why not take your time getting to Madrid and have some adventures on the way © Getty Images
Sometimes the journey is almost as good as the vacation itself, and traveling by train from Lisbon to Madrid certainly ticks that box
the overnight train service meant you fell asleep in Portugal and woke up the next day in the Spanish capital
While it was certainly quicker than the current route
it also meant you saw none of the incredible views and charming towns that rolled past the carriage window
Take the time to explore parts of Portugal and Spain you've never seen before on a delightful journey full of new discoveries – you'll never regret it
Although it’s not immediately apparent on the ticket
the Portuguese leg of the trip isn't direct and requires a transfer in the town of Entroncamento
I board a train that departs from Lisbon’s Santa Apolónia station at 7:45am – a commuter train
which means no assigned seating nor cafe car
and the train hugs the left bank of the Tagus River
the landscape shifting from industrial-feeling suburbs outside Lisbon to marshy fields after an hour or so
oak trees and the occasional vineyard estate
We pull into Entroncamento around two hours later and I only have a few minutes to quickly transfer to my next train
the location of my next and final transfer
If your train from Entroncamento is on time
it’s possible to make an almost direct transfer to a Madrid-bound train
But I wanted the chance to have lunch and explore Badajoz
giving me nearly four hours to burn in this historic city
The train station is in the new part of town
a 15-minute walk to the more interesting old town
cross the 15th-century Puente de Palmas footbridge and enter town via the Puerta de Palmas
is a more upscale option located slightly farther outside the city center)
This 12th-century Moorish citadel is the largest in Spain
and today functions as both archaeological site and public park
It’s possible to explore the gardens within the walls
which offer great views of town and the river
I return to the river and cross the Puerta de Palmas back to the station to catch my final train
only waking as we pull into Madrid’s hectic Atocha station at 10pm
Approximately 13 hours after having boarded my first train in Lisbon
Trains are operated by two different, unlinked entities: Comboios de Portugal and Renfe. This means you’ll need to book two sets of tickets to cover both countries.
The trains on the Portuguese side are commuter or regional trains and don’t have cafe cars. The Badajoz to Madrid train has a dining car that serves basic bites and drinks. There is a cafe at Badajoz’s train station that serves basic snacks and drinks.
There are no luggage lockers in Badajoz’s train station – traveling with a compact case or backpack will make exploring the city a lot easier. Wi-fi is not available in the stations or on the trains.
In the last couple years, strikes led by employees of the state-run Comboios de Portugal (CP) have led to the cancellation of as many as half the country’s trains on multiple occasions. Before buying tickets, do a quick search or check CP’s website to see if a strike is in progress or about to happen.

CP - Comboios de Portugal has commissioned a study regarding demand for regional services and has also put out to tender the study of night trains between Galicia and the Algarve
At issue is a contract signed with the consultancy firm Trenmo providing for a study on the regional service on the Porto-Entroncamento axis
within the scope of a competition for demand studies for regional services on the Minho
carried out to finance the purchase of 55 regional railcars included in the order for 117 trains
the first covering the Minho Line and its "potential market for regional and long-distance transport demand
namely on the high-speed axis between Lisbon/Porto/Vigo/A Coruña and connection to Francisco Sá Carneiro airport"
This lot foresees "the analysis of six supply scenarios that cover the Lisbon-Porto-Corunha international trains (in a first phase High Speed + conventional and in a second phase only High Speed)
Faro-Corunha international trains (conventional and night
regional and interregional offer Porto-Viana do Castelo – Valença"
The second lot concerns the section of the Northern Line between Porto and Entroncamento
aiming at three scenarios that encompass the "paced offer of the Regional train
on the Coimbra-Aveiro section and on the Entroncamento-Coimbra section
with the extension of this offer to Figueira da Foz" and a "new interregional offer between Lisbon and Porto at night"
which concerns the Beira Alta and Beira Baixa lines
the study will analyse the "demand for regional
medium and long-distance transport over Lisbon and Porto and international connections to Salamanca"
Three scenarios are envisaged that cover the "long-distance supply on the Beira Alta and Beira Baixa Lines
Lisbon-Covilhã-Guarda-Pampilhosa-Lisbon; Lisbon-Covilhã
Lisbon-Covilhã-Guarda (analyzing the feasibility of its extension to Porto) and on the Porto-Guarda-Covilhã section"
This lot also provides for the analysis of the "regional and interregional offer on the Beira Alta and Beira Baixa Lines" and "the existence of High-Speed services with a stop in Coimbra that allows transfers between the conventional offer and High Speed"
As for the last lot, which refers to the Algarve Line and the study of demand and regional and long-distance transport on the connection to Lisbon and Évora, CP intends to study five scenarios that cover
the "regional offer on the Tavira-Faro axis and long-distance offer between Lisbon and Vila Real de Santo António
between Porto-Lisbon-Faro and between Lisbon-Lagos" and the "regional and interregional offer on the Faro-Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António-Faro sections"
The analysis also includes "Braga-Vila Real de Santo António high-speed trains"
which also aim to "enhance the connection to the international southern corridor - long-distance train between Faro-Elvas"
the aim is to evaluate the potential passenger demand in the areas of influence" of the lots analyzed "over a 30-year horizon
according to scenarios of socioeconomic and infrastructure evolution and the supply of railway services"
The future high-speed line should connect Porto and Lisbon in one hour and 15 minutes
The Porto-Vigo journey is estimated to take 50 minutes
The first phase (Porto-Soure) of the high-speed line in Portugal is expected to be completed in 2030
and the second phase (Soure-Carregado) is scheduled for completion in 2032
connecting to Lisbon via the Northern Line
As for the connection between Porto and Vigo
stations are planned at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport
We appreciate that not everyone can afford to pay for our services but if you are able to
we ask you to support The Portugal News by making a contribution – no matter how small
You can change how much you give or cancel your contributions at any time
I notice that CP are only intending to study the proposals
Authorities have been talking about a new airport for Lisbon for over fifty years now
I doubt any of this will happen in my lifetime!
No point in enlarging/upgrading the rail network unless they resolve issues with unions
Twice we have booked in advance for long journeys and twice cancelled due to industrial action
Flying from Faro to Porto is cheaper and quicker and buses are more reliable

Action
continues to grow in Portugal to meet growing demand.
The company will open a new store in Entroncamento
This is the third Action store in Portugal
“We are very happy to open our first store in Santarém and our third in Portugal
after opening our first store in the country less than a month ago
This is an important step in our expansion project
We will continue to strengthen our presence in Portugal as more and more Portuguese want to enjoy the unique experience that Action offers”
“We are very happy with the warm welcome we received from the Portuguese
which strengthens the commitment of our teams
I want to thank everyone who contributed to this achievement: our employees
Action is creating a total of 19 new jobs in Santarém
Let us hope ‘Action’ they do not pull the same stunt in the exact same way both ‘LIDL' and the ‘Aldi’s' of this world have in Portugal i.e
pretending to be the affordable or cheaper option but when one looks carefully
so many of their products are actually much more expensive
Quinta da Cardiga in Golegã will undergo renovations and be converted into a hotel with equestrian facilities.
In a unique initiative that the Golegã Council feels will benefit the entire Ribatejo region
which has been designated as a property of public interest since 1952
Quinta da Cardiga will now undergo renovations to be converted into a four-star hotel with 116 rooms and amenities related to equestrianism
Quinta da Cardiga is situated between Vila Nova da Barquinha
and Golegã on the north bank of the River Tagus
The site includes not only the main building but also industrial and agricultural facilities
“Considering the tourism development we have had in the municipality of Golegã
this type of offer is differentiating and is aimed at a type of tourist with certain demands that we also need
but they need more differentiating solutions
With construction expected to begin in 2025
besides the equestrianism facilities as a covered and open-air riding arena
the hotel will also feature football and padel fields
gyms and an indoor and outdoor swimming pools
“The Quinta da Cardiga is a palace and a listed building and is in the memory of all those who live in Golegã
but also in the municipalities of Entroncamento and Vila Nova da Barquinha
Everyone has been waiting for many years for this requalification to be possible and now it seems that we have finally taken a safe step forward with a group that has proven itself in this type of project”
Spain has a new train line and CP will adjust the offer on the Eastern Line
shortening the journey between Lisbon and Madrid from July 31
The Iberian capitals will be two hours and one transfer away
Spain's Renfe tried to convince CP to launch a..
The trip starts in an Intercity from Lisbon
changes to a green diesel Allan in Entroncamento and
there will be nine hours and three different trains between the two Iberian capitals - two less than at present - with the reinforcement of the offer by CP and also by the Spanish company Renfe
CP will adjust the supply on the East Line on July 31 to respond to the new rail infrastructure that Spain has just introduced between Madrid and Badajoz (we'll be there in a minute)
not only will the train connection between Lisbon and the Spanish capital be shortened by two hours (from 11 to nine hours)
but it will also take three trains instead of four (that is
two transfers instead of three) to make the trip
the trip will take nine hours and 30 minutes
two daily trains per direction instead of one
there is only one connection leaving Santa Apolónia at 8:45 am and arriving at Badajoz at 2:14 pm
passing through Entroncamento; and in the opposite direction
leaving Badajoz at 4:24 pm and arriving in Lisbon at 8:20 pm
But since Renfe will only put Intercity on one daily connection per direction between Badajoz and Madrid
taking the train that exists today would force a long waiting time in the Spanish border city
On the East Line, the Allan green railcars will continue to run, according to Público journalist Carlos Cipriano
"it's the oldest equipment CP has in its service and they only run on the Eastern Line"
They were built in Holland in the 1950s and have had their life span extended with a modernization carried out in the 1990s
They circulate at a maximum speed of 100 km/h
"the breakdowns of these vehicles in the Alto Alentejo have been frequent".
Carlos Cipriano writes that CP doesn't have more modern diesel-powered equipment for the Eastern Line because the existing fleet is in use on the Douro
Western and Algarve lines - only with the electrification of these stretches and the arrival of new
will it be possible to free up diesel-powered cars for other services that
With limited service on the Portuguese side
it was in Spanish territory that less travel time was gained between the two Iberian capitals
a new 150-kilometer high-speed section between Badajoz and Plasencia; still without electrification (it will only be done next year)
be 180 km/h - instead of the future 250 km/h -
which still guarantees a 51-minute shorter trip between Badajoz and Madrid than in the past
but its partner CP showed no interest in using the East Line for this
preferring the Beira Alta and the connection to Spain through Salamanca
O ECO journalist Diogo Ferreira Nunes writes that with an understanding between Renfe and CP for the extension of the Intercity to Lisbon
the trip could be shortened to seven hours - the train would circulate in Iberian and European gauge and under electric voltage on both sides of the border (25 thousand volts in Portugal and 3 thousand volts in Spain)
Renfe has even proposed a division of expenses and revenues (but mostly expenses because the service will be loss-making) on the Portuguese route
the daytime rail connection between Lisbon and Madrid took less time than it will take as of June 31: only eight hours with the direct Talgo "Luís de Camões" train

With all the European funds made available to Portugal is quite inconceivable mainland Portugal has so bad infrastructure and the people seem OK with it
When compared to Spain the disparity is abyssal
The practically non existant rail links between the major cities of lisboa
Madrid and Barcelona should be an embarrassment to both countries
High speed links would be good for the environment and the economy

Following a thorough refurbishment recently carried out at its central workshops in Entroncamento, Empresa de Manutenção de Equipamento Ferroviário, S.A. (EMEF) has delivered the first New Generation Alfa Pendular train to Comboios de Portugal (CP)
CP’s Alfa Pendular trains first entered service in 1999
and since then they have travelled over 41 million kilometres and carried around 26 million passengers
it underwent thorough refurbishment to improve passenger safety and comfort
with new seats and seat-cover materials and new lighting systems being fitted
a new Wi-Fi mobile communication system was installed
and individual electricity sockets were fitted to all seats
This refurbishment was carried out by about 80 EMEF workers and numerous specialised Portuguese service providers
with 90% of the project involving Portuguese technology and resources
“This project demonstrates EMEF’s ability to take its place as a lead company”
“This project demonstrates EMEF’s ability to take its place as a lead company that can incorporate the contributions of other sectors of Portuguese industry
and provide more robust and competitive all-round solutions for the Portuguese and international market,” said Alberto Castanho Ribeiro
Since then it has expanded both industrially and geographically
and now operates in the international market
The refurbishment work involved over 1500 procedures
ranging from complete disassembly of the train’s interior to painting with new colours to set the New Generation Alfa Pendular apart
The train’s 176 seats were also dismantled and rebuilt using new foam and new leather seat covers
and 44km of new wiring and 2,700kg of paint were used
All ten of CP’s Alfa Pendular trains will undergo this complete refurbishment (which is costing CP approximately €18 million)
and the next train is expected at EMEF this month

Adoption of the digital train approach can revolutionise train maintenance
Nomad Digital’s commercial director Jay Saw told the Golden Spanners conference
Mr Saw pointed out that the current budget for train maintenance in the UK is £2 billion
The McNulty report set a target to cut costs by 30%
and Mr Saw stated that significant savings can be achieved in maintenance through the use of ICT and operational technology to create a digital train
In comparison to the airlines and car industry
the rail industry has been slow to adopt this technology: Nomad believes that only 10% of trains across the world are truly connected
But while the Digital Railway programme has at last brought this thinking to bear
too many operators add digital systems in a piecemeal way and one-third of systems experts are expected to leave their company through retirement within 10 years
creating an impending brain drain on their legacy systems
fully connected train is to start by understanding what information you can get out of it – having a blueprint in mind at the outset is vital

is the 5th anniversary of CP - Comboios de Portugal reopening its Guifões workshops
Fifty carriages have been restored in the workshop complex since 2020
Putting this rolling stock back into service has boosted the supply of trains and meets the growing demand from passengers for sustainable travel
‘The reopening of the Guifões workshop at a time of great difficulty
had a special significance and gave CP the capacity to grow again
The results are there to see and make us all proud,’ said the CP's Chairman
praising the achievements of the workers over the last few years
‘With the rolling stock that has been recovered
we have been able to increase passenger transport capacity and provide a better service to our customers
modernising and putting rolling stock that was inoperable back into service
we wouldn't have been able to meet the huge increase in demand that has taken place over the last five years,’ he said
pointing out that the figures show an ever-increasing take-up of rail transport in Portugal: provisional figures for 2024 point to more than 185 million passengers being transported
12.8 million more than in the previous year
The investment to refurbish and re-equip the Guifões workshops was around €2.5 million and
this space has become fundamental to CP's activity
which run regular services on the Douro Line (and special services on the Beira Baixa Line); 14 Sorefame carriages
which also run regular services on the Douro Line; and 23 Arco carriages
which ensure inter-regional services on the Minho Line and run between Valença and Figueira da Foz
