that’s where my horizons expanded,” he said “I began to love the sea in a different way.” While he was a fisherman his first instinct was to hunt and fish and gave him the incredible opportunity to see the world and meet new people from breaking stone to working on concrete fishing…doing whatever was necessary,” he said “I prepared things for scientists to do their research I worked on a lot of projects and met a lot of people around the world who were pioneers in satellite telemetry and many other things Earning the nickname ‘sea-wolf,’ Serpa participated in a wide spectrum of scientific expeditions around the world algae… everything researchers were studying,” he said manta rays in Cape Verde andhammer sharks in the Galapagos Islands.” Serpa said he is forever grateful for the opportunities that job afforded him “I have an almost eternal debt to that institution,” he said Wanting to share his vast knowledge about marine life and offer unforgettable experiences above and below the sea to others in 1996 Serpa founded ‘Diver Norberto’ in Faial Although he left the university post about a decade ago he remained an active collaborator in several studies in the field of Marine Biology Serpa said life’s circumstances got in the way and prevented him from fulfilling his life dream sooner but he finally reached a point in his life where he could successfully juggle both worlds - life on land and at sea but I am also able to live part of my life far away Part of living here and there isn’t always easy I often say I spend my life filled with saudades (longing for something or someone absent) I miss my boat and this life of meeting new people and doing different things.” Serpa said this voyage has been very transformative offering him a unique perspective on life and the world but the most important thing about this trip for me was meeting new people and all the friends I made along the way,” he said he opted to share the experience with others “I’m not a solitary person; I am always inviting people to join me,” he revealed “I only sailed alone from Bali to Malaysia.” He has shared his adventure with relatives Some well-known individuals have sailed with him including former diplomat and member of the European Parliament Ana Gomes; Ambassador Manuela Bairos who was Consul General of Portugal in Boston from 2004 to 2009; and Ricardo Santos former principal researcher at the University of the Azores and former minister of Maritime Affairs I won’t be talking about how the French Polynesia and the Vanuatu volcanoes are very beautiful I am going to talk about all the wonderful experiences and interactions I had with all the people,” Serpa stressed He recalled how his engine failed in Indonesia and had to sail into a headwind for three days before reaching a fishermen’s bay “I stayed there 10 days while the boat was being repaired,” he said Some of them later flew to Thailand to join me I feel like I am also leaving my mark wherever I go.” There have been some scary occurrences along the way such as the time he almost lost his mast near the Cape of Storms and had to replace the sailboat’s rigging in South Africa but he said those are outweighed by the bonds he has made and special moments like the time when about 200 false killer whales came right up to his sailboat in Indonesia or when he went diving with white sharks in Mossel Bay ‘Azorean islands are amongst the cleanest in the world,’ Serpa saidSerpa said the more he travels the world the more he appreciates his native Azores and its marine preservation efforts “After passing through all these islands and all the areas I’ve seen I believe our islands are among the cleanest in the world “I would like to congratulate all those people who fought to make this happen I’ve been to islands near very sophisticated and highly developed countries and it broke my heart to see the garbage there I saw little awareness and respect there for the environment.” There were times when he acted as a true ambassador of the Azores during this journey “I love the Azores; our islands are beautiful,” he said I spoke to them about marine life and the environment and I talked about the Azores and promoted it What’s next for Norberto Serpa?Serpa admitted he is already dreaming of other voyages at least not while I have the energy,” he said “I already have plans for Brazil and Uruguay next winter.” He’s also pondering having an exhibition at the Azorean Legislative Assembly about his circumnavigation voyage and perhaps working with someone to write a book about his experience Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application and their children in 1969 and they settled in Stoughton Although it was a difficult decision to leave their native country they hoped to provide their family with a better future and more opportunities Amelia and Antonio worked diligently to save for a home to raise their family in their new country they realized their dream and purchased a home in Stoughton Amelia used her "old country" skills to economize and provide for her family In the early years she made most of her children's clothes with donated materials She made jams from the fruit trees in her yard and maintained a garden to provide fresh produce for the family She quickly learned she could get bonuses for shopping with S&H Greenstamps... U.S scientific community a platform to protect climate research under attack researchers at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management launched the Sustainability Academic Network – SUSANHub.com – a database that centralizes climate research and data “We initially created this platform to connect researchers and professionals in sustainable development and climate change,” said Juan Serpa a professor at the Desautels Faculty of Management describing the platform as a kind of “LinkedIn” for the field But at a time when the administration of United States President Donald Trump is firing climate researchers banning certain words from scientific articles cutting funding for environmental research threatening to withdraw financial support from universities and deleting scientific reports from government websites the McGill platform has taken on a different significance “The goal is to protect scientific data against threats from the U.S The platform has been logging 39,000 weekly visits from academics and researchers Scientific data that is on the chopping block south of the border is downloaded and uploaded to the platform protecting forests from insects and diseases the impact of climate change on agriculture ocean plastic pollution and the industries that emit the most greenhouse gases are just a few examples of data that can be accessed on SUSANHub.com and that would otherwise be at risk of being lost The thousands of data sets his team has saved are freely accessible and categorized according to 65 themes related to sustainable development The platform also provides access to a directory of 60,000 researchers and 25,000 research institutes adding he is very worried for colleagues in the United States “I feel compassion and empathy for all these researchers,” he said Serpa fears he will no longer be able to travel to the United States because of his involvement in the SUSANHub.com platform federal agencies have removed information on climate change from more than 200 government websites according to the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative a network that seeks to save scientific research The Trump administration also laid off thousands of employees at the U.S Forest Service and hundreds of workers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the Trump administration fired hundreds of researchers working on the Sixth National Climate Assessment a major report on climate change published every five years funding cuts and what many researchers describe as censorship have given rise to the “Stand Up for Science” movement in the United States Trump’s revolt against science is also galvanizing initiatives that would have been considered improbable just a few years ago former president-turned-parliamentarian François Hollande introduced a bill on April 14 to create a “scientific refugee” status to make it easier for France to welcome scientists threatened by the American One of the most contentious local election races is for District 2 Supervisor in Santa Cruz County where longtime incumbent Zach Friend opted against seeking a fourth term Running to replace him are Capitola Mayor Kristen Brown and Kimberly De Serpa a Pajaro Valley Unified School District board member Reporter Jesse Kathan of Santa Cruz Local who has interviewed both candidates and surveyed voters in the district spoke with KAZU's Scott Cohn about the race This interview has been edited for clarity Scott Cohn:  Tell me a little bit about the district and what some of the issues are at stake.  Jesse Kathan: District 2 spans a pretty wide area It comes up to Capitola and then it's going across Aptos Rio Del Mar and then into the northern portion of Watsonville And we did some surveys and interviews about what are the important issues for people in this election And we heard that people want affordable housing They want to know how people are going to help make rents more affordable for people They want to know how we're going to have more alternative transportation for bike paths and sidewalks And they wanted to know what supervisors are going to do to address homelessness So I think that's at the top of a lot of people's minds both of whom have some relevant experience JK: Kristen Brown is the Mayor of Capitola and she has sat on city council since 2016 she's also sat on a number of advisory boards that affect various issues around the county And she's sat on the Regional Transportation Commission which sets policy on things like spending money for alternative transportation and for the rail trail Kim De Serpa is a longtime (board) member of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District She also is a social worker that works in a nearby hospital I asked both of these candidates what they see as the major differences between them she has all this policy work that De Serpa may not have getting really deep into the housing issues the homelessness issues in a really deep sense I know how policy affects people in the real world helping connect people to health care and to affordable housing I have firsthand experience with power outages and home insurance and all of these issues that affect rural residents in this district they believe that she will promote the building of more housing And Kim De Serpa has been endorsed by a couple of former mayors of Capitola Gayle Ortiz and former supervisor John Leopold SC: This district was represented for a long time by Zach Friend Do either of these candidates align more with Friend or differ in any way?  JK: Zach Friend has not endorsed either of these candidates What I will say is that a major flash point for a lot of people is around the Santa Cruz branch rail line the county is pursuing a train or passenger rail along that line has had to recuse himself from all votes related to that line His successor will not have to recuse herself So that would be a big change to the dynamic of the board of supervisors SC: And their views on that particular issue a big flash point in the county and in this district in particular she did not say she was against the rail altogether but she said she had major concerns about the viability of the project in terms of the spending on it the environmental impacts and whether people would actually use a train earlier in her tenure on the Capitola City Council she's become a full-fledged supporter of it in which the county resoundingly voted down a measure that would have essentially signaled the county's opposition to a rail line And that has major significance for District 2 would have to be replaced in order to support a train And people have a big attachment to that trestle and many of them don't want to see that replaced SC: Suffice it to say that there are a lot of pivotal issues on the County Board’s plate the Board of Supervisors really has such a big role in where the county is going they are the body that’s directing where all this state funding is going They are responsible for all the road repair especially in the rural parts of the county I think whoever is in this seat is going to have a huge hand in what that district looks like over the coming years Read Santa Cruz Local's complete profile of the District 2 race here Correction: A previous version of this article misstated Kimberly De Serpa's position on affordable housing De Serpa told KAZU that while she believes there are adequate protections for tenants already in place she supports California Proposition 33 on the November ballot which would allow local governments to enact rent control measures Sara Serpa: Encounters & Collisions (Biophilia Records) | Sun Ra: Lights On A Satellite: Live At The Left Bank (Resonance Records HCD-2074) | Savina Yannatou Ramon Lopez: Kouarteto (Maya Recordings MCD 2402) Sara Serpa is a singer of a different order who loosely embodies a strand of “the tradition” in which the taking of risks is not only welcome but in some measure expected This album is the most autobiographical she’s ever produced and the relating of her experiences of arriving in the USA from her native Portugal puts flesh on the bones of a story among many migratory stories Indeed stories as in what might be called spoken word interludes are integral to this set and in terms of track numbers make up exactly half of it While they undoubtedly serve the interest of the bigger picture they are arguably surplus to the requirements of this review pianist Angelica Sanchez and cellist Erik Friedlander together with Serpa’s sung lyrics and wordless excursions conjure up a form of chamber music that’s arguably as distant from the customary understandings of what that means as it is from any album of the much recorded standards On Language the mood is one of a form of intimacy that falls a little outside the norms Sanchez’s solo is understated and all the better for it while it’s clear that all four participants are firm believers in the idea that less is more a title such as Between Worlds is pretty obvious the mood is one of intimacy that falls a little outside of the widely understood norms not least in a duo passage with Serpa in which both voice and cello work for the common goal of leaving a lasting impression I suspect (even in February and even though I sincerely hope to be proved wrong) that this might well turn out to be one of the less predictable new vocal releases of the year Certainly the overall subject matter falls outside of the established orders sometimes highly transitory labels of his own generation the idea of a previously unreleased set of Sun Ra music might be a little incongruous captured in better fidelity than some of those releases referred to above as it was at the Left Bank Jazz Society in Baltimore on 23 July 1978 There’s historical depth sufficient to take in a quick run through of Horace Henderson’s Big John’s Special and Arthur Johnston and Sam Coslow’s Cocktails For Two which in a duo consisting of Ra on piano and Marshall Allen on alto sax gets treated with a measure of irreverence falling short of Spike Jones’s Lights On A Satellite itself finds that other stalwart of Ra aggregations The band coalesce around him in a manner indicative of the amount of rehearsal time this incarnation of Ra’s band put in Danny Ray Thompson’s baritone sax gives some heft to We Travel The Spaceways an effect which is (positively) offset by Ra utilizing a keyboard instrument the sound of which falls outside the customary reference points – organ even clavinet – although at a push it might be one of the latter unusually obese booklet includes essays from the likes of Allen Gary Bartz and John Fowler of the Left Bank Jazz Society Would that all releases came with such diligence and attention to detail The reading serves amongst other things to remind us (as if we needed it) that not only have the moments in time when such ensembles walked this earth passed allowing of course for the fact that the centurion Marshall Allen is still at the helm of a version of this one but also that their approach to jazz and the making of it has largely been eclipsed (not entirely positively) by academic application Of the four names making up this group bass player Guy has the deepest pedigree but such is the nature of the free play to be found here that this doesn’t count for much are more than capable of functioning in an environment in which little or nothing is predetermined and the resulting music offers ample reward for those who wish to meet its demands On pieces such as Ydra 3 vocalist Yannatou gets as close to “leading” proceedings as anyone although the overall impression is of a profoundly democratic quartet intent on dispersing the focus of attention four ways as Yannatou and Floridis on bass clarinet do on Ydra 8 the dialogue is never dominated by one or the other and the music flows in a manner defiant of convention while acutely aware of the passing moments in a way that arguably might escape musicians playing in a mode of improvised music closer to the contemporary jazz mainstream With that loosely in mind Ydra 6 (Greek Lullaby) coalesces around a traditional lullaby sung by Yannatou in the midst of a musical environment quite at odds with notions of any tradition stretching back before Does the result qualify as “world music” I’ll leave that question for anyone who wants to bother with it Suffice to say that the degree to which this piece – along with both Ydra 11 (Hebrew/Greek) and Ydra 13 (Albanian) both of which also crossover into titular realms – marks no significant shift in the overall programme is telling in itself The relatively animated Ydra 12 finds the volume going up and the music consequently relatively lacking in nuance not even in this instance is rhetoric empty or otherwise emblematic of proceedings © Unless otherwise indicated, all content copyright Jazz Journal 1948-2025. Serpa Pinto, the ship that carried thousands of Jewish refugees across the Atlantic and out of Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. Among its most noted passengers were the Rebbe, and his wife, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka. Having escaped Paris days before it was occupied by German troops, the Rebbe and Rebbetzin spent much of 1941 on the run—from Paris to Vichy, then on to Nice and Marseille. They boarded the Serpa Pinto on June 12, 1941, arriving in New York 11 days later. The commemoration ceremony at the Port of Lisbon’s Rocha da Conde de Óbidos—where the ship docked throughout its service of lifesaving work—was led by Rabbi Eli Rosenfeld, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Portugal, who was joined by the mayor of Lisbon, Dr. Carlos Moedas; the chairman of the Port of Lisbon, Dr. Carlos Correia; the Israeli ambassador to Portugal, Oren Rozenblat; among other dignitaries, as well as the Jewish community of Lisbon. “It was a very moving ceremony, where the pride Lisbon has in its consistent and historical support for the Jewish people was on full display,” Rosenfeld told Chabad.org. “The people of this city are tremendously proud of the role they played in saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust, and particularly those of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin.” A hand-painted ceramic mosaic in the traditional azulejo style depicts the Serpa Pinto. It is mounted on a building adjacent to the refugees’ embarkation point, and sits alongside a painted path of footsteps representing those that walked this road towards freedom. Underneath the mosaic, the plaque reads: The ship Serpa Pinto transported tens of thousands of passengers across the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, more than any other civilian ship on record. By bringing its passengers to safe havens, it helped save countless lives from the horrors of the Holocaust, which earned it the nickname of “Friendship.” The Serpa Pinto’s passenger lists include the Rebbe and Rebbetzin, who, from this very location, departed Lisbon aboard this ship on June 12, 1941. This plaque recognizes the profound worldwide contributions and impact of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, made possible by his escape from the flames of Europe through Lisbon aboard the Serpa Pinto. In the entry, the Rebbe confronts the paradoxical possibility of evil in the presence of G‑d. The root of such a barbaric spiritual illness, he writes, lies in human forgetfulness. He uses an enigmatic Talmudic passage stating that Moshiach will not come until “a fish is sought for an invalid and cannot be found” (Sanhedrin 98a) as a frame through which to view the events of the time. “Fish are a metaphor for the knowledge that we are ever submerged in the presence of G‑d,” Chabad.org’s Rabbi Eli Rubin explains in a 2013 article. “Just as a fish cannot live out of water, so the spiritual health of humanity can be preserved only if we are consciously aware of G‑d’s all-encompassing presence. It is at a moment that G‑d’s presence is utterly hidden—when no fish can be found for the invalid—that the redemption must arrive.” Deeply moved by the experience, Moedas introduced Rosenfeld to the chairman of the port, and they began working on a tribute to immortalize the Rebbe’s flight from Europe. The process took a couple of years and once all was ready, Rosenfeld, in conjunction with the Port, chose 20 Cheshvan, the birthday of the Fifth Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer Schneersohn, as an auspicious time for the unveiling. Carlos Esasguy Coimbra, whose father served as a doctor on board the Serpa Pinto, read the dedication in Portuguese, while Raizel Rosenfeld, who directs Chabad of Lisbon alongside her husband, translated it into English. Lisbon Rabbi Reuben Suiza spoke of the Rebbe’s work and noted that Lisbon’s port had helped facilitate it, changing the trajectory of Jewish history and impacting the world forever.
