Measuring America's People and Economy
One must possess a certain physical and mental toughness to succeed in football
Every rep matters and must be played like it is your last
Overcoming adversity on the field is not just expected; it is a requirement
or going through intense practice sessions intended to test your stamina to its limits.
it parallels life: you will face challenges that will set you back
but you will come back stronger by handling them the right way
safety on the Florida Atlantic football team
any day-to-day adversity that occurs on the field pales in comparison to the challenge of life that struck him from birth
Lamas-Lanier was named a recipient of the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award
given by the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals
to those who have overcome significant on and off-the-field challenges.
and my family because they all supported me,” Lamas-Lanier said
No one exemplifies the meaning of this award as much as Lamas-Lanier
He was born in 2001 under challenging circumstances to a mother struggling with substance abuse and being separated from his father
His mom’s life was cut short by a hit-and-run accident when he was just eight years old
and much of his childhood was horrifically plagued by further tragic deaths of two aunts and multiple cousins.
Surrounded by the temptation of gang life growing up in Goulds
Lamas-Lanier instead put his head down and got to work on the football field
being able to go out on the field and dominate my opponent,” Lamas-Lanier said
Lamas-Lanier credits his faith in God and life lessons from his grandparents for ultimately keeping him on the right path
“My grandma and grandad always instilled in me to just do what is right
Don’t go out there trying to cause trouble because of the environment we were already living in
and you can make up for it,” Lamas-Lanier said
His hard work earned him a spot on the Christopher Columbus High School (Miami) football team
where his play resulted in Division I scholarship offers.
Lamas-Lanier spent his junior season on the sidelines with a torn ACL
and was told by multiple doctors he would never play football again
But the unmatched determination never wavered
Lamas-Lanier returned to the field in time for the playoffs and led Columbus to their first state championship victory
overcoming a 20-7 deficit with just four minutes remaining
It was a challenge that almost any spectator would deem impossible
but miraculous comebacks defined his entire upbringing; it was only fitting that his high school career ended similarly
After seasons at East Coast Prep and Lake Erie
Lamas-Lanier returned to South Florida in 2022 as a walk-on for the Florida Atlantic football team
where he is now about to enter his third year as an Owl
Lamas-Lanier attended a ceremony in Las Vegas to receive his trophy as a Wilma Randolph Award recipient
Accompanying him were two teammates who have substantially impacted his life since their days as teammates at Columbus High School and now as Owls: Offensive linemen Federico Maranges and Andre Lamas
The latter is whom Courtney now shares part of his last name after the Lamas family took him in as one of their own.
The three share an unbreakable bond and enjoy their Florida Atlantic experience as teammates and roommates.
They showed me the ropes and how to accomplish things because they had already been there when I came in
The bond is crazy; we’re always having fun and doing things around the house
just having that brotherhood that Columbus instilled in us,” Lamas-Lanier said
With two seasons of eligibility remaining as a student-athlete
While he carries his individual goal of earning a scholarship
and his desire to give back to the community shapes his mentality on the field
“I want to help the Boca Raton community win a championship
It would be good to bring back a trophy.”
he sees his future in a life of public service
“It goes back to my determination to help people and better their lives around the community wherever I end up working
I would like to help put out fires and do a lot of great things in the community,” Lamas-Lanier said
Lamas-Lanier continues his football journey and hopes his story will inspire others facing a life challenge on any scale
“There can be a lot of adversity that you can go through throughout your life
but sometimes it can be a humbling moment for you
Get yourself back up and do what you want to do in life despite the hardships that you go through.”

were the primary concerns of the Dalai Lama during this period
He has worked extensively to build and sustain international awareness of the plight of Tibet
In 1987 he put forth his “Five Point Peace Plan” at the U.S
Related to his peace efforts, interreligious harmony frequently featured in his advocacy. In his essay “A Human Approach to World Peace” he wrote
Interfaith understanding will bring about the unity necessary for all religions to work together
we must remember that there are no quick or easy solutions
We cannot hide the doctrinal differences that exist among various faiths
nor can we hope to replace the existing religions by a new universal belief
Each religion has its own distinctive contributions to make
and each in its own way is suitable to a particular group of people as they understand life
he pivoted from a larger conversation about avoiding violence to unifying science and religion:
Writing for The New York Times in 2005
If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong
science and Buddhism share a search for the truth and for understanding reality
By learning from science about aspects of reality where its understanding may be more advanced
I believe that Buddhism enriches its own worldview
and his family were detained by the Chinese government and have since been missing
according to authorities outside China (China insists that he and his family are living a normal life in Tibet)
Later in 1995 the Chinese government appointed its own choice for the Panchen Lama
In a 2004 interview with Time magazine, the 14th Dalai Lama stated that if Tibetans want a 15th Dalai Lama, there will be one, and the successor would be discovered not in Chinese-controlled Tibet but in exile
thus possibly suggesting a way of avoiding Chinese oversight
In 2007 the Chinese communist government declared that it would have final say over Tibetan Buddhist lamas’ reincarnations and prohibited anyone outside the country (including the present Dalai Lama) from having any involvement
Yet the Dalai Lama cautioned against political involvement in the process of finding the incarnation
and he subsequently suggested that he himself might appoint his successor
The Chinese government rejected this idea and insisted that the tradition of selecting a new Dalai Lama by determining the reincarnation of the predecessor had to be maintained
Some observers speculated that two Dalai Lamas
following the example of the Panchen Lama’s selection in 1995
In 2007 the 14th Dalai Lama suggested that his successor could be a woman
breaking with a long tradition of male lamas
he declared that “the rule by kings and religious figures is outdated
We have to follow the trend of the free world
which is that of democracy.” In making this decision
he ended the political authority of the Dalai Lama
which had begun with the fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century

The fourteenth Dalai Lama has written scores of books
as he approaches ninety years of age in July
he has written what is likely his last book—and the most political
about Tibet and the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Named the next Dalai Lama at the age of two
he fled into exile in 1959 at the age of twenty-three
The “voiceless” people in Voice for the Voiceless are the people of Tibet
and here the Dalai Lama recounts his roughly sixty-five years of attempting to lead his people from his refuge in India
He tells the story of his efforts to negotiate with the Communist Chinese—and (though the term is perhaps inappropriate in this context) he pulls no punches.
The term “Communist Chinese” appears in the very first paragraph of the preface to the book
and readers are left in no doubt about the nature of Chinese rule
“The simple fact is that in so far as the Tibetans on the ground are concerned
the Communist Chinese rule in Tibet remains that of a foreign
and oppressive occupying power.“ He describes the brutal suppression of the Tibetan uprising in 1959 in searing words: “atrocities that I found difficult to believe for their levels of depravity…

to negotiate with the PRC government to improve his people’s situation
he visited Beijing and met Mao in 1954—who told him “religion is poison.” The young Buddhist leader was interested in the theoretical Marxist opposition to exploitation but concluded even then that “what is lacking in Marxism is compassion” and he could not accept “the deliberate promotion of hate through class struggle.” He met with Zhou Enlai several times in 1956 and was given many assurances that any “excesses” committed by Chinese officials in Tibet would be corrected
it had become clear that virtually everything I had been told by Zhou himself and by him on behalf of Mao had been falsehoods and dissimulations.”
When the Chinese army seized total control in 1959
the twenty-five-year-old Dalai Lama fled to India
which has given him and the growing Tibetan exile community around Dharmsala safe refuge ever since
That was not the end of his efforts to negotiate with the PRC
“there were only two substantial periods of discussions with Beijing.” The first was when Deng Xiaoping was the communist party leader
and Deng told the Dalai Lama’s brother in 1979 that “except for independence everything is negotiable
Everything can be discussed.” But the talks that took place proved that “there was no space yet for a substantive conversation.”
made a historic decision to abandon any hope of independence for Tibet and promote instead his “middle way,“ which sought autonomy within the PRC
He told the European Parliament in 1988 that he was “expressing our willingness to remain part of the People’s Republic of China
but only with the guarantee of genuine autonomy.“ He also began to outline the evolution in his thinking about his own role
and stated that “it was my wish not to take any active part in any future government of Tibet…."
This period of engagement with the PRC ended with its crushing of the freedom demonstration in Tiananmen Square in 1989
“The process that had begun in 1979 with Deng Xiaoping’s statement to my brother… that apart from independence
had come to an end.“ Deng was the last Communist Chinese leader the Dalai Lama knew
there were few meetings. Over the ensuing years
the Chinese communist hostility to the Dalai Lama increased: in 1994 a complete ban on any photographs or portraits of him in either public spaces or even private homes was adopted.
But a second period of dialogue began in 2002
with a new series of meetings between representatives of the Dalai Lama (led by Lodi Gyari
a key adviser of the Dalai Lama for decades) and the PRC
but “at no point did the Chinese side present any substantive proposals.” There were further informal and confidential contacts through individual Chinese
as he writes of these decades of efforts at serious discussions with the PRC
“looking back with the benefit of hindsight
I wonder if there was ever a genuine intention on the part of the Chinese leadership for substantive discussions…
What mattered to China was to be seen talking
He also describes an interesting facet of his negotiations with the PRC: he was focused on Tibet
but the Chinese communist officials were focused mostly on him
the Chinese were trying to get him to return to Tibet as if his return would suggest that the issue of Tibet was now resolved
the Chinese position has been all about his own status “with no attempt at addressing the real issue—the well-being of the Tibetan people.”
The Dalai Lama candidly describes the situation today as “grim
who visited Tibet in 2021 (the first visit of a Chinese leader in more than thirty years) seem to be focused on "tightening of control and intensification of measures aimed at assimilation.” For example
young Tibetans are educated only in Chinese
There is direct Communist Party control over monasteries and even more pervasive surveillance
“Increasingly the Tibetans inside Tibet are being made to feel that what is wrong with them from the Chinese authorities' perspective is simply that they are Tibetans.”
I first came in contact with the Tibetans when I served as assistant secretary of state for Human Rights in the Reagan administration
who then headed the office of Tibet in Washington
I happily agreed and asked him to come to my office
This was shocking and unacceptable to the China Desk
The Tibetans could not be allowed in the building lest the Chinese Communists be offended
the compromise was that I could meet with them— but not at the State Department
I got to meet the Dalai Lama when he visited President George W
the Dalai Lama has met with both Presidents Bush
though he was not granted a meeting with President Trump or President Biden
In the elaborate efforts to honor the Dalai Lama but not overly offend the Chinese communists
all these meetings took place in the White House but not in the Oval Office
The theory is that the Dalai Lama is not a head of state
But the real reason is a sort of kowtow to the PRC
It is certainly correct that he is not a head of state
due to his own changes to Tibet’s political structure
he fully ended his own political role and established both an elected executive and parliamentary body
“I said that rule by kings and religious figures was outdated
and we had to follow the trend of the free world
which is toward democracy.” But numerous religious leaders get Oval Office meetings
so the refusal ever to grant one to the Dalai Lama is hard to defend
In an interesting reflection on world politics
he wonders about the contrast between Mongolia
He knows that it is partly due to the Soviet Union’s backing for Mongolia’s independence from China and the pressure on Chiang Kai-shek to accept it
He also blames Tibet for not asserting its own independence at the international level after the First World War—not
But that is water over the dam a century ago
He notes that there is now both a Tibetan political leadership and a substantial population of Tibetans living outside Tibet in the free world who can continue the struggle
Whether there will be a fifteenth Dalai Lama is a separate question
He reminds readers that “as early as the 1960s
I have expressed that whether the Dalai Lama institution should continue or not as a matter for the Tibetan people
if the Tibetan people feel that the institution has served its purpose
and there is now no longer any need for a Dalai Lama
in which case I would be the last Dalai Lama
I have also said that if there is continued need
then there will be the Fifteenth Dalai Lama.”
The problem is how that individual will be chosen. When the last Panchen Lama (the second most important Tibetan Buddhist leader) was chosen
he was immediately seized by communist authorities and has not been seen in thirty years
In an effort to avoid such a disastrous situation after his own death
the fourteenth Dalai Lama has said that only a reincarnation “done through traditional Tibetan Buddhist methods” can be accepted by the Tibetan people and Tibetan Buddhists around the world
he has added that “since the purpose of reincarnation is to carry on the work of the predecessor
the new Dalai Lama will be born in the free world….” This is a pre-emptive rejection of anyone selected by the PRC or inside its borders
The “meddling” of the PRC in recognition of the next Dalai Lama is wildly inappropriate
because the regime explicitly rejects religion
Here he comments (“half joking”) that “before communist China gets involved in the business of recognizing the reincarnation of lamas
it should first recognize the reincarnations of its past leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping!”
This volume ends with expressions of gratitude and an appeal to the world not to forget Tibet and its people
has led his people well for three-quarters of a century
The independence of his country has not survived
but his leadership has ensured that its people
and religion have remained visible—crying out against oppression
and seeking only peaceful support in their long struggle against what amounts to cultural genocide
given PRC efforts to move Han Chinese to the Tibetan plateau and change its demography
combined with regime suppression of Tibetan language
The PRC is not trying to kill the Tibetans
but to erase their identity as a people.
I used to speak each year at “Captive Nations” events
Those were commemorations of the juridical existence of Estonia
whose forced absorption into the Soviet Union in 1940 had never been accepted by the United States
and I wondered if they thought—as I did—that my brave words about restoring the independence of the Baltic nations were neither persuasive nor very realistic
Yet it happened; all those decades of Captive Nations protests ended in freedom
Those who are demanding not independence but real autonomy for Tibet
with the ability to protect its people and their culture
wonder today when or whether their captive nation will achieve such freedom
for so long a fixture of Tibetan and international life
will not live to see whether his efforts succeed
achieved more for his people than could possibly have been expected
history will point to him as the key figure in that achievement.
of Biloxi passed away peacefully in the care of St
Joseph Hospice in Gulfport in the early hours of January 19
where she attended Sacred Heart Girls High and played the flute in the kilted marching band
she worked as an assistant in the Gulfport offices of Dr
These plans changed when she encountered Thomas Wiltz of Biloxi and his vintage Ford Mustang
The two married in 1974 and had two children
Elizabeth Katie and Jason Michael Wiltz.
When illness left Thomas unable to continue working in his family auto parts business
an in-home daycare which she operated for more than 30 years
she served as a loving caretaker to literally hundreds of Gulf Coast children who will always remember her simply and affectionately as “Miss Cathy.” Miss Cathy was a warm-hearted
devout Catholic who loved spending time with her friends and family
She was a tremendous fan of pop music from the 1960s and 70s (especially the Bee Gees) and would often entertain her loved ones by putting on headphones and enthusiastically lip-syncing to her favorite songs
She was also a great lover of movies who frequently peppered her conversations with dialogue borrowed from favorites like Young Frankenstein
and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
She will be remembered for her outgoing personality
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents
Harold (“Flash”) and Verne Lamas
She is survived by her husband of 50 years

Thomas Lamas of Jackson and James (“Jimmy”) Lamas of Ocean Springs
Emilie Wiltz of New Orleans and Anna Card of O’Fallon
Josie and Janie Cordera; and her grandnephews
all of whom she loved very dearly and prayed for daily.
The family would like to thank all of Catherine’s caregivers at Memorial Hospital and St Joseph Hospice for their professional and kindhearted care.

Chef Anthony Lamas is in prep mode this week
The James Beard Award nominee and owner of restaurant Seviche is gearing up to serve thousands of wings
sliders and more for the 2024 Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville
Lamas spoke to LPM’s William Padmore and J
This interview has been edited for clarity and length
William Padmore: From your beginnings to right now
what does success mean to you and what does it look like
People started investing in remodeling their kitchens at home
because people wanted these artisanal products
and people are sourcing better and eating better
So I think in the beginning it was like it was easy to kind of get an ego
you get a James Beard Award or nominations
what's most important is being able to pay my staff
Those national awards were great in the beginning
and it brings people [in] when they come to visit
it's the people of Louisville that support us
is being able to stay consistent and make the people of Louisville happy
Tyler Franklin: So now that you've somewhat established yourself here
do you feel like you want to stay with the restaurant
or are you interested in maybe being a private chef or Jack Harlow
Anthony Lamas: I've been doing this for about 35 years
I try to leave around seven or eight now and be able to see my boy before he goes to bed
and then see him in the morning before he goes to school
I just don't know where I'll be in five years
William Padmore: What's the deal with Jack Harlow
Anthony Lamas: I met him right before he blew up
you know this young artist had reached out and they want to see if we can do a little birthday party here.’ And his manager reached out
and I had done a party for one of these other bands that this manager had
he has some favorites and things like that
but we've done all his album release parties
Tyler Franklin: What's been the most rewarding part of working with Bourbon and Beyond and other large scale festivals
I want to experience it someday [in the audience]
and to be organized and to stay calm and focused
So it's another part of being a chef that I kind of grew into…Am I having fun
it's cool to hear all these musicians and songs that you grew up with

When asked how her faith and culture impact her day-to-day life and responsibilities as the executive director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry
Christina Lamas responds with a brief yet resolute
Lamas stepped into the NFCYM leadership role in 2016 — a position that required her to move across the country from her native California to the capital of the country — to oversee the administration
management and operations of the nonprofit member organization
which aims to connect and empower youth ministry leaders as they evangelize the next generation of Catholics
“When I took this position here in Washington
the thought of moving across the country by myself
and trying to figure this out without the support of my family and community that has always been a part of who I am was daunting,” Lamas told OSV News
But Lamas has been a trailblazer within her own family and community — and not one to pass on such an offer
having cultivated leadership skills like courage and commitment from a young age
especially to something as cherished by her as youth ministry
One of the eight children of Mexican immigrants from the state of Zacatecas
with a “deep-rooted Mexican culture.”
“(That culture) is present in every aspect of my life
from the moment that I was born to even today: it’s a part of who I am,” she said
welcomed Lamas and her family among its faithful
Lamas credits her mother for instilling the seeds of the Catholic faith
Whether it was by taking her to “el grupo de oración” (“the prayer group”)
or to Catholic congresses happening within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
her mother “took it upon herself to expose us” to the Catholic faith
She would embrace that faith tightly when she headed off to college at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles
Lamas recalls her parents being hesitant at the idea of her living on campus and being away from home for prolonged periods
again resolutely: “Since a very young age
I’ve been wanting to break barriers … so
‘This is what I’m doing,’ and moved forward
And that (also) opened doors for the rest of my siblings.”
Armed with two degrees — a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and psychology and a master’s degree in social work from USC — Lamas became the youth ministry and confirmation coordinator for St
She shared that this role spanned from 2004 to 2009
leading to positions at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
including as youth ministry and confirmation consultant (2009-2010) and division coordinator of youth ministry (2013-2016)
was pivotal as she built a career related to youth ministry
not only because it informed her of the spiritual needs of parishioners but also because she identified with the struggles they faced
She could relate to parents of teens who “had one foot in the U.S
and one foot in Mexico and were dealing with some of the culture that comes with it
trying to balance it all.” The work was challenging
finding profound joy in “having a conversation with parents and then helping them navigate that with their young persons.”
“That brought me closer to the community
which allowed me then to raise a group of volunteers that embraced their faith but also wanted to pass that on to the youth,” she said
Lamas now connects with youth ministry leaders across the nation
striving to offer intentional formation and committing to create initiatives so everyone feels included
“It’s always being mindful of who’s around the table
and identifying the leaders that may or may not be there,” she said
She has also been inspired by the vision expressed in “Evangelii Gaudium” about “our collective ability to empower young people to embrace their role of ‘street preachers’ or ‘callejeros de la fe’,” she said
“It brings me great joy to envision them spreading the message of Jesus throughout every street
with the support of nurturing adults through formation

His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Tashi Lhunpo Monastery
where he has been staying for the past month
and took a short drive to Sera Lachi Monastery where Prayers for his Long Life were to be offered
Having reached the monastery assembly hall His Holiness first went upstairs to meet Ganden Tri Rinpoché
as well as the abbots of eleven monastic centres of learning—Sera Mé and Sera Jé
“Only Tibet has preserved the complete teaching of the Buddha
and the rigorous study of it through reason and logic,” he told them
“Because this tradition includes very effective methods for transforming the mind
We should also do so because the understanding of the workings of our mind and emotions that is part of our spiritual heritage is not to be found in any other spiritual tradition
Our understanding of psychology provides us with excellent tools for tackling our mental afflictions and cultivating positive emotions
And after studying them thoroughly we can use these tools to transform our minds
our study of classic Buddhist texts leads to practical benefits.”
the congregation in the assembly hall recited prayers including the ‘Three Continuums’ in praise of the Buddha and the ‘Praise for the 17 Masters of Nalanda’
Having lit a butter lamp on the altar behind the throne
His Holiness took his seat facing the assembly
To his left sat the former Ganden Tri Rinpoché
the Jangtsé Chöjé and abbots of the eleven monasteries
To his right sat the present Ganden Tri Rinpoché
Officials from the Central Tibetan Administration sat with the monks in the front row of the congregation
The long-life prayer based upon the ‘Offering to the Spiritual Master’
The tea was blessed with the recitation of a verse offering it to Jé Tsongkhapa and his two chief disciples
the Father and his spiritual sons:Tsongkhapa
trailblazer of the Buddhist tradition in Tibet,Gyaltsap-jé
This sumptuous offering of food with myriad flavours,Flowers
and lamps,Actually displayed and mentally conjured up,I offer to you
Recitation of the ‘Lama Chöpa’ reached the poignant chanting of the Tsog Offering
As the Vajra Master presiding over this ceremony
recited the request for His Holiness to live long and presented symbolic offerings such as a cushion marked with a crossed-vajra emblem
Flanked by the Abbots of Sera Mé and Sera Jé he first offered a mandala to His Holiness followed by representations of the body
the seven royal emblems and eight auspicious substances
The prayer for His Holiness’s long life composed by his two Tutors was recited as representatives of International Geluk Orgainsations and sponsors of this ceremony came forward to receive His Holiness’s blessings
The new Shartsé Chöjé offered a thanksgiving mandala
Staff of Sera Monastery came forward to receive blessings
His Holiness then addressed the congregation: “Today
this Long-life Ceremony has been performed here in Sera
The monks of the three great monastic universities
Ganden and Drepung have placed firm faith and devotion in me for so many decades
I always feel close to these monastic institutions and the monks there treat me with especial respect
The trust and bond between us is unwavering
I make prayers for the well-being of monks here and in other institutions
“As a result of my past actions and prayers I have made
I have a special connection with the Tibetan people
And when I think of serving them tears come to my eyes—because of the close feelings I have for them
I will always be dedicated to the cause of Tibet and the thriving of the Dharma there
there are indications that I may live to be 110 years old
Drepung and so forth are revered by people around the world who take interest in studying Buddhist philosophy
They are attracted by the psychology that is part of our tradition
“I will live a long life and I pray that the special bond I have with Tibetans inside and outside Tibet
as well as others who treat me with respect
You’ve offered these prayers for my long life with the single-pointed dedication of everyone concerned—and I have been glad to accept them
“I can tell you that I will live to be 110 or more
I have done my best to serve the people and Buddhadharma of Tibet
You in turn have offered these prayers for my long life
I would like to thank all of you.” Applause rippled through the crowd
There were still verses from the Lama Chöpa to be recited from:
You are the Guru; you are the Deity; you are the Skyfarers and Religious Protectors. From now until enlightenment
I shall seek no refuge other than you.In this life
the intermediate state and all future lives
hold me with your hook of compassion.Free me from fears of cyclic existence and peace
grant all attainments,Be my constant friend and guard me against interference
The ceremony came to a close with a verse of dedication for the flourishing of the tradition of Jé Tsongkhapa
May all be auspicious for the Buddhas' teachings to endureOmniscient Lobsang Dr'ag-pa
through your centres of the doctrine,Being filled with hosts of monks and yogis strivingSingle-pointedly to master the three pure trainings
Teachers and students from Sera Mé and Sera Jé Monasteries posed individually and in groups to have their photographs taken with His Holiness—and he was then invited to lunch
His Holiness joined the monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery who had gathered in the debate yard from early morning offering prayers to mark the anniversary of the passing away 550 years ago of Gyalwa Gendun Drup

the Dalai Lama affirmed once again that he would live well past the age of 100
The crowd responded with boisterous applause
former Tibetan politicians and activists have been in a rush to weigh in on his future succession
My presentation will answer this question by contextualizing the 14th Dalai Lama’s legacy as a refugee who created foundational Tibetan institutions in exile for the thrivance of the Tibetan refugee community and their cause for freedom
given the Dalai Lama’s status as a formidable leader with immense global influence
he is capable of shaping and challenging the People’s Republic of China’s international relations and its legitimacy in Tibet
Understanding how and why international debates about the Dalai Lama’s succession have evolved requires a detailed consideration of his leadership accomplishments in exile

(REVIEW) It started with mass killings and the loss of independence and has resulted in over 150 self-immolations in the last 15 years and the slow erasure of a cultural identity
Tibet was an independent nation built around a peaceful buddhist tradition with a teenage leader-in-training
the Chinese invasion began — and it changed everything
The Dalai Lama has lived an extraordinary life
Believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be the 14th reincarnation of the Bodhissatva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet
he started his rigorous study of the complex religion he was destined to lead at age six
those who approach the sage 89 year-old in his flowing red and yellow robe often bow before him
A skilled author of over 100 books, accomplished academic and acquaintance to a great number of the world’s most powerful leaders, the Dalai Lama could certainly choose to speak in five-dollar words accompanied by lofty spiritual concepts. But, in his latest book, “Voice For The Voiceless,” the Dalai Lama’s uncomplicated
frank writing masterfully explains the last 70 years of Chinese and Tibetan history in a style accessible to those with very little knowledge of Eastern geopolitics or the Buddhist tradition
The book functions mostly as a documentation of the Dalai Lama’s diplomatic efforts
but it does contain one major announcement: the 15th Dalai Lama will be born in the free world
China has tried for years to garner further control of Tibet by means of the Buddhist tradition
the CCP abducted the child who was named to be the new Panchen Lama
a reincarnate figure who would traditionally have helped identify the next Dalai Lama
and a fake Panchen Lama has been named by the Chinese government in his place–a move which is almost certainly an attempt to establish the CCP’s very own Dalai Lama after the 14th passes
With the additional order that the next Dalai Lama be identified by the Gaden Phodrang Trust (The Office of The Dalai Lama) and that they should simply “follow the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past Tibetan Buddhist tradition,” the Dalai Lama has precluded any trust of a Chinese-appointed Lama
Despite being written by a deeply religious man
and holding a crucial announcement for Tibetan Buddhists
“Voice For The Voiceless,” is not a particularly religious book
While Buddhist principles are certainly the guiding factors for how the Dalai Lama acts
and while the mass majority of Tibetans are committed Buddhists
“Voice For The Voiceless,” focuses on documenting the ongoing political struggle of the Tibetan people against the Chinese Communist party.
The Dalai Lama’s story is one characterized by patient
He was only 15 when Chairman Mao and his People’s Liberation Army invaded Tibet
He spent the 1950’s trying to negotiate with this new occupier all while trying to earn his Geshe Laram degree — essentially a doctorate of divinity
China had been so resistant to Tibetan efforts for an agreement
that the bodily safety of the Dalai Lama was called into question
misinformation and heartbreak — which characterized the beginning of the Dalai Lama’s time in leadership — proved to set the stage for a lifetime of frustrating diplomatic efforts
“In all other aspects of my life and in all other domains of my work
I have engaged with people who have shown a commitment to shared vision
the honesty to express one’s thoughts even in disagreement
and the willingness to truly engage and learn.” In contrast to the rest of his life
he said that the CCP leaders from Mao to Xi “have only a mouth to speak but no ear to listen.”
The Dalai Lama emphasizes that the only real path forward is for everybody involved to start treating each other with the respect they deserve as fellow human beings
“I remain committed to the belief that our problems can be solved only through negotiations
held in an atmosphere of sincerity and openness
for the benefit of both the Tibetan and Chinese people,” he wrote
Cognizant of the way hate from oppressors can quickly turn into hate for oppressors
he repeatedly makes clear that he is deeply appreciative of the many Chinese supporters he and his fellow Tibetans have met over the years and that he does not blame the Chinese people for the errors of their leaders
He also names Chinese citizens in his list of those who are actively being oppressed by the CCP and says he has “deep empathy” for them
The Dalai Lama also explained that he does not advocate for Tibetan independence in the most radical sense
Instead he fights for “genuine national regional autonomy” in which Tibet would be governed democratically and have its own judicial system
Tibet would be in charge of its own religion
China would simply manage the region’s defense and international relations
but as someone who knows the feeling of having governance forced upon him all too well
he does not say that these conditions are the absolutely correct ones
he makes clear that neither the CCP nor he himself should decide the destiny of the Tibetan people
While the Dalai Lama expresses disappointment at the fact that he will likely not return to Tibet in his lifetime
he is hopeful for the future and believes time will bring about justice
totalitarianism definitely does not have time on its side

Designed and produced by ACW
the Dalai Lama officially recognized him as the lama’s reincarnation
He just celebrated his 18th birthday and in a few months he will move to the Mindrolling Monastery in northern India after graduating from high school
Dorje currently lives in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, and the northern India monastery, located in the Himalayan foothills, is more than 7,200 miles away from his home, according to The Associated Press.
The teen’s birthday celebration also acted as an enthronement ceremony for the aspiring spiritual leader
At the ceremony Dorje sat at on a throne looking out at the nearly 1,000 people who were in attendance at the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota
Near his throne there was an altar decorated with golden statures of the Buddha as well as flowers and fruits
The attendees at the event participated in traditional dance
“The event also symbolized a pivotal transition while he prepares to move to a monastery in northern India, where he will continue his spiritual training. As a lama, he is expected to live his life as spiritual teacher, leader, or guide,” according to Newsweek.
Dorje also received typical birthday presents from his friends such as shaker bottles and a gift card to Chipotle Mexican Grill
After several years of contemplation and spiritual learning he wants to return to teach in the state’s Buddhist community
“It is one of the largest Tibetan communities in the U.S.
playing a key role in preserving cultural practices in the diaspora,” according to Newsweek
He wants to follow the example of other spiritual leaders such as the Dalai Lama and Gandhi and “become a leader of peace,” per the AP.
The identification of a lama is based on spiritual signs and visions
“Dorje was about 4 months old when he was identified by Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche
a venerated master of Tibetan Buddhism and leader of the Nyingma lineage
He was later confirmed by several lamas as the eighth Terchen Taksham Rinpoche — the first one was born in 1655,” per the AP
After he was officially recognized by the Dalai Lama at the age of 2
he was taken to meet the leader when he visited Wisconsin in 2010
The Dalai Lama advised Dorje’s parents to let him stay in the U.S
so he could perfect his English before sending him to a monastery
Dorje is now fluent in English and Tibetan, and was officially enthroned in India in 2019, per the AP.
Though the young buddhist lama has been away of his future as a spiritual leader for most of his life
listening to rap and playing football and video games
the teenager is a big sports fan cheering for the Minnesota Timberwolves
He is on his high school’s football team and plays left guard
Dorje’s childhood was filled with early morning recitation of ancient prayers and the memorization of Buddhist scriptures
Oftentimes his memorization of scripture would be rewarded by his father with Pokemon cards
“For years, he has followed the same routine. He wakes up to recite sacred texts and then attends school, followed by football practice. He returns home for tutoring about Tibetan history and Buddhism. Then he might practice calligraphy or run on a treadmill while listening to BossMan Dlow, Rod Wave and other rappers,” per the AP.

Honey bees are managed by humans on all continents except Antarctica
leading to an exceptional database of colony growth and survival
Honey bee colony losses in the United States are approximately 50% annually
and losses in other countries range from 10% to 60%
and nutritional stresses alongside immense pressure from diverse parasites and pathogens
The combination of RNA viruses and parasitic mites that vector these viruses plays a primary role in colony losses
we discuss virus infection with and without mite vectors
and the roles of managed beekeeping in mitigating and aggravating the impacts of Varroa mites and viral disease
we contrast the direct impacts of Varroa mites while feeding on their hosts with the far more damaging role these mites play as vectors of disease
We will focus on the DWV group since this species is most prevalent and impactful
All of these transmission routes impact honey bees
but current research suggests that their impacts on colony health pale in the face of vector-driven transmission by parasitic Varroa mites
Infestation of worker honey bees thanks to infective mites repeatedly biting new hosts
and viruses leads to an intense combination of both vector-borne and social transmission
Varroa are highly attracted to drones when they are plentiful during the spring mating season
the absolute parasite burden is high on drones and low on workers
While drones attract this parasitism within their colony
they are unlikely candidates to infect their worker nestmates with viruses since they do not engage in colony maintenance tasks and receive but do not provide food donations during trophallactic events
Infected drones nonetheless pose a risk to the community of colonies surrounding them through their mating
Spring mite parasitism focused on drone bees drives vertical (venereal) transmission through queen mating to her offspring
These infections impact subsequent colonies
Seasonal shift of mites from heavily parasitized drone adults to more numerous worker adults
Vertical transmission pathways likely aid the long-term persistence of covert viral infections in honey bee populations (Chen et al., 2006; Peck and Seeley, 2019; Kulhanek et al., 2021)
Beekeepers who allow individual colonies to develop heavy infestation in their dense apiaries may be benefiting mites and viruses
healthy host colonies to accept them after their original host colony collapses
business decisions intrinsic to beekeeping are at odds with biosecurity and disease prevention
beekeepers keep tens if not hundreds of colonies in close contact in working apiaries
Beekeepers also routinely split colonies to recover from losses
promoting intra-operation dispersal of DWV and Varroa
the sale of live colonies between operations promotes inter-operational dispersal at a continental scale
Infected and infectious colonies sold into new operations can bring pathogens into naive
From the perspective of pathogens and parasites
which need to disperse in order to acquire new hosts
these management strategies and sales provide a crucial lending hand on behalf of mites and viruses
Figure 3. Multiple routes of movement by mites and vectors. effective antiviral drugs could help release honey bees from some of the costs of persistent mite infection
This review highlights disease models for this complex pathogen-vector-host triad in light of ecological and economic importance
Many questions remain open in light of this triad and the protection of honey bee health
A few of the more pressing questions are below:
● Which current beekeeping strategies exacerbate parasites and viruses in colonies
beekeepers split colonies for sale or to replace lost colonies
but splitting will inevitably aid in the artificial dispersal of mites and viruses
Which new practices would allow the movement of bees and re-use of equipment while reducing the risk of infection
● What are the carrying capacities of landscapes with respect to unhealthy disease pressures
● Varroa is a biological vector of some but not all DWV strains
roughly half of the known honey bee viruses seem to be vectored by Varroa; why are these distinct from other bee viruses
● Continued work is needed to understand colony components that harbor and cause infection to new bees
● What are the roles of environmental stressors such as poor nutrition
and co-infection in increasing honey bee susceptibility to viruses
● How can beekeepers reduce viral impacts with prevention

The story of the Dalai Lama is extraordinary
tensions between the Tibetans and Chinese authorities had escalated dramatically
When rumours spread that the Chinese planned to kidnap or harm the Dalai Lama
thousands of Tibetans surrounded his palace
Fearing for his life and concerned about potential bloodshed
the 23-year-old Dalai Lama made the difficult decision to flee Tibet to seek asylum in India; a moment proving to be a dramatic and pivotal point in history

he disguised himself as a soldier and slipped out of the palace with a small group of advisers and security personnel
They travelled mostly at night through harsh Himalayan terrain and faced extreme cold
and the constant threat of being discovered by Chinese forces
The trek covered approximately 800 kilometres over two weeks
crossing mountain passes as high as 5800 metres
The young leader’s sudden transition from ruling a nation to becoming a refugee was profound
Today he is revered as one of the world’s most respected spiritual leaders and advocates for peace

calm” is a phrase or concept that evokes the idea of maintaining inner peace or composure in turbulent
Every one of us experiences chaos in our lives
But how we respond is interesting and can be transformational
One of the core messages of the Dalia Lama is that “peace is not the absence of chaos
but the ability to remain present and grounded within it”
The ability to stay grounded and balanced during emotional upheavals
can make the difference to how we move forward in our lives
remaining calm in chaos is seen as a key strength — it instils confidence in others and leads to better decision-making
when all about them are losing their heads
But it’s also an opportunity to test their own resilience

We often hear our public figures talk about the challenges of dealing with social media commentary
These days even our kids aren’t immune to faceless bullying and hate
which has become a dangerous — and at times devastating — scourge of our society
I read a verse that said: “People insult those who are silent
There is none in the world who is not blamed.”
Another talked about the concept of a mind that remains unshaken by the eight worldly winds: gain/loss
The verse read: “Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm
even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame.”
I wonder if our politicians can make sense of these
During an interview recently I was asked about how to best deal with pressure and stress.
The first point I made was that it is in times of pressure a person’s true character is revealed.
Over and over again, I see how people react or respond under pressure. This is a constant eye-opener in how to — and how not to — behave under stress.

Credit: Justin Langer/SuppliedThe second part of my answer concentrated on how I have personally learned about the critical factor of trusting processes within your control to get through storms; storms that never last forever.
After this week I could have simplified my response by the simple words: “Amidst the chaos, calm.”
These historical concepts that have been taught by all leading spiritual teachers for centuries make so much sense, and yet they are often so hard to administer, let alone master.
Next time you are faced with pressure and stress, take time to breath, smile and deal with the problem, one day, one moment, at a time.

When asked about the book at a press briefing on Monday
a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said the Dalai Lama “is a political exile who is engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion
What the Dalai Lama says and does cannot change the objective fact of Tibet’s prosperity and development.”
Beijing said in February it hoped the Dalai Lama would “return to the right path” and that it was open to discussing his future if he met such conditions as recognising that Tibet and Taiwan are inalienable parts of China
whose sole legal government is that of the People’s Republic of China
That proposal has been rejected by the Tibetan parliament-in-exile in India
the Dalai Lama says he has received numerous petitions for more than a decade from a wide spectrum of Tibetan people
