Portugal’s capital bears the brunt of its tourism (though we’re big fans of Porto ourselves)
Many of the city’s older neighborhoods have undergone dramatic revitalization
Long-time residents decry that revitalization and home-sharing are not only leading to over-tourism
but paving over much of the history and culture that made Lisbon so charming to visit in the first place
you probably aren’t flying all the way to Europe to eat in a restaurant that looks like Los Angeles
Take a 10-minute ferry ride across the Tagus and you’ll be greeted at the dock by grandmas in cheerful floral dresses
enticing you with fresh fruits and veggies grown on their plots further inland
Most visitors come over in the late afternoon and catch the 101 bus up to the famed Jesus statue
more likely they head back to their Airbnb.
But it’s well worth going off the tourist path and lingering in Almada
Almada has a down-to-earth neighborhood vibe populated by an older
Spend a day ducking into humble shops specializing in cheese
And with four distinct areas to explore -- Cacilhas
and Bairro Pombal -- there’s plenty of things to do in Almada between meals
Almada immediately brings one thing to mind -- eating seafood along the waterfront in Cacilhas
The neighborhood is a direct link to Lisbon’s shipbuilding
seagoing past (the nearby Lisnave shipyards were once the country’s biggest employer)
the pedestrian-only Rua Candido dos Reis is lined with seafood restaurants
You’ll find multi-generational Portuguese families and couples dining in the area
often with a primo view of Lisbon across the river.
from simple neon-lit rooms with laminated menus
to elegant white-tablecloth joints with wall-to-wall seafood on display
Grab a table and order a cataplana de marisco
a traditional Portugeuse dish in which shellfish like clams
and mussels are cooked in a copper pan (cataplana) along with onions
The seafood here is ridiculously fresh | Mercado da RomeiraIn season sardinhas assadas (sardines cooked on an outside grill) are plentiful
Polvo is another local favorite: octopus served whole
or grilled and cut into pieces and eaten as a salad
choose a prato de frutos do mar (a seafood platter).
and clams -- but you must try percebes at least once
tube-like shellfish are also known as gooseneck barnacles
It takes a bit of work to eat them but they’re totally worth it (and they Instagram well)
Head to the Cova da Piedade neighborhood and eat your way through the Mercado da Romeira, a former cork factory that was abandoned for 60 years. Set in a gritty stretch of warehouses, it’s like a smaller version of Lisbon’s uber-popular Time Out Market
Half a dozen outlets offer everything from traditional Portuguese fare to American smoked ribs (maybe skip these) to vegetarian and vegan delights made from produce grown by the owner’s parents
Inside the Mercado da Romeira | Mercado da RomeiraBuild up your strength with secretos de porco preto grelhados (a plate of thinly sliced
succulent grilled Ibreian pork) and a glass of Portuguese wine
Or tuck into a beer and petiscos -- battered and fried snacks with bacalhau (cod)
or caracol (snails) when they’re in season
There’s live music most nights and on weekend afternoons to help you dance off your food coma
A few blocks from the Mercado da Romeira, impressive street art by Portuguese artists decorates warehouse walls and pays tribute to the area’s naval history. In one gigantic piece, a little girl holds a Transtejo ferry in her hand. On another wall, a glittering whale breaks the surface of the water. A piece by local artist Vaso Maio depicts a smiling fisherman patiently waiting for a catch
some have been converted to cater to younger Lisbonites moving to the area
Gentrification is beginning south of the river
where temporary exhibits range from the history of the 10th century Arab invasions to the glory days of Portuguese rock’n’roll
Originally the house of a quinta (farm) of the same name
the main building is believed to date to the 17th or 18th century
Today you’ll find contemporary art exhibitions in its rooms
There’s also a chapel decorated with Biblical scenes made from azulejo (Portuguese tiles)
an unmarked door off of reception leads to a gorgeous garden
and some of the best views of the Tagus.

2018Photo by Alex LauThe best restaurant in Lisbon is not actually in Lisbon
It’s on the other side of the Tagus River in Cacilhas
a tiny port neighborhood you take a ferry to get to that is home to some abandoned factories and adorable feral cats who enjoy uninterrupted views of Lisbon’s very spectacular hills
There are tourists here but far fewer of them
which is a bodega-type café where a guy in a Corona hat who doesn’t speak English will ask you
“Sardinhas?” to which you will respond yes
And he will spend the next 20 minutes seasoning ten plump sardines with a wet chunky salt
grilling the sardines on a small charcoal grill on the sidewalk
asking other passersby the all-important question (“Sardinhas?”)
until he disappears with the sardines inside the best restaurant in Lisbon that’s not quite in Lisbon
After several minutes he will return with a platter of grilled sardines topped with a few slices of boiled waxy potatoes
and what appear to be unripe tomatoes and which are in fact delicious and dressed with lemon and salt
and a beer if you were smart enough to ask for one
There are much prettier places to eat grilled sardines in Lisbon; there are even much prettier places to eat grilled sardines right here in Cacilhas
with A Petisqueira (“The Snackery” or maybe “The Snack Shop”?) on its awning
is the best because I found it and I loved it
I came to Lisbon to see if I could get to the heart of why this city is the new “It” destination and why Portuguese is the new “It” cuisine that’s having such a big Moment on the world’s culinary stage
I should take this opportunity to make clear that I had no idea that Portuguese food had suddenly become so cool because I have a 20-month-old baby and I have stopped caring about most things that sound like that last sentence
But I assured the editors at this magazine that I could handle the assignment and now it’s too late for them to do anything about it
along and we ditched our baby with the grandparents to give it our best shot
and the guy in the Corona hat has no idea that he is the chef at the best restaurant in the city
let alone the restaurant at the epicenter of one of the most exciting food trends
because his restaurant is totally unremarkable in Lisbon
an American magazine says this is the best restaurant in Lisbon!” he would probably call to his wife who works the register and is always busting his balls about how they’ll pay rent
or how they’ll keep their daughter from marrying Carlinhos the Uber driver who has no interest in working at the store
and he’ll sit down in a chair next to the grill and say
The best!” Only he’ll say it in Portuguese and then he’ll take off his Corona hat to wipe his brow
flip the rack that is holding ten plump sardines for his buddies that came in for lunch
it would be the bifana: thin slices of griddled pork on a squishy bun
Lisbon is full of tiny cobblestone streets that open up to the occasional grand boulevard or ridiculously beautiful panoramic view of the river
and sometimes people smoke cigarettes in nice restaurants
and instead of Vespas there are tuk tuks (basically motorcycles with minivans on the back
But I couldn’t shake the feeling that if many people in Lisbon are thrilled that literal exponential increases in tourists have done something good for the hospitality industry
there are just as many watching their beloved Lisbon get spruced up and sanitized at the expense of the people who actually live there
It doesn’t take long wandering around Alfama
and seeing a few of the tags that say “Tourists Suck,” or some less elegant suggestions for what Airbnb should do
scrawled on the walls of adorable alleys to understand that being trendy can take a toll
But you need to walk only a little farther down that adorable alley
to find an old lady sitting in a doorway selling shots of ginjinha
you are my grandson now and I love you,” to feel welcome and a little drunk and like you are exactly where you need to be at that moment
Or get a beer and petisco (which is a category of snack
or a combination of those three things) while staring up at a castle and try to figure out how not to go back to New York City
We hadn’t come up with an answer before we got hungry again, so we went to Cantinho do Aziz
and her tiny restaurant in the Mouraria neighborhood serves food that is influenced by a few of the countries that were colonized by the Portuguese Empire
And while it’s tempting to act like a food writer and suggest I know exactly the historical gastronomic path that brought palm oil and green plantains into the sensational shrimp stew called miamba wa macua
a chutney-like spread of mashed onions and cilantro
maybe this is the best restaurant in Lisbon
Though I don’t think this is the food that Bon Appétit was talking about when they asked for this article
but because even I would have noticed if Mozambican-Goan-influenced Portuguese food was having a Moment since that would frankly be one of the coolest things ever
Clams with garlic sauce at Cervejaria Ramiro
A lot of people would tell you that the best restaurant in Lisbon is Cervejaria Ramiro
It’s like the Peter Luger of seafood restaurants
boasts a menu of extremely simple seafood preparations
You are invited to get drunk while you wait a long time to be seated
you are hustled into a very brightly lit room with long communal tables where a waiter seems surprised that you don’t know what you want to eat
and then you are brought what look like cartoon versions of the most beautiful crustaceans and mollusks you’ve ever eaten in your life: tiny shrimp sizzling in a ton of olive oil with garlic threatening to get too dark; enormous shrimp
and with a bottle of mayonnaise that tasted more exciting than mayonnaise
and there is a middle section about two inches long that is also full of meat
and the head has some guts and a lot more meat
It’s like a lobster but with extra lobster in it
This is the kind of seafood excitement that happens at Ramiro
I said I didn’t realize that Portuguese food was cool
What I also didn’t realize until I got to Lisbon was how little the people in Lisbon seem to care
they are not interested in telling you about which fisherman caught that crab or how it is prepared
sitting next to a tank of enormous rock lobsters
and every time one is pulled out she gets splashed a little and you love her a little bit more each time even though you are also mentally reminding yourself to wash your hands if you happen to touch her beautiful hair and then your rock lobster comes out and it is so magnificent and full of extra lobster
And you just can’t write all of that on a menu
We walked in while Portugal was playing Iran in the World Cup and everybody in Lisbon was in the Praça do Comércio
The owner jokingly invited us to sit in the back and watch the game with him and his cook
not realizing that for the purposes of this story
and also because I enjoy sitting and drinking in the backs of restaurants with the staff
He got me to try some port without the tonic and it was wonderful
As was his rendition of cod with chickpeas
which involved boiling the salt cod before giving it a good drizzle of olive oil and serving it with chickpea purée and toast
While everybody in Portugal was watching the world’s most popular sport
I was consuming Portugal’s favorite things
Among the almost comically perfect crustaceans at Ramiro: these giant prawns
and which is conveniently located in the heart of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood
it won’t be as good as the one I had at the best restaurant in Lisbon: O Magano
The restaurant had white tablecloths and different shapes of wine glasses and every customer was smoking cigarettes
The porto tónicos were big and juicy and so perfect alongside a fava bean and Portuguese sausage salad that I almost flipped the table over and walked out (does that ever happen to you?)
We stayed for the grilled fish for two (we asked for a smaller portion and got grilled fish for four to six instead)
and for dessert we ordered a cake-shaped thing that tasted like layers of raw egg yolk thickened with sugar and it was incredible even though it sounds a bit disgusting
But O Magano was not cool in the way that trendy things like windbreakers are cool (sorry
I just realized that I don’t have any idea what is cool!)
It was deeply cool because it was not trying to be cool
The iconic egg tarts at Pastéis de Belém
Anybody who has ever been to Portugal will tell you all about them the moment you mention that you are considering going to Portugal
and they are one of the coolest pastries I’ve ever had
The pastry has a flaky crust and is filled with a sweet
eggy custard that has been baked pretty dark
almost like crème brûlée inside a croissant
and I challenge you to describe something that sounds more delicious than that
When asked what else we should try at Lisbon’s most famous old pastéis de nata bakery
the cashier suggested I try a pastel de bacalhau
a cod fritter that was served a little warmer than room temperature
And if a room-temp cod fritter for breakfast sounds better to you than crème brûlée in a croissant
then you are a lot more like me than you realize
We walked around and stopped at a little fruit store
and I tried to buy one perfect and tiny apricot and the lady just gave it to me because she didn’t feel like making change and I asked her to be my grandmother but she didn’t speak English and Katherine agreed that it was a very delicious apricot
pastéis de bacalhau are exceptional and I wish that they would come have a Moment at a place near my apartment in Brooklyn
It’s on a quiet street near the top of the hill in Graça
Damas felt cooler than any place we’d been on the trip
with a hip café up front and a music venue in the back
We ate a bowl of shell-on shrimp covered in garlic and chiles and with a lime to squeeze
We also had a dish of veal with a giardiniera-like mix of pickled carrots
which wasn’t super hard to do as I was wearing some little vacation-y ankle socks

2019 at 4:37 pm PT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Ashley Marie Oliver was arrested and is accused of felony DUI in connection with Armando Canales' death
(Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department)SAN JOSE
CA — A San Jose woman charged in the death of a 17-year-old Fremont boy on state Highway 17 early Saturday was arraigned Wednesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court
has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI causing injury in the crash that killed Armando Canales and injured four other victims
Oliver appeared in court in San Jose in a wheelchair after being hospitalized for major injuries from the crash and did not enter a plea
Both Oliver's and Canales' families were present at Wednesday's hearing
rose from their seats to show Judge Ronald Toff that they were in attendance
Oliver faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison
despite initial pushback from Deputy District Attorney Heather Melton who wanted her held on no-bail status
Melton said after the arraignment that Toff's decision was reasonable
"I'm completely broken -- he was my everything," said Tina Cacilhas
who was in favor of no bail and wants a maximum sentence for Oliver
Cacilhas said she last spoke to her son at about 11:30 p.m
after he had gone to hang out with friends and asked to spend the night
She said he always checked in when he was late
Canales was a junior and a football player at Washington High School, and a fire technology student at Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program. A GoFundMe donation page at https://www.gofundme.com/arman set up for his funeral expenses has raised over $16,000 of its $10,000 goal this week.
"She took my son's life, and all my son ever wanted was to be was a firefighter," Cacilhas said. "His life was taken way too short, didn't get to get his license, didn't get to see graduation, everything just down the drain."
Canales was riding in the backseat of a Toyota Corolla with four other people at about 2 a.m. when the car was hit head-on by Oliver, according to the California Highway Patrol. She was driving the wrong way on southbound Highway 17 just south of Redwood Estates in unincorporated Santa Clara County, and Melton said her blood alcohol content was above the legal level.
"As a mother, my heart breaks for Tina Cacilhas," Melton said. "The loss of Armando is immeasurable."
The case is still under investigation by the CHP. Oliver is being represented by the county public defender's office and will next appear in court for a plea hearing on May 23.
Mon, 28 Feb 2011 15:37:46 GMT — A Utica man is facing a slew of charges following a domestic dispute. It happened around 5:45 a.m. Saturday in the Williams Trailer Park in the Town of Bridgewater.
Justin Cacilhas, of Lenox Avenue, is charged with assault, strangulation, criminal mischief, unlawful imprisonment and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Cacilhas was arraigned in the Town of Bridgewater Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash/bond. He is scheduled to reappear back in court tonight.
Windsor police are now investigating their ninth murder of the year
A 36-year-old man, who fell from the Ivy Rose hotel balcony on Howard Avenue early Monday morning, has now passed away.
Police were called when the man was critically injured after allegedly being dropped from the second floor of the building.
Sergeant Steve Betteridge says police quicky determined a crime had been committed.
"Originally it was, somebody had dropped from a balcony and from that, an investigation was launched to find out what happened and early on, it was determined there could be a criminal element involved with this," he says.
Robert Legebow, 19, of Windsor has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The ninth murder investigation came just two days after police were investigating a death early Saturday.
Officers were called to an apartment building at 395 University Ave. E. near McDougall St. for a sick or injured person at around 4am Saturday.
When they arrived, they found 37-year-old Windsor man dead and showing, "obvious signs of trauma."
Investigators tracked down two suspects Saturday.
Windsor's Lamar Day, 28, is charged with first degree murder and forcible confinement.
Raheem Washington, a 25-year-old man from Windsor, is charged with first degree murder, forcible confinement, and numerous charges for breaching conditions and failing to appear in court.

The cycle path linking Cacilhas to Cova da Piedade, along Avenida Aliança Povo MFA, was improved at the beginning of the year. The municipality put up bollards and painted the intersections, but those who use bicycles as a means of transportation would have liked to have seen more ambitious work.
Between very close to the Cacilhas transport terminal and the urban area of Cova da Piedade/Centro Sul, there is a cycle path that is either on the road or on the sidewalk, shared with pedestrians. The trail was created more than two decades ago and a section of it was recently refurbished by Almada Town Council, following a Participatory Budget.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Câmara Municipal de Almada (@cmalmada)
it is essential to improve bicycle circulation between Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade/Centro Sul
"two important public transport hubs"with which two wheels can interact and complement each other
"We need to radically improve the safety conditions on this route
which are currently non-existent"points to FFP
"That was the reason for the Participatory Budgeting proposal."
Margarida called for the rehabilitation of the cycle route between Cacilhas and Centro Sul
but also through the sections where the cycle path is on the sidewalk
sharing (and conflicting) with pedestrians
differentiated and raised road surface was suggested so that it wouldn't blend in with the road and would allow for efficient water drainage
"It will allow people of all ages to cycle safely and comfortably between the residential areas of Cova da Piedade
as well as improving the tourism offer in the municipality."Margarida wrote in the text of the proposal
the 30-year-old believes that "sustainable mobility is a prerequisite for the attractiveness and success of any municipality" and he has no doubt that there is a safe corridor between Cacilhas and the South Center
"it will motivate a large number of future practitioners"
"The demand for sustainable mobility has had greater support in other municipalities
visible with the adaptation of existing roads to these new forms of light mobility
The redevelopment of Avenida Aliança Povo MFA meets some of the objectives of the Participatory Budget and was framed within this framework
with a dedicated budget of around 50,000 euros; but it is still a less ambitious project than the original proposal to establish a continuous and coherent corridor along a central area of the municipality of Almad
the rehabilitated section "it doesn't even reach the Cacilhas transport interface
And they say: "It's an infrastructure that becomes insecure because it doesn't connect anything to anything." They criticize the fact that nothing has been done to solve one of the infrastructure's long-standing problems: the shortcomings in terms of rainwater drainage
the bike lane is the only part of the avenue that gets flooded
making it difficult for bikes to circulate even on sunny days
"The improvement of the cycle path should take this into account
because in winter cyclists often ride on the road due to the cycle path being flooded"they point out
"One of the improvements we've noticed is that with the installation of the bollards there seems to be a perception that the road is less wide and
the buses go at a lower speed than 60/70kmh."they note
One of the most substantial criticisms is the fact that
when Largo de Cacilhas was redeveloped and completed in 2023
there was no direct cycle connection to the river and bus terminal
a group of urban cyclists from Almada sent the council recommendations to this effect
but received no response from the municipality
where the abusive parking of cars on top of a cycling counter-flow has effectively disabled connectivity between Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade/Parque da Paz/Centro Sul
"We need to raise awareness and work on solutions with residents and local businesses (car repair shops
WeMob should intensify and extend its enforcement hours so that sidewalks aren't always occupied by cars."
Anyone who uses a bicycle to get around the municipality of Almada
whether or not they do so in conjunction with public transport
would like to feel that the municipality is committed to the national targets for cycling mobility set out in the National Strategy for Active Cycling Mobility (ENMAC)
You have no doubt that "will not reach the ENMAC targets
which foresee a 4% share of cycling trips in the city of Almada by 2025 and 10% by 2030"
it will rehabilitate the axis between Trafaria and Costa da Caparica
as well as the such as the axis between Cacilhas
which includes this stretch of Avenida Aliança Povo MFA

A Lisboner who is a Lisboner likes to "esplanade"
If you’re always looking for the perfect terrace
it’s probably on this list of the best terraces overlooking the Tagus
which can calm down any tiring day at work
O Tagus, of course
it’s almost always the best of scenarios
so we’ve chosen 10 places where you can get up in the air
the kind where you feel like spending the whole day
It’s in South and Southeast River Station and is one of the newest terraces overlooking the Tagus in Lisbon
especially if you’re looking for a place to relax while admiring our river
It has three areas: one indoors and two outdoors
and in these two outdoor areas you have the terrace part with restaurant service
where you can sample a full menu of drinks and cocktails
But near the Tagus is the part we liked the most: sun loungers that allow you to feel the breeze of the Tagus while enjoying a very interesting gastronomic offer
Address: Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 1C (next to the Sul e Sueste River Station)
This really is one of those special places that you only find when someone tells you it’s really spectacular
or when you accidentally come across it while walking by the Champalimaud Foundation
Ala B (next to the Champalimaud Foundation in Belém)
has one of the best terraces overlooking the Tagus River in Lisbon
To this must be added a series of ingredients that make this space incredible and unique
Y ou’re welcome here at any time of day: for a panoramic lunch
During the summer you’ll want to stay cool
but Catch Me is also irresistible on colder or more blustery days
thanks to a glass terrace that offers the same views and that unique atmosphere at any time of year
Address: Rua Jardim 9 de Abril (in Santos
next to the National Museum of Ancient Art)
take advantage of one of the upcoming hot days to enjoy a refreshing drink on this terrace facing the city
but we make a point of mentioning this terrace because its proximity to the river makes it one of the most attractive in the city
In addition to the privileged views of the Tagus and the 25 de Abril Bridge, has that unique atmosphere that always makes you feel like you’re on vacation
also has a number of snacks and appetizers to fill your stomach
Located in Palacete O`Neill, in the discreet Travessa do Ferragial, is one of the best kept secrets in the world chiado area.
starting with its name: although everyone calls it the Nuns’ Canteen
it is in fact the canteen of the A.C.I.S.J.F
(International Catholic Association for the Service of Girls’ Youth)
which are much lower than the average in that area of Lisbon
this self-service also hides a terrace with incredible views
With the houses of the historic area in the foreground and the Tagus in the background
it’s perfect for those who like new perspectives of the city
the ones that don’t appear every day in the tourist brochures
Address: Travessa do Ferragial 1 (Chiado)
On the south bank, in Cacilhas, there are also several terraces with the Tagus as a backdrop
the grilled fish and the codfish pataniscas with bean rice
Whether for a meal or simply a drink or coffee
Address: Rua do Ginjal 72 (Cacilhas/Almada)
With a décor based on wood and intense vegetation
when you’re in the Park you almost feel like you’re in a sunny forest
The view of the city and the Tagus River from the terrace is very pleasant
the best thing is to cool off with a good imperial and the breeze from our river
This terrace is just three meters from the Tagus
The Miradouro de Santa Catarina is better known as Adamastor
And here you’ll also find a spectacular terrace served by the viewpoint kiosk
a place where friends gather for drinks while listening to good music and admiring the Tagus River in the background
It’s also from here that you can see Lisbon’s port area
and the beautiful 25 de Abril Bridge and the imposing statue of Adamastor
the figure made famous by Luís Vaz de Camões in “Os Lusíadas”
Este é o guia que precisas para descobrir as melhores esplanadas em Lisboa
2019 at 9:25 pm PT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Armando Canales died early Saturday morning (Go Fund Me)FREMONT
CA — A candlelight vigil drew a large gathering at Washington High School in Fremont Monday night for 16-year old Armando Canales who was killed in a crash on Highway 17 over the weekend
and she spoke bluntly to her son's fellow students
"My message to you all is be cautious what you do," she said
you're going to get into the car with someone who's drinking?Remember -- this could easily have been you
Take the message: do not drink and drive."
A 28-year-old San Jose woman was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter in Canales' death
was driving a Chrysler minivan in the wrong direction on Highway 17 just south of Redwood Estates shortly after 2 a.m
Saturday when she crashed into a Toyota Corolla carrying five teens
according to the California Highway Patrol
Canales was riding in the backseat of the Corolla
The girl driving the car and two female passengers

The remaining male passenger suffered minor injuries

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Armando Canales' passing
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” MVROP Superintendent Hanson shared
“It is difficult for us to grasp this loss as we focus on assisting students and staff who are trying deal with this terrible news.”

a bully doesn’t have to name you directly for your classmates to know that nasty tweet or text is about you
You feared it might be — and now the gossip and the giggling in the hall confirm it
“It hurts more now because it just feels like it’s secretive
but everyone knows what it is,” Catholic Central high school student Melissa Fares said Monday

If before there were 83 connections per direction
between Almada (Cacilhas) and Lisbon (Cais do Sodré)
there were seven boats from Lisbon to Almada
TTSL (Transtejo Soflusa) has reduced the number of river connections between Cais do Sodré and Cacilhas on weekdays by 23%
The new timetables will remain in place until June 22
If before there were 83 connections per direction, there are now only 64. A comparison between the old timetables and the new (which will be temporary) allows you to visualize this reduction:
in the most critical period of the morning
there will be 22 boats between Almada and Lisbon when before there were 30
A reduction of 27% which may make a difference in the lives of many passengers
that in practice some of the scheduled timetables were already not taking place
as Lisboa Para Pessoas heard from some passengers
The new schedules will show that the existing problems at TTSL are more permanent and less temporary - at least for a month. It is known that the river operator has had significant difficulties in fleet and employee levelsThis has made it impossible for the company to guarantee regular service between the two banks of the Tagus
3250 careers in Transtejo will have been suppressed due to inoperable ships and around 1750 careers due to the lack of workers
Coastal and Merchant Marine Transport Union (STFCMM) said that "in 2018
the Transtejo Softlusa fleet together totaled 26 ships
19 pontoons and nine passenger access terminals
there are only 14 operational ships and 12 certified pontoons (many are no longer certified)
either by aging or unrecoverable breakdowns
The remaining ships serve as parts for those in operation"
Back to the day-to-day. Until next June 22nd, the new schedules between Lisbon (Cais do Sodré) and Almada (Cacilhas) are
The changes do not affect the weekend days and holidays
whose schedules remain the same and whose offer is now similar to that of weekdays
Note that even though, according to the Carris Metropolitana websiteno changes were made to the lines serving Cacilhas to match the bus departures to the new temporary arrival times of the boats at the river terminal
as well as MTS and Fertagus may be alternatives to river transport to get from Almada to Lisbon (or vice versa)

although there is room for 12 more in the hold
says that the new fleet will allow the "transport of a minimum of 20 bicycles" and that there is no point in messing with the current supply
Only when the fleet of TTSL (Transtejo/Soflusa) cacilheiros is renewed will bicycle transportation between Almada and Lisbon be reinforced
In a clarification from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action
it was learned that "the future electric catamaran fleet is expected to transport a minimum of 20 bicycles on each regular trip
depending on the increase in the need for bicycle transportation"
Although bicycles are allowed and free of charge between the two banks of the Tagus on the public boats of TTSL (Transtejo/Soflusa)
On the catamarans that make the connection between Barreiro
it is already possible to take nine bicycles
these limits on the number of bicycles allowed may vary depending on the vessels that are put into service
14 bicycles can already be transported; but in the case of catamarans Pedro Nunes e Cesário Verde making the connection between Seixal or Montijo and Lisbon
the limitation drops from nine to six bicycles
Only on the ferries that make the Trafaria - Porto Brandão - Belém line is it possible to transport a few dozen bicycles: 30 to be concrete
But that's if you don't have the misfortune to catch a ferry with room for only four cyclists
According to the Ministry headed by Duarte Cordeiro
characteristics and operating specificities
it can carry up to four bicycles on each regular trip"In special situations
such as mobility events or sporting events
TTSL usually extends the limit to 20 bicycles per trip
"It does not seem feasible in the short term to increase the legal capacity in force
given the last maritime operational resources and the technical constraints in the maintenance of the current fleet
which will be discontinued in the near future
with the entry into operation of the future electric catamaran fleet."The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action also reports
On October 6thIn a statement
thirteen Socialist MEPs left four questions for Duarte Cordeiro
including "what is being done to increase the capacity for transporting bicycles on vessels" and if "considers the Government to reinforce the crew or adapt existing vessels to increase the capacity to transport bicycles"
Members argued that "The vessels that transport citizens from Cacilhas to Cais do Sodré were adapted in 2015 and are authorized by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources
Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) to carry four bicycles in forward gangways
plus 12 bicycles in the vessel's hold room
the use of the hold room is only allowed with an extra crew member to support the loading and unloading of bicycles through the stairs to the hold
it would be essential to ensure that either the crew is reinforced
or that the vessels are adapted so that the DGRM license allows transport without the need to reinforce the crew".
the transport of bicycles on the cacilheiros is limited to four vehicles because only the forward portal is available for that purposeand not also the ship's hold room - where a TTSL crew member would be needed for the operation
an environmental engineer and cycling commuter
says he has even taken his bike in the hold of the cacilheiros
"They only let you when they have an extra worker on that shift to help specifically with the descent into the basement
which has to be requested in advance"tells Lisboa Para Pessoas
and they made that limitation: you need a worker to help
maybe because the stairs are so steep and because they have to put a little ramp/climb."
"Transtejo is required to adapt its current and future fleet to the needs of these users by increasing the number of bicycles allowed per vessel."
If TTSL's ferries could each carry at least 12 more bikes - i.e
a total of 16 bikes per trip - already today
the ministry that oversees the river company wants to get rid of the bikes
We are talking about 10 electric propulsion vessels being specifically designed for TTSL's operating needsThey are the result of a specific execution project
The contract for the supply of the new boats was signed with the Asturian shipyard Gondán in February 2021
following an international public tender launched in early 2020
Initially, the first electric catamaran was scheduled to arrive in April this year and three more by the end of the year but, sccording to statements made by TTSL to the Lusa agency earlier this monththe first four ships are due to be delivered between December this year and June 2023Another four by the end of 2023 and the last two in 2024
the entry into service of the new electric catamarans "will take place after their arrival and the formation of their crews"
TTSL will still need to have the batteries for the boats and the charging stations on its side - both acquisitions are already contracted
as recently assured by the Secretary of State for Urban Mobility
"We believe that during the year 2023 the renewal of Transtejo's fleet will happen
I don't know if we will be able to have the 10 ships here
but we believe that a large part of it will arrive"he told MPs at a hearing to discuss the draft state budget for 2023

The fire that broke out on Tuesday (21 January) night and destroyed a restaurant on Cabana do Pescador Beach, in Costa da Caparica, Almada municipality, was declared under control at 00:10 today.
The commander of the Cacilhas Volunteer Firefighters, Maximino Viegas, highlighted in statements to journalists at the scene that the fire was declared under control at 00:10 today and that the operators would move on to the aftermath phase.
"The resources will be used until there is no longer any active flame, then the debris will be removed," he said at 00:30 today, saying that 48 operators, supported by 17 vehicles, were on site.
Maximino Viegas highlighted that when the resources were called to the fire, which was reported at 10:25 pm on Tuesday, the space was already completely engulfed in flames.
The restaurant is located close to the beach, which made access difficult, he added.
Asked by journalists if the fire started because of the storm, the fire chief highlighted that it is up to the entities to carry out the investigation now.

The development plan for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) issued by the central government in February said the GBA will establish 12 service centers for Hong Kong and Macau’s young entrepreneurs to start their business and innovation.
“The GBA gives me hope that the metropolitan network can provide ideal resource, such as sufficient employees, broad market and production partner,” said a young entrepreneur in Macau.
At 8:00 am local time, when most Macau residents just wake up for their day, Lei Zhen already left his home at Estrada de Cacilhas (Road Cacilhas), eastern Macau Peninsula for his company in neighboring city of Zhuhai. One hour later, he arrived at his office at Zhuhai National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, where he had set up Zhuhai Nanometals Technology to develop nano flexible transparent conductive material.
Graduated from School of Material Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Lei chose to set his startup in Zhuhai, a city not far from home and supportive of his career.
“The life in Macau is quite similar to other Chinese cities, in terms of daily life, food and culture. Macau SAR government has many policies to support startups, but it’s better to set up the lab and manufacture base in Zhuhai,” Lei said.
Lei has been a member of Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre for years and received legal, financial and operational assistance for his nano products.
He had won innovation champions in regional and national contests, and a world champion of 2018 Alibaba Startup Contest. However, he found that Macao’s business environment is not suitable for high-tech manufacture. “Thanks to the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), I have more choice and room in Macao and Zhuhai as a converging area.”
In Zhuhai, his company can access all beneficial policies and regulations designed to encourage startups and high-tech innovation, and most importantly the strong supply chain in Guangdong Province, a hub of China’s manufacture industry.
The development plan for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao GBA issued by the central government in February said the GBA will establish 12 service centers for Hong Kong and Macao’s young entrepreneurs to start their business and innovation.
Governments of Guangdong Province and Macau SAR held a meeting in May this year and decided to form a task group to support Guangdong and Macao’s young startups with promotions and resources.
From July 1, Zhuhai has included Macao residents who currently live in Zhuhai’s Hengqin District into its medical insurance policy. In July, Dongguan, a Guangdong city adjacent to Shenzhen, has issued new policies in its Songshanhu Hi-tech Zone for Hong Kong and Macao talents, including incubation center, intellectual property protection, business partner matching, and housing.
Macao student Ng Hoi Ching is now a sophomore in School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University of China. She chose an incubation center for young startups in Guangzhou for internship this summer, as a product operator in a smart system company.”
The GBA has many institutional innovations, such as Macau residents can participate in health and social insurance, or apply for civil servants in Guangdong Province. There is much room for my future, which attracts me a lot,” she said.
Ng Hoi Ching is one of 45 Macau participants in 2019 Macau Youth GBA Internship Program, hosted by Guangdong Province and Macau SAR governments this summer. They went to incubation centers in Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Zhuhai for two weeks’ internship, a taste for opportunities in GBA.
Li Huiyin was born in Guangzhou and moved to Macau since primary school. After 10 years experience in Macau’s startup business, now she has a fashion magazine and a traditional Chinese clothing brand.
“Macau’s high level of social welfare and income make it very hard for startups to hire local talents. The GBA gives me hope that the metropolitan network can provide ideal resource, such as sufficient employees, broad market and production partner.”
Li’s brand, Macau’s Good Time, has taken its root in a shop near Macau’s tourism icon Ruins of St. Paul, selling traditional Chinese clothing and related products. Her brand had been selected into Macau’s delegation to participate in the first and the second China International Import Expo held in Shanghai in 2018 and 2019.
“After the opening of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, I expect the human resource would flow more easily, and that is the future of Macau startups,” she said

Baía do Tejo site of the South Lisbon Bay developments Editorial Team 16 February 2018
which will be built on the old Lisnave lands in Almada
one of the administrators of Baía do Tejo (BT)
a company in the corporate sector of the state
the Arco Ribeirinho Sul will be totally renovated
The real estate megaproject already has five investors interested and the public bid will open and the end of the semester
which aims to revolutionise the area next to the river Cacilhas
has been approved and published in the Diário da República newspaper since 2009
after a long waiting period characterised by “two steps forward
There are already five investors interested: a Chinese group
a North American group and two consortia composed of Portuguese companies
One of the managers of BT, Sérgio Saraiva, who spoke with idealista/news during a networking trip which took 50 real estate professionals to visit the lands of the Lisbon South Bay, has defended the importance of the project, which will help the Lisbon metropolitan area be recognised internationally.
The project has been on hold for some time
The project was approved in 2009 but the idea of transforming the old warehouse, which stopped all activity in 2000, into a new urban area, is still going strong. Think of the Expo, for example – about what it was and what it is today, and maybe we can identify some common features. Seeing the Expo 98 and that whole area, nobody thought it would be possible to create a “new city” there. Even so, that’s what happened and this project, too, is going to continue.
"Seeing the Expo 98 and that whole area, nobody thought it would be possible to create a ‘new city’ there.”
Yes. Now we are in the promotion phase. A sign that we’re still on the right track is that large international group have shown interest in developing this whole project. We are talking about new icons, about creating new urban areas. We are talking about investors who were interested a year ago and are reaffirming their interest now.
But are there still people who believe in the project?
The thing with this project is that it’s been on hold for a long time and the truth is that this situation has fed disbelief. As such, it’s normal that people’s expectations have dropped but when we bring international investors, and many have come to visit this land, the question of time becomes irrelevant because they have started to see the lands now.
“We believe that in a few years this will be the new icon of Lisbon, like the Expo is today.”
For us, Portuguese citizens who have seen these lands since ages ago, it’s different. Therein lies the importance of Portuguese people visiting [referring to the networking trip promoted by the APPII], so that they too can believe in the project. It’s a bit like a football team, we have to win in the dressing room first to be able to play in the Champions League.
We try to show the Portuguese people that this project really can go forward. We believe that in a few years this will be the new icon of Lisbon, like the Expo is today.
The Cidade da Água will be ready in 10-15 years. Of course, we will have some things ready before that, but that is the expectation. The development period of the project has that temporary horizon. Apart from that, we also want to invest in the rehabilitation of the two business parks (Barreiro and Seixal) to attract more businesses.
“The Cidade da Água will be ready in 10-15 years. Of course, we will have some things ready before that, but that is the expectation.”
What’s more, the possibility of transferring the new airport to the southside is also being studied. It’s another important tool, obviously, and could bring the most out of, and feed into, these projects. Lots of investors ask us when the airport will be ready because it’s a very important factor when it comes to deciding whether to invest here in the Cidade da Água or not.
The projects are complementary. We believe that the Cidade da Água, thanks to its size, has a powerful brand and others will benefit from it.

Moving To LGBT Lisbon? Find the best gay neighbourhood to live in Freepik Editorial Team 1 July 2022
15:00Lisbon continues to be one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world
has long been the preferred place to live for the LGBTI+ community
making it one of the best gay neighbourhoods in Lisbon
and there are other places that stand out on the map of the most sought-after inclusive neighbourhoods to buy or rent a house in Greater Lisbon
The Avenida Almirante Reis area is one of them
while attention is also focused on the South Bank
And if you're planning to move to LGBT-friendly Lisbon
how much does it cost to buy or rent a house in the best gay neighbourhoods
continues to be an inclusive area par excellence
because "many of the main and most iconic businesses" frequented by the community are still located in this area
The consultant highlights the centrality of the neighbourhood
multiculturalism and proximity to areas such as Chiado
"as a result of growing real estate speculation that has caused prices in this area to become unaffordable
at least for the national LGBTI+ community," he points out
Data from idealista/data shows that the Misericórdia parish remains one of the most expensive in Lisbon to live in
despite a cooling of prices in the market between 2020 and 2021
Property prices in Misericórdia: unit price in euros/m2 and price in euros idealista/data"In the last year
this is a parish that has registered a strong demand from the market
Note that only between 2020 and 2021 did this indicator fall
only in the last year there was a drop in volume with -40% in the purchase and sale market and 80% in the rental market"
according to the analysis of the specialists at idealista/data
Rental prices in Misericórdia: unit price in euros/m2/month and price in euros idealista/dataSanto António, gay friendly but one of the most expensive in LisbonAnalysing the most inclusive areas, and given the geographical proximity to the parish of Misericórdia, João Passos also highlights the parish of Santo António
which is also one of the most expensive to buy or rent
prices have increased in the last four years
prices for the buying and selling market have increased around 12%
Property prices in Santo António: unit price in euros/m2 and price in euros idealista/data"The demand relative to this parish shows a generally increasing trend of the indicator with relevance for the period between 2020 and 2021 in the purchase and sale market (+130%) and for the period between 2022 and 2021 in the rental market (+358%)
Also in this parish of Lisbon there has been in the last year a fall in the volume of supply
-25% in the purchase and sale market and -59% in the rental market"
indicate from the data specialists at idealista
prices on the buying and selling market are observing an upward trend
The only exception was in the period between 2020 and 2021 in which the unit price practically remained stable and the overall price fell by 9%
Property prices in Arroios: unit price in euros/m2 and price in euros idealista/data"In the rental market
we verify that only in the last year did prices increase
we can see that the parish is very dynamic in the buying and selling market
only in the last year has there been a notable growth of over 300%
in both markets there was a drop in the last year
-37% in the buying and selling market and -59% in the renting market"
indicates the analysis of the specialists of idealista/data
Rental prices in Arroios: unit price in euros/m2/month and price in euros idealista/dataThe behaviour in the parish of Penha de França was similar in terms of prices
idealista/data points out "a clear cooling down in the period between 2020 and 2021
the data shows a positive variation of this indicator over the last four years in the buying and selling market
the record in recent years has been of a fall
Last year, João Passos had already identified Lisbon's South Bank (Margem Sul) as a destination of special interest for the LGBTI+ community, and the trend continues. At a short distance from Lisbon, Almada and Caparica are emerging areas
characterised by their proximity to beaches
"The dream of having a house in the country or on the beach is increasingly becoming a reality
motivated by the search for a certain return to origins and a more sustainable lifestyle
supported by the new possibilities of remote work," explains the real estate consultant
UnsplashIn the Trafaria and Caparica area for example
the trend in market prices has been upwards in recent years
and despite some cooling off between 2020 and 2021
there has also been a rise in prices in recent years in practically all areas
Property prices Trafaria and Caparica: unit price in euros/m2 and price in euros idealista/data"The apparent slight drop in unit price of -7% and in global price of -12% verified in the last year for the total residential market was due to negative price variations verified in the typology T0 for which the sample is not representative
These numbers highlight the importance of a detailed analysis of the available market information
especially in the rental market where supply is scarce"
Rental prices in Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal and Cacilhas: unit price in euros/m2/month and price in euros idealista/dataJoão Passos believes that the appetite for all these gay-friendly areas in Lisbon remains and even believes that it has a tendency to increase, "whether in the more urban centres, for a more national and younger community, or near the beaches, for a more international and adult segment, in a retirement or investment perspective," he concludes.

They debated leaving behind friends and family
entering a job market she was not yet certified in
But they decided the money was too enticing — especially if Wendy wanted the swanky wedding she envisioned
they counted down lonely days until their Aug
1 wedding and planned details while thousands of kilometres apart
“It’s weird because people say ‘just get your fiance to have a look and let me know,’ but I can’t do that
Wedding planning loses some of its lustre when you’re doing it yourself,” Wendy said
but then return to Hamilton in January and live with her parents while she teaches until she’s built up enough time to take a leave of absence
it sucks that I’m going to have a part-time wife
but we did what was good for my career and now we have to do what’s good for yours.”
many gen-Yers share Rob and Wendy’s willingness to just “go-for-it.”
but we threw it by the wayside,” Wendy said
why should that stop us from having the wedding we want?”
But savers Rob and Wendy may be the exception to the gen-Y rule
Many gen-Yers are not changing wedding plans
but creatively scaling down their weddings
I am maid-of honour in Jen Waters and Alan Cherneski’s wedding
which is fitting since I was the third wheel on their first date four years ago
Alan ordered Jen a replica of a Tiffany ring she had not so subtly pointed out last July
But he had not forked over any money yet when he received the worst news a guy on the brink of a huge diamond investment could hear — he was being laid off
“I guess this means we’re not getting married?” Alan said “no,” but talked it over with a friend who convinced him he shouldn’t let his former employer affect his decisions
He went ahead with his plans and paid for the ring
“I was definitely pretty stressed out about it
because I didn’t work for all of August and September
“I wasn’t going to propose until I got a new job
I thought it’d be very anticlimactic to give a multi-thousand dollar ring and be jobless.”
So when he bent down on one knee that autumn day
Intent on keeping their dream wedding intact
Jen and Alan are in the final throes of budgeted wedding planning for their August wedding
“I could have pulled the chute on the ring
but who knows what’s gonna happen after that — I may as well jack up a huge debt and go for it.”
They agree the first few months of their engagement amounted to the toughest challenge they’d ever faced
He used the time off to volunteer at an elementary school and go back to teachers’ college
“I have a huge tuition payment and still don’t have a job
I’m still worried but I’m happy we’re making the next step,” he explained
Planning a wedding on a budget means you have to be patient and persistent
Jen once dragged me on a fact-finding shopping trip to compare the price of vases for centrepieces she’s assembling herself
Fuchsia Gerber daisies will be sitting in $1 dollar-store vases that are indistinguishable from overpriced vases
She’s getting married in her hometown of Strathroy
Her sister-in-law is making a ring bearer pillow
Getting alterations in her small town saved another $350

that we were meant to do or experience something
Coincidences happen all the time and we usually don’t think anything of it
the planets align a little too perfectly for things to be chalked up as mere happenstance
I’ll tell you later why I think we were destined to have our last meal in Europe here at Ponto Final, but in the meantime, check out these photos from what has to be one of the most unique and memorable restaurants in Lisbon
We learned about Ponto Final from the very entertaining Lisbon episode of Somebody Feel Phil on Netflix
Click on the red save button and pin it for later
Ponto Final is a Portuguese waterfront restaurant in Almada, just across the Tagus River from Lisbon
you’ll need to take a 20-minute ferry ride from the Cais do Sodré ferry terminal in Lisbon
After disembarking the ferry at Cacilhas terminal
you’ll need to walk about a kilometer along a pier by a row of what look like abandoned warehouses
then there’s no way you’d ever think there’d be a restaurant at the end of that pier
Its odd location definitely adds to the experience
On the walls of the abandoned buildings are some pretty great examples of street art
It was way too hot for us to appreciate them so we enjoyed them on the walk back
I’ll tell you the story at the bottom of this post
but we weren’t hopeful of getting a dinner table at Ponto Final
we were planning on just stopping by and taking a few pictures before hopping on the ferry back to Lisbon
we ordered a bottle of vinho verde to enjoy with our meal
Vinho verde refers to wine produced in the Minho province of northern Portugal
The term vinho verde literally means “green wine”
Vinho verde wines are typically consumed just 3-6 months after the grapes are harvested
tables and chairs at Ponto Final are just inches away from the platform’s edge
This was our first time trying monkfish which is a type of anglerfish found in the Atlantic and Indian oceans
Characterized by a broad flat head and jaws armed with bands of long
what it lacks in good looks it more than makes up for in taste and texture
Our server was surprised to find out we were from the Philippines
I guess not as many Filipinos make it out here
He asked how we found out about Ponto Final so we told him about the Lisbon episode of Somebody Feed Phil
“We get a lot of Americans and Australians because of that show.”
With that said, be careful what you order. Our monkfish stew was great but according to their TripAdvisor reviews
Ren’s cousin ate here the night before and didn’t enjoy her meal as much as we did
A quick tip, they’ll serve you an unsolicited set of appetizers at the start of your meal, things like octopus salad, bread
Not sure if this is a cultural thing but it happened to us twice in Lisbon
They’ll tell you that you can eat it if you want but what they don’t mention
You’ll notice them surreptitiously added to your bill at the end of your meal
The 25 de Abril Bridge is a lovely suspension bridge and looks very much like the Golden Gate in San Francisco
I don’t know if there’s a cafe or bar nearby
but just before reaching the ferry terminal was this cluster of sofas and tables with young locals hanging about
Some were playing guitar and singing while others were just chatting and enjoying the evening atmosphere
we weren’t hopeful we could get a table here
I made lunch reservations for the same day weeks before our trip to Portugal
It looked so lovely on Somebody Feed Phil that it seemed the perfect way to end our 5-week trip through Europe
We were in Lisbon with seven other people so I made reservations for nine
the person responding to my email advised that they’d be able to seat us outside
but not on the platform like we wanted because those are limited to groups of just 2-4 people
This was probably the one meal I was most looking forward to in Europe
Ren’s cousin who couldn’t join us for lunch on the intended day decided to eat here on her own the night before
She wound up ordering the wrong things and was underwhelmed by the food so she advised the group not to go
I didn’t want to be blamed for a subpar experience so I emailed the restaurant to cancel on the morning of our reservation
We were super bummed because we were really looking forward to eating at Ponto Final
we decided to take the ferry out to Almada on our own
We’d walk around town and enjoy our last day in Portugal before making a quick stop at the restaurant just to see the place
We knew it’d be impossible to get dinner reservations on such short notice
the host advised us of a two-hour wait for a table outside
We would have been seated immediately had we agreed to a table inside but we were there for the view
I was about to snap a few photos before leaving when minutes later
the host approached us and told us that someone had just cancelled via email
but no more than five minutes must have elapsed from the time we approached the host and the moment we were seated at the platform table we always wanted
And why did he offer it to us instead of all the people already on the list
We didn’t bother asking questions and just chose to look at it as a mini miracle
Ren’s mother passed away last year and we like to think she had something to do with this
They were super close and Ren spent the last four years dutifully caring for her
Every time something good like this happens
she’s convinced her mother has something to do with it
Chalk it up to divine intervention or just dumb luck
but thanks to the events leading up to tonight
we got to enjoy the perfect meal at the place and setting we always wanted
I honestly couldn’t have scripted a better ending to our Europe trip than this
HOW TO GET THERE: Make your way to Cais do Sodre Ferry Terminal
Take the ferry to Cacilhas (EUR 1.25 each way)
Make a right after exiting the terminal and walk the entire length of the pier to Ponto Final

I'm going to try and make reservations for our upcoming trip in March
And I love your note at the end - dumb luck or divine intervention..
Hope you have an amazing time at Ponto Final and in Lisbon
We visited this restaurant on a "Foodie Tour" while visiting Portugal in May of 2023
The walk to get to the restaurant was not too long from the ferry across the river
but at least 1/3 of the walk there was along a very narrow sea wall
The walkway was no more than 2 feet wide at least 1/3 of the way with the heavily graphitied wall at your shoulder and the shipping channel to your right
There is no guard/hand rail at all and it would be easy to stumble and fall into the river
It was hard to enjoy my lunch knowing that I needed to retrace my steps back to the ferry
I had to keep telling myself that the walkway widened as we got nearer the ferry station
I kept looking down and running my hand against the wall to try to keep my balance
I think guests should be warned before taking that harrowing walk to the restaurant
Apparently there's another way to get there
but it's down/up a seriously steep hill that was equally rocky making tripping and falling a terrifying prospect
no handrails on which to steady one's self
I'm sorry to hear you had a terrifying experience
I don't remember the walk being too precarious but the path may have deteriorated since our last visit
good suggestion on telling people about the walk
Would love to visit and be seated outdoors
however I will have my two small children (ages 6 & 3) with me
I have not been able to find any information online
Some of the tables are precariously close to the edge so I'm not sure if they'd allow young children to sit there
Strange you didn't mention the other great restaurant {removed by editor}..
she quality food and less touristy because a tv show wasn't focused on it
Is there reservation services at this restaurant
My wife and I will be in LIsbon for her birthday and I would love to take her here
Hi Jose, we made reservations via email: [email protected] Hope that helps and enjoy Ponto Final

See what it’s like to eat at Ponto Final
Located in Almada across the river from Lisbon
Ponto Final is notable for its great food and epic views
star of the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil
enjoy lunch on a railless concrete boat landing where he appears to be mere inches from plunging into the Rio Tejo (Tagus River)
It’s a highlight of his Lisbon episode that caught our eyes too
If you’re wondering where he ate that lunch
the answer is Ponto Final – just a ferry ride across the river from Lisbon
The restaurant Ponto Final is no hidden gem and the international Netflix exposure has made it one of the most difficult Lisbon reservations to score
Fun FactWhile Ponto Final is in the Lisbon metropolitan area
it’s technically located in Almada on the very northern end of the Setubal peninsula
Getting to Ponto Final is as simple as taking an inexpensive 10 minute ferry ride from Cais Sodre to Cacilhas followed by a short walk (approximately 15 minutes) to Ponto Final in Almada’s Cais do Gingal neighborhood
The ferry fare is less than 2€ (price subject to change)
Since both the ferry ride and walk are scenic
We especially enjoy checking out the eclectic street art and impromptu craft shops every time we make the short journey to Ponto Final from our Lisbon apartment
We didn’t rush to eat at Ponto Final after we moved to Lisbon despite how easy it is to do
our rewards included legendary views of the Cristo Rei statue and the 25 de Abril bridge as well as views of Lisbon stretching from Alcantara to Alfama
we found Ponto Final’s food to be surprisingly good during that first visit
We’ve since returned multiple times and often recommend the riverside restaurant to visiting friends and readers
Sometimes we even join them if the timing works

is fantastic – a creamy tomato fish stew with a rusticity that matches the epic
unadulterated view of the the sprawling city skyline
this traditional Portuguese dish is a must-order every time we venture across the water for dinner with a view
Discover more traditional Portuguese dishes worth eating
Don’t be dissuaded by this fish stew’s seemingly high price which was 45.70€ at the time of our most recent meal and could increase yet again due to inflation
While the Ponto Final menu lists the dish for two people
the restaurant’s ‘poor man’s lobster’ served swimming in a thick seafood broth with rice is a dish that’s big enough to share (along with another dish or two) with a larger group
We especially like Ponto Final’s summer version of sardines as well as the restaurant’s wine braised veal cheek dish called Vitela à Ponto Final
melt-in-your-mouth dish is a great option if you’re not a seafood eater or if you’re dining with a group of friends and want to mix things up
Pro TipEnjoy wine but don’t overdo it. Otherwise, you could end up swimming with the next night’s catch. Kidding. Not kidding. However, feel free to order as many Portuguese desserts as you fancy
Options include Mousse de Chocolate (chocolate mousse)
Arroz Doce (rice pudding) and Fruta (fresh fruit)
which translates to end point or last stop
at midday with the sun blazing on your table like Phil did
we recommend reserving a table closer to sunset
when the cool breezes arrive from the Atlantic and the sun retreats
you’ll want to email the restaurant at least a month in advance of your visit but preferably longer
Doing so is worth the effort considering Ponto Final’s surprisingly affordable menu and million euro view
This is a one-of-a-kind Lisbon experience that you don’t want to miss
Pro TipWhile you can take your chances without a reservation, we don’t recommend that approach unless your okay with potential dining disappointment. Instead, consider eating next door at Atira-te ao Rio
Atira-te ao Rio accepts online reservations and its view is almost as epic as Ponto Final’s view
Ponto Final is located at Rua do Ginjal 72
reservations are an absolute must for food travelers who don’t want to risk dining disappointment
We recommend emailing the restaurant at pontofinalrest@gmail.com to request a table at least one month before the preferred date
Ponto Final’s a la carte menu is moderately priced
the bill totaled 115€ which included a bottle of white wine and enough food to satisfy four hungry diners
Ponto Final doesn’t have a dress code
you’ll want to bring a sweater or jacket unless Lisbon is in the midst of a heat wave
Not only is taking the Cacilhas ferry the most cost effective and fun transportation option
but it’s also part of the Ponto Final dining experience
you could alternatively take a taxi or car service from Lisbon if you have accessibility issues or are afraid of boats
We recommend making a reservation 30 minutes before sunset so that you can enjoy your meal while watching a (hopefully) gorgeous sunset from beginning to end
