In a new streaming series on behalf of Discover Puerto Rico
Miranda returns to the neighborhood to reveal some of the inspirations behind his show and himself as a writer

A frontal boundary and the associated deep moisture moved over Puerto Rico and the U.S
This feature enhanced the low-level moisture convergence over northeast Puerto Rico including the San Juan Metro area producing rainfall accumulations of 1-3 inches in some spots
showers that developed early in the week led to locally high rainfall totals
in excess of 4 inches in a matter of hours in some areas
Therefore saturated soils were observed in many areas
especially along the north coast of Puerto Rico and portions of the San Juan metro area
These were the antecedent conditions ahead of the more significant event that came during the weekend.
a strong upper trough slowly moved southward over Puerto Rico providing a very unstable environment across the region
This upper-level feature combined with the remnants of the front lingering over the region supports the development of another round of heavy rainfall
The convergent flow at low levels caused the higher moisture band to remain over northeastern Puerto Rico leading to better precipitation efficiency that resulted in prolonged periods of heavy rainfall especially in the western half of the metro area especially on Saturday where accumulations across these areas ranged between 3-6 inches with a maximum of 10 in some areas
several rounds of heavy rainfall over the same areas only aggravated the flood problems. Conditions gradually improved on Monday as moisture and instability decreased considerably

local emergency managers and media reports provided evidence of the impacts and damages that occurred during the event
One of the most affected municipalities was Catano and Toa Baja where several reports of flooded streets and houses were affected by the excessive runoff and poor drainage
the municipalities of Dorado and Vega Alta reported urban areas flooded as well as major roads impassable and landslides
San Juan and Guaynabo emergency managers reported several streets closed including the Kennedy and Baldioroty de Castro avenues due to flooding
The Puerto Rico Emergency Bureau is documenting all damages and their preliminary numbers suggest losses could be in the millions

Editor’s note: In an effort to support local businesses that are being threatened by the devastating effects of the coronavirus, The Athletic is publishing an ongoing series of stories to highlight our treasured communities
The collection of businesses around Yankee Stadium are hurting
restaurants and seasonal merchandise stores rely on the steady stream of fans who come through the South Bronx for six
The novel coronavirus pandemic has hit them
like most small businesses in New York City
The prospect of a year without baseball in the Bronx
who owns the Yankee Tavern bar and restaurant
The Bronx has been hit the hardest by COVID-19, with data published by city government indicating the borough has had 2,667 positive cases for every 100,000 residents
Data broken down by zip codes shows that the area around Yankee Stadium — 10451 — is still being hit with positive coronavirus cases at one of the highest rates in the city
New York governor Andrew Cuomo has begun to lay out a plan for lifting restrictions throughout the state starting May 15 at the soonest, but New York City will be among “the last places to start returning to some semblance of normal,” according to The New York Times
The bar and restaurant owners in the Bronx and in the other four boroughs are still facing a long road back to business as usual
The Yankee Tavern is just one of many South Bronx businesses trying to adapt quickly to a nightmare scenario that just a few months ago would have seemed unfathomable
These local bars and shops have weathered labor strikes
but a state-mandated limit on business operations coupled with the threat of a summer without baseball fans is presenting many small businesses in the community with an existential threat
“There’s no way I can make my expenses without baseball
I’m definitely in the loss category for a couple hundred thousand dollars
Bastone made the choice to keep his restaurant open for takeout despite
“I think there were 140 stores in the district and maybe 14 were open
You have a restaurant and you lose your cooks
So I continued to pay them and we stayed open
even though it’s been costing me thousands of dollars a week to stay open.”
The Yankee Tavern has been open since 1927
and they boast a former clientele that included Babe Ruth
along with a few other primarily Yankee-themed bars and restaurants
comprise the pre and postgame options around the ballpark for fans who stream in from other areas
situated in a neighborhood and not a designated sports complex or in a formerly vacant part of a city where the housing and entertainment built up around a new ballpark
“I like Yankee Stadium because it’s in a neighborhood and you can go somewhere local before or after the game,” Bastone said
What if the places we’re talking about go out of business?”
Bastone said he was unable to get financial assistance from the first round of the government’s Paycheck Protection Program, but has been approved in the second wave and is waiting for funding to arrive. Government data analyzed by Business.org indicated that New York state has received the fourth-most grants for small businesses in the U.S.
but that total has funded only 3.7 percent of qualified small businesses — the fifth lowest rate in the country
According to the U.S. Treasury
PPP “(L)oans can be for up to two months of your average monthly payroll costs from the last year plus an additional 25 percent of that amount.” Currently
the terms of the grant require businesses to spend at least 75 percent of the funds on payroll costs to be eligible for loan forgiveness
“I think all the businesses around Yankee Stadium probably need a grant because even if there is a season
it’s not going to be the same,” Bastone said
“People will be excited about watching baseball
Business owners in the Bronx hoped for boom times as anticipation built around the Yankees’ 2020 season. The merchandise sellers stocked up on Gerrit Cole jerseys
Restaurant and bar owners hoped for a deep October run
“In December when we signed the best pitcher in baseball
everyone was telling me it was going to be a good year,” Bastone said
but I just don’t count my chickens before they hatch

star and songwriter of Broadway's In the Heights
he concluded his rap-happy acceptance speech by pulling a Puerto Rican flag out of the pocket of his tux
was for Puerto Rico — the land of his father
More than two years after the Broadway success of the Latino-centric musical comedy about a Manhattan neighborhood where Puerto Ricans
Dominicans and other Spanish-speaking folk live
In the Heights is going to the ancestral home of its creator
Miranda — who was also a Tony nominee as Best Actor for playing Usnavi
the narrator of the show — spent childhood summers with his paternal grandparents in Vega Alta
national tour of In the Heights in San Juan
The booking represents a rare Puerto Rican engagement for the first national tour of a hit Broadway show
Presenter Adam Troy Epstein told Playbill.com
presenter to bring touring non-Equity and Equity Broadway productions to Puerto Rico in the last ten years
so to my knowledge — and the knowledge of the agents who represent the shows — In the Heights is the first Equity [Broadway touring] production
It is very expensive to get a show to Puerto Rico due to the shipping expense; and time off necessary to get the sets
to San Juan make it complicated to route tours there
I'm always working to bring more shows to San Juan
is the leader of the In the Heights public relations effort in San Juan
"Affordability is a challenge given the high cost of presenting shows in Puerto Rico
yet we strive to find a way to have a ticket price in the $50 range
I know that Lin and his father are working with local corporations who are purchasing some seats to be able to donate them or sell them at a lower price
the law in Puerto Rico mandates that anyone over 60 years old
Anyone over 75 years old receives free tickets
we have given away over $70,000 in free tickets
and discounted over $30,000 in tickets to seniors over 60 but under 75 years old."
who is currently working on songs for the new musical Bring It On
spoke with Playbill.com about the upcoming San Juan run
and reflected on his connection to the island
he'll continue work on the Atlanta world premiere of Bring It On before jumping into the final weeks of the Broadway run of In the Heights (he returns to the show Dec
but we're gonna make history." And given how we've been selling in Puerto Rico
it looks like we're gonna be able to do both
but when I pulled out that [Puerto Rican] flag when I won the Tony
I'm going back in — but when I was still in the show
I'd meet at least two people who flew up from Puerto Rico to see the show
One of our own has done something positive." So I'm really thrilled to bring it home
Did you personally try to get a local presenter or was that the job of your producers
My father grew up in Puerto Rico and lived there all his life
so he worked with them in terms of the contacts in order to really make this thing work from a publicity side
but Puerto Rico is that cubed…it's a part of the United States
but they've been hit three times as hard as the rest of the country
So we really had to get the word out and price appropriately
and the fact that we're selling eight shows is huge
That just doesn't happen that much in Puerto Rico
Even the biggest rock stars — when Paul McCartney goes
I did a big publicity swing about a month ago
Did you know for sure that you were the guy to do the run there
I hadn't been to Puerto Rico since the show had won the Tonys — and I went
and I was not ready for what this show has meant to people down there
Will you bring the show [here]?" So I made that promise a long time ago
I was always gonna do this leg of the tour
And even very early in the conception of the show
did you turn to colleagues like director Thomas Kail and say
"Wouldn't it be cool if this could play Puerto Rico?" LMM: Yeah
You have to know something — my great-uncle actually founded the Actors Guild of Puerto Rico
His son is a very popular actor on the island still
So some of my first theatre experiences were on the island — seeing my uncle's shows
and the fact that we're actually getting to bring the show there
This is a tour cast that I've already worked with
I just feel really proud that we can get it there
It's interesting because In the Heights invites us to look at heritage from the American perspective — that is
looking back at the old country — but people who live in Puerto Rico now will see it as remembering that their uncle left or that their sister left
It's a different angle to see the show from
and although the show straddles several different nationalities — the character Usnavi is Dominican
the character of Carla is a little bit of everything
There are so many musical little in-jokes that are really distinctly Puerto Rican
I'll give you an example; at the top of "Sunrise," there's a flute figure that … [is] actually the sound of the coquí frog
which is a frog that's native only to Puerto Rico
and every night in Puerto Rico you'll hear that [sound] coming from 50 different trees
[Laughs.] That sound is gonna get its own ovation when Act Two starts in Puerto Rico
which gets a shout-out in the show — there's sort of little "Easter eggs" throughout that no one has spotted but will be glaring to the Puerto Rican audience
Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2008 Tony Award acceptance speech:
You spent summers there with your grandparents
that's one of the other things that sort of snuck into the DNA of In the Heights
My grandmother ran a travel agency her whole life called Viajes Miranda
and my grandfather was the general manager of the bank in the town square — the George Bailey
the next summer the same property would be a clothing store
It really was sort of this revolving-door of small businesses [Laughs]
I think I still have the t-shirt that says Miranda Video somewhere
The happiest time of my life was having unfiltered access to every movie in the world with Spanish subtitles for a whole summer
and I associate it with sitting in a dark room watching movies
LMM: I was sent every summer for at least a month
and then when my older sister started working
And then I think the last summer I spent there was actually in college before my senior year
and that was the only time I actually was able to drive around the island and see a little more of it for myself
That's actually where I wrote "Siempre," which is the song that the mom [Camila] dances to [in In the Heights]
which is the first song I ever wrote in Spanish
You connected with a generation older than you
which seems to inform your work in In the Heights
Was it less humid than it is in New York City
"I always knew I had to go somewhere else because I just wanted to be in air conditioning all the time
even as a little kid." [Laughs.] We didn't have a lot of money
My grandparents didn't have a lot of money
They happened every other night when I would spend summers out there
It's actually really funny — when I was on my honeymoon
Vanessa and I — she spent summers in the Dominican Republic with her family
It turned out it was just our room and it was a circuit breaker and we just assumed the power had gone out on the island
we were seeing other couples and we were like
how about that blackout?" And they were like
"What are you talking about?" [Laughs.] That was just how accustomed we are … that's just what happens on these small islands
we'd go to the beach maybe twice the whole [summer.] We weren't far from the beach
my days were spent really entertaining myself
my actors [Laughs] and writing letters to friends
LMM: It could be anything from GI Joes fighting each other and using ketchup as blood — literally stop-motion animated features
I got a camera that had audio dub so I made a ton of music videos that would often star my grandparents' dog or any lizards I managed to find around the island
Lizards are to Puerto Rico what pigeons are to New York
By the time you were a kid or a teenager during these summers in Puerto Rico
Did you know musical theatre at that point
Were you thinking about telling stories with song
that last summer I spent there was the first summer I brought a keyboard with me
That was huge and a pain in the butt to get on the plane
but I got exposed to musical theatre really young
The major cast albums from my family of five — we did a sixth grade play every year
which is a pretty lethal dosage at such a young age
I'm always curious about the recipe that creates artists
You knew the history of music theatre and then you went to a foreign or inspiring spot
what Puerto Rico was was time and an incubator
I was about five blocks from their place of business if I needed them
I'd sit on the roof of my grandparents' house
I wish I had time like I did on those summers
You didn't kiss your first girl in Puerto Rico
I couldn't even get male friends my age to play stickball
[Laughs.] That part of the show is really autobiographical
Have you gotten letters over the years from Dominicans or Puerto Ricans or people of many heritages
and that's one of the most gratifying things about the show
People see this show and they see their families reflected
They think of that grandparent who came from the old country
they think of their daughter who's the first in the family to go to college
Everyone has a story like the stories in Heights in their families somewhere
that's your grandmother on that stage." That really has been one of the most gratifying parts of it
that's my block." No matter what block they live on

Puerto Rico is preparing for a new hurricane season
but the island is still feeling the effects of its last one
A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine estimated that there were 4,600 more deaths in Puerto Rico in the three months following Hurricane Maria than in the same period the previous year
That figure is at least 70 times greater than the official death count of 64
the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that the island’s state-owned power authority
will oversee the remaining work on the electrical infrastructure
FEMA also announced last week it had awarded more than $194 million in public assistance grants to Puerto Rico for recovery efforts related to last year’s devastating storm
the agency says it has awarded about $2.2 billion in total funding to the island for debris removal and emergency protective measures
As Puerto Ricans struggle to recover, here are some of the campaigns still offering support, and how you can help:

ARCHIVED - Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela set to undergo 70M euro extension" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
The Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela is set to undergo a major 70 million euro expansion and refurbishment which is expected to be completed by mid-2025
During a visit to the Palacio del Marqués de Rafal in Orihuela earlier this week
Ximo Puig, explained that the hospital extension is scheduled to begin before the end of the year and will take 30 months to complete
The project will include the construction of two new buildings which will increase the surface area by 40%; an additional 16,700 m2, and will be the largest undertaken in Alicante province, ahead of the 60 million euro extension and refurbishment of Marina Baixa Hospital which recently got underway

the building will also house the Orihuela Water Extremes Centre
the Vega Renhace office, the Marquisate archives and a cultural centre
Public open days are planned in the future
In the last 12 months, Vega Baja Hospital has been blighted with operational issues. Earlier this year, a miscalculation by the Ministry of Health left staff unable to "function properly" prompting strike threats
According to the workers' union CCOO Orihuela
the health department made an error in calculating the size of the hospital
omitting 2,800 m2 of the facility from the plans
