MLB Trade Rumors

McCarthy has continued to put the ball in play
He has only fanned in six of 47 plate appearances
with five hard-hit balls (ones with an exit velocity of 95 MPH or better) on the season
McCarthy has never had imposing batted ball metrics
He will be able to play every day in Reno rather than work in a fourth outfield role as he tries to get on track
That’ll seemingly afford an MLB opportunity for the switch-hitting Barrosa
He made a brief major league debut last season
He hit .270/.360/.421 over 75 Triple-A games last season
The Venezuela native is out to a stronger start in 2025
batting .295/.362/.495 with a trio of homers over 105 plate appearances in the Pacific Coast League
Elsewhere on the roster, reliever A.J. Puk is scheduled for an MRI today (link via ESPN’s Jesse Rogers)
The southpaw landed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with inflammation in his throwing elbow
The Snakes will presumably provide a return timeline after getting the imaging results
Puk has been brilliant since the D-Backs acquired him from Miami at last summer’s deadline
He owns a 1.78 ERA with 55 strikeouts through 35 1/3 frames in an Arizona uniform
Alexander would probably have gotten those reps had he been fully healthy throughout camp
but he’ll remain in Triple-A for the time being
Arizona Diamondbacks A.J. Puk Blaze Alexander Jake McCarthy Jorge Barrosa
the Dbacks are off to a solid start and getting contributions from several position players and pitchers – Carroll
Suarez and Gurriel going they would really start rolling
Given Jake’s FB% has spiked up and LD% spiked down while his Pull% has spiked up and Cent% has spiked down
it would appear Jake has tried to add a little pop to his game
I suggest he stick to spraying line drives around the ballpark and creating chaos on the bases
The Phils should trade for him right now while is stock is low
What reason do the DBacks have to trade McCarthy right now
They’d consider trading McCarthy for more pressing needs
-the rotation is already full (even if we’re waiting on Gallen/Burnes to lock in)
-the bullpen is already full (the “lowest leverage” arm is Morillo
-the everyday lineup is already locked in (even if we’re waiting on Gurriel
Gurriel/Suarez doing as bad as they have sucks
but both can carry a lineup when they’re going right)
And the lineup is immediately in a better spot when Marte is back from the IL
The bench is the one area where you could argue for clear cut improvements
but we’re waiting on Alexander and Del Castillo to return (as much as a like Herrera
And we obviously are going to need roster space when Lawlar forces the team’s hand
So what would the Phillies even have to offer for a player that’s been an above average player on a rate basis for 2 of his last 3 full seasons
and still has multiple years of control left
but a slow start doesn’t make the prior production disappear

McCarthy had been in the midst of a rough early-season stretch, going just 3-for-41 to open the year (a .073 batting average). He'll head down to Triple-A to work on his swing as he's previously done, as Alek Thomas will likely take over primary center field duties.
The 24-year-old Barrosa will now get his second taste of the major leagues. In 2023, an injury to Alek Thomas afforded him his first cup of coffee in the bigs, but he hit just .176 with just three base hits in 18 plate appearances.
Barrosa was then sent back to Reno, where he ended up battling injuries of his own for the remainder of 2024.
In 2025, he showed out in Spring Training with a .320/.433/.480 slash over 30 plate appearances. He began the season in Reno, where he posted an .857 OPS with three homers.
There's not a great deal of power in Barrosa's bat, as he measures in at a mere 5-foot-6, 165 pounds. But his plus speed and ability to hit from both sides of plate award him opportunities to rack up base hits as a contact hitter, and even stretch singles into extra-base hits. He very rarely strikes out, with a solid eye for balls and strikes and a good approach at the plate.
He plays solid center field defense with excellent range, and will be a useful defensive replacement, in addition to providing a quality at-bat even when the results don't jump off the stat sheet.
For now, it seems likely that he'll play a minority of games, with Thomas' increased role, but Barrosa could find a way to carve out more playing time for himself if he can harness his contact-hitting ability at the major league level.
The Diamondbacks would ultimately like to see McCarthy find his swing again, and return to his excellent 2024 form. But for now, they'll hand an opportunity to one of their rising young players and a long-time member of the organization in Barrosa.

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled 24-year-old, 5-foot-6 outfielder Jorge Barrosa from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday as the accompanying roster move for sending down outfielder Jake McCarthy
elite defensive outfielder who provides switch-hitting flexibility to the Diamondbacks
Barrosa is batting .295/.362/.495 with three home runs
instinctive out in center field,” D-backs farm director Chris Slivka told Arizona Sports on Monday
“He has great bat-to-ball skills and we’re continuing to emphasize using the entire field to him
As he continues to get better using the opposite-field gap and tightens up the approach
I think there’s a lot to be excited about
I know he gets a lot of credit for his defense
but we still think he’s a pretty sound offensive player

The Diamondbacks optioned McCarthy on Monday
as he’s started the season struggling to make an impact offensively
the speedy McCarthy started 2025 0-for-24 and is 3-for-41 in the big leagues
Barrosa’s defensive versatility will allow the Diamondbacks to move him wherever needed
He joins an outfield unit with right fielder Corbin Carroll
center fielder Alek Thomas and platoon corner outfielder Randal Grichuk
Utility infielder Garrett Hampson can also play in the outfield
McCarthy is the only other outfielder on the 40-man roster
although Blaze Alexander has received reps out there for versatility
joining the team after Thomas suffered a hamstring strain during opening week
Barrosa doubled in his first plate appearance and played in eight games overall last year (3-for-17)

After playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League, Barrosa hit .320 in 11 major league spring training games. MLB Pipeline ranked him No
21 on the list of D-backs prospects coming into the season
He first joined the Diamondbacks in 2017 as a 16-year-old international free agent from Venezuela
Written by RotoWire Staff
Barrosa started in center field and went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 8-2 loss to Atlanta
Barrosa made his first start (second appearance) since being called up from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday
While primary center fielder Alek Thomas has hit well to start the season
including a small-sample 3-for-9 against lefties
the Diamondbacks remain reticent to use him against southpaws
The switch-hitting Barrosa will serve as the right-handed complement in center field
He had an .857 OPS over 105 plate appearances at Reno prior to his call-up
The longtime D’back prospect made his MLB debut
but his season was marred by injury and offensive ineffectiveness
Jorge Barrosa feels like he's been in the Arizona farm system forever
he won’t be entering his age 24 season until next season
Barrosa was signed as an international free in 2017
which is probably why it feels like he’s been in the system so long to me
since that is when I started covering the farm system for the ‘Pit
After a slow but steady rise through the system
Barrosa finally made his MLB debut in 2024 after he was called up on April 1st for a three game series against the Yankees
hitting a double for his first major league hit
He’d get sent back down when Randall Grichuk was activated off the injury list
Barrosa would land on the injury list himself
rehabbing with the ACL Dbacks before returning to action with the Aces
but this time would only be on the IL for about 11 days
Barrosa returned to the Major league level on September 1st
but would be optioned back to the Aces on September 6th
In 75 games at the AAA level Barrosa hit .270/.360/.421 which amounts to a slightly below average 98 wRC+
In the 9 games Barrosa spent rehabbing in the Arizona Complex League
Barrosa hit .176/.176/.294 which amounts to a 22 wRC+ and -1.8 Offense
Although he provided negative value on offense
it is worth noting that Barrosa’s defense (+0.8) and baserunning (+.2) was good enough to even out his WAR to make his value neutral at the MLB level
Barrosa still has his rookie status intact
which is probably the only other upside to his less than stellar 2024 season
Barrosa’s future is likely as a defense first fourth outfielder, but I’d say even that is up in the air, considering recent rumors
I’d expect Barrosa to once again split time between Arizona and Reno
As Barrosa was added to the 40-man roster in 2022
so 2025 will be a make or break year for the young outfielder

SCOTTSDALE — The Arizona Diamondbacks made a series of roster moves on Friday as they continue to narrow in on a 26-man team for Opening Day
The D-backs optioned left-handed pitcher Tommy Henry
versatile infielder Grae Kessinger and outfielder Jorge Barrosa to Triple-A Reno
Arizona also reassigned relievers Jeff Brigham
along with infielder Connor Kaiser and outfielder Cristian Pache to minor league camp
The camp roster is down to 40 players as the regular season begins on March 27
Barrosa represents the next line of defense for Arizona’s outfield as a stalwart defender who can play in all three spots
Barrosa looks the part of a valuable fourth outfielder for a team that already has five MLB-caliber outfielders on the roster to squeeze him out at this point
batting .320 with two doubles and a triple
He also threw out a base runner during Thursday’s game against the Athletics
Barrosa made his MLB debut last season
Injuries limited his playing time somewhat in the minors
nine home runs and 13 steals in 75 games with Reno
“Of course, you don’t want to get hurt, when you lose time, it’s a little tough,” Barrosa told Arizona Sports last week
My dream came true because I made my debut last year
Now I want to be able to stay in the big leagues.”
Barrosa and Pache both at least provide strong defensive options if injuries impact the D-backs’ outfield
Friday’s moves whittle down the club’s race for the backup utility infielder with Kessinger and Kaiser out of the mix
The Diamondbacks continue to evaluate non-roster invitees and spring standouts Ildemaro Vargas and Garrett Hampson for the role
Blaze Alexander is on the mend with an oblique strain
while top infield prospect Jordan Lawlar continues to showcase his value this spring
Arizona claimed Kessinger on waivers from the Houston Astros this winter
He’s a glove-first versatile infielder with 49 games of major league experience (.456 OPS)
Henry had an uphill — if not impossible — path to the fifth starter job with Brandon Pfaadt
Ryne Nelson and Jordan Montgomery vying for a rotation spot
The 27-year-old provides value as a depth option in the upper minors who has pitched in 35 MLB games since 2022
He struggled last year with a 7.04 ERA in 38.1 big league innings after showing promise in 2023 with a 4.15 ERA in 89 inning before suffering a season-ending injury
Henry pitched well down the stretch last year in Reno with a 3.18 ERA in his final 51 innings
Brigham and Morillo have been impressive this spring while competing for bullpen roles as non-roster invitees
one earned run and 12 strikeouts in Cactus League
Morillo has lit up the radar gun by consistently hitting triple digits while being able to locate
“He’s throwing 100 mph fastballs and he’s commanding it
How can you not fall in love with that?” manager Torey Lovullo said on Thursday
“We’re not adrenaline or velo junkies
We like guys that can throw it where they need to and back it up with secondary stuff
He’s still in the middle of his progression
he got a little bit of a late start to get into games
but he’s been really impressive.”
Castillo has been mostly sidelined this spring with an adductor strain after turning heads early in camp
but he’s resumed throwing bullpen and can be a left-handed option after the season starts
Barrosa, 24, was signed as an amateur international free agent back in 2017 at just 16 years old. Since then, it's been a long, arduous journey up the minor league system.
In 2023, Barrosa slashed an impressive .274/.394/.456 in Triple-A Reno. In 2024, an early injury to center fielder Alek Thomas earned Barrosa his first cup of coffee in the major leagues. Barrosa went 2-for-10 in his first trio of games, before being sent back down soon after.
From there, the outfielder struggled with his own health, spending multiple stints on the Injured List throughout the course of 2024.
He was called back up in September, but picked up just one base hit — a double — over seven at-bats in five games to open the month, before quickly being sent back to the minors.
But now, entering his third big league camp, Barrosa is finally fully healthy, and putting up some excellent at-bats in the Cactus League.
Diamondbacks On SI's Jack Sommers caught up with the switch-hitter in Las Vegas, where half the D-backs' squad had traveled to play the Athletics as a part of Big League Weekend, promoting the A's' hopeful future home city.
Barrosa said he's feeling good, and getting plenty of work in this spring.
"I feel great, man. I've been working on a lot of stuff, the cage with the coaches and all that, and it feels really good. ... Balls fly [in Las Vegas] too, so I'm pretty excited for it. Just enjoying the time here and enjoying the game," Barrosa said.
Manager Torey Lovullo touched on Barrosa's difficult journey through injuries in his postgame press conference on Sunday, and mentioned his current health as a noteworthy factor this spring.
"Healthy is probably the word that I think of when I think of him. A couple springs ago he came into camp and got hurt right away. Last year he got banged up again. So the fact that he's healthy, that's the one thing that stands out," Lovullo said.
"But he's a good baseball player. The at-bats have been really consistent. He's controlling the zone as well. You know, you look up there and he's sitting at .300 with limited at-bats with an [.878] OPS. He's having a good spring," the skipper continued.
And the results have been good for Barrosa so far. Over 26 Cactus League plate appearances, he's slashing an excellent .318/.423/.455, with a double, triple and stolen base.
Barrosa looks calm and calculated at the plate, and while his 5-foot-6 frame doesn't exactly lend him home run power, his excellent speed has allowed him to keep his slug at a respectable level, while also affording him impressive defensive capability in the outfield.
Lovullo said he's been giving Barrosa looks at all three outfield positions, but noted that his "best" position comes in center field, where range is the most valuable asset to a defender.
Barrosa said he's been growing as a result of playing with the other big league outfielders, but especially emphasized the importance of longtime outfield and first base coach Dave McKay.
"We're in a good group, and I've been around players like [Lourdes Gurriel Jr.] and all that stuff, and it's very important too because you learn from it," said Barrosa. "But [McKay] is the best in the business for me, you know what I mean? You learn a lot from him too, and you learn about the small details."
Barrosa said McKay places an emphasis on accountability. When asked if McKay was one of the best coaches he'd ever worked with, Barrosa's answer was an emphatic "yes sir."
For now, Barrosa doesn't look to be an Opening Day lock, but his excellent defense and disciplined approach are the markings of a successful member of the D-backs' organization.
With the ever-present threat of injury to Arizona's major league outfielders, and a clean bill of health himself, Barrosa could see his number called again soon in the majors.

PHOENIX -- Outfielder Jorge Barrosa was playing for Triple-A Reno on a road trip in Las Vegas on Sunday when he got the word to see manager Blake Lalli
Lalli told Barrosa that he was headed to Phoenix that night
but whether he was going to be added to the big league roster was still uncertain
D-backs outfielder Alek Thomas had felt tightness in left hamstring while grounding into a first-inning double play that day
and the team wasn’t sure if it would require a stint on the injured list
Barrosa packed up his stuff and flew to Phoenix
where he arrived late in the evening at his home in the Valley
“It was a tough night,” said Barrosa, the D-backs' No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline
Thomas had an MRI that revealed a strain in the hamstring
It was only then that Barrosa finally got “the call,” this time from Arizona farm director Shaun Larkin
Barrosa had never been called up to the big leagues
but he was part of the team’s taxi squad during the 2023 postseason
traveling with them in case of an injury as the D-backs made a surprise run to the World Series
“It was crazy man,” Barrosa said of last year’s playoff experience
“It’s kind of similar to what I feel right now
I was in Milwaukee [for the NL Wild Card Series]
Barrosa didn’t make the active roster during the postseason
but he didn’t have to wait long to see action this time around
with manager Torey Lovullo sending him up to pinch-hit in the ninth inning Monday night
Barrosa doubled off Victor González to secure his first big league hit and cap off a whirlwind 24-hour period
The experience of being around the big league clubhouse in October made the transition smoother this time around for Barrosa
You learn something small every day or something big
Venezuelan outfielder Jorge Barrosa has been in the Diamondbacks' system for quite some time, signing as an international free agent at just 16 years old, and began a slow climb up the minor league levels.
He bounced back and forth between lower levels for a few years, before finally making the leap to Double-A in 2022. He put up excellent numbers in Amarillo, earning himself the opportunity to begin the 2023 season in Triple-A with the Reno Aces.
With a full season's worth of opportunity with the Aces, Barrosa had his best season yet at age 22, slashing .274/.394/.456, with an .850 OPS and 13 homers.
The diminutive outfielder failed to make Arizona's Opening Day roster, beginning 2024 in Reno once again, but a mere four games into the regular season, starting center fielder Alek Thomas went down with a hamstring strain, and Barrosa was called up to make his major league debut.
He recorded a double in his first major league at-bat on April 1, and started the next two contests, going a mere 1-for-9 with an RBI single. Barrosa was then optioned back to Triple-A on April 4.
Two weeks later, he landed on Reno's 7-day Injured List with a hamstring injury of his own. He began a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League on May 23, and was then activated on May 31, but only made it as far as June 11 before landing back on the 7-day IL, this time with an unspecified injury.
After another rehab stint in the Complex League, Barrosa was activated by the Aces again on July 1, and seemed to pick up right where he left off, slashing .286/.359/.443 for the month. His August saw a dip in his average (.247), but he still posted a solid .763 OPS.
When MLB rosters expanded on September 1, Barrosa was one of Arizona's depth call-ups. He returned to major league action, but recorded only seven at-bats, going 1-for-7 with another double. He was returned to Reno on September 6, and never saw the field again for the D-backs.
He did hit fairly well with the Aces to close out his season, with five multi-hit games in his final 14 Triple-A contests, and capped his limited Triple-A slash at .266/.352/.420 with eight homers, good for a .772 OPS.
Barrosa hit only .176 in the majors, but wasn't heavily prone to strikeouts, and used his plus speed to stretch hits into extra bases at all levels. His solid production at the Triple-A level was consistent, his defense was generally positive, and he remains on Arizona's 40-man roster, protected from the Rule 5 draft.
At only 5'6'', Barrosa doesn't showcase a ton of power in his swing, but has a knack for solid contact, and his developing plate discipline and impressive speed make him a fit for Arizona's outfield.
He has a plus hit tool, takes walks, and isn't a strikeout machine. His value, however, will likely come from his ability to get on base and help create chaos, as well as providing excellent range in the outfield. He likely won't evolve into a power hitter, but is able to manufacture slug with his speed and baserunning.
If Alek Thomas continues to struggle in 2025, and the D-backs don't find a way to bring Randal Grichuk back there's a decent chance Barrosa sees more major league playing time, as long as he stays healthy. Coupled with his switch-hitting ability, the 23-year-old outfielder could easily become a bench piece for Arizona in 2025.

as loyal fans let out a cheer you only hear after a game-changing play at Greater Nevada Field
The 23-year-old is a magnetic Venezuelan who plays centerfield with joy and a passion you can feel from the stands
he captured this group like a fly ball in the gap
the roster announcement changed Barrosa as his dream of becoming a major-league ballplayer for the Arizona Diamondbacks became a reality
and extremely likable personality to Phoenix last week for his MLB debut
"I was excited… I was a little nervous," Barrosa said
it was like that's what I've been doing all my life."
"My mind was clear at that moment."
he thought back to learning to love baseball in a small town in Venezuela and his incredible journey to playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks at just 23 years old
"I was thinking about playing in Puerto Cabello
I say thanks to God and thanks to the people who helped me get here."

"The goal is not to be there," he said
"You want to stay there and play there for a long time."

Jorge Barrosa statistics and 2025 projection / Alex D'Agostino | Diamondbacks ON SIOutfielder Jorge Barrosa had his first MLB cup of coffee in 2024, getting the call-up once center fielder Alek Thomas went down with a hamstring injury in early April. Barrosa only had 18 plate appearances in eight games and recorded three base hits (a single and two doubles).
Once Barrosa returned to the minors, he struggled with injury himself. His poor 2024 with the Reno Aces wasn't an accurate representation of his abilities, as he spent two stints on the Injured List.
Still, he could see an increase in MLB playing time, depending on the health and results of those in front of him.
Barrosa is a mere 5-foot-6, 165 pounds. But he's a speedy switch hitter with a decent amount of pop for his size.
Certainly, he fits in well with the trend of somewhat undersized D-backs outfielders, and his ability to hit from both sides of the plate is an undeniable asset. He hasn't had enough opportunity to prove he can hit at the major league level, so his extremely modest projection might be attainable.
The real question is whether or not he'll be afforded that opportunity. Our playing time estimates expect him to see a larger chunk of plate appearances, and his rate statistics could jump higher based on his ability.
Due to Barrosa's speed and ability to make solid contact, there's a high chance he might turn plenty of outs into singles and singles into doubles. In 2023, he slashed .274/.394/.456, with a .850 OPS, 13 homers and 28 extra-base hits for the Aces.
Even with the up-down and suffering multiple injuries, he still hit a solid .270 and slugged .421 in 2024. Barrosa has the tools to be a productive contact hitter, but his power is sneaky, and his speed would make him a valuable asset to Arizona's brand of chaos.
Barrosa doesn't have to do much to outperform these rate statistics. He's been a consistent hitter every year at the minor league level. He knows how to get on base and he's fast enough to raise his average above what might be expected.
It's quite possible Barrosa doesn't see as much action as listed, which could hurt his production. But as far as rate stats are concerned, a lot of assumptions are being made in the projection.
Barrosa is a successful hitter in the minor leagues, but both Amarillo and Reno are offense-heavy environments. Major league pitching is an entirely different animal, and while he was able to use his speed to help up his slug in his first stint, Barrosa looked uncomfortable at the plate, and only managed a .176 average.
It's unfair to base everything on 18 plate appearances, but at only 23 years old, it's possible Barrosa is a ways off from being able to hit consistently at the highest level. As the quality of the pitching increases, the young outfielder could struggle heavily, especially if he isn't awarded more consistent plate appearances.
In all likelihood, it's hard to imagine Barrosa doing much more with his limited opportunity than what is projected here. While it's possible that his speed could award him a higher average and slug if he maintains an aggressive baserunning approach, that type of success won't be sustainable at the major league level.
It seems likely that this projection is reasonable for Barrosa, if he is able to get that many plate appearances. There's plenty of room for growth, but it would come as a welcome surprise if the switch-hitter contributed to the D-backs in a major way in 2025.
and things are once again being shaken up around the league
the Arizona Diamondbacks are being joined by two familiar faces in Jorge Barrosa and Slade Cecconi
likely the more well-known of the two for fans of the team
spent some significant time with Arizona earlier in the year in multiple stints
"I feel good right now," Cecconi told Arizona Diamondbacks ON SI's Jack Sommers
"I've really settled into the role in the bullpen recently
and the consistency of it have been much better...It is the first time I have really been in a consistent bullpen role
so I've taken each outing one at a time
learning from it and trying to get better."
Cecconi had been a starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks and was finding varying degrees of success
He would often be perfect through the lineup the first time before seemingly hitting a wall against batters the second time through
the D-backs pulled the trigger and moved Cecconi to a reliever role where he has found success
you have a lot of time to prepare for that first pitch of the game
Cecconi spoke extensively on the importance of 'routine' and how much it has altered his experience as a reliever
"I've been taking that pre-game work very seriously
so that I don't have to think when that phone rings
I can just go straight into my 12-15 pitch warmup routine that I've established."
Cecconi pitched to a 6.14 ERA in 73.1 IP with the big league club earlier in 2024
with a 275/.315/.962 slash line as a reliever
and was stretched to more than two innings multiple times
and has pitched much better since transitioning to a full time reliever role
and he has found his breaking ball as well
Especially off-speed coming out of the pen...The fastball command has always been there for me
and not leaving backed up breaking balls at the top of the zone coming out of the bullpen."
Speaking of Cecconi and his rolemanager Lovullo said "We feel like he's been throwing the ball well
There were times this year where it was a tough send down
We need somebody that can go multiple innings
Jorge Barrosa is a switch hitter who saw a small stint in the majors early this season
and a right hand bat that the team could certainly use for more options in the position player pool
Lovullo said "We like the outfield depth and the ability for him to move around
Versatility was the primary factor for us."
Barrosa's numbers are much more appealing
"I'm grateful and excited to compete." said the young outfielder
but we've got to come through and come back stronger."
Barrosa missed nearly two months with a strained hamstring
another part of the Diamondbacks' devastating injury woes in 2024
Part of the Diamondbacks' team mentality is in putting trust
This seems to have rubbed off heavily on Barrosa
and trusting in what they say." as the key factor in getting him back to the major leagues
and can add a young spark to the clubhouse
Cecconi and Barrosa are joining the Diamondbacks during one of the most important series of the year. They will be ready to face off against the Dodgers, fighting to work their way back into the series. Check out our game preview for today's game HERE

Alek Thomas and Jorge Barrosa of the Arizona Diamondbacks walk across the field before Game Two of the World Series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on October 28
PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Jorge Barrosa hopped on a flight from Las Vegas to Phoenix Sunday evening unsure whether his moment had finally arrived
D-backs center fielder Alek Thomas injured his hamstring in a game on Sunday
so Triple-A Reno manager Blake Lalli and bench coach Shawn Roof told Barrosa he was called to Arizona in case Thomas needed to go on the injured list
It was difficult for Barrosa to get any sleep at his place in town
as he was constantly checking his phone for an update
Thomas underwent imaging on his left hamstring on Monday
which showed what manager Torey Lovullo described as a “high” Grade 1 strain
and farm director Shaun Larkin alerted Barrosa hours before first pitch against the New York Yankees at Chase Field he’d been called up
I don’t know the emotions or what I feel,” Barrosa giddily said in dugout pregame
The 23-year-old from Venezuela told his wife and then his mother he had reached the major leagues
Barrosa has spent a lot of time around the major leaguers
He was in big league camp until March 10 when he was optioned to Reno and on the taxi squad during Arizona’s postseason run
it’s just crazy,” Barrosa said
“To learn something small everyday or something big … that helped me a lot.”
Barrosa called Thomas “his guy,” saying he was sad to hear about the injury but grateful for the opportunity to fill in
The 5-foot-5 switch hitter was not in Monday’s lineup against a right-handed pitcher with the left-handed Jake McCarthy sliding into right field and Corbin Carroll moving to center
But the Yankees will start southpaws on Tuesday and Wednesday
an opportunity to get Barrosa’s bat in there
Barrosa slashed .274/.394./456 last year with the Aces
hitting 13 home runs and stealing 15 bases
“He is well above average as a defender … he fearlessly practices his craft and goes out every single day to get better and I think that translates,” Lovullo said
“He is known as a very good defender but he’s also a pretty good hitter
I don’t want to undersell that side of it
He’ll get some chances in center field.”
Thomas was frustrated but not surprised by his diagnosis
saying he’s never been injured before
one he’s excited to see get a chance
“He can go get it in center field,” Thomas said
“I played with him a little bit and in Reno and I can see that there’s definitely something special about him … It’d be really cool to see him play.”
Barrosa said a successful debut would involve doing something
“The opportunity comes and I’m ready for it,” Barrosa said
I’m not gonna try to do too much more than what I’ve been doing
“Look at me...I can be...center field,” sung John Fogerty but not JJ Bleday
Bleday did an admirable job of trying to pose as a CFer in 2024
but the A’s path to increased success in 2025 and beyond involves moving Bleday over to a corner (if not dealt to another team)
If you don’t believe me and only recall some of the excellent plays Bleday made while generally butchering the position
Fangraphs had Bleday at a hideous -19 DRS putting him at an even more unsightly -30 DRS in his career 1,861 innings (the equivalent of about 207 games) at the position
With the exception of “arm” — and even that is mitigated by repeatedly poor decisions, like somtimes throwing to nowhere in particular — Bleday gets negative ratings on each and every metric used to compute his overall score
he is not able to overcome the shortcomings he brings to the table
All of which is to say that the A’s should be looking for a CFer in 2025 along with their need for upgrades at 3B and at the front of the rotation
How the A’s approach shopping for 2025 depends greatly on how they view Denzel Clarke
whom they hope will be the CFer of the future — ideally the near future
Clarke is a difficult prospect to project and it’s anybody’s guess how the A’s view him internally
Clarke brings elite athleticism to the equation and some of his struggles relate to the reality that he started playing baseball later than most of his peers
His 2024 season at AA Midland had many ups and those ups were electric
And he has only shone in his AFL performance so far
A strong start to his minor league season in 2025 could easily see him promoted to the big leagues during the 2025 season and his upside includes ample power
Clarke’s 2024 season was inconsistent with both ups and downs and some perplexing stretches where he either hit for power but didn’t walk or where he walked but didn’t slug
And he has always had a need to manage his K rate
something which goes a long way to predicting success or failure at the highest level
making this coming season somewhat of a “make or break” prospect year
If the A’s think Clarke is “the real deal” they will be more inclined to seek a solid one year stopgap in CF
but if they have a lot of doubts they will more likely seek a young cost controlled CFer who can compete for the long term job
If the A’s lean towards a player with several cost controlled years ahead of him
one possible target is the Diamondbacks’ Jorge Barrosa
and so the A’s would have to be convinced that his upside is higher than the average scout believes
Similar concerns were expressed around Ryan Sweeney
Is Barrosa another “tweener” or could he hold down an every day job
Barrosa’s strengths start with excellent CF defense
which is already a lot given that CF is a premium defensive position
as we saw with Cristian Pache it’s not enough on its own
But quality CF defense is part of Barrosa’s floor
and it’s appealing that he is a switch hitter
At 5’5” or 5’6” (depending on who you believe)
he is hard to pitch to and his walk rate is superb: 11.6% at AAA in 2024
with K rates generally hovering between 15%-18% throughout his MiLB career
His batting average has been typically around .270-.280 with an excellent OBP due to the high BB rate
The downside is that Barrosa does not hit for a lot of power (career .419 SLG in MiLB) and that sometimes portends doom in the big leagues
If Barrosa can’t slug enough to keep defenses honest and prevent pitchers from attacking the heart of the strike zone
all his MiLB accomplishments could produce slash lines like those from the Max Schuemann of today or the Adrian Cardenas of yesteryear
as a quality defender with some hitting strengths
Barrosa might be appealing as a young player with 6 cost controlled years ahead of him and who would not require too much in return
That’s if the A’s believe in him and don’t believe strongly in Clarke
He would make sense if the A’s think Clarke is going to be their future CFer
but won’t take firm hold of the position until 2026
Bader is no star but because of that he might be affordable and he might be amenable to a short-term deal to play in Sacramento
That’s hard to say because his career has been a bit like Clarke’s: consistently inconsistent
Defensively Bader has had 2 sensational seasons
rating at +15 DRS in CF in 2019 and again in 2021
Since then many of his metrics have remained solid (11.0 UZR/150 in 2022
2.2 UZR/150 in 2024) but his DRS has plummeted to
And even the UZR/150 numbers have declined steadily each year to where if the pattern persists he will drop into negative numbers in 2025
Bader has never been great but he’s serviceable
He is a career .242/.306/.392 hitter who has averaged 18 SB the past 3 seasons with around a 20% K rate
Given the double-whammy of being able to shift Bleday over to LF
a Bader signing would improve the outfield in the short term as well as leaving the door open for Clarke to grab the CF position from 2026 on
So there are two of many options the A’s have in their quest to improve the outfield for 2025
Or is there a different move you would like to see the A’s pursue — if so
please explain your ideas and your reasoning
And how do you see (or not see) Clarke fitting in to all this
Is he the next big thing along side Lawrence Butler for years or is he a likely bust the A’s had better not be planning around
because moving Bleday to LF takes away a spot that might be Thomas’ very soon
Lots to ponder during an otherwise slow baseball time..
The projections presented are a composite of the rate (percentage) stats from Steamer and ZiPS as published on FanGraphs

Further roster changes will impact the playing time and thus the WAR projection
but not the rate or percentage statistics presented
Jorge Barrosa has been in the D-backs organization since July 2017
While it took a while for him to move up the system
he has made steady progress over the past three seasons
The D-backs added him to the 40-man roster last offseason to protect him from the 2022 Rule 5 Draft
but he spent the entire 2023 season with Triple-A Reno
There he hit .295 with 13 home runs and nearly as many walks (80) as strikeouts (82)
he put up a 110 wRC+ with Reno and has earned an opportunity to compete for the fourth outfielder role
Barrosa currently ranks 15th on the Top 30 D-backs Prospects list entering the 2024 season
The expectation is he'll have a chance to compete for the fourth outfielder role
but lose the battle to Jake McCarthy to begin the season
He'd be the first outfielder brought up from Reno if there is an opening due to injuries or performances
D-backs general manager Mike Hazen stated previously that it's tough to evaluate hitters in the extreme environments of Amarillo and Reno whose offensive game isn't rooted in plate discipline
who has drawn 145 walks compared to 162 strikeouts over the last two seasons
That is a sample size of over 1000 plate appearances at the Double-A level or higher
Barrosa is projected to get 29 starts and total 117 plate appearances in his debut season
he's expected to put up a .236/.313/.356 triple slash with a 20.5% strikeout rate and a 9.5% walk rate
That accentuates the main strength and weakness in his prospect profile
Barrosa is very disciplined hitter for his age and generally makes a good amount of line drive contact
he is projected to have below-average power
his strengths align well with his home ballpark
which heavily inflates doubles and triples
It's not inconceivable that Barrosa gets more playing time than the projection gives
Based on the current construction of the roster
there is an argument that he better fits the fourth outfielder profile as a switch hitter who will bat right-handed vs
even with Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr
Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy do not have a strong enough track record at the plate that a poor performance could see them avoid getting demoted to Triple-A like last season
Additionally he can also provide coverage against right-handed pitchers
Not only could he cover right field against lefties
but also left field as well when Gurriel or Carroll needs a rest day
The main argument for this would be simply that Barrosa is completely overmatched against major league pitchers
It seems unlikely given the solid plate discipline numbers considering age and level
but the quality of pitches are significantly tougher than Amarillo and Reno
he might not be the first guy on the depth chart to bring up from Reno
Dominic Fletcher was brought up twice during the 2023 season over Barrosa
although you could make the argument he was far from ready
He'll need a very strong spring to crack the Opening Day roster and opportunities simply might not come by
It's unlikely considering the D-backs don't have a third reliable starter in the outfield and are mixing and matching to fill the gaps
Looking at Barrosa's Triple-A splits last season
he only hit two home runs in 150 PA but also put up an impressive .380 OBP with 23 walks and 24 strikeouts
The D-backs might want more impact in these games and could turn to other options
If the D-backs want a right-handed bat to face lefties as their fourth outfielder
Barrosa makes the most sense if they don't make any further additions to the outfield
With a strong track record of plate discipline and a good defensive outfield presence
he should earn opportunities to showcase his skills at the major league level
The D-backs may turn to options with more major league experience
with McCarthy holding 736 career PA and an OPS above .700 vs
he could very well make the Opening Day roster over McCarthy
The speedy outfielder hit well at Triple-A
getting on base and using his speed to swipe a handful of bases
Jorge Barrosa could enter Spring Training looking to secure one of the starting outfield spots
Barrosa hit .274/.3394/.456 with a .385 wOBA and 110 wRC+
Barrosa nearly matched his 16.3% strikeout rate with a 15.9% walk rate
His .182 isolated slugging percentage was a sizable 22-point uptick from his 2022 campaign
keep in mind that’s about the league average
he’s hit for about a league-average amount of power across the last two seasons
Barrosa could win a Gold Glove next season
He’s the best non-Druw Jones defender in the system and one of the fastest runners in the system
Lawlar may be the only one faster than him
who registered the tenth-highest sprint speed in baseball last season during his brief MLB stint
MLB Pipeline puts his glove as a 70-grade item
He doesn’t have a cannon on his right shoulder
but he can make throws from center field without any trouble
Barrosa projects similarly to Ender Inciarte
with little power but Gold Glove potential
and the potential to hit .300 consistently
If the Diamondbacks wanted to have the rangyest and best defensive outfield
starting Jorge Barrosa would be the best option
Even though Fletcher may have the inside track
the D-Backs did add Barrosa to the 40-man roster

Carroll is the very first player in the D-Backs’ franchise history to take home the award and is the first Snake to receive Rookie of the Year votes since Ender Inciarte finished 5th in ROY voting back in 2014
But the Diamondbacks have a handful of near-MLB-ready talents that could make a significant impact on their upcoming 2024 season
There’s a real chance the Diamondbacks have a second potential Rookie of the Year contender
they have some young guns who could receive a few votes for the award
That’s the kind of players I want to shine a spotlight on today
potential Diamondbacks rookies who could contend for Rookie of the Year next season
Some of these players have played in MLB this season but have yet to play enough to graduate their prospect status
Dominic Fletcher has the most Major League playing time of any Diamondback rookie we will look at today
He appeared in 28 MLB games with 102 plate appearances last season
But Fletcher has an upper hand on the third and final outfield spot as of right now
and I doubt many fans would object to him landing a starting spot to open next season
He hit .301/.350/.441 during this small sample size with a .340 wOBA and 113 wRC+
Fletcher’s 21.6% strikeout rate was slightly better than the league average but had a mediocre 6.9% walk rate
He also only hit two home runs with a sub-par .140 isolated slugging percentage
Fletcher spent most of his season at Triple-A Reno
His 12.6% walk rate looks good on paper but was roughly league average because of the new implementation of the ABS system
his 18.6% strikeout rate was significantly better than the average 21.8% K-rate in the PCL
but his .209 ISO was again better than average
Even though Fletcher only logged 219 innings in the outfield
He racked up +4 defensive runs saved and +2 outs above average
Although he registered a below-average sprint speed
He was in the 71st percentile of arm strength last season
Fletcher may not be the Diamondbacks’ best prospect
and he only hit and fielded well in less than 30 games
If he hit and fielded anything like he did last year
I’m sure I’m not the only person who thinks Jordan Lawlar could be a Rookie of the Year contender next season
The shortstop is one of the best prospects in baseball
and MLB Pipeline each rank Lawlar in the top ten on their top 100 prospects list
Lawlar got a brief taste of MLB pitching last season but should get an extended look in 2024
Lawlar spent most of the 2023 campaign at Double-A with a 16-game cameo at Triple-A mixed in too
who went yard 20 times with a .218 isolated slugging percentage and also stole 36 bases in 41 attempts
but we haven’t even discussed the most promising aspect of Lawlar’s season
There was concern heading into the 2023 season as to how Lawlar’s hit tool would develop
he also struck out in about a quarter of his plate appearances
It was even worse in the second half of the year
as he had a 27.8% K-rate after the All-Star break
But Lawlar lowered his strikeout rate to just 20.6% last year
he got better as the season went on and had a sub-20% K-rate in the second half (17.8%
Lawlar only appeared in 14 big league games and struck out 11 times with just four singles in 34 total plate appearances
as he posted +1 DRS and +2 OAA in less than 100 innings at shortstop
He projects as a great defensive shortstop with 30/30 potential
If the Diamondbacks gave Lawlar the starting shortstop role early into the year
there’s definitely the possibility he could win Rookie of the Year
It will be fun to see Lawlar get an extended look next season
Jorge Barrosa could enter Spring Training looking to secure one of the starting outfield spots
Which Arizona Diamondbacks could win the Rookie of the Year next season
These rankings are determined by Michael McDermott
in conjunction with the Inside the Diamondbacks staff
Summary: Jorge Barrosa was part of Mike Hazen's first international free agent class in 2017
His ascent up the minor league system has been slow and steady
as the power manifested more in the homer-happy environment of Amarillo
the D-backs added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft
He played the 2023 season in Triple-A Reno and put together solid numbers to earn an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster
2023 Recap: After getting added to the 40-man roster and getting into his first big league Spring Training
Barrosa suffered a hamstring injury in a game
That delayed his season to the end of April
he was able to optimize his launch angles and increase his percentage of contact in the 8-32° sweet spot for launch angles
Overall he finished with a .274/.394/.456 triple slash with 13 home runs and almost as many walks (80) as strikeouts (82) in the offense-inflating environment of the Pacific Coast League
While he was never a factor as a potential major league callup during the season
he's added his name to the list of candidates for 2024
2024 Expectations: With a successful year in Triple-A
Barrosa will get a chance to earn a fourth or fifth outfielder role out of spring
they can send him to Reno if an opportunity doesn't happen right away
He's likely behind Dominic Fletcher on the depth chart for outfield callups
but given the struggles with Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas at the plate last season that opportunity could happen early in the season
Barrosa should make his major league debut in 2024 and get his first at-bats as an injury replacement
Projection: Barrosa's limited power ceiling caps his potential impact at the major league level
As a switch hitter who's better from the left side of the plate
he should get plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills in Arizona or another team
He's an ideal fit for a fourth outfielder role where he can be a late-game pinch runner or defensive replacement
optioning outfielder Jorge Barrosa to Triple-A Reno
No other roster moves have been announced at the time of this writing
hitting a double to left center in his first career at-bat
he's made two starts in center field and he's 2-for-10 (.200) with an RBI
It's possible that Barrosa's 26-man spot goes to fellow outfielder Randal Grichuk
This has since been confirmed by Arizona Sports radio host John Gambadoro
Randal Grichuk expected to be called up for Arizona before tomorrow's game against Atlanta
Open roster spot after sending Jorge Barrosa to Triple A Reno
one-year deal with the D-backs in February to be an impact bat against left-handed pitching as both an outfielder and designated hitter
He underwent surgery on his right ankle in January to remove bone spurs
While he didn't recover in time to avoid a stint on the injured list
he was able to start playing rehab games with Reno when their regular season started
Grichuk would be activated for the first possible game he's eligible to return
left-handed pitching will improve their lineup
The D-backs are also dealing with an injury at the shortstop position
with Geraldo Perdomo leaving Wednesday's game with a right knee issue
manager Torey Lovullo said Perdomo was considered "day-to-day"
There may be more updates with this situation come Friday
when Lovullo addresses the media at Truist Park

The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned infielder Blaze Alexander and outfielder Jorge Barrosa to the Triple-A Reno Aces on Friday
Sam Clay and Michel Otanez and catcher Juan Centeno
Per MLB Pipeline
appeared in seven games with Reno last season (34 plate appearances)
four RBIs and four walks to eight strikeouts
after spending most of the year with the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles
During his time with the Double-A ballclub
10 stolen bases and 33 walks to 92 strikeouts
He averaged .306 and slugged .539 with a .927 OPS
played in 110 games for the Sod Poodles last season (510 plate appearances)
22 stolen bases and 65 walks to 80 strikeouts
He averaged .277 and posted an OBP of .374 with a .812 OPS
The D-backs’ roster shuffling is the latest for Arizona after the team assigned shortstop Jordan Lawlar and four others to the minor league camp on Sunday
Arizona’s roster in spring training now stands at 55 players
The D-backs have 20 games remaining on their spring training slate
beginning with a matchup against the Cincinnati Reds at 6:05 p.m
He was called up to replace Alek Thomas on the active roster
Thomas went to the 10-day Injured List due to a tweaked left hamstring
Barrosa was able to make his MLB debut Monday night when he pinch-hit for Jake McCarthy in the 9th inning
Barrosa laced a line drive to the left-field gap for a ground-rule double that proved to be his first career hit
it was a great scene for him to showcase what he can do with the bat in his hand
First MLB at bat for Jorge Barrosa is a ground rule double pic.twitter.com/WU3qtQ2OxB
the 23-year-old slashed .274/.394/.456 with 65 RBIs
The big factor for him is his eye at the plate as he rarely strikes out and walks a ton
His on-base ability with his elite speed makes for a good combination that the D-backs will look to take advantage of
He does all of this despite being only 5'5 and proves once again that size doesn't matter in the Big Leagues
Alek Thomas has paid close attention to Barrosa and considers him to be a very close friend or brother and is nothing but happy to see him make his MLB debut
I can see that there's definitely something special about him
He's like a little brother to me so it's going to be really cool to see him play."
saying "He's one of my favorite players to watch
He's a pretty good person and pretty good player."
saying "He carries a very competitive streak
He's going to help us win some baseball games
He fearlessly practices his craft..I think that translates
He's known as a very good defender but he's a pretty good hitter as well
I don't want to undersell that side of it
We feel very good about his ability to run things out
He'll get some chances out in centerfield as well."
He practices constantly on his routes and footwork
I shag and try to run after balls and with McKay here
I feel like that's a big part of my game."
ultimately his advice to Barrosa was just to "be prepared...have fun
be yourself." Lovullo did make sure to mention that Barrosa smells delicious and is very comfortable in his own skin
He came into my office and smelled delicious
I have his cologne all over me still."
Barrosa flew in Sunday night and had to wait through the night to find out whether or not he was going to get added to the active roster
That night turned out to be quite a sleepless night
I don't know the emotions of what I feel but it was great."
Barrosa made sure that he let his family know as soon as he knew he was getting the call
""It was my wife and then I called my mom right away
Barrosa is focused on just doing whatever he can to help the D-backs win whether that's pinch-running or playing an entire game
On what he considers a successful outing to be
it would be "If I do something small to help the team win
While Barrosa has improved quite a bit on his ability to play in the field
it's not the area that he's been most focused on improving or growing
It would be something that often goes unchecked by baseball players and that's the mental side
That's the aspect that he's felt he has undergone the biggest change for improvement in
you got the talent but you always got to be focused more
I would say put more on the work and not focus on the results
You're always working and the result is going to come."
Barrosa was apart of the backup squad for the 2023 D-backs roster as they played in the playoffs
While he wasn't actually a part of the team
and had to be ready on a moment's notice in case there was an injury and he had to be called up
Barrosa learned a lot from that from being around the guys and seeing how Major League ballgames work
The experience will last forever though as a cherished memory
I was in Milwaukee and it's something you don't expect but it's like things happen quick and you just got to enjoy."
The Diamondbacks optioned Barrosa to Triple-A Reno on Friday
The Diamondbacks decided to keep Tim Tawa around rather than Barrosa
who is 3-for-15 at the plate during his brief time in the majors this season
The expected tariff cost is significantly lower than the $4 billion to $5 billion crosstown rival General Motors estimates
which Ford attributes to its higher mix of U.S.-built vehicles

Randal Grichuk expected to be called up for Arizona before tomorrow’s game against Atlanta
— John Gambadoro (@Gambo987) April 5, 2024
Grichuk is a career .249 hitter with 191 home runs
He has 4 hits for 14 at-bats over four games with Reno this season
The D-backs signed Grichuk to a one-year contract that includes a mutual option for 2025 in February
“We are looking for every way possible to continue to shore up our roster,” general manager Mike Hazen told reporters after signing Grichuk
“We like him as a baseball player first and foremost
going out there in the outfield and he’s going to hit lefties for us
Gives (manager Torey Lovullo) more options to deploy his roster on a daily basis.”
Grichuk is coming off a 2023 season where he spent time with both the Colorado Rockies (64 games) and Los Angeles Angels (54)
The right-handed hitter appeared in 118 games
recorded 116 hits and 44 RBIs and slashed .267/.321/.459

Barrosa will begin the 2023 season in triple-A Reno
Barrosa is ranked the 15th-best prospect in the Arizona farm system
and slashed .278/.372/.439 for an OPS of .811
He showed glimpses of becoming an elite hitter
and he is already known for being a great outfielder who can cover a lot of ground
Barrosa is developing into a great all-around player
He spent most of his time in AA with the Sod Poodles in 2022
and looks to spend most of his time with the triple-A Aces or even the D-backs in 2023…
I talked about how Blaze Alexander might become your new favorite player in 2023
Diamondbacks fans will have to wait a little while for his emergence in the bigs
Blaze is ranked #11 in the D-backs farm system; A farm system that is as deep as the ocean
and slashed .301/.389/.540 for an OPS of .929
He has a cannon of an arm and a slick glove in the field
The sky is the limit for this 23-year-old kid
and if he gets the call to the bigs this season

Blaze Alexander #9 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting his first career homerun during the second inning in a game against the New York Yankees with Jorge Barrosa #1 at Chase Field on April 03
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks can make their September call-ups on Sunday
as major league rosters expand to 28 players — no longer 40
so typically one hitter and one pitcher will make their way to the big league club
top prospect Jordan Lawlar and pitching prospect Cristian Mena remain on the injured list with Triple-A Reno and will not be options at the start of September
There are layers to Arizona’s decisions, as Ketel Marte and Christian Walker are nearing a return from the 10-day injured list
but Lovullo said next week is more likely than this weekend to get one of his sluggers back
“They might be the one guy … That’s a little bit quicker than what I just got done telling you
but we have some names we’ve thrown around
both position player and pitcher-wise,” Lovullo said
Lovullo said he is looking for someone to fill in for multiple innings for coverage
This list won’t include Walker or Marte to highlight a handful of options in Triple-A Reno who could add depth to the club
then the D-backs would have to pluck someone currently on the MLB team
Barrosa made his MLB introduction in April
playing three games for the Diamondbacks after Thomas suffered a hamstring injury
Barrosa has also dealt with an injury-marred season having spent two stints on the IL with hamstring issues
The 23-year-old is Arizona’s No. 20 prospect on MLB Pipeline
How he can help: There are only two healthy position players on the 40-man roster currently playing in Reno
standout defensive outfielder with speed for pinch running
He has a lot of traits for a useful bench piece with the additional roster spot
He is slashing .276/.374/.438 with six homers and nine steals with the Aces (89 games)
The Diamondbacks optioned Alexander on Aug
20 to bring in veteran infielder Luis Guillorme to help fill in at second base for Marte
Alexander jumped out to a hot start after an impressive spring training
producing a .941 OPS in April while bringing an infectious energy to the clubhouse
His bat quickly cooled (.501 OPS in 39 games since May 1) as the league made its adjustments
He has crushed fastballs but struggled to hit offspeed
Alexander has spent most of the second half in the minor leagues
How he can help: Alexander has extreme platoon splits in the majors and minors
and with the Diamondbacks missing three quality right-handed batters
Alexander offers a bench bat to throw at southpaws
third base and second base with more success defensively than a error-filled first three weeks to start the season
Diaz is one of the last lines of defense in case the club deals with any more starting pitcher injuries
so perhaps that is where he is best served
he is throwing the ball very well in Reno and has been since his option on July 29
Diaz struck out 13 batters (22 whiffs) with one earned run in 6.2 innings
Diaz has a 2.82 ERA and 29 strikeouts with four walks in 22.1 innings
His MLB cup of coffee was mostly a positive experience. Diaz, who overcame overwhelming odds just to become a pro ball player
allowed two earned runs through 12 innings over his first two starts
Diaz made four appearances for the D-backs with a 4.05 ERA
The 23-year-old is Arizona’s top pitching prospect on MLB Pipeline
How he can help: Diaz has limited his walks lately and has intriguing tools to be a quality depth arm for a club that does not have as many reliable relievers as anticipated
Diaz can ramp up the fastball to the upper 90s mph
and his slider has devastated Triple-A bats
There’s just the risk of losing him as starting depth if he does not stay stretched out
Arizona also has lefties Tommy Henry and Blake Walston as starting depth on the 40-man roster
Cecconi moved into a bullpen role starting in the middle of July after his tendency to get through the opposing order very effectively the first time (.427 opposing OPS) before falling off (1.178 OPS the second time through)
The D-backs relied on the 25-year-old to start games due to injuries over the first half of the season
and he had a 6.14 ERA before getting sent down and changing roles
He has spent most of the second half in Reno
where he has 27 strikeouts and five walks in relief for the Aces
The D-backs called him up briefly at the end of July
although he allowed multiple runs in consecutive relief appearances and was sent back down
How he can help: Cecconi can give Arizona multiple innings
his stuff can ramp up to an upper 90s fastball with the slider
Cecconi has exciting tools to work with despite his lack of consistency this season
The veteran McGough only has 29 MLB innings this year but with a grisly 6.83 ERA and 6.10 FIP
although he has allowed five earned runs in his last 2.1 innings
How he can help: McGough can give the D-backs multiple innings in low-leverage situations
The Diamondbacks also have Humberto Castellanos and Logan Allen pitching in Reno

2018 Season Summary: Barrosa saw his first action of pro ball when the Dominican Summer League opened up
getting the starting CF job on the top DSL team for the Diamondbacks
He put up solid numbers there with a .299/.402/.412 slash in 240 PA
He put up solid plate discipline numbers with a 25/34 BB/K ratio and successful on 34 of 40 stolen base attempts
where he saw a bit of action with both the AZL Dbacks and Missoula Osprey
The sample size at those two stops isn’t enough to draw conclusions
but he struggled in the few games he saw there
the season was a net positive because he displayed solid OBP skills and baserunning instincts in his DSL stop
Upside: Barrosa has the tools to be a potential everyday center fielder and top of the order hitter
His DSL numbers suggest a potential high OBP
high SB total with strong baserunning numbers
The speed should also translate to the field where he should be a strong glove in Chase’s ginormous outfield dimensions
The big outfield should also help his hitting where balls hit in the gaps allow him to turn singles into doubles or triples
Risk: Barrosa has only 67 plate appearances in the states
so it’s also too early to project what type of prospect he’ll ultimately develop into
There have been toolsy prospects similar to him that flamed out in the farm system
although Barrosa is on the right side of the age curve
The rate stats in the states went down as the competition increased
so he’ll likely be starting in rookie ball in 2019
Likely 2019 Assignment: I believe Barrosa will start 2019 in extended Spring Training to open things up
he could see a promotion to Hillsboro late in the minor league season
When the Victoria De Malate high-rise topped off in Manila last March
there was much more going on beyond the completion of another skyscraper
Located in the heart of the bustling metropolis, Victoria De Malate is the flagship project of New San Jose Builders
a Quadruple A-rated construction and real estate company and one of the country’s industry leaders
Driven by a dedication to reduce the extreme housing backlog that plagues the Philippines
New San Jose Builders Executive Vice President and COO Leo Barrosa says the company works closely with the Philippines government in that regard
“We’re in construction and real estate development at the same time,” he says
“So we have vacant land all over the country
which we offer the government for co-development of housing.”
The queue for housing is around six million
so we want to help solve that problem and we have the means to do it
New San Jose’s government associations run deep
is currently the Secretary of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development in the Philippines
and the company is firmly on board with the government’s Pambansang Pabahay Para Sa Pilipino Housing Program (4PH)
which aims to address the country’s six million-plus housing backlog by building one million houses per year for the next six years
“Mr Acuzar actually coined that program,” Barrosa says
“The queue for housing is around six million
so we want to help solve that problem and we have the means to do it.”
he’d just come from a 14-year stint at Ernst & Young Philippines
which meant focusing on the adoption of the latest technology to become more effective and efficient in the way we work,” he says
so our buyers have a convenient way to pay their amortization
Barrosa was also asked to head two groups as part of his new role
“I was put in charge of real estate and construction
which made it possible to streamline some of the company’s processes,” he says
“Rather than having to get approval from the head of construction and then the head of real estate
thereby making it faster and easier for our buyers.”
New San Jose’s five-year plan includes participating in the government’s 4PH program by releasing land for government housing projects and then participating in the construction
New San Jose is in the business of building cities
we want to help decongest the Philippines,” he says
“We’re contemplating replicating the Bonifacio Global City of Metro Manila in the north and the south of the country.”
One of the secrets to New San Jose’s success is the fact that it’s a vertically and horizontally integrated company that keeps much of its resources in-house
“We’re a fully equipped construction company
moving with the times in adapting the latest construction technologies”
New San Jose has veered toward projects that allow it to harness these advantages
“Most prefab interior walls we use in our projects are manufactured by us,” he says
“We’re now also capable of doing prefab exterior walls
We’re continuously looking at the latest innovations in terms of how quickly we can finish a building.”
One upcoming development is the advent of prefab stairs
we’re trying to deliver easily installed stairs
Just bring them on site and they’re ready to put in place,” he says
There’s also a plan to centralize New San Jose’s metalworking operations
all prefab metal work can be done in one location and delivered to different sites,” Barrosa says
“This way you lessen inventory costs and manpower allocated on a per site basis.”
Also helping New San Jose achieve its lofty ambitions is the company’s close relationship with the banks
and they were able to help us bear the burden brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic
and they were able to help us bear the burden brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he says
“It helped us weather the effects of the pandemic
Managing finances is what crippled many companies at that time
and our bank relationships helped us avoid that.”
And so it is that New San Jose exists today to help realize its Founder’s vision
“He wanted us to help each and every Filipino have a home,” Barrosa says

while not as explosive or toolsy as Carroll
has a lot of positive attributes similar to Carroll that give him some breakout potential for 2022
Barrosa is a 21-year-old switch-hitter originally signed out of Venezuela in 2017 by the Diamondbacks
His offensive calling card is his premium contact ability/plate discipline combo
showing good routes and the ability to cover ground quickly
though his lack of power so far has been apparent
His defensive prowess at a premium position is a boost to his overall profile even in terms of fantasy
as it will continue to earn him playing time
which likely contributed to Barrosa’s reduction in power
Though minor league stolen base totals are notoriously unreliable for projecting future steals
his 74% success rate at High-A seems to validate his high base running IQ
the speed he shows in the field instills confidence in his stolen base efficiency and totals as sustainable moving forward (see the clip below)
Watch how much ground #Dbacks CF prospect Jorge Barrosa covers to make this catch at the wall for Brandon Pfaadt
He also stole 29 bases in 2021. Dude can scoot! 🛴 pic.twitter.com/ys0ftq7gfT
— Doug Otto (@hdouglasotto) February 28, 2022
Barrosa’s plate discipline skills may be the most impressive aspect of his game at present
he nearly doubled his walk rate while striking out less and maintaining an excellent contact rate
While he could still stand to walk a bit more
his strikeout rate was almost 10 percentage points lower than the High-A average (26.6%) and his contact rates were 10 percentage points higher than the High-A average (68.9%)
indicating the potential for a plus hit tool
Another positive development upon his promotion to High-A was his reduction in ground balls to achieve a more balanced batted-ball profile. Despite lofting the ball more, Barrosa’s home run per fly ball rate was cut in half to a paltry 5.3%. This was likely a result of his home park environment at Hillsboro, which sees 24% fewer home runs on average compared to other parks
it’s difficult to know how hard he really hits the ball
this data suggests that his home run total at High-A was artificially deflated and that he may have a good amount of power yet untapped
Jorge Barrosa pulls his yard card pic.twitter.com/6AVD8zBYtp
— Hillsboro Hops (with a new hashtag) (@HillsboroHops) July 18, 2021
If he can continue to hit the ball in the air at the rate he showed at High-A while maintaining quality plate discipline and contact skills
he could stand to get the most out of his power at AA
The jump to AA will of course be a tough one
and it’s very possible he won’t get to his power as much as I am hoping against the more advanced pitchers he will face
But his contact skills and the fact that he performed very well despite his age gives me confidence that he can continue to develop into a fantasy-relevant player
I don’t think a 20/20 season or even a promotion to AAA as a 21-year-old is out of reach for Barrosa in 2022
he should be targeted in all dynasty formats with at least 150-200 prospects rostered

a 24-year-old with speed and elite defensive skills
hitting .295 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 21 games
His defensive prowess and switch-hitting ability add depth to the D-backs' outfield
McCarthy was sent down after struggling significantly to start the season
reflecting a need for offensive consistency among the team's outfielders
Barrosa's performance will be closely monitored as he adjusts to major league play
with the potential to solidify his role in the D-backs’ outfield
His ability to demonstrate both offensive and defensive capability could impact the team's lineup configurations moving forward
The call-up of Jorge Barrosa signals the Diamondbacks' commitment to improving team performance while seeking better production from their outfield players
