It is a rerun of one of the most unlikely Portuguese Cup finals ever played
PortuGOAL’s resident football historian Miguel Lourenço Pereira takes us on another trip down memory lane
A second-tier side against a team that had just landed in the top tier
It was the most unexpected Portuguese Cup final you could imagine
and you got two for the price of one!
A Bola cover the day after the first match that ended Estrela 1-1 Farense after extra time
In 1989/90 Portuguese football went nuts as the Big Three and the usual contenders to win the Cup were sent home one by one
the Jamor stadium became the stage for a showdown between newcomers Estrela da Amadora and the Algarve’s most successful side
A tie so tight that it needed a replay to separate the teams
A feast for those who particularly enjoy placing themselves against all that modern football stands for.
When Tirsense travelled to das Antas to put Porto to the sword
the last representative of the Big Three was dumped out of the Cup final
but more so as it was only the round of sixteen of the competition
Both Benfica and Sporting had already been knocked out of the tournament in the previous rounds
Vitória SC and Belenenses were seen as the clear favourites
having recently played the final – and in the case of the Restelo boys
won it – but they too were beaten in the semis by two football clubs who had little to no history to show for in Portuguese football up to that moment
the duel between Beira-Mar and Campomaiorense would probably be cited by Portuguese football fans as more of an underdog final
none of them were playing on the second tier at the time
Estrela had only recently been promoted for the first time ever to the top flight
Imagine something like a Casa Pia versus Penafiel today and you’ll somehow get the picture of what happened once the semi-finals were done and the football nation braced itself for an unexpected showpiece.
it was a festive atmosphere at Jamor for the traditional season-ending showpiece occasion - twice!
A terror for journalists who didn’t know how to pitch it to bigger audiences and for the organisation who panicked at the prospect of having empty seats at the Jamor stadium for the last big game of the season
especially because it was being broadcast as well by state TV channel
Estrela were seen as favourites but only because they played first-division football at the time. They had ousted Vitória in a tense semi-final and had a team full of seasoned players such as Duílio
Rebelo and upcoming future internationals like Paulo Bento
and yet the side led by João Alves finished only 13th in the league table
a meagre seven points above the drop zone and almost twenty shy of Vitória
Not only had their historical local rival from the Algarve Portimonense just been relegated to the second tier
but they also got themselves promoted as the league was increased to 20 teams during that summer
the former Barcelona player turned manager
after having spent the final years of his footballing career in southern Portugal
would become an iconic figure for the club and a heartwarming manager if ever there was one in his day
The team comprised low-profile players and a big Brazilian contingent with the likes of Pitico
Mané and Ricardo helping the club reach both the Primeira Liga and the Cup final in the same season
They would later be famed for incorporating several players from Morocco and eastern Europe but only the Yugoslavian goalkeeper Zoran Lemajic was in the side during the 1989/90 season
Nobody knew then but this was going to be a two-part drama
Jamor filled up with supporters from both sides
thousands came to celebrate a historic feat of Portuguese football with the fact Amadora was right next door to Oeiras certainly helping as well
Alves had most of his key players available and sent a side in full force with Melo in goal
For Farense Forte’s favourite starting eleven also was selected for the match
with the Yugoslavian keeper playing alongside Eugénio
Neither side were glamorous or had high-profile players but what they lacked in flair they made up for in commitment by the bucketload
the match became a contest of which side could hold their nerve better and without many goal-scoring chances
the game unsurprisingly moved to extra-time
Estrela scored the opener through substitute Nélson Borges
A low shot from outside of the box whistled past Lemajic’s stretched arms and nestled in the net
There was still almost half an hour of football to play but many believed the task was done
Farense became known during the 1990s for their fighting spirit and that was already well perceived during the Cup run of that season
a cross into the box was met with confusion by players from all sides until Cruz
found a way to shoot exactly to the same spot that Borges had sent his shot
Melo was unable to block the ball and the game was tied
There were only three minutes left on the clock
both sides knew that an extra match was due to be played in the coming days and they went at each other’s throats for the dying seconds but to no avail
The Portuguese Federation now had an issue in its hands
The game needed to be scheduled within the same week
but many supporters from both sides couldn’t afford another trip or even the ticket for the rematch so the atmosphere around the replay was startlingly different to the first match
A Bola gave a gushing individual player rating to Paulo Bento
“In our opinion the major player of the final
was always the first to push his team on the attack
was always the first to help out defending when Farense countered
Owing to his influence he had a man-marker on him all game but the young player always had the knowhow and ability to free himself from his adversaries
A great triumph for a player with a promising future.”
Estrela appeared to be more in control than they had ever been during the previous matchday
and Paulo Bento opened the scoring within the half-hour
The future Portugal international and national team manager
despite being just 20 years old at the time
was a key player in that Estrela midfield machine and was later yellow-carded for a foul typical of his rugged style of play
It was in the 62nd minute and as the match restarted
Estrela immediately won the ball back and Ricardo Lopes netted the second goal of the afternoon
This time there would be no comeback for Fortes’ men
the Tricolour side from Amadora never lost control of the action and as the final whistle was heard at the Jamor
supporters and players celebrated in ecstasy
Estrela were nothing but a suburban Lisbon club with no history or capacity to compete against the bigger sides
both from white Portuguese who lived in what were the nation’s colonies back in the day – the so-called retornados – but also from black African communities coming from Mozambique
Cape Verde and Guinea had transformed the town completely
boosting it with new life and a reinvigorated attitude
That eventually transpired into the local football club and the Reboleira ground became alive with this injection of ambition and fearless attitude that allowed Estrela to climb the ranks all the way up to the First Division
Winning the Cup was unexpected but also the reward for this newfound community and the club would be taking part in the following season’s Cup Winners Cup
and despite being declared bankrupt in the new millennium they recently resurfaced under a new banner and have established themselves once again at the top table
who also suffered almost two decades of ignominy but since have once again tasted the flavour of the country’s football elite
The two matches characterised the spirit and ethos of both clubs and how Portuguese football was still
something that seems that have been lost recently
3 June 1990 will forever be the day when the underdogs definitively prevailed

The initial one-year loan deal -- which will run through to June 2025 -- was announced on Wednesday and will primarily see Asis feature for both Estrela's B and Under-23 sides
although it was said that he would be closely monitored by the senior team
The 20-year-old came through the ranks of the Sailors after joining their academy in 2020 and has since made five Singapore Premier League appearances
while regularly featuring in the match-day squad of a star-studded team that were champions back in 2021
Asis will be exposed to a creditable level of football even if he does not immediately break into Estrela's first team
with the reserves playing fourth-tier football while the U-23s were champions of the top-level national youth league in the 2022-23 season
It was the Sailors who sent him on a series of trials in Portugal at the end of last year
which eventually led to negotiations with Estrela after he was said to have caught the eye of several local scouts
"That is what I've been aiming for since I started kicking a ball
and it still feels surreal to be at a top Portuguese club," said Asis
"I'm really grateful to everyone who made this move possible
especially my coaches at the Sailors academy
They've made me a better player and are the reason I'm able to make this next step in my career
"I'm really excited to wear the Estrela shirt and can't wait to get started with the team."
With just five Singapore Premier League appearances under his belt
Nur Muhammad Asis' raw potential has seen him earn a move to Europe after joining Portugal's Estrela da Amadora on a one-year loan deal. Lion City Sailors FCSailors technical director Luka Lalić
who first crossed paths with Asis when he coached the latter as a seven-year-old
has backed his protégé to make an impact in Europe
Even when he was just seven or eight years old
he would often talk about his dream of playing in Europe one day," Lalić recalled
including the passing of his father earlier this year
he's now ready to showcase his talents on a larger stage
He just needs the right environment to advance his development
and Estrela is certainly an excellent place for that."
"Winning the Liga Revelação U-23 last year is a testament to the strength of our youth development programme
which is dedicated to investing in young international talents like Asis," said Estrela sporting director José Faria
"I'm extremely confident that Estrela provides the most conducive environment for a young talent from Singapore to succeed
and we look forward to contributing to his development here
"Asis has huge potential to achieve big things in football
so we're happy to have him with us and we want him to work as hard as he can over here."
While Asis is yet to win his first senior cap for Singapore
he has featured at the highest age-group level having been part of the side that competed in the qualifiers for the most recent edition of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup

At the age of 38, Nani decided to end his football career. The announcement came as a surprise due to its timing, as the Portuguese international had returned to Portugal at the start of this season to play for Estrela da Amadora
with whom he had a contract with until June 2025
He played 10 games and scored one goal for them this season. His last official game, curiously, turned out to be full of symbolism: he played 38 minutes in Alvalade against Sporting
the club where his career began in the youth team
Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha became known in the football world as Nani
he started kicking the ball around at Real SC
His first-team debut came in 2005 under Jose Peseiro, who started him in the 72nd minute of a Champions League qualifying match against Udinese
A fast winger, he stood out in Alvalade, where he began to draw comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo. The similarities became more evident when, in 2007, CR7 followed him to Old Trafford and signed for Manchester United
Nani's stats in recent seasonsFlashscoreUnder Sir Alex Ferguson
he became one of the most disconcerting wingers
capable of taking on opponents with feints and celebrating deadly goals with his trademark flip which delighted the fans in the stands
A Portuguese international on 112 occasions
he was one of the key players in the European Championship win in 2016
He also took part in the 2008 and 2012 Euros

Gyökeres hits four as Sporting beat Estrela da Amadora 5-1 to make it a perfect ten; Amorim explains his departure to Manchester United | OneFootballPortuGOAL
Despite the most disruptive of weeks possible
and despite a spirited display by struggling Estrela da Amadora
Sporting continued their flawless start to the defence of the Portuguese Liga title with a 5-1 thrashing of their Lisbon neighbours tonight
Viktor Gyökeres continued his astonishing form
scoring four times to make it 20 goals in 16 games for the Lions this season
Maxi Araújo put the icing on the cake with his first goal for the club
Although well beaten, Estrela made a game of it, especially in the first half when Rodrigo Pinho reduced the deficit to 2-1 and only a series of sharp saves by Sporting goalkeeper Franco Israel and a VAR decision prevented the visitors from scoring more. Tom Kundert reports from Alvalade
A strong contingent of foreign journalists made their way to Lisbon tonight with little interest in the match
the football world still digesting the fact that a 39-year-old Portuguese coach whose work is relatively unknown beyond the borders of his home country has been handed the reins at one of the biggest football clubs in the world
officially confirmed as Manchester United’s new manager earlier today
had said he would explain everything in the post-match press conference
and he was at his communicative best in doing so
So let us start with the main quotes from Amorim after the match tonight
(Apologies for spelling/grammatical mistakes – more than usual – but I was translating simultaneously)
Given what had happened during the week, it would perhaps be asking too much for the team to be unaffected by the hullaballoo surrounding Amorim’s switch to Manchester United
Little surprise therefore that Sporting seemed off it in a disjointed first-half display
where a surprisingly ambitious Estrela caused the Lions plenty of problems
Nilton Varela especially was giving Geovany Quenda a tough time with his speed and trickery on the left wing
one run and cross necessitating Gonçalo Inácio to make a vital interception to deny Bucca
Inácio then appeared at the other end of the pitch
coming close with a header into the side-netting
Nothing appears to affect the performance level of Viktor Gyökeres though
The Swede broke the deadlock in the 19th minute
taking advantage of an attempt by Ferro to cut out a ball that turned into a perfect assist
Thank you very much said the Sporting No9 as he smashed the ball past Bruno Brígido into the net from a tight angle
Estrela continued to push plenty of men forward
and were desperately close to equalising in the 26th minute
Franco Israel pulled off a fantastic save from Bucca’s powerful shot
but he only succeeded in blasting over a gaping goal
The miss was soon punished as Dramé carelessly lost the ball in a dangerous position
Trincão immediately feeding Gyökeres who produced a rocket finish into the top corner
Estrela reduced the deficit almost straight away
Rodrigo Pinho heading in from close range after Israel had pulled off a miraculous stop to save the striker’s initial effort
Sporting went straight back onto the attack
Pedro Gonçalves forcing Brigído into a stunning reflex save after more brilliant work by Gyökeres
But the Lions soon restored their two-goal lead
Leonel Bucca handled the ball on the line to prevent Trincão’s header from going in and Sporting were awarded a penalty
Bucca was initially sent off but his punishment was reduced to a yellow card upon a VAR review
As Gyökeres stepped up to take the penalty
you felt it was impossible for him to miss… and he duly rifled the ball into the net with aplomb
There was still time for Bucca to have another presentable chance
Soon after the interval Estrela veteran Nani
one of the most popular players to play for Sporting this century
the former Portugal international getting an ovation from all four corners of the ground
which he acknowledged by clapping his hands above his head in appreciation
Throughout the night Estrela created more problems for Sporting than any other team had done this season in the Primeira Liga
and Pinho had the ball in the net on the hour mark
only for the goal to be chalked off by VAR as the striker was adjudged to have used his hand to control the ball
The moment of the night came in the 70th minute as Viktor Gyökeres scored his fourth of the night to cap a superb team move
and Amorim making several substitutions no doubt thinking about Tuesday’s encounter against Manchester City
there was still time for a significant goal
Maxi Araújo finding the net for the first time since joining Sporting with a firm cross-shot after being found by Daniel Bragança’s fine cross-field pass
The way the whole team congregated to effusively congratulate the Uruguayan suggests he has quickly become a popular member of the squad and the goal will surely boost the confidence of a player who has not lived up to expectations as of yet
tonight’s victory the 14th in 15 unbeaten games in all competitions following the Super Cup defeat
But with Manchester City in the Champions League and Braga away coming up next
and above all with the club preparing for life after Amorim thereafter
the next few weeks will likely give us clear indications as to whether Sporting fans can look forward to a historically successful season or not

Nani is back in Portugal after signing a one year contract with Estrela da Amadora
was without a club after leaving Turkish club Adana Demirspor in May
The winger has had an incredible career that has seen him represent Sporting Clube de Portugal
The former Portuguese international scored 24 goals in 112 caps for his nation and was a key player in the Seleção as they won the 2016 European Championship
frequently starting up front alongside Cristiano Ronaldo
Estrela confirmed the signing in a statement
saying: "The player returns to play in the Portuguese League
A city that is particularly special to him
where he grew up and began his adventure in the world of football."
In July Nani announced that he was one of the investors in fourth division club Sintrense
during which he revealed that he had ambitions to continue his career
My peak has already passed and it was beautiful
I look for opportunities that are good and that I can continue to enjoy football
It is a passion that is difficult to give up when you still feel strong and energetic
I know that I am still capable of making the fans vibrate with moments on the pitch
I still want to enjoy football and I am open to playing for a few more years."
Estrela da Amadora have been busy in the transfer window as they look to consolidate their position in the Primeira Liga
The club have also brought Alan Ruiz back to Portugal who
will hope to ignite an attack that scored just 33 goals in 34 Primeira Liga matches last season

Braga’s Primeira Liga campaign began with a bang
manager Daniel Sousa sacked immediately after a 1-1 draw against Estrela da Amadora at the Quarry
The visitors squandered two presentable opportunities to score in the first half
Rodrigo Pinho unable to pick out Kikas and André Luiz shooting straight at Matheus
João Moutinho starting the move that ended with Rodrigo Zalazar’s cross converted by Amine El Ouazzani
offside in assisting Nani but soon making amends when he headed Nilton Varela’s cross past a stranded Matheus
Neither side could break the deadlock during nine minutes of added time
Filipe Martins satisfied with a point as he continues to sort out his squad
Portugoal's Matthew Marshall reports from Estádio Municipal de Braga
Estrela da Amadora began brightly in Braga
Miguel Lopes sending Rodrigo Pinho clear down the right wing but his pass too strong for an unmarked Kikas who was wide open
André Luiz fired straight at Matheus before Braga began to get further forward
the Warriors not able to make anything stick in attack
Estrela squandered a fantastic opportunity to go in front in the 20th minute
Leonel Bucca got past two players and released Luiz
the winger holding off Adrián Marín but shooting straight at Matheus once again with the keeper to beat
Daniel Sousa’s side regained control before the break
their best chances coming through Roger Fernandes and Joe Mendes who couldn't test Bruno Brígido
Braga bounced out of the dressing rooms and broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute
It started with a challenge by João Moutinho with the ball staying in play for Zalazar
his powerful cross perfectly placed for Amine El Ouazzani who couldn’t miss
Vitor Carvalho headed Moutinho’s corner wide and Roger’s shot was saved after Marín had surged into the box
Filipe Martins introduced Léo Cordeiro and Nani for Manuel Keliano and Gustavo Henrique
Pinho made way for Alan Ruiz in the 72nd minute as the heat got turned up
Luiz went through and wasted another opportunity
Braga going close when Horta volleyed Bruma’s cross wide
Estrela put the ball in the back of the net six minutes later as Kikas latched onto Veiga’s pass
his cross converted by Nani but the goal ruled out due to Kikas straying offside
He wouldn’t have to wait long for another chance
Nilton Varela’s cross to the back post met by Kikas who headed past a stationary Matheus and into the far corner
Marques and Nani were involved in a minor fracas which saw both players booked alongside a protesting Zalazar
The cards kept accumulating for the visitors with Bucca
It was an exciting finale but no team could break the deadlock
Braga unable to capitalize on two well positioned free kicks
Braga were fortunate to go into the break level
another slow start which we saw in the 0-0 draw against Servette
Daniel Sousa brought in Vitor Carvalho for Bruma which allowed Moutinho to get further forward alongside Rodrigo Zalazar
The Warriors turn their attention the tricky trip to Geneva where they will try to stay alive in the Europa League qualifiers

Estrela da Amadora have made some interesting moves in the transfer market with Alan Ruiz and Nani making their debuts off the bench

Braga manager Daniel Sousa was sensationally sacked just minutes after leaving the post match press conference
The club released a statement on their website which read:
"SC Braga informs that Daniel Sousa is no longer the coach of the first team
With him also leave the club his assistants Francisco Matos
SC Braga would like to thank Daniel Sousa and his technical team for their dedication and commitment to the Club in recent months. The name of SC Braga's new coach will be made official in due course."
Sousa was ordinary at Gil Vicente before impressing at Arouca which convinced António Salvador to hire the 39-year-old following the departure of Artur Jorge
The president has wasted no time in pulling the trigger
the ruthlessly effecient sacking coming after just four games under the new boss
It is hard to imagine now how the Portuguese Cup was once a paradise for minnows
Come the late 1980s and across the following decade the competition hosted some of the most remarkable and incredible fairytales in the whole history of the Portuguese game
Few were so dramatic and unexpected as the rise of Estrela da Amadora from unknown neighbourhood club into national royalty
On the weekend Estrela welcome Vitória to the Estádio José Gomes in the Liga Portugal
football historian Miguel Lourenço Pereira looks back at Estrela’s finest hour.
When news came of Tirsense’s surprising win at the Antas stadium on February 27th against favourites FC Porto
nationwide supporters realised something out of the ordinary had just happened
For the first time in many years there was no representation of the so-called Big Three in the Taça de Portugal last eight
It meant eight football clubs unaccustomed to lifting a trophy would find the chance of their lives right at their doorstep
beaten by Vitória FC and Marítimo in the previous rounds
The Dragões defeat made things even more interesting
There was still a third division side in the final run – UD Valonguense – and two from the second division
who were all seen as appetising opponents for the now favourites Vitória FC
Portuguese Cup 1989/90 quarter-finals
Farense
UD Valonguense
Vitória FC
Belenenses
Estrela da Amadora
Tirsense
Vitória SC
Setúbal and Belenenses were pitted against each other and the Belém side came out victors only after a floodlight failure at Bonfim granted them a 0-3 win
after a controversial decision by the Portuguese Federation
suffered more than initially expected to beat Maia
and became front-runners to beat Estrela da Amadora in the semifinals
after Estrela had edged out Porto’s nemesis Tirsense
The Guimarães side had already dispatched Vila Real
Freamunde and Macedo de Cavaleiros and where yet to play a first-division side
In town many dreamed already with a chance of finally clinching a trophy after winning the Supertaça two years previously
It was a side full of well-respected players
from goalkeeper Neno up to the likes of Soeiro
well coached by Brazilian manager Paulo Autuori
who would in the following years become a household name thanks to the exploits of his Marítimo side that eventually led Benfica to hire his services
Pitted against the Minho side was Estrela da Amadora
still living its first years of professional football
It was a world that was very distant to the capital’s glamour lifestyle just a few miles south
while a lot was happening in the streets surrounding Amadora – with the seeds of the hip-hop movement crossing paths with some hard-rock sounds brewing in the Brandoa neighbourhood from where the Moonspell group came from – the football club had managed to transform the Reboleira stadium into a living hell for any visiting side
The following season was less successful – 13th in the final league table – but paved way for a brilliant cup run
The team coached by Boavista and Benfica former international glory João Alves
and forced a play-off only decided on penalties against Sporting Braga
They then beat out Tirsense to claim a place in the semis
For many observers that was as good as it would get
There were plenty of talented names at Alves’ disposal although many were still unknown at the time
Paulo Bento was far from becoming the international footballer of later years but was already bossing around the midfield surrounded by the likes of Basaúla
later the league’s top scorer with Boavista
things started sourly with João Gabriel netting the first after a dubious penalty awarded by Bento Marques
Estrela keep pressing forward and finally got their reward on the brink of half-time with Nigerian forward Ricky scoring the well-deserved equaliser
The match was a tense affair from then onwards
No further goals were scored and a replay at the Dom Afonso Henriques stadium would decide who would accompany surprise-package Farense in the Cup Final
Guimarães woke up a week later in celebratory mood
Many already saw Vitória on their way to Jamor and having to beat second-division Farense seemed a task even easier than to get rid of the recent first-division newcomers from Amadora
Afonso Henriques stadium was full from the earliest hour as many hard-core supporters decided to press the home advantage to the fullest
An early goal by Chiquinho Carlos seemed to be the goal everyone was expecting
coming at the 30th minute pretty much in the run of play
Vitória were flying and perhaps the ectasis of the celebration ended up playing against them
once again showing a never-say-die character
Nerves started to set in around the stands and as the ninety minutes ticked down
the honour of scoring the most important goal in the history of Estrela up to that point
The Congolese midfielder – who alongside N’Dinga was destined for Belgium when Pimenta Machado managed to sign him for his Vitória side
unaware of what fate would bring – would eventually return to Guimarães the following season for a successful five-year spell but many never forgave him having netted the goal that prevented Vitória SC from reaching the final
Only a club like Vitória could lose such an important match at the hands of a player from their own ranks
It would take almost twenty-five years before the Conquistadores finally clinched their sole Taça de Portugal trophy in a final against Benfica in 2013.
Estrela da Amadora win the Portuguese Cup and qualify for Europe after beating Farense in the 1990 final
In Amadora nobody expected the side to progress that far and celebrations went on all night long
Estrela eventually came out winners but only after playing a replay in the final
after drawing against Farense in the first game played at Jamor
They would take part in the following season’s Cup Winner’s Cup
winning the first round against Neuxatel Xamax from Switzerland only to be beaten by RFC Liége in the last sixteen round
They were relegated at the end of that season but were back in 1993 staying among the elite for the remaining of the decade
especially thanks to the work developed by Fernando Santos
an achievement that paved the way for his move north to Porto
Estrela briefly returned to the first division in the mid-2000s but financial issues
like with so many clubs that peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s
almost took them to the brink of disappearing
opened the doors for first division football once again in the last couple of seasons
although many claim the club that now plays as Estrela cannot be mistaken with the old Estrela da Amadora side
The one that once silenced Guimarães before touching the Jamor sky with arms wide open.
Jensen and Christian Nørgaard – all featuring for the first time this pre-season following their involvement with Denmark at Euro 2024 – formed a midfield three for the game at Benfica Campus
The Bees started the brighter of the two sides
Damsgaard had a shot blocked inside the area and the ball broke for Jensen
whose side-footed effort deflected off a defender’s studs and wrong-footed the goalkeeper
Estrela’s striker latched onto a through ball midway through the first half
but having raced into the area could only find the side netting
Tempers flared when Yoane Wissa was hacked down on the halfway line
but the forward got back on his feet and was fine to continue
A ball was lofted over the Brentford backline
the forward took it in his stride with a positive first touch and showed composure to shoot across Hákon Valdimarsson and into the far corner
Myles Peart-Harris – one of five half-time substitutions made by head coach Thomas Frank – saw his shot skip just wide of the keeper’s right post via a mean deflection on the edge of the area
an Estrela player lifted a free-kick up and over the wall from 20 yards and the ball landed on the roof of the net
Vitaly Janelt had to be withdrawn on 65 minutes and was replaced by Yunus Emre Konak
A one-two between Bryan Mbeumo and Wissa had the Estrela defence at sixes and sevens
but the former dragged the ball just wide of the far post having advanced to the right of the area
A quick break down the right led to the ball being cut back and swept home with a first-time finish from 10 yards
The ball was again worked down the right and a wicked delivery to the front post was glanced beyond Matt Cox
Tony Yogane’s cross-shot deflected just wide of the keeper’s right post
The referee’s whistle signalled the end of a productive week in Portugal
Brentford: Valdimarsson (Cox HT); Ajer (McManus 80)
Frederick (Booth 80); Damsgaard (Yarmoliuk HT)
Jensen (Peart-Harris HT); Schade (Yogane 80)
Egypt striker Bilal Mazhar has completed a move to Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora on a free transfer after his contract with Panathinaikos expired
The 20-year-old has made a name for himself in Greece
where he played with the Panathinaikos B and youth teams
winning the 2023 UEFA Youth League top scorer award
Mazhar failed to make a single appearance for the club’s first team and saw his contract run out earlier this summer
It didn’t take him long however to find a new club after Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora signed him on a free transfer
where he will play alongside ex-Real Madrid and Man Utd winger Nani
Estrela have already made 19 signings this summer
Mahzar will now become the second Egyptian in the Portuguese league alongside Ahmed Hassan Kouka, who has returned to Rio Ave after nine years
Bilal was also a part of the Egyptian team that played in the 2024 Paris Olympics

an idyllic yet busy road lined with trees on both sides
It has been 10 days since it opened and there is a steady stream of customers walking in at around 4pm — an odd time for ice cream on a particularly cloudy day
But when has that ever kept anyone away from a scoop
“We spent almost a year hunting for a space here
and this location is perfect — bang on the main road
The response has been promising,” says Deepak Suresh
The new outlet makes it Amadora’s ninth establishment in India — there are six others in Bengaluru
The founder says that yet another new store on the East Coast Road will open in a month
there are patterned tables lined up in the centre
A mural runs through the length of the ice cream parlour’s walls
with fun illustrations depicting how ice cream is made
a waffle-shaped figure takes us through how the product is homogenised
will be templated across all their stores going forward
and chocolatey hazeltov brownies for baked desserts
Amadora also has ice cream cakes by the slice which include chocolate brownie sundae
“We now have a new alphonso vanilla crunch ice cream cake with a biscoff crumble,” Deepak says
If you are mourning the removal of mint chocolate chip from its menu
a scoop of either the new coconut macaroon and strawberry jam
or the espresso chocolate chip ice cream might more than make up for it
The tart strawberry jam cuts through the mild coconut flavour
and a crunch in every bite ensures that you do not need additional toppings for this
moist and spongy layers of banana and pineapple topped with cream cheese and pecans
The menu also includes sandwiches and coffee
This expansion within the city is part of a bigger plan for the brand
we want to open at least 60 outlets and in newer cities
Amadora Artisanal Ice Cream is open from 11am to 1am at First Avenue

United are on the brink of securing Amorim’s services as they look to move quickly following the sacking of Erik ten Hag
On Tuesday afternoon, Sporting issued a statement to Portugal’s financial regulator
confirming that United were interested in hiring Amorim and triggering his release clause
the biggest issue for United appears to be when Amorim can begin working in the Old Trafford dugout
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that sporting director Dan Ashworth was hopeful of having the 39-year-old’s appointment announced before Sunday’s clash against Chelsea
However, it has now come to light that United must reach an agreement with Sporting for this to proceed
as Amorim reportedly has a notice period that spans weeks rather than days
If the two parties are unable to find common ground on the matter
it is anticipated that Amorim could take up his new role as soon as November 24
when United head to Portman Road to face newly-promoted Ipswich Town
According to CNN Portugal
Amorim will remain at Sporting until Friday
when they meet Estrela da Amadora at Estádio José Alvalade
This has also been confirmed by journalist Ben Jacobs who wrote on X
Ruben Amorim expected to manage Sporting’s game against Estrela da Amadora on Friday.”
“All parties not putting a deadline on formalising the move or working with Chelsea specifically in mind
Amorim wants to exit in the right manner.”

Former Manchester United winger Nani is one of those players to have found pastures new
signing for Portuguese side Estrela de Amadora
As reported by A BOLA
the 37-year-old has signed a one-year-deal with the Primeira Liga outfit
Estrela finished 13th last time out and Nani will hope to help them push up the table and steer clear of a relegation battle this time around
It’s somewhat of a fairytale transfer for the winger who was born in Amadora before making his name at Sporting Lisbon
This will be Nani’s 10th club in a remarkable career that has seen him travel far and wide to ply his trade
From Manchester to Melbourne with stints in Spain
the wide-man is now going back to his roots in what will likely be his last move as a player
Nani and a group of investors have recently acquired a majority stake in Portuguese fourth-division side SU Sintrense who are based not far from Amadora
Having chalked up over 100 caps for Portugal and winning multiple honours throughout his career
the attacker’s experience will be vital on and off the pitch for his new club
scoring 41 goals which included some wonderful strikes that will live long in the memory
Nani has played over 100 times on the right flank and in his prime he would certainly fancy his chances of holding down United’s right hand side in the current squad
with Erik ten Hag still looking for an answer to the right flank conundrum that has plagued the club in recent years
Amad Diallo produced another strong pre-season display in the 3-2 win against Real Betis and looks to have moved above Antony in pecking order for the position at present.

Chelsea recently agreed a deal to sign Quenda from Sporting as they beat off competition from Manchester United to land the young winger
The 17-year-old is very highly rated around Europe and the Blues agreeing to pay £62 million to secure his services proves that
Quenda scored his second league goal of the season on Saturday as Sporting moved three points clear at the top of Liga Portugal
Geovany Quenda’s goal against Estrela Amadora has been labelled as ‘pure class’ by the Portugese media
who were impressed by the teenager’s performance
The new Chelsea youngster started on the left-hand side in the first 45 minutes before switching to the right
where he proved to be more dangerous and found the back of the net
A Bola gave him 7/10 and wrote: “He started on the left
but it was on the right that he had two good initiatives
he took Fresneda’s place at right wing and scored the second goal for Sporting with a touch of pure class after a delightful first touch.”
GoalPoint rated him 6.7/10: “The Sporting winger scored a great goal
recorded one of the highest number of possession recoveries (7)
but the one he wasted prevents him from achieving an even higher score.”
Quenda will join the West London club once he has turned 18 and it has been agreed that he will move in the summer of 2026
Although Chelsea do have three exciting youngsters ready to become part of Enzo Maresca’s squad this summer with Estevao Willian
Santos has been partially impressive in Ligue 1 and looks more than good enough to make an impact next season at Stamford Bridge
Vasco Marques and Hugo Coimbra will be the assistants and Luís Filipe the fourth official
Egypt international Bilal Mazhar has made his debut for Portuguese outfit Estrela da Amadora in a 1-0 defeat to Santa Clara
The 20-year-old striker joined Estrela on the transfer deadline day on a free transfer after his contract with Greek giants Panathinaikos came to an end
Mazhar was an unused substitute in their 2-2 against Baovista last week
before coming on in the last 15 minutes against CD Santa Clara on Saturday
Manager Filipe Martins brought in Mazhar just two minutes after Vinícius Lopes opened the scoring for Santa Clara in the 81st minute; however
Bilal Mazhar becomes the 13th Egyptian to play in Liga Portugal after Kouka
The defeat kept Nani’s side Estrela in the relegation zone with just two points from their opening six games
They will be next in action on Saturday as they host Moreirense
hoping to pick up their first win of the season
Ahmed Hassan Kouka made his second appearance of the season as Rio Ave drew 2-2 with Estoril Praia at Estádio dos Arcos
The 31-year-old striker came on in the 72nd minute after all four goals were scored to make his 131st appearance in the Portuguese top division
Rio Ave is now currently tenth in the league with seven points and will face Kouka’s former side Sporting Braga on Sunday away from home
37-year-old Nani boasts an enviable curriculum that includes a grand total of 17 titles
as well as the Champions League and the Premier League with Manchester United
Estrela da Amadora will be Nani’s second portuguese club
He made his debut for Sporting Lisbon in 2005 before signing for Manchester United in 2007.
