Finland-based Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) has signed an agreement with Portugal’s Capwatt to provide Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services for a syngas production plant
integral to the Mangualde Renewable Methanol project in Portugal
This initiative aims to build a biorefinery capable of producing 80,000 tons of renewable methanol annually
utilizing locally sourced biomass residues and renewable electricity from a nearby photovoltaic (PV) solar park
The core of the plant will feature an advanced SFW gasification unit
designed to transform the carbon in biogenic residues into syngas
This syngas will then be combined with green hydrogen from electrolysis in the methanol synthesis process
is set to become a cornerstone of future carbon management solutions for both the transport and chemical industries
from serving as sustainable shipping fuel to being converted into sustainable aviation fuel
As global net zero targets drive the demand for renewable methanol
production needs to surge from zero today to an estimated 400 million tons per year by 2050
“We are thrilled by Capwatt’s confidence in our gasification technology

CUMBERLAND - With the presence of a number of elected officials from both Portugal and the United States
as well as more than a dozen former presidents and hundreds of members and friends
Clube Juventude Lusitana celebrated its 100th anniversary last Saturday at a dinner held at its main hall in Cumberland
one of the most eclectic organizations in the Portuguese communities in the United States
as well as several individuals who in recent decades have allowed Clube Juventude Lusitana to become “a cathedral erected in the name of Portugal.”
In the program that was placed at all tables
the organizers explained what is so special about Clube Juventude Lusitana: “a meeting point
a landmark of longing memories of life and of each one that passed through here
Today we celebrate one hundred years of all this
and one hundred years of members and friends of this
member and contributor and director of various Committees and Boards
the national anthems of Portugal and the United States were played by the Band of the Clube Juventude Lusitana
Alberto Saraiva introduced some of the groups of the club
1988; students from the Portuguese Official School
which was founded in January 1929 and made official by the Portuguese government in 1973; and there was still time for a performance from the Cavaquinhos Group
The cavaquinho is a Portuguese instrument that almost resembles a ukulele
The Auxiliary Ladies' Group has been at the club since June 3
The sports section was formed a year earlier
under the initiative of Francisco Xavier Cabo
the soccer team adopted the name ‘Lusitana Sports’
and enjoyed great success in the defunct Luso American Soccer Association (LASA)
former Secretary of the Portuguese Communities and currently a member of the national General Assembly
He brought with him a gift from the Mayor of Mangualde.
Cesário began by pointing out that the celebration of hundred years of existence is “a historical landmark” because “there are not many organizations
in Portugal that reach 100 years of existence
this demonstrates that this community is a very committed community
and that it has been able to preserve this institution as the great meeting point of the Portuguese who are here.”
After emphasizing that Clube Juventude Lusitana “is a meeting point of the Portuguese who are here in this area of New England,” Dr
Cesário confessed that “it is fantastic to come here” because when he approaches the club he sees “Penalva Way,” named after a town near his place of birth.
In addition to “meeting here friendly people
people I got used to seeing there,” Dr
José Cesário said he was equally pleased to “see folklore
Everything that is part of Portuguese culture
and there is also a certain communion between people from the mainland and people from the Azores
which is also a factor of great satisfaction for me.”
Cicilline brought a Congressional citation to congratulate the club on the celebration of its 100th anniversary
and the Governor of Rhode Island Daniel McKee had words of praise
The Governor began by saying that “there are 39 cities and towns in the state of Rhode Island and every community is important
and the communities that make up those communities are very important.”
“the Portuguese community is such an incredible economic
generosity for us in the state of Rhode Island,” something that he learned first-hand “because I grew up with my friends in high school and interacted with this club before I ever was involved in politics
So I understood it’s very important and to be here tonight in the hundredth anniversary and all the people that have been touched by this club
it’s something to be very proud of.”
Before taking over the state reigns in March
And during that period he had the opportunity to participate in various initiatives at the club
something that allowed him to see firsthand the impact it has had on communities on both sides of the ocean
“The generosity of this club is unbelievable,” the Governor said
This incredible generosity came across to him at “the Penalva dinner
where we would meet every month and we raised dollars for people who needed help
He later went to Portugal with a delegation from the club
travelled to Penalva do Castelo and Mangualde
and contacted people “from fishing villages
and everywhere we went the hospitality was second to none
We’ve engaged people here from Portugal who have come to this club
Secretaries of State that have come to this club
so to me the culture is just significant… we want to make sure that every community counts in Rhode Island
but we know how important the Portuguese community is to Rhode Island
Also in attendance were most municipal leaders
Clube Juventude Lusitana also gave an appreciation award to State Representative James McLaughlin and directors António Farinho
José de Oliveira and Cunha and Alberto Saraiva.
Matthew McGarrell was named an honorary member.
The club also gave out scholarships to three future college students
about a dozen former presidents were honored
receiving plaques commemorating the celebration
To put into perspective the importance of the Clube Juventude Lusitana
one of the guests for the centenary celebration
pointed out that the club is seen “as an example of a club that can do several things
So I think it’s an organization that doesn't just represent one thing..
in these activities it has not only students or soccer players from the Portuguese community
it also reaches out to other communities and other ethnic groups.”
explained that “the Clube Juventude Lusitana is an association of 600 members
He acknowledged that in the beginning the members “came together and decided to found a club so they could learn the language and overcome the difficulties that immigrants faced
and they evolved as they integrated into the community”
and now it is more of a community club for Portuguese and other nationalities.”
And from what came across during the celebrations
Clube Juventude Lusitana appears ready to walk decisively towards another century
The celebrations ended with a performance from well-known artist Maurício Morais
