Stalls of various goodies are set up every Sunday around the perimeter of Praça General Osório (General Osório Square) while the center of the square is reserved for artists selling much larger canvases and artworks About The Hippie Fair This famous fair was set up in the 1960s by a group of local hippies who were looking for a regular place to sell their handicrafts to tourists and locals until it reached the established and regular outdoor fair that it is today arts and crafts that make great gifts or takeaways to remember Brazil There are various types of more alternative clothing such as floaty dresses and gypsy-style tees as well as contemporary t-shirts and tops that make unique pieces for a casual day time look or dressed-up for going out Some stalls make leather items such as little shoulder bags and strappy sandals which certainly have an edgy over regular flip-flops There are also plenty of traditional Brazilian-style bikinis to take home as a memoir or use on the beach or try a handmade crochet bikini – the tops are versatile and can be worn both on and off the beach Most of the jewelry at the Hippie Fair is hand-made offering one-of-a-kind pieces in various styles There are some of pure silver with beautiful gemstones others made of black leather straps with metal or wooden trinkets Most of the jewelry stalls have everything from necklaces anklets and charms to add to your own chain Hammocks are popular at the market and can make an unusual and comfortable addition to the home or garden all beautifully and skilfully handcrafted into novel pieces At each corner of the park are food stalls, with many selling typical Bahian food One of the most authentic Bahian food is the Acaraje a croquette made from a mix of black-eyed peas There are also dozens of different desserts to try – just take the plunge and order any one off the menu for an indulgent treat yet it is better to keep haggling within reasonable margins Many of the stalls accept credit and debit cards but always bring some cash with you for smaller priced items or for the few stalls that may not be card-friendly yet The fair is right in between the subway and the beach so makes an ideal stop-off point to browse in after the beach It opens around 10am on a Sunday and closes in the early evening The nearest subway is Metro General Osório look for the exit ‘Praça General Osório’ But hands-down the most popular destination for a meal or snack is O Brazuca a Brazilian-run operation that specializes in deep-fried dishes and fresh sugarcane juice staff squeeze cups of fresh sugarcane juice using a mechanical press while from another they crank out virtually the entire spectrum of deep-fried Brazilian snacks – kibe But the majority of patrons come for pastel de vento deep-fried pastry shell the size of a knock-off Gucci purse that contains finely minced beef or gooey cheese The stall is a gathering place for Lisbon’s Brazilian community who taught us that pastéis do vento require generous squirts of ketchup and/or mayonnaise our initial run-in meant that we didn’t take as many photos as we would have liked But leaving the market with a bag of potatoes some spicy chilies and a belly full of Brazilian specialties farmer’s market ethos and multiculturality loading map - please wait...Map could not be loaded - please enable Javascript!→ more information This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon The best of Time Out straight to your inbox We help you navigate a myriad of possibilities Sign up for our newsletter for the best of the city By entering your email address you agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and consent to receive emails from Time Out about news Sign up for our email to enjoy your city without spending a thing (as well as some options when you’re feeling flush) Our newsletter hand-delivers the best bits to your inbox Sign up to unlock our digital magazines and also receive the latest news By entering your email address you agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and consent to receive emails from Time Out about news, events, offers and partner promotions. View this post on Instagram Address: Avenida Brasília 254 (Terrapleno de Santos) Hours: from January 23 to March 16 Tickets: free Feira de Acari is closed down by the mayor after claims that gangsters used it to sell stolen goods Manoel Ribeiro has never known a world without Rio de Janeiro’s best-known flea market The swarming suburban bazaar was founded outside his home in 1970 It existed in 1993 when the market trader was shot nearby during an armed robbery and lost the use of his legs And, until last month, it continued to thrive – a Sunday institution famed for its suspiciously low prices and immortalised in songs by celebrated Brazilian musicians. “The Feira de Acari is a success. It has everything. It’s a mystery,” the singer-songwriter Jorge Ben Jor sang in one hit If Derek “Del Boy” Trotter – the fictional wheeler-dealer from the British comedy Only Fools and Horses – had been born in Rio it would have been here that he plied his trade the Acari street market was nowhere to be seen after Rio’s mayor ordered a sudden end to its half-century existence as he drove his motorised wheelchair to the market where he has worked for over 40 years Instead of wooden stalls stacked with merchandise and secondhand clothes Ribeiro found dozens of police officers and guards carrying riot guns and rifles The canine unit had deployed two Belgian shepherd dogs to keep angry traders at bay a former police chief tasked with shutting it down Acari’s market earned that nickname decades ago thanks to a booming trade in stolen car parts But Carnevale claimed car tyres and tailgates were not the only things on offer Gangs of cargo thieves had long operated in the area hijacking lorries transporting household appliances clothes and medicine and reselling the goods at the market or distributing them to nearby favelas “Unfortunately, 30% of all cargo thefts in Brazil are concentrated here in Rio right now,” said Carnevale who added that he had seen the deadly consequences of such robberies while serving in the homicide squad Animal traffickers also allegedly used the market: one man was caught selling an orange-beaked toucan for 6,000 reals (£955) Carnevale acknowledged that not all traders were involved in crime and that many depended on the market to survive The region is home to three of Rio’s largest favelas – Chapadão Acari and the Morro da Pedreira – and suffers some of the city’s lowest life expectancy levels Acari’s traders are seething at the closure and It’s not like they say that this is just drug traffickers and thieves,” said Ribeiro popcorn makers and fans “with a few minor defects” I can tell you with absolute certainty it’s 5%.” “They should separate the wheat from the chaff but that’s not what they’re doing They’re treating us all as thieves,” said Rodrigues a hilltop favela overlooking the mile-long market said Acari’s market – where he works with his son – was precisely the thing preventing the teenager falling into crime “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop – I learned that from my parents up north,” said Silva also crediting the market with helping him escape poverty after he migrated to Rio in 1986 from Brazil’s less-developed north-east I have a home to live in and a car to drive,” Silva said Other traders hailed the marketplace – which was also memorialised by Brazil’s most famous living sambista, Zeca Pagodinho – as a cultural treasure this is such a rich place,” said Aline Santos There’s something here for everyone,” Santos added as protesting traders gathered at the shuttered market with posters denouncing the government’s move As proof that her products had not fallen off the back of a lorry, Santos had taped 18 receipts to her poster showing they were legally purchased from a wholesaler. “We aren’t delinquents and we’re here to prove it,” she declared as the group proceeded through the defunct market to the sound of a funk track celebrating its bargain-basement prices The Feira de Acari has faced eradication before hundreds of troops besieged the area after a similar mayoral decree Ribeiro remembers helicopters swooping over Acari’s rooftops as the cinematic crackdown unfolded traders returned and Acari’s market was reborn attracting thousands of bargain hunters each week Carnevale insisted that this time would be different but admitted that enforcing the prohibition was a major challenge “It’s the challenge every winner faces – not how to win but how to ensure you keep winning.” Acari’s jobless traders hope he will fail. The market’s closure came as the region was still reeling from deadly floods that were partly blamed on climate change Ribeiro lost 5,000 reals’ worth of merchandise when rain caused the Acari river to overflow “This whole area turned into the sea,” he said “I lost everything.” he lamented its downfall but wagered that it would eventually return “My whole life I’ve made a living off this market it’s as if you’d worked for a company and one day were just sacked on the spot.” protesters had hung a banner by the roadside where customers once haggled This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025 The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media the Feira de Antiguidades da Lavradio has been a go-to spot for vintage finds nearly 200 vendors take over the city’s oldest residential street selling everything from retro cameras and typewriters to vintage furniture and home decor Prices are more reasonable than most antique shops (Pro tip: tone down your tourist vibes when haggling!) Municipalities and Tourist Products of RN (Femptur) which had the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) as one of the exhibitors came in second place in the Originality category economic and tourist potential to the public One of the differences of the Macaíba space was the scientific approach carried out by ISD throughout the two days of the event Students and researchers explained the Institute's lines of research and spoke about the importance of neuroscience and neuroengineering for research in neurorehabilitation they presented the two units of the Institute: the Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (Anita) and the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS) The medical student at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) was surprised by the presence of ISD at the fair “I didn't expect that at a tourism fair there would be a stand talking about neurosciences which is a field of medicine that I'm very interested in It was an opportunity to learn more about this area” It was also a surprise for little Ana Lívia who visited the fair accompanied by her parents She was interested in the anatomical representation of the human brain “Having contact with this type of knowledge is very meaningful for children seeing how the brain works was a new discovery Even if she can't understand everything that was explained The ISD stand was also visited by local and state authorities senator Zenaide Maia and governor Fátima Bezerra The head of the Rio Grande do Norte executive held the official opening of Femptur During the visit to the Macaíba city hall stand she praised the services provided by the Santos Dumont Institute Congratulations on the work you do and for developing science in RN” the fair was an opportunity to exhibit part of the scientific work produced 10 years ago by ISD in Macaíba “We present to society a summary of our interdisciplinary work that has been carried out for a decade in teaching research and extension actions at both Anita and IIN-ELS ISD has a Specialized Rehabilitation Center a master's degree in neuroengineering and laboratories open to researchers We increasingly want to be recognized as an institution integrated with local demands both in health care and solutions and in scientific production” The Macaíba stand also featured an exhibition of products manufactured in the municipality's Industrial Park such as Boku's popcorn and Chapinha ice cream and publicity for the Augusto Severo Scientific and Technological Park (PAX) The cultural area of the space included the literary works of Macaíba writer Auta de Souza and the cuisine and crafts typical of rural communities “It was a very important action for the municipality because it covered the entire Macaíba production chain We present all the potential we have for Rio Grande do Norte with emphasis on science and technology through the Santos Dumont Institute Our stand was one of the most visited at the fair a sign that people are interested in what Macaíba has to offer” The Fair of Municipalities and Tourist Products of RN (Femptur) took place on the 26th and 27th of April The event featured exhibitions from 50 Rio Grande do Norte municipalities and aimed to promote the tourist and economic development of Rio Grande do Norte The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) is a Social Organization linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC) and includes the Edmond and Lily Safra International Neuroscience Institute and the Anita Garibaldi Center for Health Education and Research ISD's mission is to promote education for life forming citizens through integrated teaching in addition to contributing to a fairer and more humane transformation of Brazilian social reality Communication Education through Presidential Decree of February 27 Carlos Moedas wants to give up the Feira Popular project but still build the Urban Park the opposition criticizes the President and does not give up the amusement equipment The project had been announced by Medina in 2015; the Urban Park should have been ready in 2018 We explain the twists and turns of this story that the Feira Popular de Lisboa was to be installed a facility that operated until 2003 in Entrecampos the future Parque Urbano da Pontinha/Carnide The two projects would coexist in the same space From the announcement of the project in 2015 to today six years have passed.. and neither Feira Popular nor Urban Park is ready the Feira Popular project has never gone beyond the preliminary phase there is a general idea of what that equipment could be A public participation site was launched and an environmental impact study was conducted which also went through a public consultation phase But for there to be a Feira Popular (scheduled for 2020) there would first have to be an Urban Park where the future amusement park would be integrated; and as for the latter.. the works progressed very slowly over the years and the different deadlines were missed The opening to the public of the Urban Park was scheduled for 2018 but we'll get to that in detail in a moment Let's start with Moedas' statements that reignited the Feira Popular issue: in an interview the mayor said he wants to give up the Feira Popular and just make the Green Park but the left-wing opposition criticizes the decision and wants the Feira anyway - even if it's in another location It was in an interview to Rádio RenascençaOn the sidelines of this weekend's PSD Congress Carlos Moedas clarified his position regarding the Feira Popular: "The concept of the Feira Popular today no longer makes the same sense as it did 20 or 30 years ago We have to rethink that concept"said the current Mayor of Lisbon mentioning that he wants to look at the project as "really the New People's Fair" "makes a lot more sense" create there "a green park with equipment for people" than an amusement park that "Those kinds of amusement parks in the city center don't make the same sense that they did in the past We can have a part of the park with some equipment for that kind of amusement That's not going to happen."explained Carlos Moedas to Renascença "Those kinds of companies are not looking at the city centers We have to look at the needs of the population and I think what the population would like to have is equipment for children Already this Wednesday, July 6th, Carlos Moedas referred to on the sidelines of a ceremony at the City Hall that "it's not a question here of giving up on the project it would disappear on its own"adding that "there is no one" interested in investing in the Feira Popular project in Carnide so the previous executive "never did anything about it" not even a demand for these kinds of amusement parks within cities we are not even in a scenario where there is demand with promoters who want to do this kind of thing"he said Moedas also said that has "there were problems with the foreman" e "some technical problems"but assured that "the state of play is to really start cleaning up the land which is not in condition and cannot be in that condition and then really think about this equipment project for that part of town At the site of the future Feira Popular, where a political ceremony and some demolition work took place, Medina pointed out that the return of this social equipment intended settle the debt "that the city has since 2004 to hundreds of thousands of youth grandparents and family members"nicknaming that day "historic for the city"for marking the "the beginning of the return of Feira to Lisbon and to the people of Lisbon". The then mayor criticized the "bad decisions" that led the city to go more than a decade without "your People's Fair" and pointed out that the new infrastructure would not be "an amusement park of some multinational just like so many others"Nor is it the same as the old Feira Popular - the idea was to reinvent the concept with entertainment more attractive" than those of Entrecampos what traditional entertainments they would like to have again (Ferris wheel horror house...) and what new valences they wanted the new Fair to have (street food) the project was summarized this way: "high quality and accessible urban green park; connection to the history and memory of Feira Popular de Lisboa but a project of quality and modernity; objective of rehabilitation of the entire area and surroundings; project with equipment and attractions for families and for adventure and adrenaline lovers; approximately 20 hectares of land (4 x larger than the previous Feira Popular in Entrecampos)" despite being the big highlight in terms of communication the construction of the Feira Popular was not the big priority the new amusement park would not be ready yet only the 20-hectare Urban Park in which the Feira Popular would be integrated The local authority's idea was to grant the Fair to a private entity that would manage it and also the entire Urban Park (which has already had several names: from "Parque Verde da Feira Popular de Lisboa" to "Parque Urbano da Pontinha" or only a green area annexed to the Padre Cruz Neighborhood and meanwhile baptized as "Jardim dos Professores" (Teachers' Garden) would remain A 2018 video from the Lisbon City Council showed the state of the works that year: which does not differ much from the situation that Lisboa Para Pessoas was able to observe this week "Right now what exists is a handful of nothing and still without much involvement from the people who live here who study here and who work here"commented at the time the President of the Carnide Parish Council The statements of the person in charge of the parish where the Feira Popular and respective Urban Park would be inserted are not much different from those he has now made to the Lusa news agency after Carlos Moedas' position was made public "I'm obviously not opposed to the construction of the green park and then if it comes accompanied by equipment for the population's enjoyment obviously I'm not opposed to any of that"he told Lusa the important thing is that the land where it has taken a while for something to be born will be an opportunity for development for the parish and with real benefits for the people who live nearby "That was even the position that I conveyed to the Mayor I said that we were not here to complicate things we saw it as a great opportunity for the development of the parish what we want is that [any] project for that territory be a great opportunity for local development." the President of the Carnide Council also showed concern with the current situation of the land for the future Urban Park next to a giant amount of trees that have been planted - and rightly so - but that we're not sure how often to water."The construction work has been suspended for about a year and the contractor left several boxes of flammable materials on the ground Fábio Sousa also said that the council cannot take the initiative to intervene in the space but it has already told the council that it wants to "be part of the solution"The company has a team of gardeners or even vacation occupation programs for young people The coalition program New TimesCarlos Moedas, with whom he became president of the Lisbon City Hall, was not clear about the future of Feira Popular. O document spoke only in "transform the current Feira Popular project to provide for a new Urban Park"which was already the project underway (as mentioned the Feira Popular would be integrated into this Urban Park) that the will was to equip this Urban Park with "leisure and sports facilities natural outdoor swimming pool in Carnide"and with "cultural facilities" The public tender for the Feira Popular was never launched so it was never clear what it would look like in concrete terms it was decided not to specify what this equipment would be like leaving it up to the future concessionaire The contributions of the population through the aforementioned website could be incorporated into this detailed definition of the Fair The concessionaire would be responsible for all the construction costs of the Fair; the Lisbon City Hall would only leave the Urban Park ready for the installation of the amusement park in an area not exceeding 61 thousand square meters intends to develop the Feira Popular project under a public works concession The concessionaire will be selected through a public tender and will be responsible for the conception maintenance and operation of Feira Popular de Lisboa Given the complete integration of Feira Popular into the Green Park the concessionaire will also assume responsibility for its operation and maintenance seeking to maintain its role as a green infrastructure." "Feira Popular de Lisboa shall be equipped and characterized so as to have the capacity to receive at least 1,300,000 visitors annually privileging a high level of technological integration with an adequate dimensioning at the level of internal routes restaurant spaces and informal leisure areas and the offer of attractions in which at least one attraction classifiable as an Anchor Attraction shall stand out." O Environmental Impact Study of Feira Popular de Lisboa was in public consultation on the Participa website between December 2019 and January of the following year with this process being concluded in April 2020 In one of the documents made available to the population it was read that besides Carnide two other options were considered: one at Poço do Bispo Docks an option discarded because the Port of Lisbon Administration "has not shown any willingness with the Municipality to release the area necessary for the realization of the project"and another in the northern part of Parque das Nações which "has proven inadequate on a technical and financial level due to the expenses required for soil decontamination since the former landfill of Beirolas was installed there and also due to the absence of essential infrastructure such as public transportation network and the subway station" a tariff proposal for the new Feira was also presented: a fixed price of 2.50 euros for access to the fairground within the Urban Park with special conditions for children under three years old a total revenue of 33 million Euros was expected and the creation of about 600 new direct jobs with the new Feira Popular de Lisboa it was estimated between 1.3 million ("conservative scenario based on the last year of operation of Feira Popular in Entrecampos") and 2.5 million much more than the Zoo (one million) or the Oceanarium (1.4 million) You can consult the essential documentation here: The conclusion of the Environmental Impact Study of Feira Popular de Lisboa was essential for the launching of the public tender that would allow to find the concessionaire and contractor who would realize the future Fair in the Urban Park that the Chamber would meanwhile finish the Neighbourhood Association of Bairro Novo de Carnide and Quinta do Bom Nome had been invited by the previous mayor together with the Neighbourhood Association of Bairro Padre Cruz to be part of a committee to monitor the project of the future Feira Popular one after the presentation in 2015 and the last one in 2017 because no contracts were signed"said Carlos Durão referring to the balance of these two meetings THE Associação de Moradores do Bairro Padre Cruz was not available to talk to Lusa and BE have already reacted to Carlos Moedas' statements The completion of the Urban Park and the subsequent creation of the Feira Popular would create a new centrality in Pontinhawhich today is already one of the city's main public transport interfaces - the arrival point of several suburban bus lines the transit point of several Carris lines and also an entry point to the Lisbon Metro network The entire area was redeveloped between 2017 and 2018 with that intermodal future in mind one of the largest parking lots in the city with a deterrent function is also planned - around 1,800 spaces are planned near the Metro station Pontinha awaits the construction of this park that will complete the public space intervention already carried out at the site and that is on EMEL's calendar for 2025 - two pedestrian bridges are planned to connect the park directly to the Metro square and the Urban Park MB Way: 933 140 217 (indicar “LPP”) Ou clica aqui Podes escrever-nos para [email protected] O LPP / Lisbon For People é um jornal local dedicado à cidade e à área metropolitana de Lisboa editado de forma totalmente independente e sem fins lucrativos ' + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.webview_notification_text + ' " + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_title + " " + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_text + " Every Saturday in Funchal’s Old Town the Feira das Velharias e Antiguidades (antique and old items fair) You can find at this fair a little of everything From Jornal Madeira What happened to the very popular car boot market next to the Casino once a month … Apparently the Casino pulled the plug on that a few years ago , I’ve had a stall on the Saturday market for the last year and a half and a lot of the older traders used to do the Casino one as well , there’s also a flea market/car boot in Santa Luzia park and on the car park outside every Sunday except for the first Sunday of the month … Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email We take no responsibility for the accuracy of the translation 2014The Japanese auto parts company Yazaki plans to close its factory in Feira de Santana both affiliated to IndustriALL Global Union are campaigning to halt the closure and save the jobs of the factory’s 1,200 workers Union leaders met Bahia Institutional Relations Department (SERIN) officials on 26 June to ask the state government to mediate agreed to explore the possibility of saving the jobs and to open talks with representatives of the company the workers and the departments of trade and industry (SICM) and labour and employment (SETRE) Representatives of the union and the company met the Bahian Regional Superintendent of the Ministry of Labour and Employment on 30 June in Salvador said that the company wants to close the factory at the end of July The company says it will not change its plans and wants to dismiss 400 workers at the end of this week so the union has strengthened the campaign against the plant closure also attended the meeting on 30 June and said it was necessary to seek support from local and international organisations where the company plans to relocate and ask IndustriALL Global Union to raise the issue with the company’s head office in Japan We are talking about the fate of 1,200 families This could also have a major impact on the local economy" CNM/CUT president said: “The metalworkers in Feira de Santana can count on the CNM/CUT’s support in this fight We cannot leave 1,200 workers without support It is a blow to the economy and the labour market We are in solidarity with the metalworkers at Yazaki and with the struggle of the Feira de Santana union and we are going to fight alongside them to get Yazaki to take responsibility for the situation and ensure the plant does not close" IndustriALL Global Union is following the situation closely and is ready to act in solidarity with the local union to defend the jobs of more than 1,000 workers in the auto industry IndustriALL Global Union’s affiliates represent over 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining We take up the fight for better working conditions and trade union rights around the world © Copyright 2018 -
