes and being a part of that change for case management as a whole,” Beard-Linton said
“It’s really important to put any egos aside and not saying ‘We’re doing this better.’ It’s all about what we can all do better together to advocate for patients and their families.”
Beard-Linton said she’s seen tremendous growth in the North Carolina chapter as its membership rose from about 200 to more than 1,000 today
The chapter includes representation from 64 organizations and even includes retired case managers taking the opportunity to give back to their profession
Beard-Linton is one of three ECU Health team members on the North Carolina ACMA board
executive director of Care and Utilization Management at ECU Health Medical Center
system manager of Care Management at ECU Health Medical Center
Hargrove has been a board member for North Carolina’s ACMA for five years
She said that seeing ECU Health on a national stage and in a position to influence positive change has been an exciting step for the department
“I’m so proud of our case management team and being able to represent ECU Health on the board
really getting ECU Health out there over the last couple of years,” Hargrove said
“I’m very proud of the work the team has done and now being able to help lead the North Carolina chapter of ACMA.”
Beard-Linton said one of her favorite parts of participating in the board is the opportunity to be a voice for the patients and families the health system serves
She shared that her background as a social worker made her a passionate advocate for people and she’s grateful to take a larger role in that work with North Carolina’s ACMA as president
“We have a committee that looks at government policies on a state and federal level and actually goes to Washington
to meet with Senators and members of Congress to talk about things that are impacting our patients
this is a great opportunity to give back and encourage others to give back and advocate for changes for the communities we serve.”
She said she would encourage other team members to get involved in similar groups related to their field
take opportunities to learn from others and be a leader even if they’re not serving in a leadership role with the system
During the ACMA National Conference in April
system manager for Case Management at ECU Health Medical Center
and Hargrove had the opportunity to present some of their recent work to attendees in Denver
Their poster presentation focused on nearly three years of work to develop and implement a system-wide case management leadership model
the team piloted a shared leadership model with three ECU Health community hospitals in an effort to better share resources and support team members across the system
Keith and Hargrove said the pilot program was a runaway success and lead to implementation across the system
Keith said the work helped reduce the average length of stay for patients while getting them the care they needed more efficiently
improved team member satisfaction and alleviated time-consuming tasks for case managers
allowing for more interaction with patients
“The biggest takeaway from the project for me was the change in team member morale
I think case managers in the community hospitals realized the amount of support and additional resources we could provide by coming in and redesigning the leadership model,” Keith said
“I’m glad to see the program has helped them along the way and the support has remained and carried forward as we’re moving along.”
Hargrove said she is grateful to have teams believing in the process and she’s proud of the growth she’s seen across the system
While she said they’ve received positive feedback from team members and from attendees at the conference
the team is constantly evaluating and refining the program to best fit the needs of team members and patients in the system
These efforts are just a few examples of how ECU Health team members go above and beyond their daily roles to share their expertise and learn from others in their fields while serving on state and national boards
These opportunities help drive innovative solutions to help the system meet its mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina
CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina women's basketball head coach Kevin Pederson has announced the signing of Wisconsin transfer D'Yanis Jimenez for the 2025-2026 season
"Our staff is excited to welcome D'Yanis and her family to Coastal Carolina!"
We recruited D'Yanis out of high school so we've been familiar with her for a while and we see her as a big time addition to our team
D is a great fit in our motion offense and she will provide a skill set that we believe can establish her as one of the premier guards in this league."
a 5-8 guard who enters the program as a junior
Florida native is the second player to be signed by the Chants after playing at Wisconsin
following the signing of Tessa Grady for the upcoming season
Jimenez played 26 games with one start for the Badgers
and scored a career high of seven at Oregon on January 4th
Her 2022-23 season saw the guard play 29 games with nine starts in her freshman year
Jimenez averaged 20 minutes per game with 6.9 points per game
1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game in her first season of collegiate basketball
Jimenez was rated a 3-star recruit and 108th nationally by ESPN after her career at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda

COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball's roster is seemingly set for the 2025-26 season
Coach Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks lost five players via the portal and to the WNBA
but when next season ends they're set to lose even more talent
Ashlyn Watkins and Madina Okot will all be out of eligibility
It's not confirmed whether Watkins will get a medical redshirt season or not
Maddy McDaniel and Joyce Edwards for 2026-27
Staley has been recruiting and watching high school basketball so far this offseason
She was at an AAU event hosted by Select Events Basketball in Manheim
She could use depth in every position after next season but here's a list of names to keep an eye on
ESPN does not have anyone in its top 60 players in the class of 2026 from South Carolina
Oliviyah Edwards is from Tacoma, Washington, and plays high school basketball for Elite Sports Academy. The 6-foot-3 five-star forward is the No. 4 ranked player in ESPN's HoopGurlz rankings for the class of 2026
Edwards is already somewhat familiar with Columbia
as she was on campus in January ahead of the Gamecocks' game against LSU and was seen at practice the day before the win
She had 23 points and seven rebounds in an AAU game in Rock Hill
losing Kitts and Watkins is more than enough reason to recruit Edwards hard
Depth at forward has always been Staley's specialty
and she has the tools in Columbia to turn a great high school forward into a pro
So she may go hard for Edwards as she's developing in her senior high school season
Jordyn Jackson is a 6-1 guard from Washington
The five-star guard plays for Sidwell Friends High School and was named the 2024-25 Gatorade District of Columbia Girls Basketball Player of the Year
she announced her final six schools are: South Carolina
recruiting a true guard should be a priority for Staley
giving some different play style than McDaniel brings as the true point
2 in ESPN's rankings and is a five-star 5-foot-10 point guard
She is the daughter of former NBA star Matt Harpring
who played for the Utah Jazz and Orlando Magic after playing at Georgia Tech
She was named Georgia's Gatorade Player of the Year
She can not only run the point but she's a dominant scorer
which Staley will lose when Latson leaves for the WNBA
she announced she received an offer from South Carolina then she posted a picture on an unofficial visit in November
She's also taken unofficial visits to Duke
posted a picture from an unofficial visit on X as South Carolina faced Texas in the Final Four: "Good luck today in @WFinalFour @GamecockWBB #uncommitted."
She then reposted a post on April 20 that said she's expected to narrow down her top 10 this summer
Brooklyn Hall is the younger sister of Bree Hall
who won two national titles with South Carolina before getting drafted into the WNBA on April 14
Brooklyn is a 6-foot forward and a four-star player who is ranked No
Hall averaged 18.1 points for Western Reserve Academy

“Kirby has dedicated his entire life to promoting

to his many decades of service here at Clemson University
Kirby’s passion for agriculture – and his commitment to developing leaders across agriculture

“I was just so humbled that people would think of me to nominate
I’m a man of faith so gratitude to God and all of those who helped me to get there
Just that aspect of thinking of my parents
I’ve had 14 deans and interim deans in my whole career
So much of what I’ve done has been a function of other people and what they’ve asked me to do
All of that went through my mind at one time.”
The two have known each other since high school
Spencer was in Player’s second cohort of Palmetto LEAF and now serves as a commissioner for the South Carolina Department of Transportation representing the 5th congressional district
In his letter to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster
Spencer explained how Player convinced him to participate in Palmetto LEAF
“This course has given me and so many others a firm foundation and broad knowledge of business and experiences revolving around our state’s agriculture and forestry resources
all the while including the most worthy goal of protecting our environment and ensuring the protection of our most valued assets for generations to come
His unbridled enthusiasm for PLEAF and all things agriculture
has become contagious to many students and leaders of our beautiful South Carolina.”
who approached Player about setting up Palmetto LEAF
Palmetto LEAF became the 40th such program in the country and the eighth in the world
it will begin recruiting for its fourth cohort
“I can think of no one more deserving of the Order of the Palmetto than Dr. Kirby Player,” said Thomas Dobbins, professor and director of Clemson’s Cooperative Extension Service
“His unwavering dedication to enhancing the lives of CAFLS students
Through his work with the South Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Board
he has made significant contributions to conservation practices that benefit all of South Carolina.”

recreation and tourism management in 1987 and his doctorate in therapeutic recreation in 2015
and mentor,” said University President Jim Clements
“He has dedicated his life to advancing agriculture and elevating Clemson University’s land-grant mission of education
Player has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto and I am proud of his significant impact on agriculture in the great state of South Carolina and beyond.”

The store was evacuated and within 10 minutes firefighters deemed the building secure
The Lancaster fire chief said firefighters’ “swift” response “significantly minimized damage to the property.”
Police said that nobody was hurt and that after a multi-agency investigation that included local and state authorities
the fire was determined to have been arson
Investigators identified and detained the 12-year-old
judicial officials said the boy pleaded guilty to second-degree arson and will remain in custody until a mental evaluation is completed
“I am thankful no one was injured during the incident,” Lancaster Police Chief Don Roper said
“Our investigators did a great job in quickly developing a suspect
Our citizens should know that resolving incidents like this is a top priority
and we will use all of our resources and partnerships to take suspects into custody without delay
We will not tolerate anyone placing the community in danger with criminal behavior.”

One of them is Desmond Claude, who played his last season with the USC Trojans and is one of the top players remaining in the portal.
Claude had interest from major programs, including the Florida Gators. However, reports surfaced on Monday that Florida is no longer in the running for Claude.
Another major program with an interest in Claude was the North Carolina Tar Heels. But, North Carolina is also no longer in the mix for Claude, as Joe Tipton of On3 reported just after the Florida news came through.

Other programs that had been linked to Claude include Kansas, BYU, and Ole Miss, as Grant Hughes of 247Sports mentioned previously
although Travis Branham had mentioned Florida as the favorite for Claude.
Claude spent his first two years at Xavier and started every game for the Musketeers in 2023-24
he played at USC and started all but one game
averaging 15.8 points per game with 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds
which already saw Elliot Cadeau transfer to Michigan and Ian Jackson go to St
Coming out of high school, Claude was a four-star recruit, per On3, and had offers from programs including Rutgers
North Carolina and Florida not being in the mix means Claude's decision is coming soon.

Florida baseball continued its second-half-of-the-season tear by sweeping South Carolina over the weekend at Founders Park
The Florida Gators (33-16
11-13 SEC) have won 13 their last 15 games and 10 of their last 12 in conference play
Florida outscored South Carolina 39-8 over the three-game series
including pounding out a season-high 22 runs in a 22-3 win over the Gamecocks in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon
That included UF scoring 11 runs in the top of the ninth
the winning team scores more runs in one inning then the losing team does throughout all nine," Florida baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan said
five in the eighth and 11 runs in the ninth."
UF won 9-5 in the first game of the series on Friday and 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday
Here's what UF learned after sweeping the series over the Gamecocks:
The Gators remained without starting shortstop Colby Shelton (.377
who has missed UF's last four games with a hand injury
Bobby Boser has filled in at shortstop while Brendan Lawson has moved across the diamond from first base to third base
Brody Donay and Landon Stripling filled in at first base over the weekend
Florida was still productive up and down the lineup
scoring 39 runs by belting 15 extra-base hits
going 4 for 13 with three homers and 5 RBIs
Florida baseball outfielder Ty Evans has a power surge left in himAfter a disappointing start to the season
Evans has found his groove at the plate of late
going 5 for 13 with two home runs and 6 RBIs in the three-game series
who belted five home runs in the 2023 College World Series for UF
is batting .247 with three homers and 22 RBIs as a senior this season
"We're not going to get to where we want to without him in the lineup," O'Sullivan said
Florida lost its starting pitcher on Friday night when righty Liam Peterson didn't come back after throwing just seven pitches before a three-hour rain delay
freshman righty Aidan King only went 2 2/3 innings on Saturday in a game that was ultimately suspended due to rain
Peterson (8-2) came back to pitch 3 1/3 innings of relief in the completion of the suspended game on Sunday
allowing two runs to earn his seventh win of the season
junior lefty Pierce Coppola made his first appearance since March 1 against Miami
pitching one scoreless inning to start a seven-inning game
Freshman Jackson Barberi (2-1) followed with 3 1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the season and Christian Rodriguez followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings
allowing just one hit to earn his first save of the season
"It's been kind of a weird weekend obviously
with the rain delays and lightning delays and all that type of thing," O'Sullivan said
"I thought that Liam did what he needed to do
he wasn't as sharp as he'd like to be today

RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A bill aimed at limiting minors’ access to social media platforms is up for discussion in the North Carolina House of Representatives on Monday
The House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee members will consider HB 301
It’s one of several measures lawmakers considered this session concerning rules around internet usage and children
The bill would require social media platforms to purge accounts run by people younger than 14 years old
It allows 14- and 15-year-old users to join the networks with express consent from a parent
“Predators have access to our kids at unprecedented levels at this time
and one of their number one tools is social media,” Zenger said
The legislation outlines paths for platforms to be held accountable through lawsuits
Officials with the Department of Justice could fine site operators up to $50,000 if a child or young teen successfully sets up an account
Family members could sue for $10,000 if the companies violate the rule
Reighlah Collins with the American Civil Liberties Union said the measure is too broad and would take away many children’s access to information
“While protecting children online is imperative
this bill would undermine child safety and impose likely unconstitutional restrictions on young people’s ability to engage online,” she said
Zenger said the bill intends to help parents of children and young teens navigate multiple internet-related challenges
“As a parent who has fought the battle of screen time with four kids who are now all in their 20s
“The idea was to put something up to be a backstop for parents so that they can help regulate this and help stand with this battle.”
South Carolina lawmakers are considering a similar set of regulations on age verification
People younger than 18 years old must have parental consent to join social media sites
The committee is scheduled to convene at 4 p.m

Let's look at these two teams some more
The Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes go head to head beginning with Tuesday night's Game 1
The Caps won the most recent meeting in a 5-4 shootout on April 10
They would fall to the Hurricanes a week prior on April 2 by a final of 5-1
In this regular season series the home team won each game and every game was fierce
What the Caps need to do with facing the Hurricanes is control the puck possession
Part of the Canes system is they love to control the puck
he Hurricanes lead the League in offensive zone time percentage at all strengths at 45.1 percent during the playoffs
The offensive zone time percentage reprsents the percentage of time that the puck spends in the offensive zone whle the game clock is running
The Hurricanes also led the league in offensive zone time percentage during the regular season at 47.2 percent
The Caps offensive zone time during the regular season was at 40.7 percent which is just below the league average of 42.2 percent
During the playoffs the Caps are ninth out of the 16 teams in offensive zone percentage at 42.3 percent
The Hurricanes also boast three of the top 10 NHL players in offensive zone time at all strengths
Gostisbehere has 51.8 percent and is second
Kotkaniemi has 48.6 percent which is tied for eighth
The Hurricanes also led the NHL in five on five shot attempts percentage at 58.5 percent for the third straight regular season
They are tied for fourth in that category so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Caps are tied for 12th at 44.2 percent
The Capitals do have a better edge in shooting percentage at 9.7 percent so far in the playoffs which is good for seventh compared to the Hurricanes who are ranked 13th at 6.7 percent
In the regular season the Hurricanes were 2-1-0 against the Caps and outscored them 14-10
In the end though the regular season doesn't matter
It's a new round and a clean slate and another chapter added to the rivalry

Lets look further into the second round series between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes
COLUMBIA – The South Carolina baseball team dropped its first game of the series against Florida
Friday night at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park
Blake Jackson drew a walk immediately out of a 3:04 rain delay
He advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt
Henry Kazmar drove Jackson in on the next pitch with a single up the middle
Jordan Carrion doubled down the right field line to score Kaczmar
Beau Hollins followed with a single to second base that scored Jase Woita to give the Gamecocks the 3-0 lead in the first
Florida’s Luke Heyman got the Gators on the board in the third with a double to left
Hollins’ two-out single sent Woita home to extend the Gamecocks lead at 4-1
A two-run home run in the fourth followed by a solo shot and grand slam in the fifth gave Florida the 8-4 advantage
Woita connected for a home run in the fifth
The Gators would send one more home in the eight on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5
Brandon Stone got the start for Carolina throwing for four innings
scattering six hits and three strikeouts in the outing

Ryder Garino closed out the remainder of the game giving up just one run
striking out four in three innings of work

spokesman with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
shared the following statement with media on Friday
It is with much sadness that we share with you that a tragic accident in North Carolina has claimed the life of a young missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
after the driver of a car apparently lost control and veered onto the sidewalk
He was treated and released from the hospital
Elder Langi began his missionary service in March 2025 and is from the Magna 2nd Ward in the Salt Lake Utah West Stake
He was on a temporary reassignment in the North Carolina Charlotte Mission while awaiting a visa to serve in the Jamaica Kingston Mission
We extend our deepest condolences and love to Elder Langi’s family
and fellow missionaries during this difficult time
We pray that they will each feel the Savior’s comfort and peace as they mourn his passing and honor his dedicated missionary service

Will bills make it to the governor’s desk in time
South Carolina appears poised to finally join the rest of the nation in criminalizing the dissemination of intimate images and nonfatal strangulation — two forms of abuse with deep roots in cycles of domestic violence
This week, two pieces of legislation — H. 3058 and S. 455 — were both reported favorably out of the S.C
putting them on a path to final passage before the session ends later this week
however – and the consequences of delay have been devastating
Last fall, FITSNews published ‘Strangled Voices‘ — an in-depth look at how South Carolina’s failure to pass a felony strangulation law placed it dead last among all 50 states
we noted how this legal gap allowed violent abusers to avoid serious charges even when they attempted to cut off a victim’s air supply — a known red flag for future homicide
“Due to the severity of this type of assault
49 state have chosen to qualify strangulation assaults as a felony-level offense due to the great bodily injury or death that can occur when someone is strangled,” we noted at the time
While the Palmetto State’s domestic violence statutes elevate potential punishments when “the offense is committed by impeding the victim’s breathing or air flow,” strangulation is not explicitly referenced – nor is it assigned more weight than any number of aggravating factors which do (or too often
do not) result in stiffer charges and penalties.”
After hearing testimony from experts last week
455 — a bill that would make strangulation a standalone felony with enhanced penalties for aggravated cases
The legislation defines strangulation as “intentionally impeding normal breathing or circulation of blood by applying pressure to the throat or neck.” Depending on the severity
violators could be imprisoned for up to fifteen years
Lawmakers and experts agreed: This bill fills a critical hole
The Palmetto State’s current legal framework often fails to capture the severity of this type of violence
a victim who is strangled by a partner is 750 percent more likely to be murdered by that partner
Another bill – H. 3058 – addresses another glaring omission in South Carolina law: the absence of a statute banning the nonconsensual distribution of intimate images
South Carolina is the last state in the nation without such a law
senators heard emotional testimony from legal experts and advocates – including an out-of-state survivor – who told the committee:
these images are posted online with identifying information to encourage harassment or further abuse
Fifty percent of victims contemplate suicide
Representative Chris Wooten
who helped lead the bill’s effort in the House
emphasized the carefully drawn distinctions between malicious and careless behavior
He pointed to national data showing a 440% spike in cases since 2023
and rising dangers fueled by AI-generated content
“We cleaned it up a good bit over the last couple years just to make sure that it touched on all the concerns that we knew of,” Wooten said
“The strict language for intent to cause harm or profit
ensuring that serious violations are treated appropriately
while not over-penalizing the less serious conduct
it can’t be these mistakes cannot be used at the expense of others that are not and to cause them harm.”
Both bills were reported favorably out of committee — a major step forward
But final passage remains up in the air as lawmakers scramble to move bills ahead of 5:00 p.m
which is when the 2025 legislation session adjourns
For victim advocates, the overdue progress on both bills is welcome — but bittersweet. As many of them have shared with FITSNews
South Carolina’s decades-long failure to adopt these laws has left survivors exposed
455 would represent historic turning points in South Carolina’s legal response to intimate partner violence and sexual exploitation
advocate warn the Palmetto State remains a place where abusers can exploit loopholes and survivors are told to continue waiting
