Five thousand firefighters are struggling to contain wildfires raging across northern Portugal
The fires have been blamed for killing three people and forcing an unknown number of residents to flee their homes
Some 100 fires reported by national authorities stretched the firefighting brigades
Authorities have yet to give figures on how many people have had to evacuate and how many homes have been lost
Portuguese state broadcaster RTP showed images of houses burnt to the ground and smoke billowing over charred terrain in the area of Castro de Aire
One civilian has died from burns and another from cardiac arrest from the fires that broke out over the weekend
Among the hardest hit areas is the district of Aveiro
where a firefighter died from an unspecified illness while on duty
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said on Monday that the firefighter was “victim of a sudden illness” and offered his condolences to his family
Ground units were supported by Portuguese water dumping aircraft. Fellow European Union members Spain, France Italy and Greece have committed to providing eight more planes to help local forces
“The EU stands with Portugal as it battles major wildfires,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a message on X
televised images showed some residents wielding tree branches and buckets of water to try to save their homes from encroaching fires
With no rain to relieve in the situation in sight
national authorities prolonged an alert for fires until Thursday
The measure included a ban on farmers using heavy machinery to harvest crops because of the risk of sparks that could start more fires
Portugal was devasted by massive fires in 2017 that killed over 120 people and burned over half a million hectares
The dry and hot conditions behind the outbreaks in Portugal came while downpours caused flooding in central Europe
The death toll from the severe floods, which began over the weekend, rose to at least 19 on Tuesday, with seven confirmed fatalities in Romania. Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic were also among the hardest hit.

Palaeopteridium andrenelii is the second representative of the Noeggerathiales to be discovered in the Portuguese Carboniferous
following the description of the Noeggerathialean Rhacopteris gomesiana by the geologist Carlos Teixeira in the 1940s in the Douro Carboniferous Basin
Fossils of plants from the extinct Noeggerathiales are rare in Europe and America
primarily due to their distinctive ecological traits
they lived in different habitats and generally did not fossilise alongside the typical plants of the Carboniferous fossil record
this new species confirms what was already known: the palaeobotanical record of the Portuguese Carboniferous exhibits a high degree of endemism of international relevance," concludes Carlos Góis-Marques
The new species is dedicated to André Nel of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris
a world-renowned expert in palaeoentomology
who collaborated with Portuguese palaeontologists on the taxonomic study of new insect fossils recently discovered in the Douro and Buçaco Carboniferous basins
The scientific article, "Palaeopteridium andrenelii sp. nov., a new Noeggerathialean species from the Middle Pennsylvanian of Portugal with new insights on the Noeggerathiales," is available here

Scientists have said human-caused climate breakdown is supercharging extreme weather across the world, driving more frequent and more deadly disasters, from floods – as seen this week in central Europe – to heatwaves
Human-caused climate breakdown is making heatwaves more likely and more intense, with some – such as the extreme heatwave in western Canada and the US in 2021 – all but impossible without global heating

portuguese studio MUTANT architecture & design presents its TILT house, built in the residential neighborhood of gondomar just east of porto. the organization of the dwelling is informed by its site
which is defined by a slight slope and its close proximity to the street and neighboring houses
the team tells designboom that this condition ‘promoted the possibility of deploying the house at an intermediate level and thus strategically separating the pedestrian access from the car access.’

with its TILT house, the team at MUTANT architecture & design (see more here) experiments with angled geometries
the volume was generated through the action of ’tilting,’ or rotating a preliminary shape along three-axes
the resulting tilted space — the primary volume — hosts the social areas of the dwelling
the design team continues: ‘this movement made it possible to define the main entrance and
enhance the space destined for the pool patio
giving it privacy in relation to avenida miguel bombarda
characterized by a greater influx of traffic
this movement also adds a dynamic change to the ceiling height of the home
enhancing the area destined for the living room.’
in defining the program across the rest of the TILT house
MUTANT architecture looked to the movements of the sun
away from the road and look out toward a private garden
the kitchen is nestled in the center of the house
serving as a nexus between the scattered private spaces
this centralized room further benefits from views of the property in each direction along with natural sunlight from the east

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
Eight communities in Northern Portugal are benefiting from increased access to convenient
door-to-door recycling collection and other related services
The aim was to get more people to recycle by making it convient for residents
This project reduced the distance between the recycling collection bins and the citizen
thus improving the separation and collection network offered to the population
The project expanded recycling services in eight municipalities: Espinho
Door-to-door collection to households and businesses was increased and more bins were made available in public places
Backed by a robust awareness-building campaign
the project succeeded in collecting 3 800 tonnes of recyclable materials – four times more than what was expected
the project expanded door-to-door household recycling collection to include an additional 12 450 homes
Each home received either a 40 litre or 140 litre container for collecting mixed waste recycling (paper
Some communities offered additional bins for biowaste collection
The project provided door-to-door collection services to nearly 600 businesses and other establishments
in addition to adding 212 more street bins to the region’s network
The project added 11 state-of-the-art collection vehicles to the current fleet and built a new recycling centre in Póvoa de Varzim
The initiative was backed by a multi-faceted communications campaign that aimed to not only raise awareness about the project
but also motivate citizens and businesses to participate
Project coordinators believe the campaign reached nearly 1 million people.
each recycling bin given to a home or business was equipped with a portable ultra-high frequency (UHF) Radio-Frequency ID (RFID) reader that
when used with an application developed by the project
allows authorities to track whose bin belongs to whom
All collection trucks were outfitted with a UHF RFID that
in conjunction with the readers embedded in the bins
allowed for monitoring of participation in the project and adjustment of awareness-raising efforts
it achieved a significant increase in the amount of recyclable materials collected (3 800 tonnes)
It reduced the amount of recyclables in the mixed waste stream from 32.5 % in 2017 to 29.4 % in 2019
As this is the equivalent of 12 000 tonnes of recyclable material being kept out of the community’s energy recovery plant
the project contributed to the reduction of waste management company LIPOR’s greenhouse gas emissions
Total investment for the project “Recycling is to Give More - Door to Door and Proximity Selective Collection” is EUR 3 874 646
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 3 239 707 through the “Sustainability and Resource Use Efficiency” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Environment Protection and promotion of resource efficiency”

Intermunicipal Waste Management of Greater Porto (LIPOR)
the absence of urban planning with the subsequent proliferation of disorderly constructions has left a chaotic context of scarce aesthetic value
the faraway outline of the city and the proximity of the sea have managed to keep the area’s charm alive
the owners had no doubts concerning the purchase of a plot on the outskirts
next to a road and aware of the potential that the site had
The project for the house started from very clear premises and incidentally closely related with the name of the place: Ribeira de Abade
It was necessary to carry out an exercise of isolation and abstraction
focussing on the complex topography and on the relationship with the water and the views through a design able to make the immediate context disappear practically
with a thirteen meter drop from the uppermost point and the street in the lowermost area
encouraged to place a series of platforms to carry out everyday activities both inside and outside
Retaining walls serve at once to enclose and to define the dwelling
These are complemented with walls parallel and perpendicular to the slope
The areas are organized into hierarchies that generate spaces of different nature
The social area is on ground floor in an elongated volumes that reaches 43 meters that run parallel to the views
the upper floor houses the more private spaces and is housed in a piece perpendicular to the slope that stretches over the landscape with a five meter projection
as if it wished to seek independence and capture the views
This cantilevering volume accommodates the main bedrooms
leaving the two guestrooms in the upper part of the house
This piece also acts as a ‘visor’ that frames the views and provides shade to protect the rooms in the lower part of the dwelling from the harsh western sun

This high-performance center for rowers is located close to the Douro River
an area abounding in archaeological sites and engaged primarily in growing wine grapes
This is a zone with an exceptional landscape characterized by the contrast between steep terraces (called socalcos and occupied by vineyards) and rural constructions
Taking advantage of the clear delimitation between parts of the program – on one hand the rest areas
and on the other hand the public zones and the actual rowing facilities – the building takes inspiration from the same chromatic and material contrast suggested by the landscape
the rooms for use by rowers are arranged in half-buried rows which follow the curves of the terrain
and while on the outside they imitate the surroundings through earthy tones
on the inside they evoke their telluric character in the unfaced concrete finishes of the walls
tenuously illuminated through skylights which poetically make the sky visible from the beds
the community and sport areas are grouped in a series of immaculate white volumes of diverse shapes
which are connected by a narrow circulation spine whose faceted volume snakes along the terrain picturesquely

Liam Scales during the Ireland training session at Estadio de Sao Miguel in Gondomar
Aidan FitzmauriceTue 11 Jun 2024 at 00:00He came through his first full season at Celtic with flying colours and two medals to show for it
And tomorrow Liam Scales will face another big test
in a potential showdown with Cristiano Ronaldo
Having come off the bench in last week’s win over Hungary and delivering an effective 45-minute display
the Wicklow native should start against Portugal in Aveiro
the sold-out crowd of 32,000 will hope to see world football’s most famous No 7 doing what he does best
After being rested for Portugal’s last two friendlies
and also adeus for Ronaldo and his country as tonight could be his final match on home soil
you can say at the end of your career that you played against him,” says Scales
one of the photographers gets a photo of me standing next to him
but to feel it by playing against him would be great
“He is probably the best goal-scorer of all time
He can still score goals and we will have to be completely ready for him at his best.”
While some players came into the Ireland camp with confidence battered by club issues
with a medal from the Old Firm Scottish Cup final tucked away in his bag to go with his newly minted league medal
“I had a few days in between the cup final and the camp
I just want to go into next year and have the same sort of season
It was a great step to cement myself in the team at Celtic,” he says
the atmosphere at the stadium with the 50/50 split
Once the game started you lose focus on [things] outside the pitch and to win it the way we did as well
but to win in the last minute was brilliant
It was fitting that compatriot Adam Idah scored the only goal of the game
giving him a nice finish to a testing season
as he was doubted by many Celtic fans when he arrived on loan
Scales took time to win over the support and the manager at Parkhead
so he’s aware of how tough that can be at a club like Celtic
you know that you are constantly under scrutiny
And it's a good way to be as it drives us as players
but once you accept that's the way the fans are
Because I had the first season where I played a few times
so I knew from the start of this season that this is what it would be like and it didn't affect me at all,” Scales says
“That's the case with Celtic fans a lot of the time
they just have this high standard and I don't think it bothered Adam
He is just that sort of character that if it goes well and he starts like he did
Portugal v Ireland: John O'Shea and Josh Cullen press conference
“It's a testament to his character that he was able to do that and go and have the half-season he did
He played a massive part in us winning the league and then scoring the winner in the cup final
Rangers were favourites to win the league and the media jumped on it
"The manager was always focused on us and how we approached winning the league rather than listening to what people outside were saying.”
With a win banked from Ireland’s last game against Hungary
Scales says he’s happy to focus on the outcome more than the performance
People will remember that we got a last-minute winner
they will remember the goal and the celebrations in the stadium
They won't really remember what the game was like
"The last memory people will have is the winner and the game is about winning
