Author: CÂMARA MUNICIPAL DE LOULÉ; This is a preview of the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira, which was won by Hugo Milner of Great Britain and Lisa Tertsch of Germany Following the cancellation two weeks ago of World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi draft-legal racing is back on the agenda this coming weekend the first ever World Triathlon Cup Hong Kong will certainly take the lion’s share of the headlines it’s well worth keeping your eyes on the action that will be taking place on Portugal’s Algarve on Saturday afternoon The prize purse on offer at the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira may be less than a quarter of what will be distributed in the special administrative region in China but there’s a fair chance we could be watching at least one medallist from Paris 2024. Perhaps some early clues as to their prospects this summer Here are a few reasons to take note of this one – and watch it live A long-standing and popular race on the Europe Triathlon calendar this Olympic distance event has certainly benefitted from that Abu Dhabi cancellation with plenty of top quality European competition looking to get into racing action their plans having been derailed in the UAE the Elite women’s start list in Quarteira is a top quality one You can find the full start list here – but this is certainly a great entry for a Europe Triathlon Cup race such is the way of triathlon start lists and athlete plans changing that we can’t be sure that every name mentioned will be present on race day but it certainly looks set to be well worth watching on Saturday Having celebrated her 30th birthday this past week (full details on her Instagram for that!) a return to racing will hopefully also prove a reason for celebration for the Tokyo Olympic Games Individual silver medallist and 2020 World Champion A calf tear in the middle of 2023 ended her season far too early, one in which she had seemingly found top form after a slow start with a second consecutive and dominant victory at WTCS Cagliari In Olympic qualification terms, WTCS Cagliari is the primary target for the Brits, but starting off with a high quality, Olympic distance race will certainly provide an early insight into how GTB’s return to fitness is progressing The defending Quarteira champion and wearing bib #1, there will be even more eyes on Cassandre Beaugrand at every step this year The prospect of Olympic success on home turf in Paris year guarantees that Test Event silver and Pontevedra bronze means that Olympic selection is already secure, while an early season 5km race suggests her run form is coming along nicely we rarely see her anywhere other than at or near the front of any swim How will a winter preparing in Loughborough translate to some Portuguese sun This will be our first chance to check that out While those podiums in both Paris and Pontevedra were impressive, both were still slightly hampered by issues with cramping which have at times impacted her performances over the Olympic distance Another (potential) narrative to look out for Such is the strength in depth of British Triathlon’s female squad, even those stats don’t earn you a berth alongside the pre-selected Beth Potter for Paris, and as Kate herself acknowledges, the battle for selection will be “fierce” Way back in April 2023 I spoke to Kate at Arena Games London and in that article highlighted how she consistently excelled at championship events have her primary focus on that WTCS race in Cagliari in May – but with limited opportunities to catch the selectors eye between now and the cut-off date won’t want to be making up the numbers either While objectively the Elite women in Quarteira provide the strongest field and appropriately get the bulk of the copy here the men’s race is likely to be highly competitive too A stress response in his femur followed by that soleus tear all but wiped out is 2023 season – but explain why he’s in the unusual position of 111 in the World Triathlon Rankings and wears bib #6 this weekend that those figures are not representative of his true talents The battle to join Dorian Coninx and Pierre Le Corre in Paris will be a tough one and a strong start here would certainly boost his confidence for the big races ahead Among those also heading to the Algarve at Great Britain’s Miyazaki World Cup winner multiple WTCS podium finisher and home favourite Joao Perreira and Ireland’s James Edgar who’ll carry bib #1 after four victories across Africa Asia and Americas Cup events over the last 12 months for the men I think that a large number of them will look at this start list and think they have a chance The races will be broadcast on World Triathlon’s subscription service with race start times as follows on the afternoon of Saturday 23 March 2024 the racing will also be available to watch free of charge on the Europe Triathlon YouTube channel Follow the madness of the 'Race that eats its young' on RUN247 Showing off his incredible run prowess, Great Britain’s Hugo Milner proved his end of season success in 2023 was no fluke, as the Derby native took his first win of the year at the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira Reeling in two-time world champion Vincent Luis with a lightning quick run split Milner demonstrated once again to Team GB selectors that he should most certainly be considered for the Olympic team in Paris In the women’s race, Olympic medalists Cassandre Beaugrand and Georgia Taylor-Brown were both thwarted by Lisa Tertsch of Germany Racing over the Olympic distance in Quarteira some of the best in the world overcame the disappointment of WTCS Abu Dhabi’s cancellation and dusted off the cobwebs on the Algarve Britain’s Marcus Dey was responsible for a rapid early pace 12 men including Luis were within 20 seconds of the front Milner had left himself with a substantial amount of work to do with the Harvard grad down +0:55 and sitting in around 35th place the 25-year-old had plenty of athletes around him in the chase pack the chase pack couldn’t make up enough ground on a front group of 15 athletes with Luis joined by fellow French pros Aurelien Jem Yanis Seguin and Louis Vitiella in the front pack Milner would have to clock a sub-30:00 run split to even make the podium but proved he was more than up to the task as over the course of the first 8km he reeled in Luis and Jem the Brit ended up taking a comfortable win Luis secured second in his first race since last summer with Jem coming home in third to take his first continental cup podium since 2018 Despite not quite having the finishing speed to kick for the win in Quarteira Taylor-Brown will take a massive confidence boost from pushing Paris Olympic qualifiers Tertsch and Beaugrand so close in Portugal the Brit came out of the water alongside Beaugrand biked in the front group and just lost out in a three-way sprint for the line in her first race since June 2023 As far as the race for the two remaining slots on the British Team to Paris goes her performance in Quarteira certainly makes it clear that she is not one to count out Tertsch showed over the Olympic distance that she is a match for anyone as she impressively out-split Beaugrand who having recently run a 5km road PB At the end of the day, the women’s race in particular has left triathlon fans with more questions than answers. Can Tertsch challenge for a medal in Paris? Is GTB a favourite or an underdog for a slot on the British team both those questions and many more will be answered sooner rather than later is that it’s great to see Taylor-Brown back healthy and at the front of races again Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira – Saturday March 23 20241500m / 40km / 10km This is a preview written ahead of the European Triathlon Cup Quarteira. Check out our post-race reports on the podium-topping performances of Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) and Vetle Thorn (NOR) Portugal hosts the second European Continental Cup of the year this weekend as racing heads to the Algarve for what promises to be the most hotly contested competition on European soil so far this season The likes of Jonny Brownlee, Cassandre Beaugrand and Kate Waugh will race over the Olympic distance in Quarteira as some of the best athletes in Europe come face-to-face for the first time in 2023 The 2023 Quarteira European Cup will be held on Saturday The women’s race will begin at 1345 local time (GMT+00:00) which is 1445 CET and 0645 on the West Coast which is 1730 CET and 1030 on the West Coast All the action will be available via triathlonlive.tv YouTube (embedded below) and via the ETU’s Facebook page This event has been hosted in Quarteira since 2009 and is one of the oldest European Continental Cups on the circuit Athletes will swim two laps of 750m from the Quarteira beach before heading out for six laps of the 6.66km bike course which includes three dead turns (180 degree turn) per lap the run consists of four 2.5km loops which follow the promenade and also include three dead turns Last year, Takumi Hojo (JPN) and Beth Potter (GBR) took the wins here in Quarteira as both eventual victors successfully ran away from the rest of the field on the Algarve In the women’s race, French star Cassandre Beaugrand starts with #1 and will be the firm favourite for the win. Beaugrand, now based in Loughborough, most recently finished sixth at WTCS Abu Dhabi and looks to be in great run form at the moment who has been widely tipped as the athlete who can deliver a home medal at the Paris Olympic Games will race her first Olympic distance event of the season in Quarteira Beaugrand will be hoping to build on last season’s successes Next up, World U23 Champion Kate Waugh will feel as if she’s racing on home turf after being based in the Algarve over the winter After 32nd at WTCS Abu Dhabi at the beginning of March Waugh will likely relish the chance to race over the Olympic distance which is the format she won her world title over in November alongside training partners Yuko Takahashi will make up just four of the athletes that form part of a training squad based down the road in Monte Gordo who train under the guidance of Paulo Sousa expect this quartet to feature at the front end of the race Finally, Swedish athlete Tilda Månsson, who won the Junior World Championships in 2022, could be a dark horse for the win. Mansson, who rose to prominence following her sprint finish win at the 2022 Bergen World Cup will hope to continue to build on a 2022 that also included her WTCS debut The full women’s start list can be found here With over 70 names on the start list, it is safe to assume that the men’s race in Quarteira will deliver in both quantity and quality. Jonny Brownlee who will be bringing a large proportion of the quality will look to kick his 2023 season off with a win against a strong field in Quarteira after opting to skip WTCS Abu Dhabi at the start of the month who proved many doubters wrong with a World Cup win a WTCS podium and a Super League Championship Series third place finish in 2023 providing all things have gone well in training this winter Another name recently announced on the start list for the London Arena Games racing is Gustav Iden who didn’t get his season off to the best start with a poor performance at WTCS Abu Dhabi will hope to let his legs do the talking in Portugal after shoe controversy shrouded the start to his campaign The chance to move up the world rankings in Quarteira who is only on the cusp of WTCS start lists currently is likely to benefit a great deal from a podium placing in Portugal It is a podium he will have to work hard for however, with the likes of recent Sursee Arena Games podium finisher Simon Westermann WTCS medallist Paul Georgenthum and Portuguese veteran Joao Pereira all likely to be in contention Vetle Thorn, Iden’s fellow countryman, is another name to look out for, as the 23 year old continues to go from strength-to-strength after a breakthrough 2022 which saw him clinch third place in front of a home crowd at the Bergen World Cup who last year finished on the podium at the World U23 Championships could be the next best British contender for the podium The Loughborough student’s best finish at a European Cup is sixth but given the strength he showed over the Olympic distance in Abu Dhabi last November may be able to eclipse that in Portugal on Saturday The full men’s start list can be found here Great Britain’s Beth Potter kicked off 2022 in winning style today at the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira in Portugal After exiting with the leaders through what wasn’t the easiest of swims in control on the bike and then running clear over the final stages of the 10km run the Commonwealth Games-bound athlete delivered exactly what we expected She will have far tougher challenges later in the season but this will represent a very welcome start to her year Her winter training has seemingly gone very well There was some significant chop in the water today at Quarteira Beach as the Elite Women kicked off with a wetsuit-legal, two-lap, 1.5km swim to start the first (outdoor!) race of the Europe Triathlon Cup season Great Britain’s Sophie Alden, who ended her 2021 season fourth in Barcelona, led the field through the majority of the challenging swim conditions, which potentially could have a greater impact on the race than we’d given credit for in our pre-race preview while a far from optimal transition from Rappaport was not helping her prospects As they settled into the 40km ride (six laps) the leading group of seven athletes were soon caught which saw key names such as Lisa Tertsch (GER) Anabel Knoll (GER) and a Portuguese trio of Melanie Santos Maria Tome and Helena Carvalho swell the leading pack to around 12/13 That was the race gone – nobody else would see them again Potter was looking great in her season debut and This is the sort of field that she should dominate if she’s going to make the jump in 2022 from WTCS top-10’s to podium contender – and she was doing exactly that but certainly not a surprise if you have closely followed her progress in recent years The rest of the bike had a strong case of ‘uneventful’ about it. Knoll, Alden, Potter and Sarah-Jane Walker (RSA) were consistently to the fore signs of any ‘break’ gaining anything more than a handful of seconds The pace was solid – De Koning holding on at the back of the group evidence of that – but this was only heading one way Potter eased into her running over the opening kilometre, moved towards the head of the race, passed U23 World Champion (from Quarteira) Emma Lombardi… and then it was a case of how long would the French athlete be able to hang on to the fast feet of the Rio 2016 Olympic 10,000m runner clocking 33:11 over 10km on the roads earlier this month to win in Cannes and she would prove to be a worthy adversary There would be no 10km lap of honour jog today Potter continued to set the pace, but Lombardi was just a stride behind and showing no signs of yielding to the more experienced Brit. Showing no fear, she was also content to lead too and tried to exert some pressure on Potter around the 5km mark This was turning into a top quality head-to-head battle When Potter made a move, she made it strongly, significantly increasing the pace in the closing stages and the French athlete couldn’t respond. A gap of 30-metres was gained quickly and that would prove game over. Potter would run to victory and extend her winning margin but will likely also be pleased that she was kept very honest for around 8km too A perfect day really to start a busy season Germany’s Lisa Tertsch looked pretty much out on her feet in the finish straight Saturday 26th March 2022 – ELITE WOMEN1.5km / 40km / 10km International governing body World Triathlon has decided to reschedule the 2021 World Triathlon Junior Championships to Quarteira, Portugal, on November 6-7. The event was originally planned to take place in Bermuda during the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Quarteira has previously hosted Europe Triathlon Junior Cup events the World Triathlon Junior Championships will take place along with a Europe Triathlon Cup “We really want to thank the Portuguese National Federation the local organising committee and Europe Triathlon for their willingness to step up and add the Junior World Championships to the programme of Quarteira,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member “With the Juniors already having missed their World Championships last year due to the pandemic it was very important for us to give them the opportunity to compete this year so that the athletes will have at least one chance of competing at the highest level before moving out of this age group www.triathlon.org Cassandre Beaugrand of France led from start-to-finish in the women’s elite race in Quarteira comfortably winning by close to a minute after controlling the race from the front throughout [CLICK HERE for the Elite Men’s report] Over the two-lap, 1500m sea swim, French superstar Beaugrand showed her prowess in the water as she efficiently navigated the slightly choppy conditions to come out of the water with a small lead was alongside the Frenchwoman for much of the 1500m swim but Beaugrand was quickest to cover the long run from the beach to transition In the chase pack, reigning World U23 Champion Kate Waugh made the group along with Seregni and roughly ten other women home favourite Melanie Santos and Spaniard Cecilia Santamaria Surroca Whilst Beaugrand enjoyed a small lead over the opening kilometres she was quickly reeled in by the chase group as the lead pack swelled to a group of eleven Santos and Santamaria was Japan’s Yuko Takahashi French duo Mathilde Gautier and Audrey Merle Italian Luisa Iogna-Prat and Australia’s Jaz Greaves Swiss athlete Alissa Konig and Portugal’s Helena Carvahalo were taking on the lions share of the work for the chase pack initially made very little inroads into the front groups lead with the gap at 1:20 following the first lap the leading group of 11 came into T2 with a comfortable lead as the medals looked to come from this group started the run with a deficit of over two minutes to the top-10 who as the best runner in the field by some way looked capable of winning the race anyway she wanted to as they set out on the 10km run who had been at the front of the race since the gun went quickly built a comfortable lead on the rest of the field and by the 2.5km mark looked unbeatable bar disaster Lehair of Luxembourg looked to have the freshest legs out of the rest of the front group as she valiantly chased Beaugrand and in the process put time into the rest of the podium contenders over the first 5km her compatriot Merle closed the gap to Lehair and worked hard to secure second place and leave the Luxembourger in her wake as Merle made it a French 1-2 on the Algarve and Lehair was rewarded for her doggedness with a great third place finish Saturday 25th March 2022 – ELITE WOMEN1.5km / 40km / 10km This is a preview for the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira – you can read full reports on how the racing played out where Beth Potter dominated the Elite Women, while Takumi Hojo was the men’s champion With IRONMAN and Challenge Family racing on hold this coming weekend, ahead of a blockbuster start to April and the start of racing still eight weeks away in the World Triathlon Series we’ve got an opportunity to pay closer attention to some short-course racing in Portugal on Saturday the Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira is effectively part of the third-tier of international draft-legal racing behind WTCS at the pinnacle and the World Triathlon Cup below that Despite that – and with the Arena Games Triathlon Series Munich just two weeks later – there’s more than enough interest in this one to warrant a full preview The races takes place on Saturday 26th March meaning that the race start times are as follows: Race results should appear relatively quickly after the race on the World Triathlon website Racing will be over the Olympic (1.5km / 40km / 10km) format we have reason to believe that there may actually be some live streaming coverage for the event As soon as we have that confirmed (or not) we will of course update the cancellation of the 2021 World Triathlon Bermuda, Quarteira stepped in to host the 2021 World Junior Triathlon Championships where Igor Bellido Mikhailova (ESP) and Julie Behrens (GER) took the titles but silver medallist Joao Nuno Batista (POR) will be flying the flag for Portugal With recent winners including Laura Lindemann (GER) in 2019, Dorian Coninx (FRA) in 2018, Sophie Coldwell (GBR) in 2017 and Jess Learmonth (GBR) in 2016 there’s a history of top quality athletes winning in the Algarve Race #1 in Portugal will be the current WTCS Rankings leader, Summer Rappaport (USA). 14th in Tokyo Olympic Games, she earned 2021 WTCS podiums in Yokohama (second) and Hamburg (third) Rappaport is one of the best swimmers in the sport (and will have the likes of Bianca Seregni (ITA) for company) but without the depth of field of a WTCS event it’s difficult to see the opening discipline determining the outcome of the race in my view I make bib #2 the favourite to finish in position #1… will also have been a further fast-track of her triathlon education I can only see her making another step forward in 2022 – and likely starting that with a win here You can click here for the full start list This will be another step up for the 19 year old Brit who may feel he has a score to settle with this course… having crashed out at the World Junior Champs It will also be his first Olympic Distance start stacked field and an opportunity to take on some of the very best So far the season has got off to a great start and I’m taking that confidence and experience into this weekend “The body is in good shape and I’m excited to see what I can do in Quarteira especially with the longer distance and better competition I want to be fighting at the very front and battling it out for the top position” There is a strong British entry, with Sam Dickinson, Harry Leleu (recently fourth indoors in Lievin) Cameron Main and Connor Bentley all racing Tom Bishop is in relaxed mood after spending much of the past two years chasing Olympic qualifying points: “This is the first race in years that I’m going in with no pressure It will be a good chance to see where I’m at and what I need to work on looking forward to the rest of the season.” You can’t go too far in triathlon these days without mentioning Norway, who will be led by Casper Stornes. He was third in Quarteira in 2018 and a month later topped that memorable clean-sweep at WTS Bermuda You can typically rely on Mark Devay (HUN) to ensure that the swim pace is on from the first stroke, and there are a host of proven contenders lining up, including Seth Rider (USA) who was fourth at the Grand Final Raphael Montoya (FRA) and Portugal’s own Joao Perreira with little form to go on and – to my eyes at least – no clear favourite good luck if you can pick the winner from this one in advance You can find the full start list for the Elite Men here There is a total of EUR 12,500 on offer this weekend Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page.
