religious festival in that municipality attracting hundreds of locals and tourists every year Machico’s biggest religious festival is celebrated on the 8th and 9th of October which began after the terrible flood of October 9 began to be annually marked by the festivities known as the Feast of the Lord of Miracles as well as the veneration of the Lord of Miracles which includes one of the main processions of faith in the entire Region annually attract faithful and pilgrims from all over the Island which takes place on the night of October 8th the image of the Lord of Miracles is carried on a float accompanied by fishermen with torches (dressed in dark trousers and a white shirt) when after mass it returns in procession to its chapel believers thank “the Lord for the blessings requested of him throughout the year” fulfilling “the promises made to the Lord of Miracles in sad times of pain and misfortune” they carry with them ex-votos and candles to symbolize the fulfillment of promises made in times of greater affliction and hardship Others feel the need to express their faith In order to “highlight the grandeur of the torches and candles as well as the entire atmosphere of splendor and collective faith the public lighting is turned off during the procession” where only “the flames of the candles” and torches shine From Diário Notícias Thanks to Mari Lippig for this nice write up about the festival in Machico last night In Machico last night the Senhor Dos Milagres – Lord of Miracles Late afternoon a procession started at Funchal’s Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte The revered Crucifix of Senhor Dos Milagres travels to Machico’s 15th-century church a site of historical and spiritual significance This pilgrimage honors the crucifix’s miraculous emergence from a 16th-century storm symbolizing local faith and divine protection The church resonates with holy music and singing This celebration holds deep spiritual meaning for the people of Machico It commemorates the miraculous events of the Lord of Miracles representing divine intervention and blessings The night becomes a heartfelt invocation for future miracles with prayers whispered into the starlit sky there’s a shared hope that these prayers find their way to fulfillment with families gathered to savor the local culinary delights — the sizzling aroma of grilled chicken and the spices of espatada fill the air mingling with the distinct scent of freshly baked bolo de caco Laughter rings out as children delight in their merry-go-round rides while some locals take to singing traditional songs that float on the sea breeze and community come together to create a truly ‘enlightening’ experience I’m thinking of moving to Madeira in November The 52-year-old man suspected of killing his wife last Wednesday in Machico confessed to the crime in court confirmed to DIÁRIO that the defendant said he “doesn’t know what went through his head” and could not find an explanation for what happened so much so that right after the murder he tried to kill himself and took more than 20 pills A 52-year-old person with no criminal record who picks up an iron and kills his wife is not balanced,” said the lawyer noting that during the investigation he will request a psychiatric evaluation of the individual and forensic psychology which will determine whether the murderer will serve his sentence in a prison or in a psychiatric facility Américo Silva Dias also spoke about the possibility of extradition went to Venezuela when he was four years old and had been living with the victim for 20 years He came to Madeira seven years ago and married the mother of his children five years ago,” he explained noting that “he will most likely be prevented from seeing his 14-year-old daughter the man was heard today in his first judicial interrogation and the coercive measure of preventive detention were applied to him From Diário Notícias The municipality of Machico will host the traditional burning of the ‘Fachos’ tonight a centuries-old celebration that marks the beginning of the feast of the Blessed Sacrament and which usually attracts both residents and visitors the event is taking place under a cloud of controversy with many considering it to be an “insult” and a “total lack of respect” in view of the huge fire that has been raging on the island for more than 11 days One of the main parties to immediately come forward to call for the cancellation of the festivities was Quercus “Next weekend there will be torches being set off and we are appealing to the PSP not to authorise the setting off of fireworks” also requesting tighter control by the authorities with PAN Madeira even putting forward a public petition (which has almost 800 signatures) to put an end to the event this year “as a sign of respect and solidarity with the firefighters who have heroically fought tirelessly to combat the fires that are devastating our island and in homage to the vast area of territory that was tragically destroyed by the flames” the Machico City Council in Madeira has decided to go ahead with the traditional event ensuring that all safety conditions are met said that in previous years the event was held even when fires were raging on the island and always withbhugh temperatures in August From Diário Notícias “Despite several requests for cancellation and always withbhugh temperatures in August.” Apparently nothing will ever change which is truly unbelievable I am living on the island for many years and always wonder why the people still have fireworks when the whole island is so dry and the danger of fire disaster do high Can you refer us to the historic reports referencing the wildfires resulting from this years old tradition are you referring to the ones that made this wonderful island so attractive for centuries are you referring to road congestion everywhere with paradise paved for car parks Not to mention housing attainable for foreigners only Anyone have a trusted link for signing the petition against this craziness or us it too late I think it is disrespectful on so many levels Check back tomorrow to see that this disrespectful “craziness” was in fact a beautiful celebration enjoyed by crowds of local residents and there were Zero issues It is a complete total disrespect and insult to all the people that been affected by the fires and also everyone involved combating that same fires that put their lives at risk to stop the forest fires If that Madeira government and the forest department put a red warning this should be respected was simple was that A man aged around 30 died in the early hours of this morning following a motorcycle accident on the expressway in the tunnel that connects Caniçal to Machico the motorcyclist lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the wall the Santa Cruz Firefighters and the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR) were mobilized to the scene but they were unable to do anything to save his life The Public Security Police took charge of the incident this is the second death to occur on Madeira’s roads this year a 19-year-old woman also lost her life in a motorcycle accident in Paul da Serra From Diário Notícias According to photos sent to Jornal Madeira despite the fires and the voices against the initiative due to the fires that have been ravaging our region residents and tourists have come to the city center to watch the event The city was busy and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere after the rain that fell in the area in the morning Well after the complete disrespect and insult towards the people that been affected by the fires and all the others that been putting their lives at risk to combat the fire the Machico council should give some of this revenue money towards the affected areas was a good gesture This is a photo I took on 11th December 2013 at Reis Magos in Caniço de Baixo It was a storm that left a trail of destruction and even caused one death in Machico Around 24 boats sank as a result of the strong sea waves The bad weather hit Madeira on 11 December 2013 and was reported in the following day’s edition 15 boats were unable to withstand the force of the water and ended up sinking along with pontoons and fingers in the local marina an employee of the Whale Museum tried to save the boat belonging to the Machico local authority he ended up being thrown out to sea by an unexpected wave whose name was later given to the same boat which is still moored in the Machico marina The equipment supporting the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers at Lobo Marinho was destroyed by the force of the water mainly to the sun terraces and swimming pools We were on the ground floor of the Royal Savoy when the sea breaking the concrete quay side / diving platform at the hotel next door then the Madeira Regency (now Savoy Next) shook the ground Was this the same storm that destroyed the marina at Ponta do Sol If not could you publish a report on that incident The brothers from São Tomé and Príncipe will be on stage today at 10pm at the 37th edition of Machico Gastronomic Week being the first headliners of the 10 days of entertainment at the event the expectation is for a packed house with the voices of António Mendes Ferreira and Fradique Mendes Ferreira who promise to involve the audience in a concert in which African rhythms blend with modern sounds From the hits ‘Te Amo’ to ‘Vai’ including ‘Onde Anda’ and ‘A Nossa Vez’ the duo is expected to draw a crowd to the heart of the municipality the first time that the artists perform on Machiquense soil starting with the official opening of the event which will take place at 7:30 pm with entertainment from the Banda Municipal de Machico and the Banda Filarmónica de Mogadouro This will be followed by a performance by Catarina Melim and her band (8:30 pm) on a night that will culminate with the sounds of DJ Sil From Jornal Madeira The first day of the 37th Machico Gastronomic Week was a full house Yesterday’s main attraction was Calema the duo brought thousands of people to the heart of the municipality the first time that the artists performed on Machiquense soil there will still be many big names on the main stage of the event including Nuno Ribeiro (July 31st) and Ana Moura (August 1st) A corpse “in a high state of decomposition” was found this afternoon in Porto da Cruz The alert was given at 1:45 pm by a neighbor who smelled a nauseating smell and noticed that the door of the residence was ajar she came across the body and quickly contacted the authorities Three members of the Machico Municipal Fire Department were mobilized to the scene together with agents from the Public Security Police (PSP) who took charge of the incident and are now investigating the case From Diário Notícias Everything is ready for the 17th edition of Mercado Quinhentista Under the theme ‘Machiquo: floor of fire’ the professor responsible for the organization explained to TSF-Madeira everything that will happen visitors can count on many activities to see and do in Machico the history of settlement with the theme Machiquo: floor of fire Fire was very important for the beginnings of settlement but it is also fundamental throughout all time there will be every day fire show at night which will be a torch that will light on the city’s slopes” In addition to this part linked to the theme and Fire Also noteworthy is the food and drink area which is different from anything else you can find within this type of initiative is that a totally different concept in all recreation events which is to take advantage of our traditional food and transport it to the event and each association can manage its product” this year’s edition of Mercado Quinhentista will feature 70 spaces that are basically divided into four zones; the bodega square which is where the arsenal is located with people working live and others selling and then the entertainment area for children there will be the Dramatization of the Season it will be time for the Parade of the Commendation of Souls there will be a fire theater ‘Fachos de Paixões’ and it’s time for all eyes to turn to the skies with the pyrotechnic show of the Atlantic Festival From Diário Notícias flowers bloom year-round—even species that normally wouldn't bud at the same time defy nature’s rules Waterfalls crash down between so many lush cliffs and green hills dotted by terracotta-roofed villages each building seemingly on its own tiered level so as to not block views The entire island is like an amphitheater and the unobstructed stage is the endless blue of the ocean Though you could drive around the cliff edges of the island in about three to four hours, those same bluffs beckon the bold to walk along the rocky shorelines or take a swim in the naturally made aqua tidal lagoons. Head inland to rappel down slippery waterfalls or traverse along the top of mountains that peek up over the cloud line so you’re gliding in a world of blue skies and swirling white fluff stroll around outdoor cafes under a river of purple-blossomed jacaranda trees take a sky gondola to a botanic garden atop a mountain and drink to make the most out of your next trip to Madeira Since just walking up the sidewalk on such a hilly island can seem to some like a “hike,” you’re really guaranteed action—and panoramas—no matter what level you choose. With 33 well-maintained trails spanning over 300 miles of the island often through an irrigation tunnel known as a levada If you want the latter, the Vereda do Areeiro connects the two tallest peaks on the island You’ll ascend 3,000 feet until you get above the cloud line at the top of the mountain where you’ll feel like you’re walking in a sunny swirling marshmallow land only planes should see It’s about six miles and around four hours one way so you can either double that to hike there and back or plan to have a guide pick you up at the top and drive you back but it’s still one of the best hikes on the island It’s not just the ocean in front of you that’ll take your breath away it’s also the sheer walls stretching out majestically on either side since the trail hugs the side of the bluff You can choose to go for five miles or onward for several more since it stretches along most of the coast and taxis or guides will handily drop you off and pick you up at predesignated spots like in Machico and Porto da Cruz awarded Michelin Gourmand and helmed by a two Michelin-starred chef That meal might entail beef tartare with house kimchi and shiitake mushrooms seared black scabbard over miso-imbued smashed chickpeas and a dessert of fresh loquat—an apricot-like tropical fruit—plucked from the trees outside and served with an almond crumble and goat cheese mousse Chef Octávio Freitas masterfully disarms the diner with two prix fixe menus including crab from mainland Portugal transformed into an ice cream amuse aged beef tartare with dried limpets and mushroom gel CCat82/iStock/Getty ImagesDrink way too much poncha the predecessor to Brazil’s famous caipirinhaThe tale behind the famous drink on Madeira might be more adventurous than the list of ingredients in the cocktail but it’s a story that’ll make you want to keep sipping (we’re nothing if not sticklers for a good drinking tradition) Since this island was a natural port for sailors crossing the Atlantic to and from Europe you can bet there was a lot of rum involved (helped by the sugar cane production on Madeira and plundering of colonized lands in the Americas) But sailors were also concerned about scurvy so Vitamin C-rich lemons were brought aboard and preserved—of course—in the rum Drizzle in some honey to curb the sour taste bartenders mix batches of poncha with a wooden muddler called a caralhinho which is made with local sugar cane juice (rather than cane molasses) It results in a rum that speaks of the land and conditions in which it grew or otherwise more nuanced flavors shine through On Rua de Santa Maria, also known as the Painted Doors Street, you can find poncha served up in all kinds of fruity flavors. Though any poncha bar worth its weight in rum will do fine, get a nightcap at Rei da Poncha Outside of the classic lemon and honey Fisherman (Pescador) Poncha choose from a long list of juices from passion fruit to tangerine to tomato Photo courtesy of Epic Madeira.Nature and outdoor adventures in MadeiraFling yourself down waterfalls and off cliffsWho wants to stop at just chasing waterfalls when you can then scale down them, superhero style? Canyoning excursions allow you to feel like you’re defying gravity by walking on a vertical wall of rock The rocks can be slippery and tricky to manage with just feet and no hands but you’re harnessed to a rope around your waist and carefully managed by a guide at the top and one at the bottom you’ll plunge into the pool below in a warm wetsuit before continuing along the water to the next falls Difficulty levels range from beginners level one to experts level five so you’ll get different heights and ease of footing depending on what you choose There are 131 canyoning excursions available around the island If you’d rather jump than climb, coasteering is what you’re looking for rather than going inland to the waterfalls you’ll head out to the coast and hike along the rocky edges of the island in search of good cliffs to leap off of and into the sea below you’ll be in a wetsuit and carefully watched by experienced guides an easier water adventure involves paddling around in natural pools so some mental prep may be needed before making the plunge Nestled on the shore about a 20-minute drive from Funchal, Fajã dos Padres highlights the fresh vegetation that thrives in Madeira’s volcanic soil This organic farm has small cottages and its own casual beachside restaurant only accessible via cable car down a steep cliff (seriously this farm was once home to priests—Jesuits who planted Malvasia vines to produce a fortified malmsey wine you can taste on the property still today Stroll past trees bearing mangoes and bananas and grapes drooping from vines to arrive at the restaurant where you can try local delicacies like lapas (limpets a small mollusk) on the half shell with a spray of lemon juice or fried espada Teleférico do Jardim BotânicoHistory and culture in MadeiraRide a toboggan down a mountain roadIt’s true that the Monte Tropical Garden in Funchal is worth a visit in and of itself The garden feels like an enchanted maze with fountains and art galleries that even though you’ll have to clamber back up the hill once you’ve reached the bottom you can meander as you please and make an espresso pit stop before continuing on But it’s getting to the garden and the windswept, adrenaline-filled return that many of us are really here for. First, to get to Monte at the top of the mountain, you ride up a gentle cable car that slowly reveals several more inches of the ocean-view and makes your cell phone photos of Madeira look like you have a drone When you’ve had your fill of flowers and stone steps at the garden it’s time for the ride back down the mountain—a journey best taken on a toboggan Whoever first thought to ride a wooden sled on a paved road down a mountain was either desperate a group of men known as carreiros wait near a booth selling tickets for a ride down the mountain The wicker toboggan is initially pushed by two smartly dressed carreiros who then ride on the back and guide the sled around bends and past car traffic as you bobsled your way down the island’s slopes Photographers offer to sell photos of yourself mid-ride like a snapshot from a theme park rollercoaster its origins are also nautical: According to legend tasted better than when it had first cast-off After trying to recreate the process and ruling out that the magical liquid wasn’t a result of the boat rocking or the salty sea air they discovered the heat in the hull of the ship concentrated the wine Madeira wine rejects traditional cool cellars and instead is heated in barrels for years but don’t offend the locals and say it tastes like port because it’s much more refined than that—and way less syrupy To pretend like we understand vintology for a hot second the volcanic soil of the island gives an acidity to the wine that helps it rinse clean from your mouth Needless to say, it pairs perfectly with any dessert (especially cheesecake IMO). One of the best places to get Madeira wine is Blandy’s Wine Lodge, which was first a monastery, then made into a prison, then finally a winery. For Madeira that straddles tradition and experimentation, Vinhos Barbeito will wow and impress where the glass walls of a rustic tasting room overlook an undulating verdant valley dotted with the country homes of a small town The outrageously pretty landscapes make the experience feel expensive without actually hurting your wallet—a thorough wine tasting shouldn’t set you back more than €15 along with a series of wines produced by António Oliveira the same man who might be outside grilling espetada These hunks of meat are skewered on local laurel branches for an earthy-herby flavor which Oliveira cooks over a live fire that he occasionally splashes with his Aragonez rosé The espetada is then hung vertically above your table and it’s a learning experience to gracefully slide a piece off the dangling rod with your fork and knife The storied hotel has hosted dignitaries of all origins most famously Winston Churchill who adored Madeira (It was and remains a destination for wealthy Europeans to holiday.) The front of the building actually faces the ocean since guests used to only arrive by boat (and the women were carried up the steps of the cliff in hammocks)—but the rear is no server’s entrance with chandeliers and french doors leading to balconies overlooking the water but it’s a chance to feel like James Bond sans the action sequence you can reserve a spot on the terrace for its traditional afternoon tea or pop into Gastrobar off the lobby entrance for a wonderful martini made with five-year Sercial Madeira Reid’s doubles as an adventure-friendly base camp with numerous vans and tour guides constantly streaming out front to pick up the daring clientele That’s not to say the hotel is canvas-tent level; you really get the comfort of five stars with a sauna and three heated indoor-outdoor salt water pools plus a pick up point for your nature excursions If you want to stay outside of the city of Funchal, a gorgeous bucolic escape awaits at Quinta do Furao the hotel butts up against the edge of the land and looks out at a mesmerizing wall of sea cliffs The rooms feel like a homey inn with soft colors Plus the onsite restaurant provides the same view around a central fireplace and some of the best beef and roquefort cheese puff pastries around making it feel like a mountain-topping piece of art itself It’s worth noting that Christmas here lasts one and a half months from December to mid-January, and it’s simply called The Party you can smell garlic in the air and are offered carne vinha d’alhos (pork drowned in wine) everywhere you go carolers visit homes singing songs and—in the best twist ever—eat all the leftovers in the house possibly one of the biggest parties of the year is the New Year’s celebration where the island goes all out in black tie gala-level attire while watching fireworks and sometimes acrobatic aerial displays cascade through the sky Madeira falls under Western European Standard Time (WET) This translates to five hours ahead of New York’s Eastern Standard Time and eight hours ahead of California’s Pacific Standard Time Madeira is classified as having a subtropical climate average temperatures range from a low of 66 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 81 degrees Fahrenheit Winter runs from December through February when temperatures range from a low of 57 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit although thanks to it being a major tourist destination English is also quite prevalent around the island Madeira uses the Euro (EUR) and each Euro is worth 100 cents marked by two round pins organized side-by-side The standard voltage is 230V with a standard frequency of 50Hz Kurotsuki Online Convention (KuroCon) announced on Wednesday that its "volume 2" event will host voice actress and singer Machico on September 26-27 The convention previously announced that the September digital event will host singer and voice actress Yun*chi (Log Horizon, Wooser's Hand-to-Mouth Life: Phantasmagoric Arc theme songs) KuroCon also held a digital convention on July 4-5 and hosted musician Asaka KuroCon's website describes the event as a "free online convention born out of the desire to host an event to replace the ones we lost in these difficult times Organized by a bunch of friends and comrades in the anime/game/manga/music/Japan culture space Sources: Email correspondence, KuroCon's website The roads of Madeira will be full of motorcycles this Sunday The Madeira Motorcycling Association promotes with a tour from the city of Funchal to Machico where there will be musical performances by ‘De Passagem’ the traditional ‘Bike Wash’ and the Bênção das Motas with Canon Manuel Ramos The 17th motorbike caravan is scheduled to depart from Avenida Sá Carneiro at 10:30 am and arrive in the center of Machico at 11:30 am The organization expects the participation of thousands of people in which around 7 thousand people and more than 5 thousand motorcycles attended The event has the support and collaboration of the Municipal Council of Machico through the Regional Secretariat of Agriculture and Environment the Regional Directorate of Land Transport the Port Administration of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the Municipal Fire Department of Machico From Diário Notícias I bet some of them were wearing leather too ???
