Canelas and Shapiro share their love of teaching
Duke University awarded its inaugural Judith Decker Prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching this year to three faculty members — Catherine Admay
The prize winners were chosen from 120 faculty candidates identified last spring during an open nomination period where Duke faculty
alums and current students submitted more than 500 nominations
Duke’s Office of Undergraduate Education enlisted student writers to interview professors Admay
Canelas and Shapiro for a take on their teaching philosophies
Hi,” Catherine Admay said cheerfully as she rushed into a Sanford classroom to lead the “No Cash
a health and human rights court simulation organized to prepare students for careers in law
Admay created an immediate sense of welcome and connection
This moment is emblematic of how Admay teaches — from a place of mutual engagement and shared purpose
“I’m not a person who likes to be in the limelight
I like to teach and get us involved,” she said
Her students say they are co-creators in an experience rooted in trust
and what Admay calls “right relationship.” Her classroom is a space where ideas are tested
and stories shared — to practice deep listening and empathy
“This is why I love constitutional law — my heart,” she said
she draws connections between legal frameworks and lived experience
using role-plays to help students wrestle with justice in both theoretical and tangible terms
A white South African who came of age under Apartheid
Admay’s teaching is animated by personal history and professional resolve
“How do we together un-make structural violence and bring about flourishing for all?” she asked
the classroom is not removed from the world’s challenges; it is a rehearsal space for justice
Whether helping students find their “sparkle” in legal doctrine or cheering them on beyond graduation
humility and a sense of shared responsibility
Her students leave knowing that learning doesn’t end when class does — and that they’ve had a teacher who truly “held space for their greatness.”
“Chemistry is not the most important thing you’re learning,” said Dorian Canelas
“You’re learning something transferable about pattern recognition
Or you’re learning to tackle a really difficult task and not give up
but those are skills that will help you no matter what you do.”
Over the past 16 years Canelas has taught almost every undergraduate chemistry course
her pathway to her current career is quite the surprise
“I wanted to work in industry.” Canelas earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry and then worked in research for four years before pursuing her Ph.D
she returned to the private sector before receiving a call from a friend to apply to an open teaching position at North Carolina State University
Canelas believes her experience in the private sector may be part of the secret to her talent as a professor; she said that it helped build professional skills such as collaboration on teams
leadership and working with diverse groups of people
when asked if she prefers research or teaching
because I feel that I can make a bigger impact
I have the option to impact the world by watching so many people become successful.”
Canelas’ advice to her undergraduate students: “It’s important to struggle because that’s how you grow
And you’re going to make a lot of mistakes
and it’s really important to get good at accepting the responsibility for your actions
That’s something a lot of people haven’t learned before they get to college.”
She emphasized the importance of intellectual curiosity and responsibility
There’s a lot of people at Duke whose entire story has been a success story
But the people who have really become leaders in their field are the people who are willing to wipe out.”
Karin Shapiro’s path to teaching African & African American studies at Duke was not straightforward
as she navigated a range of interests and career paths on her way
What is consistent is an eagerness to understand the world around her
in particular moving between the histories of South Africa and the United States to find deep connections and distinctions in their fraught racial relations
and a commitment to share this research with students and non-scholarly audiences
As an undergraduate at the University of Witwatersrand
Shapiro grew up in the politically tense backdrop of Apartheid South Africa
Shapiro deferred her acceptance to study medicine in favor of a Fulbright Fellowship to pursue a history degree at Yale University with a focus on African-American studies
A Duke faculty member for the past 25 years
Shapiro has influenced the lives of many students
Her students have won numerous awards for their research papers
She seeks to empower students to take responsibility for their learning process
interacting with young minds in a way that lets them know of their true potential and ability to excel
“There’s much to enjoy about being a Duke faculty member – superb colleagues
opportunities to teach in interesting ways and to pursue wide-ranging intellectual interests,” Shapiro said
Shapiro embodies the spirit of scholarly mentorship; in the classroom she encourages students to employ knowledge and skills to explore difficult questions on race
creating a space where contentious topics are not shied away from but approached with evidence-based understandings
The Decker’s prize is recognition of the lasting influence she has had on her students and the colleagues with whom she has connected
Shapiro’s advice for aspiring academics is simple: “Have fun

The award was presented to Catherine Admay

The three recipients were selected from a pool of over 500 nominations and 120 nominees which was narrowed down to 12 finalists
Each recipient will receive a monetary prize of $35,000 in addition to the recognition
“I was gobsmacked to receive this prize,” Shapiro wrote in an email to The Chronicle

A reception was held Thursday evening to celebrate the honorees with remarks from Provost Alec Gallimore and Candis Watts Smith
vice provost for undergraduate education and professor of political science
“Classroom educators are the unsung heroes of the academy and often go uncelebrated,” Watts Smith said
“Shaping the minds of future generations and inspiring growth is some of the hardest work in education.”
Admay further emphasized how receiving the award was “really about the students who [she has] had the great privilege to see and hold space for.” She also called on the “hive” of hard-working faculty
librarians and research and teaching assistants at Duke who have made her success possible
Admay’s teaching and research interests lie in the fields of human rights

Canelas has taught several introductory-level chemistry courses
working to implement student-centered pedagogies and increase undergraduate retention in the sciences
Her research interests include chemical education research
the scholarship of teaching and learning and macromolecules for industrial and biological applications

Her courses explore issues related to “race
nationalism and unfulfilled political and economic commitments,” topics she wrote she does not want to “shy away from.”
Shapiro shared that she strives to create “ever-evolving courses” that are thought-provoking and satisfying for students and that provide students with the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and explore their individual interests
I truly believe they have something to say and I’m curious to discover what that might be,” she wrote
All current Duke faculty members who have taught an undergraduate course within the past four semesters are eligible to win the award
students and alumni were able to submit their nominations throughout April
Shapiro described reading students’ letters of nomination as “a deeply moving gift” that “reminded [her] of why [she] love[s] to teach.”
Nominated faculty were then reviewed based on a rubric evaluating “their learning environment design
community and student outcomes.” Finalists were contacted in late June and submitted teaching portfolios by mid-September

such as cinnamon crust and burnt vanilla-filled conchas and champurrado-flavored maple doughnuts
displayed in tall cases that will be familiar to those who have visited Mexico City’s plentiful panaderías
Santa Canela will also serve savory options like a potato soyrizo croissant and a cured beef and kale chimichurri focaccia sandwich topped with fried chile güeros
“Santa Canela is so close to home because I grew up in El Sereno,” says Ramos
whose parents come from El Salvador and Mexico
“Everyone came to Highland Park to hang out
It’s exciting to be on Figueroa and showcase what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years.”
To go with the pastries, Santa Canela will have contemporary twists on traditional Mexican bakery drinks, such as cafe de olla, champurrado, and horchata. The Santa Canela team invited Odette Olavarri, who owns Mexico City’s popular Odette bakery
to consult on the menu: A handful of Olivarri’s pastries
Santa Canela’s pastries run from $3.50 to $7
Those craving a more classic concha and cafe de olla can visit the neighboring 34-year-old bakery Delicias one morning
then Santa Canela for a kale-and-beef focaccia sandwich on a different day
Ramos hopes the bakery will be for everyone in the neighborhood
even those hitting the yoga studio on the other side of Figueroa
Follow Eater editors as they share their favorite dishes they ate in LA
The editors at Eater LA dine out several times a week
which means we’re always encountering standout dishes that deserve time in the limelight
Here’s the very best of everything the team has eaten this week
It’s pastry chef Ellen Ramos’s time. The young baker spent years working alongside notable chefs at 71 Above and Redbird, only to keep evolving her obsessions into an eventual primary role at Loreto and Cha Cha Cha LA, where she served modern and bold takes on everything sweet. Santa Canela opened on March 12
steps away from Homestate; it’s a gorgeous
compact space by architect Lena Kohl that evokes Mexico City vibes right in Highland Park
so prepare to wait for Ramos’s rotating menu of pastries
which will likely include her signature LA-shaped churro
My current favorite standout is her maple bar-inspired champurrado long Juan doughnut with a delightfully spongy texture and icing that’s not too sweet
She takes inspiration from the traditional champurrado
a thick Mexican hot chocolate typically made with masa
take a bite of the long Juan for a joyful moment
walk less than a block south for the longstanding and excellent Delicias bakery
A lot of food enthusiasts are aware of Ichimiann in Downtown Torrance
one of the best spots for casual soba in Los Angeles
which occupies a sleepy strip mall spot on Hawthorne Boulevard
The near windowless space feels like a busy Japanese train station restaurant or office worker go-to
with the place packing in with mostly Asian folks for lunch
The mentai tororo is admittedly going to be a Marmite dish
with the slimy grated mountain yam something that takes a little getting used to
which is provide a thick almost creamy binder for the noodles and broth
nutty buckwheat noodles here are as good as Ichimiann’s while the balanced dashi brings it all together
The salty cod roe gives that extra umami punch to a dish just bursting with deliciousness
My only wish is that they served a larger version so I could actually get completely full with this bowl (I ordered a pork tonkatsu bento as well and easily ate both dishes)
Although tomato season hasn’t really hit Los Angeles yet
BLTs are starting to sneak back onto menus as early crops ripen
I had my first BLT of the season at Barbara’s at the Brewery in Lincoln Heights
which sits on the Brewery Artist Lofts complex
While my usual order here is fish and chips
I was surprised by a weekend brunch menu that offered more breakfast-like options
A good BLT is so dependent on the tomato quality
While not as sweet as mid-summer heirlooms
they were juicy with the right balance of acidity and sweetness
The rest of the sandwich was simple but well-executed
The za’atar tossed fries on the side made it all the better
The kitchen at Chi Spacca is firing on all cylinders under chef Armen Ayvazyan
who has now helmed the Nancy Silverton-owned steakhouse for the past year and a half
Ayvazyan has prepared a much more California-style menu with only just a few nods to Italian cuisine in the focaccia de recco and bistecca/costata alla Fiorentina (the English-style meat pies are also still there)
like basturma-style veal tongue dressed with salsa verde or these terrific porcini-dusted short ribs with scallion ribbons
Inspired by Osteria Mozza’s chef de cuisine Elizabeth Hong’s mother
I had charcoal-grilled galbi that came in big white buckets that my family would cook up at church picnics or family gatherings
though with the ultra-sharp steak knives it’s easy to slice away bite-sized pieces instead of gnawing on them like cavemen

which complicates for us the Mexican territory a bit today”
but the brands have been a bit slow to invest
noting that it is important to educate brands about the benefits of AVOD.“OTT has not found its space yet: it is not TV
it is not digital and I think it makes it difficult for it to grow
This is what happened in the US a couple of years ago when the AVOD market grew
because that investment was not very well defined on the brand side
I believe that in the Mexican market today there is a great desire
We know that the audiences are there and that Mexicans consume a lot of streaming
but the brands have been a bit slow on the investment side,” commented Rafferty.MEXICO IS WAITING FOR THE ADVERTISING EXPLOSION IN AVODAccording to a Statista study
the revenue generated by OTT services in Mexico was close to US$1,115 million in 2021 and by 2026 it will be US$1,900 million
2022 saw the highest percentage of growth in the number of Internet users in the last eight years reaching 96.87 million (+9.3%)
which represents 80.8% of the population +6 years of age
according to data from the MX Internet Association and the firm Knowsy AI
The favorite activity of Internet users in Mexico is connecting to networks and digital platforms (84%).In addition
according to the Digital 2022 Global Overview Report
carried out by WeAreSocial and Hootsuite in Mexico
97.9% of Internet users consume streaming TV on a monthly basis.“It is a challenge to help brands make that leap
I think it’s also a bit of a learning curve because they have a digital side where they don’t know how to give value to streaming and they try to put digital video models on a more premium platform
The CPM values that try to include a more premium model are not there
and has been difficult in the Mexican market,” she commented.Canela.TV was the first platform in Latin America to include formats with interactive versions in its inventory
almost doubling audience interaction time: +38 seconds gained above 20 seconds
delivering engagement rates of 3.97 % vs .70%
beating their benchmark by 459% for AVOD platforms.Another example of the benefit of Canela’s platform for its advertisers is that it has “increased the awareness of mass consumption brands in Mexico and the US through channel sponsorships that display customized collections where the reach goes beyond the actions within of the Canela.TV
linking their brands with targeted and segmented audiences relevant to their products and delivering results such as 96.51% in VCR
96.68% in billboard ads and amplifications in social networks.”“Our sales teams are educating agencies
good information and research,” Rafferty said.Ana Laura García Téllez
senior manager of Cinnamon Marketing in Mexico
mentioned that there are already “very good brands that are working with Cinnamon in Mexico.” She indicated that they are in full ‘evangelization’ work with decision makers and there is a lot of interest in advertising with the platform.Téllez said that global advertising budgets are leaning towards connected TV (CTV)
streaming has grown to represent 15.2% of total TV usage as of December 2022 (data from Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings and Nielsen National TV Panel).”Rafferty assured that Canela.TV audiences continue to grow in Mexico
She indicated that from 2021 to 2022 there was a growth of +172%
As an example of the positive performance of the Mexican audience
“immediately positioned itself as the most watched program
and after a month and a half of its premiere were in third position.”Rafferty listed several of the original projects that are most relevant to the Mexican market such as Secretos de las indomables
which debuts in August of this year; the daily show ¡Ponle Canela!; the informative series Narco impacto
produced in Mexico and part of Canela News
whose second season is already in full preparation including the selection of the characters.“We are aiming a lot at the future of Mexico
We believe that soon we’ll be a switch of advertising moving more towards OTT
It is a critical moment for the Mexican market and we are ready to take advantage of it”

Put yourself out there: You might have the most incredible product or service
The best way to increase your chances of getting a lucky shot is by throwing many shots
As a part of our series about “Why We Need More Women Founders”
I had the pleasure of interviewing Filipa Canelas
Filipa Canelas is a productivity expert, course creator, and the author of “Around is Forward: The Productivity Cycle Behind Extraordinary Results”. With her online courses, Filipa has taught more than 40,000 leaders, students, and entrepreneurs to improve their performance while enjoying the process. You can find her work at www.filipacanelas.com.
our readers would like to get to know you a bit more
Can you tell us a bit about your “backstory”
What led you to this particular career path
my backstory begins earlier than I could ever imagine
was a Youtube Channel about makeup and fashion
We got about 1,000 subscribers and a couple of partnerships
This gave me a hint of how much I love to create content
[Second Attempt] Right after the end of the Youtube Channel
I crossed paths with online courses’ platforms
I had this brilliant idea of creating a course teaching “How to DIY your own makeup”
This was the start of my career as an online course creator
the author presents different ideas and case studies for microbusinesses
I became fascinated by the possibilities and immediately decided the following: “I’m creating my version of a micro business”
and my 14-year-old-self saw an opportunity
I created a Facebook page called “Vendas da Crise” (Crisis Sales’)
in which I re-sold eBay products for a margin… drop shipping
enough to finance my most common expense — books
[Fourth Attempt] The possibility of working for myself in my pyjamas spiked my interest back in 2015
I learned the art of SEO (search engine optimization) and started offering some freelance services on Fiverr at 15 years old
I published an e-book on Amazon helping students succeed with my best hacks for thriving in school… don’t ask me if it was any good
resulting in my book “Around is Forward” 5 years later
[Sixth and best Attempt] I finally gained enough momentum and was established as a blogger and course creator
all the previous failed attempts were stepping stones for everything I accomplished
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began leading your company
When I started creating online content regularly
I received several messages of people calling me “teacher”
It was hilarious to be called that way when I was still in school
Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting
Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that
there was a problem — I was still 13 years old
I thought nobody would ever take me seriously and consider buying my course
I literally faked the pitch of my voice to make it sound older and professional
I can’t describe how terrible it sounded… but I was able to sell two courses
Sometimes you must go through some cringe moments to get where you want to be
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way
Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are
My parents were the biggest supporters of my journey
I don’t even know how they coped with my weird requests
my father shared his bank account details to receive the scarce payments
And my mother lent me some money so I could buy bulk SSD cards and re-sell them… I did not pay her interest
It is never just about one single factor. The gender funding gap is a combination of factors that usually hold women from starting their businesses. From lack of confidence, to doing more unpaid work than men, to less representation in the founding world.
I’ve certainly have experienced a lack of confidence during multiple periods of the journey. Both in my ability to achieve ambitious goals and in my ability to establish myself as a real entrepreneur.
Can you help articulate a few things that can be done as individuals, as a society, or by the government, to help overcome those obstacles?
Like multiple factors can hold back women, there are also numerous ways to overcome each and one of the existing obstacles.
As individuals, we can do something: believing in ourselves, despite how things turn out. Not all days will feel good, but our inner strength will help us move forward. As a society, we must be more supportive of women founders — recognizing the existing challenges, addressing them and assisting women in filling the deserved roles.
This might be intuitive to you as a woman founder but I think it will be helpful to spell this out. Can you share a few reasons why more women should become founders?
It is a fantastic opportunity to create your own version of reality. You get to decide the why, the how and the what. You get to choose whom to work with. You get to give as much as you want. I can’t think of anything more exciting.
What are the “myths” that you would like to dispel about being a founder? Can you explain what you mean?
You must be tough and insensible: The role of a founder is usually associated with power, toughness and insensitivity. But I don’t believe it to be true. What you need is to notice, feel, care and help. As Glennon Doyle said: “The opposite of sensitive is insensitive, and that’s no badge of honor.”
You must be greedy: This is far from the truth. Money is just a resource, and there is so much more to that. You can support so many causes while being a founder. You should, actually.
Is everyone cut out to be a founder? In your opinion, which specific traits increase the likelihood that a person will be a successful founder and what type of person should perhaps seek a “regular job” as an employee? Can you explain what you mean?
You must be comfortable with uncertainty. There is never a well-established ladder to climb up as a founder. You might perform exceptionally well, do everything you have planned, and still get nowhere. If you’re not ok with it, perhaps you should seek out another path.
Ok super. Here is the main question of our interview. Based on your opinion and experience, what are the “Five Things You Need To Thrive and Succeed as a Woman Founder?”
1. Put yourself out there: You might have the most incredible product or service. But if nobody is aware of its existence, it is not of much help. You must be willing to share your product, story, and personality. Luck plays a role you can’t predict. The best way to increase your chances of getting a lucky shot is by throwing many shots.
2. Get up: Literally and metaphorically. Get up, literally, and get to work on your most ambitious projects. Get up, metaphorically, because you will likely face obstacles that will knock you off. Get up.
3. Respect yourself: I’ve had moments in which I felt down, physically and mentally. And you know what did not help? Continuing to push past my limits. If there is one thing you need as a founder and entrepreneur, it is respecting yourself, setting boundaries and taking time to recharge.
4. Have grit: Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance. And you have no idea of what you can achieve when these two join forces. In fact, Angela Duckworth found that grit predicted success, even when controlling for talent or IQ. This idea is stuck with me forever: passion + perseverance > talent.
5. Be prepared: You will make a ton of mistakes… be prepared. You will succeed beyond your imagination… be prepared. Be prepared for both scenarios as they’re likely to happen.
How have you used your success to make the world a better place?
I’ve always been a person of causes, something I’ve learned with my mother’s example. From food collection and distribution to monetary donations and the representation of Portugal as the Ambassador of WAVE (a European NGO whose goal is to eliminate violence against women and children). There is always a way to help, and I don’t back off.
You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good for the greatest number of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.
I aspire to fund a social enterprise supporting people in need through educative programs, e.g. teaching skills that increase the chances of breaking the poverty cycle. It is heart-breaking how millions still die due to poverty. I believe education could contribute to ending this harsh reality.
We are very blessed that some very prominent names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them.
I can’t hide my admiration for Melinda Gates. After reading her soulful book “The Moment of Lift” and getting to know the fantastic work of the Gates Foundation, my appreciation never stopped growing. Melinda got inspired to create a charity institution after visiting Africa in 1993. She founded Pivotal Ventures, supporting women in the male-dominant tech industry. She is a wholehearted human being.
Thank you for these fantastic insights. We greatly appreciate the time you spent on this.
