This was disclosed in a press statement issued on May 4, 2025, by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC. According to the statement, the Commission became aware of fraudulent emails from nddcregistry@gmail.com, which falsely claim to be from the Commission’s ‘Board Registry’ and invite scholarship applicants to a fake verification exercise. “The attention of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has been drawn to series of fraudulent emails and messages being sent to applicants of the Postgraduate Foreign Scholarship Programme.  The mailing address (nddcregistry@gmail.com), claiming to be the Commission’s ‘Board Registry,’ invites unsuspecting members of the public to a fake document verification and authentication exercise scheduled for May 19th—21st, 2025, at 30 Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos,” the statement read. The Commission made it clear that it has no link whatsoever with the activity, warning applicants and the general public to be wary of scams involving unofficial channels. “We want to clarify that the NDDC is not associated with this fraudulent selection process and exercise. All official communications concerning the scholarship programme will only be through the official NDDC portal (http://scholarship.nddc.gov.ng),” the statement read. The NDDC further advised applicants to exercise caution and disregard any communication requesting money or sensitive information outside of the Commission’s verified platforms. “Applicants are strongly advised to disregard any unsolicited messages requesting money, an invitation, sensitive information, or offering scholarship placement outside of the official NDDC processes. Anyone who receives such messages is encouraged to report them immediately to the appropriate authorities, as your safety and privacy are our priority.”  Thompson-Wakama also encouraged members of the public to seek clarification only through the commission’s established channels. “We urge those with legitimate inquiries about the scholarship programme to contact us through our official channels. We also encourage beneficiaries of our programmes to verify facts on the NDDC’s official website: [http://nddc.gov.ng],” the statement read. The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is a Nigerian federal agency established to address the socio-economic and environmental challenges facing the Niger Delta region. Its primary mandate is to oversee the sustainable development of this oil-rich area, which has long been affected by underdevelopment and environmental degradation. The NDDC works to improve infrastructure, create job opportunities, and, in carrying out its programs, the Commission collaborates with both federal and state governments, addressing key sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. Nothing activates the bubbly Nigerian passion like football and politics The verdict of many commentators of southern origin was that from the outbursts of both the Northern Elders’ Forum and the Arewa Consultative Forum the ‘North’ has not yet purged itself of what Southern leaders regard as its traditional arrogance could have been president without the votes of the South Nigerian politicians fascinate me with their sheer inventiveness Don’t write off any politician who still has breath in him His dying embers can still trigger a conflagration It was in that context that I decided to take another look at the recent threats by some politicians of Northern extraction to block President Tinubu from having a second term in 2027 the Tinubu administration will be two years old — just two years and some people are already bewailing the turn-by-turn tradition in our unwritten constitution which makes us rotate the presidency between the North and the South The reason some of us can’t join Nigeria’s political jujitsu is because it is a very deadly sport with indeterminate rules As soon as one begins to celebrate our seeming cohesiveness and encouraging handshakes across the four cardinal points of the River Niger A massive shock jolts you back to reality reminding you that our middle name is atavism “Tinubu could not have been president without the support of the North”, said Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed until recently special adviser on Political Affairs to the President in the Office of the Vice President who has now resumed his role as the voice of the Northern Elders’ Forum He argues that President Tinubu should not seek a second term apparently because he thinks that Tinubu’s performance in the first two years has been sub-par Baba-Ahmed’s missionary journey round the major media outlets was closely followed by a release by the Arewa Consultative Forum declaring that the North will only support candidates in the 2027 general elections who are committed to protecting and promoting the region’s interests “Northern Nigeria will remain faithful not to particular politicians or political parties but to those who care about our regional interests and are willing to promote and protect them” said the chairman of the forum’s Board of Trustees who is also a former Minister of Power and Steel researched reporting relies on the support of readers like you Help us maintain free and accessible news for all with a small donation Every contribution guarantees that we can keep delivering important stories —no paywalls and we also have the FCT as a veritable component The North occupies close to 75 per cent of Nigeria’s land area and about 60 per cent of the population.” He went on to issue what many people in the southern parts have since described as an open threat: “In the next six months If the rest of the country wants to join us One thing is clear: nobody can become president of Nigeria without northern support.” We all know how diverse Northern Nigeria is the various forces at play in that part of Nigeria While we continue to pray that God intervenes in the mayhem going on between adherents of different religions and ethnic nationalities in addition to the sheer criminality raging there no matter how many times he has enjoyed government appointments No part of Nigeria has an overwhelming majority over the others no Northerner can become president without Southern votes why divide the people on the basis of region of origin instead of addressing pertinent socio-political issues such as the economy “Enìkan kì í jé àwádé” is a popular Yoruba proverb “One individual can’t announce his presence by saying I doubt if Mr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed and his co-travellers have ever heard this has declared that the NEF does not speak for the entire North describing the body as a political burden to the region said it was too early for the Northern Elders Forum to start finding faults in a president they supported to win an election “The Northern Elders Forum should know that an average Northerner is wiser now and can’t be cajoled to fight any Southerner in power as President we believe in any government or leader that will make the North and every other region better the former governor also warned President Tinubu not to push people to the wall: “You see the mother of the chickens stood up to the cat The word in town is that the Mother Hen has arranged a Peter Obi/El Rufai presidential ticket to ‘de-cat’ Tinubu in 2027 If anyone can plot how to unseat a political personage given the dancing chess board that Nigerian politics has become former governor of Jigawa State and founding member of the PDP he warns that the task of unseating Tinubu is not for opportunist rabble-rousers and his audacity to say this is where I stand… Tinubu is very daring; he is his own creation Look at how he was able to fight the Alliance for Democracy and Afenifere and then Obasanjo.”  The former governor added: “At the APC convention Buhari was against him but he defeated Buhari Don’t underestimate a man like that…  There is no Nigerian like Tinubu who has been there on his own Many enlightened people wish that the meetings of the Northern Elders’ Forum and the Arewa Consultative Forum were actually meant to address the almajiri problem in the North re-calibration of parasitic local government structures insecurity in the North and other problems militating against the people many of the itinerant campaigners are just one appointment away from disembarking from the protest train and retreating quietly to savour the perks of their new office It will do them no harm to take Lamido’s advice the former governor also warned President Tinubu not to push people to the wall:  do the desperate politicians threatening to turn day to night have the discipline vision and virtual death-wish to live up to their grandiloquence Wole Olaoye is a Public Relations consultant and veteran journalist. During a stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Monday, the fund cited a noticeable disparity in application rates compared to other parts of the country. The session was focused on system automation and the student loan application process. The three-day workshop, which kicked off with universities, will continue on Tuesday with polytechnics, monotechnics, and technical institutes, and conclude on May 7 with colleges of education, agriculture, health, and nursing. Akintunde Sawyerr, managing director of NELFund, said the workshop marks a significant milestone in the fund’s mission to deliver a fully digitised, transparent, and student-centric financial aid system. “The meeting is intended to influence how the platform evolves and how we address practical challenges faced by institutions and students alike,” he said. Addressing concerns over delays in disbursement and claims that loans were paid to graduates, Sawyerr stressed the importance of due process. “We are handling government and taxpayers’ money. No disbursement would be rushed,” he said. “If someone applied in their final year and we paid their tuition, it is their obligation to attend classes. Complaining after graduation does not negate the fact that due diligence is required to verify applicants and ensure funds go to those who truly need them.” Also speaking, Ifeoluwa Ehindero, chairman of the house committee on student loans, scholarships, and higher education financing, said there is a need to modernise and streamline the disbursement process. “By automating and optimising the NELFund system, we aim to create a more transparent, efficient, and responsive process for loan applications, approvals, and disbursements,” Ehindero said. He added that while lawmakers are committed to supporting the initiative through legislative reforms, stakeholder collaboration remains critical. “This workshop is not just a platform for training but also an opportunity for collaboration. Your insights will help refine and enhance the system,” he said. In his presentation, Iyal Mustapha, NELFund’s executive director of operations, revealed that over 576,000 students have registered on the platform, with total loan applications amounting to over N170 billion. Mustapha echoed calls for institutions in the south-east and south-south to improve sensitisation to ensure students benefit from the scheme. Ms Azu highlighted the need for the state government to address specific safety issues like girls’ retention in school and safe and hygienic toilet systems. The Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) has urged the Lagos State government to pass the Safe School Declaration (SSD) bill into law for the security of schools. Emmanuela Azu, WARDC head of programmes, made the call in an interview with journalists on Monday in Lagos. She said passing the bill into law would be a significant step towards ensuring the schools were safe and secure for students. “The Lagos State government should pass the SSD bill into law and develop a cost plan to implement its provisions. This will ensure safe, secure schools and a conducive learning environment for the students. “School safety encompasses not only physical security but also psychosocial and psychological supports and protection from abuse,” she said. Ms Azu highlighted the need for the state government to address specific safety issues, such as girls’ retention in school, safe and hygienic toilet systems, perimeter fencing of schools, and psychosocial support for students. She also emphasised the importance of developing a cost plan to implement the provisions of the law for the effective allocation of resources. “A budget is essential to ensure that the provisions of the law are implemented effectively. “We have already developed a cost document that we hope the Ministry of Education will adopt as a working document,” she said. Ms Azụ expressed the hope that the state government would not take the issue of school safety for granted. “We need to be proactive and take steps to ensure that our schools are safe and secure,” she said. The WARDC programme officer urged the government at all levels to adopt and implement the national policy on safety, security and violence-free schools. “Adopt and implement the national/state financing plan for immediate resources for schools and domesticate the Safe School Declaration as a law,” she added. his remarkable debut season in Turkey by setting a new personal goal-scoring record in Galatasaray’s commanding 4-1 victory over Sivasspor on Saturday The Nigerian striker scored twice in the first half and had a third goal ruled out for offside by VAR Osimhen’s brace took his tally to 33 goals across all competitions this season surpassing the 31 goals he scored for Napoli during his best campaign in Italy Osimhen has netted 24 goals in the Turkish Super Lig His overall contribution stands at 41 goal involvements in 37 appearances underlining his crucial impact for Galatasaray The match at Rams Park saw an early goal from Lucas Torreira in the 9th minute followed by Osimhen’s strikes in the 15th and 31st minutes Barış Alper Yılmaz also added to the tally in the 21st minute Sivasspor’s only goal came from Rey Manaj in the 33rd minute With Galatasaray leading the league with 83 points from 32 matches and through to the Turkish Cup final Osimhen is now on track for a double title triumph in what has already been a stellar first season in Turkish football Osimhen is currently on loan at Galatasaray from his parent club who are expected to demand a hefty fee for him in the summer transfer window Prince Adeyemi Aderibigbe who calls himself “the luckiest man in the world” is the oldest of my guests on this programme making him 100 years old in March this year before becoming the managing director of the Morning Post in Lagos He worked with several governments at the top level including the military regime of General Gowon and the civilian administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo Let me start by asking about your early days You were born a prince; what does that mean in real life but that is not sufficient to make me what I am because there were few things I did not like I didn’t like anybody drinking near me and I didn’t stay near them My father drank a lot and I didn’t like it He called me one day and asked: “What do you not like about me?” I said I didn’t like the way he drank I took the advice – Copy what you know is right and good for you I say it with pride that I am proud to be what I am today – a simple person I took him from this house to be installed I am the head of the family and the head of the ruling house I am proud to say that I installed the Ooni that sister of mine went to work and another sister came and took me again they had to find school for me in Calabar It was in Calabar that I met Sir Samuel Manuwa It was Sir Samuel who took me to the Sudan Interior Mission in Kano to check my eyes It is a disease in my family; everybody seems to have very bad eyes But mine is better now because I can see you properly So where did you finish your primary and secondary school because my father’s younger brother was also a teacher; he gave me to another teacher who was under him to take care of me I finished my primary and secondary education there Did you come back to Lagos to continue schooling another sister came and took me back to Lagos I started growing up and became very rascally What were you doing in Lagos; schooling or working Then education came by the side and I started growing up with it There was a tendency in those days for young men to go to England Did you try to go to England for further studies I didn’t know about me being a British subject then It didn’t matter to me because like a playboy we played in the open field and everywhere; that’s what we were doing It was when I went to England in 1950 that I realised I was a British subject and I was subject to their laws That’s how I started my second phase of life Tell us about that phase because it took you to England and you joined the army When you say ‘join the army,’ that would mean I had volunteered to join I was conscripted into the army and taken to Eden I nearly lost my life there because children were playing and I was playing with them I didn’t know that they saw me as an enemy to be killed They tried to kill me but they did not succeed Some of my 11 sisters were well-educated.I will tell you of a very important Nigerian who became president temporarily which didn’t succeed; what were you doing then because you stayed abroad But I am not going to talk about my education because I think I hold that privilege I went to school in the US and did everything I wanted to do there Before you went abroad you were working as a journalist at the Zik Press I was trained by Zik and he said that since I wanted to be a journalist who later became the chief judge of the Western Region There was another person who was an editor of the The Pilot he sent me to the School of Journalism in England He was laughing at me; and two or three days later Zik was better known for politics; how long did you stay at the Zik Press he said my English was impeccable and felt I should be writing That’s how I became a leader writer under him etc I want to give you a photograph of me as a leader writer You were never tempted to join the nationalists Were you not part of the Zikist Movement for national struggle because of the division between Zik and Awolowo I did not like some of their politics and I didn’t hide it I did not like Awolowo’s politics because it was tribal; so I did not take part in it Zik was straight; he did what he said he would do he said he was not going to be part of partisan politics although he ended up being one that my son I told you is an American citizen taught me a lesson; his experience taught me a lesson the mother was 26 weeks pregnant instead of 30 I had to resort to my own mother and my sisters to teach me how to go about it He is now a big boy and I am proud of that after working in the media you also went into the civil service I told you that Ibrahim Attah was my permanent secretary and I was his deputy; and we got on fine It was a special unit that became the DSS(Department 0f State Security) or whatever they are now When I was in the US I was trained as a special branch man So Muhammadu Ribadu was your minister at that point He was the minister of defence and the most senior minister in the cabinet I make bold to say that I had never found a man as honest as Baba it may mean that he was either not convinced or he knew what to do but did not want to tell you There was a time I went to see him in his home but it was stupid for a British luxurious car to have acted that way I left it at the catering rest house and didn’t go back there You told me that Ribadu suddenly left his job as minister and went back to Yola; why did he do that He went back home and became a local government councillor As the most senior minister he was virtually next to the prime minister Why do you think he was disgusted with the government to the extent that he left and went back to Yola He just said he was tired and was going home having lived in the United States and mixed with all sorts of people Where did you go when you left the civil service at some point It was Maitama Sule who invited me from Port Harcourt when I was in the Eastern Nigeria Housing Corporation as general manager He asked me to come to Lagos and talk to them in Gulf Oil Maitama advised me to take it and I took it And I don’t regret taking it because I eventually became the head of that company I would write a report of our findings and send to Maitama the minister of mines and power and copy the prime minister He went on air and said that oil was found in commercial quantity in the Western Region When he got it he phoned me in office and said I should meet him in Abeokuta When I got to the Government House to see him saying he had just left for Ibadan and I should meet him there just me and my driver and went straight to Government House in Ibadan She added that I would catch up with him in Oyo I eventually ended up in his house in Ogbomosho he was going to wait for me there and he started to try and brainwash me To agree that oil was found in the Western Region Where were you when the 1966 coup took place There was a problem in India and the prime minister sent Matthew Mbu It was while he was there that the coup happened here so he took out his gun and said that if I moved he would shoot me try.” I was not going to risk it with the army because they would kill you and that would be the end of it I had to report back that the military had taken over I didn’t know that the prime minister himself had been killed in government we interact with one another very easily so what was I supposed to do; play along with them I saw the body in a military van when they were taking him away What happened was that at the night of the coup It was at that party that I volunteered to take Gowon to his house at the military barracks in Ikeja “I am not going to stay with you in this dark.” So we decided to take them to Apapa By the time we got to the main gate of the barracks They asked where I was coming from and I said I just wanted to drop Gowon The two boys who staged the coup were both majors Of course they all respected me because they saw me in the ministry (of Defence) all her brothers are envious and they want me to get her to report to them You celebrated your 100th birthday in March; how do you feel The mother of the chief judge of Ogun State was my telephonist; in other words she was the one who received my calls and passed them to me Then the father of the chief judge was one of my boys – one of my reporters who came visiting me and saw her They produced two children – this one and her elder sister That’s what I have been enjoying all my life One other strong relationship you’ve had over the years is with Obasanjo It seems you were in his government when he was president I met him when I went to see Ike as Provost Marshal I saw Obasanjo playing with another officer with his gun but he said I should not mind because that’s what they did Your relationship with him continued even when he was a military head of state I have never tasted drink in my life in any form Never; even though palm wine is common among my people When I told my father what I didn’t like and what I liked about him he advised me to keep to that and it would pay me in the end That end is what he did for me in his final days He gave me a farm that is sufficient for me to live for the rest of my life It is a big farm – about 1,000 hectares Obasanjo is known to be a very difficult man to get along with The magazine commemorating my 100th birthday is from Olusegun Obasanjo “It gives me immense pleasure to lead my family in joining you and your family in celebrating your 100th birthday on March It is the grace of God to make you clock a century with so much given to family it shows a very strong relationship; but what did you do in his government I told you he consulted me; and within my limitations Did you keep the relationship throughout his tenure I was not living in the barracks; I lived in Sheraton Hotel he called me and I would go there and offer my advice Do you still maintain a relationship with some past leaders When he was supposed to come for my birthday party he was here in Ibadan by 9.30am and stayed at Premier Hotel until evening when we started Ike’s wife came back from the US or wherever to join her husband at the party Why do you see yourself as the luckiest man in the world I live a simple life and I am very proud of that do you observe other habits you think have contributed to your long life Are there things you don’t eat or eat that have helped you to stay strong at 100 you will see a photograph; that’s me and my father That photograph was taken when he was 115 years So you inherited long life from your father I drink a cup of tea in the morning and will remain like that till 5pm when my dinner will be ready do you struggle to make a living now or you just relax on your farm I am a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and I go there So you go to the NUJ secretariat regularly That’s why I say I consider myself one of the luckiest men Are you in touch with the current political leaders Having seen all the past governments in Nigeria are you happy with the way the present government is going Your president( Tinubu) and Trump are two of a kind; they are the same So I called this boy – my son to take the position – but he said no; he didn’t have the time Is it that when we reach the age of 90 or 100 Is it that you don’t care about anything anymore All I want is to see those behind me who seek my counsel Does that make you go back to God and spend all your time praying and supplicating My life is to mix with like-minds and seek counsel I am not lonely because I have grandchildren who come and play with me I go out and they come and play with me; and in the evening I go and sleep You spoke of your first wife who died; and the children who are now all over the place running their lives We met on a Sunday morning when I went to drop my daughter on campus My daughter had pleaded with me to take her roommate and friend And this woman was standing by her roommate so how could I give this one a lift and I ignore the other I told her that I was not going back to the campus as I was going to see my uncle at the farm I will go.” That was how she entered the car and we went I left her in the car and I didn’t ask her name because that was not my interest “Who is that lady?” I said I didn’t know and explained that I just gave her a lift He asked if she was not taught to greet elders if she saw them I told her that my uncle said she didn’t have manners because she could not greet Did you say she was 35 years younger than you at that point Nobody knew until I was going to my mother’s village at Ilarungun Osun State and she asked if she could go with me and I said yes from that time on the farm you continued to see each other yes because I was on the campus( as a lecturer) How did she react when your uncle said she would be your wife She just greeted and went back to the car and my uncle said “That’s the girl you will marry.” I even laughed at my uncle and said that’s how old people would talk I got down and she also got down from the car Then my uncle’s mother saw her and started dancing “When I see my children I shouldn’t know them?” She told me that my uncle was at the palace and I should meet him there “This is family reunion.” He said that without anybody asking him any question “Don’t you know that the girl is pregnant?” I told him that I knew she was pregnant “This is a member of your family.” That’s how the relationship started How has the journey of remarriage been all these years He knows the relationship between me and Mama And that’s how it will be until I go; so help me God Is that one of the reasons you are the happiest man in the world UPDATE NEWS: Nigerians can now earn US Dollars through domain flipping buy domain names for cheap and have it resold to earn up to $15,000 Join Daily clubs such as Aruna Sports Club the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Having committed the mortal sin of refusing a Southern candidate in the 2023 presidential election an immoral violation of the principles of zoning Having betrayed its most consistent support base of the South-South and South-East since 1998 the PDP has lost its soul in the scheme of national politics and it is only a matter of time before the hollow shell of whatever is left of the party collapses The recent gale of defections from Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has set off a public conversation about the future prospect of Africa’s largest multi-party democracy The latest defection of the governor of Delta State as well as the democratically elected structure has sent shockwaves across the political spectrum with many people suggesting that Nigeria may just be on the road to a one-party state This concern is made real by the fact that many other governors and prominent members of the opposition have either pledged their support for the Ahmed Bola Tinubu-led APC presidency or have indicated their willingness to jump into the ship of the ruling party In their reaction to the unfolding saga on the Nigerian political scene activists and politicians have sounded the alarm on what they believe to be the political machination of the opposition into induced coma by President Tinubu and his ruling APC apparatchik in order to have a smooth sail in the 2027 general elections Many believe that the opposition is being harassed by anti-corruption agencies into submission while President Tinubu is also deploying a charm offensive to lure opposition elements to bed For the Tinubu administration that is struggling with a poor public rating of its performance almost two years into its four-year tenure in office it doesn’t need to be given a bad name before it is hanged for decimating the opposition “At a time that elements of the conservative Northern political establishment in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have resolved to shift presidential power to the South of Nigeria in 2023 the liberal Northern politicians in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seem determined to retain power in the Northern region beyond 2023 And it came to pass that indeed the APC fielded a southern candidate in the person of Bola Ahmed Tinubu while the PDP headed North with Atiku Abubakar I had also warned that if PDP violated the zoning principle which rotates power between the North and South the party will not only lose the election but will run into troubled waters that will sink the Titanic of the PDP into oblivion which has been in firm control of the politics of Nigeria’s largest democratic demography since 2015 when the APC came to power may have come to the realisation that it cannot hold on to power after eight years without severe consequences for the unity and continuous existence of Nigeria as seen in the near absence of Northern presidential aspirants on its platform the President Buhari-led APC has clearly settled for a Nigerian president of Southern origin beginning from 2023 when Nigerians will go to the polls to vote for a new president with its strongest political support base in the South and minority areas of the North (the Middle Belt) and which is expected to be the most willing to pick its presidential candidate from the region is looking towards the North for its presidential redemption Clearly unprepared for a Southern presidency the PDP is hoping to opportunistically inherit the massive votes of Northern Nigeria by fielding a candidate from the region at a time the APC is looking South In the thinking of many a PDP stalwart from the South the interest of the party should be to win the next presidential election by any means possible and not be concerned by the morality of zoning for the purpose of equity Having been defeated twice in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections by the APC which was heavily enamoured on both occasions by the massive votes of Nigeria’s largest voting bloc in the Muslim North like members of a defeated army whose officers and men are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder have surrendered to the political supremacy of Northern Nigeria.” “That the PDP may not sail against the strong wind of the presidency that is blowing South will be for the party to field a Southern candidate as its candidate in the 2023 presidential election the 2023 presidential election is not just about “winnability” but actually survival While the APC is dominant in the North and the PDP’s strongest support base is in the South the move by the APC to field a Southern candidate in the 2023 presidential election will torpedo the PDP from the region And if the PDP goes ahead to sail against the wind in 2023 by fielding a Northern candidate as the party will lose in the North and in the South to the APC and go into extinction in post-Buhari Nigeria.” I have always maintained that Atiku’s ambition as it was after Atiku happened to the party that it developed a Wike problem And having killed the PDP with his immoral ambition Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is only giving the party a befitting burial by conducting its final rites of passage into oblivion the PDP will be further emptied of whatever is left of its membership… And again it came to pass that PDP’s Atiku Abubakar lost in the North and South to APC’s Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the party is now being torpedoed from its Southern support base following the emergence of a president of Southern extraction Having committed the mortal sin of refusing a Southern candidate in the 2023 presidential election This position has been affirmed by no less a person than Ifeanyi Okowa Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential who justified his recent defection to the APC on the exigencies of a Southern solidarity with President Tinubu and the need to reconcile with his estranged Southern support base I realised our people were not interested in having another Northerner come into power But the decision had already been taken at the federal level by the party I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people.” the PDP will be further emptied of whatever is left of its membership as the protracted legal conundrum arising from the struggle for the dying soul of the PDP between Atiku and Wike may result in the party’s inability to field candidates across board going into the 2027 general elections or at best the party will field a weak presidential candidate that will only serve as a placeholder for APC’s President Ahmed Bola Tinubu Majeed Dahiru, a public affairs analyst, writes from Abuja and can be reached The election of executives at the grassroots level to run the affairs of the Local Government has always been a mixture of peace and violence between leading political parties, aspirants, indigenes and settlers in the various area councils. Local government elections is a critical element of democracy and governance which provides a vital pathway for new political participants to engage communities and impact governance from the ground up in their quest for good governance. In Lagos State, elections have always been characterized with violence and peaceful conducts. Clashes between APC supporters and main opponents’ supporters from the PDP have been reported from various parts of the state like Surulere, Agege, Amuwo-Odofin, Ajeromi Ifelodun, Ojo, Oshodi-Isolo and Kosofe LGAs of the state. Election violence can diminish voter turnout, influence election outcomes, and erode public trust in the electoral system raising concerns about the legitimacy of results according to Yiaga Africa. Political parties should ensure that the local elections is not a zero sum game, whereby the winners takes it all and the benefits of good governance is limited and retained to only party members and loyalists. The violence that led to the death of Jide Badaru and one other with several people injured in August 2018 in Surulere Local Government should not be allowed to happen again. According to the cousin of the deceased Mr. Babatunde Badaru, a former Local Government Chairmanship Aspirant in his accounts of the violence that characterizes elections in Surulere LGA. The wanton destruction of properties, continued threat to lives of opposition supporters should be a thing of the past. Since it is a grassroots election, the African communal sense of being should be displayed during the elections. Perpetrators of electoral violence and their sponsors should be arrested and should be diligently prosecuted so as to deter others who see violence as a viable pathway to electoral victory. Tola Ogunnubi ANIPR wrote in from Abuja Abuja Notify me of follow-up comments by email. It has become necessary to respond to the recent disparaging remarks directed at the person and professional legacy of Aare Dele Momodu by Mr. Lere Olayinka. Such comments are not only unfortunate but reflect a worrying disregard for the foundations, integrity, and future of journalism in Nigeria. To begin with, journalism is not a profession strictly defined by one’s academic degree. Unlike medicine, law, or engineering, journalism is more than a formal discipline — it is a calling, a vocation grounded in intellect, observation, empathy, and courage. As the legendary Walter Cronkite rightly said, “Journalism is what we need to make democracy work.” A journalist is one who dedicates their craft to telling the truth, elevating public discourse, and preserving the record of our times. Therefore, it is both unfair and intellectually dishonest to attempt to reduce Aare Dele Momodu — a man with over three decades of impactful, innovative, and professional media experience — to merely a “Yoruba graduate turned journalist.” Studying Yoruba or any language at university level demands high intelligence and analytical depth. Moreover, Aare Momodu holds a Master’s degree in a field directly relevant to journalism and is currently pursuing his PhD at a prestigious international university. Not only is he academically grounded, but he would also be eminently qualified to teach journalism at any level. Across Nigeria and the world, the media space is filled with respected professionals who did not study journalism but have become towering figures in the industry. Consider the likes of Rufai Oseni (Botany), Seun Okinbaloye (Theatre Arts and Law), Kenny Ogungbe ,JAJ Ambrose Somide, Olisa Adibua, and many more. Their success proves that journalism rewards passion, integrity, and skill — not just certificates. Aare Dele Momodu’s contribution to journalism is both historic and enduring. From his role as Features Editor at Concord Newspapers, to Editor of Classique Magazine, and founder of the iconic Ovation International Magazine, his career has defined excellence and innovation. Ovation International Magazine remains a global African brand — modeled after world-class publications like Hello! and OK! Magazine. It tells the African story with pride, style, and professionalism, profiling global figures such as SEAL and Mohamed Al-Fayed (former owner of Harrods), whose stories were syndicated by other internationally magazines and credited Ovation international magazine for breaking the stories. The magazine has built a powerful niche audience, featured leaders like former Governor Nyesom Wike, and employed one of the largest teams of professional photographers on the continent. Its equipment and logistical investments run into millions — it is not just a magazine; it is a media institution. As Yoruba people and Omoluabis, we must remember that politics is seasonal, but legacy is eternal. Our utterances today shape how history will judge us. To attempt to diminish a man of Aare Dele Momodu’s calibre for fleeting political points is regrettable, my brother, Lere Olayinka. As Maya Angelou wisely noted, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Aare Dele Momodu is one of the foundational roots of African journalism. He deserves recognition, not ridicule. And if we may ask — how many politicians studied Political Science before entering politics? Or you, Mr. Lere Olayinka, now a political PRO — did you study Public Relations? Let us reflect before we cast stones. Irrespective of our political differences, let us disagree without being disagreeable. Let respect and truth guide our words — always. A student once asked a British Professor of Mass Communication about the “essence of journalism” and his response was ” The essence of Journalism is beyond the classroom”. Several works explore the intersection of journalism, education and real-world practice. For instance, The Journalism Behind Journalism by Gina Baleria delves into the intangible skills essential for effective journalism, such as curiosity, empathy, and community engagement. This suggests that while formal education in journalism provides foundational knowledge, the true essence of journalism often extends beyond the classroom, encompassing real-world experiences and the development of critical, ethical, and practical skills. Chief Dele Momodu’s career trajectory would humble many. With a background in Yoruba and a master’s in English Literature from Obafemi Awolowo University, Momodu transitioned into journalism through passion, training, and an unbreakable commitment to the truth. He has interviewed presidents, launched political campaigns, and mentored young journalists across the continent. His brand of journalism is rooted not in theory but in lived experience, global exposure, and continuous refinement. His unique journalism style can be attributed to his globetrotter nature, as someone who travelled over 70 countries. To belittle his legacy based on academic qualifications is to ignore the real measure of a journalist: integrity, influence, and impact. Apart from Chief Dele Momodu, many renowned international journalists never studied journalism in school. A few of them are as follows: The first is Anderson Cooper of CNN, a Yale graduate and a global journalist who never studied journalism. He majored in political science. His breakthrough came not from a classroom, but from smuggling himself into conflict zones with a video camera, sending raw footage to networks. That self-taught and self-funded initiative launched one of the most respected careers in international reporting. The 4th personality is Christiane Amanpour who holds a degree in international affairs, not journalism. Yet, through persistence, courage, and on-the-job mastery, she rose to become CNN’s Chief International Anchor, known for her sharp questioning and unmatched field reporting. The common thread among these names including Chief Dele Momodu is that they didn’t wait for permission to practice journalism. They didn’t hide behind qualifications. They went out, asked the hard questions, told the untold stories, and shaped national and global conversations. Chief Dele Momodu’s journey is an inspiring testament to what can be achieved with passion, discipline, and lifelong learning. His legacy stands tall, not in lecture halls, but in print, in the streets, and in the minds of millions who have been informed, inspired, and empowered by his work. Let us not diminish a man’s contribution because he took a different route or mere political sentiment. After all, history remembers impact, not certificates. Dr. Sani Sa’idu Baba writes from Kano, and can be reached via @ssbaba.pys@buk.edu.ng “…Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining…” I bring you good tidings, sir. At this pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, I write to commend your efforts and unwavering resolve in leading the emerging coalition of opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections. Indeed, it is both timely and necessary. History often remembers those who dared to unite for a common good, not those who bowed to pressure or fled at the sound of resistance. We’ve seen similar examples across the continent: In Kenya, the National Super Alliance (NASA) and earlier the Jubilee Alliance reshaped the electoral map by significantly altering the political landscape via consolidating regional and ethnic support into broad-based coalitions. These alliances redefined electoral competition, shifting focus from individual parties to powerful blocs capable of influencing national outcomes. In South Africa, opposition parties joined forces to challenge the African National Congress (ANC) dominance through coalitions to challenge its longstanding dominance, particularly in strategically important provinces. In Zimbabwe, the MDC Alliance in 2018 posed a serious challenge to ZANU-PF’s decades-long grip on power since 1980, signifying a shift in their political landscape. In Israel, a broad coalition even unseated a long-time prime minister, showing how powerful political unity can be when rooted in a shared vision. Your coalition, sir, must be more than a platform to win elections. It should be a movement, one that gives hope to the youth, inspires the forgotten middle class, and empowers the marginalized. The SABUWAR TAFIYA should therefore be a MOVEMENT and a unstoppable tsunami that will wipe away the self-centred politicians, or simply our oppressors. Sir, your experience and network, combined with younger voices and fresh perspectives, can offer that leadership that will bring about the long anticipated change in our dear country, this time around, a change for the better. As you forge ahead, permit me to offer some heartfelt advice: (1) Your Excellency Sir, to effectively form a strong and strategic coalition, it is vital to base your decisions on thorough and credible research. By leveraging data, you can identify regions where support is weak, understand public sentiment, and pinpoint areas needing improvement. Research will provide the clarity and direction necessary to build alliances that resonate with the people and strengthen your path to national leadership. (2) Avoid internal sabotage at all costs. Many coalitions fail not from external attacks, but internal egos. Not everyone joining the movement should be received with open arms. (4) At this critical juncture, it is essential to clearly state your position regarding the party platform your coalition intends to adopt. Many of your supporters are currently uncertain and directionless, which creates a dangerous vacuum that the ruling party could easily exploit to weaken your base. Providing clarity now will unify your allies, energize your followers, and ensure strategic alignment ahead of any political realignment. To wrap it all up your Excellency, you have nothing left to prove but everything left to give. If this coalition succeeds, it will not be a personal victory, it will be a generational breakthrough for Nigeria. So keep your eyes on the goal. Do not be distracted by propaganda or detractors. Nigeria is watching. And many are silently hoping that this time, unity will not be a fleeting dream but a lasting reality. This exercise is a yearly ritual for Munachi and his younger sister. Narrating how he found himself in a Yahoo training centre in Lagos, after he was arrested, Munachi, said prior to his arrival in Lagos, he was living happily with his parents in Anambra State before he was introduced to the gang who operates the facility. According to him, one of the factors that pushed him into the crime was the death of his father, whom he said was the sole breadwinner. “I was woken up one early morning by the news of the sudden death of my father who left home for his business place the previous day. “His death shattered my dreams of a promising carrier in future as I was made to drop out of school since the proceed from my mother’s petty trading business was not enough to sustained the family. “Then, not knowing what to do, my mother approached a friend of hers, for financial support, but rather she introduced my mother to a gang that was recruiting young boys in the East into internet fraud. “To her, the prospects was good as she believed that in less than one year, her young son would be rich enough to shoulder the burden and that her worries will be over. “The only thing that stood against the thought of a lavish lifestyle is the money to buy me a laptop, data and some few other items. “Not wanting to fail again, she quickly, without thinking of the possible dangers ahead, sold the only land that was given to my father by his family to raise the fund,” he confessed to a team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti where he was being detained. Munachi explained that few weeks later, he arrived Lagos along with three others and that they were enrolled into the internet training centre where they will be taught on the technics of swindling unsuspecting foreign and local businessmen. “At first, we were shown different romance online sites and how we can capture those seeking sexual pleasure for a token in dollars. “We all had different roles to play in the quest to defraud a would-be client. We must perform our part perfectly, failure of which attracts severe beating. Speaking at the conference, Hundeyin said operatives of the command successfully uncovered and dismantled an illegal internet fraud training facility, commonly referred to as “Yahoo School”, operating in the Iju area of Lagos. He stated that during the operations, detectives of the command arrested 10 suspects, four of which are the yahoo experts, who were running the notorious school. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the principal suspects of the facility recruited the trainees from Anambra State, engaged them to commit internet fraud and other related crimes. “The proceeds from their fraudulent activities were being confiscated by the principal suspects. All suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba for further discreet investigation and prosecution. “Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the sponsors who financed the trainee’s enrolment in the school, as well as the owner of the facility where the cranial and illegal activities took place,” he added.
