If you want a sports car with rear seats that isn’t a Porsche 911
Most two-plus-two coupes are more focused on grand touring
meaning you’ll be able to take the kids or the dog with you
but it won’t carve corners quite like you might wish
and it might share an engine with your daily driver
This handmade sports car with optimistic rear seats is a bit of a sleeper
because its simultaneously amazing yet often forgotten
the stereo is sourced from an aftermarket supplier
but with telepathic handling and just enough practicality to use everyday
you can now buy one for the price of a new Toyota GR Corolla
iconic British sports car brand Lotus hatched a plan to broaden its appeal
The featherweight Elise and its hardcore Exige brother were fantastic
The idea was a new model offensive to try and steal sales from major competitors
with a larger footprint than any other Lotus of the time
and the usability to go after the Porsche 911
a tenth quicker than the GR Corolla but without the hideously abusive redline clutch-dump launch
Grip from the Pirelli P Zero rubber feels endless
this one is perfectly untroubled by high-speed turns
from the natural pedal feel to the 151-foot stops from 70 mph
is on par with that of the best sports cars in the world
But it’s the Evora’s precise and communicative steering that distinguishes the driving experience
As cornering loads build on the front tires
the steering effort through the hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion steering increases—it feels spring-loaded
When the front tires begin to relinquish grip
the steering releases as though the spring has been wound too far
by abruptly lifting off the throttle or hammering it
and the Lotus will delicately and slowly drift its rear tires outward
A polished and slick skidpad surface resulted in a so-so 0.92 g; we fully expect the Evora to get closer to 1 g at our usual test venue
joyous sports car handling isn’t shocking
here was a Lotus you could actually grand tour in without risking your hearing or your back
and a rock-solid powertrain shared with just about every Toyota under the sun
you can now buy an Evora for GR Corolla money
For 2025, a mid-range GR Corolla Premium stickers for $42,575 including freight before you add an extra sub-radiator or an actual color. Can you find a Lotus Evora for that money? Sure. Just check out this Solar Yellow 2010 model that sold on Bring A Trailer for $41,500
it looks like a whole lot of fun for new hot hatch money
Then again, not everyone likes the attention of driving a Skittle. How about a more demure spec? This black 2010 Evora sold on Cars & Bids for a mere $36,200
although part of that bargain’s due to modifications
and InoKinetic short shifter mean this thing’s ready to rip
it hasn’t exactly been to the moon and back
Oh, and if you’re not one to wait around for an auction, options do exist in the used car classifieds. This red 2011 Evora is up for sale in Colorado for $38,500
and although it does have 81,000 miles on the clock
it already sports an upgraded clutch and supporting hardware
you know that the Lotus Evora is handmade in England
That’s normally not a fantastic sign
but most common failure points are fairly minor
There’s a drain tube for the air conditioning up on the front bulkhead that can get blocked and lead to water in the footwells
but the fix is basically free if you can wrench
Owners report simply pulling the undertrays and removing the filter on the end of the tube cures the problem
reports of trim and panel alignment issues can be fixed at home
it seems like common Evora issues are largely isolated to body equipment
with the powertrains appearing remarkably robust
Just remember to budget for the inevitable clutch replacement because it’s an incredibly involved process calling for 35 hours of labor
A good independent shop will be your best friend here
it probably won’t be as reliable as a GR Corolla
but the Evora doesn’t have any truly ruinous issues
and it’s an absolutely fantastic mid-engined sports car
Think of it as a spiritual cousin to the MR2
except it already comes with the engine people want to swap into SW20s
and sleep soundly knowing the bones are rock-solid

but I haven’t driven it in a while because the clutch is slipping
but it is not magical the way the Evora is
the question is: will this Evora depreciate at the same rate as GR Corolla
Realizing that my mom has 276hp in her 2 ton van is somehow scary
The only real contention to NOT buy an Evora is… a Cayman S
air conditioning compressors are known to fail on occasion
that part’s shared with a late-aughts Toyota RAV4
so although you’ll be looking at about $1,500 at an independent shop
just get a new one for under $300 on Rock Auto
I can’t believe how insane labor costs are getting lately
I just redid the Rotors and pads on my Ford Fiesta
Cost me $140 in parts and about an hour of my day
The cheapest option I could find someone to do it for me
I test drove an Evora in a beautiful pearl white a few years ago
I’m fortunate in that I do have a sports car l love now
but I have to admit the Evora will always haunt me
Take my advice: if you’re trying to decide whether to buy the car
If it’s used and it’s a good deal your risk is fairly low unless the engine just grenades
every time i reach the end zone the goal post moves 30 yards away
Being a millennial is like running on a tread mill and the faster you run the faster the belt spins and you never go anywhere
I started trying to put my r53 back together two years ago
and prices have rocketed up to make it almost unreachable
my only saving grace is that my wife wants it done and out of her driveway almost as bad as I want it back on the road
r53 is simply easier to type on a cell phone than spelling out MINI Cooper S each time
and has become a habit while searching for parts for the car
some of us grew up in households with creative writing teachers for parents so being overly verbose is an unfotunate side effect of that upbringing
and results in far too frequent apologies on our parts
help when I have to write reports to the board of pardons and parole
Mimi Cooper S with the supercharged engine
All the extra info is irrelevant in this context
If you were asking a witness to describe the getaway car and they said it was an XY89 you wouldn’t know what that is
But if they say what kind of car it is you do know
the prospect of being pulled over by a cop in a mini cooper is giving me the giggles
I’d love to be able to take it out to go run code(it’s even blue)
but instead I have to do that in an old dodge caravan
Being a parole officer rather than a regular street officer kind of sets some limits on what I can do
when I was a kid up in Washington the LaConner police department used to pull people over in pea green Renault Le Car’s
For the longest time one of the old patrol cars sat under a carport next to highway 20 between LaConner and Mount Vernon after it had been retired
My dad pointed it out regularly when we would drive by
The Evora has been my dream car ever since it came out
Last year I was finally daily driver sports car shopping and I looked at them quite a bit but they are still just a bit out of budget
which means they likely won’t ever be in budget cause they cleave to be approaching the bottom of their depreciation curve
I could have stretched the budget but would have been in an uncomfortable situation and not willing to put the family or myself in that spot
I always liked these since I first saw one at the LA car show years ago… even new
they started at about $70K or something originally
not quite out of the realm of possibility for regular enthusiasts
The back seat is tiny (as it is on 911s) but I’d never put anyone back there so
be fairly livable in day to day use (if your back is in good shape which mine is definitely not)
and (IMO) it having a Toyota engine is a plus
the fact that they haven’t depreciated MORE than just to the upper $30Ks is probably due to their inherent goodness and longevity (relatively speaking
but I have a bad back and rarely drive somewhere that I could really enjoy such a car
I do like seeing both the occasional Evora and GR Corolla on the street too
I’m not sure why you wouldn’t buy the Lotus over the Toyota at the same price point
I mean sure reliability might be less for the Lotus but as long as the warranty is covering it who cares
Actual repairs and maintenance might be tens of thousands more
Well that’s not the same price is it
the brand new thing depreciates more… so… kind of a wash
You understand the Evora has a Toyota engine though
It’s not going to cost you Ferrari or even Porsche money to maintain
I love these and they are always a consideration
but I don’t think I’ll ever actually buy one
I just don’t drive in anger that much lately
and I’ve got too many other things to deal with to get into autocross or track days in the near future
I wonder if my incredible independent shop – that will only work on Japanese
and Korean makes – would be able to handle the clutch replacement if I got the bodywork off myself
I have a trusted body shop to get the bodywork back on straight
I figured you’d need to drop the rear subframe
but you should ask your colleagues if it will baby
modern baby seats won’t fit in the back of my much bigger and heavier 4 passenger BMW convertible unless the front seat is at the most forward
I was able to take my primary school aged grandchildren in their booster seats
Still had to slide the seat partway forward
In my 2000 Cherokee the front seats had to be moved forward and the backs straight up to fit a rear facing seat in the middle of the backseat
Putting it on either side simply was not an option
It even has the LATCH system in the back seat
According to Torch, it will actually baby.
“Back in 2006, iconic British sports car brand Lotus hatched a plan to broaden its appeal. The featherweight Elise and its hardcore Exige brother were fantastic, but they were a bit raw for everyday use.”
Also on sale back in 2006 were the super-hardcore Lotus 2-Eleven (no doors, no roof, no windshield) and the comfy version of the Elise/Exige: the Europa, with a nice reliable GM turbo 2.0 and some sound deadening.
The plan for my Europa is that when I can’t manage getting in and out any more (it’s easier than an Elise, but not much) then I’ll get an Evora. I test drove an Evora when they were new, and found it to be as comfy as my BMW 535 but as involving as my Elise. I guess that’s why I still can’t afford one.
If I was in a position to buy either of these fantastic cars… I’d be a very happy man… well MORE happy at least lol
35 shop hours to replace the clutch!? Do you realize how much that is in dollars?
Our hourly rates are more like $200-250 an hour around here.
I think that’s because the gearbox has to come out of the top of the chassis, not the bottom, so the rear bodywork has to come off. I took all the body work off my Elise and it wasn’t that hard, so maybe you can strip it down yourself to save money.
Although if you’re taking the car to bits that much you might as well drop on a supercharger while you’re there.
I think the Emira clutch can be done from underneath, so it’ll be a fraction of the cost.
That might be the craziest WYIT I’ve ever heard. I’m not even mad.
Turbo replacement on a Z32 300ZX was a 24 hour job. I thought that was crazy.
All the style of a British car with reliable Japanese mechanicals for the same amount of money as a lesser Japanese car?
If these were that cheap when I bought my Elise I might have bought one of them instead. They definitely weren’t two years ago.
Damn you, Thomas. Now I’m going to have to explain why this is a good idea to my wife.
Aren’t GR Corollas getting a bit of a reputation for spontaneously combusting? And then Toyota denying warranty coverage?
The Toyota quad-cam V6 has long been a lovely engine looking for a nicer home, it is nice that Lotus (of all companies) gave it one.
THAT BEING SAID…you’re not tracking one without cooling upgrades. The differentials are known to overheat after only a few laps and once they’re too hot the power delivery is nerfed. Unfortunately Toyota hasn’t found a fix for this the last time I checked.
They’re cool cars, but they’re meant for the street and the occasional dirt or gravel backroad blast.
I blew the engine in my FR-S around 35k miles, Toyota covered the replacement. Unmodified, unabused and properly maintained.
It did take them a month to do the repair, but I got a loaner Corolla.
Same. I got a hybrid Corolla. The mileage was amazing and it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, which isn’t to say it was at all satisfying to drive, just that it wasn’t actively bad (unlike my ’08 Camry). I recommend it for anyone who is looking for “just a cheap, reliable car that’s cheap to run”.

The article shares an open access research tool for studying animal communication that was developed as part of Evora’s Elon Lumen project
collaborators from the University of Missouri and Curtin University and Hamel
The article appears in a special issue of the journal Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata
Elon alumna Alana Evora ’23 and Jen Hamel
associate professor in the Department of Biology
have co-authored an article in a special issue of the journal Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata that shares an open access version of a computing tool for research on animal communication
This research was conducted at Elon University as part of Evora’s Lumen Project and Honor’s thesis
The article, “VibePy: an open-source tool for conducting high-fidelity vibrational playback experiments,” was co-authored by Evora (first author)
VibePy is a free software solution to a common challenge encountered by researchers who study vibrational communication
in which an animal communicates by shaking or otherwise imparting waves into a substrate
is used by animals ranging from insects to elephants
including an estimated ~200,000 insect species
Researchers often test hypotheses about vibrational communication by using a type of study called a playback experiment
the signals of a focal species are recorded and played to other individuals with the aim of observing their responses to the signals
A common challenge of vibrational playback experiments is that the substrate through which the signal is played
as well as the hardware used to play the signals
distort the signals via unwanted frequency filtering
An additional challenge is that researchers need to calibrate the amplitude or “loudness” of the signals being played
and because propagation of waves through solid substrates is difficult to predict
such calibration needs to be done on a case-by-case basis
A software solution that compensates for unwanted frequency filtering and calibrates playback amplitude is available
but it requires a proprietary software license and therefore imposes a cost barrier to researchers
is occurring in a diverse and growing community
and Evora and Hamel saw the need for an open-source software solution that could accomplish the same functions as the existing script
a vibrational communication researcher at the University of Missouri who developed the original script
an animal acoustics researcher with extensive experience developing open-source software for research applications
measures and compensates for undesired filtering and calibrates playback amplitude
and it has been developed using the open-source
VibePy is available free for download online (doi: 10.5281/zenodo.10059888)
The article is part of a themed special journal issue on biotremology
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata is a peer-reviewed
and its primary focus is to publish research in experimental biology and the ecology of insects and terrestrial arthropods

We need to be honest for a moment. Performance cars, as much as we love them, aren’t always the most practical, comfortable or usable of transportation options.
Look at most supercars and high-performance sports cars and you need the lithe, athletic frame of a ballerina to get in and out with your dignity intact, they generally ride like a bag of potatoes and the less said about storage space for actual things the better. And when it comes to reliability, well… let’s just say that with many marques, you’ll become very well acquainted with your local dealer.
You may have an inkling that we like the Evora. And you’d be right, because it’s a flipping brilliant machine. Fast, smooth, comfortable and beautifully styled, it’s a compelling package.
This particular example is a cracker too. Possessed of a stellar service record, and presented in a lovely white-over-black colour scheme, this is an awfully fine sports car, grand tourer and baby supercar all wrapped up in one pert, surprisingly capable package.
Too many people have forgotten or ignored the Evora – and we think that’s a real mistake. We reckon that, in future decades, the Evora will be recognised as one of the high watermarks in the glorious history of the marque. And when you consider how storied that history is, you’ll understand why this winsome machine excites us so much.
62,986 miles on the clock, verified by the service and MOT records
Stamped service book with services as follows: Mar 2013 @ 6,612 miles, Sep 2013 @ 9,367 miles, Apr 2014 @ 17,010 miles, Jan 2015 @ 24,962 miles, Feb 2016 @ 32,134 miles, Oct 2016 @ 33,990 miles, Oct 2017 @ 41,861 miles, Oct 2018 @ 49,023 miles, Oct 2019 @ 52,487 miles, Jul 2021 @ 55,087 miles, Aug 2022 @ 58,113 miles, Aug 2023 @ 61,077 miles
Collection of invoices for servicing and maintenance
Current MOT with no advisories expires 5 January 2026
Excellent MOT record - not even an advisory since 2016
Lovely black leather Recaro seats, presented in fine overall condition, with a little light creasing and wear in evidence, commensurate with the car’s age and mileage
Specified from the factory as a two-seater – which is actually very practical as it offers a useful amount of extra luggage space (and the standard 2+2 rear seats in the Evora are unusable for most people)
Black carpets through the cabin show very well, with no threading or staining we could see
Light grey headlining looks to be secure and intact with no tears or damage, just a couple of minor marks
Air-conditioning, which was regassed in March 2025
Double-Din Alpine stereo system with sat-nav
All of the cabin controls and instruments present well, showing in great condition with some light patina and blemishes from use
The internal trim all appears to be in good order and intact, with a small amount of the usual lift showing on the upper panels of the dashboard
There is a useful rear boot space, perfect for overnight bags, which is neatly trimmed in black carpet
The vendor tells us that everything in the cabin functions just as it should, with no faults or issues reported
Handsome gloss white paintwork with black trim, which really suits the Evora and enhances the lines
The paintwork is in good overall condition, with a few minor blemishes and chips, but nothing that would concern us
The body itself comprises of a three-section composite shell with plastic front and rear bumpers – other than a small crack on the lip of the near-side front wheel arch, the bodywork looks to be in excellent condition with no notable damage
Paint Protection Film (PPF) is fitted to the front bumper, leading edge of the bonnet, around the wheels arches and the lower area of the rear valance
All of the glass elements are in fine fettle, with no misting or cracking apparent – the light lenses are similarly clean and clear
The external trim and badging all looks to be complete and in good order, with nothing missing and no significant damage we could discern
Underneath, the car looks very clean and straight, with no obvious damage to the sills or undertrays and just a smattering of surface corrosion to some suspension components
Staggered (18” front and 19” rear) OEM Lotus 10-spoke forged alloy wheels, finished in metallic smoke grey
The alloys are in reasonably good condition, with a little bubbling and lacquer peel in places and a couple of small chips
A matched set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres is fitted (25/40 front and 255/35 rear), which the vendor tells us have c.3mm on the front and c.5mm on the rear
3,456cc naturally-aspirated V6 – all alloy Toyota engine
Factory performance figures: 276bhp, 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 162mph
Performance ITG cold air intake fitted (original parts also supplied)
Uprated Evora 400 clutch and flywheel fitted (February 2025)
Sports Pack cross-drilled disc brakes all round
The engine bay is nice and clean, with no obvious issues or evidence of leaks that we could discern
Exceptionally clean MOT record and excellent service history give real confidence that this car has been carefully maintained, though we’d budget for a service soon given the time since the last oil change
We’re assured that the car starts, runs and drives brilliantly, with no faults or issues reported
High-performance sports car, grand tourer or baby supercar – whatever you want to call the Evora, it’s more than capable of comfortably fulfilling the brief. When you add those fabulous looks and the build quality of that surprisingly charismatic Toyota V6 into the mix, the Evora starts to look like the answer to an awful lot of questions.
This particular example has clearly been cherished and properly maintained, but also driven and used as it should be. That’s the perfect recipe to keep a car in prime condition, and we reckon this one is a genuine gem.
It’s not often you can say any sports car, let alone a Lotus, is a no-brainer. But when it comes to satisfying the head and capturing the heart, very little comes close to the Evora.

Amanda Evora Will reflects on her competitive skating career and discusses how she now loves being a wife
Above: After coaching in Florida for many years
Evora Will and Jim Peterson moved their pairs camp to Canton
They guided Valentina Plazas and Maximiliano Fernandez to the 2024 World Championships in Montreal
The following story appeared in the May 2024 issue of SKATING magazine. Click here to purchase a subscription
Olympic pairs skater Amanda Evora Will is grateful that in Michigan
skaters typically skate before or after school
This leaves much of her day open to be with her two children
“I identify myself as a working mom,” Evora Will said
Leia goes to daycare three times a week and is with her mother-in-law once a week
“You’re always trying to find the happy balance of working and having enough time to make sure that you’re a mom and you’re not missing all the greatest moments for them,” she said
After two decades living in Florida as a competitor and then as a coach
is reveling in the blend of work life at the Arctic Edge of Canton and home life in Rochester Hills
To quote a caption she wrote on Instagram shortly after Paul’s birth: “I am reminded that love is never divided but shared exponentially.”
She and Jim Peterson run a pairs program at Arctic Edge
They have been referred to as yin and yang (Chinese thought for two opposite but complementary forces)
“We created a school here; we think of it as a boutique style pair program,” Evora Will said
“The whole idea of it is we would like to have a handful of pair teams where we’re keeping a close quality control on them and making sure that we have a good sense of hitting their potential in skating.”
Figure Skating Championships were a great experience for Evora Will as not only did she and Peterson see their team
Valentina Plazas and Maximiliano Fernandez
earn a spot on the podium and trip to the World Figure Skating Championships
but there was the rush of enthusiastic audiences
“It was a full house almost every day in Columbus
and it was nice for the athletes and coaches to have people in the stands,” Evora Will said
“I was lucky to go to nationals this year.”
This involves quite a bit of off-ice jump work
“You can definitely say I have an enthusiasm for our sport
I’ve kind of fallen into those opportunities,” she said
Olympic and Paralympic Committee athlete representative for figure skating
the first athlete representative to hold an officer position
“I’m still learning all that my role entails,” she said
In addition to serving on several committees
she had a voice in adding novice pairs and ice dance to the 2024 U.S
understanding the valuable experience national competition provides
Family lore is that early on she said she wanted to go to the Olympics
and the family moved several times for his work
the family lived in Texas and her father worked for Tara Lipinski’s father
“My dad’s first nationals wasn’t with me,” she said with a laugh
Evora Will started pairs skating at the suggestion of Mitch Moyer
After a two-year partnership with Michael Adler
she teamed with Mark Ladwig with whom she competed for 10 seasons — earning two silver
one bronze and two pewter medals at the U.S
They competed twice at the World Championships and finished 10th at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games with some of the best programs of their career
Evora Will was the first Filipina American figure skater on a U.S
which earned her an invitation to the White House for a luncheon honoring the then-president of the Philippines
In a discipline where teams break up after one or two seasons
Evora Will and Ladwig were known for their longevity
They stayed focused on their unified goals and were clear on what they both wanted for the partnership
“Even though we had a vision of wanting to stay together and understanding that we had the same values for longevity
it was important for us to have honest conversations and address things on a yearly basis,” she said
“It made it a lot easier to then commit for another year
We saw success as a byproduct of our hard work.”
Evora Will said some of her favorite memories of competition are of practices
which had a wonderful sense of anticipation
Traveling to international competitions was also exhilarating
After ending her competitive career in 2012
earning a degree in business administration from University of South Florida

a new generation of women vocalists is emerging from the Bare Foot Diva’s shadow
seeking to define their own paths while honoring the traditions of the past
Paulinha was one of trio of women singers opening the 10th edition of the Atlantic Music Expo at the Auditorio Nacional
They were amongst the half-dozen female vocalists seeking to make new voices resonate with the island’s defiance and “Creolitude”
“We’re just following our dreams,” Paulinho sighs
“I’m asking our youth to live their passion by assuming this Kriol heritage; but to modernize it
Everything starts with a dream and I just wanna dream big.”
This included the artist Fattù Djakité, a Bissau-Guinean who grew up in Cape Verde. Fattù was one of the stars of AME’s previous edition and no wonder: her voice has astonishing range and her onstage presence has been lauded both home and abroad
she was back to show her another facet of her talents as an engaged painter
my aim was to expose my multiple identity in music
Our music in Guinea Bissau is still virgin territory
no one knows about it and its music and its mix of Fula and Mandinka cultures
I’ve married our different heritages with those of Cape Verde’s
Even my songs are a fusion of the two Creole languages.”
Fattù embodies this new wave of female empowerment in Cape Verde
where women are breaking down traditional barriers in the music industry
No longer confined to the role of vocalist
gaining control over their sound and their careers
“We have so much to say as Cape Verdean women
we’re saying it in ways that are louder and stronger than ever before,” Fattù asserts
These past years she has accumulated awards for her engagement
including being named one of the 100 most influential personalities of the Lusophony world
articulates the mother-of-one’s drive to bring these islands together: “Guinea Bissau is way behind Cape Verde in exploring its music and preserving our history and heritage
Two figures who have been instrumental in nurturing this new Lusophone African wave of talent are José da Silva and Augusto Veiga
José is the founder of the Lusafrica and Harmonia record labels and one of the driving forces behind AME
He was also the former manager of Cesária Évora
has just been promoted from AME general director to the country’s Minister of Culture and Creative Industries
has made it his mission to ensure that Cape Verdean women artists have access to the international exposure they need to succeed
“The women of Cape Verde have always been essential to our musical heritage,” Veiga explained
they lacked the platforms and resources to advance their careers internationally
The festival provides opportunities for women to not only perform but also to network with international music professionals, from agents and managers to journalists and festival curators. “AME is about more than just performing,” Veiga insisted. “It’s about connecting with the people who can help take your career to the next level.” One such person is Paul Duhaney
The artistic director of Africa Oye returned to the festival for the first time in five years to gauge the new generation of musicians and their arrival on the Praia scene
Paul underlined a certain anomaly in the gender balance in Europe’s festivals which leaves him puzzled: “I think Cape Verde has always been strong with female artists
There are all these amazing artists I’ve seen develop over the years
So that legacy is sort of entrenched in Cape Verdean culture
But what’s quite bizarre is when you go to festivals around the world in Europe
The festival line ups don’t translate this wealth
not only from Cape Verde but from all of Africa
Is this a conscious thing or is it subconscious?’ And so
we’ve been making a conscious effort for around five years to make sure that we are addressing this imbalance
It just seems normal and we shouldn’t be talking about it
But we have to because it still isn’t being addressed the way it should be.”
Duhaney insisted that the potential for Cape Verdean female vocalists has always been there: “Just look at the opening ceremony at the AME that we enjoyed
A number of young performances performers between the ages of 17 and 21 blowing us away
I look at their peers in the UK and it seems there’s so much more to develop at home
And I’m convinced that this is all because of the culture around singing and carrying on the legacy
I think that we will get a generational talent coming at some point
I just couldn’t tell you when it’s going to arrive.”
For David Andre
secretary general of the Seychelles’ newly formed National Institute of Culture
Cape Verde’s engagement in its own unique music culture should inspire small nations like his own
the 115-island archipelago in the Indian Ocean
Andre’s government has given his institute the fourth biggest public budget to encourage its population
“Cape Verde has shown us how to be proud of what you have
to find your own style,” Andre explained after his morning conference at the AME
“And its women singers are spearheading this effort
Instead of copying what we see coming from the US or Europe
persuade them that being faithful to one’s own identity is the surest path to getting recognized
One artist paving her own path both in the US and now in Cape Verde is Maura Delgado
She has benefited from AME support and is seen as a rising star
performing at the festival for the first time in 2024
questioning whether I should continue with music,” Maura shares with me after an impassioned set on the Palacio da Cultura Ildo Lobo stage
“But being part of AME gave me the confidence to keep going
made me realize that I have a place in this industry.”
While women have long been the leading vocalists in Cape Verdean music
they have traditionally been absent from the instrumental side of the industry
men dominated the roles of musicians and bandleaders
while women could only hope to come to the fore through their singing
this is beginning to change as more women take up instruments and assert themselves as complete musicians
“There’s been a delay in women playing instruments,” he notes
“But that’s starting to move at an increasing pace
We’re seeing more women learning the guitar
and it’s transforming the way Cape Verdean music is made.”
One of the standout performances at AME this year underlined José’s point
a multi-instrumentalist who played both guitar and drums during her set
Her performance was a testament to the growing presence of female instrumentalists in Cape Verdean music
“I knew that if I wanted to control my own sound
I had to learn to play the instruments myself,” explained Zubikilla
her long white dreadlocks lashing her face
“It was important for me to be able to create my music from start to finish.” The artist could also draw on a rich heritage: her father
Nhelas Spencer is one of the country’s most renowned composers and handed down a rich tradition of tabanka
batuku and koladero rhythms to mix with her soul
This artistic shift is also evident in Cape Verde’s music schools
where more and more girls are enrolling to learn instruments
“We’re seeing a new generation of girls who want to do more than just sing,” Augustinho Veiga told me
“They want to be in control of their own music
the success of his festival lies in its ability to foster creativity and innovation while remaining deeply connected to Cape Verde’s musical roots
“We want to show that Cape Verdean music is alive
Now that he has been nominated the country’s Minister of Culture
he hopes to amplify the gathering’s impact by growing its financial budget
which has been stagnating at €150,000 a year
“Our artists are blending traditional styles like morna and funaná with modern genres like jazz
creating something that’s uniquely Cape Verdean but also global.”
While the Atlantic Music Expo has provided a platform for new women vocalists to showcase their talents
much of the foundation for Cape Verde’s global musical presence was laid by José da Silva
and his management of Cesária Évora’s international career
José’s deep understanding of the country’s Creole identity has been central to his work
“Cape Verdean music is a fusion of many influences,” he explained to me as the festival was winding down
is what gives Cape Verdean music its universal appeal
It’s also what has allowed women vocalists to carve out their own space in the industry
it was difficult for women to make a living from music,” da Silva admited
“Families often discouraged their daughters from pursuing careers in the arts
especially if it involved singing in bars or performing in public
She showed that a Cape Verdean woman could build an international career and support her family.”
it also set a high bar that many younger women vocalists feel they must live up to
“Cesária’s legacy is both a blessing and a challenge,” insisted Gabriela Mendes
a well-traveled singer whose graceful concert at the Luis Camoes Square was another highlight of the edition
but we also need to move forward and make music that reflects who we are today.”
It’s a reflection of who I am – a Cape Verdean with global influences.”
The walls of 5tal host hundreds of black-and-white photographs of Cape Verdean music legends
“I dream of coming back to Cape Verde one day,” she said
to bring everything I’ve learned abroad back to the islands
We may sing in a Creole that only our people understand
Such spiritual food is complemented at the 5tal by the culinary delicacies served up by its owner and chef, Alia Santos
A former civil servant in the Ministry of Culture
Alia concocts delicious traditional Cape Verdean cuisine for regulars and tourists alike
This proud self-starter has been quite the catalyst for the country’s music since she decided back in 1995 to drop her job and marry gastronomy with sound
“I’ve been lucky enough to host some of the country’s greatest artists,” she told me whilst serving up a generous portion of peixe seco à moda de Santiago
In the background, one of the restaurant’s veterans, Nataniel Simas, belted out “Nha Vida Di Novo” (to be found on his February release of the same name)
The restaurant is packed full of a seamless mix of locals and wizened tourists
Alia slipped me her self-published book Temperos Da Chef
224 pages of Cape Verdean recipes and anecdotes that do honor to this unique restaurant mixing our taste buds with our love for the island’s traditional music
Women have always played a central role in Cape Verdean society
women were often left behind to care for their families and preserve the country’s cultural traditions
music became a way for women to express their experiences
Genres like morna and batuque became spaces where women could voice their struggles
“Cape Verdean women have always been the cultural keepers of our country,” writes historian Laura Borges
who has published extensively on Cape Verdean gender dynamics
“They’ve held families together during times of migration
and they’ve used music to tell their stories
pushing the boundaries of what Cape Verdean music can be.”
For Cape Verdean artist Rita Eversta Lopes de Moura Fernandes
these themes of resistance and empowerment are central to her work
The 74-year-old painter stood calmly in her small house on Rua de Banana in the historic town of Cidade Velha (a 15-minute drive from Praia)
She was surrounded by hundreds of her paintings
Rita’s paintings are illuminated by these themes of strength and emancipation
but they also explore history and migration
providing a broader cultural perspective on the struggles and triumphs of Cape Verdean women – both in music and in society
“Women in Cape Verde have always worked hard,” Fernandes explained in a long interview
For decades Rita has been exploring the struggles and triumphs of Cape Verdean women in her art
Her paintings often depict the hardships faced by women
from the violence of colonization to the legacy of migration
Her work also touches on the lingering impact of the Portuguese long presence on the islands
particularly the ways in which it has shaped Cape Verde’s cultural identity
“The legacy of colonization is something we still live with today,” she said pointedly
“But my work is also about imagining a future where Cape Verdean women are unshackled from the humiliations they felt for so long
where they have the freedom to express themselves fully.”
Cape Verde’s unique cultural identity is deeply rooted in this history of creolization
This cultural fusion has been central to the development of Cape Verdean music
from African rhythms to Portuguese fado and Brazilian samba
this cultural hybridity is Cape Verde’s greatest strength
“Creolization is at the heart of who we are as Cape Verdeans,” he said
“It allows us to be comfortable wherever we go
Our music reflects that – it’s a blend of different influences
which is larger than the population of the islands themselves
has played a critical role in shaping the nation’s music
creating a transnational community that continues to influence the cultural and musical life of the islands
This connection to the diaspora is particularly strong among women
many of whom have used their music to maintain a link to their homeland while also exploring new possibilities abroad
“The diaspora is our greatest resource,” José da Silva said
and it allows us to bring new influences back to Cape Verde.”
this connection to the diaspora is not just about cultural exchange – it’s also about empowerment
Some of her large tableaux depict the historical struggles and defiance of a population which has known famine and extreme poverty down the centuries
Whether they’re living in Cape Verde or abroad
And it was kept alive by the women in the inner islands of Santiago,”
Rose insists on the link between musicians like Nacia Gomi and her batuko and the revolutionary movements that swept the region in the Seventies
“The revolutionary leader Amilcar Cabral called upon Nacia to help to bring it forward amongst the populations of Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau
She did a whole lot to strengthen (Cape) Verdean culture through music.”
Half a century later, and it’s another female vocalist who is strengthening this identity through her forages both into new genres and old morna classics. Mayra Andrade, has just released a delicious live album, ReEncanto
to add to the five she’s brought out since 2006
I remember Cesária Évora telling me that the Paris-based singer was the likeliest to take over her mantle
bossa nova and electronic influences into her morna interpretations
For Azores filmmaker and artistic director Filipe Tavares, she was a natural choice to headline the 10th anniversary of his 2024 Azores Burning Summer festival
Filipe was one of a half-dozen festival pioneers invited to the 2024 AME to share his event’s approach and philosophy
“Mayra has a compelling stage presence,” he told me a month after the August 2024 edition of Burning Summer
He laughed in a telephone exchange from the Azores: “At this year’s festival
she captivated a record audience and even had us singing in a Kriol we only ‘understood’ phonetically
But we were helped by our Cape Verdean diaspora which populates many of the Azores islands.”
Filipe and his team are hard at work preparing the 2025 edition which promises to be a heightened example of mixing music with their commitment to the environment and social issues
“Being at AME was a strong signal of the complicity we are building across the Atlantic
We’re learning from each other and inspiring our colleagues on the musical
As Cape Verde’s music scene continues to evolve
leading the charge toward innovation and transformation
“Cape Verdean music is in good hands,” insisted Augusto Veiga
something that reflects who they are and where they come from
noting that the future of Cape Verdean music will be shaped by the next generation of women vocalists
“These women are incredibly innovative,” he said
“They respect the traditions that came before them
They’re the future of Cape Verdean music.”
the journey towards renewal is a deeply cathartic one
“But now I’m connected again with my supporters
With Cape Verdean women continuing to break barriers and forge new paths in music
voices like Paulinha’s should ensure that Cape Verde’s musical heritage remains vibrant
This article was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Atlantic Music Expo and the impeccable support of its press coordinator Fred Miguel (who was rewarded with a trophy for her years of service at the help of AME)

a recreation of Lancia’s Group 4 rally icon
especially considering its $680,000 price tag and ultra-low production numbers
The Kimera differentiates itself from the rest of the restomod set with a funky twin-charged engine
and a retro-inspired cabin that actually feels finished
It’s an exotic car in the truest sense—and far more appealing than any other restomod at a similar price
It’s only in real life you get a sense of the EVO37’s true size, as we discovered at HK Motorcars
the nation's only dealer for Kimera Automobili
It’s proportionally identical to the original Lancia
which means it’s tiny—shorter even than my NB Miata
with a manufacturer-claimed curb weight of just 2,376 pounds
Under the rear clamshell things stray from Lancia’s original formula
Where the 037 used a supercharged inline-four
the EVO37 employs a supercharged and turbocharged 2.1-liter four-cylinder
This engine is a blueprint-copy design lifted from Lancia’s later Delta S4 Group B bomb
equipped with stronger internals and a handful of other modernization upgrades
Things like the suspension and brakes have been redone to handle the extra power
Kimera kept the suspension’s original layout
which includes a quirky dual-shock setup for the rear uprights
Only the dimensions and materials have changed
big red Brembo calipers with drilled rotors reside behind each wheel
But as is sometimes the case with low-volume recreations
good ingredients don’t always translate to a cohesive experience
Any rando shop can order high-quality parts and bolt them to a chassis
Thankfully the Kimera is more than just a fancy garage piece
it’s one of the most enjoyable drives I’ve had in the past year
The startup procedure is an event all its own
you have to lock then unlock the car via the key
plug the key into a slot on the center console and turn it to awaken the electronics
you have to squeeze two buttons mounted on either side of a mound on the console
There’s also a switch on the dash for the fuel pump that
if you forget to flip in the right direction
The cabin itself is an extremely cool place to spend time
It’s less a revisitation of the 037’s original interior and a more retro redux of the 1980s theme as a whole
The bucket seats use a slatted pattern of pads
The simple three-pronged steering wheel is small
Even the stalks for the blinker and windshield wipers feel high-quality
The centerpiece of the cockpit is the gearshift
which looks to be held to the console by a lovely 3D-printed metal sculpture
the car presents you with a choice between three power tunes: 300
Those with any sort of experience driving light cars with big power can skip the first two options
the two lower settings feel artificially lethargic and neutered
The chassis feels tight and well-connected
while the steering is quick and relatively light
Those Öhlins deliver a stiff but sophisticated ride
giving the sense the EVO37 could handle itself on rougher patches of tarmac at speed
had we had more than a couple of hours with the car
But it only takes a few turns to realize Kimera can build a car
The EVO37 is set up to turn in quickly and rotate
The nose is eager to respond yet locked down to the pavement
ready to blast to the next bend or get sideways
especially from a car with a wheelbase this short
That’s modern suspension engineering for you
The twin-charged mill is a fascinating setup that translates to a unique power delivery I’ve never felt before
The supercharger spins from idle to 4,000 rpm to fill in low-end torque
Being an engine originally designed 40 years ago
Nothing really happens until about 3,000 rpm
when a wave of thrust arrives to carry the car forward
The dull roar of the supercharger disappearing sounds jarring
But as the mountain of torque comes in from the turbo
you realize that was just the switch-over happening
and easy to optimize once you understand how it functions
Kimera smartly employs short ratios for the EVO37
That means it’s easy to keep the engine spun up near the meat of its powerband
The clutch is among the heaviest I’ve ever felt
The lever feels hyper-mechanical and impeccably direct
I don’t think I could miss a gear if I tried
It feels lifted straight out of a pro-level race car of the early 2000s
The gearbox and the engine are great, and not just because of how they react, but how they sound and feel. The Kimera sets itself apart from new high-powered weapons like the similarly priced Lamborghini Revuelto
but because there’s no sound-deadening or driver aids
loud machine built with new-school technologies with the sole goal of driver enjoyment
The Kimera EVO37 is the truest, most-accurate interpretation of an “exotic” car on the market right now. Sure, cars like the Lamborghini or the Ferrari F80 come from exotic brands
brimming with excitement that can’t be dulled
that’s far more important than what’s on a spec sheet

A fuel return of almost 13mpg from an initial Volvo B8RLE with MCV Evora bodywork in the BorderBus fleet has seen the Suffolk operator order a second example
The existing vehicle is a 2023 example that is used on route 146 between Norwich and Southwold
and that is where the additional B8RLE Evora – a 10.8m model currently in build – will also be utilised
BorderBus Managing Director Andrew Pursey says that the first bus has returned 12.86mpg
adding that such a figure “is very competitive given the passenger loads we carry.”
He notes that the vehicle “has not skipped a beat in service” to leave the decision to order another an easy one
The B8RLE Evora came onto BorderBus’s radar after Mr Pursey saw others operating locally. “To collect some feedback, a group of us took a journey on an Evora in the Sanders Coaches fleet
and the first thing we all noticed was the quality of the ride,” he notes
“The suspension was so smooth; it soaked up the bumps and potholes – aided by the fact it rode on 22.5-inch tyres
rather than the 19.5-inch tyres common on vehicles of this size
The operator was initially cautious of the fuel penalty that may come with a heavyweight bus compared to a lighter model
but Mr Pursey describes the B8RLE’s return as excellent
Drive from the 7.7-litre D8K engine is taken via a ZF EcoLife automatic gearbox
The new bus will cover around 72,000 miles per year
It and its stablemate will be serviced and maintained in-house
supported by parts from the Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South and East dealership in Norwich

The creation of a public metrobus in Évora is one of the proposals resulting from the ongoing review of the city's Urbanisation Plan (PU)
indicated that the metrobus project is recommended in the PU review proposal
which has already been presented and is now going for public discussion
“It is public transport with its own lane and priority over all traffic to save time and offer the city a mobility alternative that allows many people to do without a private car”
Pinto de Sá admitted that “it is a very ambitious
but fundamental to building the future of Évora”
so “an in-depth discussion is required” on how it can be implemented and obtain the respective financing
explained that the metrobus project involves the circulation of a type of electric bus in a “dedicated and exclusive corridor” with “priority in relation to other routes”
According to this urban planning specialist
the proposed route for the metrobus is 14.5 kilometres long
has several stops and is “essentially circular
one to the north and the other to the south”
Jorge Carvalho highlighted that the proposal now presented “begins to conceive the evolution of the city based on the idea of a corridor dedicated to public transport”
"The entire city is designed with a sequence
where people meet and where we can stimulate the urban experience."
The coordinator of the PU review summarised that the document proposes “a new mobility paradigm” for Évora
based on the metrobus and “on smooth mobility axes
articulating all parts of the city” in the Alentejo
According to the president of the municipality
the proposed review of the Évora PU will now go to public discussion
from a “perspective of defending the collective interest and compatibility with the private resources so that it can be mobilised”
the mayor predicted that it will not be possible to approve the plan in the current term
which should take place in September or October this year

Suffolk-based BorderBus has placed an order for a second Volvo B8RLE MCV eVoRa
The order follows the proven performance of an identical model purchased in October 2023
which joined a 30-strong fleet comprised largely of competitor brands
The new 10.8m single-deck vehicle is being built to the same specification
and is scheduled to enter service later this year
It will join the existing eVoRa in operating the six-day-a-week 146 service from Southwold to Norwich
“We were sold on it immediately!” – Andrew Pursey
said: “The B8RLE MCV eVoRa came onto our radar as there’s a lot of them operating in the region
and we wanted to see how one would stand up against the single-deck buses we were already running
“To collect some feedback a group of us took a journey on an eVoRa in the Sanders Coaches fleet and the first thing we all noticed was the quality of the ride
The suspension was so smooth; it soaked up the bumps and potholes – aided by the fact it rode on 22.5inch tyres
rather than 19.5inch tyres common on vehicles of this size
Pursey’s only apprehension was as to whether the Volvo’s 7.7-litre D8K engine could match the fuel efficiency BorderBus was accustomed to from equivalent competitor vehicles on its fleet
which typically operate with a smaller 4.5-litre engine
He explains: “We suspected the larger engine might cost us at the pumps
It’s hit a real fuel efficiency sweet spot
which is very competitive given the passenger loads we carry
Drivers have also appreciated the extra performance as it means they don’t have to work the engine as hard
“The decision to order a second eVoRa was an easy one
as the first vehicle hasn’t skipped a beat in service
When you’re running a busy operation to timetable
you can’t underestimate the importance of a product which delivers great reliability
BorderBus has selected the D8K engine rated to 320hp and delivering a peak torque of up to 1,200Nm
This six-cylinder in-line engine is driven through a ZF automatic transmission
The new B8RLE MCV eVoRa is expected to clock-up around 72,000 miles per annum
Both vehicles will be serviced and maintained in-house
supported by a supply of Genuine Volvo Parts from the local Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East dealership in Norwich

The historic city of Évora, in the Alentejo region, gains a new hotel from the Mercan Properties Group today: the Holiday Inn Express Évora.
This new €16.8 million investment by the Mercan Properties Group will be operated under the banner of IHG Hotels & Resorts and will create 30 permanent jobs
enjoys a privileged location in an area of great historical and cultural wealth
The new hotel by the Mercan Properties Group harmoniously combines classic and modern design
While maintaining the building's original façade
which was renovated as part of an urban redevelopment project
the interior has been transformed into a contemporary and elegant space
the Holiday Inn Express Évora is the perfect choice for both leisure and business travellers to Évora
Following the opening of the Hilton Garden Inn Évora
this is the second hotel of the Mercan Properties Group in operation in the city of Évora and the third tourist development in the Alentejo region
where the group also owns the Holiday Inn Beja
The hotel management of the asset will be handled by AHM – Ace Hospitality Management
a company of the group specialising in the management of hotel developments
“We strongly believe in the tourist potential of inland Portugal and the group’s investment in the Alentejo demonstrates our confidence in the characteristics of this region
The Holiday Inn Express Évora reflects our commitment to the country and
an area in which we have invested since we arrived in Portugal in 2015
and we are certain that it will be a success and an asset that will complement perfectly the cultural and historical prestige of the city of Évora”

One thing that all good tech firms have mastered is the art of releasing regular new models without changing too much each time
you maintain demand for the older models because they’re still relevant and desirable
You already know where we’re going with this
Lotus has spent the last few years releasing ‘new’ models that are
Maybe it’s a slight spring rate tweak and 10kg more downforce
but not too much or there won’t be room to increase it by another 10bhp for the next special edition…
All that means that Lotuses tend not to depreciate very much, especially the hotter stuff with two seats and a penchant for weekend blasts and track days, a bit like the V6-engined Exige Sport 410 we told you about last week
You could argue that all Loti are the same in that respect
but some are a bit more ‘real world’ than others
That’s where this little gentleman’s express comes in
The Evora is defined by its two ‘if I have to’ rear seats
useful for kiddies and registered contortionists
Ambitious parents can shove the bare essentials into the mid-engined Evora’s frunk and pretend that it’s a practical family saloon
You get 276bhp (no supercharger back then) and a fantastic exhaust note from the 3.5-litre V6
through a five-second 0-60mph sprint and a top speed of 161mph
Average efficiency is definitely not the official 29.9mpg
We found this Evora V6 at the dirty end of the classifieds
It was the cheapest on Auto Trader UK at the time of writing
offered by a private seller with a fresh major service
two new Bridgestone Potenza rear tyres and an MOT certificate until August
The seller’s spelling isn’t the best and his ‘full stop’ key must have stopped working
so the advert text is harder to read than a Welsh lunch menu
The gist seems to be that it has plenty of kit
Much of the good stuff will have been contained within the three options packs when the car was new in 2010
In its eight years this one has done 79,000 miles; a nice
healthy number that shows the car has been regularly used
Its price is an intriguing £23,995 and the Lotus Silverstone service history is a big tick for your due diligence
Lotum are cars that do tend to change hands quite often because they’re so focused and expensive to run
so we wouldn’t worry too much about the fact that you’d be the sixth owner
look at this Evora as a fantastic Lotus sports car that’s still basically the same as the ones being churned out today
and it’s still only a third of the price of a basic new one
From what would have been a lower price point in 2010 anyway
the Evora has held its money ridiculously well over its eight years
imagine how little value it will lose from here on out…

Seems somewhat at odds with the Lotus mottos of add lightness
The article uses the plural forms “Lotuses” and later “Loti” in the same article

Let’s finally resolve this?Let’s contact Lotus and clarify what is the correct plural form according to them
And then make an article about it (so it can be used as a precedent and referred to later) and we all use what will then be considered the correct form

im afraid with my budget the only Lotus I’ll be able to afford is an Elan
10k mile per year is “not overused?” I’d say 20k miles isn’t overused
What are you going to shove in the back seat and/or trunk
a backpack with your laptop in it and a small suitcase for a weekend trip

Évora City Council will no longer proceed with the installation of a video surveillance system in the city's historic centre
video surveillance will not advance” in Évora
This city council has been studying the installation of video surveillance on some streets in the historic centre for about two years
Now the proposal has been rejected, with votes in favour from the two elected members of the CDU, against the two from the PSD and the abstention of the two councillors from the PS and another from the Movimento Cuidar de Évora (MCE)
with the casting vote of the president being valid
Noting that the CDU administration has “always been sceptical about video surveillance”
the mayor argued that “Évora is one of the safest cities in the country” and that in the city “crime levels are very low”
the need to move towards video monitoring”
defending community policing as an alternative
Pinto de Sá said that the installation of video surveillance in “half a dozen streets and areas” in the historic centre implied “an initial investment of around 740 thousand euros” and “an annual maintenance cost of more than 50 thousand euros”
we understand that it is not worth moving forward”
adding that “it is up to the Central Administration to guarantee the funds for security issues”

Granted, there were plenty of little fixes to be had. The original Evora won high praise from our editors for its handling on the street
but driving the Evora S on a track revealed unpredictable behavior at the limit
It tended to snap into big off-throttle oversteer during corner entry
which transitioned to mild on-power understeer when you caught it and went back to power
The 2021 Lotus Evora GT puts an end to the sketchiness
Its tires need some heat before they offer strong grip
so the first two or three laps of our figure-eight test course were a bit wild
But there's plenty of grip once the rubber heats up
with mild understeer midcorner and modest oversteer on the exits
the Evora GT is super communicative and playful without being harsh or threatening
Lotus delivers an impressive balancing act with the Evora GT
The Evora's ability to deliver serious performance without beating up its driver has always been its greatest strength
Such performance has increased demonstrably during the past decade
Ten years ago, our pro driver Randy Pobst noted how much he needed to slow his steering inputs into corners in order to keep the car reasonably stable; this time around
we noted how much steering we could and had to use in our performance testing
the car feels less twitchy and is easier to drive every day
We complained all those years ago about the pedals being positioned too far to the right
with the throttle obstructed partially by the center console
We also disliked the nonsensical lack of a dead pedal
Both gripes have now been addressed; the pedals in the 2021 Lotus Evora GT are perfect for performance driving
The Evora's shifter used to be too sloppy and its throws too long
it's so tight you can feel the gears and synchros engage through the cable-actuating lever
so much so you need to be a bit deliberate with your shifts
or you'll reach too far for the gear you want
The Evora GT's handling and controls aren't the only notable upgrades; every performance metric has improved dramatically
torque by 22 lb-ft compared to the 2011 model
and the car's 0-60-mph time of 4.0 seconds is a half-second quicker—though not the 3.8 seconds Lotus advertises
The quarter-mile time improves from 12.9 to 12.4 seconds
Lateral grip on the skidpad improves by an average of 0.07 g
The Evora's figure-eight lap time quickens by 0.8 second
Braking from 60 to 0 mph requires just 99 feet
a 3-foot improvement that moves the Evora into the supercar club
The 2021 Lotus Evora GT accomplishes all of this while weighing only 21 pounds less than the old car
mostly due to its $10,000 Extended Carbon Pack
Ten-grand is a lot of money for a claimed weight savings of 49 pounds compared to today's standard Evora
Drive one Evora GT with the Extended Carbon Pack and one without
and the lighter car proves itself more engaging
There's something slightly clinical about the standard Evora
but when you remove nearly a bag's worth of cement from the roof
the Lotus develops a distinctly more playful personality: It digs into corners a little more purposefully and dances off of them with a bit more pizzazz
Lotus probably could've left the weight on the hood
the 2021 Evora GT tends to get a bit light on the nose at triple-digit speeds
which is mildly disconcerting when the road is bumpy
This is the only time bumps so much as faze the car
the comfortable suspension offers a good amount of travel and compliance
so impacts are never painful and never upset the chassis balance
Over particularly big midcorner bumps at high speeds
you can hear and feel the suspension on the outside wheels running through its range of motion
either; if you told us Lotus didn't offer it
we'd believe you until we remembered it's legally mandated
But the system is amazingly hands-off: You can literally do donuts in an empty parking lot without it taking control
And so much grip is available on a winding road
the stability control doesn't have anything to do
It's not like you're moving too slow to trigger stability control
The speed this car carries in a corner is remarkable
which is especially good because it feels so light
you usually end up entering the corner traveling faster than you planned
and you get the slightest hint of understeer
and the Evora GT plants its tires and goes
but drive like you know what you're doing
and you can put every bit of the supercharged power to the ground
Such accelerative traction is another Evora high point Lotus managed to retain
The company also made sure not to mess with the excellent brakes
but the brakes have incredible stopping power and fade resistance
so much so you can see why Lotus didn't bother with a carbon-ceramic setup
the company's slavish devotion to hydraulically assisted steering is admirable when its reputation is built on weight savings
The Evora GT's steering feel and feedback are unmatched in modern cars
and they're not far off the feeling you get from a manual rack
That's not hyperbole: We drove a sports car with unassisted steering back to back with the Evora GT
that's not to say Lotus perfected everything
an aftermarket Alpine touchscreen stereo is a tough sell
even if it has Apple CarPlay and works pretty well by aftermarket standards
The same goes for the old-school combination of a physical key you must insert into the ignition and twist
followed by pushing the engine-start button on the top left corner of the dash once the gauges complete their startup dance
black-and-white displays in the gauges themselves betray the car's age
as does the lack of automatic climate control
so there's no performance advantage to justify them
and it's a compelling thought experiment
The Evora GT lands right on top of the BMW and Porsche in every performance metric
and it's priced similarly to the Cayman
the experience falls between the two: It's not quite as exciting as the BMW but is more engaging at all speeds than the Porsche
which only came alive at the bleeding edge of its capability
After 10 long years of slow, erratic improvement, the 2021 Lotus Evora GT leaves the market after 2021
just as it has finally realized its potential as a legitimate Cayman fighter
It remains imperfect in that oh so charming way Lotus gets away with thanks to an exceptional driving experience
But in a world full of mass-produced Porsches and BMWs
it's hard to say no to a hand-built car that does all the same things and draws a crowd

people may well look back on the Evora and question its role in the Lotus lineup
calling it too plump and plush compared to the minimalist Elise and Exige and not hyper enough compared to the Evija
and having just driven the latest iteration
it's old and relatively heavy and a little quirky
but it's also a brilliant drive and unlike anything else out there—except perhaps another Lotus
Cynics will focus on the words "heavier" and "softer"
Driving an Evora is all about the steering
Though hydraulically boosted—the Evora is the only current production Lotus with power steering—the feedback it delivers is magical
Lotus went so far as to make the steering wheel out of magnesium in order to reduce mass that could damp out feedback
And yet there are no sharp kicks as you might get with unassisted steering
because the Evora GT's steering is so quick as to be hypersensitive
which frankly amazes us (we suspect sorcery as the core technology)
but the Evora will respond to the slightest twitch of your arm muscles
and it requires light hands and heavy concentration not to turn each corner into a constant series of tiny course changes
One doesn't steer the Evora so much as guide it—but your guidance must be spot on
because the Evora will doexactlywhat you tell it
Even a quick glance at the center console to turn up the A/C is enough to send the Evora moving toward the breakdown lane
Call it a characteristic of British cars: Unlike German machines
many of which seem engineered to make you feel like a better driver that you actually are
demanding full focus and flawless technique
But the Evora doesn't smack your knuckles with a ruler the way the Aston Martin Vantage does; instead it grades your paper quietly
then hands it back with your mistakes marked in red
even as the Evora forces you to pay careful attention
it is merciful enough to provide an ideal learning environment
All of your driving takes place within a massive envelope of grip—and believe you us
it's a strange feeling to push a car as hard as one dares and not hear so much as a squeak from the tires
We can't quite credit this to light weight (3,175 pounds
a porker by Lotus standards) or downforce (now doubled to 141 pounds
so kudos most go to the superwide Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber
The GT's stability-control system has understeer mitigation
which is disabled in Sport mode—but if there's someone willing to push the Evora hard enough on a public road to evoke understeer
you'll forgive us if we decline to ride with him
When someone says the Evora drives like a softer Elise
rather being a carnival of speed and noise
Forget the stated performance figures of zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 188 mph with a manual transmission (3.9 and 174 for the automatic)
sourced from Toyota and supercharged by Lotus
always has thrust to spare and it takes little effort to get the Evora GT on the boil and keep it there
Most of your fast driving can be done in two gears
or even one; the shifter mainly serves as a volume knob
We split our time between manual and automatic cars
and while an automatic Lotus seems like a sacrilege to us
we understand the necessity in these days of the ubiquitous Porsche PDK
The Evora's automatic is a conventional Aisin torque-converter six-speed
and while it certainly doesn't shift as quickly as a dual-clutch can
the supercharged six's fat torque curve means there shouldn't be much shifting to do
the transmission likes to upshift early and the Sport program isn't very good
taking a bit too much time to detect the need for part-throttle downshifts
(Lotus told us the transmission's memory in our car had recently been cleared
") The assumption is that drivers will use the shift paddles
but if you're going to call on shifts yourself
the Evora's stiff clutch pedal requires three men and a pair of Clydesdales to get to the floor
but the shifter itself is sheer perfection
It's no surprise that roughly 70 percent of Evora buyers opt for three pedals
Ramp down your speed and you can begin to appreciate what a decade of maturity has done for the Evora
Since the retroactively named Series One cars appeared in 2010
The 2020 GT largely lacks the built-in-the-backyard feel of the original cars
The Sparco seats are fantastic and the switchgear is simple
All of the Evora GTs we sampled had body-color interior panels and stitching—a beautiful effect but at $1,750
Aside from the drumming of the tires and the heavy clutch
Lotus has made subtle tweaks to the Evora over the years
and we think the cars we drove for this test are among the prettiest we've seen
A new black panel between the taillights transforms the look from the rear for the better
All of the cars you see here have premium paint colors that cost $5,900 to $8,100
an $8,000 titanium cat-back exhaust (hence the blue-tinged tailpipe)
Lest you think there's a lack of typical British quirks
we found left-side mirrors that wouldn't adjust far enough outward and at least one good rattle in the driver's door
Outward visibility to the rear exists only if you use the strictest definition
which is to say what little you can see is
(The rearview mirror is much better suited to watching the supercharger wastegate actuator do its thing.) Oh
and if you've had the driver's door open for more than a minute or two
you cannot start the engine unless you press the unlock button on the key again to disable the immobilizer
We're pretty sure Lotus could fix this were doing so not illegal under Britain's Non-Functional Motor Car Act of 1911
the engine is sourced from Toyota and both transmissions from Aisin
so the oily rotating bits should be pretty well bulletproof
the Evora GT is not really alone in its field
pricing doesn't account for the Evora's unique driving experience
The Porsche is talented and the Corvette C8 should be as well
The Evija Is Lotus's 1,972-HP Electric Hypercar
Lotus Will Build Cars in China
Porsche's Cayman GT4 Is Everything We Want
The new Evora GT may be a little irrational and a little expensive
but driving it is one of the few unique experiences left in our rapidly digital motoring world
History may or may not be kind to the Evora GT
3.5L supercharged DOHC 24-valve V-6; 416 hp @ 7,000 rpm
The Lotus Evora GT is a car that continues to whisper sweet nothings in my ear
even after months out of the driver’s seat
Daydreams continue after being out of the seat of the 2021 Lotus Evora GT for a few months now
and the presence of this car have fired up a cacophony of synapses that no other car has ever given me
I slid down into the carbon Sparco bucket seats
caressed the smooth leather-wrapped steering wheel
right hand smoothly clicked the shifter into first gear
right foot slid down the skinny pedal as the left smoothly let out the clutch
and I was off with a satisfying auditory grumble from the engine just behind my head
I was able to spend an all-too-short 15+ hours behind the wheel of the Evora GT
covering 461 miles in the greater L.A./Palm Springs/Malibu area over a 3-day period
Let’s dive right in and unearth why this car whispered all the right things in my ears while I gave it a proper workout on some of the best driving roads in the country
I love the British quirkiness of the Lotus Evora
and the lightweight- and handling-first ethos
and that it looks like a car worth much more than it costs
The first quirk I found with the Evora GT is getting it started
You have to insert the key on the right of the steering wheel
and the car has to have been unlocked in a short period of time before you initiate that sequence
so you have to hit the unlock button on the key
The Evora GT feels super crisp and precise in all ways
and that is a rare thing in a modern car where you normally feel so disconnected from everything outside
This car is focused on the driver experience
There is no frunk for your shopping or luggage
although there is a tiny trunk and a back seat that is great for things and much less so for humans
I’m weird and like to have fun while driving out to do outdoor adventures, like whitewater kayaking and mountain biking. Sadly, the roof on the Evora is lightweight and not really designed to handle any sort of roof rack — meaning I can’t really use this car to get out kayaking
The Evora is the only Lotus I really fit in — I’m 6’3″ tall with size 13 shoes — especially with a helmet for track days
Left foot braking is a challenge with my big feet and the position of the clutch pedal
I’m not sure there is a more performance-focused pedal box on a street car today
The front seats are pretty comfortable and supportive for sports buckets and have plenty of adjustment
I wish the bottom cushion angle was easier to adjust
as it requires removing the seat from the car and adjusting a few bolts
There is also no lumbar support in the carbon buckets
which is rough for someone like me with chronic back issues
the 3.5L V6 in the middle of the Evora GT is sourced from a Toyota Camry
It is tuned by Lotus and has an Eaton supercharger mounted to the top of it
Not only does it provide plenty of super linear power — 416 horsepower (at 7,000 rpm) and 332 pound-feet of torque — it also sounds absolutely amazing
An active exhaust lets you dial back the engine’s beautiful sounds a bit
for around-town driving — but that supercharger whine doesn’t go anywhere
While you get plenty of grunt from the get-go
this engine really wakes up between 5,500 and 7,000 rpm
you can get this car to 60 mph in under 4 seconds — 3.8
It will also just keep climbing to an impressive 188 mph
I wasn’t able to verify either of those numbers in my testing
but I assure you they seem reasonable and zero people will say that this car is slow
If you drive at a normal pace — which is incredibly hard to do — then the Evora GT will give you 17/20/26 mpg fuel economy
The Evora GT is impractical in mostly the right ways
Even the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks on the steering column are too far from the wheel
it’s a great feature when performance driving so you don’t bump either accidentally
The infotainment system not only looks like an aftermarket add-on
but it also is nearly impossible to read during the day
The six-speed manual transmission is sublime and the rack and pinion steering is the most communicative and precise I’ve felt in any road car
With a Torsen-type limited-slip differential and AP Racing four-piston calipers finding traction and bringing this lightweight — 3,175 pounds wet — car to a stop isn’t an issue
but they are actually one of the weaker-performing performance parts on the car
and amazing wheel and tire setup — 19×8 front and 20×9 rear wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 XL tires (245/35/19 front and 295/30/30 rear) — make for a planted
controlled ride that gives you all the feedback you could ever ask for
You hear and feel every stone and bump in the road
but it’s sublime when pushing the car to the limits
you might not think it when you look at the near dot-matrix driver’s displays and lack of modern safety and driver assistance tech
It doesn’t have things like lane keep assist
and blindspot warning — something it could use
it means much less weight and things distracting you from the amazing driving engagement this car provides
The Sparco carbon seats are heated but only offer an on or off setting
but you’ll probably just want to listen to the sweet tunes from the exhaust
The Evora GT quickly outruns its headlights
and automatic high beams would be a welcome feature on this car
I’ve had to pump my brakes a bit on pulling the trigger
and resale value just doesn’t hold up to its competitors
I don’t like to wrench and am not in a financial position to lose much money on fun cars
so this has caused a major battle between my brain and heart
Only Evora 400 and newer — meaning 2017 or newer in North America — have a dead pedal for your left foot
which had no dead pedal and way less room in the footbox than the newer Evora models
is also optimized for aerodynamics and looks more aggressive and appealing to me
Not to mention the cool carbon bits that come standard
Pricing seems to be pretty steady lately on modern Evora models
I haven’t found a good condition Evora 400 on the U.S
with a quality used Evora GT being upward of $90,000
The 2021 Lotus Evora GT base price is $96,950 (plus $2,200 destination charge)
The press loaner that I drove had a final sticker price of $107,000
and didn’t include the carbon package ($10,000) or titanium exhaust option ($8,000)
Both options are crazy expensive but add some flair to this already cool car
The Military Grey paint added $5,900 to the base price of this car
You also have to factor into your buying decision that the new Lotus Emira will be on the market in just a few months
and the Evora GT is already out of production
That means the Evora GT and Emira are essentially the same price
and the Emira will offer a full factory warranty and new car financing — as will some Evora GTs still on dealer lots
I recently sold my Porsche 996 Turbo for a solid profit in this crazy market
so am now on the hunt for a new-to-me on-road fun car
it is still at the very top of my list of things to buy
It’s such a fun car that I continually daydream about driving more
If the Emira is as good or better and offers the ability to add a roof rack — still TBD — then it could be my perfect on-road fun car. I still have my custom Lexus GX460 for off-road and overland adventures
Check out all the details on all things Lotus cars
PS: You can get this car with an automatic gearbox — but if you do
This car is meant to be driven with three pedals

Expat in Portugal gives advice to those considering the move
British holidaymakers heading to the historic Portuguese city of Évora could face a new tourist tax of €1.50 (£1.27) per night
under proposals currently being considered by local authorities
The new charge will apply to all guests staying in tourist establishments within the municipality
The measure is expected to generate approximately €600,000 (£506,385) annually for the local council
The charge will be capped at three consecutive nights
a measure designed to encourage longer stays in the historic city
The new tourist tax if approved will be rolled out in April or May 2025
If approved following the ongoing consultation process
the new tax scheme is expected to be implemented in either April or May this year
Students arriving to study in Évora who need to use hotel accommodation will not be required to pay the charge
Visitors with certain disabilities passing through the city will also be exempt from the tax
acknowledged that these exemptions would reduce the total amount of people staying in the city but believes that the increase in tax is reasonable
anyone who wants to contribute to improving or changing the regulations may do so under the terms determined by law
sending their duly substantiated proposals to the municipality."
The mayor added that the tax "is a very reasonable amount" when taking into account "what has been launched in tourist taxes in the country."
The proposal is currently undergoing public consultation
with residents and stakeholders invited to submit "duly substantiated proposals" for improvements or changes to the regulations
The public consultation period for the tourist tax proposal runs until February 17
The mayor of Évora said that the tax "is a very reasonable amount”
Tourist tax is on the rise across Europe with Gran Canaria also introducing a tourist tax.
Mogán town in Gran Canaria has brought in a new fee that will apply to visitors staying overnight
