A woman saw luck knock on her door in Condeixa-a-Nova
Earlier this month a woman in Condeixa-a-Nova in the Coimbra district bought a 10 euro scratch card on a trip to the café and she ended up winning half a million euros
According to Diário de Coimbra, the scratch card was bought at Café Aquário by a regular customer of the establishment
which this year was celebrated on 4th of March
the owners of the space said that the woman regularly plays and
the lady didn't even realise she had won so much money," said Samuel Carvalho Lamas
adding that it was an employee who realised the happy outcome when checking whether the scratch card had any prizes
"I don't think she realised right away," the owner recalled
The woman was advised to take precautions and go to a Gaming Department to validate the scratch card and receive the prize
In 1998, Café Aquário had already given another big prize, when a man won the Totoloto

NEW YORK — The art of Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro is being displayed openly at the Times Square’s Nasdaq OMX Group in New York City.
His work will be shown daily, at random, alternately, lasting several minutes in each session, until Dec. 31.
Santiago Ribeiro, a native of Condeixa-a-Nova, has been dedicated to promoting the Surrealism of the 21st century in several parts of the world, including Paris, Belgrade, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Moscow , Warsaw, Florence, Podgorica, Montenegro, Timisoara in Romania and Dallas.
He is the driving force and the promoter of the international project "Surrealism Now," which began in 2010 in Coimbra, Portugal, organized by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation.
Text description provided by the architects. The new Condeixa-a-Nova Public Library, a town near the historic university city of Coimbra, is a recent project, sponsored by the local authority, and planned to integrate an important equipments area of the town, such as schools, sports fields and parks.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe project is based on a clear and functional distribution, allowing the library being organized and understood by its users. In the biggest volume are located the public areas, while the narrower body contains all the dependencies of internal services. The whole system is fully computerized and accessible to people with some type of disability.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe spatial hierarchy is also enhanced by the different scales used in windows
marking the different characteristics of the spaces of adults
The first clearly looks over the surrounding green space
offering generous south openings that are efficiently controlled by a metallic brise-soleil
The remaining spaces have more punctual windows
avoiding the aggressive west sunlight by adjusting its size to the nature of its activities
crossing the roof in the form of conical skylights
complements the more traditional forms of lighting
marking the most important spaces of the building with light sets that vary throughout the day

and Santiago Ribeiro and American artists France Garrido
is the continuation of the itinerant collective series promoted by the “International Surrealism Now” project comprising of variety of artworks
created through different techniques and media
Santiago Ribeiro founded the “International Surrealism Now” project
a collective exhibits series dedicated to showcasing Surrealism as an art form. Last year
he was invited to participate in the “Fantastic Realism” exhibit
an international collective promoted by the LuminArte Gallery of Dallas
attended art classes at the Escola Avelar Brotero and Escola Superior de Educação of Coimbra
He has organized and participated in numerous individual and collective art exhibitions in Portugal and abroad
His work is represented in several private collections as well as in the Collection of Contemporary Art of the National Museum Machado de Castro and in the Bissaya Barreto Foundation in Coimbra
Ribeiro’s metaphoric surrealist imagery surprises
(See Photo Gallery). His paintings have been described as “complex compositions illustrating deep concerns about modern society and its individual and collective behavior.”
In this interview for the Portuguese American Journal
Santiago Ribeiro speaks of his development as a surrealist painter
Surrealism as an art form and his “International Surrealism Now” initiative
I started painting as a child and continued experimenting mostly with primary colors
It all began after my father brought home a library of 40 art books with illustrations from the Middle Ages throughout the classics of the Renaissance to the masters of Impressionism and Surrealism and other contemporary modern artists
I couldn’t read the books but I was fascinated by the imagery
I remember being particularly captivated by the fantastic allegories of Hieronymus Bosch as well as the impressionist and surrealist art forms
Studying those illustrations was my first painting lesson because they inspired me to start painting on my own
What is your background training as a painter
I consider myself a self-taught artist. Actually
I was only sixteen when I produced my first oil painting
painting became my profession and I started selling my paintings to make a living
I attended a couple of art schools but I dropped out because I enjoyed painting more than going to classes
It was difficult to coordinate school and work
I consider that attending art classes was very helpful to my artistic development
How did you come to identify with Surrealism
I believe I was always a surrealist painter
I was a surrealist painter before I realized what Surrealism was
I only became aware of Freud’s theories of dreams and Surrealism as an art form later in my career
I was creating surrealist imagery as a way of expressing myself not being aware of Surrealism as an art form
How has Surrealism evolved into your painting
Surrealism allows for absolute unlimited unrestrained freedom
Surrealist painters tend to absorbed all kinds of influences from all kinds of art forms
It also allows for individuality and diversity
Each one of us ends up developing our own unique style
creating original paintings that are truly distinctive
I have developed my own distinctive technique and style
we end up being labeled as “surrealist” artists
What does the “surreal” mean to you as an artist
Surrealist imagery draws from dreams and visions allowing the unconscious to express itself
I feel compelled to create dreamlike imagery emerging from the stream of unconsciousness
Do you have a reference or someone who has influenced you
Hieronymus Bosch has always been an important reference to me
He has inspired and influenced me since I was a child and started experimenting with painting
Is the “surreal” a means to an end in itself for you
It is a creative process that happens free from preset ideas
What fascinates you the most about Surrealism
I feel totally free to create whatever I feel like
Surrealist aesthetics taps the subconscious through the free association of images and thoughts
It is a creative process which comes from deep within
very much influenced by the real and the unreal in which dreams play an import role
Dreams are based in reality as reality is based in dreams
What are the recurrent themes in your work and why
The human form is definitely a recurrent theme in my paintings
Other recurrent themes are the yellow and red as dominant colors
Some surrealists are more descriptive while others are more abstract in their narratives
I envision what I want to represent and I try to make it happen
it takes technique and skill to give form to that visualization
I must say that more often than not I am not able to represent what I have envisioned
It is part of the creative process to be surprised with the end result
I often find myself bemused by my own creations which become revelations to me
I feel surprised by what I see – like I am seeing it for the first time
I find myself experiencing the same sense of revelation as any other person seeing the painting for the first time
Many have defined Surrealism is an art movement set in the beginning of the 20th century
How do you explain that the movement continues to thrive
Surrealism existed before and after the 20th century. It belongs to all ages and cultures past
Surrealism has survived the test of time because it is tied to dreams
To dream is inherent to the human condition and Surrealism is the creative process that best serves the human need to represent dreams and visions in a continuum with little variations
In the 20th century there were attempts made to framework Surrealism as an aesthetic art form
The effort failed to materialize because Surrealism is about freedom of expression
Surrealism will prevail as long as there is the human need to express oneself spontaneously in freedom with creativity
Where did you get the idea for your project “International Surrealism Now”
The idea came about when I realized the power of the internet to communicate and connect with fellow artists and the public
I found out we could organize projects collectively with local institutions and groups worldwide
We started working with local artists promoting inclusive group events open to diverse artistic expressions such as poetry
Our first group initiative took place in 2008 when we organized an international collective exhibit at the Casa Museu Bissaya Barreto
This event led to broader initiatives and to the creation in 2010 of the “International Surrealism Now” project
Your “International Surrealism Now” project has promoted exhibits in over 30 countries
proposed my participation at the “Fantastic Realism” exhibit
American Surrealist Shahla Rosa proposed the realization of a collective exhibit at the LuminArt Gallery bringing together Portuguese and American surrealist artists which we titled “Luso-American Surrealism of the 21st Century.”
Is Surrealism in Portugal any different from any other forms of Surrealism
There isn’t anything unique to Surrealism in Portugal that I am aware of
because we are all influenced by our environment
Portuguese surrealist painters will use references explicit to their environment that one can easily identify
the city where I was born and where I live
the town where I spent time as a child and where I did my first painting
Other easily identifiable references in my paintings include elements from the Portuguese architecture and from our national monuments
Do you have one favorite painting in your personal portfolio
I can’t say I have one favorite painting
Most of my paintings are sold quickly and I may not see them again
What I can say is that I have two particular paintings that I am much attached to and that I will not sell
One was painted in 1997 and the other in 1998
They must mean something special because I just can’t let them go
They give me a deep feeling of accomplishment and the sense that I will never be able to create anything like that ever again
It happens when I get a sense of completion and closure and I feel the urge to start something new

the truth is that Portugal has a huge contrast of landscapes
hiding some ‘secret places’ (or almost)
perfect for those who don’t want crowds
This place is so ‘secret’ that it is literally underwater. In the municipality of Terras do Bouro, in the district of Braga, there is a village lost to time and the waters of the river Homem
the 300 or so residents of Vilarinho das Furnas were forced to abandon their homes due to the construction of a dam
the testimonies of the past are ‘hidden’
during periods of drought or when the dam is emptied for maintenance
That’s why some people come here in the hope of seeing the village
but also simply to enjoy the absolute silence in an enchanting landscape
The Alentejo is a very special region, with its own unique landscape of picturesque villages and medieval castles
it is also an area with several ‘natural treasures’
Located between the towns of São Luís and Odemira , Pego das Pias is a wild beach that attracts visitors because of its natural pools
It is isolated and surrounded by lush vegetation that invites you to relax
the name Pedras Par ideiras may sound strange
‘hidden’ in one of Portugal’s ‘secret’ places
creating the illusion of other stones ‘giving birth’
they were associated with fertility rituals in local villages
the Casa das Pedras Parideiras offers guided tours and information for anyone wishing to learn more about this phenomenon
To end this ‘trip’ on a high note, how about a visit to another of the secret places off the main tourist routes
we’re taking you to the Serra de Sicó
to discover the Vale das Buracas do Casmilo
this place has a large concentration of sinkholes
the result of the collapse of the central part of an underground pipe
it is also an option for those who enjoy nature trails
with amazing scenery and literally in the middle of nowhere
Each of these places is an opportunity to breathe in tranquillity
broaden horizons and live memorable experiences
So how about including some of these destinations in your next adventure
Distrito de Coimbra has very few earthquakes and most of them are very small (below magnitude 3)
Larger quakes with magnitudes above 3 might occur from time to time
Based on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900
there are about 28.3 quakes on average per year in or near Distrito de Coimbra
Distrito de Coimbra has had at least 3 quakes above magnitude 4 since 1970
which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently
probably on average approximately every 15 to 20 years
Distrito de Coimbra has about 14.9 quakes of magnitude 2 or higher per year
The quake was too small to be felt by people
Distrito de Coimbra has had 1 quake of magnitude 3.1 and 14 quakes between 2.0 and 3.0
There have been also 14 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel
The strongest earthquake in Distrito de Coimbra since 2025 had a magnitude of 3.1 and occurred 11 weeks ago: Mag. 3.1 earthquake Portugal - Feb 15, 2025 - writeAge(1739610598)A light magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean near the coast of Portugal in the morning of Saturday
The quake had a shallow depth of 50 km (31 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so)
Nigeria and Algeria are the African countries to be present in the next edition of Surrealism Now
the largest World Surrealism exhibition of the 21st century which gathers art work from more than 48 countries in Portugal from December 23
are looking for more active participation from the African continent in this event with a great international appeal
Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro feels that Africa has strong cultural influences and a role to play on the international scene
“due to the large African presence in Portugal
especially from the five Afro-Portuguese countries
it is only natural that African art is included and showcased in this international art exhibit.”
in an attempt to take art to the people en masse – and promote the largest group exhibit of surrealist art this winter — Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro is teasing the public with flash images of his work in the most famous intersection of the world: Times Square
colorful paintings will be shown sporadically – flashed on random days at random times — on the Nasdaq OMX Group and Thomson Reuters sign screens in New York City until December 31
They will be up for three whole minutes on the Reuter’s screen for each appearance – ample time for tens of thousands of pedestrians to catch a glimpse
“As always I´m doing something different and the idea to exhibit in Times Square in New York shows how the mass media is also our modern means to show our art,” Ribeiro said
Ribeiro’s work has been featured at the U.S
Praad in Portuguese and many other publications
The exhibition sponsors include Bissaya Barreto Foundation
Condeixa a Nova House Mayor and MagicCraftsman Studio
Ribeiro conceived the International Surrealism Now movement in 2010 in Coimbra with a major exhibit organised by Bissaya Barreto
The pieces of art from the International Surrealism Now exhibit will be on display at the multimedia POROS Museum in Condeixa-a-Nova from December 23rd
Billed as the largest world exhibition of contemporary Surrealism art in Europe – with more than 100 artists from 48 countries participating – the exhibit of paintings
photographs and sculpture is also expected to be shown
at several monuments and public spaces throughout Portugal
