COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 18, 2023) – U.S. men’s beach volleyball won a third straight international gold medal as Theo Brunner/Trevor Crabb took the title at the Pro Beach Tour Espinho Challenge on Sunday in Portugal.
Brunner/Crabb had to play in Thursday’s qualifier and won seven of eight matches at the tournament. In the final, they beat Austrians Alexander Horst and Julian Hörl 2-0 (21-16, 21-17). It was the third straight gold for U.S. men’s beach teams after Andy Benesh/Miles Partain won gold at the Elite 16 in Gstaad, Switzerland on July 9 and Evan Cory/Troy Field won the Helsinki Futures event on June 29.
It was the first international gold medal for Brunner/Crabb, who united as a team at the start of this season. Before Portugal, the pair finished fifth in challenge tournaments in La Paz, Mexico, Saquarema, Brazil, and Jurmala, Latvia, for their best results.
“It feels great,” Crabb told Volleyball World. “For both of us, it had been a while since we had last won an international medal, so we’re going to enjoy this one. It’s been awesome to play here in Espinho.”
Heading into the Espinho Challenge, Crabb had won three FIVB World Tour titles in 2018; two with John Mayer and one with Tri Bourne. Brunner had one international victory with Chaim Schalk at a 2021 FIVB World Tour two-star event in Rubavu, Rwanda.
“We’ve only been together for six months and we’ve been working so hard,” Brunner told Volleyball World. “We had a nice win last week in Hermosa Beach in similar conditions, with deep sand and some wind. We were a little bit nervous about the qualifier here in Espinho, but we made it through. We’re super happy, but also exhausted.”
Bourne/Schalk tied for fifth in Espinho. Taylor Crabb/Taylor Sander and Miles Evans/Chase Budinger tied for ninth. Evan Cory/Troy Field tied for 25th. Tim Brewster/Kyle Friend tied for 33rd.
On the women’s side, Megan Kraft/Emily Stockman tied for fifth. Julia Scoles/Betsi Flint tied for ninth. Savvy Simo/Toni Rodriguez and Zana Muno/Deahna Kraft tied for 25th. Brook Bauer/Katie Horton tied for 33rd.
Brunner/Crabb’s success in Espinho propelled them 20 spots up the men’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking and they are now in number 26, the highest they have ever been as a team.
The Espinho gold earned Brunner/Crabb 800 points toward a new total of 3,820 points, making them the second highest placed U.S. men’s duo, after 10th-ranked Benesh/Partain.
Brunner/Crabb are now the best-placed American duo in the men’s provisional Olympic ranking in 11th, surpassing previous leaders Schalk/Bourne, who are now 14th.
The top two teams U.S. teams in the provisional Olympic rankings as of June 10, 2024, provided they are in the top 17 overall, will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Among the women, Kelly Cheng/Sara Hughes are second in the Olympic rankings and Kristen Nuss/Taryn Kloth are fourth. Scoles/Flint are in 16th.
Eight U.S. women’s beach teams and six men’s teams are registered for the Edmonton Challenge event on July 20-23 in Canada.
USA Volleyball beach teams are bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals and more cowbells from the Pro Beach Tour Elite 16 event in Gstaad, Switzerland on July 9
USA Volleyball has selected age-group beach national to represent the United States at three different tournaments
As soon as the fireworks die down, consider pulling up VolleyballWorld.tv as qualifying at the Pro Beach Tour Elite 16 event in Gstaad, Switzerland begins at 11 p.m. PT on Tuesday night

Student interest in legal education has ballooned in recent years
the movement for racial justice and a hot job market
“All the events that we’ve had—the pandemic
the murder of George Floyd—everything has put a spotlight on why law matters,” said Kellye Testy
president and chief executive officer of the Law School Admission Council
“It’s galvanized in young people a desire to pursue justice and to find a way to contribute and to make a difference positively in the world
Law is always seen as a really good pathway for that.”
legal education sector is undergoing some of its biggest changes in years
Law schools are amending their curricula to include more work experience and consideration for student well-being
which administers the Law School Admission Test
is developing an undergraduate curriculum that could one day replace the test for some students
And a private university in Florida is planning to open its own law school—the first new one in eight years
Law schools received especially high numbers of applications in 2021
and volumes remain above historic levels this year
the number of law school applicants for the upcoming academic year was down 9.5 percent over last year
but it was still 8.3 percent higher than in 2020
Application numbers at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland
“We had a huge increase during the fall 2021 cycle
which was the most recent incoming class cycle … We had almost a 30 percent increase in applications in one year,” Huang said
“This year we’re seeing a little bit of a shrinking of that increase.”
a first-year law student at Lewis & Clark
She hopes to use her law degree to work on environmental justice
“The prospect of going to law school was in the back of my mind when I was in college and studying environmental science and filmmaking,” Komie said
I had time off from work and decided that was a good time to take the LSAT.”
this year’s first-year law class is the most diverse ever
More students of color are taking the LSAT
and those who do tend to earn higher scores—perhaps in part because the admission council has focused on making free test prep available for all students
The council has partnered with Khan Academy to offer LSAT preparatory courses at no cost and also offers free prep through Law Hub
Law schools have received 15.8 percent more applicants from Black and African American students for the upcoming academic year than they did in 2020
The number of Hispanic and Latino applicants has also increased
In an effort to further expand access to legal education
LSAC announced Wednesday it is working on a pilot program to create a prelaw curriculum for undergraduates that would effectively replace the LSAT for some students
would teach students the skills they would typically demonstrate on the LSAT
vice president for product development and business intelligence at LSAC
“It’s really important to us that law students can come from any undergraduate major; we don’t want them to have to focus on a specific area of study,” Griffith said
“The goal is to design the coursework and measurement tools to be complementary to the undergraduate work that the students are doing and not an additional burden for them.”
Northeastern University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will pilot the Legal Education Program
is especially excited about the academic and social support that the curriculum will provide to prelaw students
“Law school can be very challenging—it’s like learning a whole new language
Preparing students more formally while they’re undergraduates for law school will really help them succeed in law school more quickly,” Brand said
many law schools have begun taking student wellness more seriously in recent years
“Legal education is a high-pressure education
gotten better at keeping the rigor of the academics but pairing it with a real appreciation for student needs and student development,” Testy said
The quality of law education is also improving
More institutions have begun pairing legal education with work experience—such as in legal clinics—allowing students to practice what they’re learning in class while assisting people who need legal help
a second-year law student at Lewis & Clark
participated in a clinic for small businesses this past fall
providing business owners with legal services at no cost
“I had two clients that were local businesses
and that was a really rewarding experience,” Heldt said
“I was able to—with a mask on—physically go into the clinic and be with my peers and my supervisor who worked there.”
In addition to recent social and political events, a strong job market is driving students to pursue law. A recent report from the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity showed that of all advanced degrees
those in law and medicine offered the most lucrative returns
More than nine in 10 law programs offer graduates positive median returns
and a quarter yield a return on investment of more than $1 million
“Law firms and companies that have big internal legal departments—they can’t find enough lawyers right now,” Testy said
Jacksonville University in Florida plans to open up a new law school while demand is high
The university will welcome its first class next fall
senior vice president for economic development and external engagement at Jacksonville
The university was chartered to teach law when it was founded by a judge in 1930 but “never got around to that” until now
The city’s legal establishment welcomes the addition
“We found that not only did the market want us here in Jacksonville
the legal profession has been incredibly receptive,” Dee said
“As one of the largest cities in the country that didn’t have a law school
we were really missing an important element of what I would call the legal ecosystem that cities rely upon to serve the community.”
the new law school had received 126 applications for the few dozen openings
“We will always ultimately be on the smaller side of law schools,” Dee said
“We would be looking for class sizes of 100 to 125.”
there was a correction in terms of the volume of people applying and being admitted to law school
and so there was a downward trend” in enrollment
Dee and other university officials spoke with leaders at some of the law schools that shut down before deciding to open the new law school
“You have to have a revenue plan that doesn’t so heavily rely on your tuition revenue to sustain itself—you have to be the right size,” Dee said
“And you have to aim for high quality and high outcomes.”

Former Valour goalkeeper Matt Silva has returned to the Philippines to sign with United City FC after playing in Portugal with SC Espinho for the last five months
The 32-year-old has spent the last two seasons abroad following spending three years in Canada’s top flight
with the veteran shotstopper picking up a few trophies over the last couple years while featuring in continental competition
🧤 Check out the top 5️⃣ saves of #ACL2022 (East)!⤵️ Drop your favourite below pic.twitter.com/wzGg8xwKaZ
Silva won the Copa Paulino Alcantara during his first stint with United City FC in Philippines before picking up the Rock Cup while in Gibraltar
with his spells in both countries seeing him get minutes in both the AFC Champions League and the UEFA Conference League qualifiers
Flashback Interview: Silva Continues Journey Abroad In Gibraltar
His time with SC Espinho in Portugal’s lower tiers saw him depart as the club lies second in the the league table
though most minutes between the sticks were gobbled up by Portuguese competitors Miguel Borges and Bruno Silva
it seems Silva has opted to leave Portugal’s west coast behind as continues a career that has him journey across five countries and eleven clubs thus far
with United City FC stating that his return shows the club’s ambition to challenge for trophies this season
Silva’s time in the Canadian Premier League had seen him feature once for York United, where the former Osterlen FF first choice had been expecting to get significant minutes. A move to Valour followed, but he rode the bench behind an in-form James Pantemis for the pandemic-shortened Island Games season, and then the golden glove form of Jonathan Sirois the following year
he wasn’t getting the minutes or consistency that he needed at this stage of his career – a similar situation to SC Espinho
and I definitely needed to get myself out,” reflect the goalkeeper to us back in 2022
“The games I played in that last season with Valour
so it was definitely his spot until he lost it and I really didn’t do anything wrong to lose it
So that’s kind of how the battle played out.”
The Mississauga-born shotstopper will be seeking to get big minutes with United City
which marks his third stint in the Philippines
He’d spent a year previously with Kaya FC
winning the 2015 UFL Cup before travelling to Sweden to play for Bodens BK and
He isn’t the only CPL-related athlete to make a splash in regards to the Philippines today, with York United’s Matthew Baldisimo accepting a call-up from the Azkals
With United City FC stating that Silva is poised to make a ‘significant contribution’ in the team’s quest for success
we imagine the six-foot-one goalkeeper has been brought in as the club’s number one choice

the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games bound team had to grind and come from behind to defeat Americans Corinne Quiggle and Sarah Schermerhorn in the three-set (19-21
The victory in Espinho is the first for the Australians on the 2022 Beach Pro Tour

The Australians carried the good momentum into the third set and were quickly able to push ahead of their American opponents

Japan Beach Soccer National Team hold official practice at match venue Espinho Stadium – FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015
the Japan national team moved from the hotel they had stayed at to the designated hotel prepared by the tournament organiser
The team had had training for all the past four days but did not have it on the day and instead spent the time for removing fatigue to get prepared for the following day
As all the 16 participating teams stay at the same hotel and have meals in the same dining room
they will spend the tournament spell facing players and staff members from various nations every day
The following day on 7th started with everyone taking a walk around hotel and stretching at open space
the Japan squad held an official practice session for an hour at the match venue Espinho Stadium.
The first 30 minutes saw the players working on fundamentals such as passing and shooting drills to get used to the stadium atmosphere and the touch of pitch's sand
where they will actually play tournament matches
they had an intra-squad scrimmage to check up their tactics they had been working on in the past few days ahead of the opening match against Portugal
During the time frame when they did not have training
the squad had still image and video shooting session for the tournament use
Although such a session was unfamiliar to the players
The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015
is scheduled to be broadcast on Fuji TV NEXT and NEXT smart as the Japan national team matches air all live as well as semi-final and final matches of any matchup
TABATA Teruki (TOKYO LEQUIOS BS)We had an official practice session today at the Espinho Stadium
and I felt again the World Cup is now opening
but we are getting used to it and able to play without caring it because it's been a while since we started our training in Portugal.
The mood in the team is good and we had good passing moves in today's intra-squad game
We will do what we have done and take advantage of it in an actual match
Tomorrow we have the final training session before the opener
We will review each player's moves and go out for the match on 9th
MAKINO Shinji (LEON FUKUOKA)With the official practice at the stadium
I became more aware of the World Cup finally beginning
there is nothing we can change dramatically
The place where we show off the completion of our work with head coach Marcelo is here the World Cup
Because for some players this is their first World Cup
I will give enough support as a veteran to let them play in a comfortable manner.
I want to put up the best result ever and go back to Japan
we need to brace ourselves up in tomorrow's training and make a good preparation for the important opening match

Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt is known to be an admirer of the player's talents after he became one of his favourites at the Clever Boys during his half-season loan spell.
However, Hunt's hands are tied in the transfer market as the Soweto giants are still operating under a two-window FIFA transfer ban, meaning they cannot register any players.
Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung is still awaiting the outcome of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport before he can make any moves for new players.

South African youngster Nakedi Chipu has signed a professional contract with SC Espinho in Portugal. Chipu came through the youth ranks of Polokwane United Academy in Thohoyandou
having initially joined the side for their U14 team
The 21-year-old has been offered a professional contract
after he impressed the club during his time there last year
"We are proud to announce that Nakedi Chipu (21) has signed his first professional contract with SC Espinho in Portugal
Nakedi joined Polokwane United Academy when the club was based in Thohoyandou during the 2013-14 season as an U14," confirmed Polokwane United Academy in their statement.
"He progressed all the way through the club structures until making the move to Portugal last year after a very good season in the ABC Motsepe League
Despite suffering an injury which kept him out for four months
he was still voted in the Sonic Team of the season 2018-19
Nakedi is one of the most gifted players to come from our development and we wish him all the best
He is also the second player to sign in Europe after Kgaogelo Sekgota (now on loan at Bidvest Wits from Vitória Setubal) signed with FC Stumbras in March 2017," the club confirmed.
