UK startup Global Airlines’s A380-841, registered 9H-GLOBL and operated by Portuguese wet least specialist Hi Fly, made aviation history on 17 January. The flight from Dresden in Germany to Beja Airport in Alentejo marked the second time the world’s largest commercial carrier has ever landed in Portugal.
The aircraft, which was previously owned by China Southern Airlines and had been undergoing “heavy” maintenance at Elbe Flugzeugwerke, took off from Dresden on Friday before flying the three-hour, 1,240 nautical miles to Beja Airport.Commander Carlos Mirpuri, Vice-Chairmain of the Hi Fly Group led the flight having previously flown the aircraft from Mojave Desert Airport in California to Prestwick in Scotland in May last year and from Prestwick to Dresden in October.
He described the A380 as a “technological marvel” that nothing compares to. “Despite its impressive size, it’s as responsive as a smaller Airbus and is an absolute delight to fly,” he said.
The aircraft will now undergo final maintenance touches ahead of its planned integration into Global Airlines’ commercial operations.
While a confirmed start date for commercial operations has yet to be announced, James Asquith, CEO and founder of Global Airlines has indicated plans to officially launch in 2025 (having delayed the original 2024 start date). However, the airline has yet to secure an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the UK Civil Aviation Authority – a critical step for commercial operations – and no details have been given as to when this is expected.
The arrival of the aircraft at Beja marks the second ever time the aircraft type has landed in Portugal. The first occasion was in 2018, when Hi Fly’s A380 9H-MIP arrived, showcasing the Mirpuri Foundation’s environmental campaign “Save the Coral Reefs.”
On average an A380 requires a runway length of about 9,000 to 10,000 feet, but a crucial aspect determining the runway length being the weight of the aircraft. When fully loaded with passengers, cargo and fuel the aircraft can weigh up to 1.2 million pounds, necessitating a longer runway for a safe landing and take-off. Other factors include airport elevation and weather conditions. The runway at Beja is more than 11,000 ft.
Operated by Vinci Airports, Beja Airport is located 170km south of Lisbon and serves primarily as a dedicated business aviation hub. It is also one of the first ten airports in the world to achieve Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.

MESA has received the license to construct its second hangar at Beja Airport, tripling its capacity to serve clients. The total investment in this new project amounts to 60 million euros, encompassing infrastructure, equipment and the training of new technicians
A primary focus for the sustainable development of Beja Airport has been on aero-industrial activities, including aircraft maintenance, recycling, expanded logistics infrastructure, enhanced cargo terminal capacity, and specialized air cargo operations supported by connections to the Port of Sines.
Other updates include business and private aviation catering to niche markets, such as developments along the Alentejo coast, as well as outbound tourist operations supported by charter flights.
ANA consistently collaborates with the region, actively participating in annual regional consultative councils to foster dialogue and cooperation. This collaborative approach extends to supporting initiatives such as MESA’s development at BYJ.
The new facilities, which will span 11,000 square meters, will be located adjacent to the current hangar and are designed to accommodate all aircraft from the Airbus family. The expanded infrastructure will enhance MESA’s ability to provide services like base and line maintenance, cabin interior upgrades and modifications, engine and landing gear replacement, hydraulics tests, defect correction, SBs, ADs, MPD and Out of Phase Tasks Modifications, engine borescope inspections, and more.
The formal agreement for the new hangar was signed on in the presence of key representatives from both ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal and MESA.

According to ECO, ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal recently signed a license with Mesa, part of the Hi Fly group, to build a second hangar at Beja Airport, in an investment of 60 million euros.
In a joint statement, ANA and the Board revealed that this new investment will allow “tripling maintenance capacity, reinforcing the airport’s role as a hub for aerospace and industrial development in Europe”.
Mesa's new 11,000 square meter maintenance hangar will be built next to the company's current facilities and will allow maintenance of all aircraft in the Airbus family, the statement reads.
The Bureau “will reinforce its capacity to provide services, including heavy and online maintenance, interior modernisation, engine and landing gear replacement, hydraulic tests, fault correction and baroscopic engine inspections”, specified the company of the Hi Fly group.
ANA, owned by Vinci Airports, highlighted that “the growth of an airport requires strategic planning adjusted to its market potential”.
“In the case of Beja, the focus has been on developing aero-industrial activities, such as aircraft maintenance, recycling and specialised air cargo operations”, especially because the airport benefits “from the connection to the Port of Sines and the reinforcement of the logistics infrastructure and cargo terminal”.
Other strategic segments have been “business and private aviation and charter tourist flights, especially in supporting niche markets, such as tourism and real estate projects on the Alentejo coast”, they added.
ANA also stated that “the joint work” carried out with the region has been “essential for this development” of the airport, namely through support for “businesses and activities, such as the growth of the Board” in this infrastructure, which results from the civil use of Air Base No. 11 in Beja.
According to the statement released, the agreement was signed on 3 December 2024, in the presence of representatives from ANA — Aeroportos de Portugal and MESA.
“The signing of this license represents an important step for the growth of Beja Airport, reinforcing ANA|Vinci Airports’ commitment to the development of the regions where it operates,” said ANA CEO Thierry Ligonnière, quoted in the statement.
Mesa's CEO, David Cruz, considered that this step “marks a new phase” for the company, which, since the opening of the first hangar at Beja Airport, in 2021, has “registered solid growth”.
“With this second hangar, we will triple our capacity and continue to offer excellent services to our customers”, stressed the manager.

Aircraft handling services provider Safeport successfully assisted Global Airlines Airbus A380-841, registered 9H-GLOBL, as it landed at Beja Airport, Portugal.
This marks the second time Safeport has provided ground support for the iconic Airbus A380 at Beja, following its first historic involvement in 2018 with Hi Fly’s Airbus A380, 9H-MIP.
The Global Airlines Airbus A380, ferried by Hi Fly, arrived in Beja from Dresden, Germany.
Safeport’s team was responsible for all ground handling services, including providing Ground Support Equipment (GSE), aircraft towing, potable water, lavatory service, aircraft cleaning and comprehensive airport logistics. These services are vital for ensuring the smooth and efficient arrival of such a massive aircraft, with operations carried out seamlessly and safely.
Safeport says this event highlights its continued leadership in handling the largest passenger aircraft in the world. The successful management of this remarkable plane underscores Safeport’s ability to oversee large-scale operations.
Having previously supported the Hi Fly Airbus A380 in 2018, Safeport continues to demonstrate its expertise in assisting these exceptional machines with precision and care.
The 2018 arrival of Hi Fly’s A380 9H MIP, dedicated to the “Save the Coral Reefs” campaign by the Mirpuri Foundation, attracted hundreds of spectators to Beja Airport and marked a significant moment in aviation history.
Safeport says its team has built a track record in providing world-class ground handling services for a wide range of aircraft, from private jets to the largest commercial airliners. The company’s commitment to excellence ensures every operation runs smoothly, regardless of the size or complexity of the aircraft involved, the company says.

Under the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) banner, the latest development from Mercan Properties Group represents an investment of 16.8 million euros and will generate 31 more jobs, in addition to the approximately one hundred created during the construction period.
This new 4-star hotel in Alentejo, with a gross construction area of 7,125 m², is the result of an urban rehabilitation project that preserved the original façade of the existing building, in keeping with the characteristic layout of Beja, including a work by the acclaimed artist Vhils, which will pay homage to the Alentejo region.

“We have been very well received in the Alentejo, so we are very excited about the opening of the Holiday Inn Beja. Beja leaders in eastern Sudan met with Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan this week to discuss their initiative to reach peace between the various communities in the region
Battles between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support forces (RSF) in western El Gedaref subsided in the past few days
The training of new recruits to fight alongside the SAF continues in military camps in Eritrea
SAF commander and president of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council
met with a delegation of the Beja Initiative for Peaceful Coexistence in Port Sudan on Wednesday
together with Red Sea state and El Gedaref
The bloody tribal conflicts led to the death and injury of hundreds and caused material losses estimated at billions of pounds
According to the Sovereignty Council’s press bureau
El Burhan instructed the three eastern Sudanese state institutions to adopt the Beja Initiative and support the process in coordination with the Sudanese Peace Commission and the Ministry of Federal Governance
He called for the expansion of the initiative to include all communities in the region
El Burhan directed the damage assessment committees in the three states to start their work and calculate the total costs of the losses
The Sudanese High Committee for Compensation
has to be activated and prepare for the first compensation payments
the Beja Initiative for Peaceful Coexistence organised two workshops in Arkawit in Red Sea state
“One workshop discussed the rehabilitation and compensation for those affected by the violence in the region
and the other one tackled governance and administration in eastern Sudan,” Hamad Karrar
“This workshop recommended stabilising federal rule in eastern Sudan
similar to the Blue Nile and Darfur regions.”
As for the workshop on rehabilitation and compensation
the attending Beja nazirs* called for the establishment of a fund to redress material damages
Judicial committees and chambers of commerce will decide on the final claims, Karrar explained and added that “well-known businessman Ashraf El Cardinal** already agreed to pay a part of the compensation to those affected”
Other recommendations include the development of programmes to sustain peaceful coexistence
involve young people in community peace projects
develop regulations for rehabilitation and compensation
a presidential decree to assign an official to follow up on the initiative
and activate the High Committee for Compensation that should include Beja nazirs
El Burhan urged the initiative’s general conference be expedited
“The initiative’s general conference will be held after we have held conferences in each of the three eastern Sudanese states.”
The High Council of Beja Nazirs and Independent Chieftains-Adarob wing rejected the Beja Initiative in a statement yesterday
calling the initiative “an attempt to ignite the fire of strife in the East under the supervision of certain security and political leaders”
the initiative “is working at the behest of some Islamists in the security services and directing the Peace Commission to pass the deal”
It can be considered as “an attempt to block the way for the eastern Sudanese to obtain their historical rights and to mislead them to achieve political gains”
Sudanese activists on social media called on the government “to form an impartial and transparent judicial investigation committee to investigate the tribal violence in the past years
to formally indict those responsible for creating strife and hate speech
and to form special courts to look into lists of those accused in criminal cases”
They also called for the formation of community committees that should decide on compensation for the victims
including the Eastern Sudan Liberation Forces under the leadership of Ibrahim Abdallah (better known as Ibrahim Dunya)
the United Popular Front for Liberation and Justice led by El Amin Daoud
the Beja National Congress headed by Mousa Mohamed Ahmed
and forces supervised by religious leader Suleiman Beitai
head of the Hamashkoreib Quran schools in Kassala
All these groups post calls on social media to recruit new forces to enrol in training camps
the Eastern Sudan Liberation Forces held its first conference and posted the recommendations on its Facebook page
The group will “not allow destabilisation to happen in eastern Sudan
which represents a refuge for all people affected by the scourge of war”
It will “continue the struggle by all means to free the people of eastern Sudan from political
social and cultural marginalisation and persecution”
Military sources reported that El Fao has been witnessing “a cautious calm” for days now
under control of the SAF has recently been the scene of skirmishes between army forces
The sources added that drones continue to target various areas in El Gedaref
** El Cardinal was sanctioned by the US Department of State in 2019, and his company Nabah Ltd in 2020 for corruption and bribery involving senior South Sudanese government officials
People living in Agig and Tokar in southeastern part of Red Sea state previously rejected investments of El Cardinal Companies along the Red Sea coast
demanding to be consulted first and be allocated development projects in the areas

The facilities of the Food Bank Against Hunger (BACF) in Beja were robbed early this morning
Speaking to Lusa, the head of BACF in Beja
lamented that the institution was now left “without olive oil to deliver to the approximately four thousand people who receive support every month”

According to the president of BACF in Beja

“found that the back door had been broken into and that around 600 litres of olive oil
José Tadeu Freitas highlighted that the stolen oil had recently been donated by two companies in the region and was still boxed
the product was valued at five thousand euros
“It is an expensive and much-needed product because it is one of the main seasonings in the Alentejo and oil is not
Noting that the Food Bank ran out of olive oil
the baskets to be delivered to the families served
“The oil they stole will certainly go to the market and must already be being sold somewhere,” he said
the robbers would have used the “supermarket-type carts” that the institution has in its facilities to transport the oil between the warehouse and a vehicle
