A €15.4 million investment has been made in Portugal’s first facility that will produce hydrolysed protein for the aquafeed sector the facility is a key component of the Pep4Fish project focusing on large-scale production of protein hydrolysates designed for fish feed Sebol has stated that the construction of its new industrial facility is well underway in Coruche, with, as the ETSA Group claims, a crucial advancement in sustainability and innovation for aquaculture. Driven by the national PRR, and integrated into the blue bioeconomy pact the Group believes this project is an integral part of the Pep4Fish initiative with a primary focus on the large-scale production of innovative products - protein hydrolysates specifically tailored for fish feed head of the research department at the ETSA Group expresses optimism about the value generated by this new production unit stating in a press release: “Sebol is very optimistic about the significance of this new production unit representing the first nationally produced hydrolysed protein with a focus on fish feed at an industrial level This marks a significant step that will contribute to efficient and sustainable fish production.” Protein hydrolysates are superfoods developed from animal by-products this process involves utilising by-products from fish guided by the various phases of the Pep4Fish project's research these high-value-added hydrolysates will be incorporated into feeds for sea bass and gilt-head bream and promoting sustainability in aquaculture spanning approximately 9,000 square metres is slated for completion in the second half of 2024 serving as a catalyst for sustainability and innovation significantly contributing to the agri-food sector in Portugal This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker a worker checks cork disks to be used in champagne bottle stoppers being produced at a plant in Coruche in the southern Alentejo region of Portugal workers armed with razor sharp axes spend their days carefully harvesting cork trees which is highly skilled and has used the same methods for hundreds of years and involves diligently separating the outer and inner bark A single cork tree can live for more than 200 years and during that time it can be harvested once every nine years after the age of 25 recyclable and biodegradable – has expanded well beyond the wine industry Portugal produces an estimated 100,000 tonnes of cork annually and it is now used for everything from a vegan alternative to leather to a natural option for flooring Responsible for 63 per cent of global cork output equivalent to approximately €986.3 million industry advocates also highlight the fact that the sector provides decent setting an example for other industries as the world transitions to its low carbon future In Portugal, Corticeira Amorim – the world’s biggest producer of cork products – is currently developing solutions to build an entire house of cork through a modular construction system. Cork has also been used by Mercedes-Benz to make an eco-friendly car prototype with everything from the dashboard to the steering wheel lined with the material Cork’s energy efficiency is ever more pertinent as the world scrambles to cool rising temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions cork is the only tree that can have its bark removed without killing it researcher Rui Novais from and his team are developing new applications for cork - particularly in the construction industry One of their focuses is an ecologically friendly cement that contains cork to be used as an alternative to traditional thermal insulating materials His team has also been looking into producing renewable fuels through cork-based ceramics used as a catalyst to separate carbon dioxide with concentrated sunlight “We have been focusing on materials in the context of the circular economy,” Novais tells Equal Times Cork is extracted every ten years through a natural process and its ability to absorb CO2 makes it doubly advantageous.” Novais and his team have found that by adding cork to eco-cements they can effectively shield buildings with a material that provides good thermal acoustic insulation “There are two different applications: to shied buildings against electromagnetic radiation pollution we need to add pyrolyzed cork in small quantities while to have thermal and acoustic insulators we use cork [without any pre-treatment] in high volumes,” Novais explains Amidst a growing interest in sustainability significant investment has enabled the development of new and unexpected uses of cork But the industry is also faced with a challenge: ensuring that Portugal’s 736,000 hectares of cork oak forests are better managed “Sustainable forest management is so important,” says Angela Morgado executive director at Associação Natureza Portugal (Portugal Nature Association a non-profit Portuguese NGO dedicated to the conservation of nature and the protection of the planet in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and we know that it provides so many important environmental benefits like retaining carbon dioxide and regulating soil.” As climate change drives increasingly longer dry periods, cork forests are an important way to avoid forest fires like the deadly Pedrógão Grande wildfires in 2017. As early as 2006, the WWF warned in a report titled Cork Screwed that the future of 2.7 million hectares of cork oat forests in Portugal Tunisia and France were at risk of desertification and forest fires if (the then) predicted decline in the cork stoppers market led to the conversion of lands to other Today, the Green Heart of Cork project aims to conserve the world’s largest area of cork oak forests – in the lower valley of the Tejo (or Tagus) and Sado river basins – by compensating landowners who contribute towards good farming and forest practices “The fact that cork oak forests are semi-natural implies that they have to be managed or else it is probable that it will evolve towards another kind of system,” explains Rui Barreira Portugal is badly affected by desertification and cork trees act as an important safeguard improve soil’s organic material and contribute to the regulation of the hydrological cycle Portugal’s national School of Agronomy (ISA) estimates that cork oak forests can fixate around 6 tonnes of CO2 per hectare – which in Portugal translates to over 4 million hectares per year the cork tree is considered a ‘priority species’ by the WWF/ANP in the fight against desertification and climate change Although cork is harvested by hand using ancient techniques technology is playing an increasingly large role in the industry with companies like Corticeira Amorim investing heavily in innovation in quality control screening technology called NDtech to root out TCA one of the chemical compounds considered responsible for cork taint The cork industry also provides direct jobs for approximately 12,000 to 14,000 workers in Portugal in addition to 6,500 jobs in forest extraction and thousands more indirect jobs and although they work is short-term and seasonal (harvest usually takes place between June and July) they are typically paid a day rate of between €80 and €120 Most tiradors also receive health care and other benefits The introduction of new technology is also helping to create new graduate-level roles. According to a 2018 article by Forbes Corticeira Amorim’s NDtech has created jobs for a new generation of educated workers cork industry jobs tend to be above average in terms of remuneration and working conditions according to the Portuguese trade union SINDCES “It is a dynamic sector because it is focused on exports and it is adapting to new products that go beyond the wine industry for instance,” says Pedro Barqueiro from SINDCES Portugal’s main cork association APCOR is optimistic regarding the future of cork In a written statement to Equal Times it said the sector had seen an average wage increase of 2.4 per cent in the last year the cork industry has registered an average yearly increase of 4.5 per cent having reached a value of €1 billion in 2018 These figures allow us to look towards the future with enthusiasm and optimism.” If there is such an optimism on the cork industry why does Corticeira Amorim want to lower the prices of the cork itself Equal Times is a and Joana do Vale are two Portuguese Grand Prix riders based at the famous Böckmann stable in Lastrup who juggle a busy life of professional horse riding with raising five kids At the start of 2024 they feel the Olympic fire burning as Portugal qualified a team for Paris The couple signed a partnership with Johannes Heinrichs for a boutique style while getting support for their Olympic campaign The Do Vales have a family yard in Coruche (POR) but knew that in order to succeed in international dressage sport they needed to be closer to the heart of it....in Germany Thirteen years ago they arrived in Germany to work and learn while gradually expanding their family from one child to a merry bunch of five A decade of dedication and love for horses has led Antonio to become a Portuguese squad listed Grand Prix rider Antonio and FidertanzAntonio's career in the saddle took off thanks to the unwavering support of the Böckmann family who opened their home and stable to the couple and gave them their first major horses to ride "We were lucky to meet the Böckmann family and owe them a lot," Antonio do Vale told Eurodressage "They welcomed us warmly and supported us since day one without questioning We have been with Böckmann for 12 years  and we intend to stay We work with a diversity of clients and have different projects and businesses together Over the past ten years the Do Vale couple saw their family grow from one to five children "We are two ordinary riders with great sporting ambitions," said Antonio who first trained with Jurgen Koschel in Germany "We always intended to be fully committed to our professional career but also prioritized what we see as our life project Francisca do Vale part of Team BöckmannAntonio explained that as long as he remembers even before becoming a high performance athlete For Joana (née Serra Lopes) it started the other way round: she was more focused on sport in her childhood and as a young adult before the biological clock started ticking "I realized that many female athletes give up their family dream for sport," Joana explained "I also had a big sport dream of the highest level but I wanted to try to do both together and not necessarily wait for the big achievements in the arena before I start a family." but as a couple they jumped the hurdles and found true joy in both aspects of life "Being an athlete is already difficult and requires so much dedication and effort," Antonio stated "and our growing family made it even more challenging but we both desired it and went for it." In 2014 their first daughter Maria was born and after that came Teresa de Jesus in 2020 and Jose Maria joined the family in 2023 In between babies Joana competed Daniel Ramseier's Ribery (later sold to Yoshie Ota) and Pavla Rubickova's Xangai at Grand Prix level Since their time in Germany the couple competed at national and international level Both earned their Golden Rider Badge in 2019 for 10 S-level placings With Fine Fellow H at the 2023 CDI-W StuttgartAntonio internationally campaigned Vicomte Fidertanz and his own Paris hopeful Fine Fellow H Joana focused more on national level sport but also rode into the CDI ring with Bem Me Quer in 2017 and 2018 and with Shruti Vora's Magnanimous in 2023 Antonio's number one ride in the barn is Johann Heinrichs' Fine Fellow H with whom he established his name in Grand Prix level sport After winning the 2019 Oldenburg Regional Championships and competing in the 2020 Nurnberger and Louisdor cup qualifiers the pair made its CDI debut in 2021 and is now squad listed for Portugal In 2022 they were ranked #75 in the world and in 2023 named reserve to the team for the European Championships in Riesenbeck Joana has two FEI level horses coming along: Grand Prix horse For My Love H (by  For Romance x San Amour) and small tour ride Flash Gordon H (by For Romance x Sandro Hit) Both will start their international career in 2024 Not letting a band of five kids be a hurdle for a sport career the Do Vales bring their brood to all the horse shows "Everybody knows us for our big family because our children come along and help," Joana said with a smile “Competition is a natural part of our life but so is our family We try to keep them involved," Antonio added Portuguese squad riders with team trainer Kyra Kyrklund at the 2023 CDI HagenThrough business partner Böckmann the Do Vales came in contact with several individuals that have been guides on their path in particular trainer Wolfram Wittig and horse owner Johannes Heinrichs "Wittig made us completely different riders showing us how the classical German riding is based much more on the basic work and the horses fresh and healthy for the big ring," said Antonio Antonio also works with Portuguese team trainer Kyra Kyrklund from whom he first got lessons in 2007 while still living in Portugal "It is a joy to to have the chance to ride under Kyra's advise and expertise," Antonio added a business man with an international show jumping barn in Weert (NED) and a Global Champions League team and set up a thriving partnership with him Antonio getting interviewed in Kronberg"Johannes has a passion for Portugal and also does business there," Joana explained "He had some dressage horses and a very interesting project in mind which we totally identified with His dream is to take two Portuguese riders to the Olympic Games and make this project a profitable one." Heinrichs has allocated Antonio and Joana the ride on six of horses all from different ages and scouted and acquired by himself "He wants them to be schooled through the levels to Grand Prix and then selected to either compete with us or to be sold to a very exclusive type of client He wants to establish a brand of exclusivity good quality horses that got quality training instead of doing industrialiazed horse dealing we see so much at this moment." The Grand Prix level horses are retained to establish the brand and try for the Olympic Games talented stars will be offered to 5* homes and riders Joana on Lolypop with whom she was third at the Oldenburg Regional Championships"The idea is to always keep the smaller number of horses to ensure maximum attention and care," said Joana "Nowadays there are many horses with impeccable quality but our focus is training while respecting them as animals Customers want something exclusive that is not really for sale and tried out by a dozen clients rather than those already tired from doing the miles at home and in the show ring."
