Dear Reader,Unfortunately our comment platform isn\'t available at the moment due to issues with our paywall and authentication vendor. Thanks for your patience. The Napa-based wine company announced in a news release that the two appointed directors will help the wine company continue to grow. Napa winery Fior Di Sole has hired two directors for its newly restructured sales department. Lana Lobao will be the new director of private label brands and export sales while Sergio Serafini will head as the director of national sales. Lobao has been employed at Fior di Sole for over 15 years, according to a Sept. 2 news release, and will work to expand the company’s private wine labels and export efforts. Seragini has worked in wine sales for over 20 years in the industry, most recently serving as the company’s western regional sales manager. Previous roles include sales positions at Wine Hooligans, Classic Wines of California and Epic Wines and Spirits. "We believe that the restructuring of our Sales Department, along with the expertise that Lana and Sergio bring, will propel Fior di Sole into its next chapter of growth,“ founders Valentina Guolo and Stefano Migotta said in the release. “Their leadership will be instrumental in continuing to elevate our brands and expanding our reach in both domestic and international markets." The release also said this restructuring will help continue to grow the family-owned and operated winery based in Napa. Volume 16 - 2022 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fnbeh.2022.901425 Observational studies of long-term users of ayahuasca suggest an increase in resilience via improvements in emotion and cognition Ayahuasca has also demonstrated clinical antidepressant effects in human and animal studies; however its potential prophylactic action in depression has not been previously studied this experimental study sought to evaluate the potential prophylactic effects of repeated and long-term ayahuasca use subjected to a protocol for induction of depressive-like behavior some juvenile marmosets were kept in their family groups (GF = 7) the animals were removed from the family and kept socially isolated part of the isolated animals made up the group in which ayahuasca was administered (AG AG animals took ayahuasca (1.67 mL/300g body weight) at weeks 4 (before isolation) More adaptive stress response was observed for the AG when compared to the IG The AG showed higher cortisol reactivity and fecal cortisol levels than IG AG animals showed no signs of anhedonia and no increase in chronic stress-related behaviors ayahuasca seems to promote the expression of resilient responses buffering the emergence of depressive-like behaviors and cortisol alterations associated with major depression These results are encouraging for further research on the prophylactic use of psychedelics to prevent psychopathologies associated with chronic stress Ayahuasca can induce some mild acute side effects, such as increased blood pressure and heart rate, vomiting and nausea, as well as a brief increase in anxiety (Riba et al., 2001; dos Santos et al., 2012). However, the toxicity of ayahuasca is low (Bouso et al., 2011) and does not induce dose tolerance (Gable, 2007; Fábregas et al., 2010) making it an interesting substance to be tested in prophylactic protocols despite its acute side effects Given the advantage of validating protocols that prevent the incidence of MDD and the potential therapeutic and protective effects of ayahuasca the potential prophylactic effects of ayahuasca in the emergence of a typical depressive state in marmosets were evaluated during the use of a protocol for induction of depressive-like behavior It was hypothesized that the prophylactic use of ayahuasca will increase resilience in juvenile marmosets and prevent the onset of fecal cortisol changes and the emergence of depressive-like behaviors The animals were housed at the Primatology Center of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte which has followed the standards of the National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation (law No entitled “Lei Arouca”) and international standards of the Animal Behavior Society and International Primatological Society The experimental protocols of this study were approved by the Ethics Committee on Animal Use according to protocol 032/2014 and addendum No and the diet was based on a specific small animal feed supplemented with a multivitamin complex and glycogen The animals were taken care of by a veterinarian The breeding house kept the animals in natural conditions of light The animals in family groups were housed in two cages measuring approximately 3.0 × 2.0 × 1.0 m each connected by a door that allowed them to pass through while the socially isolated animals were kept in single cages with dimensions of 3.0 × 2.0 × 1.0 m there was a barred door where water (ad libitum) and food were served The cages had a grid roof that allowed animals to be exposed to the outside environment receiving natural light The cages were enriched with branches of natural trees and a nest box for the rest and comfort of the animal The design was based on previous studies that have validated and tested the induction of depressive-like behavior in juvenile marmosets through chronic social isolation (Galvão-Coelho et al., 2017; da Silva et al., 2019) (Figure 1) the baseline phase (BP) is 4 weeks of every other day of data collection which was followed by social isolation stress for depression induction (isolated phase- 9 weeks) This group had three ayahuasca gavages: 1st Gav (27th day of BP); 2nd and 3rd Gav (along isolated phase being 25 days after the previous administration) animals that were submitted to these same study phases did not receive the ayahuasca prophylactic intervention the animals remained in their family group for 13 weeks without any intervention FW is the final week of the study with daily data collection Eighteen animals were randomly divided into three groups: In the first the animals were in their family groups for 4 weeks when behavioral and endocrine (fecal cortisol) profiles were recorded the animals were socially isolated for 9 weeks (Isolated Phase) a protocol for inducing a depression-like behavior state the animals did not have visual contact with conspecifics but auditory and olfactory contact was possible there was no spatial constraint during the isolated phase these animals received the first prophylactic administration of ayahuasca via gavage (1st gavage) then two more gavages were made 25 and 50 days after the 1st gavage (totaling three gavages throughout the study) Gavage is a common veterinary technique used in marmosets and other animals where the animal is immobilized by the veterinarian and a liquid is introduced into the stomach through a flexible tube placed in the mouth by a second person The ayahuasca brew was donated for this study free of charge by Barquinha Temple an ayahuasca religious institution located in Ji-Paraná/Roraima Brazil The same batch was used throughout the study and for all animals both boiled in water (100°C) for 60 h The final solution was stored in glass bottles in the refrigerator The main compounds in ayahuasca were measured using mass spectrometry resulting in the following values: 0.36 ± 0.01 mg/mL DMT 0.24 ± 0.03 mg/mL harmaline and 0.20 ± 0.05 mg/mL tetrahydroharmine The ayahuasca solution was stored in the refrigerator at a temperature near 4°C The administered dose was 1.67 mL/300 g of marmoset body weight. The marmoset dose was initially based on the dose used in Brazilian religious ceremonies; there is around 1 mL of ayahuasca/kg. However, we adapted the human dose to the physiological characteristics of the marmoset using an allometric scale that considers metabolic differences between species and was described by Pachaly (2006): (1) basal metabolic indices of humans of a common 70 kg individual 70 × 700.75 = 1.694 kCal; (2) basal metabolic indices of the common marmoset (300 g) 70 × 0.30.75 = 28.38 kCal; (3) dose of ayahuasca in mL per kCal 100 mL/1.694 kCal = 0.06 mL/kCal; and (4) equivalent dose for a common marmoset 0.06 mL/kCal × 28.35 kCal = 1.67 mL The frequency of ayahuasca administration used in this study was based on an average frequency of ayahuasca consumption in Brazilian religious rituals and psychedelic-based psychotherapy models (Carhart-Harris et al., 2021). The administration of ayahuasca was performed by veterinarians and researchers via gavage (da Silva et al., 2019) Table 1. Behaviors based on Stevenson and Poole's (1976) ethogram adapted to the stress context (Galvão-Coelho et al., 2017) The quantitative dependent variables in this study are behavior and fecal cortisol data. Since there is large variability across individuals in behavioral and cortisol responses to social isolation (Galväo-Coelho et al., 2008; Galvão-Coelho et al., 2012; de Sousa et al., 2015) we have used in statistical analysis the percentage of variation of cortisol and behaviors between baseline and the last week of study (week 9) The categorical independent variables are the groups (FG Reactivity for each subject was calculated as follows: ([∑ FW − ∑ BP]*100) / ∑ BP and cortisol by ([Md(FW)-Md(BP)]*100)/Md(BP) We have used, in the descriptive statistics, the median as a measure of central tendency and interquartile range, which shows the spread of the middle half of the distribution to the second or third quartiles. There is supplementary material (Supplementary Table S2) containing the values of central tendency and variability for all behaviors and cortisol by study phase For the behaviors classified by Boruta as important or in indecision shadow the nonparametric multivariate Kruskal-Wallis test were applied to compare the reactivity between the groups the effect size is reported as η2 for Kruskal-Wallis and r for the Mann-Whitney test The η2 effect size was calculated as η2 = H-k+1n-k The r effect size was calculated as r = Zn where Z is the Z-statistic from the posthoc test and n is the number of observations the significance level considered was p ≤ 0.05 (two-tailed) Importance of behaviors for group discrimination as assessed by the Boruta algorithm Green boxplots: important variables; yellow boxplots: undecided relevance; red boxplots: not important variables; gray boxplots: shuffled data at three levels of importance—high importance (low shuffle) and low importance (high shuffle); black dots: outlier The algorithm uses such shuffled data to decide on the importance classification The score of importance is given on the x-axis n = 7); each black dot represents an individual *Kruskal Wallis non-parametric multivariate test showing the difference in the individual behavior of the final week compared to the baseline phase ([∑ FW − ∑ BP]*100) / ∑ BP and family group (FG n = 7); each black dot represents an individual *Kruskal Wallis non-parametric multivariate test p ≤ 0,05 showing the difference in the individual cortisol levels of the final week compared to the baseline phase ([Md(FW) − Md (BP)]*100) / Md(BP) We observed an apparent prophylactic action associated with ayahuasca administration via increased resilience and stimulating cortisol reactivity during chronic social isolation jacchus administered with ayahuasca demonstrated a more adaptive stress response than isolated animals without this intervention as well as behavioral reactivity and fecal cortisol levels similar to those of animals living in their families In marmosets, autogrooming is a stress-reduction behavior (Neumann et al., 2001; Burkett et al., 2016). In this study, the AG showed lower reactivity to autogrooming when compared to the IG, and similar to FG. Thus, ayahuasca might be mediating resilience growth through a complementary mechanism to autogrooming. A previous study with marmosets and ayahuasca did not observe modulation of autogrooming (da Silva et al., 2019) this is the first study to investigate the long-term action of ayahuasca on cortisol the low number of animals may interfere with the interpretation of statistical results and make them not fully generalizable such as preferential access and competition for preferred foods in sucrose intake in the non-isolated control group individual differences in innate coping strategies and natural changes due to shifts in developmental stages the application of a single intervention schedule (dose and frequency) is also a limitation a higher sample size with the inclusion of females and different age groups as well as a protocol with sham gavages in the stressed group and different doses and frequencies of treatment with ayahuasca are recommended despite the stability of the juvenile II stage investigations considering a month-to-month age could make the data more accurate This is particularly important because the juvenile stage is a phase of transition and transformation although such changes are characteristic of adolescent animal models and are also present when studying mental disorders in the human species To our knowledge this is the first experimental study that has tested a classic psychedelic in a prophylactic regimen an intervention applied before the onset of some symptoms and attenuating their onset in situations of chronic stress The evidence presented could stimulate a promising new area of human research with classic psychedelics The raw data Bolsonaro,” the rightwing rocker declared in his YouTube endorsement “Bolsonaro is the only chance of something new.” On a recent afternoon, however, the gravel-voiced singer sank into a chair on the same terrace and admitted to a severe case of buyer’s remorse Not to mention a series of bizarre gaffes – including sharing a pornographic video with his 3.4 million Twitter followers – that have led some to question whether Bolsonaro will even see out his four-year term “Not even Syd Barrett ever had such a bad trip,” Lobão said has emerged as one of the rightwing populist’s most ferocious critics assailing his administration in a succession of searing media appearances Opinion polls show Bolsonaro’s approval ratings have plunged since his 1 January inauguration with 32% of Brazilians now considering his government bad or awful compared with 11% when he took power More than half of Brazil now says it does not trust the president “It is the worst start to a presidency since the return of democracy [in 1990],” said Mauro Paulino “A lot would depend on the opponent … but if there was another election today bile-filled rhetoric and contempt for human rights Bolsonaro has long been a hate figure for Brazil’s left But a growing number of conservative voices are also now questioning his presidency “His popularity is falling because people feel baffled by the things he is doing and saying,” said Eliane Cantanhêde a columnist for the conservative Estado de São Paulo newspaper another of Bolsonaro’s most trenchant critics São Paulo congressman Arthur do Val insisted he and his libertarian group, Movimento Brasil Livre didn’t regret backing Bolsonaro “for a single second” He accused hostile lefty journalists of unfairly portraying Brazil’s president as a grouch an ogre and “a 2019 Hitler who wants to kill homosexuals” But what mark would Val give Bolsonaro’s first six months in power “Four and a half out of 10,” the politician replied Val’s primary gripe was the excessive influence of the ideological wing of Bolsonaro’s administration – led by an eccentric US-based polemicist called Olavo de Carvalho – and its obsession with waging irrelevant ideological battles instead of promoting key reforms He was also perplexed that control of presidential communications had been entrusted to the president’s “most hot-headed son” who has launched a succession of social media attacks on perceived enemies in his father’s administration and on Brazil’s right The “antics” of such figures risked enabling a leftwing comeback “If the country ends up with a negative impression of the right and goes back to voting for the left then I think we’ll be going down a very dangerous path.” I believe things are going really well,” said Emerson Medeiros praising what he saw as Bolsonaro’s commitment to pension reform and fighting corruption On the night of Bolsonaro’s victory Medeiros and his wife, Cláudia, joined huge celebrations in São Paulo, pronouncing their new leader the “saviour of the nation” “I still feel as excited as I did that day,” enthused Cláudia The couple denied being blind followers of the president, or Bolsominions as they are known in Brazil “I’m not that mad person who will eternally adulate him if he screws up or if it all goes wrong with his sons and they really are corrupt,” Cláudia said, in reference to suspicions of corruption swirling around Bolsonaro’s eldest son They also expressed unease at Bolsonaro’s public blunders – including his recent insinuation that sex tourists were welcome in Brazil as long as they were not gay “But I still have the feeling things are moving in a good direction,” Emerson added “The media focuses too much on the bad things and never highlights the good.” Edson Salomão, a founder of the Direita São Paulo (Rightwing São Paulo) group, gave Bolsonaro an even sunnier report card, though he struggled, when asked, to list the main achievements of his first six months in office. “I’m trying to remember all of them now. Let me just have a look here,” Salomão floundered, reaching for his smartphone. “There are so many.” Salomão spurned Lobão’s criticisms as the ramblings of an irrelevant has-been. absolutely troglodyte and retrograde right.’ Photograph: Andre Lucas/The Guardian“I absolutely cannot stand shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of fanatics, villains, loons … flat-Earthers,” he complained. “We are in the lap of an absolutely troglodyte and retrograde right … [and] this grotesque and caricatured right will automatically, naturally pave the way for the return of the left.” could haul Brazil’s economy out of the “bog” he felt “dread” at its reactionary tack and Bolsonaro’s allegiance to “utterly tacky” hardline televangelists Lobão admitted having no idea where a Bolsonaro government might lead Ten months on the bearded rocker seemed even less sure So anything could happen – and we are inside it,” Lobão riffed Get quality reporting directly into your inbox The second-floor balcony of an ornate Parisian property overlooks the street near the Arc de Triomphe a stylish hallway leads to a courtyard filled with plants A doorbell reads "Zacarias" — but when a reporter rings Some neighbors say they don't know the family; others say they haven't seen them since the COVID-19 pandemic The inner courtyard that leads to the apartment owned by the former Venezuelan cabinet minister in Paris The apparently vacant apartment was bought in 2016 by a company set up by relatives of a former Venezuelan cabinet minister whose family is accused of handling tens of millions of dollars in suspected bribes They are just one example of several high-profile Latin Americans investigated for corruption or criminal activity who have sunk money into French real estate an investigation by OCCRP’s Latin America team and its partners found Other buyers of high-end French listings included a former Peruvian president suspected of taking bribes a Venezuelan investigated over allegedly fraudulent dealings with the state oil company and the son of a former Brazilian minister investigated for alleged corruption the people were investigated in connection with Operation Car Wash (“Lavo Jato”) a massive corruption and money laundering scandal in Brazil that revealed billions of dollars in state funds had been siphoned away in corrupt deals OCCRP’s member center the Bureau for Investigative Reporting and Data (BIRD) downloaded and processed information published by the French government in different datasets including French companies’ beneficial owners To make the information easier to search, BIRD created a search engine that allowed reporters to connect the dots between properties and the people behind the companies that own them Reporters first identified people of public interest and relatives of officials who had been investigated or involved in corruption cases reporters sent requests to France’s property registry services — known by its French acronym SPF — to obtain deeds of sale and other documents These revealed the names of the notaries involved and additional details of the transactions The same data was also scraped by the Anti-Corruption Data Collective which carried out a separate analysis with Transparency International and Transparency International France particularly in Paris and on the French Riviera make it an attractive destination for dirty money While the country has relatively open property registries anti-corruption advocates say lax enforcement and loopholes still make it possible to use French real estate purchases to launder money and hide illicit funds over two-thirds of French real estate owned through companies is held anonymously Transparency International and the Anti-Corruption Data Collective said in a report based on available data on French company and real estate ownership a French lawyer and anti-corruption advocate said that the “prestige” of places such as Paris can encourage international money laundering “The result is a particularly attractive real estate market which makes it possible to launder substantial sums,” he said Eight member states immediately closed their registers to the general public after the decision France initially restricted access to its register but then announced the registry would remain open “pending the adoption of a new legal framework at the EU level.” Here are some of the key findings from the investigation: Reporters found that close relatives of Haiman El Troudi El Troudi served as transport minister from 2013 to 2015 and then as a member of parliament from 2015 to 2020 located on the exclusive Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris is held in the name of a Paris-registered company — Saint Mathis 238 since renamed SCI Republic — which was set up in 2016 The owners of the company are El Troudi’s mother-in-law and her son A couple years before the apartment was purchased tens of millions of dollars in suspected bribes from Odebrecht the Brazilian construction firm at the heart of the “Car Wash” scandal flowed into multiple bank accounts which were controlled by El Troudi’s wife A 2020 Portuguese investigation document — first reported by the Miami Herald and Armando.info — shows that Portuguese investigators believed El Troudi’s wife was behind a Panama-registered offshore company which had received more than $90 million in alleged bribes from Odebrecht A separate set of documents from Switzerland showed that Swiss authorities had found that El Troudi’s wife and mother controlled eight bank accounts in the country The authorities linked certain payments to contracts to build the Caracas metro system The entrance to the building where El Troudi’s relatives own an apartment Venezuela’s state prosecutor’s office publicly stated it would summon the two women for alleged involvement in the bribery scheme a Venezuelan judge dismissed the case against El Troudi’s wife and mother-in-law The prosecutor assigned to the case said he was forced into exile the same year El Troudi does not appear to have faced any charges Portuguese and Venezuelan authorities did not respond to requests for comment on the case’s status The Swiss attorney general’s office declined to comment Reporters attempted to reach El Troudi by text message and left letters at addresses listed for his family in French documents The Paris property is not far from the historic Champs Elysées and Arc de Triomphe they found the name “Zacarias” on the doorbell of a seemingly empty apartment Reporters were also able to link El Troudi’s mother-in-law and her son to two other Paris apartments one in the same building and another on the same street French registry documents show that a company called Santa Elena Estates Inc bought one of these apartments for about 2.3 million euros and the other for about 1.2 million euros Santa Elena Estates Inc. was set up in the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis in March 2012, just a few months before the properties were purchased, and its directors were listed as Elita del Valle Zacarías Díaz, and her son Pedro Donaciano Baptista Zacarias, according to documents found in the Pandora Papers a massive leak of documents obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with OCCRP and partners French records show that one of the properties — the one purchased for 1.2 million euros — was sold in November last year for around 966,000 euros The records show Elita and her son were still directors of Santa Elena Estates at the time of the sale a Venezuelan businessman reportedly investigated for money laundering has bought multiple expensive properties on the French island of Saint-Barthélemy it bought a plot of land and two connected properties — a main house and a smaller unit — on Saint-Barthélemy for a total of 19.9 million euros was founded in 2008 to acquire a three-bedroom villa on Saint Barthélemy for 2.24 million euros for a three-bedroom beachside villa worth 11.4 million euros The beachside property features a swimming pool According to a 2019 report in the Miami Herald, Luis Oberto and his brother have been investigated for money laundering in the U.S The report quoted sources familiar with the investigation as saying the brothers were suspected of receiving billions of dollars into Swiss bank accounts which had been misappropriated through fake loans to the Venezuelan state oil company Over $4.8 billion was allegedly embezzled through the overall scheme officials did not respond to requests for comment on the case court records did not show any ongoing case Last year, Venezuela’s prosecutor said an arrest warrant had been issued for Oberto and his brother but no other details were immediately available Venezuelan authorities did not respond to requests for comment on the case French records seen by reporters show that Ganesha and against Márcio Lobão and corruption charges against his father who they alleged had received some 50 million reais ($12 million) from Odebrecht and the waste management company Estre Group in connection with the Car Wash scandal The entrance to the building in Paris’s 6th arrondissement The two are now on trial in Brazil’s Federal District Court Márcio and his brother Edison Filho were also targets of a search and seizure operation an offshoot of the investigation that had detained Márcio in 2019 Charges were not brought against Filho and the current status of that case is unclear confirmed that Márcio was sometimes seen staying in the apartment The property was not mentioned in Car Wash case court documents seen by reporters though a judicial decision authorizing Lobão’s 2019 arrest did show he made deposits into bank accounts he held in France Lobão’s lawyer said that his client had properly declared all his assets He also stressed that Lobão had not been found guilty of any of the allegations in the Car Wash scandal and said that the 50 million reais figure stated by the prosecutor was “incorrect.” “It is important to note that the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office Paris along with a cellar space and a separate small bedroom on the seventh floor in the same building The property is located on a quiet side street near the Avenue Henri-Martin thoroughfare García and his then-wife set up a company called SCI FIDES and donated them to their four children — all but one of whom were minors at the time where García and his wife bought an apartment and a cellar space Peru’s congress began investigating García for alleged corruption and illicit enrichment while in office But the statute of limitations expired in 2001 and he returned to Peru that year and ran for president again a congressman named Fernando Olivera filed a complaint with Peru’s attorney general about García’s purchase of the Paris apartment but eventually retook the presidency five years RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - On the morning of Feb a cyclist chugged his way up the curves of Rio de Janeiro's most popular sport cycling road one fruit plummeted from the heavily laden canopy of Tijuca National Park cracking his helmet and sending him sprawling There had long been stories of the world's largest tree-borne fruit divebombing passersby and that was potential trouble for Marisa Furtado and Pedro Lobão a couple who have taken up the challenge of rehabilitating the fruit's public image Jackfruit is abundant during the Southern Hemisphere's summer it has been consumed more by the poor or enslaved; in barbecue-mad Brazil the idea of fruit substituting for meat is viewed with suspicion Ecologists disdain it for crowding out native species in 13 federal conservation units across Brazil's Atlantic Forest And now cyclists spreading news of the accident on message groups and Facebook were accusing the fruit of assault One posted that he had skidded out on jackfruit like a jackfruit exploding so close it splattered a bike's spokes with shrapnel But this isn't the jackfruit Furtado knows and loves She dreams of a pilgrimage to the jackfruit's point of origin 73-pound jackfruit -- enough to prepare roughly 150 dishes Its Yuletide message: 'œMay abundance be with you all in 2021'ť jackfruit tenderloin -- and insists that they are both tasty and nutritious 'œHistory loads the jackfruit with prejudice Today we hear about the jackfruit that stinks So everyone who adapted this well to Brazil should be exterminated?'ť the Portuguese transported jackfruit seedlings to Brazil an environmental and ecological history specialist Rio's forest was getting cleared for timber an associate professor at Rio's Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) Jackfruit thrived in the degraded soil and produced gargantuan fruit that crashed to the ground and tumbled downhill The trees -- which can reach 80 feet tall -- took root including agoutis and black capuchin monkeys according to a paper that journal Tropical Ecology published this month Population densities are higher where jackfruit is their primary food an ecology professor at Rio's Federal Rural University You simplify the tropical chain,'ť said Abreu a biologist who has studied jackfruit's invasiveness To the extent Brazilian humans consume jackfruit It tastes like a combination of pear and banana jackfruit has been a meat alternative for centuries even called 'œtree goat'ť in West Bengal state coinciding with global interest in the 'œsuperfood,'ť he said plant-based restaurant Teva' s top-selling appetizer is BBQ jackfruit tacos His clientele is often surprised by a fruit normally encountered littering trails in a state of pungent rot 'œThey're impacted because they start to open their minds to a universe they didn't know,'ť said Biron Furtado and Lobao's organization is Hand in the Jackfruit ( Mao na Jaca a twist on the phrase 'œfoot in the jackfruit,'ť which means to slip up or go too far The expression is evocative for anyone who has plunged a Havaiana sandal into decomposing mush from which seeds protrude like garlic cloves Furtado and Lobão loaded 139 pounds of seeds into a squeaky shopping cart for delivery to a chef in Babilonia enjoyed jackfruit flesh and roasted seeds as a girl she dreamt up a spin on shredded chicken dumplings made from jackfruit She says jackfruit could end Brazilian hunger -- a fresh concern after the government ended COVID-19 welfare payments and the jackfruit can bring lots of nutrients to your body and be a source of income,'ť Tchelly said the road into Tijuca park has become an ideal venue for socially-distanced exercise Some cyclists contacted authorities after the accident demanding action that could include cutting overhead branches or tree removal removal of jackfruit trees was an internal issue of the park But now there are jackfruits threatening lives!'ť said Raphael Pazos founder of Rio de Janeiro's Cycling Safety Commission Furtado tried to calm the outcry by reaching out to cyclists She sought to steer them toward mapping jackfruit trees' locations posting signs about their benefits and organizing collection of fruit jackfruits could be snagged using a truck-mounted crane then donated to surrounding communities with Hand in the Jackfruit holding workshops to teach the sticky She spoke at length with Tijuca park's coordinator Furtado acknowledges the importance of diversity but argues a centuries-old Brazilian resident shouldn't be cast out of the garden 'œIt's an inheritance that needs to be valued cultural and environmental points of view,'ť she posted on Instagram 'œEradicating it would be a huge error and part of the arrogance of those who don't perceive life is dynamic.'ť But some scientists disagreed -- at least as far as Tijuca park is concerned 'œI'm 100% in the camp of taking it out from the park; it's exotic human livelihoods aren't depending on it,'ť said Emilio Bruna president of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation PUC's Oliveira said there's no doubt ecologically that native species should be substituted for jackfruit in Tijuca park it's free fruit for people who don't always have access to it it's apparently not as invasive as believed It becomes hyper-dominant where soil is degraded but an experiment of his showed seeds didn't germinate in robust forest 'œA good forest has a certain amount of defense against the jackfruit tree,'ť he said He said populations should be managed through girdling: slicing off a bark ring Abreu said herbicide injection is more effective and his models indicate killing 5-10% of mature trees annually is enough to put a given population on the decline The government's management plan for Tijuca park says jackfruit eradication should be prioritized; some 2,000 trees were girdled there between 2016 and 2017 It isn't clear what percentage of the park's total that represented cyclists from the safety commission convened at Tijuca park's entrance Furtado's efforts had worked -- to some degree They embraced her proposal to collect and distribute jackfruit to surrounding communities and decided to present it at the next meeting of the park's consultative council 'œWe didn't even know an association that did this existed,'ť Pazos said after the meeting 'œThere's no way to dislike the idea of giving food to the population.'ť They supported emergency collection by Hand in the Jackfruit but still favored girdling all roadside jackfruit trees He pointed out that another jackfruit had dropped just downhill Furtado concedes a few roadside trees could be removed as a last resort if collection or pruning proves impossible She vehemently opposes girdling or herbicide and believes in management through consumption 'œIf we eat the jackfruit and their seeds,'ť she said AP writer Aniruddha Ghosal contributed from New Delhi This website is using a security service to protect itself from online Inácio Lula da Silva walked out of a Curitiba prison Friday less than a day after the Supreme Court ruled that a person can be imprisoned only after all the appeals have been exhausted Hundreds of supporters were gathered outside the federal police building in southern city of Curitiba, hoping to catch a glimpse of the popular, 74-year-old politician who is appealing his conviction of corruption and money laundering in connection with the purchase of a beachfront apartment in Sao Paulo state A stage was set up for him to address the crowd tweeted “Lula Free” with a video of himself working out and lifting weights in a gym inside the prison where he has been detained since April 2018 he could find himself back in prison if his appeals don’t go his way It is not yet clear what political role Da Silva will seek to occupy now that he is free The former leader of the leftist Workers’ Party better known in Brazil by its Portuguese acronym PT whose politicians and voters have ceaselessly called for his release Political analysts believe Da Silva could rally the opposition which has been demoralized by the corruption scandals impeachment of Da Silva’s hand-picked successor a clobbering in the 2018 general elections Aside from his promise to root out corruption and curb violence far-right President Jair Bolsonaro ran a strong campaign on anti-Workers Party sentiment He won the election with 55% of the vote and was sworn in on Jan had been favored to win the 2018 presidential election but his conviction eventually prohibited him from running The former president has said that when free he would travel around the country rallying opposition Political analysts say he might not immediately enter into frontal opposition with Bolsonaro seeking instead to influence the next presidential election in 2022 “The thing that makes Lula most dangerous to Bolsonaro is that Lula understands the long game,” said James Bosworth stressing that the politician had run four times before being first elected in 2003 “Lula is an old school union and political organizers who is going to take his time placing PT and other allies into positions to take advantage of Bolsonaro’s weaknesses in the coming years,” he said The former union leader is widely referred to as a “political animal” He presided over a period of rapid economic growth fueled by a commodities boom that expanded the country’s middle class His huge Bolsa Familia welfare program helped lift millions from poverty and he left office with an approval rating above 80% His impassioned oratory can just as easily elicit laughter or tears from those among his supporters a professor in political science at the Fundacao Getulio Vargas university in Sao Paulo Da Silva’s release will have profound consequences on both sides of Brazil’s political spectrum it will serve Bolsonaro’s anti-PT and anti-Lula rhetoric it ends the PT’s ‘Free Lula’ rhetoric and forces the party to take on another agenda.” Left-leaning supporters hailed the release of their standard-bearer but want more and are now advocating for his name to be cleared the former leader remains entangled in several court cases he was also sentenced by a lower court judge in a case regarding alleged ownership of a farmhouse in Atibaia He has denied any wrongdoing in both cases and accuses Car Wash prosecutors and then-judge Sergio Moro justices will decide whether Moro was biased when he delivered his rulings his conviction regarding the apartment continues to bar Da Silva from running for office Protests in major Brazilian cities have been scheduled for this weekend aimed at showing support for Moro and his crusade to decrease crime and endemic corruption attacks on the Supreme Court’s ruling will doubtless feature loudly Associated Press writer Mauricio Savarese in Sao Paulo contributed to this report Brazil (AP) — As fires raged in parts of the Amazon Mydje Kayapo sat in a small boat looking out over the Curua River in the Bau indigenous reserve “The fire is coming closer and closer to our reserve,” he told a visiting news team from The Associated Press “Now it is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away.” helps organize a village watch group to protect the community’s lands from encroaching flames as well as illegal loggers miners and others seeking to exploit the area With fires spreading quickly to wide swaths of indigenous territories in recent weeks a 77% increase from the same period last year Many of those were set in already deforested areas by people clearing land for cultivation or pasture With over 98% of Brazil’s indigenous lands within the Amazon the threat to groups like Kayapo’s are particularly exposed Indigenous people from the Mura tribe show a deforested area in unmarked indigenous lands inside the Amazon rainforest near Humaita According to Brazil’s National Space Research Institute an estimated 3,553 fires are now burning on 148 indigenous territories in the region It’s being badly destroyed,” Kayapo said “We indigenous people need to be united.” As a multitude of international players discuss how to develop and protect the Amazon Kayapo and others find themselves on the front line of firefighting efforts and an ever-acrimonious feud with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Boslonaro has come under harsh criticism for environmental policies that some say are weakening safeguards in the rainforest He maintains Europeans are trying to infringe on his country’s sovereignty while also arguing that the demarcation of indigenous lands has hindered business interests he reasserted his claims at a meeting of Amazon regional governors arguing that reserves are being exploited by outsiders to halt the growth of Brazil’s economy “Many reserves are located strategically someone arranged this,” Bolsonaro said “Indians don’t have a (political) lobby but they have managed to get 14% of our national territory.” indigenous leaders have some of the most at stake a leader in the municipality of Conquista D’Oeste in Mato Grosso state appeared woeful as he walked along the banks of the Sarare River “The non-indigenous do whatever they want and then put the blame on the Indian,” Katitaurlu said explaining that when his group reported a fire to authorities a rancher said the tribe had set the blaze themselves felt the effects of farming and ranching expansion even more acutely and said inspectors were “not going after” the criminals “Some years ago there were a few (fires) but now there are more,” Katitaurlu said this is the largest (fire) that has ever happened and the smoke is coming here but two days ago it was full of smoke and hot.” leaders of the Group of Seven industrial nations pledged to help protect the Amazon region with $20 million in funds in addition to a separate $12 million from Britain and $11 million from Canada French President Emmanuel Macron has engaged in an increasingly personal feud with his Brazilian counterpart while Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said Latin America countries “have sovereignty over the Amazon.” Leaders of all Amazon nations except Venezuela will meet Sept 6 “to come up with our own unified strategy for preserving the environment and also for exploration sustainable in our region,” Bolsonaro said Wednesday Although Brazil’s president and international players have dominated the discussion some indigenous leaders appear to feel the most effective way to influence environmental preservation policies is to raise their own voices — or take matters into their own hands “I think this president doesn’t know the constitution very well,” said Kayapo if they try to come here … we will react against the Bolsonaro government and say: ‘Not here one indigenous woman wearing face paint and a headdress addressed the camera and also vowed to “resist for the sake of the forest “We from the Xingu River are connected to you all to launch Wednesday morning Crews spent most of the day Monday prepping the boat for its move to Pope's Landing in Danvers where the new owner will prepare it to sail to Florida didn't get to complete before he died in 2017 will be finished In August 2018, Lisa Hanselman, Lobao's daughter-in-law, contacted Patch and told us about the family's attempt to honor her father-in-law who many knew only as "The Boatbuilder of Lowell Street." The family sold Lobao's home starting the clock on a contingency in the sales agreement that the boat would be removed from the property within a year the family has been looking for someone to complete work on the boat so it could set sail The first person who agreed to complete work on the 45-foot Roger Simpson Liahona Trimaran fell through in May seemingly sentencing the project to the scrap heap But a team made up of Court Taus and David Stennett emerged from Florida and agreed to move the boat and finish work on it The move to Pope's Landing is scheduled for 2 a.m the boat Wilson's Legacy should be in the water by 11 a.m The family was devastated when he was crushed by boulders while clearing brush in his yard in 2017 was working near a culvert separating his property from a neighbor's when a retaining wall collapsed prompting the family to put the house up for sale and wonder what to do with the boat Lobao enlisted in the Air Force and tested rocket engines during the Vietnam War The family posted ads on Craigslist and Facebook groups for boat enthusiasts hoping to find an owner after much criticism from environmentalists politicians and even from oil industry executives the Brazilian government launches a comprehensive oil spill contingency plan is being launched one day after the giant Libra pre-salt field auction It’s hard to understand why the PNC wasn’t announced before the Libra auction according to the biggest Brazilian newspaper O Globo had been ready and shelved in a Brazilian State Department office for over one year the plan was announced one day after this same newspaper alerted that the Libra field was going to be auctioned without any oil spill contingency plan ready This really looks like a serious case of negligence by the government no one is taking any responsibility for this negligence and it does not look like anyone within the government ministries will even be punished for it The PNC announcement was made jointly by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and the Environmental Ministry (MMA) and deals with major oil spills such as the Deepwater Horizon tragedy at the Macondo field in the GoM The PNC plan calls for the implantation of a pro-active real-time offshore oil spill monitoring system training of emergency crews and more rigorous fines in order to minimize the consequences of oil spills It also delegates responsibilities in dealing with the spills expected environmental impacts and the sensitivity of the local environment If the spill crosses international borders the PNC plan will immediately be put into play The operator of the field that causes the spill will automatically be charged with the costs of the oil spill containment The PNC also places the MMA as the body responsible for preparing the response capability at a national level such as the Chevron operated Frade field spill in 2011 but does specify more rigid control over the actions taken by the field operator and sets clear penalties for deviating from the approved emergency plans and actions This limited plan exists since the year 2000 and was put in place after a Petrobras oil spill in Guanabara Bay Many environmentalists are still skeptical about the PNC and it will be interesting to examine the plan in-depth and also hear what will be discussed about this during the upcoming OTC Brasil millions of people in the dark after a huge hydroelectric dam suddenly went offline All of neighboring Paraguay also lost power The huge Itaipu dam straddling the two nations’ border stopped producing 17,000 megawatts of power Sao Paulo and at least several other big Brazilian cities Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao said He said outages hit nine of the 27 states in a country of more than 190 million people The cause of the failure had not been determined but Lobao said strong storms uprooted trees near the Itaipu dam just before it went offline and could be to blame the lights in Rio’s Copacabana neighborhood flashed back to life prompting cheers and thunderous car honking “It’s sad to see such a beautiful city with such a precarious infrastructure,” said Igor Fernandes a shirtless 22-year-old law student pedaling his bike down a dark Copacabana beach “This shouldn’t happen in a city that is going to host the Olympic Games.” Lobao said the hydro plant at the dam itself was working but there were problems with the power lines that carry electricity across Brazil Brazil uses almost all of the energy produced by the dam the national energy agency blamed the blackout on a short-circuit at an electrical station near Sao Paulo saying that failure shut down the entire power grid supplied by Itaipu All of Paraguay went dark for about 20 minutes said the blackout did not start at the hyrdoelectric complex It said the most likely cause was a failure at one or more points in the transmission system The blackouts came three days after CBS’s 60 Minutes news program reported that several past Brazilian power outages were caused by hackers Brazilian officials had played down the report before the latest outages
