He details recent findings published in Science Advances that provide new understanding of how the brain works during and after social interactions which could lead to new ways to treat anxiety and depression.  “We all have fascinating brains and their complexity is being unraveled, not just by us, but by lots of scientists around the world and here in the U.S. And we're at the beginning of a really exciting era that we should support science and support scientists because who knows where this research will lead one day.” – Rodrigo Braga, PhD  Braga’s path to neuroscience started in college where he was an aspiring musician with a fascination with the mind This led him on an academic journey in philosophy MS: The brain is the most complex and mysterious organ in the human body Despite being at the center of everything we do from managing memory and attention to navigating social interactions advances in neuroscience and imaging are helping to shed light on how our brains function Recent discoveries could lead to new ways to treat a variety of neuro and psychiatric disorders an assistant professor of neurology in the Ken and Ruth Davee Department of Neurology at Weinberg He is using precision functional MRI technology to better understand how the brain is organized He recently discovered new insights into the brain's social Areas of the brain that allow us to think about and understand others' thoughts and feelings Brega about this research and other research in his lab how quickly the field of neuroscience is moving ahead and possible therapies that could one day come from his recent discoveries MS: Let's start by hearing a little bit more about you I know that you joined Northwestern over four years ago but I want to know a little bit more about your path to neuroscience I heard this isn't exactly what you set out to do in life.  and so I went to college to join a band and start a band and do music which is the mind I was always curious about The nature of the mind and how it is that we can create worlds in our minds and experience those almost as if perceiving something in the real world.  PhD: And so I was always curious about that and I decided to study it And I initially started studying philosophy and psychology the neuroscience component is what really fascinates me I related more to that way of thinking about the mind.  MS: You came here to Northwestern in 2020 to set up your lab.  MS: Tell me about the draw here to Northwestern and Northwestern Medicine.  we have access to some really exciting opportunities being monitored intracranial for their seizures That gives us an opportunity to study the brain directly through intracranial recordings We have excellent imaging facilities here at the Center for Translational Imaging so I knew that we'd be able to accomplish our MRI goals that's just one of the diseases that you are studying in your lab Tell me a little bit more about how you use this FMRI technology to help explore and understand epilepsy and other conditions.  PhD: A lot of our work focuses on epilepsy that they're all centered around this idea that you can map brain networks within individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging or FMRI So what we do is we start from that point and then we see what What different questions can we tackle with this technique One of them is to do that within epilepsy patients because we can take those brain network maps and then do intracranial recordings to sample the brain at high frequency and look at different signatures that you can't see in an MRI scanner But also being able to map brain networks within individuals gives us a way to study neurodegenerative disease The idea being that if you can map exactly which parts of the brain are involved in things like language or recollection then you can look at how the pattern of atrophy which means brain shrinking in those patients in those specific brain areas relates to dysfunction We're currently starting a project in the stroke division where we are looking at the same thing Take the network maps in people that have had strokes that affect language so they have aphasia and we're trying to track them over time to see how these networks are changing as someone recovers language ability following stroke.  MS: So this mapping of brain networks is what leads us to this study that we're talking about today that was recently published in Science Advances you focused on the brain's social cognition network to better understand how humans evolve to be so skillful at thinking about what's happening in other people's minds This is something called the Theory of Mine Network Tell me about this theory of mind network and what motivated you to look into this.  so this is a really interesting thing that we can do as humans is you can put yourself in someone else's mind and imagine what they must be thinking or happy or something is going on with them that you think And so that's just an example of something that we do all the time I wonder how this person's gonna react to what I say And it turns out that the regions that are involved the regions of the cerebral cortex that are involved in that type of thinking are in parts of the brain that have really expanded in our recent evolution And that implies that it's something that we have recently become better at doing or somehow are advanced because of that brain expansion and so that's in itself fascinating These regions are also part of something called the default network which is a really interesting set of brain regions that increase their activity it's usually in the periods in between a task you'll be doing a task and a scanner and then when you're waiting for the task to start up again So the default network's involved in this kind of creative And my work during my postdoc showed that actually within this canonical default network When we define networks within the individual brain that these two networks are adjacent to each other throughout the brain and were likely being blurred together by lower resolution approaches to brain mapping All those that average data cross individuals 'cause that induces blurring And so that's how we started down this line was that one network seemed to care about thinking about scenes and events if you're thinking you know about something you're gonna do later on today or how you got to work but the other network seemed to care about this other type of thinking which is when you are thinking about what someone else and that's the interesting distinction.  you were able to take some high resolution seven Tesla MRI data Can you talk to me a little bit about the role that these images play in your research and in this study?  So three Tesla scanners are very commonly used They're found in most hospitals or most universities There aren't as many of them in the US for instance So that was one leap where you can go to seven T and you can get you can actually make an image of the brain You can think of it as taking a high resolution photo where you can zoom in and see a very detailed But the main innovation that my whole lab is based around is this idea that it's a it's a quirk of the field in a way because And so you can only do so much pet scanning You can do like one session and then you really should not do that much because it's And so a lot of the tools in my field were borrowed from that pet field where Then that will give us a more stable map because we are looking for things that are consistent across people a map from a single session is not really stable enough We'd scan everybody once and then we'd average across people to get a more stable map A paper came out where a scientist called Russ Paul Jack he scanned himself over about a year and a half And so he had lots and lots of data from his own brain which meant he didn't have to average across any subjects He could just average across all the different sessions from his own brain And that meant he could make a map of just his individual brain network It's like looking at a much more crisp image And so that really has sparked a revolution in the field and a lot of studies have now coming out that are using that approach to dive into the individual 'cause you can see so much more.  What did you find and how does it contribute to the literature What do we know now that we didn't know before?  PhD: So what the study contributes is that we show that those cortical regions that I mentioned are in the really expanded parts of the human brain They are in constant communication with a really important structure called the amygdala And the amygdala is a really important structure for lots of mental health reasons It's also known to play a role in things like fear learning but there's also a really broad literature showing that it helps control social behaviors they have different abilities to detect emotion in other people we may instantly focus on the eyes and thereby quickly learn the emotion that that person might be experiencing their eyes may not be drawn to the eyes of the other person so they're not sampling the world in the same way that we are There's lots of studies showing how the amygdala controls parenting and aggression So we know that the amygdala's involved in this controlling social behaviors but then we also have this broad cortical network that's involved in thinking about what's in someone else's minds And so it seems like there must be a link between those two and and indeed there is evidence from lots of different tasks That people are performing in a scanner where you show that both the amygdala and the cortical network are active for some kinds of social thinking But what we did is we just had people lie in the scanner and do what's called a resting state scan They're just staring at a plus sign to keep them in a calm state where they're not moving their head And then you can do this approach called a functional connectivity approach to brain mapping Where you're looking at regions of the brain that are correlated with each other they're going up and down at the same time And so we mapped the social cognitive network just using this functional connectivity approach amygdala the other thing that was really cool is because this was a seventh Tesla high resolution image we could actually dive deeper into the amygdala and say So which one is specifically connected to the social cognitive network That's where things became really cool because what we saw is that the network is connected to a specific part called the medial nucleus Is in communication with the social cognitive network.  you talk about the fact that there could be new targets now for stimulation therapy either non-invasive or invasive therapy to help people perhaps with anxiety or depression because of what you found in this study PhD: Knowledge of these circuits is really important because often you can apply stimulation to a connected part of the brain and it will have downstream effects in other parts of the brain which is a really important structure for a lot of mental health conditions.  PhD: And so now we're showing these parts of the brain This part that's in the social cognitive network has this connection to the amygdala that perhaps stimulating those cortical regions will affect the amygdala We don't know whether that would be therapeutic or not MS: Can you tell me a few more specifics about these different types of stimulation two that are particularly exciting right now?  PhD: TMS transcranial magnetic stimulation actually it's through the skull and so you have to do it at parts of the head that you can access 'cause you could target it anywhere around the head But what they do is they target a specific part of the brain which is thought to be connected to a part of the brain called a Subgenual Cingulate Now basically you're doing the classic approach is to take a network approach and say the subgenual cingulate is connected to this part of the prefrontal cortex let's apply TMS to the part that's accessible thinking that we're gonna be activating that part downstream Do an FMRI scan and look at what's connected to that part of the brain and then stimulate those connected regions The other approach is to do an intracranial We had Helen Maberry come and give us a talk a couple of weeks ago about this you target an electrode to the subgenual region and then you stimulate that and some people really respond quite well to that.  but you need surgery to get to that part of the brain this part is way more accessible and I can stimulate this through the skull but it seems like it does have an effect in many patients.  MS: So this study is a great example of how using the latest technology can really help advance the field What are you excited about for future studies?  they show us the power of individualized brain mapping where if you take an individualized approach and map that individual's brain networks you can gain insights not only into the nature of organization of certain cognitive functions practically where is the network in this person is it in this gyrus or this part of the brain You can imagine how that's really important for things like neurodegenerative disease where you have gradual thinning of the cortex then that function might be spared in that patient And so we're trying to combine this individualized mapping with some of the patients we have there the damage affected 50% of this network's region What does that mean for long-term prognosis Your likelihood of improving language function We think those are some really cool applications.  MS: Tell me about the students in your lab and how they contributed to this particular paper.  because we focus on broadly similar techniques the knowledge gained by one is shared between everybody The student that really led this work that was published in Science Advances was Denise Edmonds and she was the recipient of an N-S-F-G-R-F-P scholarship from inception she was working on defining the network maps And really a lot of the work we do is just how do you demonstrate what you're seeing And so she really did an excellent job of making figures that will really highlight MS: Tell me about the next steps in your lab and where where you would like to see some of these findings end up someday PhD: We have some projects that we are ramping up so we are currently collecting data on the primary progressive aphasia to study degeneration of the language network A counterpoint to that is a study we're just starting in stroke patients where we're looking at individuals that have had stroke that affects language but then we're gonna track them over a year where the language function is probably gonna improve in some of them And we can do the brain mapping at multiple time points and see how exactly the language network is changing What does that look like for someone to improve function Or is it just a case that it's the same network region something about its properties are adapting to the injury or So those are some really cool areas that we're that we're investigating our work in epilepsy patients I think is also very cool We have some cool experiments looking at the presence of sharp wave ripples which is a signal in the hippocampus that seems to be related to recollection or the forming of a mental image about something And so we have some studies where we're looking at those ripples in the context of imagining different things we often make lists or we'll have a song in our head or whatever it is we're using the relationship between those sharp wave ripples and these different forms of thoughts.  is there anything you would like to leave our listeners with as they think about their own brain and the research that's taking place at Northwestern and what we might expect in the future what we're learning that they might find interesting Just a little tidbit as we leave today that we'd like to leave people with.  we all have fascinating brains and their complexity is being unraveled but by lots of scientists around the world and here in the US and that We're at the beginning of a really exciting era that we should support science and support scientists because who knows where this research will lead one day.  thank you so much for coming on the show and talking about your latest research and we look forward to seeing new papers coming out of your lab and those from your another opportunity to exit the ship and explore historical and touristy destinations fans were eager to enjoy the last night in port by celebrating “formal night” with a fun mix of Star Trek cosplay and fancy dress The evening featured a special theatrical showing of the recent Star Trek: Section 31 movie along with more evening activities to give guests the chance to get to know the Star Trek talent and the day featured a great panel with Brannon Braga while with the nighttime highlight being the big Q’s Costume Party for even more cosplay Here are some highlights from the last couple of days No one has written more Star Trek than Brannon Braga and Enterprise along with two feature films (Generations and First Contact) so it was a highlight for Trek cruise fans to hear from him with a panel moderated by his Voyager colleague with an emphasis on their shared experiences as this cruise is celebrating that show’s 30th anniversary This panel was an opportunity to get a glimpse into the minds of the writers in the Voyager writers room Fatjo set Braga up with a discussion on Voyager‘s recasting of Captain Janeway from Geneviève Bujold to Kate Mulgrew “I was a huge advocate for Geneviève Bujold And Rick was the one… I don’t remember what [co-creators] Jeri [Taylor] and Michael [Piller] said… but Rick Berman was the one saying ‘She’s not used to being on television This is not going to end well.’ And if you’ve seen the dailies… she looks terrified.'” The recasting has become a consistent topic at STTC panels the screening of the Voyager documentary included some very high-quality footage of Bujold as Janeway both Braga and Fatjo admit that Bujold could never have made the role work and Mulgrew had a lock on the Janeway character from the first time she walked on set Brannon Braga with Lolita Fatjo on Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) It’s easy to overlook Connor Trinneer’s series “The Hot Seat,” held in early afternoons in the cozy lounge at the forward end of the ship but this is a mistake as it’s a program that really embodies the slower more intimate tone that The Cruise has over other conventions the former Enterprise star sits down with one of his Star Trek actor friends and asks them pointed questions about their early life and career Even though his show is named “Hot Seat,” his questions are neither high-pressure nor impatient Trinneer’s takes a very sensitive approach that allows his guests to tell their story at a pace that feels right for them The former organization attempts to give urban gang members a path out of gang life while the latter attempts to reduce the draw of gang membership by (hopefully) weakening our current culture of violence An audience member prompted Chase to describe what it was like to contact the United Nations to propose bringing them to Comic-Con let’s bring the real heroes to Comic-Con Let’s make these parallels between justice on-screen and justice in real life this is Chase Masterson from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with countries.’ And she said ‘The President of the U.N We’ve always wanted to go to Comic-Con!'” Connor Trinneer with Chase Masterson on Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) Nana Visitor’s “Ask Mama Nana” was a Q&A session that showed the profound differences in the life outlooks of Visitor and her DS9 character Nana took the stage and fielded a variety of questions Having built a reputation among STTC regulars and her social media followers Nana’s fans know her to be someone with a great deal of life experience and a heart willing to share that experience with anyone who asks Many fans had questions about life stresses ranging from current events to professional troubles and Visitor explained that she’d found that curiosity was enabling: Because think of a Vulcan that doesn’t show emotion even if you find your curiosity about yourself Nana Visitor on Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) Tawny Newsome and Eugene Cordero offered an improv comedy show this year’s titled “We’re in Town for Something Else” the two Lower Decks stars and improv comedy veterans asked the audience for funny stories about visiting a strange city and then doing something else completely unrelated to the reason for your visit Tawny outlined the idea as volunteer hands went up: “The reason it’s called  ‘We’re in Town for Something Else’ is because when we do it alongside the conventions it’s very cool to be able to go to a city for like but then be able to this thing that we love on the side So we actually want to talk to you all about a time that you might have been in town for one thing but then ended up doing something else that was more interesting.” Tawny and Eugene have tried out this routine at a number of conventions Star Trek actors have often been classically trained or had a musical theatre background but The Lower Decks cast is a sign that strong improv training has been very healthy for the franchise Tawny Newsome and Eugene Cordero on Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) Formerly home to a Mayan settlement, Belize City is now a modern city built by the colonizers from British Honduras as a way to consolidate their control over the indigenous population. Much of it was destroyed by Hurricane Hattie in 1961 and most landmarks are divided into the categories of being constructed before the hurricane or after the hurricane Similar distinctions are made for anything built since Belize’s independence from British Honduras in 1981 View of Belize City from Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) Fans visiting Belize City from Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) This Mayan could be from an alien planet (Photo: TrekMovie) Belize City gets a visit from Starfleet and Star Trek: The Cruise VIII (Photo: TrekMovie) fans were eager to enjoy the last night in port by celebrating Formal Night Screen-accurate dress uniforms were worn with pride while some people decided to add their own twists by mashing Star Trek styles with tuxedos or ball gowns and dousing both with a healthy amount of glitter and jewelry a special theatrical showing of the recent Star Trek: Section 31 movie was held in the Palace Theatre while other evening activities continued to offer guests the chance to get to know the Star Trek talent Star Trek: The Cruise VIII departed Belize City shortly after 5:00 PM local time the ship held its biggest bash of the week: Q’s Costume Party Cosplay fans entered to be considered for the best costume in the categories of Replicator (most accurate reproduction of a Star Trek character) Mash-Up (the most effective fusion of Star Trek with some other concept) and Out-of-Universe (the best costume from outside the franchise) John de Lancie himself was on deck as the official judge but the winners were selected by audience applause Check back for more updates before the week-long cruise returns to Florida runniest and most random fan costumes I’ve ever seen It’s always a party when the Lower Decks cast shows up Always love seeing how creative fans can be This looks like too much fun to miss a ninth time… this series of logs has convinced me to board the 2026 60th anniversary cruise I think Zoe Saldana may be the first Oscar-winning Trek castmember Yeah far from the first Trek star to win one but love of Kahless please don’t put her in a solo streaming movie Today, the European Commission has revealed the winners of the 2024-25 European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), celebrating a decade of recognising cities that lead the way in delivering innovative solutions for their citizens. The top prizes this year have been awarded to the cities of Torino and Braga.  I warmly congratulate Torino and Braga on winning the 2024-25 European Capital of Innovation Awards. They show that innovation is not just about technology but about creating opportunities fostering inclusion and improving the quality of life for citizens The winners and finalists are transforming ambition into action setting inspiring examples of innovation on the ground in Europe and beyond the European Commission has announced the 1st and 2nd runners-up for each category: The awards ceremony took place on 13 November 2024 in Lisbon one of the world's largest technology events Commissioner Iliana Ivanova handed over the event recognising cities that have embedded innovation into the daily fabric of urban life The ceremony brought together the mayors from winning cities and past iCapital winners The European Capital of Innovation category winner while the two runners-up have been awarded €100 000 each The European Rising Innovative City category winner and the two runner-up cities have each been granted €50 000 showcases a comprehensive approach to experimentation and innovation leveraging its rich history and industrial heritage to tackle both present and future urban challenges while Braga has developed a range of innovative solutions from tech-based clusters to cultural and creative industries and established a strong innovation ecosystem with a focus on collaboration and inclusivity Supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe, the European Capital of Innovation Awards - also known as iCapital - celebrate cities with dynamic The competition acknowledges those urban centres that successfully connect citizens and public authorities to drive transformative change This year celebrates the tenth anniversary of the iCapital Awards Aix-Marseille Provence Metropole (2022) and Lisbon (2023) as European Capitals of Innovation Past winners in the Rising Innovative city category include Vantaa (2021) iCapital is one of the five EIC Prizes granted under Horizon Europe, the EU's research and innovation framework programme. following an assessment performed by two high-level juries of independent experts The side that adapts and innovates first will win the next war commander of Army Special Operations Command The key to achieving that is adopting a collective mindset and what I'm asking here is really a call to arms for the innovation cycle,” Braga said Oct 15 during a Warriors Corner presentation at the Association of the U.S Army’s Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington Responsibility for the innovation cycle does not belong to one entity nor solely to the military and whether it’s a new idea or someone else’s idea “it’s not always the one with the first idea.” the employment of that idea on the battlefield the lessons learned from that employment and the rapid innovation for the next phase of that and how tightly you can get that I argue is going to be the winner of the next war,” Braga said adding that it is “something we need to work on collectively.” and the advantage in warfare will belong to the entity that can optimize and adapt it quickly pointing out that innovation is playing out on battlefields from the Middle East to Europe every day “The speed of innovation is only getting faster … We are not talking months and years and programs of record You're talking hours and days from idea to concept to operator to engineer to building it to flying it and getting it to the front line to make a difference in someone's life,” Braga said or old technology perhaps deployed in a new way … and it's going to be inherent that we work together as a coalition.” the command is learning from others and changing its formations This includes creating a technical warrant officer position new courses in robotics and unmanned systems integration and a new special operations robotics detachment “Every facet of Army special operations is changing because warfare is changing,” Braga said The AUSA Book Program offers quality books about Army heritage One of its goals is to foster an shrill consistency is immensely grating It’s approaching midnight in late January and I’m dragging my feet through Porto airport a morose headache lingering behind my eyes thanks to the three beers I drank in Gatwick Wetherspoons a few hours earlier as I find my equally fatigued looking driver and ride off into the night a city in Northern Portugal renowned for its decadent churches and architectural charm to bear witness to and partake in a revolutionary experiment on the ‘festival’ format.  SQUARE has been pitched as a fluid and forward-thinking amalgamation of music and conference; a four-day spectacle driven by the intention of supporting independent promoters grassroots organisations and industry professionals looking to make a difference as part of their year as Portuguese Capital of Culture will be my home for the week and the base of the conferences But there’s plenty of travel to come with each day’s musical showcase occurring in a different city in the region as I check into my hotel and crawl towards a deep slumber I’m excited and intrigued by how the next few days will play out.  Morning comes; a catalyst for some early trip drama this seems to be a usual occurrence in European hotels so I naively ignore the warning for some 15 minutes I look down from my window to find scores of staff and guests standing outside A heavy haze of panic succumbs me as I grab my passport and baccy pouch and prepare for a fight for survival The corridor outside is smoky but there is no sign of fire so I jet down the halls towards the fire exit and dive down the staircases several steps at a time.  The hotel reception is brimming with worried onlookers and soon after a fire engine filled with burly men arrives They run courageously into the unknown as we await news What feels like hours pass until eventually the go ahead is given and after a period of uncertainty we’re allowed to re-enter the establishment I gear myself up to begin the SQUARE adventure.  Mexico City and Idanha-a-Nova respectively discussing their experiences in the live music orbit and digital space.  when the panel is opened to questions from the audience I ask: what’s their experience with music journalism in their cities is the answer—any presence of publications wains Their unsurprising conclusion is paradoxical; hope of a prosperous future dwindles for many in the world of music press as Ted Kessler wrote in the eulogy of Paper Cuts his gut-achingly funny portrayal of music journalism’s ‘death’ now is ground zero—it’s down to the next generation of writers to shape the craft’s direction I smile wryly as I leave to grab some complimentary (two meals a day are included in the festival pass) lunch.  so does the rain that has been teasing a descent all morning there’s a bus to guide the one hundred or so attendees to the first new city to explore bar the cacophony of droplets from the sky that it hosts We’re ushered towards the first venue—each performance has a different home—which is an art gallery and cultural space called CIAJG the first act to take the stage is Skanderani Their performance is a captivating and fluid exploration of Ethiopian jazz augmented by a psychedelic-meets-vintage visual backdrop and eccentric traditional-inspired outfits There’s a twenty or so minute walk to the next venue and with the rain violently falling onto the cobbled pavement arrival at cultural cafe Centro Cultural Vila Flor is a relief though—the soteropolitano singer-songwriter’s performance brims with soulful and emotional inflection decadent electric guitar and supporting trombonist amalgamate an ear-catching blend of Brazilian rhythms and jazzy electronic experimentalism.  The Porto-raised duo evoke a rich and esoteric atmosphere a deft and devastating merging of traditional folk delicate vocal melodies and expressive spoken word The room is silent—everyone in the audience is immersed by the intimacy of the performance The act who inhabit this idiosyncratic location are Scottish two-piece comfort The queer punk act edge in metal and hip hop tendencies riotously delving into personal songwriting and raucous effervescence Lisbon-based DJ and producer King Kami ups the hedonism with a dance set that touches on techno accompanied by a playful AI image backdrop from visual artist João Parente Then it’s time for dinner—a tasty curry—and some drinks before a return bus to Braga for the nighttime programme which takes place at a shopping centre at an abandoned cinema Brussels-based free-wheeling one man band who combines Latin rhythms with an electro-acoustic soul I excuse myself to the comfort of my hotel room there’s no fire emergency the next morning so I successfully have some breakfast and catch up on some office admin The weather has taken a shift for the better with blue skies and gentle sun beaming down on me as I embark to gnration for a panel discussing Geography as a catalyst and as a limitation It’s a fascinating conversation about the impact that where you live has on the potential of your success and the definition of what a ’scene’ is.  After a bite of lunch and with some time to kill I saunter around Braga in full tourist mode surveying the seemingly endless array of churches classy cafes and a man with a giant bubble-maker in the main square A few wrong turns later and I belatedly arrive for the bus to the next city which turns out to be a quaint and quite adorable setting with the Cávado river running through the heart of the picturesque place Our first pit stop there is Campo da Fiera an open area market of small stores selling clothes In the centre of the stalls is the day’s inaugural act They deliver a joy-inducing set of disco and dub mixers with startling grooves anthemic vocal showings and heady synths.  Ensuing the lively start to proceedings comes a trip to Museu da Olaria for an intimate performance from Galician duo Caamaño & Ameixeiras Built from a blend of accordion and violin with stunning vocals atop effortless chemistry and affecting tone makes for a dazzling experience merging together their region’s orthodox sonics with tango rhythms and folk melodies offering bottomless emotional depth and technical excellence alike.  From the quiet highs of the transient duo to the intricate guitar work of Richardo De Leon The Panamanian instrumentalist and singer entertains a crowd in Theatro Gil Vicente with an impressive instrumental ability but a hit-and-miss vocal performance The 45 minute sets for every artist are proving to be a mixed bag: the longer length allows the festival goers to really understand the artist but simultaneously sometimes feel overlong and somewhat tedious.  Portuguese hardcore outfit Hetta bring a heavy intensity to a dilapidated underground corridor The punk-leaning screamo is a monstrous addition to the line-up Columbian multi-disciplinarian Julián Mayorga cranks up the weird meter with an eclectic set that blends folk There’s a period of time without music so a new companion and I decide to take in some of the other entertainment Braga has to offer—namely a slightly derelict but oddly charming back-alley snooker club There’s a plethora on offer—from snooker to darts and we accidentally remain there until closing time although I lost every game—it’s the taking part that matters The next day sees me bunkered down in my hotel room to catch up for New Music Friday for the morning we’ll be taking the train; music to my ears we group of attendees make our way to the first venue of the day The Lisbon-native is a bold and full-bodied performer offering a potent plethora of rap cuts that get the growing audience—mostly made up of people you wouldn’t expect to be hip hop listeners—on their feet and immersed in her sharp flows and splashes of melody Sju, an avant pop singer-songwriter who moonlights as a hat designer for the likes of Slowdive and Gorillaz, comes after. Sporting a plant pot hat herself, the artist’s dreamy, kaleidoscopic, PC Music-inspired soundscapes are alluring—if sometimes abrasively sweet. Next comes Verde Prato, a creative who I’ve crossed paths with before on a trip to Bilbao whose merger of Basque heritage and left-field electronic sounds is full of haunting beauty and meticulous musicality.  After taking a break from the music to grab a much needed Super Bock I find the last act of the expedition to Famalicão to be the most startling of the entire trip so far Fidju Kitxora are a fresh entity into the musical sphere Against the backdrop of what appears to be an empty market the trio of musicians send the audience into a trance state with their progressive hypnotic style that flicks through funaná field-sampling and more amid a swirl of experimental electronica draped in a black tracksuit with his hood up who had been standing to the side of the stage steps up onto the platform where Fidju Kitxora are playing seemingly uncomfortable at the occurrence.  Everyone is confused—is he part of the performance?  The longer he dances (it must be for a good 20 or 25 minutes) the more the crowd becomes at one with him and blends within the lore of the act seamlessly walking off the stage and through a backdoor before the reverb of the synth has swirled to a halt Who knows—but it was fucking majestic.  Dinner and the train home is a swirling meditation of the enigmatic circumstances that have just played out in front of our eyes But there’s no time to wallow in the mystery—the show(s) must go on and DJ sets from the impressive De Schuurman and Antconstantino before trickling off into the orifice of the night following a mid-evening switch to negronis the night prior Today’s festivities have a later start taking place around Braga’s gig spots and makeshift venues—churches and galleries at the wonderfully dingy Café-Concerto RUM by Mavy Santos-based guitarist and vocalist and her incredible drummer deliver a mind-bending set of artful prog-rock and off-kilter rhythmic genius in what is a sprawling showcase of skill.  More technical nuance follows in the shape of George Silver whose dynamic polymathy is deftly eye-catching one of the more conventional artists on the line-up offers both crowd-pleasing vitality and a crisp concoction of guitar-led subs-sounds at a packed out Lustre Rocío Guzmán’s evocative vocals allow space for rumination before one last boogie with Mozambican-born Portugal-based rapper Emmvr and boundary pushing DJ and producer Liliane Chlela I bow out and embark into the night.  one of discovery and immersion; a mini world within a previously unknown crevice of the universe a stratosphere of motley new acquaintances one driven not by commercialism or statistics but by the purity of musical expression and the richness of community The music was as globally wide-spanning as I’ve ever experienced at a single event with each act designed to disrupt expectation and celebration their musical lineage The organisation—which could have easily been wayward—was near faultless and the commitment to originality is a breath of fresh air with the modest number of attendees and the even more shrewd price structure of just €50 for the full program and eight meals But you can only hope that the local and international spheres champion its individuality I’m just grateful for the opportunity Words – Ben Tibbits a trip to braga a trip to braga a trip to braga Features Editor Ben Tibbits takes on his latest European city for Kappa Futur Festival's 'Art & Techno' experience Set to take place in late January across four cities in Northern Portugal radical music showcase SQUARE has shared its full line-up Features Editor Ben Tibbits makes his way to Southern France to visit Cognac From Sega Bodega to Pa Salieu: Sónar Barcelona share a second wave of artists who are set to take to the Spanish city in mid June Ben Tibbits is back with another adventure this time moseying on up to Sheffield for Tramlines Festival climbing many a hill and losing his mind to Jamie T Wonderland Features Editor Ben Tibbits heads to Formentera for SON Estrella Galicia Posidonia Wonderland Features Editor Ben Tibbits visits Bilbao to dig deep into the city's art and to attend one of elrow's iconic parties attending Sónar Lisboa for a weekend full of the best in European electronic music and Portuguese culture Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin partners with the worlds of haute couture and parfumerie Ben Tibbits visits Groningen to attend ESNS battling the cold and discovering the best emerging talent Ben Tibbits takes an adventure-filled trip to Berlin to visit and discover one of the city's most prominent nightclubs Frequenting rising Athenian electronic festival Primer Wonderland Features Editor Ben Tibbits finds big-hitting crowd-pleasers Ben Tibbits takes a trip to Amsterdam to discover Kafe Raves Zany characters and beautifully odd occurrences: here's what went down.. Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro – the former defence minister Gen Walter Braga Netto – has been arrested by federal police in connection with an alleged plot to seize power through a military coup Last month police formally accused Braga Netto who was Bolsonaro’s vice-presidential running mate in the 2022 election of playing a lead role in a criminal conspiracy designed to stop the vote’s leftwing winner has rejected those claims as “fanciful and absurd” who also served as Bolsonaro’s chief of staff during his 2019-2023 presidency was taken into custody at his home in Rio’s beachside Copacabana neighbourhood In a statement, the federal police said Saturday’s arrest was intended to prevent “the repetition of illegal acts” “During its investigations, the federal police concluded that Braga Netto was the architect of the coup [plot] – that he was the main authority behind the planning of the coup,” the political reporter Andréia Sadi wrote on her blog the mentor of the coup’ – populist’s arrest as almost inevitable and speculate it will happen next year The recently published police report on the alleged plot paints a shocking picture of a long-running conspiracy investigators believe was designed to help Bolsonaro cling to power despite losing the 2022 election The idea was allegedly to use social media to disseminate false claims of electoral fraud that could be used to justify a military intervention Police claim the pro-Bolsonaro plot was supposed to take place on 15 December 2022 – two weeks before Lula was due to be sworn in after beating Bolsonaro in October’s presidential election including Braga Netto and other top military figures allegedly hoped that on that day Bolsonaro would sign a “coup decree” authorising a military takeover Braga Netto and the former minister of institutional security Gen Augusto Heleno were supposed to be put in charge of a “crisis management” cabinet Police claim the only reason Bolsonaro did not sign that decree was because plotters failed to secure sufficient support from Brazil’s military top brass Police also suspect the plotters of planning to assassinate or kidnap perceived enemies of Bolsonaro’s radical political movement and the supreme court judge Alexandre de Moraes Earlier this month Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp Lt Col Mauro Cid reportedly told investigators that Braga Netto had helped bankroll the group of rogue special forces operatives that was supposedly behind those assassination and kidnap plans Braga Netto delivered those funds disguised as a box of wine This halo in Roma's 3-0 Europa League victory By virtue of their 3-0 over Braga in the Europa League yesterday Claudio Ranieri and Roma accomplished something the Giallorossi hadn't managed since last April: They won two matches in a row it's been eight grueling months since the capital club won back-to-back matches the club won three consecutive matches in the middle of that month before floundering winning only two of their final nine matches in all competitions Time will tell whether Ranieri can use these victories as a springboard to greater success but as we prepare to close the books on this terrible he has the club trending in the right direction—at long last Roma will qualify for the Europa League Knockout Phase Play-offs giving the Giallorossi a chance to extend their European adventure into 2025 before we fret about Roma's path to the Knockout Phase The leader in the clubhouse for players most likely to be sold for a substantial profit this summer the 23-year-old French midfielder weathered the storm early this season and has emerged as the club's most effective midfielder Koné stuffed the stat sheet last night: Seven key passes and two passes into the penalty area—all of which were game-highs for either club Koné went a perfect three-for-three in tackles while recovering five balls It won't be long before we start seeing “Koné to Juventus,” “Manchester City Inquire About Koné,” or “Real Madrid to Bid for Koné” headlines Roma's embattled vice-captain is quietly putting together a nice stretch and was integral in the club's victory last night to the tune of two tackles and three clearances he was surprisingly instrumental in the Giallorossi's attack including two big chances created per Sofascore while adding two balls into the final third and even an accurate cross into the penalty area for good measure Saud made a case for more playing time yesterday the 25-year-old Saudi Arabian international had a night to remember for Roma In addition to scoring his first goal on the European continent Saud showcased his speed and aggression against Braga going two-for-two on dribbles and completing a game-high four progressive carries while contributing four key passes five balls into the final third and chipping in seven shot-creating actions If the smile on his face and the warm embrace he received from Ranieri after scoring a cracking 10th-minute goal weren't indication enough Pellegrini was able to breathe a sigh of relief last night The subject of increasing scrutiny and transfer speculation Roma's captain turned back the clock last night It was another solid performance from the Ivorian attacked nearly as much as he defended against Braga In addition to helping Roma keep a clean sheet yesterday Ndicka was instrumental in the passing game and three balls played into the final third the German center-back put on another show for Giallorossi supporters including seven clearances and a last-man tackle Hummels also added four shot-creating actions I think we may need to start considering handing him a new deal It was a night for the marginalized in Rome Zalewski has been under enormous pressure this season finding himself on the outside looking in as the club tries in vain to find a taker for the young Polish winger Zalewksi reminded us of what he could be: five shot-creating actions It's probably not enough to secure his future with the club but it's a reminder that he can be an effective piece when focused Considering how lopsided the scoreline was (and how much more it could have been) we'll stow away the pitchforks and head straight into our post-match purgatory in some instances) but didn't stand out quite as much as their peers That's it for today's Sinners & Saints but check back with us this weekend when we break down the club's performance against Como OneFootball's home page Search Settings Sign In Sign InJoinManchester United’s Interest in Braga Star Explained | OneFootballEPL Index The Primeira Liga scouting operation is in full swing and Bailey suggests that United are ‘doing work’ to see if they can sign Fernandes But does the 19-year-old represent a realistic and valuable addition for United United’s need for a specialist right wing-back is well-documented but Bailey reports that United are wary of the costs involved in signing the 17-year-old a player with more first-team experience and similar attributes Both Fernandes and Quenda are attack-minded Their ability to operate as either a wing-back or a winger makes them ideal for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system Fernandes boasts five goals and five assists in 44 appearances across all competitions this season has produced two goals and seven assists in 42 matches Scouting reports from Total Football Analysis paint Fernandes as an ‘explosive’ player who thrives in one-on-one situations with a sharp turn of pace and ‘outstanding vision’ that helps him deliver ‘precise’ crosses These qualities align with United’s need for a player who can stretch defences and supply ammunition to their attacking line His contract with Braga runs until June 2028 and his release clause stands at €40million (£33m) Bailey suggests United believe they can negotiate a lower fee which indicates that the club sees value in the deal While Fernandes appears to be a more cost-effective alternative to Quenda United’s transfer approach under INEOS is being carefully managed with the club intent on avoiding previous mistakes then securing Fernandes for a reasonable fee could be a shrewd alternative For Manchester United the right wing-back position has been a persistent headache and it is clear that Amorim wants a dynamic Fernandes’ profile is exciting—he possesses flair, pace, and vision—but whether he is ready to take the leap to the Premier League remains to be seen. Braga have nurtured talents before but stepping into a club the size of United The concern for fans will be INEOS’s cautious approach to spending Or is this a sign that United’s recruitment strategy is finally becoming smarter—securing high-ceiling talent without overpaying there should be trust in his ability to identify the right profile well-planned signings this summer to ensure a squad that truly fits the manager’s system Related NewsManchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ representatives in talks with Al Hilal over summer move Bruno Fernandes wins Manchester United’s April Player of the Month award ‘Harrydinho’ – Man United stars react to Maguire magic “We could never predict that scoreline” - Bruno Fernandes at the double as United on brink of Europa League final after victory in Bilbao Bruno Fernandes hails “confident” teammate for magical moment that left Athletic Club shellshocked Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Eberechi Eze scores as Eagles get ready to peak in FA Cup final Glasner will be content with his side’s performance against a team chasing Champions League qualificationCrystal Palace had their chances and could have nicked it late on, but a 1-1 draw... Football transfer rumours: Rashford in Man Utd exit talks; Real Madrid suffer Alexander-Arnold setback Real Madrid 'agree terms' with Carlo Ancelotti over his departure Carlo Ancelotti's future appears to be sealed after the iconic Italian manager has reached terms over his pending departure from Real Madrid.According to fresh reports from The Athletic, an agreement... Here's what Claudio Ranieri had to say about his team's showing after the final whistle.. Let's start with the performance: Roma had 17 shots on goal today although we held onto the ball a bit too much at times That's ok though – we can't expect everything immediately and the fans are entertained when you create goalscoring chances there are two individuals we could pick out You showed faith in Lorenzo Pellegrini and he repaid you by scoring who was very much an unknown quantity but he was on fire today he was on fire in training so I thought it was a shame not to try him I didn't have the advantage of friendly games so I wasn't sure whether to play him or not in previous matches because I didn't know how he would respond I could see on the training ground that he'd found his scoring boots again What was the secret to restoring unity in the camp in such a short space of time “I spoke to the players and I said: 'Help me because I can't afford to get anything wrong Give me everything you have and I'll try to help from the dugout if I can do something for you.' I think the main thing was restoring their self-belief because they didn't just forget how to play football and we have a long way to go and a lot of improvement to make.” Did you expect to find such a midfield general in Manu Kone How much room for improvement do you think he has he needs to understand when to run with the ball and when to play two-touch but you should let the ball do the running I confirm that I have read the privacy policy – EU VAT IT09305501000 -
