an aristocrat holiday hotspot in the late 1800s and a safe haven for exiled European royalty in the Second World War — Cascais has lived many lives since its inception as a settlement for salting fish during Roman times
reminders of this multifaceted history can be found both in the town itself and the wider area
The unhurried pace of life here is a distinct contrast to the constant hum of Lisbon
Museums focusing on the region and its connection to the sea have found homes in the ornate 18th- and 19th-century mansions emblematic of the region
while the bounty of the Atlantic is celebrated at Cascais’s restaurants
Parks and gardens are woven through the town and beyond it there are lush mountains
Benefitting from refreshing Atlantic breezes in summer

Sintra National PalaceThe country’s oldest royal palace and also the only one to still feature structural elements from the 1200s
the Sintra National Palace is a journey through over a thousand years of Portuguese history and architecture
First references of the palace appear in the writings of 10th-century Moorish geographer Al-Bakrî and since then nearly every Portuguese king and queen has spent some time at the palace
The building has been shaped by different architectural influences
especially Mudejar style — a combination of Christian and Muslim art — but its most striking feature is the two tall

which was built to prepare and cook game meat after royal hunts
The Italianate Casa de Santa stands adjacent to a blue-and-white striped lighthouse at Cascais' most photographed site.
But circumstance, which defines the framework, is not truly enough; an act of courage is needed to exist, and to exist is to have a structure, to find an order of one's own in the search for permanence. In architecture, perhaps it is indeed necessary to verge on abstraction in order to be capable of making the concrete.
The stone rests upon itselfIn the time of indigence, you will ask for no other abundanceNo other verse or houseNo other firmness [1]
© João Guimarães, João PeleteiroIn this project, faced with a static outline determined by urban planning and with the typological diversity established by the program, it was the metric of a structure that became form, the force of geometry, and the desire to open the space of 15 houses to the sun and the sea that set the direction of the course.
© João Guimarães, João PeleteiroThe houses, which cannot be bound by the program, found meaning in the depth of the shape of the volume, where a distribution gallery could once again become a distinct space, and in the possibility for living spaces to extend into an open connection with the site. Thus, a combination of houses with one, two, three, and four bedrooms took shape, preserving variations within the form of the building as a whole.

forward-looking declaration on Tuesday at a global forum to advance peace as war rages on
from Gaza and Lebanon to Sudan and Ukraine
Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and combatting hate speech and mis- and disinformation are part of the plan to bolster peace and mutual understanding as Heads of State and Government
presidents and prime ministers from Cabo Verde

“Our actions must go beyond conference rooms
places where people gather and the marketplace.”
In this regard, he said, social media is potential as a catalyst in this regard, he said, pointing to the Alliance’s Youth Solidarity Fund, which was featured on day one of the 10th Global Forum
At a time when dehumanisation is a growing problem
he emphasised that efforts must aim at eliminating stereotypes and ensuring that the wealth of human diversity is beneficial for everyone
UN Secretary-General Guterres said that the absence of peace is leading to an erosion of trust
making the Alliance of Civilizations’s work more important than ever before
“Rebuilding trust is our essential task,” he said
“Hate-filled frenzies are perpetuating stereotypes and misconceptions,” the UN chief said
Unchecked digital platforms and AI have endowed hate speech with a speed and reach unseen before

Cascais and Sintra are jewels sparkling just west of Lisbon
with beaches and forests just waiting to be explored
Of the coastlines in Europe awarded "Riviera" status
Portugal's may not be the first that comes to mind
although its location on Lisbon's doorstep
along with its revitalising climate and natural beauty
always made it a prime candidate for the distinction
The international gateway to the riviera is the Lisbon Humberto Delgado airport
Cascais is a short train journey west from Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon
while Sintra is connected from Rossio station
sometimes windier microclimate at its highest points
From our morning news briefing to a weekly Good News Newsletter

Crowning one of the riviera's highest peaks in the historic town of Sintra is the extraordinary Pena Palace
it wouldn't look out of place in a big-budget medieval fantasy
especially when surrounded by moody early morning clouds
It can be uncomfortably busy in peak season but like many buildings of regal imagination
it's a far more peaceful alternative to Pena and on a fine day arguably even more photogenic inside and out
On the road from Sintra to Cascais, which is blessed with several spectacular trails for hiking and cycling
the soaring view from the cliffs of Cabo Da Rocha is officially the westernmost point in continental Europe
Gazing out into the Atlantic – uninterrupted all the way to Central America – in the face of the rousing ocean winds is invigorating to say the least
In the former royal enclaves of Cascais and Estoril, old money has mostly made way for the holiday homes of a new wave of Portuguese royalty, like superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo
But that's not to imply that its soul and personality have been eclipsed only by gauche extravagance. Just behind the main promenade are snug grids of fishermen's cottages, like you might find in a weathered and sleepy Algarve town
pedestrianised streets lined with appealing restaurants and bars
Locals delight in telling the full story to visitors
Cascais is also home to the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego
where a significant collection of works from the important Portuguese-British artist is on display
Her provocative subjects and restless artistic style are excellently represented here
Penha Longa is a grand hotel resort immersed in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park
and it has belonged to the Ritz-Carlton group since 2012
making the level of service and quality unfalteringly world-class at every turn
which unwinds over 220 hectares of cascading hills below the mountains
the course enriches the hotel's verdant panorama and replenishing remoteness
the hotel is fine-tuned to the outside: supremely comfortable suites
allowing the naturally vibrant colours of the landscape and sky to filter through their generous terrace windows
What Penha Longa lacks in a boutique's intimacy it more than makes up for with its facilities
You can get married in a beautiful 15th-century Manueline monastery and hold the reception on one of its many landscaped lawns
all of which have arresting views into the valleys
Families are extremely well looked after in peak season
hi-tech gym and adults-only parts of the pool area make it an equally indulgent and restorative escape for couples
Penha Longa is also home to two of the finest restaurants anywhere in Portugal
Both are Michelin-starred but offer very different experiences
Midori is a stylish meditation on Portugal's relationship with Japanese cuisine
Floor-to-ceiling windows in the mostly monochrome dining room allow the dramatic views to frame the experience
seafood-centric tasting menus stand out not just for their meticulous design but how Santo orchestrates flavour
pensive interludes before a nimono of pear
cod and umeshu and shisho – paired with a top-shelf Sake – detonate over layers of hair-raising intensity
Veiga personally orientates guests to Portugal's finest ingredients in a separate room
placing imaginative hors d'oeuvres on a tabletop map of the country
Those ingredients are reprised in spectacular style in the intimate dining room in dishes such as carabiner prawn with Tomé vanilla foam
dish presentation and sommelier Diego Apolinário's centrepiece wine cellar make it a visually absorbing spectacle
everything is simple and honest: wonderfully bright and spacious inside
the produce and ocean view take centre stage
and any fish big enough to feed two can be salt-baked in the proud Portuguese tradition
In any Cascais or Sintra restaurant, look out for wine made in nearby Colares, rarely found outside of Portugal. A rugged terroir of sand and salty ocean air produces grapes that are uniquely evocative of the coastal elements. Casal Santa Maria offers tasting experiences to put that to the test
mineral-rich sauvignon blanc being a sensible place to start
It's wildly popular but don't let that put you off: some things are worth the hype and

The demolition of the CascaisVilla shopping building in Cascais will begin this Tuesday (April 8, 2025) to make way for a residential and commercial area designed by London architect Norman Foster
In a statement, the Cascais City Council (CMC) said that demolition work on the shopping centre will begin on Tuesday afternoon
a project for residential and commercial areas designed by London architect Norman Foster will be built on the site where the building is currently located
using recycled materials from CascaisVilla
According to what was presented at an extraordinary meeting of the Chamber
the proposal for the site “will not be a single
but divided into two structures separated by a large pedestrian area”
aligned “with the existing tunnel on Avenida D
“The area where this Norman Foster project will be built was recently the site of the new Cascais Bus Terminal
which has allowed for greater fluidity in traffic at the eastern entrance to the town,” Cascais City Council (CMC) also indicated
CascaisVilla opened in 2001 and is located at the eastern entrance to Cascais
“It should be noted that this was a demolition that had long been desired by a large part of the population of Cascais,” highlighted the city government

You are tearing something down and where does that material go
And why tear down and not just implement it into some design
I am not opposed to the future and improving
I just think it is a waste to see perfect things torn down in place of a face-lift or improving and implementing into the design

PORTUGAL: Infrastructure manager Infraestruturas de Portugal has awarded Hitachi Rail and its partners SISINT and Conecticabo contracts to modernise telecoms and passenger information systems on Lisboa’s Cascais Line
The stand-alone suburban line runs 25 km west from Lisboa Cais do Sodré station to the coastal town of Cascais
The contracts announced on February 25 build on a previous agreement for Hitachi to deploy ETCS Level 2 on the route
The passenger information systems will provide real-time updates at all stations
The contracts form part of a wider modernisation of the line
In 2022 a consortium of Comsa and Fergrupo was awarded a contract to convert the line’s electrification systems from 1·5 kV DC to the 25 kV 50 Hz used on the rest of the national network
In 2023 national operator CP selected a consortium of Alstom and local partner Domingos da Silva Teixeira for a contract to supply 117 electric multiple-units
including a dedicated allocation of 34 for the Cascais Line
PORTUGAL: A project to build the first new tramway in central Lisboa for more than 60 years has been formally launched at a ceremony held in the Parque das Nações
PORTUGAL: CP has named Alstom and local partner Domingos da Silva Teixeira as preferred bidder for a contract to supply 117 electric multiple-units
PORTUGAL: A €31·6m contract for the modernisation of the Lisboa Cais do Sodré – Cascais suburban line and the conversion of its electrification from 1·5 kV DC to 25 kV 50 Hz has been awarded to the Spanish-Portuguese Comsa/Fergrupo consortium
The re-electrification will make the line ..

The project is expected to be completed in 2028
On the same day that the CascaisVilla shopping centre began to be demolished
the first two images of the project that will replace it were revealed
a residential and commercial building designed by the renowned British architect Norman Foster
in collaboration with the Portuguese studio Fragmentos
One of the aims of this architectural project is to create a greener and more harmonious entrance to Cascais
with fewer cars and a building integrated into the surrounding environment
"ATÓLL is designed for those who value a connection to nature
and purposeful design — a project that combines sustainability
and well-being," said Filippo Buffa and Federico Rosales
the heads of the real estate company PRIME
The apartments will have terraces that will benefit from sunlight
and there will be "state-of-the-art technology." "Norman Foster's architectural vision and the dedication of the entire team will transform our region into a truly unique destination," says the Mayor of Cascais
"Located in the historic centre of Cascais
this project will enhance the beauty and prestige of the city
while also reinforcing our long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability."
The two images released refer to the street
where trees and the traditional Portuguese pavement can be seen
as well as the ground-floor spaces of the building
which are expected to be designated for commercial purposes
The project is expected to be fully completed by 2028
But its main role is to bring the party and seek out beauty”The Brazilian musician Seu Jorge has just released his new album
which he’ll be bringing to Portugal this summer with a show at Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais
We talked about the record and his special connection to the Portuguese town
A major figure in contemporary Brazilian popular music
Seu Jorge released his first album of original songs in a decade
he’ll present it in Portugal with a concert at Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais
Baile à la Baiana is deeply inspired by the music of Bahia — the oldest state in Brazil
home to one of the country’s largest Black populations and a place where African ancestry is profoundly present in its culture and history
Seu Jorge collaborated with local musicians like Magary Lord and Peu Meurray to explore a vibrant
danceable Brazilian “afro pop” sound — fast-paced
The word baile in the title also nods to Rio de Janeiro
the 54-year-old musician talks about the new album and looks ahead to his upcoming show in Cascais
a place that holds deep personal meaning for him
linked to one of the most important people in his life: his mother
It was where my mother took her first international trip — her first time leaving Brazil
I had rented a house and was planning to spend some time in Portugal
so I’d be away for a few days and then come back home
as a person who had lived a fast-paced life
I remember her pride — the achievement of travelling abroad — and my own achievement of making that happen for her
And it was exactly as I had imagined: we were together
not just catching up in between my commitments
Cascais will stay with me for the rest of my life because of this person who is so vital to my existence and is now nearing the end of her own life
and that feeling of pure joy and connection
And I’m actually thinking of bringing my mother along to see the concert
It will be a presentation of the new album
it will already feel familiar to the Portuguese audience
We always want to reach as many people as possible
I hope the songs will already be part of the audience’s lives
I’ll also revisit the hits that helped establish my career
It’s amazing to have this connection over the years — you realise how much your repertoire grows
we’re about to build a new relationship through Baile à la Baiana
Bringing a brand-new album is a unique opportunity — it shows you’re still thriving
Bahia is very close to me — through heritage
My entire ancestry is rooted in African identity
I can’t see myself as Brazilian without first seeing myself as African
And so much of that lost identity still lives in Bahia
It’s a city where 87% of the population is Black
Its music is both brilliant and spontaneous — the rhythms
where Black culture thrives through soul and funk
I carry that musical legacy — Tim Maia
Lady Zu… And then I had this friendship with Peu Meurray and Magary Lord
who represent the contemporary version of all that
and it made sense to create Baile à la Baiana
The word baile is a typical expression in Rio
and I paired it with Baiana to reflect a dance rooted in the flavours of Salvador
We’re exploring a Brazilian afro pop
strengthening the idea that there’s a vibrant
Dance music today is often more electronic
Peu Meurray’s pneus (his signature rubber drum sound)
It’s an album that starts at 120 BPM and up — it’s all about joy and celebration
That ritual of celebrating the sun is ancient
everyone wants to gather — at the beach
you’ve got four days to pillage whatever you like
We can’t forget that art can be a powerful tool for protest
There’s this repressed idea that art should exist for beauty and well-being — but that’s exactly what it’s about
That was exactly it — to create this synergy
“Rio is better,” “Bahia is better”… We tear all that down
And music lets you discover yourself through rhythm
in the way bodies react — someone smiles
without even realising it was music that created that moment of connection
it felt right to create an album full of joy
We’ve been through one of the hardest moments in modern history — the pandemic
They were overjoyed to experience live music again
I even played drive-in shows — people stayed in their cars
It felt like one of those dystopian streaming series — everyone distant
And now we can experience life fully again—hugging
I didn’t want to be left out of that
[laughs] A lot of us musicians end up jumping into the crowd
It’s all about the encounter — that’s what music is really about

Eight secrets of CascaisThe town has plenty to offer beyond the obvious
More and more tourists and travellers are seeking to escape the obvious

Cascais has so much more to offer than just the Bay

Marie Photographiet’s not located in the centre of Cascais
a residential area (yet still full of life)
nestled between Carcavelos and São Pedro do Estoril
We’re talking about Sociedade Musical União Paredense (SMUP)
a 125-year-old venue that has recently become the cultural – and especially musical – hotspot of the whole region
SMUP has become a beacon for the independent and alternative music scene in Portugal
frequently hosting renowned international artists
Keep an eye on the programme to see what’s on during your stay in Cascais
Another big draw to SMUP: the Sociedade restaurant
serving Portuguese cuisine with a contemporary twist
It’s undoubtedly one of Cascais’ best-kept secrets
Rita GazzoThe Cascais Line is known for its fantastic beaches
the sands often become too small for the overwhelming demand
there is one – and only one – that even most locals don’t visit
It’s called Praia do Abaninho (not to be confused with its neighbour
and it’s located in the Guincho area
When you reach the dirt road that leads there
instead of turning left to access the bar and parking lot
It’s between these two that you’ll find the long staircase that leads you down
Praia do Abaninho almost disappears when the tide comes in
but it’s much more sheltered from the wind compared to Praia do Abano or Praia do Guincho
Moinho Dom Quixote is more than just a restaurant – it’s an experience
This traditional windmill is the perfect retreat for a meal away from the hustle and bustle of the city
offering stunning views over the Atlantic and Praia do Guincho
Getting there is an adventure – a winding path through the mountains
surrounded by breathtaking landscapes at every turn
Crossing the discreet red gates feels like stepping into another world
“This is a place where the presence and grandeur of nature perfectly combine with tables full of friends sharing the flavours of our creative cuisine,” says Anna Claudia Braeutigam
you’ll find options like burrata focaccia
or pork loin croquettes with spices – perfect for sharing or keeping it all to yourself
Brunch lovers are in for a treat too: there’s a menu served daily from 12.00 to 14.00
with hearty combinations or individual options like croissants and scones
there's plenty to choose from – aperitifs
and wines – all perfectly matched to the surrounding landscape
the road connecting the Guia area to Cascais Marina
has been home to a yellow hot dog van that has become a familiar symbol for locals and regulars alike
It all started after a trip to Venezuela when António Novais and a former partner came up with the idea to start the business
and the only hot dogs in Portugal were simple – just bread and sausage
and a variety of sauces that turned it into a regional landmark
who later introduced their parents to the hot dogs
The avenue wasn’t as developed back then – the sidewalk was dirt
with shrubbery and little construction all the way to Guincho
the hot dog van was only there during the summer season
which led to the opening of a shop at the Riyadh shopping centre
along with stints at the Marina and in Manique
it remains exclusively at the original spot
lies in the quality of the product and the recipes that have remained almost unchanged
including the "white" and "pink" sauces made with secret ingredients
as well as vegetarian options – all to be enjoyed with a unique view of the ocean
DROpened in 1869, the Teatro Gil Vicente is the oldest theatre in Cascais. Although it is currently closed to the public for regular programming due to necessary renovations, its building and history can – and should! – still be admired.
It opened at a time when the fishing town was preparing to gain national prominence, as the Portuguese royal family began spending their holidays in the region. This factor was crucial for both Cascais and the Teatro Gil Vicente: it attracted audiences and businesses, helping to develop the area. King D. Luís I and various members of the royal family would often attend performances there, which were staged by some of the most renowned national and international actors of the time.

With its traditional atmosphere and unique characteristics
it's not often visited by tourists discovering Cascais but is a beloved spot for locals – many of whom enjoy dining under the shade of the trees
whether in summer or on a fine winter’s day
the future of Cabana das Paixões is linked to the development project for Quinta dos Ingleses
the plan is for the restaurant to have a new life within the future premises of the Grupo Sportivo de Carcavelos

In charge of the kitchen is chef Henrique Rosa
who worked at El Bulli and Noma before opening this much more relaxed space
hot dogs were served from this corner of Avenida Valbom
a vibrant Iberian tapas house that has completely revamped the venue and is already making waves – even during the typically quieter month of January
It's a project by three friends from Cascais with strong ties to Spain
who lived in Barcelona for several years and even worked as a trainee at Ferran Adrià's former El Bulli
one of the most famous restaurants in the world
The Portuguese chef also trained at the Basque Culinary Center in Spain and worked at the renowned Noma and Kadeau in Denmark
he’s held positions at Sheraton Lisboa and as a chef for Sonae
“When I was working in Michelin-starred restaurants and fine dining
all I wanted was to go somewhere relaxed where I could just have a few drinks”
He’s behind the project he’s always dreamed of
alongside his friends João – who’d also lived in Madrid and was the former owner of Paradigma in Cascais – and Cláudio
who used to run the steakhouse La Lombonera in Estoril and has deep connections to Spanish culture thanks to his Ribatejo roots
the idea is simple: to make things easy-going
and Spanish tunes ranging from Alejandro Sanz to Manu Chao
It’s the perfect spot for socialising — even for customers meeting for the first time
“We knew exactly what we wanted: a place to unwind
to have a caña at the end of the day
and the owners wanted to create a "democratic" space
with something “for everyone and anyone.” The menu
You can start with Iberian ham croquettes (€3/three pieces)
which combines anchovies and sherry vinegar (€8)
Other great choices include the Barceloneta bomba (€6)
the tavern-style chorizo with spicy honey (€11)
or the Bodega’s huevos rotos (€15)
it’s worth trying the mussels with tomato and vermouth (€16)
the salted cod cheek with chickpeas (€15)
or the sirloin served with a brandy and Roquefort sauce (€14.50)
there are the hand-sliced Maldonado cured meats
which you can enjoy on a mixed platter for €45
Also on the menu are an Iberian ham and cheese bocadillo (€16)
and the Ti’Henrique bifana (€14)
there’s a burnt tart served with a torrão (€6) or a dessert combining the typical Girona sweet
with what chef Henrique Rosa considers to be the ultimate dessert in Cascais: Santini hazelnut ice cream (€5.50)
And because no bodega is complete without a good drink
you can choose from a selection of Portuguese wines
though they also serve spirits and plan to have draft cocktails available very soon
The space underwent major renovations for six months to transform into Bodega Brava
which can accommodate around 30 people standing
there’s a counter with a direct view of the kitchen
which is completely open and “totally transparent,” with a handful of seats; plus another eight seats in the main room
they’ll also have a small mezzanine with space for an extra dozen guests
The décor focuses on elements that pay homage to Iberian traditions
with a mix of vintage items and modern touches scattered throughout
