he’ll help steer the Club towards even greater achievements through a shared vision and strategy
They call him the “Magic Man,” a reference to Joao Moreira’s early days as a jockey in Singapore when he didn’t always get rides on the best horses
Moreira credits Singapore track announcer Craig Evans with giving him the nickname
“When I first got there, I wasn’t given the best opportunities,” Moreira recalled Tuesday morning from the backside at Churchill Downs
“I was still able to get good results from horses who were not in good form
‘This kid is doing magic with those horses who don’t have form.’ From there on he started calling me the ‘Magic Man.’ That
I’m very proud of such a nickname he gave me.”
Moreira, a 41-year-old from Brazil, has enjoyed a strong career while riding in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Brazil and will get the chance of a lifetime Saturday when he makes his Kentucky Derby debut aboard Luxor Café
“It’s like a dream coming true,” Moreira said
Moreira was in the irons Tuesday morning when Luxor Café completed his final pre-Kentucky Derby breeze
Luxor Café — 15-1 in the morning line — will enter the Kentucky Derby off a five-length victory in Japan’s Fukuryu Stakes on March 29
Luxor Café arrived in Chicago on April 21 and went through a 42-hour quarantine before making it to Churchill Downs on April 23
“The traveling obviously did take a little bit out of him
Moreira’s “Magic Man” nickname has been boosted by several big moments over his career
including eight-victory days on three separate occasions
He rode briefly at Churchill Downs in 2013
winning a maiden special weight with the Wesley Ward-trained Princess Millie
he’ll head straight to Brazil to ride in Sunday’s Group 1 Grande Premio Sao Paulo
it kind of speaks for itself and his abilities,” Hunter said
“Everyone is always worried you’re not going to be able to do well in your first Derby
but if there’s anyone who’s going to be able to pull it out of the hat
A son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah
Luxor Café was bred in Kentucky before being sold to Koichi Nishikawa
All six of Luxor Café’s races have come in Japan
where he’s accumulated a 4-1-0 record and won four straight starts
Moreira rode Luxor Café for the first time in the Fukuryu Stakes
but he kind of won so much more impressively than I thought,” Moreira said
the field wasn’t as strong as the race he’ll be running on Saturday
Luxor Café is one of two hopefuls for Japan, joining Japan-bred Admire Daytona
He also breezed five furlongs in 1:02.40 on Tuesday
Admire Daytona has been defeated twice by Luxor Café in Japan
“His strong point is he doesn’t have to have a position,” Admire Daytona trainer Yukihiro Kato said
Sometimes he might lose a little bit of attention along the way.”
Luxor Café and Admire Daytona represent Japan’s latest attempts to capture the Kentucky Derby
a Kentucky-bred purchased by Japan’s Yoko Maeda
Master Fencer became the first Japan-bred in the Kentucky Derby in 2019
Forever Young nearly got Japan its first Kentucky Derby victory last year, finishing third in a photo finish
Hunter said Japan’s Triple Crown nominees totaled 70 this year
“But I think that ‘so close’ … really did invigorate the horseman population to try to make it over here.”

It was an extremely close-fought tussle in the 3* Grand Prix at the CDI Myakka City held at TerraNova Equestrian Center on Friday 2May 2025
Just 0.8 percentage points separated the top six combinations in the class
which was topped by Canada’s Naïma Moreira Laliberté on KML Inc’s 12-year-old gelding Inspire with a 68.891%
Second-placed Charlotte Jorst (USA) was just 0.15 percentage points adrift
riding Kastel Denmark’s Zonik x Stedinger son Zhaplin Langholt — another 12-year-old gelding — to 68.739%
riding Ann Romney’s 15-year-old Belissimo M mare Bellena to 68.239%
Ebeling edged out his trainer Christoph Koschel (GER)
whose 68.174% on his own 10-year-old Dancier gelding Destare earned fourth place
female athletes scoring 68.087%: Katherine Bateson Chandler on Haute Couture and Kasey Perry-Glass on Heartbeat WP
The win marked Moreira Laliberté and Inspire’s first international grand prix victory since stepping up to the level at TerraNova’s April CDI a year ago
Inspire’s test featured many sevens and 7.5s
with an eight given for the extended canter
The only glitch came in one of the piaffes
which was costly as the movement carries a double coefficient
“He really tried hard in there,” said the 28-year-old
there are so many things I want to improve
It is going to be achievable; I just need to run him
I consider him still a green horse and he still needs to learn the routine and get confidence and experience in there — he hasn’t done much at this level yet
“I’ve had him since he was three and I’m very proud that he became a grand prix horse and there is so much more in there for the future
as well as Jordi Domingo in Europe,” continued Moreira Laliberté
who was excited to return to TerraNova to compete
Moreira Laliberté often spends summers on the other side of the Atlantic
but has opted to stay in Canada this time round
I’m going to go back to my hometown Montreal,” she said
“This is a bit of an off year [with no major championship shows]
so we’re going to enjoy spending a bit more time at home.”
she will contest the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday
It will be Inspire’s first freestyle at the level
and he will perform to his stablemate Statesman’s music
Moreira Laliberté added another ribbon to her collection on Friday in the 1* Prix St
finishing runner-up with 68.971% on the 11-year-old All At Once mare
The blue ribbon was awarded to Andrea Woodard (USA) for her 69.471% ride on Enter At A LLC’s eight-year-old mare Roxette (by Revolution x Quite Easy)

2025–Canada’s Naïma Moreira Laliberté rode Inspire to victory in the TerraNova CDI3* Grand Prix Friday for the first Big Tour win for the partnership
who in recent years has split her training and competition schedule between Florida and Spain
was awarded a personal best 68.891% for the win on the 12-year-old KWPN stallion that came a year after the pair started international Grand Prix
she competed at last year’s Olympics in Paris and at the 2022 World Championships
The duo won team gold at the 2019 Pan American Games and bronze at the 2023 Pan Ams
placed third on Bellena with a score of 68.239%
Susana Moreira did not have the same energy as her siblings
and she lost the ability to bathe and take care of herself
the 41-year-old Chilean has spent her days bedridden due to degenerative muscular dystrophy
When she finally loses her ability to speak or her lungs fail
she wants to be able to opt for euthanasia — which is prohibited in Chile
Moreira has become the public face of Chile’s decade-long debate over euthanasia and assisted dying
a bill that the left-wing government of Chilean President Gabriel Boric has pledged to address in his last year in power
a critical period for its approval ahead of November’s presidential election
and I will reach a point where I won’t be able to communicate,” Moreira said at the house where she lives with her husband in southern Santiago
the Chamber of Deputies of Chile approved a bill to allow euthanasia and assisted suicide for those older than 18 who have a terminal or “serious and incurable” illness
it has since been stalled in the Chilean Senate
The initiative seeks to regulate euthanasia
in which a doctor administers a drug that causes death
in which a doctor provides a lethal substance that the patients take themselves
Moreira was diagnosed with shoulder-girdle muscular dystrophy
a progressive genetic disease that affects all her muscles and causes difficulty breathing
as the intense pain only allows her three or four hours in the wheelchair
she said she felt the “urgency” to speak out in order to advance the discussion in congress
“I don’t want to live plugged into machines
I want to live as long as my body allows me,” she said
detailed her daily struggles and asked him to authorize her euthanasia
He made her letter public to congress and announced that passing the euthanasia bill would be a priority in his final year in office
multiple political upheavals have relegated Boric’s promised social agenda to the background
“A sick person isn’t certain of anything; the only certainty they have is that they will suffer,” Moreira said
“Knowing that I have the opportunity to choose
Chile began to debate euthanasia more than 10 years ago
Despite being a predominantly Catholic population and the strong influence of the Church at the time
Chilean Representative Vlado Mirosevic presented a bill for euthanasia and assisted dying in 2014
The proposal was met with skepticism and strong resistance
the bill underwent numerous modifications with little significant progress until 2021
showing greater openness to debating thorny issues
Recent surveys show strong public support for euthanasia and assisted dying in Chile
75 percent of those interviewed said they supported euthanasia
while a study by the Center for Public Studies from October found that 89 percent of Chileans believe euthanasia should “always be allowed” or “allowed in special cases,” compared with 11 percent who believed the procedure “should never be allowed.”
Boric’s commitment to the euthanasia bill has been welcomed by patients and families of those lost to terminal illnesses
a decade-long advocate for the right of choosing when to die
His 14-year-old daughter Valentina went viral in 2015 after posting a video appealing to then-Chilean president Michelle Bachelet for euthanasia
and she died less than two months later from complications of cystic fibrosis
asking lawmakers to put themselves in the shoes of someone whose child or sibling is pleading to die
and there’s no law to allow it,” Maureira said
euthanasia and assisted death remains a contentious issue in Chile
“Only when all palliative care coverage is available and accessible
will it be time to sit down and discuss the euthanasia law,” said Irene Munoz Pino
academic and adviser to the Chilean Scientific Society of Palliative Nursing
She was referring to a law enacted in 2022 that ensures palliative care and protects the rights of terminally ill individuals
Others said that the absence of a legal medical option for assisted dying could lead patients to seek other riskier
I keep hearing about suicides that could have been instances of medically assisted death or euthanasia,” psychologist Monica Giraldo said
the holiday season is a time of joy and celebration
Homes are filled with wide smiles and good food as loved ones gather to relax at the end of a long year and look forward to what lies ahead
nobody should have to wonder about how they’ll make their holidays a happy time – and
members of the Revolution organization are doing their part to make that perfect world that much more of a reality
Following in the footsteps of former players Teal Bunbury and DeJuan Jones before him
New England Revolution assistant coach Pablo Moreira is spearheading the 2024 New England Turkey Club Fundraiser
in conjunction with Rhode Island’s Providence Rescue Mission
Moreira reflected on the importance of the work of serving others and the impact it has on him personally
The coach said that he appreciated the work Bunbury and Jones had done in the past in this area
adding that his connection with the former Revs attacker went all the way back to their time together at the University of Akron
But when it came to pitching in for himself with the Turkey Club
Moreira said that the choice could not have been clearer
“I don’t like to go into something without really knowing what it was,” he said
“I made arrangements to go down to the Providence Mission to go and help out
and they also had meal time – what they do there is basically
And when they’re done eating it actually turns into a shelter
And that opportunity to serve others means a lot to Moreira
both in terms of how it helps him keep things in perspective as well as how it reminds him about his own humble roots
This is something that allows me to put everything in perspective and keep it even
my dad was this epic Uruguayan National Team soccer player
and it was all rainbows and butterflies – but then the indoor league went bankrupt
I was in a situation where I grew up and my sisters and I shared a bedroom up until high school
I would play at Akron and then at nighttime I’m cleaning toilets
That’s why I appreciate every layer of where you could be socially
And I think you can only get an appreciation if you’re in there on the ground … So again
because I have been on the opposite side of needing
as much as the fundraiser is about helping families in need in the community
Moreira said that the opportunity to team up with Revolution players in this effort helped strengthen the bonds within the Foxborough family as well
Players involved this year include Brandon Bye
“You get to see the other side of [the players]
you get to see the personal side,” he said
“And essentially that’s what it’s all about
but that’s how you really show if you’re a family or not
What makes it a family is doing these types of things.”
In terms of collecting donations for the Turkey Club to be handed out to families in need
Moreira said that efforts were just getting underway and there was still plenty of work to be done
And despite his passion for the work on the ground
the coach conceded he wasn’t the most adept spokesman for the cause in today’s digital environment
but in this regard it’s the worst thing – I’m like
‘You probably chose the worst cat out here!’” he said with a laugh
Luckily, you, the supporters, can help spread the word, and even get involved directly. With one $40 donation, you can provide a Holiday food box to a family in need. Each box includes a 15-pound turkey and enough food to provide several days’ worth of meals for a family of five. Donations can be made directly through the Providence Rescue Mission website
and every contribution helps Moreira and the Turkey Club get closer to their goal of $25,000 raised and 6,000 families fed
and thank you in advance for your generosity

Carlos Moreira, executive director of the Brazilian Plastic Institute and CPO of Think Plastic BrazilAs Brazilian packaging companies look to expand their presence in the U.S. market, Think Plastic Brazil is taking the lead with a strategy built on design innovation, sustainability, and export readiness. At the World Plastic Connection Summit in São Paulo today
Packaging World spoke with Carlos Moreira
executive director of the Brazilian Plastic Institute and CPO of Think Plastic Brazil
about how the organization is helping manufacturers navigate global markets and meet the evolving demands of international buyers
What are the core strategies Think Plastic Brazil is using to position Brazilian plastic (packaging) companies in the U.S
Think Plastic Brazil structures its strategy through an official Sectoral Project in partnership with ApexBrasil [The Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency] aiming to internationalize the Brazilian plastic transformation industry
Our approach is based on five strategic pillars
which strategically prepares companies to compete through ESG
market evolved in terms of demand for sustainable and innovative packaging
and how is Brazil aligning with those expectations
While the U.S. has increased its demand for more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions, Brazil has followed this trend through structured capacity building and product adaptation. Think Plastic Brazil has integrated sustainability modules into its international presence, thanks to partnerships with companies like Braskem
These modules are showcased at key fairs to highlight circular economy practices and eco-friendly material development
we provide specific training on sustainable communication and environmental strategy
ensuring our companies are aligned with global trends and expectations
Brazil is known for its renewable energy and circular economy initiatives
How are these sustainability strengths being communicated to U.S
Although macro initiatives on circularity are led by entities such as ABIPLAST [Brazilian Association of the Plastic Industry]
Think Plastic Brazil plays a complementary role by fostering education
and strategic ESG positioning among supported companies
We achieve this through sustainability-focused lectures
and the inclusion of circular economy modules in international fair displays
What role does innovation—such as lightweighting
or digital printing—play in the internationalization of Brazilian packaging companies
Innovation is one of the strategic axes of Think Plastic Brazil
Through the Global Green Design framework
we have implemented specific programs to boost international design competitiveness
These programs encourage the co-development of packaging solutions aligned with circularity
and technical feasibility for international markets
the Color Trend platform brings an additional layer of value by embedding emotional and cultural storytelling into visual identity
which resonates deeply with international buyers seeking unique narratives
What are the biggest challenges Brazilian companies face when entering the U.S
and how does Think Plastic Brazil help overcome them
The primary barriers include unfamiliarity with U.S
adaptation of products and communication to local preferences
and limitations related to booth space and visibility in international fairs
Think Plastic Brazil tackles these through diagnostics
and technical guidance offered within our export qualification cycle
We also provide logistical and marketing consulting
and collaborate with PEIEX to offer targeted export clinics during Buyer Projects
Feedback from supported companies indicates that although they value international visibility
improvements in fair infrastructure and stand positioning remain necessary
How do you ensure companies are export-ready in terms of quality standards
Companies are also guided through technical consulting processes to ensure their documentation
and operational readiness align with international expectations
Complementary programs like the Export Design Booster help them tailor packaging and branding to cultural preferences in specific target markets
Are there any key partnerships or collaborative initiatives between Brazilian institutions and U.S
Think Plastic Brazil collaborates closely with SECOMs [Brazilian Commercial Sections in U.S
as well as with international design studios and academic institutions via the Global Partnership Accelerator
These initiatives aim to formalize business and R&D partnerships and have already led to joint developments and licensing agreements
How is Think Plastic Brazil facilitating dialogue or matchmaking between Brazilian manufacturers and U.S
Through our World Plastic Connection Summit Buyer Projects and virtual matchmaking tools
we ensure curated meetings between pre-qualified Brazilian suppliers and international buyers
These meetings are further enriched by the use of personalized company profiles and CRM-based selection
Our structure also includes in-person guided tours and immersive missions to foster deeper commercial ties
has Think Plastic Brazil participated in recently
Our presence at PACK EXPO International and PACK EXPO Las Vegas is a staple in our calendar
We also promote participation in other global shows aligned with key verticals
and develop specific actions within our own platform
which has grown into a hybrid annual event encompassing business meetings
What kind of reception have Brazilian companies received from U.S
The feedback collected indicates that U.S
buyers have recognized the quality and creativity of Brazilian products
companies have highlighted the need for better stand infrastructure and more prominent locations within fairs to optimize visibility
These insights have directly informed our action plan to enhance future participations
How do Brazilian plastic packaging companies differentiate themselves in a competitive U.S
Differentiation is rooted in storytelling
and the emotional value of Brazilian culture
The Color Trend is a strategic differentiator
offering exclusive Brazilian-origin color palettes validated by the supply chain and inspired by national narratives
These colors are promoted internationally through design kits
reinforcing Brazil’s role as a trendsetter rather than a follower in global packaging aesthetics
Are there any Brazilian packaging formats or technologies that are gaining traction or standing out in the U.S.
formats that incorporate Color Trend-branded colors and packaging concepts rooted in Brazilian identity have stood out
companies that align with circularity principles and present certified packaging prototypes
developed through initiatives like the Circular Design Lab
are gaining attention in international fairs and attracting interest from global buyers
What are Think Plastic Brazil’s top priorities for 2025 when it comes to U.S
Our focus for 2025 includes launching the Color Trend as a registered brand on global platforms
expanding the reach of the Global Design Hub
and amplifying our presence in North American events with better infrastructure
We also aim to increase the number of companies qualified in the Expert Plus category
and to consolidate Global Green Design as a benchmark of Brazilian design and sustainability worldwide
Where do you see the greatest opportunities for growth or collaboration between the Brazilian and U.S
The strongest opportunities lie in co-creating packaging solutions with cultural value and environmental compliance
brands increasingly seek partnerships that offer narrative depth and ESG alignment—areas where Brazilian companies excel through initiatives like Color Trend and platforms such as the World Plastic Connection Summit
which facilitate long-term business development through authentic Brazilian identity and global innovation standards

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Brad Wilson | For lehighvalleylive.comAlexie Moreira was following a predictable sporting path
one of the world’s truly soccer-mad nations
His dad had a tryout for the legendary Lisbon club Sporting
recent conquerors of mighty Manchester City in the Champions League
His height – he’s 6-foot-3 now – and physique – 220 pounds now – made him a natural at center back and center midfield
But something changed as Moreira entered high school at Phillipsburg
“I didn’t know what I was going to do,” he said
So Moreira did – although he wound up at a position where size isn’t always everything
because the Phillipsburg junior has become one of the most dependable kickers in the region and has become a real weapon as the No
1 seeded Stateliners (8-1) prepare to host No
5 Chatham (7-2) in an NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 sectional semifinal at Maloney Stadium on Friday night (7)
Moreira has made 45 of 47 extra points attempted; the two misses were blocked
As he showed in last week’s 42-0 rout of Nutley
he’s become an excellent pooch/onside kickoff performer
and he needed some fine-tuning of his skills and fine-tuning of his leg
but he’s always had plenty of ability to boot the football,” Stateliner head coach Frank Duffy said
“But it’s not just about a strong leg; there’s a mental component to kicking too
We try figure out ways to put kickers under stress in practice – the element “I” in DIG (P’burg’s motto) is ignore the noise
We’ll have everybody circle around Alexie and yell at him
maybe even throw water on him.” Nobody’s rattled Moreira yet
“I was pretty sure I’d do well (taking over for the graduated Colin Hoey) this year
but I am sure I thought I’d be perfect,” Moreira said
“I focus on a lot of technique in practice and I try and make practice as exciting as possible
There are times in practice where everybody (on the special teams) and I go over everything
I iust have trust in everything I do and have learned and I get the kick down the middle in a straight line
and he said one reason he’s rarely nervous is his dependable holder
Veteran Philadelphia-area coach Kevin Clancy
who just won his 300th career game in the PIAA District 1 playoffs when his Strath Haven team trounced Penncrest
once told this reporter that missing the PAT all too often made it feel like his team hadn’t scored at all
Phillipsburg has never had that feeling this season
has never had the feeling of kicking a field goal
“I’d love to have the opportunity,” he said
before noting that the Stateliners’ very efficient offense
doesn’t produce many field goal situations
Duffy said the chance may well come – and that Moreira will be ready
“We’ve started doing field goal to win (the game) situations
with a trumpeter from the band playing in Alexie’s face while he kicks a field goal at the end of practice,” Duffy said
one-score games in the playoffs or Thanksgiving
Did Moreira make the kick the first time the trumpeter was in his face

Moreira’s kickoff skills are coming along just as nicely
there’s a lot of onside and pooch kickoff drills
me and the other kickers try and come up with drills for each other.”

you have to be aware of the time that has lapsed – the slower
the more likely the punt is blocked,” Duffy said
“Alexie has worked himself into being a good punter and has learned the ins and outs of the trade.”
“At first I wasn’t confident I’d have the hends to catch thn snap
Then I want to kill the ball like it’s a kickoff
Everything has to go right in punting.” Phillipsburg special teams usually go right
“I am lucky coach Duffy is very big on special teams,” Moreira said
“We always have situations set up to practice and I become very comfortable with what I need to do.”
More so than he is explaining what he does to his European family
in France; my great-grandmother is 100 years old and she’s healthy,” Moreira said
“I don’t any of them understands anything about American football.”
Alexie Moreira understands how to be a kicker – and Phillipsburg’s better off for it

Some weeks are lacking spectacular strikes
while others –– like Matchday 8 –– have no shortage of brilliant finishes to choose from
While Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Brian White scored four goals
thriving on simple finishes instead of spellbinding moments to change games
With Matchday 8 in the rearview, Sports Illustrated takes a look at the five best goals from the weekend's 15-match slate. If you missed Matchday 7's selection, check those out too
Alonso Martínez beats the keeper for the breakthrough. 💥📺 #MLSSeasonPass: https://t.co/IIAN5mEWX2 pic.twitter.com/c01h32RKn6
Alonso Martínez made the most of a defensive mistake from the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, rounding Andrew Rick and finishing into the empty goal to put New York City FC up in the 55th minute
before the goal stood as the winning marker with the 1–0 final score
The skill. The goal. Gerardo Valenzuela opens the scoring for Cincinnati. 🌀📺 #MLSSeasonPass: https://t.co/JTlW51TR5b pic.twitter.com/lKrWJe9zzt
Lionel Messi didn't find a goal this week in MLS, but FC Cincinnati's Gerardo Valenzuela scored one the Argentine would be proud of, featuring stepovers and a perfect cutback before finishing to secure the club's third straight win and a 1–0 victory over D.C. United
Dani Pereira, what a strike. 😳 pic.twitter.com/cko2l4A2DJ
It wasn't a goal that mattered to the overall 5–1 loss for Austin FC against Vancouver Whitecaps FC
but Dani Pereira scored a near-perfect knuckleball from the top of the box
beating a confused Yohei Takakoka and making sure Los Verdes weren't held off the scoresheet entirely on Saturday
Bassett ➡️ Navarro 💥What a sequence for @ColoradoRapids. pic.twitter.com/BOh8Wiik9z
Rafael Navarro got his name on the scoresheet, but it was an entire team effort for the Colorado Rapids' 60-minute goal against San Diego FC
It took six passes after Navarro carried the ball over the halfway line
and the Brazilian forward even had enough time to take an extra touch

Crosses can be a fickle matter when they're searching for an unmarked player in the box, but Columbus Crew SC made sure it looked perfect in their 2–1 win over St. Louis CITY SC
a veteran defender with over 100 MLS appearances
scored this volley for his fourth-ever goal in MLS

the face of female boxing in the West African nation of Cape Verde
has twice made it to the quarterfinals of IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2022 and 2023
is convinced she is capable of winning a medal at this year’s World Championships scheduled from 8-16 March 2025 in Niš
Making her debut at the global boxing event in 2022 in Istanbul
Moreira lost to Canada’s Charlie Cavanagh in the quarterfinals after seeing off Morocco’s Oumayma Belahbib in the round of 32 and Kenya’s Everline Akinyi in the pre-quarters
Inspired by her remarkable performance in Istanbul
an energized Cape-Verdean travelled to New Delhi
oozing confidence for the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships but once again bowed out in the quarterfinals losing to Kazakhstan’s Nadezhda Ryabets
‘It was a good accomplishment for me to make it to the quarterfinals at my first World Championships
I was there without my coach and my team to support me,’ she recalled
we did enough with my team to win the fight
and although the fight was given to my opponent
I was happy to reach the quarterfinals again.’
Buoyed by her success in Istanbul and New Delhi
Moreira is eyeing a place in the finals in Serbia and feels she has what it takes to be there
‘I’m currently the number two in the world
I believe l am one of the best in the world,’ said Moreira who is planning for a few build-up matches before the World Championships
Moreira views the Asian and European boxers as the biggest obstacle in her medal hopes in Serbia
singling out China’s defending champion Yang Liu as a potential threat if she comes to Serbia
Yang Liu edged out Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapeng in the finals of the 2023 World Championships in India
both boxers maintaining the dominant show of the Asian countries
India emerged as the overall winner followed by China and Russia in third position
Moreira singles out Uzbekistan boxers as a force to reckon with
While Moreira acknowledges the technical superiority of Asian women
she believes African boxers are stronger and will soon overpower their adversaries
‘African boxers are the strongest fighters
but the Asians and Europeans are ahead of us technically and tactically,’ said Moreira who is once again being handled by her coach and husband Jorge Silva
Silva is impressed with the tremendous progress Moreira has made in boxing
‘She always wants to learn new techniques to improve the basics,’ said Silva
Nancy is a top fighter now ranked number two in the world by IBA
she can win a medal there because there’s very little difference between her and boxers from Europe and Asia
Now is the time for Africa to make a big statement.’
She got involved in the sport at the age of 23 through the influence of her brother-in-law
She signaled her intention to conquer the world in 2019 at the African Games in Rabat
Morocco where she won Cape Verde’s only medal – a bronze
She has no plans to step out of the ring until she’s 40 years old
‘I started very late so I will be in boxing for as long as my mind and body are coordinating well,’ said Moreira who has hailed the IBA for motivating boxers with good prize money in their tournaments
if it wasn’t there maybe I wouldn’t be participating in so many championships
and we boxers are happy that they realize medals are not everything for boxers to invest in their future

two technologies that we have been living with for a long time
Speaking from a coffee shop in Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca neighborhood after the last throes of the Carnival
researcher and popular educator with a calm and affable voice says that she is a little uncomfortable with the end-of-the-world rhetoric associated with AI
yet at the same time she does not offer many reasons for optimism: she does not deny the concern caused by the concentration of the enormous power of AI in a handful of big techs in a couple of countries
or by regulation that always seems to be too little
and with which they will possibly manufacture a new and more powerful new device
“If you continue to be the one contributing basic supplies
it is colonialism in another shape… we continue to offer the most basic elements because we have not developed the technology
we are not the owners of the technology,” she says
So what role do Brazil and Latin America have to play in this new world in transformation
if they want to be something more than mere spectators
It is a dilemma that Moreira leaves to the political class: “The global geopolitical game implies assuming that risk within everything that is offered on the table.”
While others decide how to safeguard their digital sovereignty in a world that is changing at the speed of light
Moreira does not lose sight of the threat of new technologies in perpetuating historical discrimination
Under the pretext of strengthening public security
Brazil is experiencing a boom in facial recognition and technological surveillance tools (there are already 351 projects underway and almost 82 million people potentially under surveillance
who coordinated the campaign Tire seu rosto da sua mira
consider it not only an attack on the right to privacy
but a “continuation of scientific racism” due to the constant identification errors that affect mainly Black people
As a counterpoint to a perhaps dystopian future
Moreira says she wants to focus on the little things
on what really makes up people’s lives and which (at least for now) cannot be monetized or turned into data
She talks about ancestral technology: “Do you know how to make a child stop crying
That is cutting-edge technology for many people
without which no one can live […] Capitalism can collapse in many ways
but the microeconomy of care is continuous,” she says with conviction
Another of her main goals is to put an end to the Cartesian idea, so deeply rooted in the West, that science is opposed to religion. A practicing follower of Umbanda
an Afro-Brazilian religion originating in Rio de Janeiro
Moreira believes in Afrofuturism and in the possibilities of science for non-white peoples
who have resisted and endured outside the system: “It exists
but it is codified in a different way.” For example
the offerings that devotees of religions originating in Africa make to Oxum
Pregnant women often offer her (and also cook and eat) a type of beans that are very rich in folic acid
which has helped many pregnancies to come to a successful term since time immemorial: “Perhaps it is not codified in the Western way
but there is a very lively science there,” she says

architecture is not only a matter of design but often one of endurance — of working within constraints
and of navigating a built environment marked by permanence and resistance to spectacle
Yet within this persistent context, a new generation of architects has been reshaping the field with quiet determination. Often formed in shared spaces, these practices balance autonomy with collaboration and meticulous detailing with broader urban concerns. Their studios tend to reflect this ethos: modest in scale, defined by adaptive reuse
and rooted in the material reality of the city
architecture unfolds as a process — sometimes speculative
sometimes grounded — but always reflective of a practice that is deeply local and increasingly global

1/33NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 final: Northern Highlands vs. Phillipsburg on Nov. 15, 2024.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Brad Wilson | For lehighvalleylive.comAlexie Moreira sticks to his fundamentals – always
And it’s a good thing for Phillipsburg football that he does
I keep my head down all the time,” said the Stateliners junior kicker
“I try and let my sideline tell me if it’s good.”
Moreira was left in absolutely no doubt whether his final kick in Friday night’s NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 final went through the uprights
school-record-tying 46-yard effort sailed through the uprights as time expired to give the Stateliners a stunning 13-11 win over visiting Northern Highlands as Maloney Stadium turned into a madhouse
Moreira’s kick capped what longtime P’burg broadcaster Mike Moore called a “miracle” win for Phillipsburg
“It was the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in sports,” Moreira said
Stateliners head coach Frank Duffy called it “the most exciting win” of his career
whose 10 tackles helped keep the Stateliners in the game
may have spoken for everyone in the stadium in garnet and gray when asked if he was sure Moreira would make the kick
He hesitated a second before saying: “My heart was beating fast
He’s been practicing those kicks since the summer and when he takes them
Here is the call courtesy of Mike Moore and Matt Johnson.#DIG pic.twitter.com/clhvXOkIFu
Not many of Phillipsburg’s 747 varsity football wins in its history could have offered this kind of thrill
The ending was one of the most captivating moments ever in the long history of Stateliners football at Maloney Stadium – perhaps because it seemed so completely impossible
Northern Highlands (6-5) had just erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and taken a 11-10 lead with 24 seconds left in regulation on a two completions from junior quarterback Jack O’Callaghan to senior wide receiver Shane Hanlon – the first for an eight-yard touchdown pass
the second for the two-point conversion that gave the Highlanders the lead
if indeed it did (photos showed Hanlon may well have been tackled shy of the goal line)
It looked as if Phillipsburg (10-1) had self-inflicted
its often sloppy execution and 13 (accepted) penalties
a brutal playoff loss and dropped its third straight sectional championship game
The Stateliners were starting at their own 36 with no timeouts left
they’d need to go at least 35 yards and could almost certainly not afford to have a play end in bounds
There are NFL teams that would struggle to do that
I think the only people who thought we could win were our players and our coaches,” Duffy said
Such situations are when great quarterbacks make their reputations
Denver fans still talk about John Elway’s “The Drive” against Cleveland in 1986
And it may be that Phillipsburg fans will talk about what senior quarterback Jett Genovese did in those last 24 seconds
“There wasn’t much communication,” he said
of talking about wanting to do what the previous two Phillipsburg teams had not done – win a sectional final and get past this week
“I can’t even tell what I am thinking after an ending like that,” Genovese said
I am so proud of every one of these guys - they are all so special.”
Genovese surely was in the last 24 seconds
He maxed out the yardage in the time available
not trying to do too much all at once or be a hero himself
He ran twice and found senior wide receiver Matthew Scerbo Jr
Scerbo’s secure hands were never more important and critically
That’s no small feat when the defense knows that the offense had no choice but to work the sidelines
and surely the Highlanders knew Scerbo would be where Genovese looked first
and the ball rested on the Highlanders' 29 with four ticks left on the clock
“Jett not taking a sack on that drive was huge,” Duffy said
“That and situational football won us the game
As they do on the play Duffy calls “field goal to win,” which had entered the Stateliners practice rotation about when the playoffs started
Duffy never hesitated to make that call at the end
“Field goal was the better percentage play there
“Alexie knows I believe in him – he has done an outstanding job making himself into an outstanding kicker
Junior Chase Doering made an outstanding hold
“I wasn’t particularly nervous,” said Moreira
who may well have been the calmest person in the stadium
“We’d been practicing that situation all week
So did all of Phillipsburg by the time it landed – a kick that carried the Stateliners to their ninth sectional title and into the Group 4 semifinals (against the winner of Saturday’s Ramapo-Morris Knolls N1G4 final)
carried the fans into heaven and carried Alexie Moreira right into the Valhalla of Phillipsburg football

Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater is calling 2024-25 its “comeback season.”
junior Lily Moreira knows a thing or two about comebacks
the co-op has been one of the state’s best gymnastics programs
winning back-to-back state titles in 2017 and 2018
But last season was the first since 2016 that BRWB missed qualifying for the state meet after its fifth-place showing at the South Sectional championship
we’re getting extra prepared and we’re calling it our comeback year
We’re all working hard in the gym to make it one.”
Moreira led a comeback of her own nearly four years ago — one that makes this attempt seem simple in comparison
Moreira was struck by a car in her driveway
She was treated for two weeks at Boston Children’s Hospital
where she was in a neck brace and unable to move on her own
“They tried to keep me as entertained as possible,” she said
They also took us up to the garden at the top of Children’s Hospital
It made the time go by a little bit faster.”
Moreira started gymnastics at age 6 because she was constantly in motion
“I was a little bit of the wild child in the family
so they decided to put me in gymnastics,” she said
the stillness that came with her rehabilitation wasn’t exactly up her alley
But the medical team at Children’s wasn’t sure returning to gymnastics was something she would — aor should — do
“[The doctors] were a little bit hesitant with me going back,” said Moreira
Moreira returned to Brockton’s Spectrum Gymnastics as soon as she received her doctors’ clearance
but finished fourth in the state on uneven bars at Level 7 less than a year after her injury
Moreira competes in both club and high school gymnastics
She won the Cranberry League all-around championship in February and was fourth at South sectional
she will again compete all-around for BRWB alongside sophomore Lindsay Woodbury
“Lily made an incredible comeback from her accident,” said coach Stephen Cudworth
who coaches Moreira at both the club and high school level
“From having to re-learn all her gymnastics skills from the start to making it to Level 9 and being one of the leading all-arounders in the Cranberry League and in the state is nothing short of incredible.”
Moreira fundraises to bring more toys and games (including Giant Uno) to Children’s Hospital
her goal is to become a nurse like the ones who helped in her comeback
▪ Last year’s state champion
will be competing without Brown University-bound senior Sophie Tressler (injury) but still has the firepower to repeat
the Merrimack Valley Conference all-around champion
while standout vaulter Sophia Sierpina steps into a larger role as a senior
junior Kallie McCarthy will be one of the Raiders’ key all-arounders
while they also welcome freshman Kaylan Wozniak
a Level 9 gymnast with uneven bars potential
and to go as far forward as we can this season,” said Central Catholic coach Heather Fusco
Central Catholic will again battle with Masconomet and Danvers
the defending North champion and state runner-up
returns senior co-captain Fallon Eberhardt
who showcases elite tumbling on floor exercise
Juniors Janey Young and Sarah Aldrich provide the Chieftains with depth
Danvers returns a deep team with a large number of high-level club gymnasts
▪ Defending South champion Mansfield believe it has a team that can challenge the North’s best
Dynamic tumbler Andrew Znoj returns for his senior season after helping lead the Hornets to a fourth-place finish at last winter’s state meet (boys must compete on girls’ apparatus if they are members of a team)
a senior captain who qualified for the state individual championship on vault and floor last season
while junior Sophie Moore and sophomore Ava Redding will trade all-around duties
Riley Charest joins Boni as a senior captain
and looks forward to competing on two apparatus after being limited last season
a senior with significant club gymnastics experience
