All previous years the championship had featured either 8, 10 or 12 participants. Estoril was one of the fourteen, and in the first match, played away at Boavista, they were beaten 2-1. Nobody expected them to actually compete, so when Benfica was set to visit the ground at Amoreiras many Eagles’ supporters assumed two points were in the bag Benfica had been runners-up to Belenenses in the surprise triumph of the club from Belém the season before – the only club outside the Big Three to win the championship in the 20th century – and they were expected to go full force to recapture the league the side that travelled to Estoril that sunny but cold early December afternoon included many of the great players of the decade in Portuguese football The likes of Arsénio and Rogério Pipi up front the first black-skinned football star in Portuguese football Figueiredo was keen to get even and what better opportunity than their first duel back in the top tier the inside forward José Mota netted the first into Orlando’s goal Miguel Lourenço scored a second ten minutes later but Arsénio then put one past Sebastião da Silva to halve the deficit and when the referee blew for half time the home team were 3-1 up The local supporters were ecstatic but many suspected that Benfica would come out even stronger after the break to turn events around Few believed how the match would eventually unfold particularly when Rogério Pipi who had become Benfica’s first footballer who played abroad The Eagles launched themselves into an all-out attack approach and that allowed Estoril to bide their time and play on the counter Lima scored Estoril’s fourth and Mota added a fifth before Benfica’s captain Francisco Ferreira netted Benfica’s third from the penalty spot. The 5-3 scoreline was already a crazy result, even by the high-scoring standards of the day, especially as it was Benfica who were on the losing side but then Mota completed his hat-trick with a long-range shot past Orlando with just a couple of minutes left on the clock Estoril had beaten the side most favoured to clinch the league title and had done it in style to score six goals against the mighty Lisbon juggernaut Estoril score goal number four as Benfica are put to the sword at Amoreira and the result of the Canarinhos when contrasted with the defeat against Boavista raised some doubts about which version of the club supporters would get throughout the season taking into consideration that the only time they had played first division football things had ended poorly with the side being relegated Estoril finished the season in a brilliant 5th with the same points in the league table as both the 3rd and 4th-placed sides All three sides had 33 points to their name and Estoril even enjoyed the best goal difference mainly thanks to their brilliant attacking line who netted 96 goals in all matches But since they weren’t able to beat either opponent in their head-to-head duels The following season they would go one better ending the season in fourth place before finishing fifth the year after It was a memorable period in the club’s history one in which the lack of television or continental trophies has diminished their achievements but that should rank alongside other golden ages for similar-sized sides In 1948/49 season Estoril provided no fewer than four players (Vieira Alberto and Sebastião) to Portugal's national team (Photo: estorilpraia.pt) Estoril Praia had to wait more than sixty years, for the 2012/13 season, with Marco Silva in charge, to enjoy such heights again. Benfica would suffer after their surprise defeat at Amoreiras and were never really able to put up a title challenge against their bitter rivals Sporting who began a cycle of three consecutive league titles It was the first league win for what became known as the Cinco Violinos forward line José Travassos and the mighty Fernando Peyroteo Kelly would then leave Sporting and it was Cândido de Oliveira the man arrested after becoming a spy at the service of the MI5 who had been working as sporting director to support the British coach Sporting did one better and claimed four in a row between 1950 and 1954 but They would have to wait until 1975 to climb back to the first tier at a time when the squad included a certain Fernando Santos who would both play for and manage Estoril and indelibly write his name in the annuls of Portuguese football Notizie CorrelateBenfica overcome Estoril challenge to keep up title charge Agent of Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras dismisses wild Man United transfer rumour as “pure fantasy” CAS Confirms: Inter Milan Don’t Owe Sporting CP €30M Compensation For Portugal Star’s Controversial Transfer To Benfica Benfica manager confirms Real Madrid & Atletico Madrid want left-back Benfica boss confirms transfer interest from Real & Atlético Madrid 😱Inter-Barça, i numeri che fanno TREMARE entrambe: ecco le armi segrete!📊 Dopo il grande spettacolo dell’andata, questa sera va in scena il capitolo decisivo della semifinale tra Inter e Barcellona. the latest news about the Argentina National Football team in English Benfica beat Estoril 2-1 tonight to go three points clear of Sporting at the top the table before their title rivals play tomorrow The Eagles looked set for a straightforward victory after going into the break two-nil up thanks to goals from Fredrik Aursnes and captain Nicolás Otamendi Estoril came out fighting in the second half The hosts missed a glorious chance to halve the deficit when Yanis Begrauoui’s penalty was saved by Anatoliy Trubin but the home team did score in the 78th minute through a Vinícius Zanocelo header to set up a nervy ending for Benfica and will go into next weekend’s crunch derby against Sporting – the penultimate game of the season – at worst level on points with their Lisbon neighbours Tom Kundert & Sahir Bhojwani report from the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota.  but that was as good as it got for the home team in the opening 45 minutes Play switched to the other end of the pitch and Fredrik Aursnes was denied by Estoril goalkeeper Joel Robles when clean through The Norwegian made no mistake with a similar chance soon afterwards as he converted Orkun Kökçü’s pass to give Benfica the lead in the 7th minute to finish off a flowing move involving Otamendi Benfica were in control with the omnipresent Florentino Luís effectively cutting out Estoril’s attempts to create danger Benfica’s lead was doubled on 35 minutes when captain Nicolás Otamendi headed in a well delivered free kick by Samuel Dahl Benfica were clearly conserving energy with next week’s Lisbon derby no doubt on the minds of the players and coaching staff but Trubin had been little more than a spectator until midway through the second half Moroccan striker Yanis Begraoui was brought down by Otamendi on the edge of the box and the referee immediately whistled for a penalty but his poorly hit spot kick was saved by Trubin with Vinícius Zanocelo smashing the rebound onto the bar from point-blank range The Brazilian midfielder sank to his knees but he made up for it in the 78th minute when he leapt impressively to head Rafik Guitane’s cross past Trubin and make the score 2-1 The Estoril goal was the culmination of a period of pressure from the home team Alejandro Marqués and Rafik Guitane all providing zest and energy for the Canarinhos Benfica’s players and especially their coaching staff were getting increasingly nervous (assistant coach Ricardo Rocha receiving a red card for overzealous protests) as Estoril strung some neat moves together albeit without managing to fashion a clear chance including the eight minutes of stoppage time with solid defending to make it 12 wins in 13 games in the Primeira Liga Fredrik Aursnes’ best position has been debated by pundits across the nation but one aspect of his game that cannot be questioned is his tireless work rate The versatile utility man was used predominantly on the right side of the midfield but was spotted covering every corner of the pitch The Norwegian was outstanding on the night He aided his defence when required and his cutting runs caused problems for Estoril’s back three throughout the match He was rewarded for his hard work with a well worked goal in the first half that set Benfica on their way The atmosphere was electric at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota The Benfiquistas brought with them a vocal and passionate group and Estoril’s supporters matched them every step on the way and with plenty of supporters packing into the ground (and some watching from the adjacent high-rise buildings) this had to be one of the best atmospheres at Estroil this season Ian Cathro has elevated Estoril into the top half of the table with an exciting brand of attacking football The Scottish manager has to be applauded for his bold tactics but his approach can sometimes leave his defence susceptible on the counter This turned out to be one of those occasions with Benfica opening up Estoril’s defence and breaking through with a well worked goal in the 7th minute having already sliced through the home team’s back line with alarming ease With time winding down and Benfica holding on to a slender 2-1 lead Bruno Lage turned to his bench and once again called on Belotti at a critical stage of the game The decision would have been a major blow for Arthur Cabral There were high expectations for Cabral when the Eagles brought him in as a replacement for Gonçalo Ramos in 2023 The club shelled out an exorbitant fee in excess of 20 million euros to sign him from Fiorentina but he has gradually drifted into oblivion this season Cabral has started just two league games and managed just two league goals With Pavlidis and Belotti firmly established as the No it will be interesting to see what role Senna's famous Estoril triumph plus Elio de Angelis’ second and final F1 win at Imola and Senna’s second at Spa is retained by Classic Team Lotus in the private works Lotus collection Senna drove nearly 3000 miles in chassis 2 during the season He used it in qualifying to secure pole position in Portugal said that Senna’s first F1 win had been “a great moment for him “So much so that in his own words Ayrton considered Estoril to be his greatest race,” added Chapman “Together with Peter Warr and Fred Bushell my mother Hazel had kept Team Lotus going and Estoril was the first win since Colin died it has been our privilege to maintain the car in running condition Bruno driving at Estoril 40 years to the day is bound to be emotional and we are looking forward to sharing this with a global audience.” Classic Team Lotus Team Manager and a former lead mechanic for Senna in his Lotus days will be at Estoril to run the car as he did back in 1985 will also be visiting Estoril with the 97T for the first time “In 1985 everyone at Team Lotus was pulling together to get back to winning ways,” recalls Dinnage upon recalling the first Lotus win since the death of Colin Chapman in December 1982 “With all the excitement and anticipation of getting Ayrton to join Team Lotus this victory was a huge boost to us all After the disappointing fuel pump failure in the first race of the season in Rio the Estoril win was just what we needed to lift the team up to a real high “You could see that from how the team went crazy both on the track and in parc ferme We started to believe we had a realistic chance of the championship.” Senna eventually finished that season fourth in the final standings behind Alain Prost Michele Alboreto and Keke Rosberg but dominated the qualifying statistics - taking seven poles from the 16 races powered by a 1.5-litre Renault Turbo V6 producing around 1000 horsepower was arguably one of the most elegant and deliciously liveried F1 cars of its era The car weighed 585kg and created around 1000kg of downforce at 150mph While Senna announced himself to the F1 world with Toleman in 1984 it was really his second season when he switched to Lotus that his true potential was realised in the Gerard Ducarouge and Martin Ogilvie penned car brakes and gearshift and no power steering Senna demonstrated his phenomenal speed instantly Powering the car was Renault’s EF15 units that had a 1494 capacity and 7:1 compression ratio  and a maximum power output of 810bhp Renault used twin-turbo Garrett derived turbochargers and a Marelli ignition system Looking forward to the anniversary occasion at Estoril next month said: “Driving the 97T chassis 2 in Estoril to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ayrton’s first F1 victory will be a very emotional moment for me “It’s always a huge privilege to be able to drive and experience Ayrton’s cars but some of them have defined his career and hold a special place in mine and my family’s hearts “Estoril is a historic circuit that held a lot of its original character as well so it will bring back very special memories especially with my friends at Classic Team Lotus running the car.” Despite the immense popularity of the 1993 European Grand Prix at Donington Park there is a very credible argument for Estoril ’85 being Senna's finest F1 win In conditions that wouldn’t allow racing today Senna utterly crushed the opposition from the very first yards of the race and was never headed indeed he never looked like being challenged Senna went into Estoril with no points on the board after his Lotus debut had ended with a fuel system issue Long forgotten is the fact that heading into Estoril with the cars having been air freighted to Portugal the issues hadn’t cleared completely and he had actually started preparing the spare 97T in readiness for a change of mount But the T-car suffered a clutch issue so he was forced to preserve with the car he’d retired with at Rio just a fortnight before the issue was found to be a blocked and short-circuited electric pump With renewed confidence Senna topped first qualifying from team-mate de Angelis and then took a further 0.6s off again in the second session to secure his first ever F1 pole position The famously foul weather at Estoril that day actually didn’t arrive until just before the start That appears to have put the locals off and it seems incredible that a crowd of just 11,000 were there to witness one of F1’s most noteworthy days From the start Senna took off and quickly got into a rhythm steadily pulling away from de Angelis Senna was revelling in the conditions and started to experiment with wet weather lines finding grip where others simply dared not go His only threats appeared to come from either his own confidence or others Mauro Baldi spun his lairy Spirit in front of the alarmed leader but Senna had it all covered well in advance Even a brief grassy excursion at mid-distance was the only other alarm bell as the 67 lap race tipped just over the two hour mark While a dozen other drivers threw it at the scenery Senna took the chequered flag a staggering one minute and two seconds ahead of eventual second place finisher Alboreto of Ferrari the only driver not to be lapped by the serene Lotus Patrick Tambay’s Renault completed the podium to make it a Renault powered 1-3 As Senna crossed the finish line he popped his belts almost immediately raised himself from the cockpit and pointed in joy to the leaden sky It was if he was thanking the Lord himself for conditions which Please accept marketing cookies to enable YouTube videos Here you can see the webcast of the BMW Group Press Conference at the Auto Shanghai 2025 © 2024, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. World Championship head south to the iconic Estoril circuit on Portugal’s beautiful Atlantic coast just twenty-five kilometres west of the capital city Lisbon this coming weekend (26-27 April) for round two Following a dramatic opening round at Le Mans in France the Swiss/German pairing of Markus Schlosser (Yamaha) and passenger Luca Schmidt hold the early advantage after finishing a close second in the eleven-lap Sprint race behind defending champions Harrison Payne (Yamaha) from Britain and his French passenger Kevin Rousseau before running away with race two the joy of their Sprint race victory was replaced with disappointment the following day when a mechanical issue forced them out on the opening lap of race two with the resulting no-score dropping them down the points table to fourth Consistency is key to winning any FIM World Championship title and British brothers Sam and Thomas Christie (Yamaha) were a constant presence at the Circuit Bugatti where a pair of third-placed finishes were good enough for second overall thirteen points behind Schlosser and Schmidt and six clear of the British/French partnership of Todd Ellis (Yamaha) and Emmanuelle Clement PROVISIONAL ENTRY LIST HERELIVE TIMING ESTORIL HERE Ellis and Clement also demonstrated the importance of remaining consistent and after backing up a fourth in the Sprint race with fourth in race two they head to Portugal holding third in the standings a single point clear of Payne/Rousseau with Britain’s Tim Reeves (Yamaha) and Mark Wilkes fifth on twenty-two points after recording two fifth places in France between them the leading five crews hold fourteen coveted FIM gold medals but there is another former champion in the mix who finds himself playing an early game of catch-up after suffering mixed fortunes at the opening round Finland’s Pekka Päivärinta (Yamaha) – who is racing with Britain’s Adam Christie in the sidecar for the second successive season – has won five FIM Sidecar Rider World Championship titles though his years of hard-earned experience counted for nothing when he span at the start of the Sprint race before getting caught up with British brothers Sam and Jack Laidlow (Yamaha) in an incident that left both crews sidelined Päivärinta and Christie fought back fiercely the following day and a last-lap pass on Christie and Christie in the second race that was reduced from eighteen to twelve laps was good enough for second position and twenty points although their DNF on the first lap of the opening race of the campaign could prove to be expensive when the seven-round series moves into the closing stages While the formbook is likely to be rewritten multiple times over the course of the season that runs until early October other teams showing promising early pace include the German/French crew of Patrick Werktetter (Yamaha) and Valentin Pirat who threatened the top-five in both races while the Laidlow brothers should also not be discounted After feverishly working late into the night to repair damage to their outfit following the Sprint race the pair raced to sixth in Saturday’s race to get a solid score on the board. The points-scoring action will get under way at Estoril at 11:20 (local time) on Sunday 27 April with the ten-lap Sprint race followed by the seventeen-lap Main race at 16:00 (local time) After the implementation of the guess I can’t complain considering where we have been at I think every time you achieve something you think you’re going to be satisfied but the reality is you get that much closer to that next goal and that’s kinda where I had my eyes focused,” he said It was a shame because we could have been fighting closer to the top five a top 10 is something to be happy about considering the disaster of a season we have endured at times American Kristian Daniel Jr was the highest AGR finisher in the European Talent Cup division in P13 “I got into the 46’s in terms of lap times which really was my goal My fastest time prior to this was a 47.8 so I went 1.1 seconds faster so I’m happy about that,” he said it was just a regular start so it wasn’t enough even though I knew I had the pace to be up there battling It’s bittersweet but still a good way to end the season with my team.” The complete AGR Team press release follows: New Zealand racer Cormac Buchanan delivered AGR a third podium of the season at the FIM JuniorGP World Championship at Estoril who will move up to the Moto3 World Championship in 2025 demonstrated his progression in the sport in his last outing in the junior ranks to secure second in the opening race Buchanan punched out of the final corner and dominated the fight to the finish line missing the win by just 0.048 seconds to Guido Pini “I’m really happy with today – it feels like I saved my best JuniorGP races until the very end It was a such a nice way to sign off with AGR and reward them for the last three years and the massive part they have played in my development as a racer They have made me who I am and I feel ready to fight it out in the world championship,” he said It almost felt like I was riding around knowing I had the race under control when I was sixth going into the last corner Thankfully it was enough to cross the line in second and so close to my first win.” Buchanan was again in the mix throughout race two leading in stages and never more than a second from the front but was forced to settle for seventh across the line He was then demoted one place for breaching track limits “It was another good race and I felt really calm I kept getting sucked into the slipstream under braking and it meant I had to do a lot of work to recover In the end we just ran out of laps and I got punted wide in the last lap and got demoted for that which is unfortunate.” A strong points haul in the final round boosted him up the championship ranks to 5th equal overall “That track limits proved especially costly in the end but fifth in the world is an incredible result for this season We were in the hunt for top three overall right until that last lap,” he said narrowly missed out on points in race one with P17 but was unsatisfied with his efforts in the second race “The first went well – I had a bad start but managed to get some places back,” he said “We chose the softer tyre compound for the second race and that did not go to plan it was not the best but also not the worst We will continue to work hard and prepare for a full championship season in 2025.” snatching his first point with a P15 result – despite dropping 13 positions earlier in the race “It was my first ETC race so I fell back a lot to 27 It was kind of a difficult race because I had to push a lot to climb back but I got up to P15 again,” he said “It was a good start to my career here and I want more so let’s see what I can achieve next year.” Portugal’s Alfonso Almeida earned his place in the main race with an epic P2 finish in the last chance event earlier in the day He then executed a credible race to claim P23 “Three of us escaped from the other riders and on the last lap I was able to move into P2 and achieve my goal of racing again today,” he said I am happy for all the work my team and I have put in to achieve my evolution this season Next year we will make another step.”  from a press release issued by the FIM JuniorGP World Championship: Championships decided as Carpe takes FIM JuniorGP™ crown on dramatic final day A Wednesday to remember in JuniorGP™ as major drama made for some of the most remarkable stand-offs of the season The 2024 FIM JuniorGP™ World Championship has come to an end with new race winners and Champions all in the same day Guido Pini (Seventy Two ARTBOX Racing Team) and Maximo Quiles (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) won races but it was Alvaro Carpe (STV Laglisse Racing) who took the crown victory was all for Unai Orradre (STV Laglisse Racing) who was victorios but Roberto Garcia (Fantic Cardoso Racing) lifted the title trophy with fifth The European Talent Cup was its usual unpredictable self but a first win went to Argentinean Valentin Perrone (Frando Racing VHC Team) whilst in the Stock™ European Championship Dino Iozzo (IUM Motorsports) won his first race of his career but the title A thrilling Race 1 erupted into life in true JuniorGP™ fashion as Carpe went for gold from the start He was soon enraged in a battle with the likes of Adrian Cruces (Finetwork Team) and Guido Pini his teammate Brian Uriarte and Cormac Buchanan (AGR Team) Maximo Quiles’ quest for a first race win in the class was halted early on as he fell at Turn 4 after contact with hard-charging Jesus Rios (MRE Talent) originally set to start from P7 but in the end had to start from the back of the grid due to slow riding in qualifying Rios was in the top five when disaster struck title favourite Carpe who crashed with Casey O’Gorman (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) at Turn 12 with just six laps to go; the Championship now not in his hands Rios was a race leader two laps later but peaked too soon as Pini came back through Rios – placed second – tried to ride round Pini but the Italian held firm and a tiny bit of contact disrupted Rios’ run shuffling the Spaniard back down the field in seventh Pini won his third race of the year ahead of Buchanan and Marcos Uriarte (CFMOTO Aspar Junior Team) but Carpe despite not crossing the line and crashing out was crowned Champion with joyous scenes in the box Race 2 was a slightly calmer affair to begin with as everything now hinged on who was going to take P2 overall in the standings The usual suspects were at the front with added spice from Uruguayan star Facundo Llambias who was a race leader in the closing stages Going to on the final lap and Quiles had battled his way to the front Pini having his say and 18-year-old Austrian Jakob Rosenthaler (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP Junior Team) looking for a first podium in over a year and a half Quiles grabbed victory – his first in the class – with Pini taking P2 and Rosenthaler third Newly-crowned Champion Carpe strutted home in sixth with a special gold livery to round out a special season of racing it was also the Championship-crowning day as Roberto Garcia (Fantic Cardoso Racing) needed just a top ten to secure the title he made a good launch but was soon pegged back and returned to his original starting position Up front and a big battle was brewing between long-time race leader Alberto Surra (Team Ciatti-Boscoscuro) and Unai Orradre (STV Laglisse Racing) pounced in the second half of the race and Surra didn’t have an answer despite a late error from the race-leading #10 Mattia Casadei (Team Ciatti-Boscoscuro) was Garcia’s main title rival but unable to get on terms with the race leaders With the podium set in that order at the chequered flag who rode a calm and solid race to take a first Championship crown With four wins to his name and a total of six podiums Moving onto the already-decided European Talent Cup title fight Carlos Cano (Seventy Two ARTBOX Racing Team) was looking at becoming the first-ever ETC rider to secure seven wins in a season but he’d have to fight hard the race was dominated by Giulio Pugliese (CFMOTO Aspar Junior Team) and Mallorcan star Fernando Bujosa (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) but he’d soon drop down field with a mechanical issue things heated up in the closing stages as Valentin Perrone pole-sitter David Gonzalez (AC Racing Team) Beñat Fernandez (Frando Racing VHC Team) and Marco Morelli (MLav Racing) battled hard Perrone held on to become the fourth different winner of the season whilst Pugliese secured third in the title race with P2 and Gonzalez salvaged third took P6 in the race whilst Morelli’s P5 was enough for second in the standings A belting Stock™ ECh race got underway with a second pole of the season being converted into a holeshot for Dino Iozzo before a red flag came out for an incident involving Rodrigo Valente (PS Racing) Eric Molina (Fifty Motorsport) and Cristian D’Arliano (Pinamoto RS) The medical team were on-site immediately and all riders reported to be conscious before being transported away Iozzo once again got a bright start but fellow front row starter Archie McDonald (MRE Talent) briefly led before the two swapped back by the end of the opening lap A huge battle for the title was shaping up though as Mario Mayor (GV Tamoil Racing) and teammate Lorenzo Dalla Porta scrapped relentlessly for P3 In what was one of the best battles of the racing year they both swapped places more than ten times and even rubbed wheels into Turn 6 Dalla Porta won the battle for P3 but it wasn’t enough to take the title from teammate and good friend Mayor Iozzo won his last race in the class with a fairytale farewell The #48 of Dalla Porta was on the rostrum but the big celebrations were for his Championship-winning teammate Mayor Demis Mihaila (MDR Competicion) was in contention on-track until a mechanical at Turn 12 ruled him out Six different winners in the Stock™ European Championship’s second year a fine way to conclude the 2024 FIM JuniorGP™ World Championship season For all the results from the past, present and future and more news regarding the Championship, www.fimjuniorgp.com | The commemorative run is part of a wider celebration uniting two key anniversaries: the 75th year of the Formula 1 World Championship and the legacy of Team Lotus whose pioneering spirit helped define the sport’s golden eras Senna’s drive at Estoril remains one of Formula 1’s most revered performances the Brazilian lapped all but one of his rivals to claim the first of his 41 Grand Prix wins Senna himself ranked it above his lauded 1993 Donington drive It was a good win but compared with Estoril ’85 it was nothing.” was a technical landmark—most notably for being the first F1 car to feature vertical aerodynamic elements behind the front wheels a precursor to modern bargeboards that remain integral to today’s cars Bruno Senna will take the 97T back to Estoril for its first lap at the circuit since Ayrton’s triumph closing a historic circle in Formula 1 lore He said: “It will be an incredible feeling to drive this iconic car marking the beginning of a series of victories and achievements by my uncle.” Bruno continued: “This celebration will bring together fans from all over the world and shows how Ayrton Senna remains a powerful name in motorsport and a positive influence on society in many ways – from educational impact to sustainable innovation and as a movement that continues to inspire generations to pursue their dream and never give up.” Son of founder Colin Chapman Managing Director of Classic Team Lotus reflected on Senna’s lasting influence: “For Team Lotus technical understanding and relentless drive helped push the team forward.” “This anniversary allows us to relive that magic and honour his legacy Bruno Senna’s commemorative drive at Estoril promises to be an emotional and historic moment bringing the past full circle and cementing Senna’s enduring impact on motorsport,” concluded Chapman the Lotus 97T will take to the track at the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting on 12–13 April The car will also feature later in the year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July The Duke of Richmond CBE DL said: “Goodwood has always celebrated motorsport’s greatest icons and it’s an honour to host the Lotus 97T ahead of its return to Estoril Seeing the legendary car on track once again will be a fitting tribute to Ayrton Senna’s legacy and a special moment for fans who can see the car in action again at the Festival of Speed in July.” Lotus will share the commemorative event widely through interviews, social media coverage, and a filmed segment of the Estoril lap to be broadcast by Sky F1 and other media outlets This being Senna, that maiden win was a complete demolition job in which the then 25-year-old danced around the soaking wet track as so many others – among them Alain Prost, Keke Rosberg, Gerhard Berger, Riccardo Patrese – fell off one by one. By the time the race was halted at the two-hour limit (three laps shy of the full distance), Senna had lapped everyone except Ferrari’s Michele Alboreto… who was more than a minute behind. Regardless of era, that is insane. And when asked years later if Donington 1993 was his best win (remember him climbing from fifth to first on the opening lap?) apparently Ayrton replied: “No way! I had traction control there. It was a good win but compared with Estoril ‘85 it was nothing.” So, to the here and now. That very car will be doing a demo run at Estoril later this month, piloted by Ayrton’s nephew Bruno. Yep, he of brief F1 circus membership in the early 2010s. That ought to be quite a sight, and powered by 1.5-litre V6 turbo, a visceral aural experience as well. In a weird way, we kinda hope the weather is atrocious. For max nostalgia, of course. “It will be an incredible feeling to drive this iconic car, marking the beginning of a series of victories and achievements by my uncle,” said Bruno. “This celebration will bring together fans from all over the world and shows how Ayrton Senna remains a powerful name in motorsport, and a positive influence on society in many ways - from educational impact to sustainable innovation, and as a movement that continues to inspire generations to pursue their dream and never give up." Genuinely, why doesn’t F1 take a leaf out of Goodwood Revival’s book? One historic circuit each year, roll out the McLaren MP4/4, Brabham BT46, Williams FW14B and Ferrari F2004, and just let the current grid have at it? That’d be way better than F175, and the drivers would have loads more fun too. Just a thought… Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. fired a low drive past Joel Robles ten minutes later The match took a turn three minutes after half-time when Tomás Araújo connected with Fabrício Garcia who went down in the box Referee António Nobre awarded a penalty before being summoned to the touchline monitor by the VAR there was only going be one outcome which saw Nobre overturn his own decision Zeki Amdouni came off the bench and gave the Eagles some breathing room in the 73rd minute sweeping home after a botched clearance from Pedro Álvaro The Swiss striker scored again in added time heading home Jan-Niklas Beste's corner at the back
