Yushae DeSilva-Andrade took a huge scalp when beating the world No 1 player in the Povoa de Varzim World Boccia Cup in Portugal
DeSilva-Andrade bounced back from a disappointing 11-1 defeat to Thailand’s Satanan Phromsiri on Wednesday to beat Singapore’s Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan
The Bermudian will now play her final pool match tomorrow against Bat-El Brightman Ha Cohen
but will need Tan to lose if she is to progress from her group
Coach Larry Hunt was pleased at the way DeSilva-Andrade bounced back from defeat
“She showed a lot of character coming back from an 11-1 loss yesterday to beat the world No 1,” Hunt said
“It’s a great accomplishment for her and if the world No 1 loses again tomorrow and Yushae wins then she will go through with the girl from Thailand
“With this win under her belt she is very confident
Omar Hayward is also in action and was unlucky not to pick up a win
losing 4-2 to Jose de Oliveira from Brazil and 7-4 to world No 3 David Smith before ending the group with an 8-2 defeat to Martin Frkovic
Hunt was pleased with Hayward’s performance and felt he deserved to pick up some points
“Omar played well and deserved to get more than what he did,” Hunt said
“He was only just beaten by the world No 3 and was well in the game until the end
“He is a bit down because he deserved to win at least one
of those matches but he knows he showed a lot of improvement and hopefully he will get there next time.”

Eight communities in Northern Portugal are benefiting from increased access to convenient
door-to-door recycling collection and other related services
The aim was to get more people to recycle by making it convient for residents
This project reduced the distance between the recycling collection bins and the citizen
thus improving the separation and collection network offered to the population
The project expanded recycling services in eight municipalities: Espinho
Door-to-door collection to households and businesses was increased and more bins were made available in public places
Backed by a robust awareness-building campaign
the project succeeded in collecting 3 800 tonnes of recyclable materials – four times more than what was expected
the project expanded door-to-door household recycling collection to include an additional 12 450 homes
Each home received either a 40 litre or 140 litre container for collecting mixed waste recycling (paper
Some communities offered additional bins for biowaste collection
The project provided door-to-door collection services to nearly 600 businesses and other establishments
in addition to adding 212 more street bins to the region’s network
The project added 11 state-of-the-art collection vehicles to the current fleet and built a new recycling centre in Póvoa de Varzim
The initiative was backed by a multi-faceted communications campaign that aimed to not only raise awareness about the project
but also motivate citizens and businesses to participate
Project coordinators believe the campaign reached nearly 1 million people.
each recycling bin given to a home or business was equipped with a portable ultra-high frequency (UHF) Radio-Frequency ID (RFID) reader that
when used with an application developed by the project
allows authorities to track whose bin belongs to whom
All collection trucks were outfitted with a UHF RFID that
in conjunction with the readers embedded in the bins
allowed for monitoring of participation in the project and adjustment of awareness-raising efforts
it achieved a significant increase in the amount of recyclable materials collected (3 800 tonnes)
It reduced the amount of recyclables in the mixed waste stream from 32.5 % in 2017 to 29.4 % in 2019
As this is the equivalent of 12 000 tonnes of recyclable material being kept out of the community’s energy recovery plant
the project contributed to the reduction of waste management company LIPOR’s greenhouse gas emissions
Total investment for the project “Recycling is to Give More - Door to Door and Proximity Selective Collection” is EUR 3 874 646
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 3 239 707 through the “Sustainability and Resource Use Efficiency” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Environment Protection and promotion of resource efficiency”

‘We will strive to do better going forward,’ says American fashion designer

Tory Burch has apologised after being criticised for selling a sweatshirt that bears a striking resemblance to a garment traditionally worn by Portuguese fisherman
Fashion industry watchdog Diet Prada pointed out the similarities in a post on Instagram that featured the traditional garment alongside the American designer’s one.
In the caption, Diet Prada described the garment as “a sweater for sale, barely imperceptible from the camisolas poveiras traditionally worn since the early 1800s by Portuguese fisherman from Póvoa de Varzim.”
The caption went on to quote Ricardo Silva, president of the parish union of Póvoa de Varzim, who called out Tory Burch on Facebook, writing: “The incredible story of how an international brand Tory Burch presents our Poveira Jersey as its own.
“David’s fight against a Goliath that usurps, does not respond and does not recognize one of the main pieces of Portuguese handicrafts.”
Diet Prada pointed out that Burch’s original design was listed as “Baja-inspired tunic”, which is a reference to Baja California, a state in Mexico.
“[It] features an embroidered motif of crabs and the Portuguese coat of arms,” the caption continues.
“The embroidery looks like traditional Portuguese techniques rather than intarsia knitting, which is undoubtedly easier to mass produce. Even the garter stitched details at the edges are similar.”
Diet Prada notes how these sweaters were often worn for celebrations and voyages of pilgrimage, and that the embroidery is so synonymous with Póvoa de Varzim that it is often used on souvenirs sold there.
Ms Burch’s listing now describes the jumper as “sweater tunic”.
In response to Diet Prada’s claims, Ms Burch has apologised and accepted her “mistake”.
“We absolutely acknowledge this mistake and take full responsibility,” wrote the designer in a comment beneath Diet Prada’s post.
“It was brought o our attention that we mis-attributed this sweater and did not realise its origin.
“We are working with the city of Póvoa de Varzim to rectify this error. We celebrate all cultures and we will strive to do better going forward.”

it's important to pay attention to water quality
in Greater Porto and other areas of the north
bacterial contamination led to a temporary ban on bathing
If there are beaches that stand out for their “Golden quality” there are also others who stand out for less positive reasons
there are three beaches not recommended to bathing
the Administration of the Northern Hydrographic Region (AHR Norte ) recently carried out analyses
Abnormally high values of escherichia coli bacteria (2383 per 100 ml) and intestinal sterococci (117 per 100 ml),” says the same source
This contrasts with the results for June and the first week of July
the beaches of Matosinhos and Vila Praia de Âncora are facing a similar situation
so bathing is also temporarily not recommended
