fountains and monuments: there are many places to visit and get to know in the municipality of Odivelas
One more suggestion for discovering the best that the Lisbon Metropolitan Area has to offer
At Lisboa Secreta, we love writing about our city, but we also love ‘discovering’ the surrounding area and, in particular, the Lisbon Metropolitan Area
it’s time to get to know the municipality of Odivelas better
we’ve prepared a list of eight of the many attractions this place has to offer
that’s a question with an easy answer
This municipality has a vast historical and cultural heritage
The Odivelas Memorial (also known as the “Cross”) is located in the historic center and is an interesting example of the Gothic style in Portugal
There are three main parts to this construction : the base
the double superimposed arcade and the crown
On the monument you can see the medieval Portuguese coat of arms
which was used on the Armory until the reign of King Ferdinand
the Odivelas Memorial is topped by a cross
there is some uncertainty as to its origin and meaning

This is one of the places you should consider when visiting Odivelas
It is a religious monument dating from the 18th century and has a particular symbolism
Its construction was due to the fact that the relics stolen from the Mother Church of Odivelas in the 17th century were found here
The purpose of the monument was therefore to mark the finding of these pieces
The monument is particularly noteworthy for its wall lined with monochrome tiles

Classified as a National Monument in 1944
is a characteristic tomb from the Neolithic period
It is a dolmen with a chamber formed by seven pillars and a small corridor facing southwest
It was presented to the scientific community in the 19th century by archaeologist Carlos Ribeiro

Windmills have a high heritage value in the municipality of Odivelas. But why? Well, they are direct testimonies of the regional milling activity between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Of particular note is the Moinho da Laureana (under municipal supervision), which was restored in 2001. The first references to it date back to 1763.
It is a typical mill from the south of Portugal and is one of the fixed mills with a cylindrical masonry tower and a removable hood with an interior rail. Moinho da Laureana has one floor and a store.
Where: Rua dos Moinhos, Jardim Gertrudes da Velha, Famões

Moinho das Covas is another place to visit in the municipality of Odivelas
this is a direct testimony to the existing agricultural activity
It was restored in 1996 and consists of two floors and a store
Each floor has a couple of millstones and the store is used for packing and selling flour
Where: Ramada Secondary School – Bairro dos Bons Dias
Classified as a National Monument since 1910
The monastery was founded by King Dinis in the 13th century
This temple was donated to the Bernard Nuns of the Cistercian Order
Although the building is currently closed to the public due to works
it couldn’t be missing from this list

The municipality of Odivelas has several fountains
This is another of the places to visit in Odivelas
Located in the old urban center of the parish
the Manueline-style front portico and holy water font stand out
The church underwent alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries
Also noteworthy in the chancel are the canvas “A Ceia” by the painter Pedro Alexandrino (1802) and the canvases of the Four Doctors of the Church
Where: Rua da Igreja Póvoa de Santo Adrião
in addition to our list of places to visit in Odivelas
If you decide to take a trip to this municipality
don’t forget to try the famous Marmelada Branca de Odivelas
born in the Monastery of São Dinis and São Bernardo de Odivelas
which is distinguished by its white color (or almost) and its fruity taste

Kazakhstan’s Olzhas Orazalyuly emerged victorious from a tense tie against Algeria’s Ishak Ouldkouider in the men’s up to 60kg
the match appeared as if it was going to go the distance
successfully sweeping one of his opponent’s legs from underneath him
Ouldkoudier settled for silver but can be content with his win over Paralympic champion Sherzod Namozov of Uzbekistan in the preliminaries
Azerbaijan’s Vugar Shirinli also took bronze after winning his fight against teammate Orkhan Garayev
Azerbaijan’s Bayram Mustafayev retained his title in the men’s up to 66kg following a close tie with Algeria’s Sid Ali Lamri
Both men shared two Shido each for various infractions until the defending champion executed a Tomanagi to claim gold
Uzbekistan’s Paralympic champion Urtkirjon Nigmatov occupied the third place on the podium
Some categories did however go to form on Friday (17 November)

Fighting Japan’s Paralympic bronze medallist Junko Hirose
Celik managed a fine trip on her opponent to claim an Ippon
China’s Zhilian Lin and Uzbekistan’s Parvina Samandarova were the bronze medallists
A total of 268 judoka from 43 countries are competing for titles at the 2018 IBSA Judo World Championships

Live results are available on the Judo World Championships website
This week in the Cadet European Championships
9 of the 14 world ranked number ones will be competing in Odivelas
and will certainly be looking to defend their ranking positions by earning European titles.
In the -63kg category, Sinem ORUC (TUR) is the only defending champion
she went on to become the cadet world champion in Sarajevo
cementing her place at the top and then took three consecutive cadet European cup gold medals
This is Oruc’s opportunity to become a double European champion and many will be gunning for her demise this week
The rest of those coming in with top world ranking can’t quite boast the same streak
any many are actually coming to Odivelas with a silver or bronze medal from last years continental championship.
taking himself up the podium and taking two cadet European cup gold medals in Fuengirola and Coimbra
perhaps the luck will continue for him in Portugal this week.
Since embarking on his international career, Tornike GIGAURI (GEO) has been a force to be reckoned with in the -60kg category
never missing out on a place on the podium
his consistency has lead him to become the number one
Two female competitors were forced to settle for silver medals in the 2022 cadet European championships and also missed out on golden glory in Sarajevo for the world championships
however their collection of medals would suggest that they are some of the most regular medallists and this week could be their chance.
The young Slovakian athlete has an impressive eight European cup gold medals to her name
a combination of cadet as well as junior level
Tomankova has a clean record in terms of her success in competition
narrowly missed out on a medal in both the cadet European and world tournaments in 2022
but perhaps with the extra experience accumulated since then
he will leave Odivelas with a better result.

Sandrine Martinet returned to the mat after a two-year hiatus to compete at the World Championships in Odivelas
The French judoka decided to take a break after winning gold in the women’s up to 52kg at Rio 2016
to spend time with her children and husband
She is also a physiotherapist and took the chance to return to her work for a time
But with Odivelas 2018 approaching fast and Tokyo 2020 in sight
double European medallist Martinet is still driven by winning
“If the injuries leave me alone I have all my chances at the World Championships
And I want to score maximum points,” she said
In 2018 the Frenchwoman made her comeback at the World Cup in Atyrau
“I came back to win but I did not necessarily think to win this World Cup,” she said
“The conditions were not necessarily favourable in terms of my preparation for this competition but the experience helped me to win
With probably the surprise effect of the change of category.”
Martinet said it would be “interesting and a new challenge” to try and win the up to 48kg title
She will face the likes of Paralympic and world champion Li Liqing of China as well as Germany’s Carmen Brussig
another regular podium finisher at major events
Odivelas also offers judokas the chance to grab points towards the world rankings
These will be used to determine who qualifies for Tokyo 2020
Martinet is already thinking about the chance to compete at her fifth Paralympics and stand on top of the podium again
A victory in the birthplace of judo would be even sweeter
but I am confident if my body is good!” she said
The opening of the Olympic season is even more special
While there are only a few months left before the Paris 2024 Games
for all the athletes present in Portugal over the weekend
a blank page that will have to be filled with golden letters
We cannot say that the result here does not matter
It is obviously quite the opposite because the points at stake can affect the situation profoundly
There are the judoka who strive to secure their place in the top 17 of each weight category
guaranteeing them the ticket for the Games
There are those who aim for the top 8 and a seeded place in Paris
There are also those who are still in a gray area and who do not yet know if all their efforts will be enough
The continental quota is an objective but it retains its share of uncertainty
there are all the others who are present in Portugal to see
to already prepare for the next Olympic cycle
they will also be able to qualify for this summer
we know that in judo everything is possible
all scenarios presented themselves on the tatami of Grand Prix Portugal 2024 and this made the competition particularly interesting
The time that separates us from the opening of the Olympic Games may still seem long but it is very short indeed
Everything is speeding up and everything is becoming clearer
The number of participants in Odivelas is proof that all the delegations understand that everything is at stake now and that if there was only one risk to take it was to participate because everything is possible
There is a new controversy in the management of the works for the construction of the Violet Line of the Lisbon Metro
After the government authorized the necessary funds for the construction of the Violet Line surface metro a year ago
it turns out that it will face additional costs of 150 million euros
And the inauguration date has also suffered as a result
and which would have been ready and operational in 2027
with completion and opening not expected until 2029
With a total investment of 527.3 million euros
the carriages and the construction of the new railway infrastructure between Loures and Odivelas
the new line will have a total of 17 stations
eight stations will be built to serve the parishes of Póvoa de Santo Adrião and Olival de Basto
The stations will be of different types: 12 surface stations
three underground stations and two trench stations
These are the names of the 19 new stations that will connect Odivelas to Loures:
The government approved a financial reinforcement of 150 million euros
since the tenders were higher than the base price
increasing the total budget to 677 million euros and
in addition to the loans from the PRR – Recovery and Resilience Plan
the government will be seeking funds from the State Budget
which has led to a lot of criticism about how this whole process is being managed
There may have been Asian domination in of the Portugal Grand Prix 2024, the opening evening for the IJF World Tour, however the attention was stolen by sister (twins actually) act, Mascha and Seija BALLHAUS
while Seija has been forced to settle for an 57kg 5th place
both performed incredible and were able to cheer for one another
Though there was potential from two athletes to take gold for Europe on day one
four gold medals went to the Asian nations; Uzbekistan (2)
The -48kg category was a complete wipeout for Europe; Japan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia celebrating the medals and qualification points there. As for the -52kg category, WRL #6 PUPP Reka (HUN) was in with a chance of gold, however the top seed and WRL #3 Diyora KELDIYOROVA (UZB) was on top form and delivered within only 18 seconds
A smooth transition from drop seoi nage in to ne waza brought about
to go along with her four Grand Slam wins and world silver at senior level
Daria KURBONMAMDOVA (AIN) narrowly missed out on the gold
settling for the silver in the -57kg category
and team mate Glafira BORISOVA took bronze at -52kg
three of the four leading seeds are from outside of Europe
Barbara MATIC (CRO) with a little pressure to pull through from the host continent
The competition will continue to be extraordinarily tough given the timing and the upcoming Olympic Games
but the athletes will continue to deliver their best
tune in to JudoTV.com at 08:00 (GMT) or 09:00 (CET) for day two of the Portugal Grand Prix
Paralympic champion Sandrine Martinet will be one to watch at Odivelas 2018
With exactly one month to go until the Judo World Championships get underway in Odivelas, Portugal, the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) has revealed that every moment will live streamed on Facebook and YouTube
the competition marks the start of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
Athletes will be able to secure points towards the world rankings
which will determine who will go to the Games
are expected to attract nearly 300 judoka from more than 30 countries
France’s Sandrine Martinet won gold in the women’s up to 52kg at the Rio 2016 Paralympics
adding to her silver from Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004
Martinet secured first place on her return to the mat at the IBSA Judo World Cup in Atyrau
In the women’s up to 70kg Lenia Ruvalcaba has been in great form since claiming the Paralympic title two years ago
The Mexican will be hoping to improve on her bronze medal from the last World Championships in 2014 in Colorado Springs
Zviad Gogotchuri won Georgia’s first Paralympic medal with gold in the men’s up to 90kg in Rio
In 2018 he will compete in the up to 100kg against a stacked field including South Korea’s Paralympic title holder Gwang Geun Choi
Uzbekistan have two Rio 2016 gold medallists in the men’s – Sherzod Namozov in the up to 60kg and Utkirjon Nigmatov in the up to 66kg
all the values are illustrated during the team competitions and this aspect was magnificent throughout the day
perhaps a little disappointed with their individual result
who wanted to leave Portugal with the feeling of a job well done
who had to re-motivate themselves and put their talent at the service of the collective
There was a Portuguese national team which wanted to please its audience
ready to bring that little extra which makes all the difference
whose ability to transcend themselves when it comes to working not for an individual purpose but for others
The mixed team competition brings all this
a permanent drama which vibrates within the crowd; a permanent uncertainty which means that from morning to evening we remain glued
It is during such a tournament that friendships are forged within the team; it is here that group cohesion works wonders
winning a world title or medal with your teammates is something special
“It was one of the best moments of my career!”
The most beautiful perhaps and the loudest without a doubt was the extraordinary bronze medal won at the last minute by the host country
There were smiles and joy in Odivelas on this Sunday
Li Liqing is the reigning world and Paralympic women's up to 48kg champion
Rio 2016 gold medallist Li Liqing wants to quickly forget about the Asian Para Games and return to the top of the podium at the 2018 Judo World Championships in Odivelas
She is one of the top judokas from L-O in a continuation of our rundown of athletes to look out for at Odivelas 2018
China’s Li Liqing is the defending champion in the women’s up to 48kg
Liqing is also the Paralympic title holder
But the Chinese judoka dropped down the order at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta
losing to eventual victor South Korea’s Soohee Choi in the semi-finals
World No.3 Jung Min-Lee of South Korea won silver in the men’s up to 81kg at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games
He also claimed a win at the World Cup in Tashkent
in late 2017 and followed that up with silver at the 2018 Asian Para Games
Sandrine Martinet finally got the gold she had been working for in the women’s up to 52kg at Rio 2016 – her fourth Paralympics
the French judoka has dropped down to the women’s up to 48kg
She continued her winning form at the World Cup in Atyrau
Algeria’s Moloud Nora will try to retain his gold from the 2014 World Championships in the men’s up to 60kg
The Beijing 2008 champion ventured into the men’s up to 66kg earlier in 2018
but after a seventh place finish at a World Cup in Atyrau he returned to the lower weight category
Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Namozov is a rival to Nora
Since claiming bronze behind the Algerian four years ago
Asian and Asian Para Games titles and several World Cup wins
Russia’s Natalia Ovchinnikova* is the European silver medallist in the women’s up to 57kg
In 2018 the Russian made it onto the podium again at the Atyrau World Cup
*Editor's note: The International Paralympic Committee suspended the Russian Paralympic Committee on 7 August 2016 for its inability to fulfil its IPC membership responsibilities and obligations
in particular its obligation to comply with the IPC Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Code (to which it is also a signatory)
Russian athletes cannot enter IPC sanctioned events or competitions
Chris Skelley is aiming for a World Championship medal at Odivelas 2018
“I like to beat everyone but obviously I want to beat the likes of Gogotchuri and Choi
I want to take those scalps this time and prove that I really am of this level and show the world I’m here to stay.”
As the clock ticks down to the 2018 World Championships in Odivelas
British judoka Chris Skelley is zoning in on his goals
The 25-year-old made his Paralympic debut at Rio 2016
securing fifth place in the men’s up to 100kg
Despite an impressive result for a first timer it was not the start Skelley had dreamed of
But now he is determined to return to the mat in Odivelas and make his name in one of the toughest weight categories
“I like to beat everyone but obviously I want to beat the likes of [Zviad] Gogotchuri and [Gwang Geun] Choi
Georgia's Gogotchuri and South Korean Choi are two of the most formidable athletes in Skelley’s weight category
Choi is the up to 100kg Paralympic champion while Gogotchuri has made the move up after winning gold in the up to 90kg at Rio 2016
“I think everyone’s targeting first place to be honest
I’m going to try and do my best and win it and if not I’ll give the best possible performance on the day.”
Speaking ahead of the competition’s opening on 16 November
Skelley is nearing the end of an intense training period
In September the British team travelled to Japan for a two-week training camp
Since then they have been preparing at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall and in Hannover
Paralympic and Olympic judokas train alongside each other in an integrated programme
offering the chance for both sets of athletes to access the very best facilities and experts
That helped Skelley to reach the podium at the World Cup in Atyrau
“I wanted to win it obviously but I tried my best and had a good performance on the day and got second place
But hopefully we’ve improved on the areas I need to improve on and ready for the World Championships
“We’re just making sure that I’m doing the basics of judo right and keeping it as simple as possible to get the best quality of judo out of it.”
Crucially former rugby player Skelley believes his strengths are: “My fitness and my conditioning
Just having lots of heart and sticking with it.”
Odivelas 2018 also offers the chance for athletes to secure points for the world rankings
These will determine who gets a ticket to the next Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020
Skelley is fully aware of the challenging road ahead and is taking it step by step
He hopes he will get the chance to improve on his Rio 2016 performance
but is keeping his aspirations under control
I’m just trying to concentrate competition by competition and not get ahead of myself
“I think I just focus on my next performance and try to make it the best one I can possibly do and then by then Tokyo will come round and what will be
Brazil's Alana Maldonado kisses her silver medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games
"It was sensational to compete in Rio with my whole family
it will be sensational to compete where judo was born"
Brazil’s Alana Maldonado is targeting a title on her Judo World Championships debut in Odivelas
in November to add to her Paralympic silver from Rio 2016
Speaking with two years to go until the next Paralympic Games in Tokyo
Maldonado was in a buoyant mood about the Worlds
“I look forward to this very important Championship for me
I will do my best to be champion,” she said
The World Championships will be held from 16-18 November and offers points towards qualification for Tokyo 2020
Maldonado is also conscious that they represent the best chance to assess her competition
“It is the strongest Championship in the cycle before Tokyo
where we will have a parameter for Tokyo,” she said
Having been inspired to start judo at the age of four
Maldonado has a deep passion for the sport
The chance to compete at a Paralympics in Japan
equal to competing at a home Paralympic Games
“Japan is the land of judo and just as it was sensational to compete in Rio with my whole family
it will be sensational to compete where judo was born,” she said
With the women’s -70kg being highly competitive
Maldonado believes that all of her opponents will be difficult to beat
the Brazilian lost to Mexico’s Lenia Ruvalcaba
the bronze medallist from the 2014 World Championships
Earlier in 2018 she claimed second place at the World Cup in Antalya
Maldonado was beaten to first by Russia’s* Olga Zabrodskaya but showed that two years out from Rio 2016
she is still able to challenge for the podium
and I do not see myself doing anything other than judo,”
I overcome obstacles and am always trying to give my best.”
Judo will see nearly 140 athletes compete for honours in 13 weight categories
*Editor's note: The International Paralympic Committee suspended the Russian Paralympic Committee on 7 August 2016 for its inability to fulfil its IPC membership responsibilities and obligations
South Korea's Jung Min Lee celebrates his first world title after beating Azerbaijan’s Huseyn Rahimli
“At the beginning of the match I lost a point
I was nervous and stressed but at the end of the day is a good result.”
South Korean judoka were the stars of the show at the 2018 Judo World Championships in Odivelas
on Saturday (17 November) winning two of the seven golds on offer
Jung Min Lee overcame Azerbaijan’s Huseyn Rahimli in the men’s -81kg
It was gold for the South Korean on his World Championships debut
“I had a serious knee injury but after I recovered
and with this being my first major tournament
I am so happy for winning the gold medal,” Lee said
“At the beginning of the match I lost a point and I had two shido
Russia’s* Ruslan Albagachiev and France’s Nathan Petit secured the bronzes
Ukraine’s defending world champion Irinya Husieva lost out to another South Korean
Olga Pozdnysheva equalled her performance from 2014 in Colorado Springs
The golds for Min Lee and Lee Jin brings South Korea’s medal total to three
with the team events to come on Sunday (18 November)
A physical contest ensued in the men’s -100kg between Georgia’s Paralympic champion Zvid Gogotchuri and Great Britain’s Samuel Ingram
The pair have met twice before with the Georgian winning on both occasions
The result went the way of Gogotchuri once again
Ingram received three shido to hand Gogotchuri his first world title and a successful move up from the -90kg where he won gold at the Rio 2016 Paralympics
Gogotchuri remains unbeaten at an IBSA Judo competition since making his debut in 2015
Great Britain’s Chris Skelley reached his best ever Worlds performance with third
He was joined by Russia’s* 2014 gold medallist Rushan Kuramagomedov
Ukraine had better luck in the men’s -90kg courtesy of top seed and Paralympic silver medallist Oleksandr Nazarenko
With a beautiful sweep of the feet against Russia’s* Vladimir Fedin
the Ukrainian was awarded an ippon to improve on his bronze medal from 2014
Vahid Noura grabbed bronze for Iran after his Moldovan opponent Oleg Cretul pulled out of the contest due to injury
Great Britain’s Elliot Stewart also occupied third place on the podium
A hugely tactical fight in the women’s -70kg saw both fighters break down after the match
one in joy and the other in disappointment
Brazil’s Paralympic silver medallist Alana Martins Maldonado spent most of her fight trying to resist Uzbekistan’s Asian champion Vasila Aliboeva
and it looked to be going the way of the Uzbek
But the tables turned when Martins just managed to topple her opponent and then hold her on the mat for an Ippon
Immediately embracing her coaches after the match
Martins spoke with a broken voice and tears in her eyes
I was tired but I believed until the end and God gave me the strength to get the final move,” Martins said
Mexico’s Paralympic champion Lenia Ruvalcaba will have to wait four more years for her chance at her first world title
Ruvalcaba was beaten by Aliboeva in the semi-final
but overcame Azerbaijan’s Zulfiyya Huseynova for bronze
Russia’s* Olga Zabrodskaia also claimed bronze over Croatia’s Lucija Breskovic
A massive Harai Goshi from China’s Hongyu Wang prompted a huge groan from the crowd in the women’s +70kg
Wang was facing South Korea’s Hayeong Park in a tactical final which was evenly matched despite the height and size of Wang compared to Park
But the Chinese judoka managed a good grip which she converted to a throw as the clock ticked down
Meg Emmerich emerged the victor in an all-Brazilian fight for bronze against Rebeca Silva
Carolina Costa claimed Italy’s first medal of Odivelas 2018
Iran’s Asian Championships bronze medallist Mohammedreza Kheirollahzadeh claimed the title on his World Championships debut
A clever sweep of the heels of South Korea’s Woohyeok Song saw the Iranian bring down his opponent
He then managed to hold a squirming Song on the tatami for ippon
adding to his silver medal from October’s Asian Para Games in Jakarta
“I’m winning this for my nation and my people and with the help of God I was able to win,” Kheirollahzadeh said
“I’m happy with my performance but most of all I hope my coaches are happy with it
It was a very difficult competition and I was able to perform well.”
Azerbaijan’s Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Paralympic champion Ilham Zakiyev showed he still has podium potential
who moved to the +100kg following his bronze from Rio 2016 in the category below
The biggest Worlds in the history of the sport is being shown live at IBSA Judo’s Facebook page and IBSA’s YouTube channel, with finals also shown on the International Paralympic Committee's website
South Korean judokas ruled the 2018 Worlds
With both the World Championships and the Asian Para Games
2018 was certainly a year to remember for judo
South Korean dominance
It was a fantastic year for South Korean judokas
They were in unstoppable form as they topped the medals table of the 2018 World Championships in Odivelas
Soohee Choi sprang the biggest individual surprise as she became the women’s up to 48kg world champion after beating two Paralympic champions in China’s Li Liqing and France’s Sandrine Martinet on her way to the final
South Korea also took both team event titles on offer
Li and Martinet were not the only candidates for gold who were defeated at Odivelas 2018
Azerbaijan's world and Paralympic champion Ramil Gasimov lost to Uzbekistan’s debutant Feruz Sayidov in the men’s up to 73kg and had to settle for bronze
Sayidov’s compatriot and Paralympic champion Sherzod Namozov was dramatically eliminated in the early stages of the men’s up to 60kg

The public tender has been launched for the construction of the Violet Line of the Lisbon Metro
which will serve the municipalities of Loures and Odivelas
This extension of the Metro network is expected to become a reality in the second half of 2026
O Lisbon Metro has launched the tender for the construction of the Violet Line
which will serve the municipalities of Loures and Odivelasthrough a light rail solution
The construction of the Violet Line will cost at least 450 million euros and will be co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and funds from the State Budget
The Violet Line will include a total of 17 stations and about 11.5 km in length
Santo António dos Cavaleiros and Frielasover a length of 6.4 km
Eight stations will be built in the municipality of Odivelas
serving the following areas parishes of Póvoa de Santo Adrião and Olival de Basto
Ramada and Caneçasfor a total length of 5.1 km
The stations Beatriz Ângelo Hospital e Loures Valley will be the end of the Violet Line
which was originally to have two more stations
The stations on the Violet Line will be of different types: 12 above ground
The Violet Line will be integrated with the Yellow Line at its terminus in Odivelas
The two stations will not be interconnected
The Violet Line's Odivelas station will be one of two to be built in a trench:
such as the Ramada Schools or Radial Gardenboth in the municipality of Odivelas
During the public consultation period - and due to opposition from residents of Infantado, in Loures, who did not want to see the space dedicated to cars reduced -
o Violet Line project reduced from 19 to 17 stations
The seasons Quinta de São Roque e Infantado were cut
after the season Loures ValleyThe line was to terminate near the Loureshopping shopping center
This situation forced the project to be revised
The Infantado urbanization will have a Violet Line station
connected to the rest of the Lisbon Metro network
but significantly distant from the residential area
Next to the Loures ValleyThere are plans to build a 129-space parking lot
By Loures Valley When the line is completed
the carriages will have to be parked at night
and this is planned to take place along Avenida das Descobertas
where there will be a room for drivers and a support room for cleaning the carriages
The parking of the carriages and the construction of the support building require the felling of some of the palm trees in the central separator
The existing cycle path is to be maintained
namely its transition from the road channel to the sidewalk area next to the Loureshopping building
The route of the Violet Line has not only been revised in the Infantado area
there have been five changes since the public consultation and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) phase
Another significant change was made at the Beatriz Angelo Hospital. The station that will serve the Loures hospital will be closer to it, benefiting users, but also making it possible to make the Metro route compatible with the future Quinta do Correio-Mor tourist complex
The pedestrian plaza that was planned next to the Beatriz Ângelo Hospital station was canceled and replaced by an exclusive BUS access lane
next to which six stops could be installed
with parking capacity for 15 buses and a sanitary facility for the exclusive use of employees
and due to the reduction of the Infantado project
the maintenance workshops that were planned at this end of the line were moved to the other end
The call for tenders now launched is aimed not only at design and construction of the light rail infrastructure
but also the urban redevelopment of the area surrounding the line and stations
the supply of vehicles (LRV type streetcars
Light Rail Vehicle) and the provision of maintenance services for the rail infrastructure and vehicles for a period of three years.
Bidders have 120 days to submit their bids
Metro de Lisboa requires them to have a minimum useful life of 30 years
a capacity for 60 seated passengers and 180 standing passengers
The Violet Line is a project to expand the intermodal coverage of the current Yellow Line of the Lisbon Metro and is the result of a protocol signed in July 2021 between the transport company and the city councils of Loures and Odivelas
The total investment in the Violet Line will be 527.3 million euros
with 390 million euros coming from the PRR
and 137.3 million euros from the State Budget
The Violet Line is expected to be a reality in the second half of 2026

The spotlight today was on Jorge Fonseca
a local player who won Gold in the under 100kg category
The final agaist the Italian Dominico Di Guida took only 13 seconds and brought a lot of joy to the crowd gathered in the Odivelas Sports Hall
It´s the fifth medal at an international competition that Fonseca has won this year
including the recent bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb
the Portuguese player confirms himself as one of the biggest stars of the present national team
The current U23 European Champion collected three ippon wins and one waza-ari win on route to the gold medal
“It was very important to me to compete at home
My goal today was to win and being able to compete in Portugal was a big motivation for me
To lose the final would have been very disappointing because I wanted to bring joy to my friends and loved ones
My goal is qualification for the Olympic Games”
Without any doubt Fonseca is one of the Portuguese hopes for Rio de Janeiro 2016
What is also worth mentioning is a fine performance from Julian Kermarrec of France who won bronze in the under 81 kg category against Tom Reed from Great Britain with an effective sasae for ippon
The category was won by Japanese Joichi Hirao

The Violet Line is planned for the end of 2025 and will connect
The project is in public consultation until mid-February
It will be the Violet Line of the Lisbon Metro
A light rail line between Loures and Odivelas
which will promote a fast and structuring connection between the important centers of the two municipalities
connecting Beatriz Ângelo Hospital to Infantadowith transfer and interface to Lisbon in the Odivelas Metro station
The project is registered in the PRR and has the end of 2025 as the conclusion date
With a total of 19 stations and about 13 km in lengthThe Violet Line will serve the municipality of Loures with 11 stations in the parishes of Loures
Santo António dos Cavaleiros and Frielas in an extension of about 7.4 km
and in the municipality of Odivelas eight stations will be implemented in the parishes of Póvoa de Sto
Ramada and Caneças in a total extension of about 5.1 km
Most of the stations (14) will be above ground
but there will be three underground stations and two in "trench" (that is
Most of the route (66%) will also be above ground; only in the municipality of Odivelas will the Violet Line run mostly underground
The underground and "trench" components will be 28% and 3% of the total route
That leaves 3% of the line (about 400 meters)
which corresponds to the viaduct parts - one viaduct is planned in Póvoa de Santo Adrião and another in Infantado
These will be the 19 stations of the Violet Line:
The Violet Line will start at the surface near the Beatriz Ângelo Hospitalwith a station right next to this hospital equipment and that will be made compatible with the so-called Detailed Plan of Quinta do Correio-Mor
the line follows in trench and tunnel to overcome an area of steeper relief towards Ramada
The next station will be the Caldeira PlateauThe line continues in plain sight with the station on the surface
The line continues in plain sight with the Bela Vista Towerswhere about 150 parking spaces are planned; it enters a tunnel with the stations Radial Gardenin a predominantly residential and high density area in the north of the Odivelas county
and Ramada SchoolsIt will serve an area that is also densely populated and where there are two schools and a health center
with a difference of about 15 meters in relation to Rua Hermínia Silva and practically level with Rua Combatentes do Ultramar
Here it is foreseen a total of 98 parking spaces and also the creation of a public green space in the surroundings of the station
cooking that entire urban area and extending to the south the already existing Integrated Park of Ribeirada
do Castelinho GardenIt will be underground and will serve a residential area
The project foresees the creation and reinforcement of trees and pedestrian and cycling corridors
the subway will stop at Odivelas Station and make the connection to the Yellow Line
the central part of Rua José Gomes Monteiro
and its construction will be the pretext for requalifying a needy urban area
improving pedestrian accessibility and afforestation
The Violet Line will follow the surface along the N8 national road and cross the A8 freeway to the next station
the Heroes of ChaimiteIt serves not only a commercial zone and a gymnasium
but also the urban core of Olival Basto and an industrial zone with a significant number of jobs
Next are the stations D'El-Rei Fountain e Póvoa de Santo Adrião
To ensure the preservation of the historic center of Póvoa de Santo Adrião
the route of the light rail line leaves the alignment of the EN8 and deviates to align itself parallel to the Póvoa stream
to the west of this water line and preserving the water domain
where a road variant to the EN8 would be planned
The station will serve the old core of Póvoa de Santo Adrião
providing the opportunity to create a new green space
the line returns to the EN8 with the stations Flemish e St
At the exit of Santo António dos Cavaleiros station
the line plunges again into a tunnel to cross an urban residential
and to overcome the increase in the slope of the terrain
The line returns to the surface again to the Santo António dos Cavaleiros station
Almirante's FarmThe station is the largest in the world
but also various economic activities and sports facilities
the Loureswill be located on the west side of the Avenida das Descobertas
and will serve a school and also the historic core of Loures
After passing over the A8 on a dedicated viaduct (north of the existing viaduct)
the line continues to develop over the Avenida das Descobertas
with the station Loures Valleynext to the LoureShopping commercial surface
Right after that comes the station Quinta de São RoqueThis will be the line's terminus station
and will be located in an area of high urban density
with several commercial areas and various facilities
the track continues to the Parque de Material e Oficinas (PMO)
The PMO will be where the Violet Line trains will "sleep" and be repaired
This park will be located in a forested and agricultural area of Quinta das Carrafouchas of about four hectares
The future Violet Line of the Lisbon Metro will have 11 trains running in the morning and afternoon rush hours in school term
which will mean waiting times of 7 minutes and an estimate of 2270 passengers carried per hour
The trains will take about 38 minutes to run the entire route
but will connect to the Yellow Line about halfway through
The maximum speed of circulation will be 50 km/h in urban areas and 70 km/h outside cities or in tunnels
The proposed vehicles are 18 to 40 meters long
capable of carrying 40 to 80 seated passengers and 100 to 230 standing passengers
and have low floors for full accessibility
with a restructuring of the public road transport offer
can attract close to 12 million annual passengers as soon as 2026the first year of operation
The construction of the Violet Line will lead to urban redevelopment
There are plans to build bi-directional parking lots near some of the stations and
a bidirectional bicycle path along the future line
The Violet Line is expected to cost 250 million euros to be built and, like the expansion of the Red Line to Alcântara, it is an investment included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP)The expected completion date of the contract is last quarter of 2025
which is carrying out this project with the municipalities of Loures and Odivelas
has already received 32.5 million euros from the European "bazooka"
It is estimated that the urban reorganization and the necessary expropriations will cost the municipalities of Loures and Odivelas between 80 and 70 million euros

Reaching over 400,000 people a week with news about Portugal
It has been known since 2018 that the Yellow Line will run from Odivelas to downtown Lisbon
but a recent TVI news story has thrown media confusion around the future of the Lisbon Metro operation
At the end of May, the TVI launched the meditative mess with one news item indicating that the government had done "a sudden reverse gear" on the circular line and that the project would now remain on paper
was echoed in other media organs; and led the current Minister of the Environment
But will there really be a circular line after all? Or we will have a "looped line"with a direct connection from Odivelas to downtown Lisbon
The most important point is this: the Yellow Line at peak demand times in the morning and afternoon will continue to connect Odivelas to downtown Lisbon
been transmitting this information to the councilmen and the population in several municipal meetings
For his part, in February 2019, the then Assistant Secretary of State and Mobility, José Gomes Mendes (PS), wrote in the newspaper Público which "trains from Odivelas will be able to enter the new circular line and transport passengers to the city center
And he added the following: “About 36% of passengers who currently board at Odivelas do not continue their trip south of Campo Grande
either because they get off at the previous stations or because they leave at that station to switch to the Green Line
those destined for the stations on the western side of the ring will be able to continue their journey on the Yellow Line train
while those heading for the stations on the eastern side of the ring will transfer at Campo Grande
but will now enjoy a frequency of trains under four minutes."
the circular line and other movements are possible"The government of Antonio Costa has a final decision to make; but it has left the transport company's disagreement with the line-sharing model: "We consider that this is not an effective model of operation."
The very Environmental Impact Study of the Circular Line
although the project includes the construction of two new viaducts in the Campo Grande area (...)
the existing viaducts will not be deactivated
Trains originating in Odivelas may continue with the direct connection to Lisbon's central axis
just as those coming from Telheiras may continue with the direct connection to Av
two situations were compared: a closed ring between Campo Grande and Cais do Sodré and the separation of the Yellow Line for the route between Odivelas and Telheiras; or maintaining two independent lines
the Green Line (between Telheiras and Cais do Sodré) and the Yellow Line (extended from Rato to Cais do Sodré
It was concluded that making a ring road was more advantageous
allowing 318 million passengers to be captured during the first 30 years of operation and nine million passengers in the first year - That is
109 million more passengers in three decades and three million more in the first year than if the two independent lines were maintained
None of the construction work currently underway on the circular line blocks this operating model
the two new viaducts in the Campo Grande area only add connections between the current Green and Yellow linesThe old viaducts will remain
so a train coming from Odivelas can still go to Rato but can also go to Telheiras
or a train coming from Rato can go to Odivelas or follow the way to Alvalade
an alternating operation between a circular model and another circulation model is not so simple to realize
explains to LPP that they are being new switchgear placed that will automatically allow the routes of the new circular lineThis means that a train from Cidade Universitária can go to Alvalade without human intervention
But if that train from Cidade Universitária wants to do a different route than the circular line and go to Odivelas
it will have to go at a reduced speed and there will have to be a human operator
without the need for a person to intervene
it would have to be an additional investment in track changing equipment
which the specialist estimates at 10 million ("but I may be being pessimistic")
Santos e Silva also clarifies that it is not a good idea to interchange trains in different directions for safety and operational reasons - i.e
it's not a good idea to have round-line trains mixed with loop-line trains
operating a circular line model (with the apparatus in the deviated position) for a certain period of time and a loop line model (with those apparatus in the direct position) for another period of time
This is because Interleaving the two operation dynamics would have a direct impact on the intervals between trains
because additional time would be needed in the Campo Grande area to prove the safety conditions and for the movement of the switches and crossings
"The signaling system always establishes the safety conditions for train movement
it will stop the train from Odivelas before it reaches Campo Grande and
after the train coming from Cidade Universitária to Alvalade passes by
it confirms that the devices are in the correct position for the Odivelas train to move forward
this while preventing a new train coming from Alvalade from approaching"says the specialist
The aforementioned TVI news story came after a statement sent by the Lumiar Borough Council to the newsrooms
this local authority wrote the following: "The Lumiar Parish Council welcomes the assumption by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Action that the option of the circular line rather than the loop line is not yet closed
leaving the assurance that the work in progress allows to opt for either of the two solutions
the solution advocated by the Lumiar Parish Council is the only option that does not isolate the largest parish in the city of Lisbon."
The Lumiar Parish Council had just had a meeting with Duarte Cordeiro about the closure of the works in Campo Grande that closed the Telheiras station for two months and created chaos on the Green Line
It was a meeting similar to those that Odivelas had already had with the same ministry and in which similar guarantees were given
gave some more details about the meeting: said that the Minister of the Environment has expressed his availability to study a loop operation (which could take trains from Odivelas to Cais do Sodré and from here to Telheiras
which would work in conjunction with the circular linebut he said that no details were discussed - because it is up to Metro de Lisboa to understand what can be done from a technical and safety point of view
Mexia reaffirmed his disagreement with the circular line model for isolating three of the four metro stations in the parish - an idea that was expressed in the coalition's electoral program New Times for which he was elected (Carlos Moedas also defends the looped line)
sem colocar em causa a possibilidade de outros tipos de operação
como o funcionamento habitualmente designado pela expressão ‘em laço’ ou a combinação destes tipos de funcionamento”adding that "the decision on the operation model
will be defined in due time by Metro de Lisboa
supported by the demand and operation studies that will support it".
For the Mayor of Odivelas, the guarantees reaffirmed by the national executive are good news for the municipality he leads."When the new Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, took office, I expressed my ambition that the loop line was still possible and feasible. I was promised that it would be studied"., advanced Hugo Martins (PS) at the town hall meeting on May 31, 2023
"So we started with a closed project of a circular line and amputation of the Yellow Line
We did our work last term and ensured that we shared the line at least during peak hours
even though it was said by all parties that I was not telling the truth and that the Minister was lying
We moved from that solution to the study also of a loop operation."
Hugo Martins doesn't know what operation will actually take place when all the works are finished
but he is sure that it will already "it was worth everything we did and all the civic movements" because there are now other possibilities on the table
we may even realize that the best for people is the circular line with transfer"he summarized
The Odivelas PS never agreed with the Circular Line and we tried to minimize the impacts of its effectiveness"the Mayor of Odivelas also said at the May 31

Highland Boxing Academy head coach Liam Foy has hailed Ewan Gliniecki’s performance at the Odivelas Box Cup as one of the finest achievements he has seen at the club
Alness teenager Gliniecki won three bouts to claim a gold medal in Portugal
In the quarter final he stopped Welsh boxer Thomas Jones in the third round
before claiming a unanimous decision win over Ireland’s Malo Davis in the semi final
That left a gold medal bout against hometown boxer Wamy Esteves
where once again the judges ruled unanimously in favour of Gliniecki
but to go over to Portugal and beat the level of boxers he faced
it’s up there with one of the best results we’ve had,” Foy insisted
“He also picked up the best schoolboy boxer of the tournament
we’ve never failed to come away with a champion
but we’ve never picked up the best boxer in a division."

All three of Inverness City Boxing Club’s athletes at the Odivelas Box Cup in Portugal came home with medals.
Adian Williamson was the top performer, winning gold in the junior elite division, while George Stewart and Calum Turnbull both had to settle for bronze.
Alness teenager Williamson won through a quarter final, semi final and final, each time by unanimous decision, finally defeating Italian boxer Federico Lucchesi.
For Inverness City coach Laurie Redfern, it was a showing that proved he is one to keep an eye on.
“Adian is showing a lot of promise, he’s coming on all the time,” Redfern insisted.
“That was his 21st contest in the final since he started his boxing with me, and he has only lost three times.
“He is still only a junior, so we’re looking for big things in the future from Adian.
“I’m really pleased with him, he was a wee star.”
Stewart and Turnbull both ended up on the wrong ends of decisions – two calls from the judges that Redfern disagreed with.
Turnbull was making his return to competitive action after spending time out injured with a broken wrist. He was due to compete in Cyprus two months ago only for his opponent to pull out.
His first bout back was a successful one, winning against an Italian boxer in the quarter final.
But an unfortunate collision in his semi final ended up closing out his Box Cup early.
“There wasn’t a lot in it, then there was a clash of heads,” Redfern remembered.
“His opponent had got a cut in his hairline, blood trickling down his face. In amateur boxing they’re pretty strict – the doctor looked at them and said the boy couldn’t carry on with the cut, so we went back to the scorecards.
“We were halfway through the second round, and for me Calum won the first, so how they decided the other boy won I haven’t got a clue.”
Stewart got knocked out by the eventual winner, Englishman Billy Adams, but put up a strong showing in a back and forth contest.
“In the last round I thought we had done enough, and it went the other way,” Redfern said.
“Adams is an English international, and he won the European Championships. He’s a top class boxer.
“I said to George if we win this last round, we’ll win it, and for me he did.”
Billy Le Poullain will head a three-man Guernsey team to a brand new challenge this weekend – the Odivelas Box Cup in Lisbon
Casey de la Mare and Jimmy Lesbirel are all making the trip to Portugal for the fourth edition of the tournament featuring boxers from Europe and Africa
They will be joined by their head coach Ben Duff
who says this step into the unknown for the trio will be hugely beneficial
'The experience will be invaluable because currently we only box against English and Welsh teams and compete in English tournaments
so it will be a whole new experience,' he said
'Out of the 35 teams competing only three of them are British
and the competition is structured so that boxers from the same nations will not be allowed to compete against each other until the later stages
'Looking through the team list I've noticed a German Boxing Association team and Sweden team
which sound more like national select teams than a club team
so it will be interesting to see what they're like
'We're going into the tournament open-minded and our aim is to progress as far as possible and hopefully win them.'
The announcement on Monday, September 20, 2021, by Metropolitano de Lisboa, of the signing of the financing contracts included a breakdown of the investments: the “Expansion of the Lisbon Metro Network - Red Line to Alcântara” will receive financing of 304 million euros while the “Metro Light Surface Odivelas-Loures” foresees a financing of 250 million euros. These represent “amounts corresponding, in both projects, to the total cost of the investment”.
The two contracts account for an investment of 554 million euros from the PRR and "have a deadline for completion on December 31, 2025 ", indicated Metropolitano de Lisboa, in a statement, adding that the objective is to "continue to improve urban mobility from the perspective of sustainable development and decarbonization, with the associated environmental benefits”.
The extension of the red line from São Sebastião to Alcântara will have “a length of four kilometers and four new stations: Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, Infante Santo and Alcântara. This will create the last link in the future Sustainable Intermodal Line connecting to the municipality of Oeiras (Western LIOS)”, said the company.
By IngolfBLN - Metro de Lisboa - Estação São Sebastião Uploaded by jcornelius, CC BY-SA 2.0According to Metropolitano de Lisboa, the Odivelas-Loures Surface Light Metro will provide “a total of 18 stations and 12 kilometers of network”, on a line that will extend “into the 'C' corridor, which will connect Hospital Beatriz Ângelo to Infantado, with transfers to Lisbon at the underground station in Odivelas”.
In April, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action said 554 million euros of the PRR would be invested in extending the red line of the Metropolitano de Lisboa and expanding it to Loures.
João Pedro Matos Fernandes was speaking at the consignment signing session for lot 1 of the Lisbon Underground Expansion Plan for the connection of Rato stations to Cais do Sodré, with the construction of two new stops in Estrela and Santos, an investment of around 210 million euros, with the project being completed in 2024.
“When the idea of the Recovery and Resilience Plan came up, we knew well where to invest; it will be 554 million euros to build two lines [of the Lisbon underground]. The first is the extension of the red line through Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, Infante Santo and Alcântara and then connecting to the train”, said Matos Fernandes at the time.
At the time, Matos Fernandes also said that the investment would also be for the expansion of the surface light rail that will connect Odivelas to Infantado, serving Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (Loures) and Alto de Santo António dos Cavaleiros.
