The Town of Castro Marim is Tucked so far east into Portugal that you might hear echoes of Spanish from across the Guadiana River
Though not a famed salt mecca on the order of Guerande
people here have been transforming seawater into seasoning for millennia
Jorge Raiado married into this tradition 12 years ago
effectively becoming part of the second generation to operate a company called Salmarim
But any ambition Raiado had to improve the product encountered a powerful foe
The salt-making process in Castro Marim is a natural one
“Nature is always wild and does whatever she wants.”
It seems simple enough: The tide runs in from the Atlantic Ocean through man-made canals
filling Salmarim’s grid of shallow mud ponds with water
Jorge Raiado's flor de sal is available at avidaportuguesa.com.When Raiado started working at Salmarim, “they were harvesting everything that floated, and so I did the same,” he says. The problem is that the top crust is made of prized flor de sal—and less-desirable salt crystals. So Raiado turned to a geologist at the University of Algarve for advice
he aims to fill the ponds earlier in the season and obsessively monitors weather data to encourage the ideal rate of evaporation
Now Salmarim produces less salt but of a much higher quality
Alexandre Silva, chef at the Michelin-starred Lisbon restaurant Loco
was so inspired by a visit to Raiado’s salt ponds that he created a dish of steamed eggs and seaweed custard in their honor
“You are surrounded by these marshland plants
and the scent of salt in the air takes you out of your comfort zone,” Silva says
George Mendes, the Portuguese-American chef at New York’s Aldea, insists that Salmarim possesses a delicate flavor not found in other salts. “Maybe I’m biased, but to me, Salmarim captures the essence of Portugal: simple, clean, and pure.”

sourced from the small Portuguese fishing village where Birkin first found her own
who launched the boutique basket line less than two years ago
I’m obsessed with Jane Birkin and her style,” she says on the phone from Porto
where she has been based for the past three years
the simple dresses with Repetto flats—it’s the ultimate chic
not overly made-up.” Yet it was her own story that led her to the Birkin basket
she grew up on the tiny volcanic island of Madeira
grow up knowing the fishing villages that dot the Algarve
They also know of the wicker baskets used there to haul the day’s catch in from the ocean—silvery sardines and octopuses
the exact same basket that Jane Birkin used to wear,” Heavey says
“But when I went down and got one for myself
it was better than I expected—handcrafted to perfection
Photo: Courtesy of Bonjour Coco / @janebirkinbasketAbout once a month
Heavey hops in a car and drives six hours down the winding coast to Castro Marim in the heart of the Algarve
who still practice the traditional basket-weaving technique—but Heavey only works with one
and has been weaving baskets by hand since age 10
“and he is magic.” Each basket takes him three days to make
Willow cuttings are gathered in the winter (they are too dry in summer) and left to soak in water for a few days to soften
Then the fibers are painstakingly bent and twisted into their final form
“There are a lot of brands right now selling them
but with the minor warping and colored spots expected of something entirely handmade—one sees the hand that made it
a modern-day Jane Birkin if ever there was one—she spent an idyllic summer swinging a basket in peasant tops and wide-leg denim
wading through a river in Lesconil with one perched on her head
The Bonjour Coco basket also featured in a recent campaign for Rouje
Damas’s own classic-contemporary French brand
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from
Because Heavey only trusts one man to make them
“That’s why I’m always sold out,” she says
she will launch a small range of Jane Birkin–inspired items
and maybe a bit of cashmere as well,” she says
they’ll remain treasures—worth prizing and taking everywhere
"The A22 [motorway] between the junctions of Castro Marim and Altura is still cut off
with the National Road 125 being an alternative
a source from the Territorial Command of Faro told Lusa
The alert for the rural fire was given at 01:05 on Monday and the fire was considered to be dominated by 10:20
was the origin of a " very strong reactivation
in the middle of the critical period of the day
close to the head/right flank of the original fire
and this was quickly out of extinguishing capacity”
explained the regional operational commander of Faro
the fire had already entered the municipalities of Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António
the authorities are making "all efforts to reopen the motorway"
although it is not foreseeable that this can happen in the next few hours
“Traffic is very restricted in the area
now it moves very slowly between Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira”
there were 628 operatives fighting the fire that broke out in Castro Marim
supported by 208 land and 11 air resources
the authorities will take a new look at the situation

The event is organised by the Comissão de Cogestão da Reserva Natural do Sapal do Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António (RNSCMVRSA)
of which the Cominidade Intermunicipal do Algarve (AMAL) is a member
For more information on the program please visit: https://amal.pt/comunicacao/933-14-de-abril-dia-aberto-da-reserva-natural-do-sapal-de-castro-marim-e-vila-real-de-santo-antonio
The Natural Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António (RNSCMVRSA) is located in the southeast of the Algarve
streams which extend across the municipalities of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António
housing a high number of fauna and flora species
This wetland of international importance was the first natural reserve to be created in Portugal
According to the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF)
the birth of these juveniles in a colony of about 3,000 flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) in one of the saltpans of the Nature Reserve of the Castro Marim Marsh and Vila Real de Santo António
proves the successful nesting of this species in Portugal
this nesting and its positive result "may be confirmed next year and become a recurring situation
which would represent an important adaptation of the species to different conditions than those it has always had in the usual places
thus allowing the diversification of the nesting sites and the maintenance of the species population in the Mediterranean geographical area"
The ICNF also stated that in the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve and the Tejo Estuary Natural Reserve
"around 50 nests have been built in each one"
either due to "alteration of the physical conditions that occurred in the sites
or because it was a very small number of couples
the nesting was not concluded" having occurred in these last two cases "abandonment of the sites"
The construction of nests by flamingos in Portugal has already been observed in Portugal since the late 1990s
the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and the Nature Reserve of the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marshland
their construction does not in itself mean confirmation of nesting
since "no young have ever been observed as being born in those places"
the owner of the land that maintained "all the environmental and safety conditions" that allowed the nesting success
as well as people and entities that from the first hour "were aware of the ongoing process and kept the necessary discretion
not publicising the nesting processes and their location
thus avoiding possible disturbance caused by curiosity" contributed to this result
Despite being a common winter bird in coastal wetlands from the Tagus estuary to the Algarve
nesting attempts had only been recorded in 2010
in recent years the flamingo population has been increasing in the country
even in wetlands where it was previously little observed
the species was still not nesting in Portugal
The decrease in human activity due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic
combined with the increase in feeding and resting areas for the species in Portugal - verified by nature monitors and technicians from ICNF's Centre for Migration Studies and Bird Protection - may have contributed to facilitating their successful reproduction
It's good to have various types of wildlife
A lot of people like to watch birds and animals
Were you wondering what this blue dragon actually is in the image above
the water body has the shape of a blue dragon
Located in the municipality of Castro Marim
the Odeleite Dam was built on the Odeleite river
which rises in the Serra do Caldeirão and is a tributary of the River Guadiana
The aerial photograph which showed the dam’s reservoir – shaped like a blue dragon – first went viral in the year 2015
as the dragon is an important symbol of power
the pattern was also traditionally used by emperors throughout history
the so-called ‘Blue Dragon River’ drew international attention in recent years
The picture was first taken by a traveller on a flight between Amsterdam and Marrakech
