a provider of innovative product design and manufacturing for business
commented on the benefits of its Heli-Mount Tablet electronic flight bag (EFB)
which helps mitigate risk in the demanding environment of rotorcraft operations.
This ruggedized aircraft-type-agnostic product is a critical safety measure that addresses power requirements and operational reliability
The secure and robust mounting system improves ergonomics and facilitates pilot access to electronic tablets (i.e.
It withstands vibrations and shocks and has been successfully tested in the most demanding operating conditions.
One hundred and thirty shipsets have been delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for fleet upgrades – 96 units for CH-146 Griffon helicopters (the Canadian military variant of the Bell 412) and 34 for CH-148 Cyclone helicopters (the Canadian military variant of the Sikorsky S-92).
Improperly secured tablets pose significant safety risks as tragically demonstrated by the 2022 crash of a CH-47D Chinook helicopter in Idaho
where National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators demonstrated that an Apple iPad likely jammed against the co-pilot’s left pedal contributing to the fatal accident
The Chinook had been engaged in firefighting operations at the time of the tragedy
the NTSB has highlighted the importance of securing electronic devices in the cockpit to prevent interference with flight controls.
Exclusively designed to perform in rugged conditions
INGENIO’s Heli-Mount Tablet EFB enhances safety
It may be implemented on virtually any helicopter in service today
In addition to offering a direct interface with other avionics systems
the Heli-Mount Tablet EFB provides unrestricted USB 2.0 data passthrough and USB type-C charging connectivity. Most tablets require 15W USB power delivery for fast charge
The Heli-Mount Tablet EFB delivers charging capacity up to 60W – a significant margin for growth designed to future-proof recharging requirements.
“We are proud of the safety benefits that our Heli-Mount Tablet EFB delivers,” said James Bell
“This innovative product is being installed on RCAF Griffon and Cyclone fleets
where it has performed impeccably under very challenging operational conditions
Our objective is to enhance EFB safety across private
commercial and military rotorcraft operations
the potential worldwide market is enormous.”
“Tablet EFB’s are remarkably effective at increasing situational awareness in the cockpit
The importance of robustly securing tablets is critical
The Chinook crash in Idaho makes this point with tragic clarity
Our Heli-Mount Tablet EFB contributes to superior ergonomics
operational efficiencies and – most importantly – crew and passenger safety,” concluded James Bell.

Bolivia — A powerful explosion killed at least five people
during a standoff between rival groups of gold miners early Thursday in northwestern Bolivia
a rare instance of territorial disputes between the nation's mining cooperatives turning fatal
The blast thundered through the Yani mining camp as two rival mining groups dispute access to the gold mine near the mountain town of Sorata
some 150 kilometers (about 90 miles) northwest of the country's administrative capital of La Paz
Several gold deposits straddle the remote area
Agudo had initially reported six people killed but revised the toll to five after firefighters finished recovering the bodies from under the rubble
said the suspected perpetrator of the attack was killed by the explosion
The predawn explosion at the mine struck a three-story house and set cars and tractors alight
The fires wrecked several other structures and cut electricity
Bolivia’s mining industry stands out for its huge sector of cooperatives — legal groups of artisanal miners — which drive 58% of mining production
according to the latest government figures
The thousands of groups also wield political clout in the resource-rich country where they have representation in Parliament
Cooperatives historically emerged in Bolivia as more established mining operations dismissed legions of workers in the risky
compelling miners to organize themselves when commodity prices slumped and lay-offs loomed
cooperatives have increasingly fought over the chance to extract minerals — hurling rocks and dynamite sticks at each other and against unionized
salaried workers from Bolivia’s state-run mining company
Comibol came to dominate the crucial industry under former President Evo Morales
a socialist leader who governed the landlocked Andean nation from 2006 to 2019 and barred foreign companies from having a controlling stake in mineral extraction
the struggle for control of certain veins of the gold reserve between two rival cooperatives had simmered for years
Gold remains one of Bolivia's main mineral exports
with almost $2.87 billion worth of the mineral shipped out of the country in 2023

The pancake on the left was cooked in the Tefal pan and the one on the right was cooked in the M&S pan
These are the pans that will get the town talking
If you want to save on space without any style or performance compromises
Potential for the pans to scratch each other
The Ingenio pan collection is the cookware manifestation of years of expertise and experience
When you’re shopping for your everyday cookware, you’ll want equal measures of durability, practicality, and versatility. And, as someone who’s spent months testing the best induction pans on the market
I can say with complete confidence that nothing will deliver that better than the Tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio Collection
Not only are these induction hob and oven friendly
they’re also dishwasher safe and incredibly versatile too
The best part is that you can remove the handles
neatly stacking them inside each other in the cupboard
I think I've been tempted to make the swap
you can do the maths and calculate you’re getting yourself a good deal
RRP£320Materialsstainless steel and titanium non-stickComponents28 cm frying pan
1 preservation lidOven safeYes (up to 180)Induction compatibleYesWarranty10 yearsWhat's in the set
Tefal offers a range of different combinations for the Tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio collection
You get a modest four pans in the set: a 28cm frying pan
It’s enough to cover your hob with pots and pans
especially if you’re cooking a roast
The saucepans in the set are made from a combination of three materials
and the external layer is magnetic stainless steel
Tefal says that the “aluminium guarantees even heat distribution across the pot” whilst the stainless steel ensures that each pan is robust and compatible with a range of different hobs
These pans are pretty functional – they aren’t going to be statement pieces that you display on open shelves
but they’re by no means unattractive
you'll be bringing them out of the cupboard to show them off to your friends when they come around for dinner
The sheer versatility and capacity of the pans make them perfect for the average family home
each with enough space for a big batch of pancakes
but they won't be too heavy and they won't pose any kind of storage issues
The people who these might not suit are more clumsy cooks
Whilst we didn't scratch the titanium non-stick coating
there's a chance that you might if you're not careful
the beauty and simplicity of these pans fall apart
You'll need to take care like you would if these were Le Creuset
Getting all the parts out of the Tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio collection was a simple task
All of the packaging is either cardboard or paper and the pans are
this box was the smallest and it came with the least hassle in terms of unboxing
The packaging didn't demand that I wash the pans before use
but I did give them a quick rinse and wipe with some hot water
You never know what dust might settle on pans in transit
I was impressed with the aesthetics of the pans
Whilst I have said that they err on the utilitarian side of things
Tefal warns that you might experience some blush discolouration on the outside of the pans
It's a natural reaction that you can wash away
The design of this range has clearly been very carefully thought through
in order to ensure they are flexible and suitable for a busy cook
This is the area where the Ingenio collection really comes into its own
all you have to do is click the handles on the pan you want to use
They're compatible across the range and they don't transfer any heat
but Tefal recommends that you remove them when cooking to minimise wear on your pan
but you quickly get the knack for it.
the pans are fairly lightweight – even with their heavy bases they are easy to manoeuvre – and they conduct heat well to reach temperature fast
The familiar Tefal Thermo-Spot is used on the frying pans
so you know when everything is at a good temperature to start cooking
The pans also have some internal measurement lines and easy-pouring lips
all indications that this is a carefully thought-out set of pans.
If there is one pan that stood out of the whole set to me
It's the work of Tefal (and frying pans in general) at their finest
I put all of our frying pans through two tests
let the ThermoSpot change colour and then added a teaspoon of butter to the pan
I poured my pancake mix into the pan and tilted the pan around to get the mixture evenly distributed
The pancake bubbled and browned really quickly
but not so fast that I was apprehensive about a raw centre
something in my head kept reminding me that the handle was removable
so I struggled to give it the oomph that I would the average frying pan
the pancake flipped and landed neatly in the pan
the pancake was easy to shift around the pan
and you can see from the browning on the pancake that it cooked really evenly
The next test that I put the frying pan through was onions
Tefal says that you should still add some oil to your pan
even if it is non-stick so that you protect the coating
I didn't need as much as on stainless steel pans
but I did use a drizzle of olive oil still
The onion pieces were soft and tender at exactly the same time that the tips started getting some colour
There was enough space for three large chopped onions
though I doubt you'd ever need to pack it that full
The saute pan is useful for almost everything in the kitchen
this is lined with Teflon's titanium non-stick
so I tested it with another batch of onion and garlic
Tefal recommends that you opt for plastic or wooden cooking utensils
they say that certain metal utensils are okay
I wanted to see how the saute pan would handle something like a bean stew
so I added some tomato paste and spices to the pan
I added some chopped tomatoes to the pan and let it simmer
nothing spat over the top and created a mess on my hob
all of which have been perfectly cooked and easy to clean up after
but it would still be nice to leave them on while I'm cooking
which isn't small in comparison to other sets (some are just 12cm)
but it's the perfect size for one to two servings of porridge
which runs the risk of my porridge sticking if I'm not hot on watching it
I made both a single and a double batch of porridge without any trouble
cooking my oats so that they had some bite without leaving them raw
I also used the small saucepan to warm up 2-3 servings of soup
This quickly had my pea soup bubbling away
There was no spitting over the sides or difficulty pouring
there are some pans that have a useful lip for pouring our liquids
when draining water out of the pan (after boiling an egg
Some pan lids are robust and really useful for draining
(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)The large saucepan is much the same as the small saucepan
which makes it more suitable for boiling potatoes
I actually left the handle on for a couple of the recipes and they didn't get too hot
When I came to draining the water from the pan
I think the grass is definitely greener on the other side because the lids are very slim
Just make sure you have a good drainer before switching over to these pans
The pans are listed as being dishwasher safe (although the handles aren’t) and I did put them through a few cycles without any trouble
I really did the dishwasher cycles to test how well these would work for people who steer clear of the sink
The saucepans and non-stick pans didn't need much elbow grease when I washed them up by hand
and some hot water and all the grease and stains seemed to just slip off
I’d avoid using anything harsh or abrasive on these pans
It's certainly one of the more expensive sets for everyday use
but it's nowhere near the price point of Le Creuset or professional sets
I actually normally use a Le Creuset frying pan
but the tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio one has supplanted the fond space that I used to hold for my Le Creuset
I'm ready for a whole overhaul of my pots and pans
I wasn't expecting to love the pans this much
The frying pan is about half the size of the Tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio one
but they're small enough to stack up in a cupboard anyway
Perhaps the most compelling part of the M&S set (aside from the £99 price tag) is that the non-stick is ceramic
Whilst the Titanium used by Teflon is really effective if you scratch it
the ceramic coating of the M&S pans falls into the non-toxic category
meaning you can be a little more relaxed when you're cooking
I loved this collection of pans for its multifaceted functions; the stackable design makes them a real godsend for self-confessed neat freaks
while the option to pop them in the dishwasher is perfect for busy cooks. The potential for the handle to wear away the non-stick coating could
I think they’d last well if you're careful
we like to keep on top of all the latest and greatest products on the market
To be able to give you an accurate and competitive review of what's on offer
The Tefal Jamie Oliver Ingenio Collection was tested by Rosie Conroy back in 2020 and has since been re-tested by me
so you'd know how much you'd need to recycle
whether it's a box that's too big to lift onto the worksurface
and what you're siging up for when you buy the 9-piece set
I tested out the function of each and every pan
I normally fry some onions as well as making pancakes
since these can give clear indications of how evenly the heat transfers across the pan
because it needs to be able to fry quickly and then offer a low and slow heat for cooking the beans and reducing down the tomatoes
The saucepans get put through a range of tests
I like to make porridge and soup in a smaller saucepan
speedy tasks that a good pan should be able to do without sticking
It’s in these places that I pick up on the quality of the lids and whether the handles warm up too much
checking that the pans are as easy to wash as they are to use
I’ll also compare them to other pan sets on the market
so that you can check that you’re getting good value for money
I often include an option that is a little cheaper or a little more expensive
so you know whether you’re getting good value for money or not
There’s nothing worse than crying over your frying pan

Pacemakers are designed to treat bradycardia
a condition in which the heart beats too slowly – usually less than 60 beats per minute – depriving the body of sufficient oxygen
The INGENIO and ADVANTIO pacemakers feature RightRate™ pacing technology designed to treat chronotropic incompetence (CI). CI is the inability of the heart to regulate its rate appropriately in response to physical activity
which may cause patients to feel tired or short of breath during daily activities such as walking or climbing stairs
RightRate employs Boston Scientific's minute ventilation (MV) sensor
the only sensor clinically proven to restore chronotropic competence
and adds programming options to promote ease of use and in-clinic time savings
"Matching the patient's need to increase their heart rate with their precise activities is the main goal of cardiac pacing," said Dr

and are expected to support a comprehensive series of launches over the next several years to expand our pacing capabilities and help improve patient outcomes."
ADVANTIO and INVIVE devices are designed for use with Boston Scientific's new LATITUDE™ NXT Remote Patient Management system
which is currently under review by the FDA
and will enable physicians to conduct remote follow-ups of these device patients to monitor specific pacemaker information and heart health status. The system is designed to detect clinical events between scheduled visits and send relevant data directly to a secure physician-accessible website via landline or cellular-based telephone technology using AT&T's wireless network
under an agreement between Boston Scientific and AT&T.
the company announced CE Mark approval and European market launch of the INGENIO and ADVANTIO pacemakers and INVIVE CRT-P.

Preparations are well on track for the upcoming launch of SEOSAT-Ingenio – the Spanish high-resolution land imaging mission – scheduled to launch from Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana next month
SEOSAT-Ingenio arrived safely at the Guiana Space Centre on 25 September
where it was then transferred to the Payload Preparation Complex along with its co-passenger
the CNES French space agency’s Taranis satellite
the dedicated team has successfully completed a series of inspections and health checks that confirmed the satellite is in good shape
This included several ‘leak tests’ where the propulsion module’s tank
valves and thrusters were tested at the ‘maximum expected over pressure’ to verify their performances
SEOSAT-Ingenio was transported to the Filling Hall where it was loaded with around 80 kg of hydrazine fuel and was pressurised with helium gas to avoid the sloshing of the liquid during launch and flight
The satellite was then switched on – confirming the successful completion of its fuelling
“The execution of the fuelling and pressurisation operations were concluded with a successful switch-on of the spacecraft
which is yet another major milestone for this project
The amount of loaded propellant will cover SEOSAT-Ingenio for its 10 years of operations
three years more than its nominal mission lifetime
“These operations have completed the SEOSAT-Ingenio autonomous preparation phase
We are now looking forward to initiate the next phase of combined operations with the launcher next week.”
SEOSAT–Ingenio carries a state-of-the-art dual camera that has the ability to image Earth’s land with a resolution of 2.5 m
By imaging Earth’s land in remarkable detail
the satellite will benefit society through various disciplines including cartography
it can access any point on Earth within three days
and will be used to help map natural disasters such as floods
wildfires and earthquakes – as well as help with one of humankind’s biggest challenges: climate change
While SEOSAT–Ingenio is a Spanish national mission
it is the result of an international collaborative effort
The mission is funded by Spain’s Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation
but developed by ESA in the context of the European Earth Observation Architecture

Vega launched and appeared to be flying smoothly
issues occurred that resulted in the loss of satellites for Spain and France
The Arianespace Vega VV17 mission launched on Tuesday
from the Guyana Space Center and was carrying two payloads: SEOSAT-Ingenio
an Earth-science observation satellite for the European Space Agency (ESA) and TARANIS for France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES)
The Vega launch vehicle lifted off as scheduled
The first three stages functioned nominally until the ignition of the AVUM upper stage
eight minutes after departure from the launch pad
followed by a loss of control of the vehicle and the subsequent loss of the mission
The launcher fell in a completely uninhabited area close to the drop zone planned for the Zefiro 9 stage
and hopefully when the final analysis is provided the industry will be that much the wiser for it
The following is the brief announcement just released by Arianespace
“Eight minutes after liftoff of Vega mission VV17
following the first ignition of the engine of the Avum upper stage
entailing the loss of the mission,” stated the company
“Telemetry data analyses are in progress to determine the cause of this failure.“
“We can now confirm that the mission is lost,” Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël said during the launch webcast
and immediately after the ignition of the engine of the fourth stage of Vega
we have observed the degradation of the trajectory,” Israël said
“It means that the speed was not nominal anymore
“I want to present my deepest apologies to my customers for this mission,” Israël said
“Arianespace is presenting its apologies and we have now to analyze and to understand.”
conducted overnight with the available data
a problem related to the integration of the fourth-stage AVUM nozzle activation system is the most likely cause of the loss of control of the launcher
In accordance with their standard protocols
Arianespace and the European Space Agency (ESA) will set up an independent Inquiry Commission jointly chaired by Daniel Neuenschwander
The Commission will provide detailed evidence to explain why steps were not taken to identify and correct the integration error
The Commission will formulate a road map for the Vega’s return to flight under conditions of complete reliability
Arianespace and ESA will jointly present the findings of this commission
Arianespace expresses its deepest apologies to the clients and the satellite manufacturers involved in this mission
This is the second major malfunction of the Vega rocket in two years
a Vega rocket failed during the launch of a satellite for the United Arab Emirates
A subsequent investigation found that a faulty motor on the booster was to blame
This Vega flight would have celebrated a first — the two passengers on Arianespace’s upcoming Vega flight would have focused on the Earth and its dynamic atmosphere above thunderstorms
The mission was to release the two European spacecraft into Sun-Synchronous Orbits (SSO)
Both satellites would have operated in similar orbits at an altitude of approximately 700 km
The satellites’ arrangement placed SEOSAT-Ingenio atop a dispenser system called VESPA (Vega Secondary Payload Adaptor)
produced by Airbus in Spain for Vega launcher prime contractor Avio
Positioned inside the VESPA structure is TARANIS
The following information was provided before the failure…
To be deployed 54 minutes after Vega’s liftoff
SEOSAT-Ingenio is the first Spanish Earth observation satellite – designed to provide information for national applications in cartography
SEOSAT-Ingenio was built by an industrial consortium of Spanish space-sector companies led by Airbus Defence and Space
It is being launched for the European Space Agency (ESA) at the benefit of Spain’s CDTI (Center for Development of Industrial Technology)
The Spanish Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA)
will own and operate the satellite — which has an estimated liftoff mass of 788 kg
In a shift from typical payload processing practices at the Spaceport
SEOSAT-Ingenio has undergone its preparations with a see-through protective cover made of conductive material
which ensures an extra-high degree of cleanliness
Launched for the French CNES space agency as its customer and spacecraft prime contractor
TARANIS is the first satellite designed to observe the mysterious red sprites
elves and sprite halos that occur at altitudes of 20 to 100 km
More formally known as transient luminous events (TLEs)
TARANIS will overfly thousands of transient luminous events – detecting these occurrences and recording their luminous and radiative signatures at high resolution
In addition to its role as a fundamental research satellite
data on Earth’s thermal and climate mechanisms to be gathered by TARANIS could serve more operational applications such climatology and weather forecasting
which is part of CNES’ family of Myriade small satellites
The spacecraft is named TARANIS after the Celtic god of thunder and lightning
and also is the acronym of: Tool for the Analysis of RAdiation from lightNIng and Sprites
Flight VV17 will be Arianespace’s seventh mission this year using members of its launcher family
It follows three previous flights in 2020 with Ariane 5
and Vega’s September success that validated the Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) shared launch concept

First European implants of Ingenio MRI pacemaker with new image ready technology performed this week
July 31, 2012 — Boston Scientific Corp. has received CE mark approval for use of its Ingenio and Advantio pacemakers in patients in need of a magnetic resonance image (MRI)
Now equipped with new Image Ready technology
the first European implants of the Ingenio MRI pacemaker are being performed in the United Kingdom by Dr
consultant cardiologist at Watford General Hospital
Oberarzt der Justus-Liebig Universitätsklinik Gießen
a condition in which the heart beats too slowly
Many patients with pacemakers are restricted from undergoing MRI procedures as magnets may interfere with pacemaker functionality
allow patients to undergo MRI procedures as needed
“A significant number of patients with pacemakers may be affected by other conditions
which often require MRI scanning,” said Santini
“The ability for these patients to undergo detection of other conditions is an important advancement in improving overall patient health and outcomes.”
Fineline II pacing leads are backward MRI compatible
and therefore replacement of the lead is not required when implanting new Ingenio MRI or Advantio MRI pacemakers
More than one million Fineline II leads have to date been implanted worldwide
The Ingenio and Advantio pacemakers were first approved in Europe in April 2012
the devices are designed to treat chronotropic incompetence
a form of bradycardia in which the heart is unable to regulate its rate appropriately in response to physical activity
Chronotropic incompetence affects up to 42 percent of pacemaker patients
“The ability to use the Ingenio platform during MRI procedures is a significant advancement to our family of bradycardia devices,” said Michael Onuscheck
senior vice president and president of Europe
Middle East and Africa at Boston Scientific
“This progression in the use of the Ingenio family of pacemakers represents another step in our commitment to expanding our pacing capabilities and improving the lives of patients.”
The Ingenio family of pacemakers is compatible with the new Latitude NXT remote patient management system
which enables physicians to conduct remote follow-ups and monitor specific pacemaker information and heart health status
The system is designed to detect clinical events between scheduled visits and send relevant data directly to a secure physician-accessible website via landline or cellular-based telephone technology
Latitude NXT is also compatible with the wireless weight scale and blood pressure monitor from Boston Scientific
Physicians can choose to remotely monitor a series of relevant health status indicators
as well as respiratory and sleep apnea trending
Centers across Europe are currently enrolling patients in the Latitude NXT program

Boston Scientific has recalled the INGENIO family of pacemakers and cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers (CRT-Ps) because the devices may incorrectly transition to safety mode
Safety mode on the devices is intended to provide backup if the device is faulty
However, in safety mode, there is a risk of inappropriate loss of pacing due to sensing of muscle contractions. If the device incorrectly goes into safety mode, the device cannot be reprogrammed and must be replaced, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a recall notice posted on its website.
"The use of affected product may cause serious adverse health consequences, including loss of pacing or ability to regulate heart rate, worsening of heart failure
because of the potential for serious injury or death
There have been 65 reported incidents, including three injuries that required patients to receive temporary external pacing
There have been no reports of death to date
The recall covers 48,000 of the company's ADVANTIO DR EL
manufactured from September 2011 to December 2018 and distributed in the United States between November 1
The model numbers on the recalled products are J174
Boston Scientific has sent an "Important Medical Device Advisory" to all affected customers
The letter recommends considering patient-specific factors (including underlying health issues
or problems with pacing) when assessing potential risk for a patient if their device incorrectly transitions to safety mode
If a device incorrectly enters safety mode
Preventive replacement for affected devices is not recommended
shared decision-making may support consideration of early device replacement to prevent unintended outcomes
replacement should be scheduled when the service life of the device is 4 years (or less
if the device currently indicates less than 4 years remaining)
replacement should be done when the remainingservice life of the device is 3 years (or less
if the device currently indicates less than 3 years remaining)
The letter also advises performing a system check remotely or in person at least every 12 months
For patients who may not require early device replacement
existing follow-up procedures should be continued until there is 1 year of service life expected and then follow-up every 3 months until replacement (as indicated in the device's instructions for use)
the Boston Scientific medical device advisory should be added to their medical record to maintain awareness of this topic for the remaining service life of the device
Adverse events related to this recall should be reported to Boston Scientific or the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program

A team of archaeologists from the San Luis Gonzaga National University of Ica (Unica) has uncovered 29 geoglyphs in the Ica region of Southern Peru
found in the districts of El Ingenio and Changuillo
depict intricate feline and anthropomorphic figures
the geoglyphs belong to the late Paracas period and the early Nasca period
is considered a precursor to the Nasca culture
known for its famous geoglyphs representing various living creatures on the desert terrain
led by archaeologist and Unica School of Archaeology teacher Omar Bendezú De la Cruz
conducted a four-month-long project authorized by the Ministry of Culture
The geoglyphs were identified in the El Ingenio and Changuillo districts
showcasing figures with varying measurements and orientations
the team discovered 10 feline figures measuring up to 17 meters long by 12 meters tall
8 geoglyphs depicting feline figures measuring up to an impressive 37 meters long by 13 meters tall
The remaining geoglyphs featured anthropomorphic figures
with 10 found in El Ingenio and 1 in Changuillo
Bendezú De la Cruz emphasized the significance of the discovery
“The discovery of these new geoglyphs in El Ingenio and Changuillo in the province of Nazca is an important discovery for Peruvian archaeology.” He further highlighted the orientation of the geoglyphs
noting that they faced south towards the Nasca Lines
suggesting a special significance or religious connection to the feline figures
The Paracas culture’s reverence for felines as water deities and their association with fertility is evident in the newfound geoglyphs
Feline representations are recurring themes in Paracas ceramics and textiles
This discovery comes 39 years after the UNESCO declaration recognizing the Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palca as Cultural Heritage of Humanity
Bendezú De la Cruz expressed the need for support from private companies
and UNICA to continue archaeological research in the Ica region
The research team’s use of drones and specialized software allows for a detailed analysis of the geoglyphs’ shapes and sizes
This discovery reinforces the Ica region’s status as a treasure trove of ancient astronomical and religious expressions

Devices designed to treat chronotropic incompetence
which affects up to 42 percent of pacemaker patients
April 11, 2012 — Boston Scientific Corp. announced the CE mark approval and European market launch of its Ingenio and Advantio pacemakers and Invive cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers (CRT-P)
One of the first implants of the Ingenio pacemaker occurred last week by Marc Burban
at the Nouvelles Cliniques Nantaises in Nantes
“The Ingenio family of pacemakers represents a significant investment in long-term innovation for pacing technologies and defines a new era of pacing for our company,” said Joe Fitzgerald
senior vice president and president of the Boston Scientific Cardiac Rhythm Management group
we expect to launch a series of devices with expanded capabilities that would include remote monitoring
advanced heart failure diagnostics and compatibility with magnetic resonance imaging systems – all designed to provide innovative new features for patient health and well-being.”
The Ingenio and Advantio pacemakers also feature RightRate pacing technology designed to treat chronotropic incompetence (CI)
CI is the inability of the heart to regulate its rate appropriately in response to physical activity
which may cause patients to feel tired or short of breath during daily activities such as walking or going up a flight of stairs
RightRate employs Boston Scientific’s minute ventilation (MV) sensor
clinically proven to restore chronotropic competence
“The Ingenio device enables physicians to treat pacemaker patients with an advanced and comprehensive set of therapies,” said Burban
“The new RightRate pacing is easy to optimize and is designed to provide needed heart rates for patients to help them feel less fatigued during physical activity.”
The Ingenio family of pacemakers and CRT-Ps is expected to be compatible with Boston Scientific’s new Latitude NXT Remote Patient Management system
which would enable physicians to conduct remote follow-ups of these device patients to monitor specific pacemaker information and heart health status
The Ingenio and Advantio pacemakers are currently under review by the U.S
Food and Drug Administration and not available for sale in the United States

A new plant has been discovered in a popular botanical garden in the foothills of San Miguel de Allende
a professor at Mexico City’s Autonomous Metropolitan University
made the discovery during a routine walk through El Charco del Ingenio
a 165-acre reserve in the tourist destination
Perhaps a few of the reserve’s visitors had seen what Viccon did — a dwarf plant from the same family as the pineapple — but only he realized that it was a plant never before identified anywhere in the world
It grows on rocks and requires very little water to survive
“They have a characteristic grayish-green color and trichomes
those little hairs with which they absorb the little humidity that there is in the environment,” said Viccon
who has spent a lot of time making his discovery official after first spotting it four years ago
“It is not easy to discover a unique species
and even less so at a site studied in detail for 32 years,” said the researcher
His discovery has been classified as Viridantha minuscula
although the newspaper El País speculated that regular folks will call it the “Charco bromeliad” because of the site of its discovery
El Charco del Ingenio — a semi-desert environment that includes a big cactus collection and other indigenous flora — is an easy drive from the tourist center of San Miguel de Allende
The bromeliad family of flowering plants includes about 3,700 known species
as are many plants that adorn houses and gardens
The stem of Viridantha minuscula is between 7 and 8 centimeters (2.75 to 3.15 inches) in diameter
and its green and yellow flowers are relatively large for a plant barely 2 inches tall
The flowers are enclosed in a calyx of pinkish spades (like the plume atop a pineapple)
the plant could prove an extraordinary find for bromeliad collectors
Viccon said the journal Phytotaxa has approved the finding
and noted that there is an agreement among biologists to not name a new species after the discoverer
explained how Viccon made his initial discovery
then “had to wait months for it to flower to confirm that this plant had characteristics that were not entirely familiar to him.”
He then “summoned other colleagues to visit” the gardens
and “none of them were completely certain” of what they were seeing
Viccon then began his quest to get the little plant certified as a new species
With thousands of biologists combing diverse territories all over the planet
annual discoveries of new plant species globally number from 1,850 to 18,000

SEOSAT-Ingenio will also collect imagery for the European Commission’s Copernicus program
which includes a fleet of dedicated Sentinel environmental monitoring satellites
As a contributing mission in the Copernicus fleet
SEOSAT-Ingenio will supplement data gathered by the Sentinel satellites distributed worldwide and free of charge
“SEOSAT is a very versatile satellite and serves many domains of applications
there are many (areas) where SEOSAT can be used,” said Josef Aschbacher
director of Earth observation programs at the European Space Agency
ESA managed development of the SEOSAT-Ingenio on behalf of the Spanish government
which funded the mission and owns the satellite
ESA also organized the data pipeline to distribute SEOSAT-Ingenio imagery to global users
and ESA operators in Germany will oversee the satellite’s early activation and commissioning after launch
before handing over control to Spanish engineers
Designed for a mission of at least seven years
the spacecraft will primarily take images over Spain
But SEOSAT-Ingenio’s orbit enables worldwide coverage
and its geographic reach will span the globe
“SEOSAT-Ingenio will help us to better understand climate change,” Aschbacher said
one important parameter in climate change is land use change
change from agricultural areas into urban areas
or from forested areas into non-forested areas
through its routine operation and routine monitoring of the land surface
certainly helps a lot to better understand a very important parameter of climate change.”
Another goal of the SEOSAT-Ingenio project
which Spain’s government kicked off in 2007
was to foster a growing Spanish space industry
About 80 percent of the spacecraft was manufactured in Spain
while previous Spanish government satellites were only about half-manufactured in Spain
The first test images from SEOSAT-Ingenio should be downlinked within two or three weeks after launch
Lomba Ferreras said in a virtual pre-launch press conference Monday
The satellite should be fully operational by April 2021
director of space and dual programs at CDTI
said the SEOSAT-Ingenio project has cost around 200 million euros
The French Taranis research satellite is launching on a mission to trace the origins of mysterious luminous phenomena above thunderstorms
are electrical discharges that last just milliseconds
and scientists are unsure of the mechanisms and physics the produce them
TLEs manifesting themselves as red sprites and blue jets are sometimes visible on dark nights
Phenomena known as elves are the most difficult to detect
Long theorized with sporadic observations which were spread by word-of-mouth
bright electrical bursts above thunderstorms were first documented in 1989 by ground-based observations and instruments on the space shuttle
Scientists know little about how the discharges are triggered
or how they reach so high in the atmosphere
will attempt to untangle what triggers these brief flashes above thunderstorms
and how TLEs might affect conditions within the atmosphere or in space
The 385-pound (175-kilogram) Taranis satellite “will be capable of detecting these phenomena and recording their light and radiation signatures at fine resolution
as well as the electromagnetic disturbances they generate in the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere,” CNES said in a press release
The instruments aboard Taranis include cameras
and sensors to detect plasma and electric fields in space
Taranis will also study Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes
brief bursts of gamma-ray photons observed emanating from thunderstorms around the world
“Taranis is the first space mission combining optical
energetic particles and eletric and magnetic measurements to improve our understanding of these phenomena,” said Jean-Louis Pinçon
science lead for the Taranis mission from CNRS
the French national scientific research center
once the generation mechanisms will be fully understood
we will have the possibility to estimate the real impacts of TLEs and TGFs on the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere.”
Taranis will deploy instrument booms and begin several months of commissioning and validation
Scientific data should be available from Taranis next June
Pinçon said in response to written questions from Spaceflight Now
on the Taranis project since it began in 2010
The mission is designed to operate for two to four years

Completing a fast-track, three-hour pursuit of the International Space Station, a Russian Progress supply ship overcame a last-minute misalignment and autonomously linked up with with orbiting research complex Thursday with nearly three tons of fuel, food and supplies.

a tech company that specialises in online spiritual guidance
The company had recently acquired two competitor websites for live psychic video chats
where users could organise video calls with psychic advisors with names like ‘Clairvoyant Sabrina’ for $10.99 a minute
The two sites – called Purple Ocean and Purple Garden – are among the few sites owned by Ingenio that track the gender of their users
and the marketing team noticed that they were attracting more and more men
astrology and other psychic services have been considered largely female pursuits – the preserve of women’s magazines
and sparkly apps in varying shades of pink
But the industry has been revolutionised by the internet and social media
and now a small but growing number of men are taking an interest in astrology
they make up some of the fastest growing demographics
the percentage of male customers has increased from 32 per cent of users in 2019 to 43 per cent in 2021
According to an internal survey by the dating app OkCupid
the number of men who believe complimentary horoscope signs are important for a match increased by 60 per cent in the last three years
Many psychics and astrologers contacted for this piece report an uptick in male customers
Samuel Reynolds' own spiritual journey has been varied
Ordained as a minister in western New York at the tender age of 12
he gradually grew disenchanted with the church
he’s been a practising astrologer for the last decade or so and teaches at the Academy of Astrology
He’s keen to put the shifting gender balance in context
“Nearly 2000 years of astrology’s history has been mostly male
the astrologer (and astronomer) of Queen Elizabeth
who reportedly used his wife’s astrologer to plan the timing of everything from signing treaties to flying in Air Force One
an astrologer and empath who has been working on Keen.com for over a decade
used to go for months without speaking to a male customer
Now they make up about a third of those who ring
“Many men feeling like they are in the midst of some kind of spiritual awakening
“I feel honoured when they call at that moment.”
referring to the idea that every 2,000 years or so the sun moves so that it is in front of a new zodiac constellation during the March equinox
“It’s a great thing to see more men feeling like they don’t need to keep everything inside or solve all of their problems for themselves,” he says
She charges $38 a minute for phone calls but receives less than half this once Keen has taken its cut and she’s paid her taxes
Her clients are often powerful men in tech or industry
“but somehow they’re weak when it comes to a particular woman.” She attributes this to changing gender dynamics but also to internet dating; she often finds herself helping men craft text messages (invariably too long) and predicting the outcome of dates
“I have a guy who calls me six times a day,” she says
Some apps have leaned into this new demographic
Foley decided to target them in online marketing drives on the two Purple sites
that the percentage of men has quadrupled”
which are then interpreted by a team of astrologers
It says that the percentage of men on the app has been shifting steadily towards 30 per cent
According to internal data from the app market research company Sensor Tower
Co-Star’s revenue has more than tripled from $210,000 in 2019 to $699k in 2020
Though most of these apps favour gender neutral language
presumably to make the astrology predictions less specific
they also cater to a generation moving away from rigid gender categorisation
And the trend is also indicative of other societal changes
There’s been anecdotal evidence that in the past moments of communal anxiety have led to increased interest in the paranormal as people look elsewhere for reassurance and control
SirCheo dates a shift towards increasing numbers of male clients to 2016
“Politics got injected at some point along the way,” he says
“Media and politics together I think created a certain kind of high emotional reaction from people.” The pandemic has turbocharged this feeling
Sean Foley says Covid has “opened the door to men”
Traditional tools men might use to negotiate stress
but particularly my male clients,” says Paul Mollitt
a London-based therapist and member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
Men have been confronted by life and death during Covid
psychology professor and former head of the American Psychological Association
and they die at a greater rate than women,” he says
Clark is not surprised by the recent investments in the psychic services industry. “It’s a very misunderstood category,” he says. “This is a market that is three to four times the size of the meditation space which has now minted two unicorns and a number of other successful companies.” Driving the investor interest, Clark says, “is the broad appeal and how rapidly growing the space is particularly with millennial and Gen Z audiences”.
There’s certainly money to be made. On Keen, Sara has customers who can spend tens of thousands of dollars a year calling her. Ingenio says it sets spending limits for new customers and operate a pay-as-you-go system which it hopes acts as a self-regulating mechanism. But as Sara says: “If they don’t call me they’re going to call someone else.”
Psychologists worry about these relationships and the influence psychics and astrologers can exert. “It really hinges on how seriously the person takes it, and how they use it to guide their lives. If they do that to a greater extent, they’re in greater danger,” says Levant.
Mollitt worries that isolated men may be more vulnerable to unhealthy attachments. “Men crave intimacy as much as anybody else and much as women,” Mollitt says. “But they’re more susceptible, I think, to being taken down the wrong path.”

A five year investigation by Colombia’s Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) revealed the existence of anti-competitive agreements in Colombia’s sugar industry to drive up prices and bar competitors from the market
revealed colluding practices dating from 1998 to rise prices and shut out competition between 12 sugar producing firms
The superintendent found that Colombian sugar producers both dictated consumer prices and implemented strategies to distribute clients among themselves
they prevented new investment and competitors from entering the market
The SIC reporters further assert that cheaper sugar coming from Bolivia was obstructed by the Colombian firms by increasing tariffs at the Buenaventura port to make the sugar imports more expensive
the initially cheaper Bolivian sugar would no longer enjoy an advantage over Colombia’s domestic sugar prices
Bolivia’s sugar prices would have lowered the market prices
which could potentially lead to a loss for Colombia’s firms
Especially under fire for playing an important role is Asocana
the union functioned as a mediator between the sugar producers – for competition to be limited – by means of trade
The report showed email correspondence between the technical secretary of Colombia’s Sugar Price Stabilization Fund (FEPA)
The correspondence proved the exchanging of information on production
all sugar firms were able to set prices thus “systematically and continuously” because“they receive information from its competitors”
The sugar firms involved are Riopaila Castilla
Ingenio San Carlos (controlled by Mayagüez)
The unions involved are the Association of Sugarcane Growers (Asocaña) presided over by Luis Fernando Londoño
and Industrial and Commercial Development (Dicsa)
All amount to a total of 16 individuals involved in the cartelization of sugar
Although not mentioned as a natural person under investigation in the SIC report
Worth mentioning is that the “Sugar Group property and Ardila Lulle Caicedo group” owned “a 45.5% stake in the domestic production of sugar”
Ardila Lulle is one of Colombia’s most powerful businessmen
The firms could face fines of up to $25 million for obstructing competition in the sugar market
decides on what will happen to the accused
whether punishment or acquittal will follow
president of Asocana however denied any claims concerning the sugar cartelization: “In this industry there has never been a sugar cartel conducting illegal or criminal activities whatsoever.”
“Ingenios jamás han formado un cartel del azúcar”, dice el Presidente de Asocaña (El Pais)

a wireless remote patient management system that works with a handful of the medical device company's pacemakers
has officially launched in Europe where a hospital in Italy implanted a Latitude-enabled pacemaker in a heart patient
The patient received an Ingenio SR pacemaker and a home-based wireless communicator
Latitude NXT is still pending FDA review for the US market
The Latitude NXT system works with two other devices besides Ingenio SR pacemakers -- Advantio pacemakers and Invive cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers
Latitude NXT offers GSM cellular connectivity as an option
The system makes it easy for healthcare professionals to access information about their patients' real-time pacemaker information
It also enables alert notifications via text messaging or email and it can integrate with some EMRs
Boston Scientific believes the EMR integration saves clinicians about 15 minutes
which is how long it takes to manually enter routine device follow-up data into EMRs
Boston Scientific also offers wireless-enabled weight scales and blood pressure monitors for patients on its Latitude NXT system
This suite of devices helps physicians better monitor relevant biometrics
The system can also help doctors monitor respiratory and sleep apnea trending
Earlier this month Boston Scientific announced that the Ingenio pacemakers that will be able to connect to the Latitude NXT system in the future
Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City was among those healthcare facilities to first give patients the connected technology
Boston Scientific explained that the system would "let physicians conduct remote follow-ups of these device patients to monitor specific device information and heart health status." The medtech company also noted that "the system will also detect clinical events between scheduled visits and send relevant data directly to a secure website
This wireless technology will allow patients to transmit data to physicians from most locations in North America without the need for landline-based technology."
Unfortunately, these devices and companion services do not yet make the data available to the patients whose very body they reside in. One patient, named Hugo Campos, has led a movement to help patients get access to the data that is being wireless streamed from their own bodies. (More on Campos' story in this NPR story from last month.)
More on Boston Scientific' launch in Europe in the press release below:
head of cardiology at Camposampiero Hospital in Verona

2007 4:18 PMIngenio to Keep its NSFW Holdings in AT&T Deal? It’s not uncommon for businesses to exchange little bonuses during an acquisition
But every once in a while that practice can land some unwanted extras too
When AT&T announced its purchase of the pay-per-call startup Ingenio today
it was clearly out to expand its performance-based ad holdings
the left overs that shook free from […]Save this storySaveSave this storySaveAll products featured on Wired are independently selected by our editors
we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links
the left overs that shook free from this transaction were jaw droppers -- phone psychic and phone sex networks
AT&T's motivation for the acquisition was simple enough. The telecom giant needed a way to overhaul the online advertising for its directory sites like Yellowpages
The San Francisco-based startup had established a proprietary method for providing small-to-medium businesses with verified phone leads
Rather than listing the marketers and linking to their individual sites
Ingenio's ad network would outfit a business' online ads with custom 1-800 numbers
Marketers were then charged based off the number of times they received calls from the custom numbers
that meant its staple advertisers who rely on phone leads (plumbers
etc.) would now have more of an incentive to advertise within its online directories
AT&T has predictably shied away from the racier (and probably lucrative) sides of Ingenio's business.
"We are not taking on the adult portion of the business," said an AT&T spokesperson. "We are acquiring the pay-per-call and earn-per-call portions, but we are not acquiring the adult portion because it is simply not consistent with our brand."
Ingenio's spokespeople have yet to respond to EPICENTER's requests for comment, leaving the fates of Keen and Niteflirt unknown for the time being. However, in light of the sale to AT&T, it's likely that Ingenio will follow suit with further disassociation.
