The new play runs at WP Theater in a co-production with Colt Coeur Dan Rubins Sami Monroe (Nimene Sierra Wureh) is a wünderkind theatermaker who does it all She’s a Ghanaian American “director slash playwright slash dramaturg slash intimacy coordinator,” as she announces whenever she has a chance after a big early success—apparently she’s won a Tony for directing a revival of Lynn Nottage’s Ruined—she’s been invited to represent the art form at Diaspora Now! Like Sami, the contemplative but overstuffed minor•ity tries to do it all, too. Playwright francisca da silveira’s minor•ity a co-production of WP Theater and Colt Coeur tackles a litany of topics seldom studied onstage: the demeaning demands of a majority-white consortium of arts funders on African diasporic artists; which artists get to tell which stories across global Black communities; and the cultural and generational clashes between Gen-Z Americans and everybody else Minor•ity frames the play as a storyteller’s fable lack a plot sturdy enough for them to flourish director Shariffa Ali’s smoothly staged production is anchored by a commanding performance from Nedra Marie Taylor as Céza a Cape Verdean painter whose work relentlessly reimagines the volcano in the town where she grew up Céza is struggling to overcome years of artistic block That dry spell coincides more or less with the dissolution of her relationship with Cheikh (Ato Essandoh) a Senegalese-British storyteller who’s back on the conference circuit to raise money for an afterschool program he wants to launch back home and Sami are appearing on a panel together while Céza battles backstage to finish a blank canvas to appease her funders Taylor’s Céza is impeccably poised and a bit austere homesick rage beneath her impossibly cool surface too: when she furiously spits red wine onto the white canvas Taylor is equally compelling at conveying Céza’s early suave assuredness and her splintering facade; she also makes comic drunkenness delightful It takes the perceptive Céza no time at all to read Sami’s national background like a book: “Americans are always the ones with identity issues.” Sami overcome in equal part by self-importance and self-doubt constantly calls out Céza and Cheikh in somewhat condescending terms they don’t even understand: “I hope you’re not trying to gatekeep ancestors,” she tells Cheikh when he questions whether her theater work runs as deep as his storytelling in her outsiderness both to this global artmaking world and to this intimate relationship And because she’s constantly annoying Céza and Cheikh interrupting their reunion and insinuating herself into their personal and professional business She’s just too much of a caricature and too clueless an observer of her co-panelists’ reactions to persuade us that da silveira really respects Sami as an equal-footed participant in the play It’s only in a potent monologue about a Juilliard audition in which Sami imagines her white adjudicators as “grotesque salivating monsters trying to convince a young Black girl to choose their institution and she’s just slurping the drool dripping out of their mouths,” that the character snaps into focus since the play needs to maneuver the characters into place again and again in order to keep the conversation flowing minor•ity’s plot frequently feels contrived Technical delays force the trio to spend more time together while they wait Céza’s giant canvas shows up in the green room instead of in her designated studio space so—rather than requesting to have it moved to facilitate her tortured private process—she’s constantly working in a spot where Sami and Cheikh will keep encountering her even though the whole play has a storytelling frame in which the typical rules of verisimilitude may not apply the obvious false note of a green room that only three panelists at a global conference ever enter starts to get distracting: where’s everybody else These complaints may be plot-point quibbles but minor•ity can’t afford to have its audience distracted when da silveira has so many important things to say At least whenever Taylor’s Céza has the mic minor•ity’s politics and polemics feel as thoughtfully thorny as they ought to The musical opens at the Imperial Theatre on April 10 Get the best deals and latest updates on theater and shows by signing up for TheaterMania's newsletter today This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page had been working on cars with his dad his whole life was because of his dad," Fernando's mother Pamela Pereira said in a written statement to The Enterprise on Saturday Pereira's son, 20-year-old Fernando Da Silveira Jr., of Brockton, was killed in a car crash on North Cary Street late Wednesday night Pereira said her son was talented and hard-working he built from scratch with his dad," who is also named Fernando Da Silveira "From the seats to the motor and the inside and outside Pereira said her son was in "his prime moment," working on opening up his own shop "He wrapped half of Brockton cars," she said Tragic crash Two men killed after car hits tree on North Cary Street in Brockton. That pain and grief just keeps cycling through the things you don't have because of her death." been reported countless times across the country The Virginia Department of Health reported almost 2,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses in the commonwealth in 2023 That makes up almost 80 percent of all overdose deaths in Virginia Silveira quickly learned she and her family were not alone in their grief "We have been finding that many families that lose someone to fentanyl wasn't investigated The ones that were investigated did not end up with significant charges the person that sold to my niece had caused someone else's death just a few months before and then a year later caused another person's death that we know of," Silveira said During this year's Virginia General Assembly session Silveira has driven a two-hour-plus journey from Harrisonburg to testify in favor of bills cracking down on fentanyl One of those bills, House Bill 2657 would allow prosecutors to file an involuntary manslaughter charge against a drug dealer who sells fentanyl leading to an overdose death Virginia Del. Josh Thomas (D-Prince William) authored the bill after learning the challenges prosecutors and law enforcement faced when dealing with cases similar to what happened with Silveira's niece "The route they've been taking is to pump up the amount of distribution drug charges They would say possession with intent to distribute and try and tack on as much sentencing as they can there a crisp way to get the manslaughter charge to stick," Thomas said they could still eventually get that result but they have to get through a couple of extra steps to prove it What this would do is just immediately codify it into the legal code as its own separate charge That kind of streamlines the process for our prosecutors with some other commonwealth's attorneys I've spoken with is that it makes the charging and sentencing they're requesting a lot more efficient." Thomas pointed to examples he heard from prosecutors trying to tack on an involuntary manslaughter charge against a dealer who sold a laced pill that killed a victim but had to settle for possession with intent to distribute charges Thomas said prosecutors would be able to do both we need a direct approach in the code to symbolize to Virginians that we take this very seriously and now fentanyl has its own charge in the code because the drug is so deadly," Thomas said and I have great respect for law enforcement I see this really terrible drug overtaking our communities in Prince William County and Northern Virginia and law enforcement needing more tools to do that job there's a similar bill being discussed in the Virginia Senate Thomas said there would be a conference process to hammer out a bill combining elements of both pieces of legislation before being sent to the governor's desk the Prince William County-based lawmaker told 7News his bill is also meant to send a message "The message is this: We are serious about protecting our communities and that starts with holding people accountable," Thomas said if you sell a drug knowingly and that fentanyl kills someone Silveira said she hopes this is a message that prevents other families from going through what she and her family have had to deal with the past four years "At least it acknowledges you caused someone's death whether it was proven you knew it could kill them or not," Silveira said After three straight PFL seasons at light heavyweight Josh Silveira is trying something new this time around Silveira (14-4) beat Mike Shipman (17-5) with a unanimous decision this past Friday in the opening round of the 2025 middleweight tournament He moved on to a semifinal matchup against Fabian Edwards in late June Silveira came up short in his 205-pound seasons but started the middleweight portion of his career off right Silveira spoke to the media following his win at 2025 PFL World Tournament 3 which took place at Universal Studios in Orlando Watch Silveira's full post-fight interview in the video above courtesy of the PFL Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Joao Silveira has passed away at the age of 69 In just a few months he was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Antiphospholipid syndrome He was in the hospital for two months and had multiple surgeries Although he was suffering you could see the fight in his eyes to push through and get better Everyday Joao was always surrounded by loved ones at the hospital even until his last breath The funeral will be a private ceremony with family and close friends Azores to the late Henrique and Maria Silveira and he came to America in 1972 He had many jobs before pursuing his passion in Carpentry Joao started his career working along side his Uncle John and then started his own company Joao was a drummer in two Portuguese bands called “The Cats” and “The Capitalistas” for a couple years Joao had a great personality and everyone around him loved his humor and you could tell that he was genuinely happy Joao will be greatly missed by all who were part of his life His memory will live on through everyone who knew him and all the building structures he built around the state His legacy will continue on through his family.  Joe Silveira and Fatima DaPonte and her husband Alvaro; his daughters Carla Moe and her husband Erling “Buzzy”; Cleide Art and her husband Jonah; stepchildren Monica Barboza and her husband Jason and Phyllip Lameiro and his wife Kristen Brooklyn and Aaliyah; as well as several nieces and nephews Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Perry Funeral Home This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors and their children in 1969 and they settled in Stoughton Although it was a difficult decision to leave their native country they hoped to provide their family with a better future and more opportunities Amelia and Antonio worked diligently to save for a home to raise their family in their new country they realized their dream and purchased a home in Stoughton Amelia used her "old country" skills to economize and provide for her family In the early years she made most of her children's clothes with donated materials She made jams from the fruit trees in her yard and maintained a garden to provide fresh produce for the family She quickly learned she could get bonuses for shopping with S&H Greenstamps... Meylemans had herself been going to ask Silveira to marry her – on exactly the same boat trip, even down to having a ring in her pocket. Nevertheless, all was right with the world, after both finally said yes, yes, yes. But how did this most unexpected of competitions happen? "I bought her a private boat tour when we went to Brazil and I had already made plans to propose then "I also bought an engagement ring in like I think February," picks up Meylemans a two-time Olympian and Belgium's first world medallist in the sport after claiming silver in 2024 13 years after joining the World Cup tour in 2011 "I sent it to a friend's house; she sent it to her mum's but then the ring didn't arrive on time then I was like okay Brazil's perfect I have that boat trip that she got me so perfect "I was like come on," laughed Meylemans. "I literally had it on the boat ready to go." "I won that competition," smiled Silveira. "She beat me to it definitely," agreed Meylemans, before Silveira added, while both showed their ring fingers to the cameras: "Ended up being the same ring too, which is a coincidence." The pair have teamed up to train together but then also have to manage the emotions that come with competing against each other "I think it's easier than having someone at home than you miss all the time," said Silveira of the 24-7 nature of their job and relationship "So at least we get to do everything together But they also confirm that "competing is hard sometimes" Silveira had a tough year on new equipment and learning her sled had a cracking period with a first-ever World Cup win "It was quite the contrast," said Silveira "and I think it helped me learn how to deal with that situation a little bit better." He believed that he had a “female brain”—the still-prevalent but scientifically flawed notion that transgender-identifying individuals’ brains resemble those of the opposite sex Kendra and Ginger recalled that transgender issues quickly became an all-consuming fixation for Yarden Within months of announcing his transgender identity Yarden began making plans to seek medical assistance By 16, Yarden had socially transitioned. He began using the name Emily, adopted female pronouns, grew out his hair, and wore feminine attire. It was 2014—the year of the “transgender tipping point.” Public awareness of trans issues was surging, and the number of children identifying as transgender spiked His mother noticed that he frequently changed his name with monikers often tied to fleeting fixations or short-lived friendships cycling through intense interests—social justice He also began seeing a Fresno-based gender-affirming therapist, Carol Montgomery Brosnac. Yarden later claimed that Brosnac and other health professionals had encouraged his transition and fostered unrealistic expectations “My doctors and therapists said it was possible to change genders and even recommended that I transition,” he wrote At 18, Yarden was preparing for the next step in his transition: a penile-inversion vaginoplasty, in which an otherwise healthy penis is surgically dissected, with its tissue rearranged to construct a facsimile of a vagina. He underwent the procedure shortly after his nineteenth birthday, in early 2017, at Align Surgical Associates in San Francisco The surgery marked the beginning of a downward spiral. Soon afterward, he was back in the hospital with severe complications, including excessive blood loss that required a transfusion. According to medical records Yarden developed necrosis of the “vaginal” tissue he was hospitalized repeatedly to undergo corrective surgeries in which sections of tissue from his abdomen were transplanted to replace the lost tissue In May 2019, Yarden underwent what he hoped would be a final revision vaginoplasty, this time performed by surgeon Maurice Garcia at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles The procedure utilized a segment of Yarden’s colon in an attempt to replace tissue lost in previous surgeries Garcia wrote that Yarden showed a “lack of insight” about the “irreversible” nature of closing the surgically created canal and appeared to have “unreasonable expectations.” “then I wouldn’t have wasted so many years of my life for nothing.” Both doctors filed restraining orders against him Using a Birthright trip to Israel as an opportunity, Yarden took his return ticket to New York, where he spent six months homeless before securing a spot in a Brooklyn supportive-housing program adopting the name Yarden Matityahu Silveira—Yarden being the Hebrew equivalent of his birth name By 2021, he had joined the Detransitioner community on Reddit using the name “Mindless-Mistake-176.” The forum was then a small community one of the few spaces where detransitioners could share their experiences Through his posts, a clearer picture of Yarden’s circumstances emerged. Struggling with chronic pain from his surgeries, he attended weekly therapy and regularly used cannabis to cope. He chronicled ongoing suffering, a sense of betrayal, and futile attempts to find medical help, detailing one doctor after another who refused to assist him Djordjevic’s office warned Yarden to stop contacting them or face police intervention Yarden seemed to recognize that his autism may have influenced his decision to transition. “Maybe if I didn’t have autism, maybe if my brain wasn’t so defective, I would have caught on before it was too late,” he wrote In 2016, Yarden claimed that he had been sexually assaulted by a man and was deeply distressed when some peers didn’t believe him. Autistic individuals are at higher risk of sexual assault often because of their difficulty reading social cues On May 20, 2021, Yarden died in New York. The medical examiner listed “unknown circumstances” on his death certificate. According to Kendra, no autopsy was performed because some Jewish traditions discourage it Nonetheless, Yarden’s mother believes that he ended his own life. He had been open about suicidal thoughts. She also acknowledges that complications from his surgical issues might have played a role. Yarden described his worsening condition in graphic detail—a significant blockage caused by scar tissue and an exposed colon his physical and mental suffering were inextricably bound together He was laid to rest at Mount Richmond Cemetery on Staten Island a burial ground managed by the Hebrew Free Burial Association which provides Jewish burials for those in need If we can draw any lesson from Yarden’s short and painful life it is that blind affirmation can do irreparable harm especially for autistic or otherwise vulnerable youth who cling to the hope that adopting a transgender identity The communities have agriculture, and they have residues of agriculture. If they can produce their own biogas fuel using agricultural residue, this will create a positive cycle that can scale up.” Silveira added: “I think the time is ripe for a more complex solution.“ Get Cornell news delivered right to your inbox. TRACK RADARVa passes bill upgrading charge to manslaughter for accidental fentanyl overdosesby Christian Flores (7News) — As the Virginia General Assembly's session came to a close this weekend lawmakers passed two bills allowing prosecutors to charge drug dealers with involuntary manslaughter if they sold fentanyl-laced drugs leading to death Not a day goes by when she doesn't think about what could have been for her niece "She was definitely impacting a lot of lives she would always help me out when I needed help.' She was just that friendly "There was a lot of hope for her future." Paula was a student at Bridgewater College when she died of an accidental fentanyl overdose after taking a pill that was sold to her on social media as a Percocet March marks the four-year anniversary of her family's tragedy Silveira told 7News that the passage of House Bill 2657 at least provides a glimmer of hope that other families don't have to suffer like she has The bipartisan bill adjusts the Virginia law surrounding chargeable offenses for involuntary manslaughter adding the sale of fentanyl-laced drugs that ultimately lead to death "I think it is a deterrence," Silveira said "I feel like this does send a stronger message to the dealers and the traffickers that they can get more significant time if they cause someone's death." Virginia Del. Josh Thomas authored the bill He provided the following statement following the passage of the bill: 7News On Your Side spoke with Thomas before the Virginia Senate passed his bill and he said he made this bill a priority after learning the challenges prosecutors and law enforcement faced when dealing with cases similar to what happened with Silveira's niece a crisp way to get the manslaughter charge to stick," Thomas said earlier this month Silveira's story is one that has, unfortunately, been reported countless times across the country. The Virginia Department of Health reported almost 2,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses in the commonwealth in 2023 The Virginia General Assembly 2025 legislative session began with a mandate from Gov Glenn Youngkin to tackle the fentanyl crisis Youngkin told lawmakers it was a priority to strengthen penalties for fentanyl dealers "Strong communities also work to prevent harmful drug use," Youngkin said during his State of the Commonwealth Address in January worked together to make an impact on the evil of fentanyl we must raise the penalty to felony homicide." The Virginia Senate passed a bill similar to Thomas' but making the increased charge felony homicide instead of involuntary manslaughter However, the language was changed to be identical to Thomas' bill -- making the increased charge for both bills involuntary manslaughter -- during the conference process "There are some that do need to be charged with felony homicide but this is casting a wider net," Silveira said "I'm glad they were able to come together and agree but at least acknowledges you caused someone's death." Youngkin's desk to be signed into law However, he has the option to send the bill back to lawmakers so they can pass it with his recommendations during the April reconvene session Silveira told 7News she is relieved there has been some progress made in the fight against the fentanyl crisis but we don't want her death to be without a purpose," Silveira said "We feel like for the last six years we've been trying to go for stronger penalties for traffickers and dealers this does send a message - both to the courts dealers - that we're taking it seriously." – After retiring from a successful career in Information Technology at Acushnet Company and serving more than a decade on the Planning Board in Dartmouth, Joel Silveira Ávila finally found the time to pursue his passion and interest in the history of his native island of Pico, Azores and delve into some questions and mysteries that have intrigued so many people for centuries “It seems as if every question that’s asked about the island there’s no definitive answer that can be provided,” he said has been one of the most controversial topics in the history of Portuguese navigation in the 15th century it has been difficult to accurately date the arrival of the Portuguese on some of those islands “Some have said that Pico was discovered years after Faial which is absolutely ridiculous because the islands can be seen from one another referring to the fact that the two Azorean islands are only separated by about 5 nautical miles (6 miles) not to mention that Pico is home to the highest point in Portugal Published in January by Letras Lavadas in the Azores and in the United States by Bruma Publications, a division of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) at California State University, Fresno Ávila’s book attempts to dispel some of the virtual fog that has engulfed the island of Pico for a long time by illuminating its history “It’s essentially 40 questions representing various topics with answers to those questions,” Ávila said about his 456-page manuscript which addresses Pico’s discovery and settlement and other essential elements such as religion and emigration that helped shape the island from the 15th century to the current date “I think what I wrote is sort of unique in the sense that it covers the entire history of the island,” Ávila said and I’ve got some material in there about that specific topic.” He said one of the most surprising things he found from his research was the lack of information available about the American Dabney family’s presence on the island of Pico and the location of their summer cottage in the village of Areia Larga “Most people who know about this American consular family know them in the context of the island of Faial but the family was also very important to the island of Pico during the 19th century,” Ávila said This topic became the subject of an article he wrote while he was finishing the book titled 'The Dabneys on Pico - A Forgotten Heritage,' which was published in the 2023 edition of the Boletim Núcleo Cultural da Horta (Horta Cultural Center Bulletin) In the book’s preface, Dr. Onésimo Teotónio Almeida Professor Emeritus of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University highlights Ávila’s stubborn quest to locate Dabney’s summer home in Pico intuition and keen observation solved the mystery to the amazement of those who had earlier given up the search,” wrote Prof Ávila came with his family to the United States in 1963 at age 7 He retired about seven years ago after working at the Acushnet Company for nearly four decades Ávila said it took him about four years to sift through tons of information he collected over the years and write the book “I tried to write it as simply as possible in terms of the language and the style even though the bibliography and endnotes are extensive,” he said “I don’t have any particular expertise in the history of the Azores so I wanted to make sure the sources I used… that someone could go to them The most challenging aspect of the writing process was to try to keep the book to a manageable size as his first draft had about 1,000 pages Ávila was able to trim the number of pages by about a half “While the well of facts seemed bottomless and the task unsurmountable Joel’s analytical approach and discerning approach enabled him to play the part of cold-blooded surgeon with one significant difference: a surgeon dissects and removes the malignant portions of a body whereas the facts that he had collected were in remarkably good health,” Dr said readers will undoubtedly find Ávila’s book to be a valuable resource “The added benefit is that the answer to every single question is always a rich offering a delightful reading experience,” he said “I wish that natives of other Azorean islands could imitate him and follow his example producing similar books about their lands.” Book release to be held at the New Bedford Whaling MuseumÁvila’s bookwill be released Thursday, April 17 at 6 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum as part of ‘Echoes of Pico: Exploring Azorean Whaling, History, and Heritage,’ an event of the Portuguese and Lusophone-World Lecture Series The event will also feature a screening of Nick Francis’s documentary ‘The Last Azorean Whalemen’ and a panel discussion offering a unique opportunity to reflect on Azorean whaling traditions and heritage Tickets for the event are $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.whalingmuseum.org/program/echoes-of-pico-exploring-azorean-whaling-history-and-heritage/ Where can you purchase Ávila's book?'Shades of Black and Gray: An inquiry into the Island of Pico and its history' will be available for purchase at the New Bedford Whaling Museum event or through Bruma Publications at https://filamentosarteseletras.art/2023/12/08/bruma-publication-from-pbbi-fresno-state-books-for-all-seasons/ Ávila said there are other book presentations being planned including one in Pico this summer and one at  California State University “If you go to Pico and you just travel around the island it’s obvious that those two structures are the remains of the Franciscan monasteries They’re the most impressive structures on the island; I mean in terms of size “I find very little information has been written about the history of those monasteries It’s as if they don’t want to admit they ever existed So that kind of sparked my interest in finding out more about it.” ShareSaveCommentBusinessSportsMoneyPFL 8 Results: Winners And Losers From Kasanganay Vs. awards for their work While many students have dispersed away from campus for the summer members of the Sartor Lab have stayed to continue their research studies leading to recognition and funding by both renowned research institutions and the university The Sartor Lab primarily studies the role of epigenetics in substance use disorders (SUD) and addiction behavior investigating both mechanistic pathways of the disease as well as potential pharmacotherapies for opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid withdrawal symptoms “The summer research programs provide students with invaluable opportunities to delve deeply into a project as there are no classes and few meetings to interfere with the experiments,” Sartor highlights a second year pharmacology and toxicology Ph.D was awarded the Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS) Graduate Summer Fellowship This award is offered to UConn graduate students who contribute to projects related to brain and cognitive science research Seyednejad’s work studies the epitranscriptomic mechanisms that underly cocaine use disorder he is focusing on identifying substance-induced post-transcriptional changes to RNA using a novel mass spectrometry based approach He hopes that his work can be used to shed light on the understudied field of epitranscriptomic modifications and their contribution to the addiction phenotype as well as to pave the way for identifying novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of cocaine use disorder Before his studies here at UConn School of Pharmacy from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran He has had a handful of peer reviewed publications in the field of pharmacology and toxicology and has presented on his work at numerous conferences and symposiums Seyednejad is a representative of the UConn School of Pharmacy Dean’s Student Liaison Committee and a mentor for undergraduate researchers in the Sartor Lab as well was also awarded the IBACS Graduate Summer Fellowship Lehane’s project investigates the potential for (2R,6R)-Hydroxynorketamine (HNK) as a novel pharmacotherapy for the treatment of OUD The Sartor Lab has previously identified HNK as an effective agent for alleviating opioid withdrawal symptoms and Lehane’s current project is aimed at further investigating the specific mechanisms involved in HNK therapy Lehane received a Bachelor of Science in physiology and neurobiology from the UConn College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a minor in psychological science Lehane assisted in behavioral neuroscience research in which he acquired skills in both addiction behavior research and behavioral genetic testing Lehane has contributed as a teaching assistant for multiple courses and he was selected for a pre-doctoral fellowship in 2023 was awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) award by the UConn Office of Undergraduate Research which financially allows students to continue engaging in research projects during the summer months Cruceta Ramirez also contributes to the HNK research project specifically focusing on the functional effects of HNK within the hippocampus of mice brains during opioid withdrawal Previously, Cruceta Ramirez has also been awarded as a McNair Research Scholar and a CAPS Research Scholar at UConn Cruceta Ramirez serves as an active member of the School of Pharmacy Diversity Committee the Student Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (SPPAG) was named a McNair Research Scholar and CAPS Research Scholar at UConn for his additional contributions to the HNK project in the Sartor Lab Silveira’s research specifically examines the effects of HNK on neuroinflammation in opioid addiction using animal models which could also pave the way for further research investigating HNK use in other neuroinflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer’s or depression Silveira has been dedicated to giving back to his community Silveira served as a UConn Medical Brigade Volunteer in Athens where he focused on providing accessible health care to locals Silveira serves as the treasurer of the UConn Brazilian Student Association (BraSA) an academic engagement mentor for La Comunidad Intelectual Learning Community and Transforming to Achieve Success (METAS) peer mentor for the UConn Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center Silveira also participates in intramural soccer at UConn a junior neuroscience student at Bowdoin College in Maine was awarded under the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program by the National Science Foundation intended for undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about a Ph.D allows students to apply for research positions at other universities with more extensive research programs and funding than their home institution Patel wanted to work in the Sartor Lab because of her interest in behavioral epigenetics which parallels some of the work she has done at Bowdoin College Patel’s work certainly deviates from the lab’s typical focuses of OUD and addiction; she is investigating a potential link between HNK and the treatment of glioblastoma The Sartor Lab does not specialize in cancer research so Patel has worked throughout the summer to establish this kind of work within the lab which she mentions has been a learning moment for everyone while it is likely a standalone project in the lab will help guide further research as the lab investigates how HNK works “I am thrilled to work with so many bright and motivated students,” says Sartor “They bring much enthusiasm and fresh perspectives to our research projects.”
