Alvalade was where the spell was first cast
To watch him play was to witness something uncoachable: feints that defied physics
a style that felt more like instinct than instruction
The trivela was more than just a technique—it was a statement
football’s history is littered with wizards who never found a kingdom
For every Garrincha who was loved for his wildness
The boy who shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting was just as dazzling
but where Ronaldo sculpted himself into an icon of modern efficiency
an outlaw in a game that increasingly demanded structure
Cândido de Oliveira: Portuguese Football’s James Bond?
Or is it something less tangible—the way they make you feel
but too volatile to be worshipped in the way history demands
This is the story of Ricardo Quaresma—the magic
and the moments that made him unforgettable
Quaresma did not play football; he performed it
and his finishing—when it arrived—felt like the climax of an unpredictable fairytale
yet so perfect in its execution that it felt like a form of defiance
When he curled the ball with the outside of his boot
it was as if he was rejecting the fundamental laws of the game
Why cut inside and strike with his weaker left when he could bend physics itself
Why send a normal cross when he could make the ball dance
The trivela was a declaration: I will not be like the rest
Joshua Zirkzee: The Man Who Plays in Reverse
Coaches build teams like architects design cities—every space accounted for
every movement designed to maximize efficiency
was an alleyway that led to a world of chaos
Quaresma was supposed to be the heir to Luis Figo
the club he joined was not yet the smooth-running
total-football machine it would become under Pep Guardiola
he found a manager who did not know what to do with him
Quaresma’s nature—his unwillingness to bend to tactical discipline
his need to play with an almost street-like freedom—clashed with Rijkaard’s attempts to impose control
The result was a player out of sync with his surroundings
Temporal Genius of Ancelotti: Football as a Question of When, Not How
had moved to Manchester United that same summer
but his mentality—his obsessive desire to refine
to mold himself into the perfect athlete—set him on a different trajectory
Some players are built for the big leagues; others need a place to be kings
He was not a cog in a system but the system itself
He would follow a moment of genius with an afternoon of frustration
Zinedine Zidane — built their legacy on repetition
Not His Players, Not His Players, Not His Players … The Hopeless Plight of Manchester United
The second act of his career should have been the redemption
the moment where he proved he belonged among football’s elite
When José Mourinho took him to Inter Milan in 2008
and sculpted teams with an almost militaristic precision
He became a luxury player in a team built for efficiency
The Special One had no room for an artist who painted outside the lines
forgettable loan spell where he was never more than a footnote
Football’s False Prophets: The Cult of ‘Project’ Managers and the Death of Accountability
Why reposition your body when you can wrap your strong foot around your standing leg and strike
it felt like a final stand against the world of efficiency
Pep’s City: From Clockwork Precision To Rusty Gears
He was football’s jazz musician—brilliant in improvisation
but lost when the notes required structure
shifts in balance so subtle they left defenders grasping at air
choosing instead to rewrite the script with a trivela that bent away into nothingness
The Antagonist: How Football’s Great Minds Build, Destroy, and Redefine the Game
but football at the elite level is a game of sequences
and he refused to be anything but the magician
The greatest players are often those who fit into a system
who bend but do not break under its tactical weight
Kim Min-jae: A Defender Rewriting the Script of Greatness
It needs players who refuse to be confined by whiteboards and training drills
there must be a Quaresma—a man who reminds us that football

Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres scored one goal and created two more as Sporting clocked up a fourth successive win to secure their position at the top of the table with a 3-1 triumph over Famalicão in Lisbon tonight
It was an explosive start to the match as a brilliant run and cross by Gyökeres inside the first minute set up Trincão
who completely missed his kick but the onrushing Fresneda saved his blushes by drilling into the net on the run
Famalicão gathered themselves and showed why they have been in good form lately
pushing Sporting back with Gustavo Sá at the heart of most of their enterprising play
When Óscar Aranda equalised from the penalty spot after Diomande had fouled Václav Sejk it was no more than the visitors deserved
The Lions came out fired up for the second half and their pressure told when Maxi Araújo was upended in the box and Gyökeres fired in the penalty
especially when Araújo was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge on Sá with ten minutes remaining
The home fans could breathe a sigh of relief in the 88th minute when a fine move allowed Gyökeres to tee up substitute Geny Catamo for a tap-in and make sure of the three points.

Braga hold Sporting to 1-1 draw at Alvalade | OneFootballPortuGOAL
Sporting failed in their attempt to reclaim top spot in the Primeira Liga, drawing 1-1 at home to Braga, thus enabling Benfica to go two points clear at the summit with six matches remaining in the 2024/25 season
Viktor Gyökeres scoring directly from a free kick after earlier having a goal ruled out because he was three centimetres offside
The domination of the home team subsided as Braga came back into it
but with time ticking away it seemed Sporting would hold on until late substitute Afonso Patrão headed in a dramatic equaliser in the 87th minute
The point is enough for Braga to overtake Porto and move up to third place in the league, while Sporting must now play catchup against Lisbon rivals Benfica

we’ve grown accustomed to the barrage of lists telling us where to travel during the next 12 months
Often these places are a country or even a whole region – you could spend an entire year exploring just one of the locations listed and still barely make a dent
We like to travel on a smaller scale. Forget countries and cities, for us the neighborhood is the ideal unit of exploration. Celebrating neighborhood life and businesses is, of course, essential to what we do as Culinary Backstreets. Since our founding in 2012, we’ve been dedicated to publishing the stories of unsung local culinary heroes and visiting them on our food walks
particularly in neighborhoods that are off the beaten path
while a justifiably important economic force in many cities
can devastate the urban ecosystem if not distributed responsibly into neighborhoods otherwise neglected by the travel industry
two years ago we launched an annual “Neighborhoods to Visit” guide
featuring areas off the main tourist trail from all the cities that we cover
Yet as various other annual “must-visit” guides have made clear
following the same formula year after year can lead to selecting destinations solely for the purpose of a complete list
focusing on a smaller selection of neighborhoods (as well as the people and places that keep them going) that truly deserve the extra attention
Below is a compilation of six less-visited areas that our correspondents are eager to explore this year:
Lisbon: Alvalade
Close to the airport
the neighborhood of Alvalade is on the periphery of Lisbon
But its distance from the city center has perhaps been a blessing in disguise
preserving the vibrancy of this residential neighborhood
Alvalade was mostly built over farms and agricultural fields
Its modernist urban plan brought a breath of fresh air into the city
as architects had huge swaths of land to play with
Both middle-class and rent-controlled buildings in the area have won awards and inspired architects over the years
it’s a neighborhood with an amazing density of shops
Maybe because of that we don’t really notice the lack of historical landmarks
With only a few short-term rentals, hotels and hostels, it’s rare to see tourists in this part of town. But there’s a good chance of bumping into someone you know, especially in the busy shopping area of Avenida da Igreja and Avenida Rio de Janeiro around the market. We even bumped into our CB compatriot Tiago Pais and his bike while strolling around the neighborhood recently
and I wouldn’t choose any other neighborhood to concentrate my life in this way
In the restaurants – there are so many good ones – they call you by your name
in the grocery shops we can pay another day
in the streets we always find someone we know
which means you can use a bike as your primary transportation.”
Like in Campo de Ourique (another flat and lively shopping neighborhood)
Alvalade has a central market that gathers many other businesses around it
an old coffee and tea specialist that originally opened in Baixa in 1934 but moved to Alvalade in 1957
Paulo Manso and his daughter Inês Manso are now taking care of the lovely shop
where you can buy origin coffee beans from Angola
“In the last five years we started to have more young people buying here in addition to our usual clients,” Paulo tells us
attracting locals with fresh produce and food shops inside
Sporting’s Primeira Liga title defence suffered its first setback as the sensational Santa Clara pulled off a shock 1-0 victory at Alvalade
Vinícius Lopes put the Azorean team ahead in the 33rd minute with a ferocious shot that left Vladan Kovacevic rooted to his spot
Sporting could find no way back and looked physically and mentally drained well before the end of the match
in contrast to a superbly organised Santa Clara who remained composed under pressure and were always a threat on the break
With two defeats in his first three matches
it is far from an ideal start to life as new Sporting coach for João Pereira.
Man City fans in Lisbon are expected to turn up in huge numbers on 5 November 2024 when their side play against hosts Sporting Lisbon in the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League
The last two meetings between these sides happened in 2022 and in the same competition. Pep Guardiola led his side to a massive 5-0 in the first leg away from home at Estadio Jose Alvalade before a second leg in Manchester ended in a 0-0 stalemate
This is a full matchday guide to Estadio Jose Alvalade
especially for Man City fans in Lisbon planning to attend the highly anticipated game
According to information on Sporting Lisbon vs Man City ticket allocation
there will be at least 2,510 Man City fans in Lisbon on matchday
we expect more than 3,000 away supporters inside Estadio Jose Alvalade on matchday
With Man City announcing that tickets for their clash with Sporting CP are now sold out
some supporters are expected to acquire tickets from third-party resale platforms such as SeatPick
Man City fans in Lisbon will occupy the South Stand at Estadio Jose Alvalade
It is the designated seating location for away fans who visit the venue on matchdays
Also known as Stand A, the South Stand at Sporting CP's home ground can accommodate up to 24,242 supporters. So, while only 2,510 Sporting CP vs Man City tickets have been allocated to the away side
those who have acquired tickets elsewhere ahead of the clash are expected to fill up more spaces
Man City head to Estadio Jose Alvalade when coach Ruben Amorim agreed to a Manchester United switch following the sacking of Erik ten Hag
It should be remembered that Amorim was previously linked with a potential move to Etihad Stadium should Pep Guardiola leave
Recent developments undoubtedly put Amorim under pressure to defeat the Cityzens and leave Estadio Jose Alvalade as a hero
BREAKING: Manchester United are set to pay €10m exit clause for Rúben Amorim to become new manager
Sporting confirm formal communication received from #MUFC for Amorim to be appointed

Lisbon is approximately 100 square kilometres
The city hosts two of the most popular football clubs in Primera Liga
so you would expect to run out of options when it comes to finding an ideal beer joint or eatery
having a pint of local brews such as Ginjinha
or Madeira should be top of your bucket list ahead of the Sporting CP vs
The following are some of the places where Man City fans in Lisbon can eat and drink during their stay in the Portuguese capital
getting around Lisbon and even to Estadio Jose Alvalade should be easy for visiting Man City fans
The home ground to Sporting CP is located in the northern part of the city and is only seven kilometres away from the city centre and just two kilometres from rivals Benfica's stadium
the metro is the quickest and most convenient means of transport from the city centre to the venue
Use the yellow or green metro lines and alight at Campo Granda station near the stadium
Man City fans in Lisbon can also use a taxi or a bus to reach the stadium within four minutes
which ply the route every 15 minutes and charges $3
A taxi from the city centre to Estadio Jose Alvalade should take approximately eight minutes covering a distance of 7.5 kilometres
Subway trains are the cheapest option for Man City fans in Lisbon looking to save on costs and should take approximately 16 minutes for just $2 or up to $8 per trip
Metro Lisboa plies the route every 10 minutes
Walking to Estadio Jose Alvade from the city centre isn't a bad idea but considering that would take you up to 1 hour and 13 minutes
it is not always a viable option for football fans

Sporting ended a series of four straight defeats by beating Boavista 3-2 at Alvalade tonight
The Lions attacked the visitors incessantly virtually the whole match
but once again revealed a defensive insecurity that has dogged the team since Ruben Amorim left
Viktor Gyökeres put Sporting ahead midway through the first half
but Boavista equalised on the stroke of half time from their only effort up until then
A Francisco Trincão brace in the second half earned the Portuguese champions the three points
although in between Boavista equalised for a second time through Bruno Onyemaechi and the performance will do little to ease Sporting supporters’ worries about the capacities of the new coach João Pereira.
Sporting made light work of AVS in Lisbon tonight
clocking up a 6th successive victory in the Primeira Liga to stay three points clear at the top of the standings
Star man Viktor Gyökeres was temporarily upstaged by Conrad Harder
the teenage Danish striker giving the hosts the lead on his full debut in the Portuguese capital
But the Swede soon took centre stage as per usual, scoring goals either side of half time as the Lions ran out easy winners. Tom Kundert reports from Alvalade.
With Gonçalo Inácio and Pedro Gonçalves out injured
Sporting coach Rúben Amorim was forced to shuffle the pack
meaning a full debut for 19-year-old Danish striker Conrad Harder
41-year-old striker Nenê was also out injured
but the northern club’s other high-profile veteran
the legendary Mexican goalkeeper playing his second game in the Primeira Liga since signing at the end of the transfer window
with Sporting circling the AVS goal menacingly from the off
Ochoa was called into action twice early on
racing out of his goal to thwart Gyökeres then diving athletically to his right to push Trincão’s shot around the post
Quenda then blasted an effort over and it was only a matter of time before the home side broke the deadlock
Sporting’s three Nordic players combined beautifully
the former then threading the ball into the path of his compatriot
striking the ball hard and low into the corner of the net with his favoured left foot
Sporting continued to overwhelm AVS all over the pitch
creating chances at will and completely shutting off any hope the visitors may have harboured of getting back into the match
The 39-year-old Ochoa did not pass up the opportunity to prove what a fine goalkeeper he remains
the Mexican making tremendous saves from Gyökeres and Trincão to delay the inevitable
Daniel Bragança also came close and Sporting had a claim for a penalty turned down as AVS somehow survived without conceding again until just before the break
In first-half stoppage time Sporting at last doubled their lead
Gyökeres producing a neat finish from a Harder pass
A goal and an assist on his first start is a promising beginning for Harder
and the potential strike partnership between Harder and Gyökeres gives Amorim another useful alternative in Sporting’s multifaceted attacking armoury
especially when Pedro Gonçalves is unavailable
The second half was not a whole lot different
with Sporting dominating possession and frequently creating danger without ever having to fully put their foot down on the pedal
While Sporting as a collective and several individuals appeared to be conserving energy with matches coming thick and fast
a certain Viktor Gyökeres does not know the meaning of taking is easy
The Swedish striker struck again in the 70th minute
finishing with aplomb from a fine Trincão pass
and he utterly refused to stop giving the AVS defenders a hard time all night
That AVS did not concede more goals is down to the woodwork
as Maxi Araújo’s shot thumped off the post and back into play
who made another outstanding save from Diomande.
Portugal’s top flight is always an unbalanced league with a big gap in quality between the top teams and the also-rans
but this season that gap seems to have become a chasm
Whether it is because the smaller clubs have got weaker or because this Sporting side is a truly special team is up for debate
but this was a ridiculously one-sided game of football
At no point was there any hint of doubt about the what the final outcome would be
Amorim’s men have now won all six of their Primeira Liga matches
They have scored three goals or more in every Liga match apart from against Porto
The overriding aim for the Green and Whites is to win back-to-back championships and thus become the first Sporting team to do so for 70 years
But a secondary goal should be to strive to go down as one of the great Portuguese club sides in modern football history
José Mourinho’s Porto. To do so they will have to maintain their form throughout the season and/or transpose their spectacular results onto the European stage.

Those farms may be long gone, but this residential neighborhood is still famous for its high-quality produce – except rather than being grown on the land
Although the produce comes from MARL (the large central wholesale market north of Lisbon)
a lot of it is still grown in the fertile region north and west of Lisbon
Despite losing ground to supermarkets over the years
Mercado de Alvalade has recently started drawing a younger crowd interested in finding farm-fresh products – and when the pandemic hit
it became an essential supplier of fresh produce
fish and other food products to the neighborhood’s residents
While not all the vendors have been able to weather the storm
the ones that remain paint a picture of a market that’s once again a lifeline for the neighborhood
its modernist urban planning was a breath of fresh air in the city
It was for the residents of these buildings
it was considered a “model market” thanks to its concrete structure and unadorned architecture that bordered on Brutalist as well as its large size – almost 3,000 square meters
the Lisbon mayor and a local priest came for the ceremony
A large crowd from the neighborhood gathered to see the market that would fuel the expansion of this area and its growing population
Similar to other markets in Lisbon
mothers traditionally pass down stalls at the Mercado de Alvalade to their daughters
as well as their immense experience and knowledge
did just that: Her daughter now runs the stall
which is known for its high-quality fruits and vegetables
we ask Fátima how the family is faring almost one year on from the start of the pandemic
While filling a bag with Algarve tangerines (due to Covid-19 restrictions
Fátima explains that what saved the business during the first lockdown (from March to May) was home delivery
“We were open but many customers because of their age were afraid of coming to the market
so we started delivering in the neighborhood
The stall in front of us unfortunately was not so lucky,” she says
She lives on the south side of the Tagus River but still comes to the market most days
“My daughter used to come every day with me [when she was a kid]
she studied in the neighborhood and now her daughter studies in the school around here
the opening of supermarkets is what changed customers’ habits and led to a decrease in shoppers at the municipal markets
more recently she has seen an increase in young clients
which can only bring “hope for the future.” Bracing for the current lockdown
which may last much longer than the one-month period first announced
Fátima and her daughter will keep the stall running and are continuing to offer home delivery
the big customers – the restaurants – will stop buying in large quantities
as they are only allowed to operate for takeaway and delivery
The colorful produce stalls at Mercado de Alvalade are largely decorated with love and a tidiness that you don’t see so often at other markets
vendors tell us that the high monthly fees charged by the Junta de Freguesia (the local municipality authority) and the restrictions around adding decorative elements are the reasons why the market doesn’t look as good as they believe it could
we find ourselves taken by the ornate stands stocked with specialty cheese and charcuterie
where everything looks spotless and mouthwatering
it has been interesting to see the changes over the years
admires the quality and the consistency as well as the ways in which the market has reinvented itself
even though it may be a bit more expensive than other markets
The last renovation in 2017 brought a playground for kids in an area that used to be occupied by stalls
the longer opening hours on Saturdays led to more people coming in to shop
But the pandemic put an end to all of that
Chef Vitor Sobral opened one of his chain bakeries
they sell cakes such as bolo de arroz (rice cakes)
brioche and croissants alongside other bakeries that have been around for longer
which is famous for its traditional loaves from Mafra and Alentejo
But they seem to coexist peacefully – for the Portuguese
there is no such thing as too many bakeries or pastelarias (pastry shops)
Ilda Costa Pinto and husband, Domingos, have been running their bacalhau stall at the market for 34 years. They are a reliable and trustworthy source for good salt cod (so much so that Anthony Bourdain paid them a visit back in 2012). She tells us that the stall has its busiest period around Christmas time
but that they’ll continue to work through the new lockdown
delivering salt cold from Norway and Iceland as well as frozen fish and a variety of cod specialties (mainly cheeks and tongues)
accessories and clothes are also part of the market
But there used to be so many more shops selling things other than food
back when the market was the neighborhood’s beating heart
who has been selling fish for 35 years in Mercado de Alvalade
“When I started working here we had so many more clients and there were many other shops
but we noticed the decline really some 25 years ago
when a lot of people stopped coming because of the supermarkets,” she tells us
some come with their children and that is great to watch.”
is quite impressive both in size and in the amount of fresh fish available
“I wake up very early to go to MARL and get the best from all the fish auctions in the country
People know me because of quality,” she says
and during the current lockdown she will keep delivering fish to clients
“Even the market is much better in the infrastructure
the original stalls were not so great,” she says
during which she barely had a moment to breath
I have seven people working with me and I will keep doing this as long as I can,” Teresa adds
a staff member from the market’s long-standing restaurant
also named Mercado de Alvalade and positioned close to Teresa’s stall
This is the advantage of market life: If you’re not happy with the fish on the menu
you can get up and select something different from Teresa’s stall and it will be on your table some half an hour later
This was of course before the lockdown that started on January 15 – now we need to wait some time before we can sit at a restaurant table again
Editor’s note: To further explore how the pandemic has affected the areas featured in our 2020 “Neighborhoods to Visit” guide and what recovery may look like
we will be publishing dispatches from restaurants
markets and food shops in these districts all week long

IT'S the site of Celtic's most famous triumph - with thousands of Hoops fans still visiting Lisbon each year for their very own Portuguese pilgrimage
But the contours of the famous Estadio Nacional where Billy McNeill once held the European Cup aloft are set to change - to the tune of a cool €25MILLION Euros modernisation
is that the 81-year-old stadium won't be getting bulldozed and rebuilt and will rather undergo a ‘sensitive and innovative redesign’
Led by Jock Stein and legendary skipper Billy McNeill
the Lisbon Lions triumphed over Italian giants Inter Milan in the Portuguese capital to become the first side from the Britain to win the biggest prize in club football
Goals from the great Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers saw the Hoops come from behind to win 2-1
The stadium where the match took place is a listed heritage site which was originally built six miles west of the city between 1939 and 1944 to designs by Portuguese architect Jacobetty Rosa
Located in close proximity to two massive stadia neighbours in the form of the Estadio da Luz and Jose Alvalade - the homes of Benfica and Sporting Lisbon respectively - the Estadio Nacional isn't used so regularly these days
It still plays host to the Portuguese cup final - as well as rugby games
But refurbishment has been on the way since at least 2012 and while there is no start date for the work as yet, it's closer than ever with AFL Architects winning the job for their designs.
AFL are working with Lisbon-based Aires Mateus and Gonçalves Vieira Cruz after they won a competition with their designs - with the Portuguese Football Federation the client.
This will use a Pratt truss structure supported by four strategically braced points
actually coming down from 39,000 to 36,388
The architects claim that the stadium’s ‘unique integration into the natural landscape’ of Vale do Jamor will be retained
Key features of the proposed refurbishment include:
the Lisbon Lions were named the best club side EVER
It topped a poll ahead of a Barca side led by Pep Guardiola and spearheaded by the likes of Lionel Messi
who won La Liga with 96 points and secured the Champions League
Manchester United's famous 1998/99 side came a distant third with 14 per-cent of the vote

2024 Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim REUTERS/Rodrigo Antunes/File Photo
LISBON (Reuters) - Ruben Amorim had already decided this would be his last season at Sporting
and wanted to remain at the club until the end of the campaign before joining Manchester United
Amorim was announced as United's manager to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag on Friday
and will join the Premier League club on Nov
it was my last season at Sporting," Amorim told reporters after his side's 5-1 win over Estrela da Amadora
"The season started and we started to have a very good season
above the clause and the president defended their interests
I never discussed anything with the president
"The only request I made was that it be at the end of the season and they told me that it was not possible
Sporting had confirmed on Tuesday that United had expressed interest in Amorim and were willing to pay his release clause
and the coach had little time to make his decision
"I had three days to decide on something that completely changes my life," Amorim said
"It's not the first time I've had my clause paid by another club
"I said that I would stay as many games as necessary
I didn't say anything earlier because I couldn't
"And I knew that in six months I would know that I was not going to be at Sporting."
Sporting won their League Cup game against Nacional on Tuesday
after news of United's interest in Amorim broke
and the manager said it had affected his players
Amorim is ready to continue doing his best for Sporting in the two games he has left at the club
against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday
I don't let the players down," Amorim said
"Against Nacional I felt them more anxious because I felt that they didn't know what to expect
with Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres scoring four goals
maintains Sporting's perfect start to the season after 10 league games
but Amorim says Gyokeres will not be a target for him when he joins United
"Gyokeres costs 100 million and it's very difficult
I'm not going to pick up any Sporting player in January
Everyone at Sporting knows the importance he had for me
I understand the disappointment of the fans and that leaving in the middle of a season that can be historic
we still have two important games against City and Braga

The clock strikes 11:55 a.m., and the tables at Adega Solar Minhoto are already filling up with hungry customers. Many are regulars who come daily – they know that this traditional restaurant in the Alvalade neighborhood doesn’t accept bookings and is packed by midday
requiring a bit of a sprint if you don’t want to wait in line
Most workers in Lisbon take their midday meal after 1 p.m.
But Adega Solar Minhoto’s fresh and delicious traditional fare
friendly service and great value are worth rearranging your schedule for
Adega Solar Minhoto was already an established neighborhood tasca when Joaquim Sá and his friend and business partner Reinaldo Pinto bought it 20 years ago
the duo had worked together for 10 years at Tico Tico
a place where people like to indulge in seafood and beer
but also steaks and in this case regional northern cuisine
They kept the name as well as the traditional style of cooking
albeit with a few updates and improvements to the menu
It was only last year that they gave the space a makeover
updating the décor so that it looks more like a restaurant than a tasca: The many TV sets are still there but there are fewer stainless steel counters and cabinets and more wooden panels and bricks as well as comfortable chairs
large windows and walls free of football club banners
the dining room was expanded and a larger terrace (covered in winter) was added
allowing even more people to find a seat and enjoy this northern Portugal outpost in Lisbon
sometimes when you’re still savoring the beef croquette or the cod or octopus fritter that come as part of the cover – we also found ourselves devouring the sheep’s cheese from Alentejo and dipping into the bread basket
which rounded out these irresistible appetizers
were opened by immigrants from the Minho region
“We have regular customers that have known us for a long time
some live here or work in Alvalade but some come from far away to eat with us.”
Joaquim tells us that before they took over the restaurant
it was already a well-established business
having made the people of Alvalade happy for at least 30 years
its out-of-the-way location doesn’t deter their clientele
some live here or work in Alvalade but some come from far away to eat with us,” he says
like bacalhau com broa (salt cod with corn bread) on Mondays
And many more special dishes that can show up on any given day
such as perna de porco no forno (roast pork leg with potatoes)
favas guisadas (fava bean stew with chouriço)
galinha de campo de cabidela (free range chicken with rice stewed in blood)
The grilled fish is also very popular at Adega Solar Minhoto – it’s especially fresh since the Alvalade Market is so close by
It’s a simple but popular dish all over Portugal
a kind of fast food that is easy to get and affordable – usually a thin and small steak with a garlicky sauce
Most places load up on the carb side dishes
Very often everything comes on the same plate
the fries drowned in a pool of greasy and tasteless sauce
But not here: A generous portion of steak comes on one dish
which is garlicky and meaty with a hint of bay leaf
“We want to serve a high-quality bitoque with a good steak
And of course the sauce is excellent too.”
when many popular lunch spots are quieter and operate at a more relaxed pace
it’s business as usual at Adega Solar Minhoto
dreaming of the meal to come with an imperial draft beer in hand
Soccer Football - Champions League - Sporting CP v Manchester City - Estadio Jose Alvalade
2024 Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres REUTERS/Pedro Nunes
LISBON (Reuters) - Sporting marked the final home game of coach Ruben Amorim's reign in stunning fashion as Viktor Gyokeres' hat-trick saw them come from behind to thrash Manchester City 4-1 and maintain their superb start to the Champions League on Tuesday
The Portuguese league leaders were outplayed for most of the first half and should have trailed by more than Phil Foden's early goal
but Gyokeres levelled it up before the break
City were caught cold at the start of the second period as Maximiliano Araujo finished a flowing move straight from the kickoff
before Gyokeres put Sporting further ahead minutes later from the penalty spot
Erling Haaland had the chance to drag City back into the game but struck the crossbar with a penalty before Gyokeres wrapped it up for the hosts with another spot kick to send the Estadio Jose Alvalade crowd into raptures
who will take over as Manchester United manager on Nov

Sporting overcame their recent psychological block against their fiercest rivals (10 successive winless games against Porto and Benfica) to earn a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory against the Dragons in Lisbon this evening
Viktor Gyökeres scored a brilliant individual goal early on and the Swede was also instrumental in the second goal
laying on a perfect assist for Pedro Gonçalves on the hour mark
In between Porto captain Pepe was sent off.
Before kick-off there had been doubts about the fitness of Pepe
but the centre-back was apt to take his place in the line-up
missed out having picked up an injury in the final training session before the match
Young central defender Eduardo Quaresma was drafted in as a surprise inclusion by coach Rúben Amorim
The hosts enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening minutes and got an early breakthrough thanks to star man Viktor Gyökeres
The Swede picked up the ball wide on the left flank with seemingly nothing on and Pepe in close attendance
Gyökeres cut inside the Portugal central defender and fired a low shot into Diogo Costa’s net at the near post
eliciting an explosion of joy among the home fans
Pepe was having a torrid time trying to control the Sporting No9
picking up a yellow card for pulling him to the ground as the Swede bustled past him again
rising highest to meet a corner but it was straight at Diogo Costa who saved comfortably
Sporting were cutting through Porto’s defence with alarming ease for the Dragons
the visitors escaping further punishment as Marcus Edwards twice made bad decisions with the retreating Porto backline exposed
On Porto’s few incursions into Sporting’s half in the opening half hour Quaresma defended magnificently
putting a series of perfectly timed tackles to thwart the in-form Galeno
in addition to showing excellent composure and accuracy when passing out from the back
After the half-hour mark Porto gradually began to get a foothold in the game
enjoying more of the ball in Sporting’s defensive third
Evanilson tried his luck from distance in the 40th minute but the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar
With half time approaching the crowd erupted into a roar of celebration as Sporting looked to have doubled their lead with a thrilling goal
Eduardo Quaresma embarked on a piece of wing play that his namesake Ricardo would have been proud off
playing a perfectly executed one-two with Morita
speeding down the flank and delivering a pinpoint cross for the diving Gyökeres to head into the net
The joy of the Sporting fans did not last however
as a VAR intervention and check of the pitch-side monitor by the referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the buildup
The deflation in the stadium almost turned to despair as Porto at last created a clear goal-scoring opportunity
goalkeeper Adán producing a superb reaction save with his foot from a close-range Wenderson Galeno header from a wonderful João Mário cross
The second half started with a bang as Pepe’s forgettable night got worse when he lashed out with his arms and caught Matheus Reis
The referee initially took no action but again VAR intervened and after watching the images on the monitor Nuno Almeida produced a red card
Sporting scented blood with Marcus Edwards going on a mazy run and forcing Diogo Costa into a sharp diving save
The second goal duly arrived in the 60th minute
Geny Catamo threaded a delicious through ball into the path of Gyökeres
who raced forward before squaring to the unmarked Pote
who had little difficulty in sweeping the ball past Costa
Sporting two goals up and one man up with half an hour to play
Pedro Gonçalves soon had a golden chance to score a second
with Porto immediately breaking to create a chance for Evanilson
but the Brazilian failed to make a solid connection with his shot and Adán saved his weak effort comfortably
Porto had the ball in Sporting’s net in the 72nd minute
but Taremi had strayed offside before passing to strike partner Evanilson to finish
But Sporting always looked likelier to add to their lead rather than see it reduced
with the out-of-form Pote wasting another glaring opportunity with a poor finish that dribbled wide
In stoppage time the Lions had the ball in the net again
but Paulinho’s shot was ruled out for a foul by Daniel Bragança
The win lifts Sporting back to the top of the table
one point clear of second-placed Benfica and three ahead of Porto
by Tom Kundert at the Estádio José Alvalade

(Corrects date in dateline, no change to story)
MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -Manchester United have named Portuguese Ruben Amorim as head coach to replace Erik ten Hag, the Premier League club said on Friday, hoping one of Europe's brightest young managers can restore them to former glories.
The 39-year-old Amorim will join United on a contract until 2027, with a club option for an additional year, on Nov. 11, once he has fulfilled his obligations to Sporting -- a club he revived during his four-and-a-half years in charge.
"Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football," United said in a statement.
"Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club's first title in 19 years.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins."
The charismatic Amorim, known for his crowd-pleasing style of high pressing and possession-based football, took Sporting to Primeira Liga titles in 2021 and 2024 and they lead the standings again this season.
United, who have been in the doldrums by their standards since the era of manager Alex Ferguson, moved swiftly to secure Amorim after axing Dutchman Ten Hag on Oct. 28 following another woeful start to the season.
Sporting said on Tuesday that United were prepared to pay the 10 million euros ($10.86 million) release clause.
With United languishing 14th in the Premier League, their former player and assistant coach Van Nistelrooy was appointed interim manager, with the Dutchman overseeing a 5-2 League Cup fourth round victory over Leicester City in his first match.
He will in charge for three more games before Amorim's arrival, including Sunday's league match against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Amorim, a former midfielder who played for Portugal, becomes United's sixth permanent manager since their most successful boss Ferguson, who led the club to a record 13 league titles.
The Portuguese coach is tasked with taking United back to their glory days in one of football's most scrutinised jobs.
Amorim had been coveted by other clubs, including Liverpool where he was linked with replacing Juergen Klopp last season before the Merseysiders hired Arne Slot.
He also held talks with West Ham United to replace David Moyes before he opted to remain in Lisbon.
Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich were also linked with Amorim when appointing new managers in the close season.
Amorim had also been tipped as a potential replacement for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires at the end of this season.
He was hailed as a hero for saving Sporting from despair after he was appointed in March 2020, the club's third manager that season.
Amorim had just led Braga to League Cup success after two months in charge, with 10 wins in 13 games, including their first away victory in 65 years over Benfica, where he had spent nine years as a player.
Sporting came calling, signing him for 10 million euros. Amorim instilled the clear identity Sporting were lacking, and they ended their 19-year league title drought in a remarkable 2020-21 season in which they lost once and won the League Cup.
Last season, they lost just two league games and finished 10 points ahead of second-placed Benfica.
Amorim played professionally for 14 years, mainly as a central midfielder, and featured 14 times for Portugal. He made his senior first-team debut for Belenenses in Portugal's first division in 2003 before signing for Benfica in 2008.
He retired in 2017 aged 32 after more than a year without playing having torn knee ligaments, and then had a season on loan at Qatari club Al-Wakrah.
Amorim began enrolling in management courses soon after.
He is no stranger to Old Trafford, having done an internship under then-United manager Jose Mourinho in 2018, and has called the Portuguese coach a "reference point" in his career.
Amorim usually employs a 3-4-3 formation with high pressing and possession football. His laid back demeanour means he is well liked by the media.
He has a fan in United captain and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes who said this month: "Since Mr Amorim arrived at Sporting, it has been one of the teams to play the best football.
"Sporting went 20 years without winning championships and Amorim arrived and has already won two, this shows that the work has been done well."

The Alvalade neighborhood was considered one of the 40 coolest neighborhoods in the world
But this neighborhood isn’t all about “cházinhos”
In addition to the classics on Avenida da Igreja
restaurants and galleries opening almost “every day” that you can’t miss
We can start with Lisbon’s most vintage ice cream parlor
which has been delighting sweet tooths since 1948
During the summer it’s normal to queue at the door
but it’s worth every minute to devour the house specialty
And you should take advantage of the fact that it’s only open during the summer
but now we’re moving 70 years forward
but it has caught on and you can watch the incredible preparation on a cold plate and choose flavors such as pastel de nata or bola de Berlim
If you can’t do without “in-house production” you have to go to Carcassone
it’s already an institution (since 1948) but if you want to get straight to the sweet stuff
Leonidas is a must for heaven in your mouth

The new (9th) phase of drilling will initially test targets over 11-kilometer strike length between the historic Lousal and Caveira Mines;
First hole is testing potential northwest extension of Lousal Mine orebody;
Other holes will test targets at Monte da Bela Vista and the Caveira Mine area
and then several in-between VTEM geophysical anomalies
the program will return to Central and Southern sectors at Sesmarias
The new phase of drilling (9th overall) will initially target anomalies located between the historic Lousal and Caveira Mines
over a strike length of approximately 11 kilometers
The first drill hole targets potential mineralization located 300-400 meters northwest of the last reported mineralization in the Lousal Mine
we anticipate further testing in the Lousal area
as well as targets at the Monte da Bela Vista prospect drilled by Avrupa in 2012-2014
and several strong VTEM geophysical anomalies located between Monte da Bela Vista and the south end of the Caveira Mine mineralized zones
Once the drill rig is available for return to Sesmarias
we plan further exploratory drilling within the Central and Southern sectors of the known mineralization
wide-spaced drilling by Avrupa demonstrated the presence of robust massive sulfide mineralization over a further strike length of +1,200 meters through the central and southern sectors at Sesmarias
Figure 1
Map of Alvalade Experimental Exploitation License showing general locations of drill target areas which have been selected using a wide range of geological
dashed lines that traverse the length of the license outline the corridor of favorable geology
Note also significant interference from railroad tracks
and a solar farm in the Azinheira area (all in washed-out purple color)
Figure 2
Location of Sesmarias massive sulfide mineralization
showing both recent and historic drilling on the project
Present joint venture drilled only about 400 meters of strike length
wide-spaced drilling outlined a further +1,200 meters to the south of recent JV work
Mineralization is potentially open to the south
Avrupa expects to drill a further 6,000 meters in 10 to 12 drill holes in the current phase of drilling
MATSA has indicated that the budget for Phase 9 is in the range of 1.4 to 1.7 million euros
The budget will also include further re-processing of the VTEM data and an airborne gravity survey to cover the entire license
using modern techniques and detailed location and elevation information to replace a patchwork of historic gravity surveys from the 1990’s
gravity surveys are effective tools for locating non-visible
buried massive sulfide bodies in the Iberian Pyrite Belt
The re-processing of the VTEM data is presently underway
and we expect to perform the gravity survey around mid - Q4 2022
“We are excited to get the drilling going again
The JV geology team has constructed a set of hard targets along an 11-kilometer strike length between the Lousal and Caveira Mines
While we have concentrated our efforts at Sesmarias for good reason
and will get back to drilling the Sesmarias copper-zinc prospect
we are also quite excited to test the other VMS targets that we have developed over the past two years.”
360 meters northwest of last reported mineralization at the historic Lousal Mine
(Sandfire MATSA) is a modern mining company which owns and operates the MATSA Mining Operations in the Huelva province of Spain
With a processing plant located to the north of the Iberian Pyrite Belt that sources ore from three underground mines

zinc and lead mineral concentrates that are sold from the port of Huelva
Sandfire MATSA also holds 1,312 km2 of exploration permits in the south of Spain and 1,106 km2 in Portugal
Sandfire MATSA is a wholly owned company of Sandfire Resources Ltd
a mining and exploration company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX: SFR)
is a growth-oriented junior exploration and development company directed to discovery of mineral deposits
using a hybrid prospect generator business model
The Company holds one 100%-owned license in Portugal
presently optioned to Sandfire MATSA in an earn-in joint venture agreement
The Company now holds one 100%-owned exploration license covering the Slivova gold prospect in Kosovo
and is actively advancing four prospects in central Finland through the recently-announced acquisition of Akkerman Finland Oy

In a similar match to the previous two encounters between these two Portuguese heavyweights this season
Porto’s superior finishing proved the difference as the northerners beat Sporting 2-1 at the José Alvalade stadium
goals from Matheus Uribe and Pepê gave Porto the points
with Chermiti’s late strike proving only a consolation for Sporting
Sporting coach Rúben Amorim raised plenty of eyebrows with his starting lineup with a new set of wingbacks
While the introduction of Héctor Bellerín on the right was not a surprise
with Abdul Fatawu selected and Nuno Santos on the bench
Chermiti kept his place in the starting line-up
André Franco and Marko Grujic got the nod given injuries to Otávio and Stephen Eustáquio
although the latter was fit enough to take his place on the bench
Sporting created the first big chance midway through the first half
Coates sets up the attack with a volleyed pass to Fatawu on the left flank
the Brazilian producing a pinpoint flat cross to pick out Marcus Edwards near the penalty spot
The Englishman shot first time but his effort skimmed wide
Play immediately switched to the other end
The to-and-fro continued as straight away another well-worked move by Sporting led to another clear chance
this time falling to Trincão but his shot lacked the power to trouble Diogo Costa
Zaidu and Edwards then traded speculative efforts from distance
In the 35th minute Porto came within a whisker of taking the lead twice in quick succession
touching the ball past Adán but it hit the post
with Marcano heading the rebound wide of a gaping goal
There was an unusually early substitution for Sporting with Paulinho coming on to replace the again ineffectual Trincão
The fact the home supporters roared their approval tells you everything you need to know about Trincão’s standing at Alvalade
The lively Pepê tested Adán when he ran across the pitch and hit a firm shot from 25 yards out but Adán dived to clasp the ball
With the interval approaching Sporting fabricated another fantastic chance
Pote’s diagonal ball was cleverly dummied by Chermiti to play in Bellerín
the debutant cutting the ball back perfectly for Chermiti
whose goal-bound shot was intercepted by a desperate Marcano block
winning a free kick in a dangerous position
Edwards stepped up and lifted the ball over the wall and dipping towards the top corner
forcing Costa to produce a brilliant flying save to tip the ball over the bar
There was still time before the break for Taremi to launch himself at João Mário’s cross
In a pleasant change from the fiery recent matches between these two sides
both teams were intent on sticking to football
and the only thing missing from an excellent first 45 minutes were goals
The second half was not so copious in terms of chances
the first just after the hour mark as Porto broke the deadlock
Matheus Uribe tried to thread the ball through to a team-mate in the area
but when the ball ricocheted off a couple of defenders
the Colombian suddenly found himself one-on-one facing Adán
Porto looked largely in control and set on seeing out a 1-0 win as Sporting
but the match had a dramatic sting in its tail
On 87 minutes a Marcus Edwards long cross was met by Chermiti but Diogo Costa was there to deny the youngster
But just two minutes later the home supporter erupted in joy as Chermiti did find the back of the net
banging in a rebound after Diogo Costa had made a brilliant save from an Arthur Gomes shot from the edge of the box
the celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled out the goal for offside
trying an acrobatic effort but failing to make a proper connection
Moments later Porto apparently made the points safe
Toní Martínez flicked on the ball in midfield
Pepê raced past Coates like he wasn’t there and had no problem beating Adán
the talented Braziian defly lifting the ball over Adán
The Porto fans behind the goal were in ecstasy
having gone from hell to heaven in a couple of minutes
But Sporting and Chermiti finally got on the score-sheet
the striker meeting a sumptuous cross by Arthur Gomes with a thunderous header into the net
There was still time for Sporting to carve out one final chance with goalkeeper Adán going up for a corner and getting his head to the cross
but ball drifted wide and the referee blew the final whistle

Sporting and FC Porto failed to go beyond a 0-0 draw in their first meeting of the 2018/19 season
as the Lions welcomed the league leaders for a rare afternoon kick-off at the Alvalade
A very tight first-half with minimal chances set the tone for a disciplined outing from the two rivals
with the likes of Moussa Marega and Nemanja Gudelj coming close to shaking things up in the second half
bringing to an end the Dragon's run of 18 consecutive victories and keeping Sporting eight points away from top spot at the halfway mark of the Primeira Liga season
Ahead of his first ‘Clássico’ as Sporting manager
Marcel Keizer welcomed Bas Dost back into the starting line-up
with Jefferson also coming into the fold to deputise for the suspended Marcos Acuña
Pepe’s anticipated comeback was left on ice in favour of Felipe’s return
partnering Éder Militão at the heart of defence
A very tight affair saw both sides cancel each other out for much of the first period
as Porto looked towards Marega to cause the danger from the right in the 28th minute prior to Gudelj's last-ditch intervention
cutting out the Malian's quizzing low cross
Felipe was doing his bit to thwart the hosts
as Sporting also attacked through the right flank via Bruno Gaspar before his cross
was met by Nani's volley and cleared by the Porto defence
Sérgio Conceição was forced to look for solutions off the bench following Maxi Pereira's injury on the brink of half-time
prompting the introduction of Óliver Torres and Porto's switch to a 4-3-3
Sporting's Bruno Gaspar barely made it out in the second period
as the ex-Vitória de Guimarães man made way for Stefan Ristovski through injury after just two minutes for the hosts
[To watch match highlights click on the screen below]
The first big chance of the game fell Porto's way in the 56th minute
following Jesús Corona's dinked cross into the box
but Tiquinho Soares got the execution all wrong on the volley to facilitate Renan Ribeiro's job between the sticks
Marega provided a different kind of threat on the hour-mark
picking up the scraps from a left-sided cross before attempting to bend in a shot on his weaker foot
floating over the crossbar with some caution
The Lions replied almost immediately with a testing strike from range by Bruno Fernandes
as Iker Casillas parried away the bouncing effort
Nani got the better of Corona in the 69th minute to aim a cross at Dost
requiring a brave intervention from Militão to divert the flight of the ball
as it roamed somewhat dangerously out for a corner
Sporting placed their bets once more on shooting from range in the 76th minute
with Gudelj demonstrating his long-range abilities prior to a top save from Casillas to tip the Serbian's effort over the bar
Ristovski was on hand to set Dost soon after with a cross a tad too high for the Dutchman
leaving the former Wolfsburg man powerless to head high and wide from the back-post
Full-time came without a goal for either side, leaving Sporting 4th and eight points behind league-leaders Porto, who saw the gap at the top cut short to five points following Benfica's 2-0 win over Santa Clara on Friday night
Sporting: Renan Ribeiro - Bruno Gaspar (Stefan Ristovski
Bruno Fernandes - Abdoulay Diaby (Raphinha
FC Porto: Iker Casillas - Maxi Pereira (Óliver Torres
