In a neighborhood known for its Chinese food, there’s a new restaurant on the Upper West Side that’s making a statement. Aves
recently opened is already getting noticed for its elegant atmosphere and unique menu that puts a modern twist on traditional Chinese dishes
the restaurant’s thoughtful design is easy to notice
and the décor gets its inspiration from the bold colors and patterns of peacock feathers
The dark blue walls and metallic furnishings combine to create a “sleek” interior
One of the most remarkable aspects of the restaurant is its high ceilings
who has worked in the restaurant business for more than a decade
to the space when he was looking for a home for his new concept
Liu started out as a busser and has worked his way up to managing restaurants
Some of the fine dining establishments he has been affiliated with have even earned stars from the Michelin Guide
“I’ve always wanted to open up a concept like this,” he said about Aves
“Upscale dining is my passion and what I really love to do.”
Aves is also notable for its menu
Its dishes strike a balance between classics that you would expect at a Chinese food restaurant – such as Peking duck and dim sum soup dumplings – and some unexpected surprises
Liu still strives to make the menu approachable
“We want to keep it simple and just have a good amount of diverse selections.” In addition to this curated list
more vegan and vegetarian options are also being added
The final ingredient in what makes Aves special is
Liu puts great attention on the hiring and training of the restaurant’s staff
he knows that the front of the house can make all the difference in the dining experience
“These are the people who are the actual face of the restaurant,” he said
“The level of service that people should expect in the upscale restaurant is extremely high
I try to meet that and try to exceed that as well.”
Now that Aves is past its soft opening phase
word about the restaurant is getting out fast
(Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was among the early guests.) Located in the heart of the Upper West Side at 102 West 86th Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam)
it is at one of the neighborhood’s main intersections – steps away from the 1
Aves is becoming a local favorite for regulars in the area
And with more inventive dishes and seasonal changes to the menu on the way

Fact: There’s no shortage of fantastic food options on the Upper West Side
but some establishments simply rise above the rest
As the neighborhood is a diverse melting pot of the world’s most covetable cuisines
standing out can be tricky — yet Aves effortlessly understands the assignment
The area’s newest upscale Chinese restaurant is already making waves
Conveniently located at 102 West 86th Street (just west of Columbus Avenue)
Aves recently opened its doors in the former La Mirabelle space
While Chinese cuisine certainly attracts its share of purists loyal to their longstanding favorites
this buzzy eatery is providing a fresh take on traditional dishes and doing so in a dazzling modern setting
Aves (translated from “birds” in Latin) takes direct inspiration from peacocks and bamboo
a decor decision which is immediately apparent
Working alongside a renowned international interior design firm
the Aves team has executed a sleek space framed by a striking ceiling meant to channel a peacock’s tail
the complementary colors that adorn the walls blend a peacock’s trademark teal
It sets the scene for a luxurious (yet comfortable) dining experience
you can expect to find elevated fare packed with familiar flair
The menu is heavily influenced from various regions of China and includes comfort classics like soup dumplings
options like Tuna Tartare and Braised Pork Belly add an extra dash of elegance to the mix
“Enjoy the iconic flavors — tender duck with that signature crispy skin
and fresh veggies.” Delicious is an understatement
Another signature option is the Fish Fragrant Eggplant
a beloved Sichuan dish that’s “all about balance
tangy and savory notes into a harmonious explosion of flavors.” Lucky for the vegetarians in your life
there’s no fish involved; this will also serve as an excellent side dish
“We have guests almost once a week telling us ‘there’s no good Chinese in this area’; many former regulars of La Mirabelle are thrilled to see us in the space,” owner Leon Liu told us exclusively
Another dubbed it a “great new neighborhood spot,” praising the fresh vibes
fantastic food and shouting out the delicious cocktails (enjoy $8 drinks and 50% off oysters during happy hour
If you’re looking for a destination for your next family dinner, date night or small group event, Aves is just the ticket — make your reservation here or call the restaurant at (212) 871-7102
Metrics details
Enantiornithes are the most successful early-diverging avian clade
their fossils revealing important information regarding the structure of Cretaceous avifaunas and the parallel refinement of flight alongside the ornithuromorph lineage that includes modern birds
The most diverse recognized family of Early Cretaceous enantiornithines is the Bohaiornithidae
known from the Jehol Biota in northeastern China
Members of this clade enhance our understanding of intraclade morphological diversity and elucidate the independent evolution of this unique lineage
we report on a new specimen of bohaiornithid
from the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in western Liaoning
The holotype specimen is considerably smaller than all other known bohaiornithids (roughly half the size of Bohaiornis)
The presence of complete fusion in compound elements strongly suggests it represents a mature or nearly mature individual
and therefore substantially increases the known size range of this clade
This specimen further differs from known bohaiornithids in that it exhibits reduced manual unguals and an increased number of sacral vertebrae
which indicates bohaiornithids evolved increased flight capabilities in parallel to other enantiornithine lineages
which are rarely preserved in bohaiornithids
reveal the presence of remiges with rounded distal margins and short crural feathers
which adds to the considerable known bohaiornithid diversity
The new specimen preserves some new details of the plumage of bohaiornithids and a reduced alular digit
which highlights the parallel and repeated evolution of manual reduction in birds during this early stage in their evolution
Aves Linnaeus, 1758; [sensu Sereno, 1999]27
Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen. et sp. nov. (Fig. 1)
Holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
The generic name refers to the derived morphology (e.g.
increased number of sacral vertebrae) of this taxon relative to other bohaiornithids
The specific name refers to the town of Lamadong
MHGU-0288 (housed at the Museum of Hebei GEO University), a nearly complete and articulated skeleton preserved in dorsal aspect with traces of feathers surrounding the skeleton (Fig. 1; Table 1)
Referrable to Enantiornithes based on the presence of the following diagnostic features: a furcula with a ventral margin wider than dorsal margin; a proportionately elongate hypocleidium of the furcula; minor metacarpal projecting distally farther than major metacarpal; metatarsal IV mediolaterally thinner than both metatarsals II and III with the trochlea reduced to a single condyle; and a J-shaped metatarsal I
Neobohaiornis lamadongensis is an icterid-sized (~ 55 g) enantiornithine with the following unique combination of features: ceratobranchial bones rostrally expanded; furcular rami straight
medially-curved intermediate lateral trabeculae of the sternum; alular digit ending well before the distal margin of the major metacarpal; penultimate phalanx of the major digit proportionately shorter and robust; alular and major digit unguals reduced; forked cranial processes on the pygostyle strongly developed
Skull of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
The dorsal process of the maxilla is concave dorsoventrally in lateral view
which participates in the ventral and caudal margin of the external naris
This process is slender and is caudodorsally oriented
At least four teeth are preserved in the left maxilla
The right and left nasals are exposed in dorsal view
The premaxillary process of the nasal is long and slender
and gradually increases in mediolateral width towards the internasal suture
with a ridge present on the dorsal surface
The lateral margin of this bone is concave and forms the caudal margin of the external naris
The ascending process of the maxilla is rostrocaudally 55% wider than the nasal process of the premaxilla
The orbital process is unclear due to overlap by other bones
The mandibular process appears bicondylar and has a concave margin
The oval-shaped parietals are unfused to each other
The axial skeleton of the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
(A) cervical vertebrae; (B) caudal vertebrae
Pectoral girdle of the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
The blue arrows indicate intermediate trabeculae
The distal portion of the right furcular rami exhibits globe-shaped epicleidial expansion also observed in other bohaiornithids (i.e.
The furcular rami are dorsolaterally excavated so that their cross-section is L-shaped and the ventral margin is much wider than the narrow dorsal margin
Forelimb of the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
this is more developed in Neobohaiornis than most other enantiornithines
Phalanx I of the minor digit is subequal in craniocaudal depth to the minor metacarpal except where it tapers just before its articulation with the second minor digit phalanx
Both ilia are preserved, but the preacetabular wings are lost (Fig. 3B)
The postacetabular wing is narrow and bluntly tapers caudally
The dorsal margin of the postacetabular is convex
The right and left pubes viewed in dorsal and lateral aspects respectively
are concave dorsally and medially (convex ventrally and laterally)
The pubes formed an unfused contact along the distal quarter of their lengths
but the right element indicates the presence of a dorsal process that contacted the ilium
Hindlimb of the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp. nov. (MHGU-0288). (A) left hindlimb; (B) right hindlimb. fe femur, fi fibula, ti tibiotarsus.
The feet of the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
Plumage preserved in the holotype of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
(A) apices of the feathers extending from the caudal margin of the external nares down the neck; (B) distribution of crural feathers along the left tibiotarsus; (C) A pair of rachis-dominated rectrices (blue arrows); (D) The primary wing feathers preserved on the left wing
The relationships of Neobohaiornis lamadongensis gen.et sp
(A) The strict consensus tree from current phylogenetic analysis; (B) The reduced strict consensus tree after deactivate six unstable taxa from the same phylogenetic analysis
The discovery of Neobohaiornis therefore considerably increases the body size range and diversity of bohaiornithids
This hints at greater ecological diversity
although there currently exists no direct evidence concerning diet or ecological niche in this clade
This suggests that these major lineages differentiated themselves with distinct tail plumages
Additional differences most likely also existed
although these are impossible to determine in the fossil record
The new specimen represents a new taxon that contributes to the considerable recognized diversity of bohaiornithid enantiornithines in the Jiufotang Formation
This specimen highlights the skeletal adaptations
such as the reduction of the alular and major digit and possible increase in sacral vertebrae
as they evolved more refined flight capabilities in parallel to other enantiornithine lineages
The new specimen preserves the best-known plumage of any bohaiornithid
which demonstrates that rachis-dominated tail feathers were likely widespread in this clade
The new specimen (MHGU-0288) was discovered in the Lower Cretaecous Jiufotang Formation near Lamadong town outside Jianchang City in western Liaoning Province
and collected by The Museum of Hebei GEO University (MHGU)
where the specimen is permanently reposited
The analysis was run implementing a traditional (heuristic) search using the tree-bisection reconnection (TRB) swapping algorithm

Vendrán Las Aves - "The Birds Will Come" - is a brief, quiet, hopeful game about burnout recovery. Summarised as a "slice of life tamagotchi" and available in Spanish and English, it's a gamejam production from Francisco Riolobos, Chuso Montero and Deconstructeam, the Valencia-based developers behind The Red String Club and The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
It's free to download from Itch.io
and takes the form of a snowglobe perspective of somebody's one-room apartment
The person in question has just left their job after a rough spell
with barely the willpower to do anything beyond getting out of bed
Your task is to help them through each day and rebuild their morale till they feel able to pluck a few chords
All this happens by way of simple resource allocation
the character wakes with a few points of energy
You must divide this between things like eating
doling out their time in such a way that they wake the next morning feeling a little more refreshed
and a little more inclined to pick up the shiny new axe propped in the corner
you only have the wherewithal to order takeaway and doomscroll
One thing that comes across unsaid is the importance of asking others for help - and accepting it when they offer
If your mum comes over for a chat with a Tupperware of food
it'll save you a few points cooking that you can put towards reading a book
I found Vendrán Las Aves to be a fair approximation of my own experiences of burnout in my twenties and thirties - that feeling of mingled emptiness and restlessness
the frustration at discovering yourself to be finite
and the growing worry that the world ends outside your apartment door
Portraying it all as a question of points might seem reductive; personally

When I think of Chilean wine, I think of cabernet
until a week or so ago when I was taken aback by a glass of Aves del Sur Estate chardonnay from the Central Valley
ha moment when I caught wind of the tropical aromas swirling in my glass
Chardonnay is not my first love when it comes to white wine
There are too many irresistible European white wines for my liking
this $11.99 chardonnay that comes in a screw top bottle was just too good to pass up

Goat cheese is a fantastic partner with this white wine
I had a glass with soft goat cheese on a crostini topped with a honey and fig spread from Aldi’s
It’s also nice with slices of Drunken Goat cheese that I found at Beau’s Bistro & Bar in Copley
I picked out a hint of buttery richness in the finish even though this wine wasn’t aged in oak and didn’t go though malolactic fermentation
it was a match made in heaven with a cup of Chef Beau’s creamy clam chowder
It was also the perfect pour with a carryout order of shrimp fried rice and one of my beloved Maryland crab cakes from Pappas Seafood in Baltimore
I’ll definitely add a few bottles of this chardonnay to the white wines I have on hand at home
I encourage Kendall-Jackson and Rombauer Vineyards fans to give this under $12 bottle a try

Tenants across from the scenic bird refuge say the ongoing construction and mess has caused frayed nerves and frustration
“It’s not fun to be listening to the noise and to concentrate," said client Karina Woolley of La Playa Pilates
Navigating broken pathways forced business owners to scramble their schedules resulting in less business
“We’ve had to cancel clients we’ve had to move clients," said owner Amanda Leone of Leone Salon
“Our business has dropped about 20 to 30 percent since his construction," said owner Mandy Wright of La Playa Pilates
working at the business complex was a dream come true until now
“So disappointed … built it from the ground up and just watched somebody ruin it," said Leone
a Los Angeles based investor called the Runyon Group plans to transform the complex into a new shopping center and rename it
Wright is also dealing with customers canceling appointments
"A lot of our clients have health concerns … and being around a lot of dust … and you know basically this is a construction zone," said Wright
Wright’s main concern is helping to maintain the health and safety of her clients
“The empathy and the regard for us as business owners has been … zero," said Wright
now they are jackhammering … and they haven’t warned us about any of this," said Leone
Wright and Leone say they're not sure what the future has in store
but they won’t be their doors won't be open at this complex much longer
"The Post will have two full-service restaurants and two smaller food-and-beverage outlets and beyond that
they’ll shift away from the services that currently dominate Las Aves and toward retail
The Post will have an eclectic mix of merchants
but be completely geared to the community of Santa Barbara and Montecito."

Birds Canada has worked in partnerships to halt and reverse biodiversity loss
and strengthen inclusive nature conservation
On May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Honorable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced an investment of 15 million canadian dollars over 3 years to Birds Canada to support the health of biodiversity and ecosystems in Latin America and the Caribbean through the Conserva Aves Initiative
This contribution will protect migratory birds and their habitats and help achieve the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
the investment will enable partnerships to support locally led
and gender-equitable conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean
to create 100 new protected areas totaling at least 2 million hectares
Thanks to this investment, Birds Canada becomes the newest partner in Conserva Aves – a bird and biodiversity conservation partnership created in 2021 – joining American Bird Conservancy, National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC)
“Birds Canada is thrilled to be joining the Conserva Aves initiative thanks to a significant investment by the Government of Canada
Creating protected areas in Latin America and the Caribbean will not only help those countries halt and reverse biodiversity loss – it will help Canada do the same
by protecting essential overwintering habitat for dozens of migratory bird species
we will support meaningful conservation action and gender equity that benefits birds
The health of migratory bird populations is a key shared indicator of biodiversity; three billion birds have been lost in North America since 1970
most of which spend over half the year in Latin America and the Caribbean
Conserva Aves is an important answer to this challenge as an inclusive conservation and climate change mitigation strategy benefiting birds
Birds know no boundaries and connect us all in the shared responsibility to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Birds Canada brings to the initiative decades of knowledge in migration ecology, Community Science monitoring, and collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, along with projects in the Americas, such as the Motus Wildlife Tracking System
the organization will work with national and local sort of partners to support locally led and gender-equitable change
and Afro-descendant Peoples to achieve inclusive nature conservation
“American Bird Conservancy looks forward to working with Birds Canada to advance conservation for migratory and resident birds while also empowering and improving the livelihoods of Indigenous peoples and local communities
Their involvement will further strengthen Conserva Aves’ work with ABC’s partners throughout Latin American BirdScapes
places where smart land use leads to successful bird conservation
we will promote and invest in best management practices that benefit birds
Birds Canada joins Conserva Aves at a relevant moment when the initiative is expanding its wings from the Tropical Andes initial phase to Mexico
These regions are home to some of the highest biodiversity anywhere on Earth and provide winter homes for many migratory birds
Conserva Aves has seen exciting success to date
with four of them already totaling 1,158,600 hectares (2,862,963 acres) in protected areas in the process of being formally declared
The initiative is also advancing preliminary conversations with partner organizations in Guatemala
and Caribbean countries to reach the goal of two million hectares of subnational protected areas in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2028
“We celebrate this partnership with Birds Canada to fly together and to protect new territories of life
Their arrival reinforces Conserva Aves’ commitment to working with local communities and ethnic groups
encouraging participation and respecting their worldview to strengthen empowerment and inclusion in the region
We know that the global ambition of a 30×30 conservation target is a tough road
national and local partners working with passion and support from all of us.”
as we have already seen in these two years of implementing Conserva Aves
Conservation is connection: connecting knowledge
and local and national authorities while being respectful of partner skills and experiences in the places where we work. We know that effective conservation is only possible with a hemispheric connection
from the Boreal forests of the north to the Patagonia region in the south
Only through international partnerships can we achieve full annual life cycle conservation of our shared birds and hemispheric biodiversity.
“A hemispheric approach to bird conservation is one of the key drivers in Audubon’s ongoing work to bend the bird curve
and Conserva Aves is a powerful example of that
the initiative has seen significant results made possible by working with communities
and international allies to pool resources around a common goal
What began as a daring idea and ambitious model
is now an innovative and growing alliance where new partners like Birds Canada can find the energy
and resources to bend the bird curve in favor of biodiversity and the endemic and migratory birds that these territories share
We celebrate the arrival of this new member to Conserva Aves.”

and local communities as stewards of protected areas through citizen science
improved access to information such as KBAs
Birds Canada has been advocating for the inclusion of critical bird sites in land use planning processes and as candidates for increased protection
This resonates with the nature and identity of our Conserva Aves initiative
and sustainability of community-led subnational protected areas grounded in traditional knowledge and safeguards
Integrating Birds Canada’s expertise into Conserva Aves will bolster the efficacy of our overall approach
particularly in terms of facilitating access to information and decision-making tools.”

In addition to repairing street and sidewalks throughout the project area
we’re building a variety of travel safety enhancements
These upgrades are informed by the community and support our Vision Zero goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets
Let’s discuss two of the enhancements in more detail
the new landscaped median on 15th Ave NW and a new bike and pedestrian signal and crosswalk at NW 51st St
We’re adding a new landscaped median between NW 50th St and NW 54th St to calm traffic by narrowing the street
and reduces the likelihood of cars crossing into oncoming traffic
The new landscaped median will replace the eastern southbound lane on 15th Ave NW between NW 50th St and NW 54th St
The median will include planted shrubs and new trees to add to the urban tree canopy along this busy arterial
we keep the two northbound general-purpose lanes and bus lane while reducing the southbound lanes from three to two between NW 54th and NW 51st
aligning with the lane configuration north of 57th to Crown Hill and on the Ballard Bridge.
Construction of the landscaped median is scheduled to start as early as March 2025
Crews are building a new bike and pedestrian signal and crosswalk at NW 51st St
creating a better connection to the east and west side of the street on 15th Ave NW
This connection will make it safer for people to walk
and bike across 15th Ave NW and provide greater accessibility for people to travel between the Ballard Ave Landmark District and Ballard Brewery District
Adding a new east-west crossing provides another way to cross 15th Ave NW to reach businesses
These enhancements were based on robust community interest and were a top priority articulated during the project’s design outreach phase
The new bike and pedestrian signal and crosswalk will operate similarly to the existing crossing at 15th Ave NW and NW 53rd St
where it turns on when the crossing button is pressed
The new crossing will include a ‘landing refuge’ in the middle of the multi-lane street for people walking and rolling
creating a more comfortable experience while crossing the street
Construction for the new bike and pedestrian crossing began last December and will last several months
Construction of the new landscaped median will begin as early as March 2025 and last several months

so the City will address that issue by installing separate sewer and stormwater mains in this area at the same time
As part of the City’s Wastewater Master Plan and Long Term Control Plan
separating wastewater from stormwater is an ongoing responsibility under the Consent Decree agreement between the City of Portsmouth and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES)
The project involves the installation of three separate water mains: one for drinking water
The project will help reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) when the single pipe is flooded with stormwater in heavy rain events.
This project included the reconstruction of the Willard Street area from Middle Street to Marston St
and includes Orchard St and Ash St. The replacement of sidewalks
