However, thoughts have already turned to the next vital game, as Eddie Howe's side host rivals Chelsea on May 11 in a season defining fixture at St James' Park.
Both clubs are level on 63 points, with three games left to fight for UCL qualification.
With plenty at stake, Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes wasted no time in getting the Geordie faithful fired up for the match.
"An important point given the circumstances," he wrote on Instagram. "We keep pushing toward our goal. Your support will be vital next Sunday - let's create an unforgettable atmosphere. Howay the lads!"
Newcastle's fourth place position is just about secure on goal difference - but Chelsea's win over weakened Liverpool team only made things more complicated - and fifth place can still seal a spot in Europe's top competition next season

Newcastle's recent home record against Chelsea provides plenty of encouragement, but the significance of the match has elevated pressure level on Tyneside to fever pitch.
Newcastle have been rock solid against Chelsea at St James' Park recently, winning three times, and losing just once in their last four home meetings
"We play Chelsea next week, so that game will be all we focus on now," Howe said.
"I've said many times, I think that's all you can ask for, that it's in your hands and you're not reliant on other teams and looking elsewhere.
"The focus has to be on ourselves, we know what we need to do. We've got three really tough games, I have to say that. They're not going to be easy, but they're games to relish and enjoy. We always enjoy the challenges that await us and we try to give our best."

Guimaraes pledged his loyalty to Newcastle in the summer and his faith in the Magpies’ project was rewarded as he captained the club to winning the Carabao Cup earlier this season
However, Manchester City felt they could sign Guimaraes but opted away from making a move to secure the Brazilian international’s services as they anticipated being quoted a hefty price tag
In hindsight, the Newcastle skipper would have especially helped Manchester City and Pep Guardiola this campaign to adapt after Rodri suffered an ACL injury
But City lived and died by their decision not to sign Bruno Guimaraes
who has proven once again this season that he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League
However, Guimaraes opened up on having a private conversation with Pep Guardiola
Guimaraes admitted that the chat was not centered around any potential move to Manchester City and merely a general discussion between himself and Guardiola
The 27-year-old told FourFourTwo: I’ve spoken with him but nothing about a potential move.”
Guimaraes claimed that Pep Guardiola has changed football and in his eyes
the Catalan is the greatest manager of all time: “He has said some nice things about my game.”

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed Manchester City could try and sign Guimaraes even if they do not intend to sign a central midfielder is he is made available by Newcastle
Bailey claimed in March: “As with Alexander Isak
it means they become club legends but it does not guarantee they stay
that is down to a top five finish and Champions League action
You can’t expect players of the calibre of Isak or Bruno to not be playing in the Champions League and Newcastle know that
The one thing with Bruno that Isak doesn’t have is a release clause and we know Pep loves him
“I am not convinced we’ll see another central defensive midfield come in at City after the signing of Nico
then I envisage City making a play for him in some manner.”

PEP GUARDIOLA PRESS CONFERENCE REACTION | Man City vs Brentford
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has confirmed he has held conversations with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after an impressive season for the Brazilian midfielder at St
Guimaraes has established himself as one of the most exciting midfielders in England since joining hands with Eddie Howe at Tyneside in what have been a breakthrough few seasons for the Magpies as they again seek a strong finish to the Premier League campaign and push to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League
The 27-year-old has often attracted interest from the best clubs in England and after another impressive year in the north-east
many have tagged Guimaraes as an ideal candidate to bolster Manchester City’s midfield in the summer transfer window
City have a busy few months ahead as they undergo a major squad revamp to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League next term whilst trying to replace Kevin De Bruyne
who will be leaving the 2023 treble winners at the end of the season
Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is understood to be heading Manchester City’s preferred list of signings for the upcoming transfer window
with the 21-year-old German believed to be impressed by Guardiola’s personal overtures in luring him to the Etihad Stadium
City will also step up their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White in the coming weeks as a deal remains to be struck with the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final opponents
who have set a staggering £100 million price tag on the England international
Speaking to Four Four Two, Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has revealed he has spoken with Guardiola as the 54-year-old hunts for potent additions to his ageing midfield ahead of the summer transfer window to challenge on all fronts next term.
“I’ve spoken with him (Guardiola), but nothing about a potential move (to Manchester City). He has said some nice things about my game, and I am very humbled by that because he is the best coach I’ve ever seen – I admire how he has impacted football,” said Guimaraes.
As the season comes to a close and Guimaraes enters the final three years of his current deal at St. James’ Park, it remains unlikely that Manchester City or any other Premier League club can tempt the midfielder away from Tyneside.
“I’m very much at home and living a dream. For me to leave, it must be something great for the club, not for me. I don’t worry about it – I trust the club and my agents. I’m so happy here and I want to stay,” Guimaraes added.
City are planning to make four to five impactful first-team signings come the end of the season and that can be either side of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States, with the Premier League allowing Manchester City to make and register new signings for a 10-day period between June 1-10 before they fly off to the United States.

Strange to think of it now but this time last year
senior people at Newcastle United were referring to Bruno Guimaraes in the past tense
The team had just lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup — one shot on target
28 per cent possession — and the 7,800 fans who travelled to the Etihad Stadium sang: “We’re gonna win f*** all again”
which was indisputable; 69 years without a domestic trophy was now destined to become 70
It was an existential wobble and the tremors were felt internally
Newcastle were already deep into added time
who joined Newcastle from Lyon for £40million ($51.7m) in January 2022
had never pushed to leave and nobody was attempting to push him out
honest conversation the previous summer about him seeing out the club’s return to the Champions League
The £100m ($129m) escape clause in his contract loomed over everything
the likelihood of Guimaraes remaining at St James’ Park shrivelled further
Newcastle were hurtling towards a reckoning in terms of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR)
and with the club desperate to build around Alexander Isak
Guimaraes became their most likely departure
One leading figure speculated in private about him joining City or Paris Saint-Germain
is forever enshrined in Newcastle’s history
instant legends after their 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley a little over a week ago
He is the man who finally allows Bob Moncur to lay down his 56-year burden as the club’s last captain to raise a significant piece of silverware
He is the team’s heartbeat and tempo-setter
which was never more apparent than eight days ago
If Dan Burn’s goal and elevation to the England squad became the individual story of the weekend and Isak’s goal carried a tang of inevitability — so good
so unstoppable — then Newcastle’s midfield felt like the crux of it
They played like warriors and both Guimaraes and Joelinton
He spoke about receiving a text message from Alan Shearer
that morning which read: “Bring that trophy back to the Toon please skipper” followed by a series of black and white hearts
Guimaraes told reporters: “When you taste it once
we were in a different moment but I always said I would like to put my name in the club’s history
it is worth marking just what a leap of faith was required from Guimaraes to make that big step a possibility
Of all the players who arrived in that first transfer window post-takeover — the others were Burn
Chris Wood and Matt Targett — he was the one who pointed to a shimmering future
Another strange thought (everything feels strange in the context of Newcastle’s identity as serial non-winners finally being banished): this season has brought episodes of real struggle for Guimaraes
It was this which partially informed Howe’s decision to name Guimaraes captain ahead of the first match of this season
he did not feel like a natural choice in the traditional sense; he is not a shouter
It said more about appeasement and his prominence
When he was booked in the 3-2 league defeat by City in January last year
it was his sixth yellow card in as many matches in all competitions
It left him one more away from a two-game suspension in the Premier League
Guimaraes promised there would not be another
but the 27-year-old was good on his promise
demonstrating that he could play with maturity
Newcastle’s established leadership group, in which Guimaraes did not figure, was also changing. Matt Ritchie left on a free transfer last summer
and Callum Wilson were injured and no longer mainstays and Trippier had been usurped as first-choice right-back by Tino Livramento
Burn was the only member of the group to accompany the squad on their pre-season tour to Japan and quipped “it’s a bit lonely” before one of their matches there
Promotion to the captaincy brought a positive response from Guimaraes. “Another dream came true, to be captain here where I am loved and love to be… there are many ways to be a leader,” he said but it was not without ramifications. Now it was Trippier’s turn to feel hurt, albeit he had been open to leaving Newcastle
There was a general note of disquiet throughout the dressing room
Gordon felt it after the Liverpool move fell through
Sean Longstaff spoke to journalists about everybody feeling like they “had their price”
“It wasn’t easy for Bruno,” someone close to the dressing room says
speaking anonymously to protect relationships
The fact he could barely win a coin toss at St James’ became a joke
although it meant Newcastle would be turned around and face playing uphill in the second half
There have been episodes when he has looked fatigued
which is hardly surprising when last summer brought six appearances for Brazil
both in the Copa America and in preceding friendlies
He has played more minutes for Newcastle in the Premier League than anybody else
Availability is one of his great strengths and it is just as well when you consider that since his first start
the team has not won a league game without him
When Tonali returned from his long suspension for betting offences in late August
a big question — asked regularly of Howe — was whether he and Guimaraes could play together
and when Tonali was moved into a deeper holding role
it was the Italian who suddenly looked like the irreplaceable one
inconsistent start to the season had included a miserable 3-1 defeat at Fulham
NUFC Kobe: “Bruno is the most overrated player in our history.”
NUFCTony: “Is Bruno the right captain for the team?”
there has been a shift in team dynamic since the captaincy has changed and I don’t think it done us any favours.”
Anonymous performances — Guimaraes was not alone — against mid-ranking teams became entrenched as a theme and
that expanded to games against both City and Liverpool in the Premier League
was scathing about Guimaraes on BBC Newcastle
“There were times when he looked like he couldn’t run
He was chasing shadows at times — (Ibrahima) Konate strolled past him as if he wasn’t there
The words were harsh but the logic was not unreasonable
Howe was asked about resting Guimaraes and about how much he was suffering physically
“It’s difficult because I’m sure if you asked Bruno
he would say he doesn’t need a rest,” he said
“It is up to us to look at his schedule and try and find ways to do that
We have tried but he’s such an important player
we have turned to him more often than we would ideally want to because of his strengths and qualities.”
He is an outstanding player and will continue to be
We just need to help him in those moments where we can keep him fresh and get him to his best levels.”
then it shouldn’t because it is absolutely born of love and sometimes
and Guimaraes has been required to grit his teeth and battle through
There may have been matches where he has laboured or failed to make an impact
but he has always — always — sought the ball and sought prominence
After Newcastle’s 1-0 victory against West Ham United on March 10
crucial for momentum and confidence after a difficult spell
he told Sky Sports that the Carabao Cup final was “like the World Cup”
While much of the club’s preparations were about making sure the team (and fans) would peak at Wembley
he made no attempt to play down its significance
especially in and around the final,” the dressing-room figure says
“He has become more vocal in the group setting and I sense the players now look at him as the leader
Newcastle roared and Guimaraes drove them on
he could be seen beckoning to his left and then suddenly
who has not played a second of football this season because of an ACL injury
holding it aloft with both him and Trippier
It was a big little moment nestling within the biggest moment of all
“It is easy to be selfish when things like that are happening but Bruno thought of others,” says the aforementioned dressing-room figure
Something a bit less strange: nobody at Newcastle is talking about Guimaraes in the past tense now
Who knows what might happen in the summer and how much might depend on securing a place in the Champions League
but their PSR position is much stronger and his contract stretches until 2028
They are already guaranteed a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League and have shown they can win trophies
he will be spoken of as Moncur’s successor
as the man who believed when nobody believed
a leader by example and a leader full stop
who looked to involve and celebrate others at the precise moment when the world was looking at him

Newcastle, who last tasted domestic glory when they won the FA Cup in 1955, took the lead in the first half when centre back Dan Burn buried a header into the back of the net and doubled their advantage through striker Alexander Isak after the break
"It's all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history," Brazil midfielder Guimaraes said
"We can now say we are the champions again..

Burn put Newcastle ahead in the 45th minute with a bullet header. The Newcastle centre back pulled away to the far post and craned his neck to head the ball down into the turf and past the despairing dive of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher
Newcastle then had an Isak effort disallowed by VAR for offside but it was only moments before the striker got his goal, pouncing on a Jacob Murphy knock-down and firing into the back of the net in the 52nd minute
Liverpool flickered into life late in the game and Federico Chiesa scored to give them a barely deserved lifeline in stoppage time but Eddie Howe's Newcastle side held on
Games against Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea remain, and Guimaraes took to Instagram after the game to send a message to fans who he thinks are needed to raise the team’s performances in the final fixtures

Defender Dan Burn also spoke after the game about the fans and the need for them to back the side who are so close to being back in Europe’s elite competition
especially when the fans are behind us creating that really good atmosphere
so we're confident going into them."

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has commented on his future at the club after a conversation with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola
Rumours around the Brazilian’s future on Tyneside circulated last summer after it was revealed that Bruno Guimaraes had a £100m release clause in a new contract he signed in October 2023
There were fears that Manchester City would activate Guimaraes’ release clause
and his release clause expired in summer 2024
Guimaraes was named Newcastle United captain at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign by Eddie Howe after a request from the midfielder to be more involved in proceedings within the team
Guimaraes has guided the Magpies to their first domestic trophy in 70 years and are nearing a return to the Champions League
It was recently revealed that Guimaraes’ dad accidentally told Newcastle fans he was leaving
There is no denying just how much Guimaraes loves Newcastle and the fanbase
He has completely embraced the culture on Tyneside and is reaping the benefits from it
Guimaraes wants to win more trophies with Newcastle after their historic Carabao Cup win
The 27-year-old even believes the Magpies will win the Premier League in the near future
That statement alone is a sign that he is willing to stay for the long term, but in a recent interview with FourFourTwo
Guimaraes made it crystal clear that he does not want to leave Newcastle
“I don’t worry about it – I trust the club and my agents
Man City boss Pep Guardiola went on a big spending spree in the last transfer window
signing the likes of Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush
Guardiola also signed Newcastle target Abdukodir Khusanov
who looked set for a move to Tyneside before PSR issues hindered the deal
Guardiola has praised Guimaraes publicly in the past
claiming that the midfielder has been playing at a ‘high level’ for the last four years
Last summer, Man City bid £70m for Guimaraes
which was deemed to be nowhere near the required fee to take him away from the club
While Guimaraes is set to stay at Newcastle
he could not help but show his admiration for the Spaniard in the same FourFourTwo interview
but nothing about a potential move,” Guimaraes said
“He has said some nice things about my game
and I am very humbled by that because he is the best coach I’ve ever seen – I admire how he has impacted football.”
The failure to land Guimaraes could still come back to haunt Man City this season
with the Champions League race still wide open
one of Newcastle United’s key players and a regular with the Brazilian national team
recently weighed in on one of football’s most hotly debated questions: Who is the greatest player of all time
Bruno has become a cornerstone for Newcastle
recently playing a key role in helping the club win the 2025 Carabao Cup — their first major trophy in decades
He has also earned 33 caps for Brazil and is on track to be a key figure at the 2026 World Cup
Despite sharing several Brazil camps with Neymar and going head-to-head with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at club level
Guimarães believes the Argentine's career stands above the rest
Messi continues to be the benchmark for many of today’s top players
Cristiano Ronaldo is still going strong at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia at the age of 40
No Brazilian has won more caps than Guimaraes since the World Cup
The Brazilian has given full credit to Newcastle United’s manager for the club’s win over Liverpool at Wembley in March
as he became the first Newcastle United captain to lift a domestic trophy in 70 years this March
But he is keen to stress that it was his manager’s fearlessness that got the club over the line vs Liverpool at Wembley
he has introduced ‘The Timeline’.Once a month
a draw takes place at the training ground with one player chosen to prepare a presentation about their life
their playing career and personal experiences with the idea that if players get to know each other's stories in detail they will be more comfortable around each other and perform better.“I love that activity,” admits Guimaraes
“We have one month to prepare the presentation
create what you want to share with the squad and how you want to share it
“I talked about my parents and my kids
and I was humbled by the opportunity to show them my life story
I’m so proud of that.“I started my presentation by talking about my grandfather
who moved to Brazil from Spain as a refugee – it took him 45 days to cross the Atlantic.”Interestingly
Guimaraes’ grandfather made ends meet as a fisherman and
fishing is one of his grandson’s favourite hobbies
with a Newcastle staff member taking him to local rivers
I try to go fishing at least twice a week.”Sounds great
It’s in the family DNA!”Interview by Caio Carrieri

Saudi-owned Newcastle will return to London to face Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday
seeking its first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup
Eddie Howe’s men will doubtlessly need more penetration if they are to beat an in-form Liverpool
Newcastle rose three places into sixth in the Premier League but it was a lackluster performance in a stuffy encounter that provided few moments of excitement
The only goal came from Bruno Guimaraes in the 63rd minute
Harvey Barnes lofted a ball into the six-yard box and the Newcastle captain got the slightest of touches to take it past the goalkeeper
Guimaraes said all focus will turn to Wembley as Newcastle prepares for a potentially historic occasion
“It is massive for the club’s history and we want to be part of it,” the Brazilian said
“We know we’re going to play against one of the best teams
I believe our fans can make the difference for us
It is a long time for the fans without a trophy.”
lamented a loss that robbed it of its first hat trick of wins since December 2023
It sits 16th in the 20-team Premier League
and we’re disappointed with the goal,” Hammers boss Graham Potter said
“I felt for the players because they gave everything — not enough to win the game but enough to get something from it.”
It is difficult to argue with him. After all, he was the captain when Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup
The Magpies have ended their trophy drought, with Bruno Guimaraes playing a key role in bringing silverware to St James’ Park
Ever since his arrival from Lyon, Bruno said he wanted to be a champion with Newcastle United
but the midfielder is not going to settle for just one trophy
That is the message from the Newcastle United captain
who has been speaking to Sky Sports Premier League’s YouTube channel about beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final
“I said to the boys we go to the pitch as players and leave there as legends,” he said
We made the step that some good players did not achieve here
Shearer was the most famous player for the club
and unfortunately he did not win something for the club
but we are not just satisfied with the Carabao Cup
We want to finish in the top five to go back to the Champions League next season.”
Bruno is right. He and his teammates are Newcastle United legends
Eddie Howe is a Newcastle United legend too
There will come a time in the future when he gets a statue for what he has achieved on Tyneside
The Magpies’ next objective is qualifying for the Champions League
They are in a strong position to return to Europe’s elite competition with four Premier League games to go
Returning to the Champions League is vital for Newcastle
while it will encourage better players to move to St James’ Park
It will also convince Howe’s current stars to remain at St James’ Park
who was heavily linked with a move away last summer when his release clause was active
that clause was not activated and Bruno remained with Newcastle United
It remains to be seen if he will be the subject of interest this summer
but the skipper will be much more inclined to continue playing in black and white if the Magpies are a Champions League club
Football writer Adrian Clarke identifies the key players
team tactics and where the final fixture of Matchweek 32 could be won or lost
Is Guimaraes the strongest all-round central midfielder in the Premier League
it is hard to think of anyone who offers more varied excellence than Newcastle's outstanding captain
The Brazilian is enjoying another barnstorming season where he has been equally impactful in and out of possession - and the Magpies’ impressive surge towards a top-five finish owes plenty to the diversity of his skill set
No Premier League player has run further than Guimaraes this season
while he has won the most duels and fouls and is also joint-leader when it comes to serving up accurate through-balls
Guimaraes’ through-balls for Alexander Isak have been especially profitable in 2024/25
He is always looking to make a penetrative pass and set up a goal for leading marksman Isak against Liverpool with a precise distribution that sent him clear..
...and then in a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers
Last season, Guimaraes was often the deepest-lying midfielder in Eddie Howe’s starting line-up
but he has been used in a box-to-box role far more regularly in 2024/25
This has got him into better positions inside the final third
and although he is short of the 15 direct goal involvements he produced last season
his six assists and four goals are still creditable given how much else Guimaraes offers the side
When he is on the ball in the opposition half
Guimaraes has the talent to see - and execute - passes that unlock the door
Many modern-day creators also offer plenty without the ball
and Newcastle's skipper is very much in that camp
He has run further than any other player this season
and also ranks fifth for his 11.5km per 90 minutes (min 2,000 mins)
Guimaraes brings great energy to the team and is part of a highly industrious midfield unit that also boasts Joelinton and Sandro Tonali (12.1km per 90
The defensive action areas map below reflects the ground that he covers for Howe’s side
winning the ball back in all areas of the pitch
be abrasive in the mid-block or break up play in deeper parts of the field with equal effectiveness
On Wednesday evening at St James’ Park, he will encounter a Crystal Palace midfield that is also combative
Adam Wharton is the most comparable Eagles player
another excellent passer that also offers quality out of possession
When you compare some of their data for 2024/25 on a per 90-minute basis
the Palace midfielder sits comfortably in the company of players such as Guimaraes
While the Newcastle star edges most categories
and is clearly more of an attacking threat
The duo could be described as "box-to-box" players
and although Guimaraes covers a wider expanse of grass
the patterns on their respective season heat maps are remarkably similar
you can expect combat at close quarters from Wharton and Guimaraes in this midweek encounter
You don’t get many prolific ball-winners who also contribute a stack of goals and assists
This is why Guimaraes is so vital to his team
If you search for players who have produced at least 10 goal involvements AND have at least 150 ball recoveries to their name
Just two individuals pop up for 2024/25 - and they happen to both be Bruno - Guimaraes and Fernandes of Manchester United
Analysing the more creative side of the game
using categories that highlight great distribution
Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans is the only player outside of the two Bruno’s who can boast 150+ successful duels
40+ chances created and 600+ successful passes inside the opposition half
While Isak has deservedly been lavished with praise this season
you could easily argue that Guimaraes is at least of equal importance to Newcastle
He can attack and defend with equal quality and enthusiasm
while the energy and work-rate he supplies is also a valuable commodity within the starting XI
Guimaraes is a complete midfield maestro that takes Newcastle up a level with and without the ball
Michael Owen and Steve Cooper discuss the top-five race and who they think will be in the competition next season

we ran the latest edition of our subscriber-exclusive Ask Ornstein Q&A
The Athletic’s subscribers can ask me for my views on anything from the football world
I have pulled together some of my favourite questions and my answers are below
asked: “Are the reports true about Andrea Berta wanting Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi
is it true that Arsenal are going to have a £300million budget this summer?”
this is a personal opinion rather than sourced information but I don’t see Arsenal signing Zubimendi and Guimaraes
We know about the historical Guimaraes links but that ship seemed to have sailed
I’m not sure I can envisage Arsenal paying the kind of money Newcastle would ask for him (who
especially given that he turns 28 this year
Zubimendi is at a very advanced stage and the anticipation inside Arsenal is that he’s coming in. That deal would be a significant financial outlay, as would any move for a striker. There’s also other work to do — possible wide attacker, awaiting the decision of Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Halseth Nypan
one or two goalkeepers — and although there will be exits
I’m not sure recruiting Zubimendi and Guimaraes would be feasible even if Berta did want that (which I don’t know he does)
In terms of the £300million ($388m) reports
I’m not aware of a specific number but Arsenal recently posted healthy financial results
they’re expected to qualify for the Champions League again and they didn’t spend in the winter window
so there will definitely be room to manoeuvre
I’d expect it to be a pretty busy summer at the Emirates
asked: “Are there any left-backs Liverpool are looking at
Ornstein: They will have a shortlist of potential targets
Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain) and Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) were highly thought of at Anfield but both have signed new contracts
Kerkez remains a strong option and Bournemouth will be open to doing business if their financial expectations are met
but the price is likely to be above what Liverpool would normally pay for a full-back — plus they will have other options and Kerkez will have multiple suitors
They already have two top-level left-backs in Andy Robinson and Kostas Tsimikas
so you imagine one of them will need to go if another senior player is to arrive in that position
Fazeel N. asked: “With Geovany Quenda joining Chelsea after previously being linked with Manchester United
is that right wing-back position a priority for United in the summer
Do they have any targets or are they looking to move forward with Diogo Dalot
Ornstein: Despite where he played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP
17-year-old Quenda has mainly been used as a winger since the head coach joined United and that is where Chelsea intend to deploy him — on either side
So I’m not sure United would have been signing him as a right wing-back… but that’s all hypothetical now
United’s interest suggests they will be looking at other/similar opportunities on the market but that doesn’t guarantee they will do something
Mazraoui seems to be flourishing in that right-sided role
I expect United to make a handful of signings this summer and none of them are likely to stay with/be loaned back to their existing club in the way Quenda is going to be following this Chelsea deal
it perhaps wasn’t feasible for United in the end anyway
Dalot and Amad are also options… perhaps this position isn’t at the very top of their agenda
asked: “Is Luis Diaz looking to leave in the summer and are Liverpool targeting any left-wingers to replace him — and if yes
Ornstein: There is still no sign of a new contract
which is unusual for such a prominent player who has been at Anfield for as long as Diaz has
Barcelona have long been linked with him; their admiration is genuine
There was definitely something in the Manchester City reports last summer
but I don’t know if that will be revisited
They will naturally have several other options
asked: “Will we see some ‘unpopular’ sales from Arsenal this summer?”
Ornstein: If Arsenal are going to commit a lot of money on a striker
and the Zubimendi deal mentioned above gets done
It wouldn’t shock me to see a notable player depart this summer but I don’t know who that might be
asked: “Do you think (England manager) Thomas Tuchel believes Jarell Quansah is better than Jarrad Branthwaite
Ornstein: Quansah is perhaps more versatile
given he can play at centre-back and may well start the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at right-back
I’m a massive fan of Branthwaite and believe his time will come
Maybe where there were close calls for his first England squad
Tuchel ultimately favoured players who have been competing towards the top of the Premier League
asked: “How likely are West Ham to sign anyone in the summer
Is it true they need to sell players to buy anybody?”
Ornstein: West Ham are always active in the market, especially in summer windows, and I expect them to be again this year. The striker position is probably still high in their thinking, given Evan Ferguson’s loan from Brighton will end in May and we don’t know what will happen with Michail Antonio (who turns 35 this month)
I’ve not heard they’re in a ‘Sell to buy’ position
especially given their financial health (heavily aided by the stadium
It will be the first off-season for head coach Graham Potter and head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay
Let’s also see if the club add to their sporting/recruitment setup
It should be a fascinating window at the London Stadium
asked: “Do you expect Jorginho and Thomas Partey to leave Arsenal in the summer?”
Ornstein: Not settled yet but there’s a very good chance
It may be influenced by the status of potential arrivals in midfield
asked: “There were reports this week regarding Jadon Sancho and the loan and buy option details
Is there any truth that he might end up back at Manchester United
Does he figure to be a part of Chelsea’s planning
Ornstein: It was a loan with a conditional obligation to buy
and then — as has been reported elsewhere — Chelsea can decide against going through with the obligation by paying a fee
Sancho could return to United in the summer but that was not the aim of any party when they embarked upon this deal
Let’s see if that remains the case or changes
asked: “What is Chelsea’s thinking in regards to splashing out €50million on a player (Quenda) for two seasons’ time
Will there be significant funds still available for Enzo Maresca in this summer’s window
And how strong is Chelsea’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres?”
will deservedly be among the striker options Chelsea
I’m not aware of them prioritising him or vice versa — but I do expect them to bring in a No 9
There’s been no suggestion of funds not being available and that will only be helped by some inevitable exits — Chelsea have done a lot of trading under their owners and I’d anticipate that continuing
even if not at the same rate as previously
Centre-back Mamadou Sarr is coming in from Strasbourg and Chelsea are very busy signing some of the best young players around
We’ll continue to update you on The Athletic in the weeks ahead
asked: “Any information on the motivations to select a 34-year-old Jordan Henderson for this England squad over Adam Wharton or Morgan Gibbs-White?”
Ornstein: I suspect leadership and experience
perhaps in the dressing room and around the camp as much as on the pitch
They’ve both had a taste already and their trajectory could not be more clear
looks likely to be a hot commodity this summer from all reports
with many Premier League clubs seemingly interested
What are you hearing and who can we expect to be aggressive in pursuit of his signature?”
Ornstein: I can’t guarantee you Larsson will move
or where that destination might be if he does
but the 20-year-old Swede is an elite talent who most of the leading clubs in England and abroad will be monitoring (at the very least)
Manchester City are aware of the release clause that would allow them to replace Kevin De Bruyne with Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes
the midfielder sounds extremely content with life in the North East.“I’m very much at home and living a dream,” he explains
he is asked for more pictures than me – haha
“Their affection towards us is unbelievable
Newcastle is a freezing city – we barely see the sun – but it’s rewarding to be a hero of such lovely people
“I cannot wait for my kids to be able to fully understand what their dad means to this community
it’s hard to explain.”Interview by Caio Carrieri

To describe Guimaraes as just a great player for Newcastle United would actually be doing the Brazilian a disservice
the former Lyon star has been so much more than that
tireless running and crucial goals only tell half the story
Guimaraes is Newcastle’s team captain
both because of his brilliance on the pitch and his personality off of it
Clearly someone who loves playing for the club
Newcastle paid around £41.5million for Guimaraes from Lyon in January 2022 and it’d be fair to say they landed quite the bargain. Naturally, interest in the 27-year-old has emerged, as Manchester City have been linked with Guimaraes
However, at St James’ Park he’s stayed despite so much talk about his future and the Toon skipper has now revealed some panic amongst the fan base after supporters spoke to his father
The midfielder’s father has also become something of a celebrity in Newcastle
Guimaraes senior is often seen at games or supporting his son on social media
his father cannot really speak English and was involved in something of a misunderstanding during a game at Burnley
Guimaraes senior accidently said his son was leaving Newcastle
naturally sparking concern amongst the supporters
the Brazil international said: “I have a funny history with him
“He didn’t know anything and my translator translated for him and said ‘oh
When Bruno Guimarães' dad accidentally told fans he was leaving Newcastle pic.twitter.com/L0dbikqjUP
The number 39 shirt for a central midfielder might seem somewhat strange
particularly as the Brazilian arrived long before Sandro Tonali took the number eight
However, Guimaraes wears the number 39 shirt because it’s his father’s taxi number in Brazil
That underlines just what an important figure his father has been in a football career to have taken him from boyhood club Audax to Lyon and then to making history at Newcastle
Thankfully, he looks here to stay on a long-term basis. Guimaraes wants to win more trophies at Newcastle, which now feels a distinct possibility after the Carabao Cup success
Newcastle skipper Bruno Guimaraes revealed that he received a text message from Alan Shearer before Carabao Cup final against Liverpool
Guimaraes is a regular in Brazil squads, while Joelinton’s transformation at Newcastle United has seen him become a fully-fledged international player
Brazil are no longer the force of old on the international stage but both players will be hoping to end their relatively long wait for another World Cup when the 2026 edition rolls around in the United States
The Selecao have not won the trophy with which they’ve become synonymous since 2002
Looking to restore former glories, Brazil want to appoint Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager. At one point, a deal looked imminent but it has since been thrown into doubt. According to Fabrizio Romano
Madrid are yet to sanction the Italian’s exit
the former Chelsea and AC Milan manager has now spoken
Speaking ahead of his side’s La Liga game against Celta Vigo on Sunday
Ancelotti stressed he would not speak about a potential departure due to his respect for Madrid
reveal that he would confirm his next move after the final game of the season
Ancelotti said: “I have a lot of affection for my club
I will talk about my future on the 25th and not before.”
While Guimaraes is more established in the international set-up
Joelinton is yet to really nail down a place
The 28-year-old has won seven caps since making his debut back in 2023
He was in the most recent squad back in March but seemingly did little to endear himself to supporters
Brazil fans were furious with Joelinton for making a mistake against Colombia in a World Cup qualifier
giving the ball away cheaply before Luiz Diaz scored
it’ll be fascinating to see what becomes of Joelinton in the Brazil national team
