which has been renamed FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias
will operate in Brazil's offshore waters under charter with state-owned oil company Petrobras
CIMC Raffles said this is the first FPSO conversion project in China that was completed within one yard
and the system commissioning were all carried out in the same shipyard
The FPSO was originally completed as a Malaysia-registered
300,000-tonne very large crude carrier (VLCC)
The vessel has an LOA of 341.2 metres (1,119 feet)
The total combined displacement of the new modules is about 44,000 tonnes
and the lightship displacement is more than 110,000 tonnes
The vessel has a 24-point mooring system and is capable of producing 180,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and processing 12 million cubic metres of natural gas per day while boasting an oil storage capacity of up to 1.45 million barrels
the FPSO will become one of the first vessels of its kind to employ high-pressure subsea separation (HISEP) technology to effectively reduce carbon release
The technology will allow oil and gas to be safely separated at the bottom of the ocean
Other technologies to reduce emissions include carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) systems to enable CO2-rich gas to be re-injected into the reservoir
Petrobras will deploy the FPSO in the Mero field of the Libra Block in the pre-salt area off the southeastern city of Rio de Janeiro
where it will process oil extracted from the wells in the field beginning in the second half of this year
which will be installed in a water depth of about 2,050 metres (6,730 feet)
has been engineered to operate for up to 30 years even without drydocking
The FPSO is part of Mero's third definitive production system and will increase the field's installed production capacity to 590,000 bopd

Delivery of FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and the VLCC Eagle Veracruz marks significant start to 2024, says group CEO
The MISC Group has started the year with two significant milestones, with naming ceremonies for an FPSO that will launch its entry into the Brazilian offshore sector and the last of a trio of LNG dual-fuel VLCCs built for a Shell charter.
The Malaysian shipping and offshore conglomerate’s giant floating production, storage and offloading vessel Marechal Duque de Caxias was named at CIMC Raffles shipyard in China on 17 January.
The vessel was converted from the 300,000-dwt tanker Bunga Kasturi Dua (built 2005) that previously operated in the fleet of AET, MISC’s tanker arm.
The FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias, MISC’s offshore business division’s first ultra-deepwater asset, will depart China in February and, once arriving off Brazil, will be stationed at Petrobras’ giant Mero oilfield in the Santos basin.
The Mero field is owned by the Libra Consortium, led by Petrobras with a 40% interest, and Shell and Total with 20% each.
MISC won the contract to supply the FPSO to Petrobras in August 2020, its first such contract with an international client not linked to its oil major majority shareholder Petronas. The contract has a duration of 22 years.
Touted as one of the largest and most sustainable FPSOs of its kind, the Marechal Duque de Caxias has been designed to accommodate Petrobras’ cutting-edge Hi-Sep system to allow for a greater reduction in carbon intensity through the dense separation of associated gas with CO2 content using subsea centrifugal pumps. The technology is scheduled to become operational at the Mero pre-salt basin in 2025.
Built with a high production capacity of 180,000 barrels of oil and 12m cubic metres of gas per day, the vessel is equipped with water alternating gas (WAG) reinjection technology, which MISC said exemplifies its strategy in carbon capture. Additionally, it can strip and reinject CO2 from fuel gas production, with a capacity to compress up to 48m standard cubic feet per day of CO2.
MISC said the Marechal Duque de Caxias conversion achieved over 28m safe man-hours with zero lost time injuries as of December 2023, “highlighting the Group’s focus on safety and operational excellence”.
This week, MISC tanker subsidiary AET held the naming ceremony for its 300,000-dwt crude tanker Eagle Veracruz in Singapore.
The vessel is the last in a series of three LNG dual-fuel VLCCs the company built against long-term charters to energy major Shell.
Classed by Lloyd’s Register, the Eagle Veracruz and its two sister ships are designed with state-of-the-art technologies, optimised hull forms and propellers, wake improvement ducts and rudder bulbs to further improve energy efficiency.
Describing the vessels as being among the most eco-friendly VLCCs available today, MISC said they comply with the International Maritime Organization’s 2025 Energy Efficiency Design Index Phase III, with a 99% reduction in SOx, 85% reduction in NOx and 95% particulate matter. The company said that when fully utilising LNG as fuel, the tanker’s emissions are about 16% lower than a comparable vessel using only heavy fuel oil.
AET was one of the first movers in the LNG dual-fuel tanker space. Currently, 15% of the company’s global tanker fleet is powered by LNG dual-fuel technology, and growing.
MISC said that while the shipping industry continues to transition to the next generation of cleaner and near-zero-emission fuel technology, it believes that LNG will still play a key role in the responsible transition.
MISC’s president and group chief executive Captain Rajalingam Subramaniam said the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and VLCC Eagle Veracruz, symbolise the company’s “focused and continuous commitment to supporting energy security and transition initiatives responsibly and sustainably globally”.
“As we embark on this purposeful journey into 2024, our teams at sea and shore are the driving energy behind our progress. We will continue to stay true to our aspirations of being a valued partner in a just and responsible global energy transition. As always, we extend our thanks to our clients and stakeholders for your trust in our brand and our global workforce,” he added.
As TradeWinds reported earlier on Wednesday, the Eagle Veracruz is the only VLCC scheduled for delivery this year.

Brazil's impoverished favelas are known to be a dangerous place for the people who live there
but they are also a threat to the countless stray animals that populate the maze-like streets
which is why one humane organization has built a miniature slum just for dogs and cats
where the stray dog and cat population booms do to lack of spaying and neutering facilities
the miniature shantytown is an attempt by the animal rights organization So Ama (Just Love) to care for the beasts that would otherwise be the victims of starvation
So Ama wanted to build a fully functioning shelter to look after all of the animals
but when they realized they did not have the funds to complete the project
they took inspiration from the surrounding city and began building simple doghouses out of cobbled together wood and sheet metal
Housing more than 1,600 dogs and 200 cats among the 1,000 unadorned units tightly packed onto the organization's property
So Ama's facility mirrors the conditions of millions of impoverished Brazilians in the surrounding area with eerie accuracy
Unfortunately the dogs and cats also face many of the same problems
While the furry hooverville is partially subsidized by government funds
most of So Ama's money comes from donations
However it requires a purported 13 tons of food a month to feed the population of animals
not to mention any veterinary services manny of the formerly homeless animals need
and the charity the organization receives rarely covers the costs
Thus the dogs and cats in the Caxias do Sul favela live most of their lives just like the humans: simply trying to get by

Text description provided by the architects. The house is located in an urban hillside of villas facing a privileged view of the West Jamor Valley.
The slope of a long and narrow plot inspired the genesis of the concept of property; a volumetric assimilation of the house as part of outer space. The house is the garden itself on its outer surface.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe four elevations and roof operate as garden areas as well as their concrete support walls. Given the slope, the house presents two ends in contrast: the West side, with an almost nonexistent façade with a gradual entry into the house and the East side is a fully opened object facing the lovely valley.
the house is hardly perceived from the road
revealing itself as an exception to the street morphology: a plot without a house

May 13 – The 24th Summer Deaflympics has proven to be a totally enjoyable culinary experience for Team Kenya for many reasons
remained a daily hard choice for the team members because everything on the menu is so good as what is available back home
meat and sausages are some of the delicacies Kenyans continue to enjoy through and through in Brazil’s remote southern town
But one man has indeed become an off-the-pitch star attraction not for his magnificent role as a Deaf sign language interpreter for the Deaf athletes
but for his terrific cooking skills when matters Ugali fall into place
Ali Abdi is the man who has been preparing Ugali for Team Kenya in Caxias do Sul and
ensures that Kenya’s staple food isn’t missed by any of the team members
they carried sufficient maize flour (unga) for use during the prestigious Games
Asked about his new role as a “cook”
Abdi narrated: “Ugali symbolizes strength in our culture
and it’s also very delicious when eaten with other delicacies
It was important for us to have something for ourselves from home that would give us confidence and connect us to home.”
Even though the food might be the same as what Kenyans eat back home
“Our ugali was just like what we have back home
We carried everything we needed to prepare it and we shared it together as a team for team spirit.”
The food in Brazil is typically the same as the what is served in Kenya with just a bit of variation in taste and how it’s made here
it’s familiar but not quite like home.” Abdi went on
Abdi is happy for the level of excitement the team members in Brazil have shown on the days they plan to eat Ugali
“Everyone was anticipating all day for dinner time and the players felt even more confident after a good meal of Ugali and stew
“And to be honest Ugali is much sweeter on foreign soil than you would expect in Kenya.”
Abdi also reveals the fun and enjoyable experience of cooking for his compatriots on foreign soil
“It was also my way to extend care and gratitude of the team
We wanted to make our Ugali just the same way it is prepared at home
Everyone was counting on us to deliver a homemade meal and we did.”
Abdi is grateful for the Brazilian hospitality and cuisine
we’ve trained in a nearby football pitch and those living within the neighborhood have been very friendly and welcoming.”
We’re also fortunate to be hosted by a very warm and welcoming hotel service
the hotel manager really takes care of us and has made sure we are comfortable
We sometimes take a walk and enjoy the many oranges from the trees in the neighborhood.”
The remote nature of Caxius Do Sul has handed the team a unique and enabling environment to concentrate with training
Abdi reckons that it’s been a great exposure
“The flights were long but they were all anticipating and looking forward to seeing a new country and to participate in the Deaflympics
Everyone was hyped especially the first timers who boarded the flight for the first time
It was amazing how excited we all were to come to Brazil.”
