Metrics details
After earning a medical degree from the University of Lisbon
Benedita performed her PhD work with Maria de Sousa in Glasgow
where she explored the regulatory function of T lymphocytes in immune responses
She then moved to the Medical School of Nova University
where she was appointed Professor of Immunology
Benedita hypothesized the existence of regulatory mechanisms that maintain lymphocyte numbers
laying down the foundations for her future work on T cell homeostasis
Benedita moved to the Necker–Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris
where she made major contributions to the understanding of T cell physiology
Benedita interacted with phenomenal immunologists and postulated the existence of peripheral T cell tolerance mechanisms
the dominant theory indicated that T cell tolerance was solely defined in the thymus
during the differentiation of immature T cell precursors
she joined forces with Harald von Boehmer at the Basel Institute of Immunology
to investigate whether mature T cells can become tolerized in the periphery
the efforts of Benedita and Harald culminated with the demonstration that peripheral tolerance to self-antigens occurs through the elimination of self-reactive T cells and through T cell clonal anergy
This seminal work paved the way for multiple studies on peripheral T cell tolerance and had important implications for autoimmune disease research

to attend the Kick-Off of the Walk&Talk Arts Biennial
a project established in 2011 as an annual July event – but which now promises a more (!) long-lasting
this made the experience even more (sensory and) familiar with the outlook and expectations of the Biennial’s programme
to be held for the first time between September and November 2025
These three days mirrored a bit of what they promise to do in the coming year – rather than the two weeks of the Festival
will have a different time span: two months of decreased intensity and extraversion (it is worth mentioning the need to relocate it outside of the high season)
New ideas may emerge from these interactions
but the web is ruptured and generates heterogeneous series
evolving autonomously following their vanishing lines – which can always be rebuilt
This issue of cultural institutionalisation through a rhizome-web is extremely important for the Biennial’s cohesion
according to Jesse James – and the University’s example could act as a prelude to this endeavour
of fertilising and articulating with other institutions and entities that work ‘from’ the Island
willingness and conditions to reinstate artistic teaching at the University of the Azores
This marginal and peripheral condition is where Walk&Talk acknowledges its abundance
Back to the rhizome: this is also built on failures
reversals and only occasionally many certainties
Errancy is an integral component in processes which are not based on any structural or generative model
in processes unconstrained by productivity outputs
and this is another vital point of the Biennial which they were determined to emphasise
Fatima Bintou Rassoul Sy addressed this question on the launch day by sharing a popular South African expression (and philosophy): ‘Angazi
usually uttered at the beginning of an answer: ‘How do I find my way to the beach
but I’m sure you’ll get there if you keep going’
The respondent is unsure of what they know; or perhaps they are certain
but do not know how to say it; or else they know
This is essentially an expression that asserts the importance of experience
improvisation and imagination as knowledge forms in their own right
these are also ways of taking part and making culture out of leisure
On this subject, it is worth mentioning Vaga – Espaço de Arte e Conhecimento and home of the Walk&Talk Biennial, as well as Associação Anda&Fala, an extension of the event when the Biennial is not running, but which is permanently involved with communities in the cultural sphere, as well as on a daily basis. They showed us the exhibition Corpos Magmáticos, from the New Wave Prize[8]
curated by Marta Espiridião and featuring the work of Isabel Medeiros
but who intermittently live between the islands and the mainland (Lisbon and Berlin)
something that Joana Albuquerque ends up referring to
as Um pau de dois bicos (a double-edged sword)
they worked on a sort of communal exchange with the island
The volcano became the central theme – the very entrance to the exhibition took place through a sensory experience that simulated a crater
Sofia Rocha mimics the volcano’s digestive systems
Isabel Medeiros works on memory and the processes involved in its preservation
she understood that she needed to explore glass work – and from there she tried to encapsulate volcanic stones and old photographs -
illustrating the meta-material clash of glass’s inability to support stone; as well as the proximity between conceptual and material memories
Joana Albuquerque shows three works centred around the conflicting feelings between identity
she cuts out large silhouettes that replicate the spaces occupied by resting bodies in the Pesqueiro area – a place central to both the Island and the Biennial
stressing the importance of stillness over productivity
it does not seem as if I have been outlining the essential features of an Art Biennial
but of a socio-ecological project of participatory regeneration through arts and culture
and I truly believe that this is what Walk&Talk intends as a Biennial
most of the interventions were geared towards the city walls (and the walls of the museum and gallery)
the relationship with the territory has grown more rooted
the curatorial proposal is withdrawing from material exclusiveness to embrace a set of artistic-cultural
inter-relational exercises between the different agencies that make up the Azorean identities

She is currently doing her PhD in Artistic Studies - Art and Mediations at the same institution
centred on the potential for societal and collective liberation around transgressive (artistic) practices such as graffiti and political graffiti
she also participates in the making of documentaries and organises workshops on practice and thought for young people

The 2014 Hiatus Vinho Verde comes from an in-between region in Portugal called "Entre-Douro-e-Minho."
stand with longtime friend and collaborator Francisco Silva at the Casa da Lage vineyards
The 2014 Hiatus Vinho Verde sells for $9.99 at Steve's
There will be two tastings this weekend at the stores on University Avenue and Junction Road
This 2014 Hiatus Vinho Verde is made on an estate in Portugal owned by Madisonian Benedita Sampaio e Mello
Benedita Sampaio e Mello was raised in Lisbon and recently inherited her family estate in Portugal
Her 2014 Hiatus Vinho Verde is now available at Steve's
has been in Benedita Sampaio e Mello's family for generations
her relatives have produced wine from five regional white grapes
bottled as a light and refreshing vinho verde
has become available for the first time in Madison
Sampaio e Mello lives on Madison's west side for most of the year
but spends summers and Christmas in Portugal
Working with Robert Whitlock's Import Wines in Middleton, Sampaio e Mello brought 100 cases of her newly branded 2014 Hiatus Vinho Verde into the Madison market
Most of them are available at Steve's on University Avenue for $9.99
with some at the Steve's on Junction Road and "by the glass" pours at Tornado Steakhouse and
The winery's production is "very small," according to Sampaio e Mello
producing only 15,000 bottles (1,250 cases) of white wine this year
It can produce up to 60,000 liters of wine
"My only objective is that the vineyards or the wine gives me enough money to keep the house
to repair the roof when needed," said Sampaio e Mello
Sampaio e Mello was raised in Lisbon, Portgual. She came to Madison with her husband, Antonio Sampaio e Mello
in 1995 when he took a position as a finance professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
The estate measures 12 hectares (about 30 acres) and has been passed from woman to woman
from Sampaio e Mello's great-grandmother to her grandmother and her aunt
"My grandmother gave it to my aunt thinking a woman should have something of her own
which was the 1940s and '50s," said Sampaio e Mello
"I have people who have been working with my family for generations
The vines grow in a soil that's "soft and almost white, like dust," located in a region called "Entre-Douro-e-Minho." The land is south of the coastal Minho and west of the mountainous Douro (DOO-roh), a region known mostly for Port that has been growing in prestige
Benedita's husband Antonio has his own vineyards there in Douro
where he makes "a fabulous red and very good olive oil." His wine is not available in Madison yet
but he too travels back and forth to oversee his vines
The Baião estate grows five white grapes: avesso
but they don't make it to the United States
The people there like that; they grew up on that
Sampaio e Mello chose to brand her wine "Hiatus" (not to be confused with Hiatus Cellars, a California wine project) because she wanted a name that evoked a pause
something to encourage people to "stop and smell the roses
"This is wine of no consequence," she said of her vinho verde
"It's crisp and fresh and sassy — a good summer wine," Sampaio e Mello added
And at only 10.5 percent alcohol by volume
It's what we drink in Portugal in the summer
Sampaio e Mello says she has "one foot on each continent" as she travels between her family's vineyards and her home in Madison
Her children are grown with careers of their own
but she hopes to pass the estate to one of them someday
She has plans for another white wine to come next summer
Sampaio e Mello will be pouring tastings of her wine at Steve's at 3618 University Ave
and at the Steve's at 122 Junction Road from 11 a.m

“I’m an alien to New York." “I fail and continue to fail every day.” These are the words spoken in "Halfway Through the Story of Our Life"
and produced by Alexandra Zelman-Doring presented by Throes Theater
the play paints a beautiful yet painful picture of three woman trying to discover who they are
Their stories are set to music by three composers (Ana Milosavljevic
dances and speaks in one or more languages
The actors use their real names and according to Zelman-Doring
about 20 percent of the play is drawn from their real life experiences
The first of the three women to come onto stage is Benedita Pereira
Pereira gives a sensual performance of a young actor trying to make it in the throes of New York City
Emma Meltzer is the second actor to tell the audience (or
Meltzer nails the comedic satire of the script as she explains how she struggles with her “WASPy parent brain,” always getting in the way of her judgment
is still and lifeless in the background for most of the play as her counterparts take center stage
and when it is her turn she explains in anger and bitterness that she is “clogged”
"Halfway Through the Story of Our Life" poses questions that often echo in the consciousness of young people everywhere
With a limited set and background it moves swiftly like a dream

If you drive through the Mistra neighbourhood of Bissau - the charming
ramshackle capital of Guinea-Bissau - signs of peoples’ love for American hip-hop are everywhere
The local football pitch is named “California” after Tupac’s song “California Love.” Clothes reading “50 Cent” or “Thug Life” are commonplace
and Rihanna’s latest hits blare out from rusty radios beneath the mango trees
While a fondness for American hip-hop is shared throughout West Africa (Tupac is nearly everyone’s favourite rapper)
Guinea-Bissau’s unique cultural influences give it its own distinctive style

Guinea-Bissau’s fashion sense is a mix of hip-hop
favouring bright colours (including lots of neon!) which stand out against the red earth and pale
Bissau-Guineans seem far less conservative than their francophone neighbours Senegal and Guinea
the semi-tropical climate and Portuguese creole give the country a Latin American feel
Earlier this month I was covering the final day of presidential campaign rallies in Bissau

Pet Valu in Bradford held one of its kitten adoption events
featuring three eight week old cuties from The Georgina Feral Cat Committee.
Pet Valu hosts the adoption event in hopes of the kittens finding their fur-ever homes.
Dennis and Benedita Wilkerson are one of two Bradford families who foster kittens from the committee.
There are four kittens part of the litter the Wilkersons are currently fostering
but only three made an appearance at the Adopt-a-Thon event
Digit the black and white tuxedo and Wiley the ginger were the three kittens
The fourth kittne at home is also a tuxedo cat like Digit
but was a little too frisky to come out of the house.
"It's fun watching them interact," said Dennis of the kittens.
"Wiley was the hissiest of the four but now he's just a cuddler," shared Benedita
The couple has been fostering cats with the Georgina Feral Cat Committee for the past five years. They love cats and even have four of their own.
Feral cats can sometimes scare off potential adoptees
especially kittens can be just as loveable as their non-feral counterparts.
They have a gentle nature to them once you give them time to accomodate to their new environment," explained Benedita
Majority of the cats the committee rescues are kittens
the better chance they have at warming up and being more socialized.
Benedita noted that adult feral cats are more "skiddish" in nature
and may never come around to being a "lap cat" but can adjust well and live happily in a loving
They enioy spending time with them and preparing them for their forever homes.
"We see the development of the personalities," said Benedita
Benedita knits homemade blankets for each kitten
The blankets go home with each kitten when they get adopted.
"It's kind of like a kid's reassurance blanket," she noted
with a familiar scent to help them adjust to their new surroundings.
In order to adopt one of the furry friends
an application must be filled out with a questionaire.
"People need to understand that this is a forever pet," said Benedita
Return (TNR) approach to controlling the feral cat population.
Volunteers will work together to trap the cats
then returned to their colony where they are taken care of by a conoly caretaker
The cats ears are also tipped to help identify them as spayed/neutered.
The kittens found in the colonies are rescued
socialized and eventually adopted out to families looking for a forever pet
125 cats and kittens have been adopted out to forever homes
Two hundred cats have been spayed or neutered and 80 cats have been rehomed
Supporters like Bradford's Pet Valu have donated hundreds of pounds of food and litter for the cats and kittens in foster care.
microchippng and a voucher for a spay/neutering at six months old.
