The EN120 was preventively closed today, at kilometre 128+600, in the municipality of Aljezur, district of Faro, due to a risk of landslides caused by bad weather, announced Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP)
The company that manages the Portuguese railway network announced that the cut will be “total and immediate” and there is still no scheduled date for the reopening of traffic on the EN120
“Infraestruturas de Portugal informs that having identified the risk of landslide on the EN120 road platform at Km 128+600 (Aljezur municipality)
caused by the atmospheric conditions that have been occurring
and considering the forecast of heavy rainfall for the next few hours
traffic will be completely and immediately cut off in that location
with no forecast yet for when it will reopen”
The company managing the Portuguese road network stressed that the adoption of this measure will “guarantee the safety of road users” and clarified that the decision was based on a “prior assessment carried out by technicians from the Geology and Geotechnics area of Infraestruturas de Portugal”
“The cut is duly signposted for this purpose and has the support of the police authorities”, assured IP, which is in “coordination with the Municipality of Aljezur, within the scope of its responsibilities in Civil Protection and land management
as well as with the Municipality of Odemira”
a municipality neighbouring Aljezur which is also crossed by the National Road 120
IP advised road users to plan their journeys
“especially long-distance and heavy journeys”
Aljezur is one of the 16 municipalities in the district of Faro
which is under a yellow meteorological warning due to rain
when it will change to an orange warning due to the arrival of depression Martinho
which will cross the national territory in the early hours of next morning and on Thursday
Lisbon and Leiria on alert due to the worsening weather conditions

What the article fails to mention is the exact location of the closure
Going north from Rogil the road is closed right after the turn-off into Malhadaes until the turn-off into Odeceixe right across the Seixe River from Baiona
For at least the past week part of this road had been made into a one-way due to evidence of an impending collapse on the big switch-back
Traffic is being re-routed toward Praia de Odeceixe and then back through Joao Roupeiro until meeting the EN120 right south of Maria Vinagre
The road is closed between the top of Odeceixe and the bridge to Alentejo
A lot of traffic is using the steep cobblestone local access road

Bos Some 2,000 firefighters are battling wildfires after several days of extreme heat across Portugal
But as these men struggled between burning trees
it was already declared unsafe for people living nearby
Authorities said at least 1,400 people had been evacuated from the southern town of Odemira
The blazes have been linked to heatwaves with temperatures over 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) hitting much of the Iberian peninsula this week
There was some hope as authorities announced that three major fires that scorched hundreds of hectares in neighboring Spain over the weekend have been brought under control
Yet weather alerts remain in place across much of the country

The Aljezur and Vale da Telha Community Charity Project otherwise known as 'Portugal Partilhado e Lembrado' (Portugal
has now culminated in the presentation of 1500 euros and 50 books to the Bombeiros
A group of seven of the book's collaborators from France
Cornwall and Portugal joined the Aljezur Bombeiros to celebrate the book's success
Contributors to this charity project ranged from the age of five to ninety
whose Lagos- based podiatry practice Sweet Feet
motivated people happy to give of their time in this important cause
the finished book would never have come to fruition.''
'Amovate' in Vale da Telha was the other main sponsor whose support was fundamental in the book's success along with other local businesses which helped pay for the printing of this unique book
put together as an appreciation of Portugal and a heart-felt thanks to the Bombeiros
Local resident and one of the book's writers
all my roots come from the opposite site of Portugal
which includes the second official Portuguese language
Community building has always been something truly important to me
words are not enough to express my gratitude and happiness for being part of such a meaningful project
with so many amazing people from all over the world
joining together for such a beautiful cause
I’d like to thank and show my deep appreciation to Tony and Sarah for the invitation and brilliant initiative
words and actions towards our beloved Portugal
Your kindness and creativity go beyond words."

The recently formed Aljezur Walking Football Club
is now privileged to play each week at the Campo Municipal ground in Aljezur.
From a small initial group of five players
the club now has close to twenty members ranging from the age of 50 to 80
This sport is relatively new to the Algarve although there are now teams throughout the area
the game is closely related to traditional football but without the running and physical contact
The skill level is often high as many ex-footballers
who perhaps feel too old to run around for ninety minutes
it is also aimed at the less experienced player who just wants to keep fit
‘We play every Wednesday morning from 10 am to 12 pm and we welcome new members
We are an all-inclusive club where having fun is our mission
Last week we were privileged to have in attendance Dave Waller
who was able to impart some of his knowledge and experience.’
committee member and newcomer to the sport
who has been playing from the first session
‘ At sixty I was introduced to walking football
and at first I thought I wouldn’t be any good at it
I met new people and I would encourage anyone with doubts to give it a chance.’

But finding a secluded spot takes a bit more digging and a local or two who are willing to divulge their secrets
Here are a few beaches to visit when you want to be one step further from the other tourists
© Photo by Pawel Kazmierczak / Shutterstock Hop on the ferry from Cais do Sodré with everyone else
but break away from the crowds in Cacilhas
Instead of jumping on the bus headed for Costa da Caparica (which is the closest beach to the ferry)
to the quieter stretches at Fonte da Telha
The benefit of traveling a few miles further will be apparent in the space it offers: there’s much more of it
Fonte da Telha also has cozy café-bars that are perfect for interrupting sun time with a midday break
Praia da Baleeira A few of Portugal’s most beautiful stretches are located near Sesimbra
and the Praia da Baleeira may also be one of the wildest
Surrounded by steep cliffs and covered in rocky shores
it may not be a spot for everyone (especially families with children) but it is a great location for privacy-seekers and hikers
Praia da Baleeira, Portugal
Alentejo continues to be one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets
The Praia da Franquia is a fantastic spot for families since the waters are more protected
Its calm nature also makes it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to try S.U.P

adventurous tourists will find the Praia da Arrifana

Not only will you find a beautiful beach (with great waves for surfing)
but also the lovely village of Alzejur and a few fantastic restaurants serving fresh fish and traditional Portuguese cuisine

Lara picks up a book and flips through the pages
comparing the photographs on the page of a dated building with drab furnishings and lacklustre paint to the sight that is in front of me now
Whitewashed walls and wooden furnishings make up the rustic boutique hotel
which finds itself nestled in a valley in the western Algarve
Lara tells us about the hotel’s repeat guests; athletes who come for high intensity bootcamps
and even the couple swimming in the pool near us who celebrated their wedding at the hotel six years ago
There’s something about the neighbouring mountains and quiet surroundings
save for the sound of cowbells from the farm next door
that make it easy to see why guests keep coming back
After driving through the rugged and wild roads of Carrapateira
a gravel path finally leads us to Casa Fajara
only 12 en-suite rooms with terraces or balconies that are perfect for catching some rays or relaxing with a glass of wine from the complimentary bottle that greeted my guest and I upon arrival
We meet different members of the hotel’s international staff
and others who have been there for over a decade
It is clear that everyone is keen to get to know guests as friends rather than clients
The dining and lounge areas were clearly designed as spaces for guests to mingle
which is now much harder with the current situation
it’s really the outdoor areas that makes Casa Fajara a true gem
On the hotel grounds you’ll find a swimming pool
Our summer visit allowed us to enjoy lots of sunshine by the pool
but winter guests will be happy to know that underfloor heating and log fires are just some of the reasons that Casa Fajara is a year-round bolthole
I stayed in one of the hotel’s luxury rooms
an en-suite bathroom with a cave-like shower
and French doors leading to the north-eastern facing private terrace looking out over the national park
The interiors are rich with terracotta and wooden elements with pops of red that brighten up the overall look
inviting you to lounge in the sitting room with a good book or lather on some SPF and sit on the terrace with the cowbells and quiet buzzing of insects as the only background noise
The hotel serves an excellent breakfast of fresh fruits
and the most delicious yogurt I’ve ever eaten
the hotel encourages guests to support local restaurants and Lara gives us a list of nearby places to try out such as the seafood focused
Portuguese food is one of the best in the world.” We take her up on the recommendation and try local specialities like percebes (goose barnacles) and seafood cataplana (Algarvean stew)
we saw many guests arriving after a long day’s walk as part of the Rota Vicentina
a network of 450km hiking trails through the southwest coastline
Casa Fajara is on the route and is a favourite pitstop for many hikers looking for a chance to relax and recharge
Whilst guests are welcome to enjoy a game of tennis
the Casa Fajara team is also happy to book guests into other activities like surfing
We decided to drive a few minutes down the road to Praia da Bordeira where we walked through sand dunes until we arrived at the water’s edge
the beach brimming with families and surfers
A long bridge towered above us and we made our way up a nearby slope and to a cliff that gave us the perfect vantage point from which to watch the surfers catch some waves
Everything we do with the guests is special”
My stay at Casa Fajara was the first in a West-East Algarvean road trip
there was a little enclave of solace to be found deep between the mountains and the cowbells
