the foreigner was swept away by the sea when he was on a rock taking a photograph and was at risk of drowning due to the strong sea waves
The alert was given by the lifeguard at the Hotel Galo
who due to the sea conditions was unable to carry out the rescue
The rescue was carried out by members of SANAS-Madeira
The tourist had deep cuts on his arms and legs and was later transported to the Dr

The rescue operation was coordinated by the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center

Where was your comment about charging the resident who flipped their car on the VR1 this morning
they flip because of a lack of judgement on the part of someone
the Maritime Search and Rescue are on shift already
Maybe pay for a few liters of fuel for the boat
But also charge the resident for the fuel related costs associated with the VR1 response earlier too
and more now will being charged if they doing something they shouldn’t be

A fault in the Madeira Electricity Company’s electrical network is affecting the Madeira Water and Waste water collection system in the municipality of Santa Cruz
making distribution impossible in several areas of the parish of Caniço
The information was released by the Santa Cruz City Council in a Facebook post
“Due to a fault in the EEM electrical network at the Porto Novo site
which is affecting a water collection hole belonging to ARM
the supply of drinking water to the sites of Tendeira
which is expected during the morning of 19/03/2025”
The local authority’s warning was issued in the early hours of Wednesday and has not yet been updated
although it is true that this is the only case of a municipality
being affected by the bad weather in terms of water distribution

Police tactics under scrutiny after remains of Steve Canico are found in Loire river
The French prime minister has promised “total transparency” in investigating the death of a man following clashes between police and festival-goers in the western city of Nantes
Investigators confirmed the identity of a 24-year-old man whose body was found in a river more than a month after riot police raided a music festival
Steve Canico went missing on the night of 21-22 June after officers moved in to disperse techno music fans attending a free concert in the western city of Nantes as part of France’s national music celebration day
More than a dozen concertgoers fell into the nearby Loire River during the ensuing clashes
prompting accusations of excessive force by police trying to shut down the party
An autopsy carried out on Tuesday morning on the badly decomposed body that was found close to the concert site on Monday confirmed it was Canico

Photograph: Sebastien Salom-Gomis/AFP/Getty ImagesProsecutors said they had opened a manslaughter investigation
and the police have carried out their own internal inquiry
The prime minister said that the police investigation found no evidence of a link between the intervention of security forces and Canico’s disappearance
but acknowledged that numerous questions remained over how the event was handled
He said he had ordered the interior ministry’s own investigative body
to open an inquiry “to go deeper and understand how the event was organised”
Footage posted on social media showed scenes of chaos as officers carrying batons and firing teargas moved in on revellers by the river
Local authorities said 14 people were pulled from the water after the clashes
feared he had been swept away in the confusion
View image in fullscreenA man holds a placard reading ‘Where’s Steve?’ Photograph: Sebastien Salom-Gomis/AFP/Getty ImagesHis disappearance drew fierce criticism over the tactics used by police
already under fire for heavy-handed interventions during the weekly gilets jaunes (yellow vest) anti-government protests that erupted last November
Posters asking “Where’s Steve?” soon appeared around Nantes
and on 20 July hundreds of protesters formed a human chain along the Loire to observe a minute’s silence for the missing man
Local authorities have also been criticised for allowing the event to go ahead at a riverside venue without sufficient barriers
The Regional Directorate for the Environment and the Sea (DRAM) urgently notified the Santa Cruz Municipal Council (CMSC) to immediately repair a serious fault in the municipality’s basic sanitation system
following an open sewage discharge that occurred between Reis Magos and Atalaia
was caused by a “serious obstruction” in the underwater emissary that serves the Caniço Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)
The situation is being addressed by the operating company
which is carrying out work to unblock the pipeline that transports wastewater from Caniço and Camacha
According to information from the Regional Directorate for the Marine Environment
the management of the basic sanitation network
is the sole responsibility of the municipalities
The inspection chamber where the discharge occurred
has been showing recurrent blockages in recent times
which could reveal serious deficiencies in the maintenance of the terminal part of the network
DRAM stresses that this is not the first time that it has notified CMSC about the need for urgent interventions in the infrastructure
warning of significant environmental risks
particularly due to the proximity of the affected area to a protected area of high ecological value
The environmental authorities insist on the need for adequate investments by the municipality to ensure the proper functioning of the network and avoid the repetition of episodes of this severity

The Caniço Parish Council is determined to find a solution to revitalize access to Canavieira Beach and guarantees that it is analyzing all possibilities
in order to understand whether it is possible to restore security to the area
Milton Teixeira’s position, published on his social networks, comes after a complaint from a Facebook group called ‘Cana Vieira uma Praia da Madeira’ which, as reported this morning by JM, is outraged by what it considers to be the appropriation of Vereda da Praia da Canavieira by a private individual
which already has almost a thousand members
is calling for swift intervention by the competent authorities to halt and demolish the ongoing works on the site and is calling for the reopening of this
The Parish Council President begins by recalling that access to the site was closed in 2018
following an inspection of safety conditions carried out by the Caniço Parish Council and the Municipal Civil Protection
the lack of safety at the access point was clear
putting everyone who passed by on their way to the beach at risk
Safety structures (including balconies) have been abandoned for several years and no longer have the ability to support their bases
falling rocks and several large cracks that
with all the safety risks that this could entail
Milton Teixeira also recalls the various episodes that occurred at the site
particularly with regard to illegal activities that even led to the intervention of criminal police bodies
the Parish Council sent a team to clean this access for 15 days
having requested a new assessment from the Municipal Civil Protection
“The inspection was carried out jointly and
“Was it hard to take part in this decision
It was one of my childhood beaches and it left me with so many memories
I would rather be penalised for an unpopular decision than live with the knowledge that someone could get seriously hurt there
the Board is checking all the possibilities
including with the specialized intervention of the Regional Government’s cliff face workers
to verify if they can get the minimum services essential to restore safety
Taking into account that this is part of the Maritime Public Domain
guarantees that it is “making every possible effort
to try to find a solution to revitalize access to this beach
without jeopardising the budgetary stability” of the Board

some 1,700 protesters gathered to march against police brutality
They were met with clouds of tear gas
It’s a common sight these days at protests across France
where law enforcement relies heavily on tear gas
grenades and rubber bullets fired by controversial launchers known as lanceurs de balles de défense
The anti-establishment Yellow Jackets movement, which has led mass demonstrations against Emmanuel Macron’s reform efforts across the country since November, has been the most vocal critic of the authorities’ heavy-handed approach. Several dozen people have lost an eye or a hand as a result of police interventions

Has anyone seen a traffic warden on the island and just how many fines for non payment or staying over the limit have been issued
Are we about to see another growth industry on the island
Traffic warden gave me a €30 fine in the Garajau 19th December .An oversight on my part
I would normally pay 20 cents for a few mins for a coffee
didn’t do it and paid the price. They (traffic wardens) are prolific in the Garajau/ Cancela area where there are blue lines
hence strangulation of traffic in front of Pingo Doce Cancela and in the Garajau
So I should have just parked on a yellow or cris cross yellow reserved for for buses
Oh the wardens are everywhere and where the fine use to be 2euros
I’ve seen plenty of parking penalty notices issued in Ribeira Brava (no
On one particular day over half the cars parked just by the health centre had been slapped with a fine
and it only costs 25 cents per hour to park there
Also near Calheta marina drivers often seem to be unaware that you have to pay to park seven days a week
I have seen the local warden putting penalty notices on lots of cars…
Most houses have a driveway for one or more cars
Michael Litten…you should see them on the seafront at Ponta do Sol and Calheta right along the seafront especially around Pingo Doce
waiting to pounce quite literally sometimes
Obviously in other towns certainly not very many here in Funchal away from the seafront
Sao Pedro where I live is a nightmare and even if someone has parked in front of my garage it usually takes the police 30 minutes to arrive and issue a ticket
Have yet to see one of the multiple abandoned vehicles in roads and carparks around the Pico Fort that have been there for months
Well they things are going around the council will be asking the property residents to pay a fee to park their cars outside .Like they do around where in Sintra you pay 5 euros for car parking badged ticket to park outside of your house that is valid for 2 years and you only apply to one car the other needs to stay park in the drive
The case of the accident with a tourist bus that caused 29 deaths and 27 injuries
a tourist bus crashed on Estrada da Ponta da Oliveira
after the driver lost control of the vehicle
were 55 passengers who were traveling for a typical dinner at a restaurant in Funchal
The fatal victims – 17 women and 12 men – were all of German nationality and were between 40 and 50 years old
two were of Portuguese nationality (the driver and the interpreter guide who accompanied the group)
of the bus driver “for the practice of 29 crimes of negligent homicide”

she requested the “opening of the instruction

The regional protection service in Madeira confirmed 28 deaths in the accident that happened at 6.30pm (1730 GMT)
while hospital authorities said another woman later died of her injuries

the traffic is at a crawl all the way along the expressway
If there is an accident then that’s a different story
then it’s at a stop start and very difficult
but then add the thousands of tourists on the roads now as we have a totally new younger generation
and it’s just clogging everything up
for the first time I saw something that made me realise that many more people are living to the east of Funchal
As I was going out last night I drove up through Garajau to get on the expressway
and the amount of traffic coming down I had never seen before and as I entered the expressway
the other side the traffic was queuing for about 300 meters to exit at Garajau, causing a lot of congestion
namely on the Via Rapida and on the main accesses to the center of Funchal
A scenario that is the same as so many days and that this Friday is no exception
of not seeing any major difficulties beyond the normal congestion due to intense traffic
funchalMadeiraTraffic
car free centre – pedestrian only are all possibilities
They can’t impose a congestion charge on a tourist island
It’s the same wherever you live so as Michael said – learn to live with it
Funchal isn’t London you can’t walk everywhere
it’s already expensive to own a car for locals and you want to put up taxes
I’d be better to build new parking spaces than more public transport
I left mine on a taxi bay walking to Catarina Park
perhaps when the government decided to allow so many apartments to be built in Canico due to the fact that the apartments in Funchal are so overpriced that local people cannot afford they maybe should have thought a bit more about it was going to affect the traffic
I really don’t think that tourists hiring cars are likely to be on the road at 7.30 in the morning
perhaps the answer is to build another motorway and destroy some more peoples houses like they did with my wife’s family
or maybe the answer is just simply learn to live with it
most tourists are on the roads very early adding to all the congestion
the new younger generation are up and out get to do as much as they can in their stay
When they built the Via Rapida (pun intended)
They should have done something many cities do and build a train /Tram line between the two carriageways
Rapid transit system would then have been provided for at little extra cost

Hidden behind a villa park with small and simple villas
Caniço beach restaurant Alvor is literally sandwiched between two rocks
If no one recommended this (ex Michelin star) restaurant to you
You park your car in the road in front of the barrier and walk through the park to the small beach and restaurant
which feels a bit strange because you usually take the lift to go up
You come out at a historic underground tunnel
where you can order drinks and simple snacks
I’m told… The resort looks a bit old and unsociable
At level -1 you'll find the toilet and the beach, at + 1 restaurant Caniço
Caniço serves meat and four vegan dishes such as Tahine
Prices of the main courses range from 13.50 - 26 euros
And too often take the stairs because the bar is downstairs and the kitchen upstairs
but this one is at least as good as the original Spanish paella
As a side we have a beautiful colourful salad (4.20) and boiled Portuguese potatoes (3.50)
For dessert we have the drunken pear (4.50) with cinnamon and a delicious Port
A unique small restaurant/beach club with good service
great views and delicious food for a fair price
Many beach clubs can take an example from that

Another night of rain here in Caniço and cold temperatures
Snow has fallen as low as Camacha making icy roads during the night and early morning
Many in Funchal have woken to the snow over the mountain tops
not often do we see show on the south side of the slopes
I have been speaking to Jackson Groves and he is going to try and get to Pico Ruivo from Santana and get his drone up for some shots
He hiked up to Pico do Areeiro yesterday and said the snow was a meter deep
