D’Avilla Joins the Fire as U22 Initiative Signing
CHICAGO (April 1, 2025) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has acquired midfielder Dje D’Avilla from União Desportiva de Leiria of Liga Portugal 2 via transfer. D’Avilla will occupy a U22 initiative slot and an international roster position. His contract with the Fire will run through the 2028 season with a Club option for 2029. Per Club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We’re really looking forward to having Dje join us here in Chicago,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “He’s an exciting player who has quite a bit of experience despite his young age, having already played in important matches in multiple leagues around the world. We’re confident that his quality and presence in the midfield will be a tremendous asset to the group.”
D’Avilla, 21, joins Chicago after spending the past three seasons with UD Leiria, playing in over 50 matches across all competitions during that time. D’Avilla has had a breakout season so far in 2024-25, appearing in 26 matches for Leiria, including 23 regular season games and three appearances in the Portuguese Cup.
“We would like to thank UD Leiria for working so closely with us to complete this transfer,” said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Gregg Broughton. “Dje is an excellent player, and we understand that it is an important time in their season. This opens the door to having a strong relationship with Leiria moving forward.”
Transaction: Chicago Fire FC acquires midfielder Dje D’Avilla via transfer. D’Avilla’s contract will run through the 2028 season with a Club option for 2029.
The four-storey building serves as a hinge between these two urban conditions – a developing area with tall buildings and a narrow street with squat houses. This urban friction is addressed by Bureau des Mésarchitectures with a panelled facade of precise geometry, materiality and rhythm. The curved footprint and overlapping concrete panels of the building address both sides of the site's conflicting realities.
© Francisco NogueiraThe pre-existing building, an early 20th century house with a characteristic tiled roof and yellow fa.ade, has been transformed into two apartments, a two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor and a one-bedroom apartment above. Meanwhile the new extension includes five apartments, two four-bedroom apartments, two two-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom apartment. The old and new parts of the project are connected by a common stairwell.

Chicago signed midfielder Dje D’Avilla from UD Leiria in Portugal’s second tier of soccer
News of D’Avilla’s move to Chicago was first reported by A Bola in Portugal
D’Avilla will occupy a U22 Initiative Slot and an international roster spot while his contract with Chicago will run through the 2028 MLS season with a club option for 2029
“We’re really looking forward to having Dje join us here in Chicago,” said Chicago Fire FC director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter in the club’s announcement of the signing
“He’s an exciting player who has quite a bit of experience despite his young age
having already played in important matches in multiple leagues around the world
We’re confident that his quality and presence in the midfield will be a tremendous asset to the group.”
has made 23 league appearances for UD Leiria this season after spending half of last season on loan with Coimbra in Portugal’s third tier before rejoining Leiria at the beginning of 2024
D’Avilla signed his first professional deal with Stella Club d’Adjaméin the Ivory Coast and signed with fellow Ivorian side LS Attécoube in 2020 before joining Al Hilal United in the UAE in 2021
where he played until signing with Leiria in the 2022 summer transfer window
D’Avilla reportedly had a €15 release clause on his contract after signing a long-term extension with Leiria in 2024
The Fire needed another body in the midfield room, and D’Avilla is the type of talent who should be ready to play MLS minutes once he arrives. D’Avilla was linked to a move to English Championship side Leeds United in January
but Chicago has beaten the EFL side to the Ivorian midfielder’s signature and he will be with the Fire in 2025
This front office already has a good track record when bringing in young talent from the lower leagues in Portugal as right back Leonardo Barroso is already a starter after joining the Fire in the offseason
D’Avilla is expected to be an impact player once he gets comfortable in MLS
Considering the early season injuries to Brian Gutiérrez and Kellyn Acosta
D’Avilla is a welcome addition to Chicago’s roster
What’s On Tap Next? The Fire will be in New Jersey to take on the New York Red Bulls on April 5
The match is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m
CT and will be broadcast on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+.

It was a very unusual week in Portugal’s Liga II
The top teams were shocked and none of them won
but still managed to stay leaders at the end of round 13
continued the rough patch they are going through with a 3-0 loss away from home against Feirense
which brings up the question: is Penafiel’s promotion drive running out of steam
PortuGOAL rounds up the weekend action in the Segunda Liga.
also took a huge hit this week with a thumping 5-0 loss against the historical União de Leiria
Daniel dos Anjos scored a hat-trick in 21 minutes to give the Leiria team the win
Académico de Viseu lost against Torreense in the battle for the promotion spots
In a very well-played match between two contenders for promotion
the Western Portugal team got the best of the Vitiathus
promoted after an excellent campaign with the club’s U23 team last season
has now guided the historical club from Torres Vedras to 4 wins and a draw in their last five matches. There are only six points separating the top 6 teams in Liga II and we are in for a hell of a fight for promotion.
at the basement things are already on fire
Oliveirense are an interesting team because it is not hard to criticize them
They are by far the worst attack in the championship and also have the worst defence
There is no light at the end of the tunnel
maybe only a red light that will guide them straight into relegation if things don’t start going well right now
They suffered four more goals against Alverca and have only six points in 13 games
FC Porto B and Mafra are also digging their own graves
The satellite team of FC Porto are facing their worst year ever
A team that was meant to be competitive and develop young talents on a professional level seems to abandon this idea week in week out
With poor tactics and a coach who doesn’t value youth
it is hard to implement the ideas that the administration has for this team
Mafra lost again after starting the game by going 1-0 up in the first minute
they seem to crumble and fall whenever they create an advantage
Portimonense finally won a match and left the relegation spots
I don’t know if the coach is reading my articles but their defence showed real improvement and understood that in this competitive championship
Could Portimonense aim for higher spots after this win
The former Benfica striker led União de Leiria to a shock win against the high-flying Benfica B with a 21-minute hat-trick
His first half performance was of a level that is hard to find in secondary championships such as the II Liga
The Brazilian striker is very experienced in this league
but it seems that this may be the year where he can solidify himself as a top striker
having notched 5 goals in 11 games for União de Leiria
With a powerful shot and amazing physicality
Daniel dos Anjos has all the ingredients to be on the top charts this season and
the question is: can Daniel dos Anjos be the spearhead that drives a promotion charge for União de Leiria

Retail technology news and views for omnichannel retailers
Sensei has partnered with MC Sonae on the opening of a new Continente Bom Dia location
pitched as the world’s largest autonomous supermarket
In a LinkedIn post, Sensei said: "This revolutionary achievement is a record breaker on so many levels
setting a new benchmark for the future of retail: 1.676 cameras; 1,200 sq m2; 2,000 scales; 21 servers; 10.000 SKU’s."
"With democratic entry (no app or card tapping needed)
bringing the shopping journey to a whole new level."
without changing anything - except for the groundbreaking checkout process
"This new store represents a significant milestone in the innovation and modernisation of the retail sector
combining the support of our employees with Sensei's technology to create a unique shopping experience," said Luís Moutinho
"We are excited to witness how this innovative store will serve the community and are confident in the experience it will provide to our customers."
Sensei was among the finalists at the sixth edition of the RTIH Innovation Awards
The awards celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world
In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”
He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”
“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”
Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended November's gathering.

POR – Antunes (Bruno Fernandes), 31st minute: Building up beginning with the ‘keeper, Portugal was methodical in the final third, patiently making moves before sending a long cross from the right to the left side. Upon receiving the booming pass, Antunes volleyed a shot towards the goal from outside the box, where it slipped through the hands of U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath. USA 1, POR 1 FINAL
USA – Ethan Horvath, 45th minute: As Bruma made a dangerous run to the net, Horvath came out to play the ball, diving in front of the attacker’s feet to push the ball away and stop a dangerous opportunity for the Portuguese.
POR – Beto, 52nd minute: Receiving a pass from Eric Lichaj at the 18, Cameron Carter Vickers sprinted towards the end line and sent an on-target cross to Tyler Adams at the far post. Beto dove and got one hand on the ball, just enough to pat it out-of-bounds and maintain the deadlock.
POR – Beto, 71st minute: Lynden Gooch played the ball into the box after a USA free kick, finding Carter-Vickers positioned at the far post. Standing a step away from the goal line, he attempted to trap the ball with his chest, but Beto got a foot in to boot away the goalscoring opportunity.

The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre was reopened to the public yesterday
following the completion of renovations that began last December
The ceremony was attended by the Portuguese architect and sculptor Cristina Maria de Faria Rocha Leiria
who designed the 20-metre statue of Kun Iam that rises above the centre on the Macao waterfront.
The statue and centre were first built in 1999
Kun Iam (Guanyin in romanised Mandarin) is the Cantonese name of the Buddhist divinity (or bodhisattva) known as Avalokiteśvara
Kun Iam – who has a traditional association with Macao – is often presented as genderless in Buddhist
The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre was established with a “message of solidarity and rapprochement between people” that goes “beyond Buddhism,” according to the Cultural Affairs Bureau, which runs the facility. Displays and educational materials cover both Western and Asian philosophy and religious thought, but with a particular emphasis on the teachings of Buddha, Lao Tse and Confucius.
There is also a Contemplation Room for meditation and reading, and a multipurpose hall used for conferences and film screenings.
To mark the reopening, an exhibition of Kun Iam inspired sculptures by Rocha Leiria was also unveiled. The exhibition will run until 13 March and admission is free. The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, including public holidays, but is closed on Fridays.

Text description provided by the architects. The site is on the outskirts of Leiria, in a high position overlooking the city.
The functions are banal: a house divided in private area with bedrooms, and social area with living-rooms. The private areas are at street level under the plot, around a central courtyard with rooms opening to private patios in a intimate environment. The living rooms are around a void, that collects light from above and gazes the castle at the city centre.

A fire fighting helicopter works to contain a wildfire in Leiria
Five years after a disastrous wildfire claimed 64 lives
Portugal is rethinking how it battles climate change-worsened blazes
Portugal - Along the main motorway in Portugal's rural interior
The smell may be pleasant - but it is also a source of fear for local residents
Stands of eucalyptus - a fast-growing but highly flammable Australian native tree - helped fuel a massive wildfire in 2017 that killed 64 people and injured more than 250 in the town of Pedrogao Grande
Many of the victims burned to death in their cars trying to escape the blaze on national road EN236-1
now known as the "road of death" after the worst disaster in modern Portuguese history
"This is a road you don't want to be on in case of fire," said forest engineer Luis Paulo Pita
before turning his car onto a gravel side road leading deeper into a forest in Coimbra district
where he is working on fire prevention efforts
The firefighter-turned-engineer is part of a national drive - which brings together civil servants
experts and communities - that aims to reshape fire management in Portugal and avoid a repeat of 2017
the government banned new eucalyptus plantings
announced sweeping land reforms and invested in a range of projects to protect local communities most at risk of wildfires in Portugal's central and northern districts
The country has also pivoted from a focus on firefighting to fire prevention
largely by experimenting with innovations to make the land less flammable
But residents say that milder weather conditions are the main reason the country hasn't seen another deadly blaze like that in 2017 - and experts and officials warn that funding and political will to tackle fire threats are waning five years on
as a series of large wildfires swept through north and central Portugal this month
injuring dozens of people and uprooting hundreds as firefighters struggled to extinguish flames amid a European heatwave that is predicted to trigger more blazes
most residents are now aware of what they should do to stay safe from fire threats
such as knowing good escape routes and taking refuge in areas with water or little vegetation
I can say that they already forgot 2017," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation
gesturing to wildly overgrown forested areas that post a blaze risk near villages
As part of its new approach to tackling wildfires
Portugal has established an integrated fire agency (AGIF) uniting conservation officials
and private forestry firms to streamline both prevention and firefighting efforts
said too much money had been spent previously on tackling the fallout from fires instead of addressing their causes
The AGIF now urges communities to clear land of scrub
create evacuation plans for high-risk villages
and issue permits for controlled burning of debris
The agency also has taught forest engineers and firefighters how to create fire breaks through prescribed burns
the country registered the lowest number of rural fires in the last decade
according to data from the Forest Fire Information Management System (SGIF) in Portugal
as young people seek opportunities in the country's cities
About 30% of rural properties in Portugal are now unclaimed
with disused property rapidly accumulating flammable undergrowth
only 20% of AGIF's fire prevention goals have been achieved
despite growing knowledge and willpower to act
The coronavirus pandemic and other competing government priorities also mean "we lost a lot of time ..
(and) the political priority is no longer the fire," he added
even though a share of COVID-19 recovery funds have been earmarked for preventing and fighting forest fires
Firefighters from Austria and Germany are training in Portugal
and the country is set to host an international wildfire conference in 2023
But as global warming helps drive harsher wildfires
Oliveira fears many governments will be too busy battling blazes to spare funds and thought for better prevention
lamenting that forest engineers and land owners doing prevention work are "never the heroes"
While eucalyptus forests are blamed as a major contributor to wildfires in Portugal
forest engineers such as Pita say how land is managed is the key issue
Residents in fire-prone areas complain no one pays much attention to forests except when they're on fire
The region's landscape is dotted with abandoned farms
New eucalyptus trees sprout from burnt saplings
the species is adapted to surviving and recovering after fire in Coimbra
"They've given up on the territory," charged Joao Camargo
an environmental campaigner with Portuguese non-profit Climaximo
saying rural areas were increasingly economically and politically irrelevant to policymakers as the country's population heads to its cities
AGIF sees reversing the rural exodus and revitalising agriculture as key to cutting fire risks
you have to eat (from) it," said Jose Gaspar
a civil engineer at the Agrarian School of Coimbra who also teaches at the national firefighting school nearby
Rural shepherds have received subsidies to run their herds
by which time the effort should be self-sufficient
Allowing local people to take charge in reducing fire risk on land they manage trumps a top-down fire prevention approach
residents of Ferraria de Sao Joao - a village about 24 km from Pedrogao Grande that only narrowly escaped the same fate - took it on themselves to cut a eucalpytus-free buffer zone around their community
The mental scars from the 2017 wildfire run deep in Pedrogao Grande
where locals say they feel abandoned by the government and that promises have fallen short
the ban on new eucalyptus trees does nothing to cut risks from plantations already in place before 2017
meaning the town remains surrounded by eucalyptus
said the continuing fire risk faced by villagers was "soul-wrenching"
with big fires still possible in dry and hot conditions
Rui Rosinha was a volunteer firefighter rescuing people from the blazes
he and his fire crew found themselves surrounded by flames after their vehicle got into an accident
The 44-year-old was badly burned and ended up in a coma for three months
He then spent another three months in hospital and underwent about a dozen surgeries to treat his injuries
A fellow firefighter in the car - a childhood friend - also burned and died shortly afterward in the hospital
"My life changed completely after 2017," said Rosinha
His injuries mean he has had to retire from firefighting
Rosinha now advocates for more fire prevention measures - and believes the government has not done enough
