Kylie Fisher (she/her), an assistant professor of art history at Furman University, is a storyteller at heart. Through her work with the Queer Arts Initiative (QAI), a movement of the Upstate SC LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce
she wants to ensure more stories are told about and by members of the queer community
Fisher, a member of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program
saw an opportunity to expand conversations beyond campus
she secured funding for an undergraduate research fellow
and together they’re collaborating with the QAI on several goals:
“I feel like this project was made for me,” said Aradas
a politics and international affairs and studio art double major who came out during her middle school years
“I’m passionate about the advocacy side of politics
and I think this project is really grounded in that.”
and Alex Aradas ’26 study a mural by Eric Benjamin
Fisher said Aradas’s identity and her background in the social sciences and studio art made her the perfect choice for the fellowship
giving Aradas a chance to build on her skill sets and network with the community
Aradas said the work has revealed some startling realities about the LGBTQ+ art landscape in the Upstate
“I was really surprised by the lack of queer representation in Greenville’s murals
but not a single one was dedicated to a queer space or had anything to do with LGBTQ+
She eventually discovered a queer artist who had crafted murals in Greenville and nearby Travelers Rest
She and Fisher are hopeful about having the artist’s input for the QAI project
Fisher uses socially engaged art history to disrupt traditional silos and narratives found in academic or museum settings and bring them to a broader public audience
she hopes to build empathy and understanding in the region
She wants to characterize and amplify the queer arts scene to focus on lifting those historically marginalized voices
She hopes the QAI/Furman exhibition will spark discussions about identity and community and move Greenville’s diversity from the fringes to the center
Fisher said the belief is that Greenville doesn’t have a queer arts scene at all. “But that’s not true,” she said. “We just lack a central hub where that work can be showcased.” She explained that apart from Modal
a downtown boutique hostel and coffeehouse
she doesn’t know of another venue dedicated to LGBTQ+ art in the area
but it’s an important start toward furthering QAI’s mission toward providing queer artists outlets for their work
a way to promote themselves and sell their art
Aradas is grateful for the chance to be mentored by Fisher who
embodies the very best of Furman and makes the university a better place
volunteering or researching something new.” Fisher’s energy knows no bounds
Aradas loves every minute of the research fellowship and is thrilled about its direction and future
but representation is so important,” she said
recalling a visit to a downtown Greenville mural by Ninja Picasso that focuses on the homeless
“It’s called ‘seen-heard-valued,’ and it reminded me that this project is important because it challenges some of the narratives and stereotypes about queer people,” Aradas said. “This work is about making queer spaces in the community so that everybody feels valued. Because everyone deserves to feel like they have a space where they can exist.”

A human rights organization in El Salvador called for “justice and reparations” on Tuesday for the 600 people massacred by the military on the banks of a river 44 years ago while trying to escape the civil war
women and elderly people were killed in the community of Las Aradas
An investigation by a Truth Commission created by the UN concluded in 1993 that the military “deliberately killed” these “non-combatant” civilians who were trying to cross the river to take refuge in Honduras
“44 years of impunity have passed in the Sumpul massacre and there is a lack of will to apply measures of justice and reparation,” said Alejandro Díaz
which defends victims of the civil war (1980-1992)
which denounced the massacre before the courts in 1992
the defunct National Guard and the Nationalist Democratic Organization (Orden)
a paramilitary group that collaborated with the Armed Forces in the fight against the leftist guerrillas
The UN report also established that “the massacre was made possible by the cooperation of the Honduran Armed Forces
which prevented the passage of the Salvadoran villagers” to the neighboring country
It also considered that “there was a cover-up of the facts by the Salvadoran military authorities” and that this massacre constituted “a serious violation” of the norms of international humanitarian law
Tutela Legal accuses a group of officers led by the then Minister of Defense, General José Guillermo García
who is also under an arrest warrant for the murder of four Dutch journalists in March 1982
To avoid going to prison for the Dutch case
García has been admitted to a private hospital for 21 months
considered the most powerful military man in the Armed Forces at the time
according to the human rights NGO Cristosal
the group of retired generals stated in a declaration
on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Salvadoran army
“that no soldier should be being judged
criticized or questioned for having fulfilled the mission of defending El Salvador.”
“I ask the political leadership of the country to issue a pardon decree for all the members of the Armed Forces who participated in the conflict and who in one way or another are being prosecuted
that for us will be the best gift in this Bicentennial,” Corado told Channel 21 television
the coordinator of the NGO Human Rights Commission
regretted that on Monday a committee of Congress dominated by the party of President Nayib Bukele shelved a bill to punish those responsible for crimes during the civil war
“They want to continue protecting the victimizers and not the victims,” Montenegro said
The Salvadoran civil war left more than 75,000 dead
thousands of disappeared and substantial losses to the national economy
Three people trapped deep inside a Spanish potash mine when a gallery collapsed earlier on Thursday have died
we can confirm the death of three young people who were working in the mine," Aragones told reporters outside Cabanasses mine in Suria
75 kilometres (46 miles) northwest of Barcelona
Rescuers had recovered and identified the bodies of three people who were "around 30 years old"
sending his condolences to their families and colleagues
One of the victims had been an intern there for just a few days
while another was working at the mine for nearly six months
Two had been studying for master's degrees in engineering at the University Polytechnic of Catalonia (PCU)
while the other was doing a doctorate in geology at the University of Barcelona
Rescuers said the three victims had been trapped "at a depth of about 900 metres" (2,950 feet) after one of the galleries collapsed just before 9:00 am (0800 GMT)
it was hours before rescuers got down to the place where they could confirm their deaths
The rescue was complicated by the need to ensure the safety of the teams involved
regional interior minister Joan Ignasi Elena had told reporters earlier
saying it would be "reckless" to rush such an operation
Aragones announced the deaths on Twitter saying: "We deeply regret the death of the three miners in the accident in Suria mine."
Many local and national media outlets also said they had died
but police said they could not confirm the reports until "they were reached by a doctor" and their families had been notified
all three were carrying out "a routine task that they do every day"
mine worker Carlos Arnaldo told reporters at the scene
"Sometimes the mine gives you no warning: the roof caves in and nothing can be done," he said
"This is terrible news," tweeted Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz
sending "love and solidarity to the families and colleagues of the workers caught up in the collapse at the Suria mine"
which specialises in fertilisers and chemicals
the Cabanasses mine had recently passed a security inspection
"The last inspection was just three weeks ago and it was cleared without any sign of irregularities," Catalan regional business minister Roger Torrent told reporters at the scene
ICL Iberia is the only company that produces potassium salts in Spain
Two miners died in December 2013 when a gallery collapsed at the same mine
The last major mining accident in Spain was two months earlier
when six people were killed and five others injured following a gas leak at a coal mine in the northwest
It was the worst accident at a Spanish mine since 14 miners were killed in August 1995 during a methane explosion at a coal mine in the northern province of Asturias

I was always told that “beauty is on the inside.” But
I can clearly see that we humans often attach great importance to superficial things
pets don’t care how their owners look
pretty or handsome — as long as they get some love and respect
a cat named Romeo didn’t get the same treatment from the people he put his trust in
He’s an orange cat with a lovely coat of fur and soft paws
¡Buenos días!Desde Santuario Compasión Animal y Romeo en especial

Romeo was born deformed and was left for dead for being “too ugly.” He ended up on the street
and people often looked at him with disgust when they saw his face
it seemed like Romeo would stay homeless forever or even be killed
The Spanish animal rescue non-profit Santuario Compasión Animal heard about Romeo and couldn’t let him live on the street any longer
The whole team thought he was perfect just the way he was — and they adopted him
“We were told nobody wanted him because he is ugly
He’s a little lovable kitten who loves to play like the rest of the cats
And his differences make him special,” the organization says
Esta tarde estábamos como locos buscando a Romeo por todo el Santuario porque no lo encontrábamos por ningún lado

Romeo was taken in with the organization’s other animals
But the story doesn’t end there… When Romeo got his new home
Romeo became famous and thousands of people were singing his praises online
everyone knew what a wonderful cat he is and a lot of people wanted to adopt him
he lives happily on the Santuario Compasión Animal’s farm

The important thing is how we treat each other

Children have always teased each other; it is part of growing up
But sometimes it goes far beyond that and turns into a complete nightmare…
and it raises that point that we have to do much more to make sure that our kids don’t bully others — because every child deserves to live without fear and have a happy childhood
is a 6-year-old boy who was attacked by a bunch of 5-year-olds outside his apartment complex
like beating him up,” Carter said in an interview about his friend
“I just told them to stop… and then they did it to me.”
But what the bullies did next was more than just tease him
Not only did they use their fists to batter Carter
he had wounds and bruises all over his body
bruises across his face and a lacerated eye
“It’s been hell. I haven’t slept I haven’t eaten. I can’t do anything,” she told KOMO News
“I can’t even leave his side.”
STANDING UP TO BULLIES: Six-year-old Carter English said a group of children attacked him with rocks and sticks — and…
Posted by ABC7 on Monday, August 27, 2018
the doctors had to pick dirt and sawdust out of his eyes
The police have contacted social services to get to the bottom of what happened to ensure that it never happens again
Dana and Carter live in fear and are afraid that it will happen again
I don’t know what I’d do if something like that happened to my children
I think we should teach our children to stand up to bullies
I really hope the parents of the bullies had a serious talk with their kids
If these children can do this at the age of 5
I can’t imagine what they’ll do when they’re older if no one teaches them the difference between right and wrong

When William Jazwinski was out driving one morning back in April
he saw a police car flashing its lights in his rearview mirror
And as the police officer walked up to his truck
William rolled down his window and wondered if he had been driving too fast
The officer just wanted to thank William for his military service
William realized that the officer must have seen the military bumper sticker on the back of his truck
The officer asked William where he had served
and William replied that he had been in Iraq for 15 months
That’s when the officer started to open
He told William that his son also served in Iraq but never came back
William was moved by the officer’s story and a sense of sorrow came over him
the officer noticed an American flag on the dashboard
It was identical to the flag he had received when he was informed about his son’s death
It sparked the officer to ask William an unusual question
I still don’t believe it most days he’s gone,” the officer said
William teared up and got out of his truck to give the officer the hug he had asked for
William had just come from a PTSD (post-traumatic stress syndrome) rehabilitation program and a hug was just what he needed
Later, William shared the event on his Facebook page
and it has been shared almost 180,000 times
Share if you were also moved by this story and if you’d like to thank William and the officer for their service
all the fear and anxiety disappears and is replaced with gratitude that can last a lifetime
That’s what happened to a 25-year-old British student named Georgia Bradley while she was on vacation in Greece this summer
Georgia thought they might try and rape her
Georgia is forever grateful — and she showed her appreciation in the sweetest way possible
It all started when Georgia Bradley was on the beach in Greece this summer
Two men started following her and they wouldn’t leaver her alone
“I decided to go for a walk along the beach and found two Greek men who kept harassing me to go out for a drink. I kept telling them I didn’t want to,” Georgia told the Daily Mail
“One of them grabbed me on the arm and I didn’t know what was going to happen
I was on my own and it was a very scary and difficult situation.”
jumped up at me and began barking and licking my hand
She must have noticed something was wrong,” Georgia said
The men were ran off and Georgia got a new best friend in the form of a lovable dog
the dog followed Georgia back to the apartment where she was staying
“We had an instant bond… We went right round the town to see if she had an owner
but we couldn’t find one and we had to fly the next day,” said Georgia
Georgia took the dog to an animal shelter and a local veterinarian
we saw her around outside the bars and restaurants trying to get the attention of the tourists
she followed us around and we wondered what we could do
we looked back and Pepper was running after the car
she decided that she just had to rescue Pepper
Georgia spent her savings on getting Pepper a microchip
Pepper was allowed to travel to the United Kingdom
but their story doesn’t end there… One week after Pepper arrived at Georgia’s home in Cornwall
When I heard about the strong bond between Pepper and Georgia
the saying “dogs are a man’s best friend” really hit home

Jessica Beniquez ate fast food every day and spent hours in front of the TV
“I laid in bed watching series after series on Netflix
and she took the first steps on her inspiring journey
Being overweight is both difficult and unhealthy
but it can be incredibly difficult to break the pattern and change your life
That’s why I think stories like Jessica’s are worth highlighting — because they show that weight loss can be done
The first habit Jessica changed was to stop eating fast food
changing to healthier alternatives was a big shift
and started watching exercise videos on YouTube
but eventually she dared to go to the gym — a place that had always terrified her
Jessica trains for about two hours each day — and
her new lifestyle has made quite a difference
Jessica documents her weight loss and the changes she’s made in her life on social media
Her hope is that she can inspire others to believe in themselves
“My name is Jessica and I’m 21,” she recently wrote on Instagram
“I’m 5’4 (162 cm) and I have lost over 170 lbs (80 kg) with diet and exercise
Starting at over 320 lbs (145 kg) and currently between 145-148 (60–70 kg).”
“There were and still are obstacles that get in the way
but that’s just the way it is and I have to deal with it
Jessica’s transformation has not only been physical
“I never expected to be where I am today
I have so much more energy… It’s crazy the things I can do now that I couldn’t do before,” Jessica says

One of their first actions was to gather Jews in ghettos
The Nazis began building concentration camps in order to launch “Generalplan Ost,” an ethnic cleansing of Jews
The year 1933 saw the building of the first concentration camp
there were a total of 730 concentration camps
Prisoners were used as an industrial workforce
which was of great use to the Germans during the war
The goal was to make the Jews extinct in Europe
Auschwitz consisted of three parts
with Auschwitz II-Birkenbau being a pure death camp
When my grandmother came to Sweden on the White Buses

The factory was near the SS headquarters in the Polish city of Piotrków
The children were considered good workers since their tiny hands could polish glass in places where adult hands were too big and clumsy
Moses worked in the factory before he and his mother
were sent to the concentration camp in Ravensbrük
My grandfather was sent to the Buschenwald concentration camp
and Moses was sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp
he was taken care of by a woman who later was given the name “The Angel of Bergen-Belsen,” for saving so many orphans
my grandfather Saoul searched for over a year before discovering that some children had been brought to Sweden
Saoul and my grandmother Rosa met in Sweden
and six of my grandmother’s seven siblings had been murdered
My grandfather’s first wife and all six of his siblings were all killed
few of those who survived the Holocaust are still with us
it’s important that we remember their stories and that we keep sharing them so that history never repeats itself

Adele burst onto the international music scene 10 years ago with her debut album 19
It was also a mega hit and won her seven Grammy Awards
One of the standout songs on the disc is “Someone Like You,” a very personal song about a breakup
The song was celebrated by critics and it’s still one of Adele’s most popular songs
The recorded version of the song is powerful enough
but it becomes even more moving when Adele performs it live
One particularly emotional performance of the classic song came when Adele performed it at Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011
Adele gives a sublime performance that gives me goosebumps every time I watch it
And from the second Adele sees how lovingly the audience treats her powerful song
There’s no doubt that this song means at least as much to Adele as it does to her audience

The bond between mother and child is amazing
I guess it starts before the child is even born
it doesn’t start slowly and gradually get stronger over time
I guess that’s why the video below is spreading like wildfire on the internet right now
It shows the love of a mother for her baby
a mother holds her newborn baby in her arms and kisses her gently and sweetly
the newborn puckers her lips like she wants another kiss
The mom in the video can’t help but laugh heartily
You can really see how surprised she is that her infant can already make such a dramatic facial expression
The little girl really lights up the whole room with her cuteness
the mom gives her baby another kiss — and her baby does it again
This is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time
I totally understand why the mother can’t stop laughing
It’s amazing moment between mother and child that this mom will never forget

That fact that many animals are smart isn’t news
But did you know that octopuses are also intelligent
“They are probably the closest we will come to meeting an intelligent alien,” Peter Godfrey-Smith writes in his article “The Mind of an Octopus,” published in Scientific Mind
According to Sy Montgomery, writing in Orion Magazine
octopuses can recognize people and move toward humans they’re familiar with
but a family on holiday at the Red Sea got a firsthand experience of this a few years ago
they could see that it was an octopus that had gotten stuck
They weren’t sure if it was still alive
the family returned to the beach and saw a shadow in the water
It was the octopus they had saved the day before
It quickly swam to them and followed them along the shore
Here’s what the family wrote on YouTube
where they posted a video of the memorable event:
He accompanied us a long time while we walked along the beach
We are sure that this octopus came back to thank us for saving his life
It’s amazing how intelligent animals are.”
And they also decided that they’d never eat octopus again

Heather and Riley had only married for a little while when they found out that Riley was pregnant
But the couple wasn’t just welcoming one child into the world — they were welcoming two
Only 11 weeks into Heather’s pregnancy
her doctors told her that she would be having conjoined twins
When Erin and Abby were brought into the world via Caesarean section in June 2016
The twins’ heads had fused together in the early stages of the pregnancy
Heather and Riley had to spent a lot of time at the hospital during the pregnancy
The babies had to stay at the hospital under the close supervision and care of their doctors
This was certainly wasn’t what the young couple had expected
but there was hope that things could get better
Heather lived with the babies in the hospital and Riley regularly visited his wife and children
The separation process took multiple surgeries over several months
a 30-person team performed the demanding 11-hour surgery
Although the surgery carried many risks — including the chance that either or both of the babies could die — it was successful
the twins are on the mend and their future looks bright
Watch a video about the twins’ journey here:
