The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is an exceptional geographical unit located in the south-eastern part of the Principality of Andorra
It covers an area of 4,247 ha or a little more than 9% of the national territory
A protective buffer zone of 4,092 ha surrounds this area
The upper part of the valley is an exposed glacial landscape
the valley narrows and becomes more wooded
while in its lowest section the river flows into a short gorge
merges with the Madriu Valley from the South-West
The Madriu-Perfita-Claror Valley is a microcosm that illustrates the way in which man has harvested the mountain resources over the past millennia
It also reflects the persistence of an ancient communal system of land management – four communities own land within the property
Its spectacular glacial landscapes with vast pastures and wooded valleys reflect climate change
the last place in the country not to have roads
comprises amongst others diverse agro-pastoral complexes in the high mountain
agricultural centres in mid-mountain areas
a communication system based on a network of partially paved trails and the vestiges of a specific steelmaking activity: the Catalan Forge
the inscribed site contains many traces of human occupation that express in a singular manner the perfect symbiosis and the precious balance between the land and humankind
between their resources and their needs; among these
bornes or small huts with vaulted stone roofs
some of which are still used by shepherds; orris in ruin
houses with side barns where grain and hay were stored; traces of terraced fields and foundries; low stone walls and paved tracks
Criterion (v) : The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is a microcosm of the way the inhabitants have harvested the scarce resources of the high Pyrenees over the past millennia to create a sustainable living environment in harmony with the mountain landscape
The valley is a reflection of an ancient communal system of land management that has survived over 700 years
The integrity of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is based on the geographical and historical uniqueness that characterizes it
The Valley forms a coherent unit of 4,247 ha combining cultural and natural values
In this encyclopaedic and essential landscape
the sedimentation of the physical and human experience is continuous
including the extension in 2006 to the international border between Andorra and Spain
have enabled the protection of the entire property
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley bears an extraordinarily well-preserved and complete testimony to a way of life and relationship between people and their land
a distinctive relationship between the populations and nature is evident
Based on respect for the environment and its emblematic character
this relationship has never faltered among the local population
Its character is defined by the wise use of the resources offered by the mountain and by the deep respect for the associated values and qualities
The customary standards that have preserved it and that rule it are the result of this symbiosis between man and his environment
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley conserves its qualities intact
Historically preserved because of its distance from urban pressure areas and
the few interventions that could affect its authenticity
such as the use of some construction materials or the presence of mobile huts that do not conform to the heritage character of the Valley
Listed as property of cultural interest in the category of cultural landscapes
the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is protected by the Law 9/2003 for cultural heritage of Andorra
the protection zone prescribed by the Law was harmonized with the buffer zone
With regard to the management of the property
in agreement with the Law and the Declaration and Protection Decrees
the four local administrations concerned with the management of the Valley drafted and approved a management document that was validated by the Andorran Government
The Management Plan for the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley entered into force on 28 December 2011
and foresees the preservation of the cultural landscape
In accordance with efficient conservation goals
it controls the associated objectives and establishes the development of sustainable activities
it emphasizes the need to maintain traditional activities such as agriculture
which has noticeably declined and will require revitalization and support programmes so that the cultural landscape of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley remains a living landscape and conserves the authenticity provided by the continuance of these cultural practices
priority was given to the realization of an overall access strategy

we cure anchovies differently than anywhere else,” Rafel Martín Faixó told us
We were sitting at long wooden tables outside of his family’s winery
Rafel is the son of Carmen Faixó and Rafa Martín Mota
and together with his sisters Ester and Georgina
the five of them comprise the Martín Faixó (MF family) brand
featuring three restaurants in Cadaqués and the Celler Martín Faixó winery
“My father’s family has been in Cadaqués for a few generations,” Rafel said
Our anchovy recipe comes from my mother’s family
and it’s at least 300 years old.” Unlike almost everywhere else along the Mediterranean
cracked black pepper is used in addition to the salt when curing anchovies
The pepper not only adds a new dimension of flavor to the tenderized flesh
the anchovies made by the MF family take about one year to go from the sea to your plate
with steep and treacherous slate-cobbled streets and pristine white walls
It has managed to remain insulated from the rest of the ever-developing Costa Brava for centuries
The long and winding mountain road that all visitors must traverse before arriving at this deep natural harbor
just 30 kilometers from the southern French border
has thwarted large-scale building projects like those in other coastal towns
The town is located on the Cap de Creus peninsula – the most eastern point in Spain and the spot where the mighty Pyrenees finally end
tumbling in a jagged heap into the Mediterranean
Just 10 minutes up the mountain from Cadaqués
right at the peak in the road where you either veer right and head north toward France or down into the town of Roses and the flat
expansive plain that lies at the southern feet of the Pyrenees
a Catalan masia (farmhouse) from the year 1300
After falling into serious disrepair and living a short life as a seedy nightclub in the 1980s
Sa Perafita was purchased by the MF family
who transformed it into a winery and seven-room boutique “rural hotel.” As we strolled the beautiful property
with its views of impressive mountain peaks in the distance and the family’s own lush vineyards below
Ester Martín Faixó shared the genesis of their winemaking enterprise
The family purchased land that had belonged to a Belgian housing community in 2000
and the big stone and timber farmhouse began to be restored
The first harvest from these new vines was in 2004
and the first wine bottled under the Celler Martín Faixó label was in 2007
We had the pleasure of being invited to the family and friends’ “End of Harvest” lunch at Celler Martín Faixó in mid-September and witnessed firsthand the passion that goes into making this family’s prized wines
Everyone – from the current generation to the grandparents – pitches in during the harvest
though this work is done more out of pleasure than necessity
Apart from the core family members and other MF employees
outside help is hired during the harvest to perform the bulk of this often intense work
as all 14 hectares of grapes of Celler Martín Faixó are harvested by hand – that’s 60,000 kg of grapes annually
We arrived to find the winery a hive of activity
as the final harvest had been collected that morning
and they were busy sorting ripe garnatxa grapes by hand on a long conveyer belt that led to the crusher
The red grapes are gently pressed to release their juices and then allowed to ferment with the skins in huge stainless steel tanks in a back room of the ancient farmhouse building
Family and friends laughed and joked as they quickly removed any rocks
leaves or insects from the grape bunches rolling down the belt
and everyone headed out happily to the lawn
Endless bottles of the family’s white (100 percent picapoll)
rosé (garnatxa and merlot) and red (garnatxa) wines accompanied platters of their cured anchovies
massive loaves of crusty peasant bread and a ripe tomato salad with house-cured olives
sweet onions and a reduction of the MF vermouth (made from an atypical base of oak-aged cabernet sauvignon)
Up next were heaps of steamed clams and mussels
followed by an aromatic fideuà (noodle) casserole with sausage and pork ribs
Rich chocolate cake and many boxes of taps de Cadaqués
a local type of sponge cake in the shape of a cava cork
Though the history of the MF wine business itself is relatively young
the Martín and Faixó families have been carving out a name for themselves in the Cadaqués food scene for more than 50 years
starting with the founding of the famous Casa Anita restaurant by Rafa’s mother in 1960
Casa Anita now lays claim to the title of “oldest restaurant in town” and is still going strong
Meliton Faixó founded the Cadaqués stalwart Bar Meliton around the same time
Both Casa Anita and Bar Meliton were favorite haunts of iconic town figures such as Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí
and the walls are still adorned with relics and reminders of this era
the same year that they opened their own restaurant
right on the main passeig of the Cadaqués waterfront
Can Rafa has risen to the top of the local dining list
specializing in local seafood and rice dishes (the arrós negre
or “black rice” with cuttlefish and squid ink was our favorite)
the torch has been passed to the new generation
as all three of the Martín Faixó children (now in their 20s and 30s) are deeply involved in running the family businesses
Ester taking the reins of the Verástil Crepery just two doors down
and Rafel running Enoteca MF around the corner
a wine and tapas bar/specialty shop that is the family’s most recent endeavor
At first
the business plan was to open only a wine bar that featured the Celler Martín Faixó line and served a few snacks to go with the libations as well as a shop that acted as an outlet to sell their house-cured olives and anchovies
customers clamored for more substantial food offerings
and the Enoteca quickly became a full-blown tapas bar with a menu that reflects the seasons
Rafel is the head of the kitchen and cooks many of the dishes with the support of former Michelin-starred chef Joan Borràs
who is in charge of the central kitchen facility at Sa Perafita (where most of the Enoteca prep work is done)
With intriguing dishes like seared pig foot roulade with pistou
and cuttlefish canelons with a squid ink sauce
Rafel led us to the water just 10 meters from where we were sitting and showed us what looked like a weed with small yellow flowers growing out of a stone wall along the beach
lemony flavor that is a perfect complement to rich fish species like tuna or salmon
Locals concur that the best months to visit Cadaqués are June and September; the weather is beautiful and the tourists are few
August is absolutely unbearable because of the crowds
except for some weeks in November and another few around Christmas
the MF family’s businesses are running at full tilt
It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere in town without seeing a bit of the MF family
be it the members themselves out for a morning coffee
or their wines and olive oil in restaurants and markets all across Cadaqués
they have been among the most welcoming we have been lucky enough to meet
and no trip to Cadaqués would be complete without sampling at least one of this foodie family’s gastronomic labors of love

Aveiro and Porto are the locations chosen to move forward with three sustainable aviation fuel projects.
According to ECO, Smartenergy
a company based in Switzerland wants to invest in the energy transition from Portugal and has three projects dedicated to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) planned for Portugal
Lisbon, Aveiro and Porto are the locations chosen to move forward with these three projects, said Pedro Guedes de Campos, director of Hydrogen and SAF Business Development at Smartenergy, at a conference organised by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN)
the company will be able to respond to 21% of aviation fuel consumption in Portugal and
considering the current limitation of only being able to mix SAF by 50% with traditional fuels
the director of Smartenergy elaborated on a particular project: the Leça H2 Green Valley (Vale do Hidrogénio Verde de Leça)
The objective is to produce green hydrogen that fuels the production of sustainable aviation fuel
The idea is that Smartenergy will be responsible for producing green hydrogen that will be transported
with which Smartenergy already has a memorandum of understanding
the concession of which is in the hands of REN
which connects Quereledo (the location where Smartenergy wants to produce green hydrogen) to Perafita
where there is an old refinery and where another potential partner
This gas pipeline has a characteristic that allows it to be used to transport 100% hydrogen
the green hydrogen would serve the factory of synthetic sustainable fuels
Smartenergy wants to take advantage of the CO2 generated in Lipor's activities to produce its fuels
An agreement is being finalised with Lipor that brings together the three parties – Smartenergy
The location is privileged not only considering the gas pipeline
but also the proximity to the Port of Leixões and Francisco de Sá Carneiro airport
The project involves 390 megawatts-peak (MWp) of photovoltaic installation and 75 MW of wind generation
to fuel the production of green hydrogen; This production presupposes a “machine” that makes hydrogen possible
the goal is to obtain between 13,300 to 34,200 tons of hydrogen and 20,000 to 50,000 tons of jet fuel annually

with the extension of Japanese powerhouse midfielder Rei Tachikawa

The 26-year-old appeared in 22 matches across the Indian Super League and Kalinga Super Cup
scoring five goals and creating 25 chances
Tachikawa is the first foreign signing announced and will continue to be a key part of the squad as it begins its preparations under Head Coach Khalid Jamil

which is what I look for in every player during training and games”
Tachikawa was one of the top-performing foreign players of Asian origin in ISL last season
He joined Jamshedpur FC from Maltese side Sirens FC in 2023
where he had already made a name for himself with 23 appearances and two goals
His journey in European football began with Portuguese side Perafita and continued with Felgueiras

making him a pivotal player for Jamshedpur FC
Tachikawa expressed his excitement about continuing with the club
“I’m thrilled to stay with Jamshedpur FC,” said Tachikawa
“The support from the fans and the unique culture of Jharkhand and India have made my time here thoroughly enjoyable
I am looking to build from last season's performance and contribute more to help the club achieve new milestones.”

the Men of Steel have signed Japanese sensation
Rei Tachikawa for the upcoming season.
The 25-year-old midfielder will join from Maltan side Sirens FC
where he made 23 appearances last season and scored two goals
The Japanese player brings plenty of experience playing in the Maltese Premier League
with a previous two-year stint at Santa Lucia from 2019-2021
Rei made his name in Europe after leaving local club Osaka Uni H&SS in 2018 to join Portuguese side Perafita
A move to fellow Portuguese side Felgueiras soon followed
before his love affair with the country of Malta began in 2019 as he moved to Santa Lucia.
“I’m so excited to finally come to Jamshedpur FC,” said Rei Tachikawa on joining the Men of Steel.
“The club has proved its worth on a national stage by winning trophies and entertaining fans
and I’m very happy to finally be here
The culture of India and Jharkhand is unique and special and playing football here is a challenge that I welcome with open arms
I’m sure that I can help the team win even more this season.”
Versatility is something that Tachikawa brings in spades to Jamshedpur
he can also operate in several attacking positions across the park to supplement the team’s attack
making him a nuisance in the opposition’s half.
“Rei Tachikawa is a player that people will sit up and take notice of,” said Jamshedpur FC Head Coach Scott Cooper.
“He is a technical and high-tempo player who can get forward and score goals with both feet as well as his head
His passing game is good and he is very competitive
He has played in Europe too and I think he will be an excellent signing for us.”
The club can also confirm that Rei will don the number 8 shirt for the Men of Steel in the upcoming campaign
