Coco Gauff has given Aryna Sabalenka the ultimate praise in terms of how the world No 1 has improved her game in the past year
Playing in her sixth final of the 2025 season, Sabalenka defeated Gauff in straight sets to win the Madrid Open to go with the Miami Open title she won just over a month ago and the Brisbane International at the start of the year
There is no doubt Sabalenka has been the standout player on the WTA Tour over the last few years as she is 31-5 so far this campaign while she was 56-14 in 2024 – winning four titles
Gauff and Sabalenka are now tied 5-5 in their head-to-head rivalry with the American winning their previous encounter in the WTA Finals semi-final last year
But the 2021 US Open winner has now lost three of their last four meetings and can attest to the improvements in her rival’s game
“I feel like she just got a lot better in everything,” Gauff said
“Probably every time I play her is tough and
I don’t think today she played me any different than the other few
“I think last time we played [in the semi-finals of the 2024 WTA Finals] I was serving better and it went my way
“Maybe she moves a little bit better
I think she just probably is more confident
so that’s why the consistent results are happening
but she’s always been a great player.”
Sabalenka herself believes her movement and her net game have been key to her success
“I’m super happy that we were able to improve my game in
…Kind of like trying to come to the net
I’m not sure if it’s really successful so far
Points and money earned by Sabalenka, Gauff, Swiatek, Raducanu, Eala at Madrid Open
Aryna Sabalenka matches two Serena Williams records as she storms to Madrid Open title
was playing in her first final since she won the WTA Finals in November and despite losing she will return to No 3 in the WTA Rankings while she has moved to within 200 points of second-placed Iga Swiatek
After a poor first set in which she was broken three times
the 21-year-old had her chances in the second set as she was a break up before the world No 1 stormed back to win 6-3
because it’s like you’re so close,” the American stated
“I do get ready for these matches and
I credit it to just how much I hate losing
but obviously if I can lose this and go a few more finals undefeated I’ll take that
and maybe I needed to feel this loss again to be motivated again
even more motivated for the next one.”

1 Aryna Sabalenka triumphs over Coco Gauff to win third Madrid crownWomen's singles world No
1 Sabalenka sealed a third WTA title of the year as she defeated world No
Sabalenka sealed the Madrid crown for the third time in her career, celebrating her fourth final in five years in the Spanish capital. This is the 26-year-old's third WTA title of the 2025 season, as she grows her lead atop the WTA rankings to over 4,000 points.
The Madrid final saw the first seed renew her rivalry with Gauff for a 10th career meeting and the first in a final since the 2023 US Open, where the latter sealed her maiden career Grand Slam.
Sabalenka started on the front foot, forcing a break point in the opening game which was held. From that moment it was pure domination from the world No. 1, who broke Gauff twice within a run of 17 consecutive points from the second game onwards.
Sabalenka's solid baseline play pushed Gauff into unforced errors deep into the court, along with a series of double faults that disrupted any momentum. But the USA player began to relax, sprinkling in dropshots to seal a first break of the evening.

Sabalenka continued to dictate the affair and was clinical on her serve
winning two-thirds (67 per cent) of her service points
She broke her opponent for the third time in the match to secure the first set in little over half an hour
Sabalenka remained ruthless and tallied up the winners early in the second set
21-year-old Gauff persisted and worked her way back into it with three consecutive games won
saving a break point at 3-2 to build a 4-2 lead
Her nerves rose when serving for the set with some double faults
though that was temporarily diffused as Sabalenka let go of her racquet during the second break point and saw the humorous side of the moment
1 pulled it back from 5-3 down to break Gauff and level up the second set
That is not to say that Sabalenka was not feeling the tension too
though she managed to hold on and take a third straight game
Gauff went on to save a championship point on her service
forcing a tiebreak as dark clouds formed over the stadium
When the USA star served a second championship point to stay in it
a double fault sealed her fate and Sabalenka’s triumph in Madrid

Saint Laurent Rive Droite Los Angeles presents “Mono No Aware,” a meditative exhibition by New York-based artist Miya Ando
The showcase brings together a selection of Ando’s paintings
wood sculptures and silkscreen prints — each piece exploring the poetic tension between permanence and impermanence
Known for her nuanced dialogue between Eastern and Western influences
Ando uses elemental materials such as steel
washi paper and glass to evoke cycles of life and the ephemeral beauty of natural phenomena
Her work is deeply rooted in the Japanese philosophical concept of mono no aware: an awareness of the impermanent
At the center of the installation are 15 redwood sculptures
transformed through the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban (charred wood) technique or coated with silver nitrate
a material known for its ability to “freeze” time
These sculptural forms echo the Zen minimalism of Kyoto’s famed Ryōan-ji Temple rock garden
inviting contemplation amid the contemporary luxury of Rodeo Drive
Presented in contrast to its refined retail setting
the exhibition offers a quiet moment of introspection — underscoring the transient nature of beauty
To accompany the exhibition, Saint Laurent has released a limited-edition tote bag featuring Ando’s Frost Descends galaxy silkscreen print ($85)
available in-store and online at Saint Laurent Rive Droite
All artworks from the exhibition are also available for purchase

MADRID -- Coco Gauff overpowered defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-1
6-1 to reach the Madrid Open singles final for the first time Thursday
Gauff broke Swiatek's serve three times in the first set and twice in the second to cruise to a 64-minute semifinal victory over the second-ranked Swiatek at the clay-court tournament
Gauff will face top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3
7-5 to reach the Madrid final for the fourth time in her career
It was Gauff's first win over Swiatek on clay
Coco Gauff won her third straight match against Iga Swiatek and notched her first victory on clay in their history. Julian Finney/Getty Images"The mentality that I had in the whole match was aggressive," the fourth-ranked Gauff said
but I think I forced her into some awkward positions."
Swiatek had recovered from losing the first set 0-6 to Madison Keys on Wednesday
"I couldn't really get my level up," the four-time French Open champion said
but I think it's on me that I didn't really move well
I wasn't ready to play back the shots with heaviness
The last time Swiatek won only two or fewer games in a match -- on any surface -- was a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Birmingham in 2019
"it was just making sure my level stayed the same
Sabalenka returned to the final after ending Svitolina's unbeaten run on clay this year -- she was 9-0 on the surface in 2025
Sabalenka won the title in Madrid in 2021 and 2023 and was runner-up to Swiatek last year
Gauff is 5-4 against Sabalenka and won their only prior meeting on clay
The American also won their most recent meeting
Sabalenka became the first player to obtain 30 main-draw wins at WTA events in 2025
In the men's quarterfinals, Casper Ruud advanced by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3
7-5 to become the first player born in 1990 or later to reach 30 tour-level semifinals on clay
The 15th-ranked Norwegian had been 0-3 against Medvedev in his career
"I looked at our stats last night and saw he beat me on grass
"I tried to use the surface to my advantage
I thought the level was pretty good from both players
I was impressed with Daniil's ability to produce power here on clay."
Ruud will next face Francisco Cerundolo, who rallied to defeat teenager Jakub Mensik 3-6
Cerundolo had beaten top-seeded Alexander Zverev in the previous round
For Coco Gauff
For Iga Świątek
a changeover midway in the second set at the Madrid Open said it all
She kept it there as she sipped water from an open can
And when she pulled it off to go back on the court
especially as Gauff trotted back onto court to close business
The tears continued through the final changeover
before Gauff did to Świątek what Świątek has done to so many others on Europe’s red clay the past five years
She beat the four-time French Open champion 6-1
6-1 in a little over an hour at the Caja Magica in Madrid
setting up a final against either world No
1 Aryna Sabalenka or Elina Svitolina of Ukraine
The win puts Gauff into her first individual final of the season
It also pulls her a click closer in her head-to-head meetings with Świątek
2 and the dominant player of the last four seasons
who played an error-strewn opening match against Dayana Yastremska in which she lost the first set without winning a game
She had just four unforced errors on her forehand and four on the backhand against 18 winners
She won 90 percent of the points she played on her first serve and 69 percent on her second
“I was aggressive and I played with margin,” Gauff said on the court after the win
but I think I forced her into some awkward positions.”
Gauff said she told herself she needed to raise her level in the second set. Świątek had lost the first in her quarterfinal match 6-0
but she recovered to win the next two over Australian Open champion Madison Keys
she can come back and play great tennis,” Gauff said
it became apparent that was not going to happen
the defeat continues a season that would delight just about anyone on the WTA Tour — but she is not anyone
She has reached the quarterfinals in every tournament she has played
Her defeats this year have largely been to peaking opponents and eventual tournament winners
all the signs of them were present in Spain: a slew of groundstroke errors and a sense of bewilderment against a player competing at a very high level
Świątek’s defensive footwork and general movement
which is close to peerless and one of her greatest strengths
It seemed stiff and stilted throughout the afternoon in a way that it rarely does on clay
she glides across the court with a lethal combination of ease and speed
then hustling back into position and jumping on the first chance to end the point
as Gauff belied her recent struggles on her forehand side by whipping the ball up and down into the court and out of her opponent’s easy reach time and again
She knocked in 70 percent of her first serves but won just 35 percent of those points
figures that are difficult to comprehend for a player at her level
It was Świątek’s worst loss on clay since 2019
Świątek was ranked 104th and was considering going to college
3 and the defending Roland Garros champion
Świątek beat Halep in straight sets on her way to her first Roland Garros title
Świątek must now regroup for the Italian Open in Rome
as she was in Madrid and as she will be at the French Open in Paris
“She is very talented and can make you run and move you around the court,” Gauff said in her post-match news conference
or tried to do all the times that I played her
I’ve gotten a lot better since maybe our first couple of times playing each other
and obviously the results are showing that
I just feel like it’s one of those days you just step on court and everything feels good
Świątek never won more than two consecutive points and won just six points on Gauff’s serve in seven games
on me that I didn’t move well,” Swiatek said in her post-match news conference
“I wasn’t ready to play back the shots with heaviness
Świątek said her tennis has been on and off throughout the tournament
and she rarely was able to resort to a Plan B
She hasn’t been playing instinctively of late
because it’s not going by itself,” she said
Świątek’s distress dates back to last summer
her actions haven’t lined up with the words she has used publicly
She said it was important to excel on the grass of Wimbledon
Then she showed up at the All England Club without having played a grass court event to prepare for it
opting to rest instead after capturing the French Open
That appeared to be a logical decision given that Świątek had a good chance to capture the gold medal at the Olympics with Roland Garros hosting
She had lost just one match there since 2019 but appeared overwhelmed throughout the competition
Świątek hit the wall in her semifinal match against Zheng Qinwen
Her stress became apparent following the match
when she broke down in the mixed zone and walked through the media while crying
There were losses in the semifinals of Cincinnati and the quarterfinals of the U.S
telling the world she needed to attend to personal matters
But she had been provisionally suspended after testing positive for trace amounts of a performance-enhancing drug
A tribunal accepted her explanation that the substance
got into her system from a tainted batch of the sleep aid melatonin
but the experience of nearly losing her reputation and being subject to a far longer ban threw her
She has struggled to find her way ever since
Świątek slammed a ball in the direction of a ball kid
She later apologized but said in a social media post that she feels constantly judged and is constantly battling expectations
because I clearly see how much we love judging
and imposing opinions on others,” she wrote
“But perhaps a few people who genuinely want to understand what I’m experiencing will understand this
this external standard is definitely not my standard
and I don’t accept my team and me being boxed into external expectations.”
Their results together have not measured up to last year
when she was working with Tomasz Wiktorowski
but she could not successfully defend her titles in Doha
To the extent that her current struggles have been psychological
responsibility for helping her through those issues falls to Daria Abramowicz
who has been working as her mental coach for the past five years
Abramowicz has been a constant presence on tour with Świątek during that time
attending practices and sitting in her box during matches
After Thursday’s loss and emotional breakdowns
Świątek grabbed her bag and quickly headed off the court
A camera showed her walking through the tunnel toward the locker room with Abramowicz following about 15 feet behind

Coco Gauff is slowly getting back to her best but familiar issues continue to the plague the 21-year-old
The World No.4 reached her first final of the year at the Madrid Open but was undone by errors as she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets
It was a thrilling contest between Sabalenka and Gauff with the American putting up a fightback in the second set
Gauff recovered from 3-0 down to make it 3-3 but a but a double fault gave her rival the victory and title
Service issues are a known flaw of the youngster's game, and it's an issue that Serena Williams' ex-coach Rick Macci insists must be ironed out if she is to win the big titles
"Tweaking/ Speaking will not solve the double fault leaking," he wrote on X
Aryna Sabalenka makes history at Madrid Open while Coco Gauff's drought continues "Coco has all the inner qualities to be number One
Her wheels/ fighting spirit and determination is so special
"But tennis is such a technical sport more than any other as the muscle memory you grooved in the beginning that alone might stop you from winning."
Macci pointing out these flaws is justified, many of the 2023 US Open champion's losses this season have stemmed from errors in her serve.
She had six double faults in her quarter-final defeat to Paula Badosa at the Australian Open in January, before committing seven in her first-round exit at the Qatar Open in February.
there is much to take from her efforts at the Madrid Open
Gauff's demolition of Iga Swiatek on clay -- a surface the Pole has dominated in recent years -- will serve as a reminder she can beat anyone when at her flying best
"I was aggressive and played with margin," Gauff said after her victory
"Obviously on clay she's a different player
and I thought if I can beat her on hard I can beat her on clay."
Next up for Gauff is the Italian Open -- the last event before the French Open kicks off
The draw hasn't been kind to her as Sabalenka is a potential semi-final test and she is projected to meet teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals
A brutal draw may be the best warm-up she can get as she bids to win the French Open for the first time in her career
Gauff is already a champion at Roland Garros in the doubles
with the closest she has come to singles success being her 2022 final defeat to Swiatek

before sealing a commanding victory against seventh seed Andreeva at the 2025 Madrid Open
The two youngest athletes in the top 10 of the WTA world rankings, Gauff aged 21 and Andreeva turning 18 this week, met for the first time since the 2023 US Open, where the former went on to claim her maiden Grand Slam crown.
Andreeva broke Gauff in the opening game amid several unforced errors, and with the American's deep forehands lacking consistency, the teenager defended four break points before Gauff broke back.
With little between the pair in the first set, Andreeva found a vital break at 4-4 and served for what would have been only her second career set against the world number four.

Gauff’s triumph is her first over the four-time Roland-Garros champion in six attempts on clay, sealing a first WTA 1000 singles final on this surface with a shot at a 10th career singles title this weekend.
“I felt great out here on the court today,” she said post-match. “It was much different to my first match on this court in the first round, and I feel better every time…I honestly think clay is one of my better surfaces, so I felt that if I can beat her on hard [courts], then I can beat her on clay.”
The 21-year-old was conscious that she had to bring her A-game against statistically the strongest clay player on the WTA tour, with world no. 2 Swiatek having won all previous five meetings in straight sets with the USA star on the surface.
Gauff managed to break the Polish player on three of her four serve games in the first set, as her aggressive game resulted in 11 winners and a stunned Swiatek.

MADRID — Coco Gauff got past the disappointment of losing the Madrid Open final to Aryna Sabalenka and was celebrating a solid week on clay that will make her the top-ranked U.S
moving past fellow American Jessica Pegula
"Overall there's a lot of positives to take," Gauff said

Madrid Open finalists Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff could get a rematch as early as the semi-final at their next event after they both ended in the same half of the Italian Open draw
Sabalenka and Gauff faced each other in a 10th career meeting at the WTA 1000 Madrid event last week and it was the world No 1 who came out on top as she won the final in straight sets to draw level in the head-to-head rivalry with the American
The three-time Grand Slam winner is once again the top seed for the Rome event and she will take on either Dayana Yastremska or Anastasia Potapova in the second round while she could meet 31st seed Sofia Kenin in the third round and 14th seed Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round
Rising star Alex Eala is also in the first section and the Filipina youngster takes on Marta Kostyuk
in the first round and if she gets past the Ukrainian she could face Kasatkina
Sabalenka is projected to meet eighth seed Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-final
but the Chinese star – who takes on either Katerina Siniakova or Olga Danilovic first up – will likely have to get past 11th seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round
then we will get a Sabalenka-Gauff semi-final
Fourth seed Gauff opens up against either Arianna Zucchini or a qualifier while she could meet 15th seed Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round
WTA Rankings: Sabalenka’s huge lead, Swiatek under pressure from Gauff; Eala’s new high
Aryna Sabalenka named as ‘firm favourite’ for French Open ahead of Iga Swiatek
Emma Raducanu also features in the third section and the 2021 US Open winner will face a qualifier first up
There are several big names in the qualifying draw with the likes of Maria Sakkari
Katie Volynets and Ajla Tomljanović hoping to be among the 12 players to make the main draw
If Raducanu passes the first test then she could meet 21st seed Ekaterina Alexandrova for a third time this year following their meetings in Doha and the Australian Open with Anisimova likely awaiting the winner of that contest
Gauff is projected to meet Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-final
but the teenager will most likely have to beat the likes of Linda Nosková and 10th seed Emma Navarro en route to the last eight
Defending champion Iga Swiatek headlines the bottom half and she starts against one of Elizabetta Cocciaretto and Elina Avanesyan before a possible third-round clash with Danielle Collins and a fourth-round match against 16th seed Elina Svitolina
A run to the quarter-final will likely result in a clash against fifth seed Madison Keys or ninth seed Paola Badosa
could face Naomi Osaka in the second round
but the former world No 1 will have to get past wildcard Sara Errani
Jessica Pegula is the highest-ranked player in Section 6 and the third seed is expected to face 13th seed Diana Shnaider for a place in the quarter-final while the winner of that encounter could meet Italian Jasmine Paolini
Sixth seed Paolini has 27th seed Ons Jabeur
17th seed Jelena Ostapenko and 12th seed Karolina Muchova in her section
Aryna Sabalenka survives comeback attempt by Coco Gauff to win Madrid OpenReutersWorld No
1 Aryna Sabalenka overcame a second-set fight by fourth seed Coco Gauff to secure a 6-3 7-6(3) win and clinch her third Madrid Open on Saturday as the three-time major winner claimed her third title this year on the WTA tour
A dominant Sabalenka won four games straight without conceding a point to build a 4-1 lead in the first set
Open champion Gauff battled back with a break to make it 4-2
the Belarusian secured the set with another break
Gauff broke Sabalenka to go 2-1 up in the second set and held under pressure to build a 5-3 lead
But Gauff's double faults while serving for the set allowed Sabalenka to break back and make it 5-5 before winning the WTA 1000 title in a tiebreak
now shares the record for most Madrid Open titles with Petra Kvitova
She tied her head-to-head record with Gauff at five wins apiece after 10 meetings
Aryna Sabalenka continued her excellent season with a triumph at the Madrid Open Saturday evening in the Spanish capital
7-6(3) to finish the tournament with the kind of exclamation point that has escaped her on occasion this season
Sabalenka has been far and away the most consistently excellent player in the sport in 2025
She has made the final of six of the seven tournaments she has entered this year
The Madrid title is her second WTA 1,000 trophy — the level just below a Grand Slam — this year
She won the Miami Open in March and kicked off the season with a win in Brisbane
Losses in the finals of the Australian Open
Indian Wells and Stuttgart have been sore spots
but the win in Madrid will surely provide a major boost of confidence heading into the two most important clay-court tournaments of the season
the Italian Open in Rome and the French Open in Paris
Sabalenka relinquished the Madrid Open title to Iga Świątek in the best WTA Tour match of the season
the loss was a disappointing end to a run that wasn’t quite out-of-nowhere
3 and a threat to win any tournament she enters
But it followed months of inconsistency and struggles with her serve and forehand
Following her loss in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in January
Gauff couldn’t get past the last 16 in a tournament until two weeks ago
She lost consecutive matches at tournaments in Doha
then lost to Belinda Bencic and Magda Linette in Indian Wells and Miami
Both were matches against players that Gauff said she should be beating
She got to the last 16 in Stuttgart but only had to win one match against the 124th-ranked player in the world
Then she fell in straight sets to Jasmine Paolini
who has struggled with her form throughout the year
It figured to be more of the same at the start of Madrid
Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine bageled her in the first set of their opening match
Gauff managed to steady herself and survive that day
with Gauff failing to serve out the match on her first attempt
handing the four-time French Open champion her worst loss on clay since 2019
a buzzsaw when she is on her game who rarely falls to players who can’t match her power
as Madison Keys did in the Australian Open final and as Jelena Ostapenko did last month in Stuttgart
She and Gauff had played nine times previously
with Gauff holding a 5-4 edge in a matchup that pits perhaps the biggest hitter on the tour against its top defender
have worked intensively the past two years to become more than those archetypes
Sabalenka has tried to incorporate more variety into her attack
adding dropshots and net play to her firepower
taking the initiative on the forehand rather than hitting it so often off her back foot and living to fight for another shot
Finding a groove on her first serve and limiting her double faults also helps plenty
Gauff looked to have made the match a contest when she broke Sabalenka in the fourth game of the second set
holding firm until 5-4 and serving to take the match into a decider
Sabalenka surged to 0-40; Gauff reeled her back in
Sabalenka led 3-0; Gauff reeled her back in
winning four straight points from 3-3 in the tiebreak to take the title
having spent significant time at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in the south of France during her childhood
She made the final of the French Open in 2022 and the semifinal last year
If Świątek isn’t on form — but considering that she reached the semifinals in Madrid playing well below her peak
that could be a tall ask — Gauff could find an opening to go all the way
depending on which version of her shows up
not even she knows until she takes the court
the season has reached the point when anything less than a title in any tournament
she came within a point of the French Open final
she will be looking to get two steps further there this year
and now has every reason to believe she can

MADRID — Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka beat No
4 Coco Gauff in straight sets Saturday to win her record-tying third Madrid Open and 20th career title on the WTA Tour
powered through the first set and edged the 21-year-old American in a tiebreaker for 6-3
Sabalenka added to titles in Madrid in 2021 and 2023 and equaled Petra Kvitova's tournament record
It was also Sabalenka's tour-leading third title of the year after triumphs at Brisbane and Miami
She also pulled level with Gauff in head-to-head meetings with five wins apiece
Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are familiar foes
especially when it comes to the latter stages of tournaments
The pair met in another WTA final at the Madrid Open, with Aryna Sabalenka reigning victorious with a 6-3, 7-6 win.
As the pair keep battling for titles, it calls to mind their dramatic US Open final in 2023 - the only other time that they have met with the trophy on the line
Gauff was just 19 when she took on Sabalenka, who had already won a major that year at the Australian Open
many would have been forgiven for thinking the match was already a foregone conclusion
with Sabalenka unwilling to hide hers as she stormed to her bench and began to uncontrollably cry
When asked in her post-match interview what she's most proud of from this year
she fought back tears again as she said: "I don't know."
That match still haunts the 26-year-old to this day, who admitted that while she has learnt lessons, she still gets flashbacks from it.
"That was very difficult match, I got a little emotional and had this little flashback on last year's final, meaning the crowd atmosphere," said after the 2024 US Open final.
the 21-year-old admitted that she was surprised she cried
as it's something that she and her Dad never do
"I do never cry but the US Open happened
I was not expecting that," she said on Instagram at the time
I think that girl in the video was crying because I don't like to cry
I'll cry over a movie or a TV show but in front of people
"Because I'm supposed to be a thug. Just kidding. I'm like my dad though, for real. Today was the first time I've ever seen my dad cry
He doesn't want me to tell y'all that but he got caught in 4K
He thinks he's so hard but he's not."
the pair have met four times - three semifinals and one final - with Sabalenka winning the most recent clash at the Madrid Open
the pair hailed each other for an incredible tournament
"First I want to congratulate Coco and her team on an incredible few weeks here," Sabalenka said
"I’d like to congratulate Aryna on an incredible tournament. You’re always tough to face. Congrats to your team.
Sabalenka has her 46th-ranked win over a top-10 opponent
1 Iga Swiatek found herself in rough waters during a semifinal against American star Coco Gauff at the 2025 Madrid Open.
The match started off disastrously for Swiatek
who was overwhelmed 6-1 in the opening set by a focused and aggressive Gauff
The Polish star’s struggles continued in the second set when she was broken again in the second game
which triggered an outburst of frustration
Swiatek turned to her player box and vented angrily
seemed to catch something that prompted him to book Swiatek
Swiatek looked completely out of sorts against an opponent she had beaten 11 times in 14 matches
and Gauff didn’t have to do much to derail Iga
A moment captured by the camera three games into the second set showed how much the situation seemed to be weighing on Swatek: She was fighting back tears during the changeover.
It has been a below-par season for Swiatek
She has not won a title this year heading into her favorite slam
She also had a difficult time in her previous round against yet another American
who handed Swiatek her first bagel in years
giving her a shot at the Madrid title and positioning herself among the French Open favorites.
the semifinal turned out to be one of Swiatek's worst matches
signalling a need to get back to the drawing board as Roland Garros looms
ATP star Casper Rudd offered words of encouragement for Swiatek

the 21-year-old Georgia native found herself on the receiving end of "friendly fire" during the first set

As nervous murmurs rolled through the crowd and both opponents approached the net out of concern
Gauff quickly assured everyone she was fine
“I’m good,” and continued with a smile
Gauff even hugged her partner before continuing with the game
a gesture that signaled there were no hard feelings and that she was in good spirits
The sequence sparked laughter when the tennis star took to social media and expressed her take on the matter
“Lolll thank God for my braids taking the most of the blow

Sabalenka’s dominance in the match highlighted Gauff’s ongoing battle for consistency on the court
Despite kickstarting her 2025 season impressively by winning the United Cup with Team USA

Former World No.24 Annabel Croft emphasized the importance of consistency in Gauff’s game
stating that the young star herself understands the need for continuous strong showings
The match against Sabalenka marked Gauff’s first final of the season
contrasting with Sabalenka’s remarkable track record of three titles already in the current season
Sabalenka’s victory tied the head-to-head record with Gauff at 5-5

to claim victory at both the Miami Open and the Madrid Open in the same season

facing a series of early exits in tournaments
The final against Sabalenka shed light on Gauff’s quest for stability and excellence in her performances
a challenge that the young tennis sensation continues to navigate as she strives for greater success on the WTA tour

Grey Days is a long tribute to the timeless quality of the brand's lasting legacy in its signature color: grey
New Balance introduced the color in the 1980s as a part of its quest to create the superior running shoe
Grey was the defining color given the concrete pavement and asphalt roads that served as a background for many runners
eliminating the ragged look of white running shoes after they've hit the streets
And while the brand's styles evolved to embrace modern technology and creative innovation
the color continues to represent New Balance's style legacy
The month-long event will bring together the brand's ambassadors and athletes for a variety of special-edition products

The shoe is designed to improve court-ready performance while elevating the creative vision of Gauff's signature model
The shoe's dual-density FuelCell midsole not only provides exceptional cushioning
but it also grants energy returns to assist a player's response when recovering to the baseline
ensuring the shoe meets the demands of every aspect of the game

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and World No.4 Coco Gauff are set to compete in the Mutua Madrid Open women’s singles final
with Gauff leading the head-to-head 5-4 and also winning the last time they met
When two of the best players in the world meet in the finals
Five of their nine matches have gone three sets
Aryna Sabalenka has been the image of consistency on the WTA Tour as she is in her fourth consecutive final of this season
This is also her third consecutive Madrid Open final and fourth overall
Sabalenka has had some dips in her matches here in Madrid
She hasn’t been serving that well and has been broken 11 times in the tournament
Her willpower throughout the tournament has been admirable as always
Gauff has always troubled her and she must play at her best to win the title for the third time
The high altitude and quick clay conditions favor aggressive play
which is the main reason behind Sabalenka’s success in Madrid
She has the perfect game style to flourish in these conditions
and she must take advantage by bringing the best out of her strengths–serve and forehand
and that is only possible when she makes a high percentage of first serves and finishes the points quickly
Gauff will experience pressure on her delivery if she continues to check off her service games
She must target Gauff’s forehand with depth and force errors or weak replies
Sabalenka’s best chance to win here is in straight sets
as Gauff will have more energy and stamina if it goes the distance
The Belarusian player has to put constant pressure on Gauff’s second serve
even step inside the baseline and attack it every time
Make her double fault and win those free points
so it won’t be easy for Gauff to return the favor
Coco Gauff has found some of her best level this week
and her movement and stamina have been on another level
She demolished Iga Swiatek in the semifinals and will arrive in this match full of confidence
and she will look to win her first clay title in four years
Gauff will move to #2 in the rankings on Monday if she wins the final
Sabalenka has always been a good matchup for Gauff
and she won their only previous meeting on clay
Gauff does a great job of absorbing Sabalenka’s power
and it should be slightly easier to do on clay
She will need to become a wall and extend rallies by redirecting pace using her great backhand
This can force Sabalenka into over-hitting and make errors
Gauff didn’t face a single break point against Swiatek
The American will need to have another serving masterclass or close to it
Making more first serves is the greatest approach for her to safeguard her second serve
This will also help her keep being aggressive and not play on Sabalenka’s terms every time
to counter Sabalenka’s aggressive return position
Gauff has an incredible 9-1 win-loss record in finals
Sabalenka is 9-9 in finals since the start of 2023 and 2-3 this season
This record might play a role in this match for Sabalenka
Gauff has to ensure she takes advantage of any mental lapses from her opponent

Coco Gauff handed Iga Swiatek one of the most one-sided defeats of the Pole’s career as the American stormed into her first-ever Madrid Open final
In an astonishing contest inside the Caja Magica, Gauff just dropped just two points behind her first serve and broke an erratic Swiatek five times on her way to a 6-1
Swiatek once had a commanding 11-1 lead in the head-to-head between the two women
though Gauff now appears to be turning the tables with three straight wins
Gauff beat Swiatek in the round-robin stage of the 2024 WTA Finals and the final of the United Cup back in January
before Thursday’s lopsided affair in the Spanish capital
“I think I was aggressive and played with margin,” said Gauff in her post-match interview
“Maybe it wasn’t her [Swiatek’s] best level today
but I kind of forced her into some awkward positions
“Especially when you’re playing someone like Iga
you know at any moment she could come back and play great tennis
it was just making sure my level stayed the same
“I knew in that second set I had to raise it [my level]
so I’m really happy with how I played.”
Casper Ruud matches stunning Rafael Nadal feat with Madrid Open quarter-final triumph
Lorenzo Musetti achieves major rankings breakthrough with Madrid Open run
The American previously reached the final of the 2023 Cincinnati Open and 2024 China Open
is now the third-youngest player to reach WTA 1000 finals on clay and hard courts since the format was revamped in 2009
The world No 4 has also now handed Swiatek one of her worst-ever WTA Tour losses
and her second-worst loss on clay in terms of games lost
Swiatek’s worst ever defeat on the dirt came when she was an 18-year-old back at the 2019 French Open
6-0 to former world No 1 Simona Halep in the fourth round
Gauff is now just the second player to drop fewer than five games on the clay against the Pole
who has dominated on the clay in recent years
the world No 2 has now failed to reach a final since lifting the 2024 French Open final
and has lost her last six semi-finals on WTA Tour-level
will now have to complete a significant reset ahead of the Italian Open in Rome
Gauff will await to see whether she faces world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka or Elina Svitolina in Saturday’s final
she will move above Swiatek and return to her career-high of world No 2 in the WTA Rankings

The latest showdown between Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek is set
A rallying 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory for Swiatek over Madison Keys powered the world No 2 into the Madrid Open semi-final, where world No 4 Gauff awaits after a 7-5
It will be the 15th meeting between the two Grand Slam champions
and while Swiatek has a comfortable head-to-head lead
The American trails 3-11 in their head-to-head but has won the last two times the pair have met
beating the Pole in the 2024 WTA Finals and at the United Cup back in January
Swiatek will be determined to regain full control of their rivalry and ultimately reach a third straight Madrid Open final
with the second seed looking to defend her title in the Caja Magica
there is more than just a place in the final at stake
with this semi-final proving crucial when it comes to the WTA Rankings
The 9 women to bagel Iga Swiatek: Madison Keys the first since 2021
Aryna Sabalenka’s impressive Madrid Open record that only Serena Williams can beat
comfortably ahead of world No 3 Jessica Pegula and world No 4 Gauff
with 1,000 ranking points to defend as the defending champion
there was plenty of pressure on the five-time champion coming into Madrid
Gauff only had fourth-round points to defend while Pegula had no points to defend
having skipped the event due to injury back in 2024
both US stars could have moved above Swiatek in the WTA Rankings
though that possibility has now been ruled out
Pegula was unexpectedly beaten in round three by Moyuka Uchijima and will hold 6,273 ranking points come next Monday (May 5)
Gauff’s quarter-final victory over Andreeva has boosted her haul of ranking points by 270
That means Gauff is guaranteed to be back as the US No 1 come next Monday’s ranking update
no matter how she fares throughout the rest of the tournament
Swiatek is still dropping 610 points and falling to 6,773
though she remains as the world No 2 for now
Gauff was briefly ranked as the world No 2 last summer
and the equation for her to return to that ranking in Madrid is quite simple
To overtake Swiatek in the rankings next week
she needs to win the title; if she does not do that
If Gauff were to win her semi-final against Swiatek
she would hold 6,603 ranking points – though that would not be enough to overtake her rival
ahead of Swiatek’s total of 6,773 after a hypothetical semi-final loss
Swiatek can guarantee she stays at world No 2 with victory in the semi-final
The Pole will hold 7,033 points if she finishes the tournament as the runner-up
and 7,383 points – her current tally – if she successfully defends her title
she will remain well behind world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka
who holds 10,333 points ahead of her quarter-final – and would hold a staggering 11,118 points if she were to win the title

The world number one emerges as the favorite despite a muddy battle to claim victory at the Mutua Madrid Open 2025
it was Aryna Sabalenka who emerged victorious
The Belarusian won the mental battle against Coco Gauff with a final score of 6-3
7-6(3) in 1 hour and 41 minutes of play to claim the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 and firmly position herself as one of the favorites on this clay court swing
Aryna's powerful reality suddenly struck Coco
who spiraled downhill with multiple discouraging double faults
The Magic Box Arena was supportive of the American
Inconsistent serving tainted Sabalenka's game
the final became more open for Gauff as she gained confidence with each point
The lack of consistency and rhythm in the exchanges cast a grey cloud over the sunny Manolo Santana Court
with both players frustrated by their performance for a good part of the first set
and although Coco was not far from leveling the set
Sabalenka secured the first set in just over half an hour
From the American's more fragile version emerged an opportunity that Coco seized
Gauff pressured in return games to unsettle Sabalenka
the American shut the door on her opponent in each game
although she did not escape moments of struggle
With double faults and a faulty touch on the ball
Coco's frustrations transferred to Aryna's racquet
Despite some ups and downs for the world number one
Sabalenka managed to step up in the crucial moments to extend the second set
Nerves and tension continuously shifted back and forth across the net
Although it seemed like Sabalenka's frustration transformed into focus
the world number one smiled for the first time in the entire match when the chair umpire announced the final score
showcasing her mental strength despite uncertainties in her game
This news is an automatic translation. You can read the original news, Sabalenka se come al Coco
but some people have some thoughts about the way her label is promoting her music
including “The Breakfast Club” host Charlamagne tha God
Jones was a guest on the latest episode to promote her record “Why Not More?”
Charlamagne chimed in with his opinion on Def Jam and how they’re handling her rollout
going so far to say that the label “doesn’t care” about Jones
we should cancel the interview because it’s not fair to you as an artist and not fair to us as hosts.’” Considering when the show begins every morning
the late delivery gave the hosts no time to prepare to give Jones a proper interview
who got time to listen to the album?” Jones responded respectfully
saying that she “hears” what he is saying and that she wants the hosts to eventually listen to it
“I’m going on tour right after I drop this album so I still wanna talk about it
and ya’ll can listen to it when you get to listen to it.”
Jones doubled down and said that she “loves” her label and has to stick up for her team
despite Charlamagne continually pushing back
“They didn’t send the album until 7:44 this morning
a lot of people had thoughts about both Def Jam and how Charlamagne handled the situation
“I’m enjoying this Breakfast Club interview with Coco Jones
I can feel her discomfort from Charlamagne’s comments about Def Jam [sort of] dropping the ball on a few things
Labels REALLY need to do better with their talent.” Another user wrote that Coco “navigated this gracefully.”
Other users were more critical of Charlamagne
One person wrote that perhaps he could have “prepared her for this” or mentioned the label issue during a commercial
“It’s super weird to do this to her live on air,” the post continued
he would’ve just allowed HER to talk about HER album and other things she’s working on and still have a successful show
“I agree with Charlamagne but he coulda spoke to Coco Jones off air.”
“While the film is just in the initial stages
“And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
Disney and Pixar’s Coco introduced Miguel, a 12-year-old who dreamed of becoming a musician despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, who ventures to the vibrant Land of the Dead to unlock the real story behind his family history. Coco won two Academy Awards for best animated feature and best original song (“Remember Me”)
The film also won a Golden Globe® for best motion picture–animated
and critics’ choice awards for best animated feature and best song (“Remember Me”)

Coco Gauff is finding her feet on the clay courts of Madrid - and the streets of the Spanish capital as well
The American reached the last four of the Madrid Open for the first time with victory over Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva to set up a meeting with familiar adversary Iga Swiatek on Thursday
Gauff is chasing her first final in Madrid
her first clay court singles final since 2022 - when she was beaten by Swiatek in the French Open final - and her first singles clay court title since Rome in 2011
The 21-year-old has not reached a final since she won the WTA Finals in 2024
but a return to form in Madrid has seen her reach the last four of a tournament for the first time this season
It is a run that could yield more than just the title and asked to rate her performance out of 10
"Probably a nine," she said in her on court interview - although her experiences during Monday's power cut took centre stage
"I was stuck here! The traffic lights weren't working and the transportation were telling us it wasn't safe.
"Once the police got on the road to direct traffic it took two hours to go four miles and then we got out and walked the last mile.
"The day went pretty fast between waiting here, spending the day in the dark and then around 9pm the power came on - but then it was time to turn off the lights and go to sleep."
Gauff could overtake her former doubles partner as the American No 1 if she reaches the final
However Swiatek's run to the last four means Gauff's hopes of returning to World No 2 are on hold - for now - but should she lift the title at the weekend it would be her first singles title on clay since 2021
Teenage star Andreeva has enjoyed a record-breaking year and the early signs were of a hard-fought contest but Gauff eventually ran away with the second set for a 7-5 6-1 victory
"I played really well today and I was able to stay composed when facing set points
"I had a tough match in the first round and even though it was tough it prepped me and hopefully I can keep going all the way to the end."
The pair had met twice in 2023, at the French Open and US Open
but Andreeva - who turned 18 on Tuesday - is a different proposition this year after titles in Dubai and Indian Wells
Gauff was broken in the opening game of the match
but hit back immediately in an epic second game that set the tone for the rest of the first set
Gauff saved set points and wrestled control by winning the last three games and 13 of the last 15 points to take the first set 7-5
Swiatek will provide the opposition for Gauff
who has improved against the Pole by winning their last two meetings
but she remains a nemesis particularly on clay
Gauff lost her first seven matches to Swiatek
but won their last meeting at the United Cup earlier this year and beat her on the way to the WTA Finals title last year
However Swiatek is a formidable opponent on the clay courts
winning on all five occasions the pair have met on the red dirt
Swiatek is a four-time French Open champion
winning at Roland Garros for the last three years and on every occasion during that run she has beaten Gauff on route to the final
This year the 23-year-old has not been as dominant as last year and like Gauff is yet to win a title in 2025
Victory in Paris last year secured her fourth French Open title but she has not been at her best
although the return to clay looks to have kickstarted her year
A stunning 19-match winning featured two wins over the American and took her to successive titles in Madrid
Discover her schedule and how to watch the action live
Having not played since her round of 16 exit at the Miami Open three weeks ago
the American has dropped down one place in the WTA rankings to world number four
The 21-year-old Gauff’s sole title this season came in another WTA 500 tournament, the United Cup at the start of 2025. Gauff’s next trophy would be her 10th career singles title, having only lost one of the finals she has reached.
Here is how to watch Gauff in action this week at the Porsche Grand Prix.
The 2025 Porsche Grand Prix will be shown on Tennis Channel in the USA
while fans in Germany can see the action across Sky and selected matches on Eurosport and DAZN
BeIN Sports will broadcast the Stuttgart Open in Australia
which is also available to watch on DAZN in Canada and Sky Sports in the UK and Italy
MADRID — Coco Gauff overpowered defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-1
6-1 to reach the Madrid Open singles final for the first time
Gauff broke Swiatek’s serve three times in the first set and twice in the second to cruise to a 64-minute semifinal victory over the second-ranked Swiatek at the clay-court tournament
“The mentality that I had in the whole match was aggressive,” the fourth-ranked Gauff said
Gauff will face either top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka or Elina Svitolina in the final
Casper Ruud advanced by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3
“I looked at our stats last night and saw he beat me on grass
“I tried to use the surface to my advantage
I was impressed with Daniil’s ability to produce power here on clay.”
who rallied to defeat teenager Jakub Mensik 3-6
Cerundolo had beaten top-seeded Alexander Zverev in the previous round
The Madrid Open was disrupted because of the major blackout that brought Spain and Portugal to a standstill
More than 20 matches had to be postponed at the Caja Magica tennis complex
creating a packed schedule the rest of the week
