The new play runs at WP Theater in a co-production with Colt Coeur
Dan Rubins
Sami Monroe (Nimene Sierra Wureh) is a wünderkind theatermaker who does it all
She’s a Ghanaian American “director slash playwright slash dramaturg slash intimacy coordinator,” as she announces whenever she has a chance
after a big early success—apparently she’s won a Tony for directing a revival of Lynn Nottage’s Ruined—she’s been invited to represent the art form at Diaspora Now!
Like Sami, the contemplative but overstuffed minor•ity tries to do it all, too. Playwright francisca da silveira’s minor•ity
a co-production of WP Theater and Colt Coeur
tackles a litany of topics seldom studied onstage: the demeaning demands of a majority-white consortium of arts funders on African diasporic artists; which artists get to tell which stories across global Black communities; and the cultural and generational clashes between Gen-Z Americans and everybody else
Minor•ity frames the play as a storyteller’s fable
lack a plot sturdy enough for them to flourish
director Shariffa Ali’s smoothly staged production is anchored by a commanding performance from Nedra Marie Taylor as Céza
a Cape Verdean painter whose work relentlessly reimagines the volcano in the town where she grew up
Céza is struggling to overcome years of artistic block
That dry spell coincides more or less with the dissolution of her relationship with Cheikh (Ato Essandoh)
a Senegalese-British storyteller who’s back on the conference circuit to raise money for an afterschool program he wants to launch back home
and Sami are appearing on a panel together while Céza battles backstage to finish a blank canvas to appease her funders
Taylor’s Céza is impeccably poised and a bit austere
homesick rage beneath her impossibly cool surface
too: when she furiously spits red wine onto the white canvas
Taylor is equally compelling at conveying Céza’s early suave assuredness and her splintering facade; she also makes comic drunkenness delightful
It takes the perceptive Céza no time at all to read Sami’s national background like a book: “Americans are always the ones with identity issues.” Sami
overcome in equal part by self-importance and self-doubt
constantly calls out Céza and Cheikh in somewhat condescending terms they don’t even understand: “I hope you’re not trying to
gatekeep ancestors,” she tells Cheikh when he questions whether her theater work runs as deep as his storytelling
in her outsiderness both to this global artmaking world and to this intimate relationship
And because she’s constantly annoying Céza and Cheikh
interrupting their reunion and insinuating herself into their personal and professional business
She’s just too much of a caricature and too clueless an observer of her co-panelists’ reactions
to persuade us that da silveira really respects Sami as an equal-footed participant in the play
It’s only in a potent monologue about a Juilliard audition
in which Sami imagines her white adjudicators as “grotesque salivating monsters trying to convince a young Black girl to choose their institution and she’s just slurping the drool dripping out of their mouths,” that the character snaps into focus
since the play needs to maneuver the characters into place again and again in order to keep the conversation flowing
minor•ity’s plot frequently feels contrived
Technical delays force the trio to spend more time together while they wait
Céza’s giant canvas shows up in the green room instead of in her designated studio space so—rather than requesting to have it moved to facilitate her tortured
private process—she’s constantly working in a spot where Sami and Cheikh will keep encountering her
even though the whole play has a storytelling frame in which the typical rules of verisimilitude may not apply
the obvious false note of a green room that only three panelists at a global conference ever enter starts to get distracting: where’s everybody else
These complaints may be plot-point quibbles
but minor•ity can’t afford to have its audience distracted when da silveira has so many important things to say
At least whenever Taylor’s Céza has the mic
minor•ity’s politics and polemics feel as thoughtfully thorny as they ought to

TRACK RADARFentanyl victim family pushing Va
lawmakers to pass bill upgrading charge to manslaughterby Christian Flores
WASHINGTON (7News) — Faythe Silveira was excited about what the future held for her niece
But that future was cut short by a deadly fentanyl overdose
Paula was on a full scholarship at Bridgewater College when she took a fentanyl-laced pill that killed her
"My niece was 18 when she passed away in March of 2021," Silveira said
"It was very shocking for us and our family
She took a pill that was sold to her on social media as a Percocet," Silveira said
"Kids are invincible and they don't think this is going to happen to them
Almost four years after Paula's death
Silveira and her family are still processing their tragedy
READ MORE | Residents receive anonymous texts to oppose new bill paving the way for a Tysons casino
was the lack of accountability for the person who sold her niece the tainted drug
"If you lose a niece or family member
I saw my sister and brother-in-law going through so much grief
She was trying to figure out why the charges weren't very serious and why he was out after only four months," Silveira said
"I have three daughters and just had my first grandbaby
I'll never see my daughter get married
I'll never have grandkids.' That pain and grief just keeps cycling through
the things you don't have because of her death."
been reported countless times across the country
The Virginia Department of Health reported almost 2,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses in the commonwealth in 2023
That makes up almost 80 percent of all overdose deaths in Virginia
Silveira quickly learned she and her family were not alone in their grief
"We have been finding that many families that lose someone to fentanyl wasn't investigated
The ones that were investigated did not end up with significant charges
the person that sold to my niece had caused someone else's death just a few months before
and then a year later caused another person's death that we know of," Silveira said
During this year's Virginia General Assembly session
Silveira has driven a two-hour-plus journey from Harrisonburg to testify in favor of bills cracking down on fentanyl
One of those bills, House Bill 2657
would allow prosecutors to file an involuntary manslaughter charge against a drug dealer who sells fentanyl leading to an overdose death
Virginia Del. Josh Thomas (D-Prince William) authored the bill after learning the challenges prosecutors and law enforcement faced when dealing with cases similar to what happened with Silveira's niece
"The route they've been taking is to pump up the amount of distribution drug charges
They would say possession with intent to distribute and try and tack on as much sentencing as they can there
a crisp way to get the manslaughter charge to stick," Thomas said
they could still eventually get that result
but they have to get through a couple of extra steps to prove it
What this would do is just immediately codify it into the legal code as its own separate charge
That kind of streamlines the process for our prosecutors
with some other commonwealth's attorneys I've spoken with
is that it makes the charging and sentencing they're requesting a lot more efficient."
Thomas pointed to examples he heard from prosecutors trying to tack on an involuntary manslaughter charge against a dealer who sold a laced pill that killed a victim but had to settle for possession with intent to distribute charges
Thomas said prosecutors would be able to do both
we need a direct approach in the code to symbolize to Virginians that we take this very seriously
and now fentanyl has its own charge in the code because the drug is so deadly," Thomas said
and I have great respect for law enforcement
I see this really terrible drug overtaking our communities in Prince William County and Northern Virginia
and law enforcement needing more tools to do that job
there's a similar bill being discussed in the Virginia Senate
Thomas said there would be a conference process to hammer out a bill combining elements of both pieces of legislation
before being sent to the governor's desk
the Prince William County-based lawmaker told 7News his bill is also meant to send a message
"The message is this: We are serious about protecting our communities
and that starts with holding people accountable," Thomas said
if you sell a drug knowingly and that fentanyl kills someone
Silveira said she hopes this is a message that prevents other families from going through what she and her family have had to deal with the past four years
"At least it acknowledges you caused someone's death
whether it was proven you knew it could kill them or not," Silveira said
After three straight PFL seasons at light heavyweight
Josh Silveira is trying something new this time around
Silveira (14-4) beat Mike Shipman (17-5) with a unanimous decision this past Friday in the opening round of the 2025 middleweight tournament
He moved on to a semifinal matchup against Fabian Edwards in late June
Silveira came up short in his 205-pound seasons
but started the middleweight portion of his career off right
Silveira spoke to the media following his win at 2025 PFL World Tournament 3

and their children in 1969 and they settled in Stoughton
Although it was a difficult decision to leave their native country
they hoped to provide their family with a better future and more opportunities
Amelia and Antonio worked diligently to save for a home to raise their family in their new country
they realized their dream and purchased a home in Stoughton
Amelia used her "old country" skills to economize and provide for her family
In the early years she made most of her children's clothes with donated materials
She made jams from the fruit trees in her yard and maintained a garden to provide fresh produce for the family
She quickly learned she could get bonuses for shopping with S&H Greenstamps...
Despite consistently working 40-hour weeks and maintaining a household
Summer weekends often involved a road trip
She loved to unfold a map on the dining room table and the family would follow along the route she would layout for the next day...
everyone learned to read a map and follow road signs to help copilot the road trip (one of her many teaching moments)
a picnic lunch would be packed for the early morning road trip
Amelia was a talented and meticulous crafter
Whether she was crocheting doilies or lace curtains
knitting bedspreads or quilting she was a perfectionist
She learned how to use the loom and made wool blankets for each family member (from wool she had carded and spun into yarn from the sheep she raised)
Amelia loved the challenge of a new project…reupholstering chairs
or designing a new garden all brought her immense joy and a sense of accomplishment
In addition to always wanting to learn to improve her hands on techniques
Amelia was predeceased by her husband of 64 years
Renato Serpa and Alda Serpa both of Taunton and Nazare Parker and her husband David Parker of Middleboro and their children Alina Parker of Arlington
and Brendan and Evan Parker both of Middleboro
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in the US
Visitation will be held at the Farley Funeral Home
Friday January 3rd at the Funeral Home at 9:30 AM
followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton Street in Stoughton at 10:30 AM.
Amelia felt passionate about helping those less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony's Food Pantry at https://stoughtoncatholic.org/stanthonys

the skeleton sliders had quite the unexpected engagement scenario but don't worry
Not quite the response the Rio Grande-born slider was after, but there was a reason for the most unexpected of responses from her German-born, Belgian-representing girlfriend.
Meylemans had herself been going to ask Silveira to marry her – on exactly the same boat trip, even down to having a ring in her pocket.
Nevertheless, all was right with the world, after both finally said yes, yes, yes.
But how did this most unexpected of competitions happen?
"I bought her a private boat tour when we went to Brazil
and I had already made plans to propose then
"I also bought an engagement ring in like
I think February," picks up Meylemans
a two-time Olympian and Belgium's first world medallist in the sport after claiming silver in 2024
13 years after joining the World Cup tour in 2011
"I sent it to a friend's house; she sent it to her mum's
but then the ring didn't arrive on time
then I was like okay Brazil's perfect
I have that boat trip that she got me so perfect
"I was like come on," laughed Meylemans. "I literally had it on the boat ready to go."
"I won that competition," smiled Silveira.
"She beat me to it definitely," agreed Meylemans, before Silveira added, while both showed their ring fingers to the cameras: "Ended up being the same ring too, which is a coincidence."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kim Meylemans (@kimmeylemans)
The ultimate dream is not out of the realms of possibility
little more than a year before the XXV Winter Olympiad begins
the pair claimed medal positions at the St
Moritz World Cup with Meylemans claiming silver to Silveira's bronze
"Thank you St.Moritz 🥹," posted Meylemans afterwards
alongside a reel of the rapid runs from both
"Career/life goal: Share a World Cup podium ✅ Watching our two (non wintersport nations) flags raise together during the medal ceremony was a moment neither one of us will forget," added Meylemans
"The people close to us know how hard it was to get here but also how much our love for each other has been the leading force to this success."
The pair have teamed up to train together but then also have to manage the emotions that come with competing against each other
"I think it's easier than having someone at home than you miss all the time," said Silveira of the 24-7 nature of their job and relationship
"So at least we get to do everything together
But they also confirm that "competing is hard sometimes"
Silveira had a tough year on new equipment and learning her sled
had a cracking period with a first-ever World Cup win
"It was quite the contrast," said Silveira
"and I think it helped me learn how to deal with that situation a little bit better."
"And now she's turning it around
and now I have to deal with it," smiled Meylemans
in our small situation then that's great for us."
there's another option that would make for a very happy household

He is believed to have committed suicide after suffering severe complications from gender-transition surgery
Last year, a series of Yelp reviews surfaced on social media
written by a young man named Yarden Silveira
Silveira was a detransitioner—a person who once identified as transgender but no longer does—who suffered severe complications from gender-related genital surgery
Yarden died only two months after posting the reviews
Their discovery briefly made waves on social media
but details of Yarden’s life and death remained obscure
hidden behind multiple aliases and a vanished online presence
through investigative work and interviews with his mother
This evidence reveals a boy on the autism spectrum who struggled to accept his homosexuality
Health professionals facilitated his transition when he was a teenager
only to be rebuffed by the same medical community that had readily agreed to operate
Yarden’s last wish was for accountability from the medical establishment
His story is a devastating testament to the failures of that establishment
Rather than help a healthy gay man come to terms with who he was
doctors “affirmed” his insecurities and led him down a path of surgery
when he begged for help reversing or repairing what had been done to his body
The timeline and assertions that follow are based on Yarden’s online posts and conversations with his family
The physicians mentioned either did not respond to comment requests or declined to comment
Yarden was born Jorden Matthew Dykes on February 20
She raised him alongside two younger daughters in modest circumstances
with a man whom Ginger described as “abusive.”
Yarden showed signs of experiencing the world differently
he developed an intense fixation with vacuum cleaners
He had been in therapy since around age five for anger and anxiety and had received multiple diagnoses
including ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder
Doctors finally identified Asperger’s syndrome (now classified under autism spectrum disorder) when he was about ten
triggering conflict with paternal relatives who had conservative religious views
Two years later, at 15, Yarden told his mother that he was transgender. He believed that he had a “female brain”—the still-prevalent but scientifically flawed notion that transgender-identifying individuals’ brains resemble those of the opposite sex
Kendra and Ginger recalled that transgender issues quickly became an all-consuming fixation for Yarden
Within months of announcing his transgender identity
Yarden began making plans to seek medical assistance
By 16, Yarden had socially transitioned. He began using the name Emily, adopted female pronouns, grew out his hair, and wore feminine attire. It was 2014—the year of the “transgender tipping point.” Public awareness of trans issues was surging, and the number of children identifying as transgender spiked
His mother noticed that he frequently changed his name
with monikers often tied to fleeting fixations or short-lived friendships
cycling through intense interests—social justice
He also began seeing a Fresno-based gender-affirming therapist, Carol Montgomery Brosnac. Yarden later claimed that Brosnac and other health professionals had encouraged his transition and fostered unrealistic expectations
“My doctors and therapists said it was possible to change genders and even recommended that I transition,” he wrote
At 18, Yarden was preparing for the next step in his transition: a penile-inversion vaginoplasty, in which an otherwise healthy penis is surgically dissected, with its tissue rearranged to construct a facsimile of a vagina. He underwent the procedure shortly after his nineteenth birthday, in early 2017, at Align Surgical Associates in San Francisco
The surgery marked the beginning of a downward spiral. Soon afterward, he was back in the hospital with severe complications, including excessive blood loss that required a transfusion. According to medical records
Yarden developed necrosis of the “vaginal” tissue
he was hospitalized repeatedly to undergo corrective surgeries
in which sections of tissue from his abdomen were transplanted to replace the lost tissue
In May 2019, Yarden underwent what he hoped would be a final revision vaginoplasty, this time performed by surgeon Maurice Garcia at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles
The procedure utilized a segment of Yarden’s colon in an attempt to replace tissue lost in previous surgeries
Garcia wrote that Yarden showed a “lack of insight” about the “irreversible” nature of closing the surgically created canal and appeared to have “unreasonable expectations.”
“then I wouldn’t have wasted so many years of my life for nothing.”
Both doctors filed restraining orders against him
Using a Birthright trip to Israel as an opportunity, Yarden took his return ticket to New York, where he spent six months homeless before securing a spot in a Brooklyn supportive-housing program
adopting the name Yarden Matityahu Silveira—Yarden being the Hebrew equivalent of his birth name
By 2021, he had joined the Detransitioner community on Reddit using the name “Mindless-Mistake-176.” The forum was then a small community
one of the few spaces where detransitioners could share their experiences
Through his posts, a clearer picture of Yarden’s circumstances emerged. Struggling with chronic pain from his surgeries, he attended weekly therapy and regularly used cannabis to cope. He chronicled ongoing suffering, a sense of betrayal, and futile attempts to find medical help, detailing one doctor after another who refused to assist him
Djordjevic’s office warned Yarden to stop contacting them or face police intervention
Yarden seemed to recognize that his autism may have influenced his decision to transition. “Maybe if I didn’t have autism, maybe if my brain wasn’t so defective, I would have caught on before it was too late,” he wrote
In 2016, Yarden claimed that he had been sexually assaulted by a man and was deeply distressed when some peers didn’t believe him. Autistic individuals are at higher risk of sexual assault
often because of their difficulty reading social cues
On May 20, 2021, Yarden died in New York. The medical examiner listed “unknown circumstances” on his death certificate. According to Kendra, no autopsy was performed because some Jewish traditions discourage it
Nonetheless, Yarden’s mother believes that he ended his own life. He had been open about suicidal thoughts. She also acknowledges that complications from his surgical issues might have played a role. Yarden described his worsening condition in graphic detail—a significant blockage caused by scar tissue and an exposed colon
his physical and mental suffering were inextricably bound together
He was laid to rest at Mount Richmond Cemetery on Staten Island
a burial ground managed by the Hebrew Free Burial Association
which provides Jewish burials for those in need
If we can draw any lesson from Yarden’s short and painful life
it is that blind affirmation can do irreparable harm
especially for autistic or otherwise vulnerable youth who cling to the hope that adopting a transgender identity will solve their deeper struggles
and now the world is a little darker without him,” his mother

It’s been great advice that I’ve passed along to my teams over the years
How has your field changed since you started out in luxury

Marketing has undergone sea changes since I first started
It’s become highly data driven and audiences are precisely targeted

Commissioned piece by Laura Vinci in dialogue with the house
The Orelhão (Brazilian telephone cabin designed by Chu Ming)
Brazilian architect Chu Ming Silveira's 1970s brutalist house design is one of two iconic modernist residences hosting the ABERTO art and design exhibition that opens this month in São Paulo
A previously unseen house by Chu Ming Silveira forms the backdrop for this summer's ABERTO art and design exhibition in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo. The brutalist architecture home
which has never been published or opened to the public
was created in the early 1970s by the visionary Asian Brazilian architect and designer – whose work remains largely unknown outside the country's borders
While Ohtake's undoubtedly masterful house has been celebrated widely over the years
Until now – as the exhibition organisers picked the home in São Paulo’s Morumbi neighbourhood precisely for its lesser-known presence in the public realm
With its bold concrete and glass structure
the house was crafted to symbolise a vision for the home of the future
at the time of its design – bringing together a powerful aesthetic with functionality
smooth glass surfaces are juxtaposed with rougher concrete textures in a composition that was meant to be lived in and enjoyed – rather than simply admired as an art piece
a range of pieces will be displayed by creatives across the art and design fields
Among them will be Silveira's youngest son
who will celebrate his mother's legacy through a showcase of his designs

ABERTO's inaugural edition took place in the only private residence ever built in São Paulo by architect Oscar Niemeyer; while the second edition was in a house designed by Villanova Artigas

The Chu Ming Silveira residence and the Tomie Ohtake residence will be open to the public during ABERTO from 10 August to 6 October 2024

World leaders at the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa
Around Cornell
News directly from Cornell's colleges and centers
80% of households cook meals over open fires or traditional stoves using polluting fuels such as wood
the International Energy Agency convened the “Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa” at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris to address this problem and secure financial commitments from participating countries and organizations

at the 2024 Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa
The 2024 Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa brought together more than 1,000 high-level global leaders with the goal to make 2024 a turning point for progress on ensuring access to clean cooking for all
One of those invited to attend was Semida Silveira
professor of practice in Systems Engineering and faculty fellow of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability
She was nominated by the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition
a global organization of engineers and energy systems experts advising the United Nations secretary general on how to accelerate the energy transition and keep the 1.5-degrees Celsius target alive
“I think it's quite amazing that we had such a high-level meeting for clean cooking,” said Silveira
Clean cooking is part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG7)
This goal includes access to clean cooking and is one of the most important goals of the SDG7 because if we don't solve issues of energy access
there are many other goals we cannot solve
food security or even issues related to education.”
According to the International Energy Agency
there are currently 2.3 billion people in the world who do not have access to clean cooking
and nearly 1 billion of those are in Africa
the number of people in Africa who do not have access to clean cooking is increasing
In addition to the importance of using clean fuels to combat climate change
clean fuels are also important for health and social reasons
Women and children especially are the ones most affected
they breathe in carbon monoxide and other harmful gasses
To obtain the fuel for traditional methods of cooking
women and children can spend four or more hours per day collecting dung
agricultural waste or whatever is available and burnable to fuel their stove – followed by several hours cooking
“Emissions from traditional cooking methods are small percentage of the climate problem
but the benefits of bringing clean cooking to the population is greater than just the benefits to the environment,” said Silveira
particularly in the rural areas of Africa: releasing time for women to pursue other activities or other productive goals
and protecting them – and the population – from exposure to gasses that are harmful to health.”
Two of the most-frequently cited barriers to clean cooking are cultural resistance and affordability
and the summit focused on addressing the affordability barrier by raising funds to make clean cooking less expensive: providing subsidies for stoves and increasing liquid petroleum gas availability
“There are so many advantages to clean cooking
but people cannot afford it,” Silveira said
so I was glad to see the summit address affordability
but capital markets are picking up and industries – particularly the oil and gas industry – are looking for opportunities like investing in clean cooking to reduce emissions
Silveira views the new opportunities for subsidies as a positive change but is concerned about potential pitfalls
such as volatile markets and no access to liquid petroleum gas if subsidies are discontinued
Another disadvantage is that subsidies do not create linkages in the local economy
very few cooking stoves are produced in Africa because it is less expensive to produce them in China
Providing a subsidy to purchase a stove does not create local jobs and a local economy for Africans
Silveira believes there is an opportunity to use a more creative
you have to overcome affordability and you have to change traditional practices,” she said
“If energy costs consume most of the money that impoverished people have
they will prioritize spending their money on something else
especially when traditional fuel is available and free
So that's why we need to think of clean cooking in terms of how to use funds to create the synergies that generate local supply chains.”
“Currently, the discussion on clean cooking is about energy security,” said Silveira. “But we are starting to talk more about ways to combine clean cooking with other aspects of the economy, such as agriculture. The communities have agriculture, and they have residues of agriculture. If they can produce their own biogas fuel using agricultural residue, this will create a positive cycle that can scale up.”
Silveira added: “I think the time is ripe for a more complex solution.“

passes bill upgrading charge to manslaughter for accidental fentanyl overdosesby Christian Flores
(7News) — As the Virginia General Assembly's session came to a close this weekend
lawmakers passed two bills allowing prosecutors to charge drug dealers with involuntary manslaughter if they sold fentanyl-laced drugs leading to death
Not a day goes by when she doesn't think about what could have been for her niece
"She was definitely impacting a lot of lives
she would always help me out when I needed help.' She was just that friendly
"There was a lot of hope for her future."
Paula was a student at Bridgewater College when she died of an accidental fentanyl overdose after taking a pill that was sold to her on social media as a Percocet
March marks the four-year anniversary of her family's tragedy
Silveira told 7News that the passage of House Bill 2657 at least provides a glimmer of hope that other families don't have to suffer like she has
The bipartisan bill adjusts the Virginia law surrounding chargeable offenses for involuntary manslaughter
adding the sale of fentanyl-laced drugs that ultimately lead to death
"I think it is a deterrence," Silveira said
"I feel like this does send a stronger message to the dealers and the traffickers that they can get more significant time if they cause someone's death."
Virginia Del. Josh Thomas authored the bill
He provided the following statement following the passage of the bill:
7News On Your Side spoke with Thomas before the Virginia Senate passed his bill
and he said he made this bill a priority after learning the challenges prosecutors and law enforcement faced when dealing with cases similar to what happened with Silveira's niece
a crisp way to get the manslaughter charge to stick," Thomas said earlier this month
Silveira's story is one that has, unfortunately, been reported countless times across the country. The Virginia Department of Health reported almost 2,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses in the commonwealth in 2023
The Virginia General Assembly 2025 legislative session began with a mandate from Gov
Glenn Youngkin to tackle the fentanyl crisis
Youngkin told lawmakers it was a priority to strengthen penalties for fentanyl dealers
"Strong communities also work to prevent harmful drug use," Youngkin said during his State of the Commonwealth Address in January
worked together to make an impact on the evil of fentanyl
we must raise the penalty to felony homicide."
The Virginia Senate passed a bill similar to Thomas'
but making the increased charge felony homicide instead of involuntary manslaughter
However, the language was changed to be identical to Thomas' bill -- making the increased charge for both bills involuntary manslaughter -- during the conference process
"There are some that do need to be charged with felony homicide
but this is casting a wider net," Silveira said
"I'm glad they were able to come together and agree
but at least acknowledges you caused someone's death."
Youngkin's desk to be signed into law
However, he has the option to send the bill back to lawmakers so they can pass it with his recommendations during the April reconvene session
Silveira told 7News she is relieved there has been some progress made in the fight against the fentanyl crisis
but we don't want her death to be without a purpose," Silveira said
"We feel like for the last six years we've been trying to go for stronger penalties for traffickers and dealers
this does send a message - both to the courts
dealers - that we're taking it seriously."

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
DARTMOUTH – After retiring from a successful career in Information Technology at Acushnet Company and serving more than a decade on the Planning Board in Dartmouth, Joel Silveira Ávila finally found the time to pursue his passion and interest in the history of his native island of Pico, Azores
and delve into some questions and mysteries that have intrigued so many people for centuries
“It seems as if every question that’s asked about the island
there’s no definitive answer that can be provided,” he said
has been one of the most controversial topics in the history of Portuguese navigation in the 15th century
it has been difficult to accurately date the arrival of the Portuguese on some of those islands
“Some have said that Pico was discovered years after Faial
which is absolutely ridiculous because the islands can be seen from one another
referring to the fact that the two Azorean islands are only separated by about 5 nautical miles (6 miles)
not to mention that Pico is home to the highest point in Portugal
Published in January by Letras Lavadas in the Azores and in the United States by Bruma Publications, a division of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) at California State University, Fresno
Ávila’s book attempts to dispel some of the virtual fog that has engulfed the island of Pico for a long time by illuminating its history
“It’s essentially 40 questions representing various topics with answers to those questions,” Ávila said about his 456-page manuscript
which addresses Pico’s discovery and settlement and other essential elements such as religion
and emigration that helped shape the island from the 15th century to the current date
“I think what I wrote is sort of unique in the sense that it covers the entire history of the island,” Ávila said
and I’ve got some material in there about that specific topic.”
He said one of the most surprising things he found from his research was the lack of information available about the American Dabney family’s presence on the island of Pico and
the location of their summer cottage in the village of Areia Larga
“Most people who know about this American consular family
know them in the context of the island of Faial
but the family was also very important to the island of Pico during the 19th century,” Ávila said
This topic became the subject of an article he wrote while he was finishing the book
titled 'The Dabneys on Pico - A Forgotten Heritage,' which was published in the 2023 edition of the Boletim Núcleo Cultural da Horta (Horta Cultural Center Bulletin)
In the book’s preface, Dr. Onésimo Teotónio Almeida
Professor Emeritus of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University
highlights Ávila’s stubborn quest to locate Dabney’s summer home in Pico
intuition and keen observation solved the mystery to the amazement of those who had earlier given up the search,” wrote Prof
Ávila came with his family to the United States in 1963 at age 7
He retired about seven years ago after working at the Acushnet Company for nearly four decades
Ávila said it took him about four years to sift through tons of information he collected over the years and write the book
“I tried to write it as simply as possible in terms of the language and the style
even though the bibliography and endnotes are extensive,” he said
“I don’t have any particular expertise in the history of the Azores
so I wanted to make sure the sources I used… that someone could go to them
The most challenging aspect of the writing process was to try to keep the book to a manageable size as his first draft had about 1,000 pages
Ávila was able to trim the number of pages by about a half
“While the well of facts seemed bottomless and the task unsurmountable
Joel’s analytical approach and discerning approach enabled him to play the part of cold-blooded surgeon with one significant difference: a surgeon dissects and removes the malignant portions of a body
whereas the facts that he had collected were in remarkably good health,” Dr
said readers will undoubtedly find Ávila’s book to be a valuable resource
“The added benefit is that the answer to every single question is always a rich
offering a delightful reading experience,” he said
“I wish that natives of other Azorean islands could imitate him and follow his example
producing similar books about their lands.”
Book release to be held at the New Bedford Whaling MuseumÁvila’s bookwill be released Thursday, April 17 at 6 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum as part of ‘Echoes of Pico: Exploring Azorean Whaling, History, and Heritage,’ an event of the Portuguese and Lusophone-World Lecture Series
The event will also feature a screening of Nick Francis’s documentary ‘The Last Azorean Whalemen’ and a panel discussion offering a unique opportunity to reflect on Azorean whaling traditions and heritage
Tickets for the event are $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.whalingmuseum.org/program/echoes-of-pico-exploring-azorean-whaling-history-and-heritage/
Where can you purchase Ávila's book?'Shades of Black and Gray: An inquiry into the Island of Pico and its history' will be available for purchase at the New Bedford Whaling Museum event or through Bruma Publications at https://filamentosarteseletras.art/2023/12/08/bruma-publication-from-pbbi-fresno-state-books-for-all-seasons/
Ávila said there are other book presentations being planned
including one in Pico this summer and one at California State University
“If you go to Pico and you just travel around the island
it’s obvious that those two structures are the remains of the Franciscan monasteries
They’re the most impressive structures on the island; I mean in terms of size
“I find very little information has been written about the history of those monasteries
It’s as if they don’t want to admit they ever existed
So that kind of sparked my interest in finding out more about it.”

SAUDI ARABIA - FEBRUARY 25: Impa Kasanganay prepares to fight against Johnny Eblen during ..
More the 2024 PFL vs Bellator: Champs event at Kingdom Arena on February 25
The finals in the light heavyweight and lightweight division are set for the 2024 PFL Playoffs following the PFL 8 fight card in Hollywood
Impa Kasanganay looks to go back-to-back at 205 pounds
as last year's tournament winner faces Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov in the final
Kasanganay punched his ticket to the 2024 final with a decision win over the man he defeated in the 2023 final
while Yagshimuradov scored a decision over 2022 champ Rob Wilkinson
a former Bellator champion competing in his first PFL tournament
defeated last year's runner-up Clay Collard by decision
Gadzhi Rabadanov scored a highlight-reel knockout win over Michael Dufort in the other lightweight semifinal scrap
winners and losers from the PFL 8 fight card
Impa Kasanganay defeats Josh Silveira via unanimous decision (29-28
Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov defeats Rob Wilkinson via unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)
Gadzhi Rabadanov defeats Michael Dufort via knockout (1:51 of Round 2)
Brent Primus defeats Clay Collard via unanimous decision (30-27
Biaggio Ali Walsh defeats Brian Stapleton via KO (0:55 of Round 1)
Mads Burnell defeats Elvin Espinoza via unanimous decision (29-28 x 3)
Thad Jean defeats Chris Brown via unanimous decision (30-27
Jordan Oliver defeats Braydon Akeo via unanimous decision (30-27
Michelle Montague defeats Marilia Morais via submission (Rear-naked choke at 1:44 of Round 1)
Impa Kasanganay: Josh Silveira put a lot of pressure on Impa Kasanganay to start their rematch on Friday
which was a smart approach after losing to Kasanganay in 2023
Kasanganay and his team made necessary adjustments ahead of the second round
matching Silveira’s pressure while gauging his opponent’s timing
The changes Kasanganay made following the first stanza were enough for him to get the decision win
Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov: These two light heavyweights seemed to respect each other's striking capabilities
while Rob Wilkinson looked to push forward and blitz his opponent with his aggression while landing more volume
who will now compete in the 2024 PFL light heavyweight final
Gadzhi Rabadanov: Gadzhi Rabadanov moved on to the 2024 PFL lightweight final with a massive knockout win over Michael Dufort
Rabadanov looked excellent in this matchup
He was relaxed and loose from the start of the contest
firing off fast straight punches while Dufort looked for an opening or threw looping punches
The finish of the fight was a spectacular left hook followed by ground and pound
Rabadanov and Primus should be a fun scrap for $1 million
Brent Primus: A former Bellator lightweight champion
Brent Primus used his wrestling to negate the boxing of Clay Collard on Friday night to secure a berth in the PFL Playoff final and a shot at $1 million
controlling his opponent on the ground for most of the fight while also doing damage with ground strikes
Primus’ first two PFL fights ended with submission wins; this one was a clear-cut decision victory
Biaggio Ali Walsh: Biaggio Ali Walsh was a monster favorite in this
He easily dispatched Brian Stapleton with a big right
The fight itself was extremely entertaining
Lazaro Dayron did an excellent job wrestling and striking
coming close to finishing Danny Sabatello with a powerful right that dropped his foe to the mat
Sabatello’s relentless cardio and wrestling attacks helped him in the second round
and it looked as if he was going to take control of the fight
as Dayron seemed to be fading under Sabatello’s pace during the second five minutes
he did an excellent job of boxing and keeping the fight on the feet through his sprawls
he also grabbed the fence and lost a point about halfway through the stanza
Mads Burnell: Mads Burnell showed heart and toughness in picking up the win over Edwin Espinoza
absorbing the best Espinoza had to offer in open space
and then dominated the fight in close and on the mat
who is now on a two-fight winning streak after beating Clay Collard by decision in June
Chris Brown: The welterweight between Thad Jean and Chris Brown was a wild 15-minute affair
most of them from odd angles and via unexpected techniques
he did his best to gauge the timing and space of his unorthodox opponent throughout the battle
landing the heavierand more damaging blows throughout the scrap
Jean entered the contest at 7-0 and with a big pop from the Florida crowd
The bout will be a good learning experience for Jean
He did well in not getting frustrated throughout the fight because of Brown’s style
except for the first round when he got a little too excited after he had Brown hurt in the first round and went for an ill-advised flying knee
Jean said he wants to be in the PFL tournament next year
Jordan Oliver: A former two-time NCAA wrestling champ with Oklahoma State
Jordan Oliver competed in his second pro fight on Friday night
It seemed as if Oliver wanted to concentrate on getting some cage time in and practice his striking against Braydon Akeo
He did not wrestle during the first 10 minutes of the fight
he focused on his leg kicks before going with his wrestling in the final round
He also needs to be aware of his chin and guard
as he had a very upright stance with a low boxing guard
Michelle Montague: Michelle Montague had an easy night in the opening fight of the PFL 8 fight card
forcing her to the cage and then scoring an easy takedown to side control
looking for a kimura and then an armbar before transitioning to a fight-ending rear-naked choke
She is now 6-0 with six rear-naked choke subs
Josh Silveira: Impa Kasanganay dominated Josh Silveira in the 2023 Playoff light heavyweight final
Silveira needed to change a lot to have a chance in Friday’s rematch
His change was to throw caution to the win and come out with more aggression
but Silveira could not sustain that pressure
and he didn’t make the necessary adjustments after Kasanganay changed his strategy going into the second round
Silveira’s lack of in-fight corrections hurt him
he should be given credit for attempting something different
Michael Dufort: Michael Dufort was like a coiled spring for much of his lightweight bout against Gadzhi Rabadanov
The problem with that was he never found the time and space to release that built-up pressure
Dufort was not very active in this matchup
perhaps because Rabadanov never gave him the opening he was looking for. That inactivity cost him
Clay Collard: Clay Collard’s lightweight tournament ended on Friday when he could not overcome the wrestling and ground striking of Brent Primus
Collard had some moments late in the third round when he had time and space to land some strikes
Collard made the lightweight tournament final in 2023
Elvin Espinoza: Elvin Espinoza had a few moments where he scored against Mads Burnell
but he could not deal with the pace and pressure of his opponent for the full 15 minute scrap
Braydon Akeo: Braydon Akeo fell to 5-4 following his decision loss to Jordan Oliver
He used his length well against his smaller opponent but he didn’t have much pop on his strikes
was simply outmatched by Michelle Montague

A bride and groom got married in Fatima Hospital Monday
just one hour before the father of the bride's last breath
Sabrina Silveira-DaCosta told NBC 10 her father
was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at least 10 years ago
Her father was admitted to Fatima Hospital in North Providence last Tuesday
The family realized that he was not going to make it to his daughter's wedding on September 7
"Everyone was able to bring the wedding to him in the hospital and he got to walk me down the aisle," said Sabrina
Frank Silveira escorted his daughter Sabrina down the hospital hallway
"I was just so grateful he was there with me
we had a moment before we walked down the aisle where he told me I looked beautiful and that he's so happy for me," explained Sabrina
The couple was surrounded by their loved ones
It's a lot of emotions," said Sabrina
Sabrina can appreciate the care and attention the doctors and nurses put into their family while at Fatima Hospital
Sabrina's siblings also work in the healthcare field
"I think we realized what our calling was
we realized how difficult it was to be sick," said Sabrina
"Knowing we're helping people like our dad is so special," she said
The couple thanked the staff at Fatima Hospital and Continuum Care Hospice of Rhode Island for their support
"Our community hospitals don't get enough credit because any big hospital couldn't have done this for us," she said
Sabrina's father passed away about an hour after he "walked her down the aisle"
The bride and groom told NBC 10 they're positive Frank will still be at their September 7 wedding in spirit
through the food he requested for the wedding events
"We're still going to honor that
we're still going to make all those things," said the groom
"You keep saying he left [you] in good hands
but he made you who you are in a way that I don't think you need to be in good hands," said Sam to his wife
but I just want to say he made you an amazing person," he said to her

gasoline prices are estimated to drop by up to BRL 0.13 (thirteen cents) per liter
an impact that will also help control inflation
“We are taking another step toward making the Fuel of the Future law a reality today
E30 not only reduces costs for consumers but also strengthens Brazil’s energy security,” Silveira stated
The transition from E27 to E30 will eliminate the need to import 760 million liters of gasoline annually
this shift will increase ethanol demand by 1.5 billion liters and generate an estimated BRL 9 billion in sector investments
“E30 is safe for both our two- and four-wheeled fleets
Brazil will no longer be at the mercy of the international market and external price volatility
Gasoline prices will be driven by domestic competitiveness
FUEL OF THE FUTURE - Tests with E30 represents yet another advancement in the implementation of the Fuel of the Future law (Lei do Combustível do Futuro
which established guidelines for the decarbonization and modernization of the Brazilian energy matrix
Legislation allows increasing the limit of ethanol levels in gasoline up to 35%
reinforcing the country’s commitment to energy security and sustainability
The adoption of the new blend can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.7 million tons annually
the equivalent of removing 720,000 vehicle from the streets each year
The tests conducted by IMT were monitored by organizations from the automotive sector
the proposal to increase the blend to 30% will be sent to the National Energy Policy Council (Conselho Nacional de Política Energética/CNPE) before the end of the year

Within the lab of Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology
and Kaya Patel have been recognized with six individual awards for their work
While many students have dispersed away from campus for the summer
members of the Sartor Lab have stayed to continue their research studies
leading to recognition and funding by both renowned research institutions and the university
The Sartor Lab primarily studies the role of epigenetics in substance use disorders (SUD) and addiction behavior
investigating both mechanistic pathways of the disease as well as potential pharmacotherapies for opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid withdrawal symptoms
“The summer research programs provide students with invaluable opportunities to delve deeply into a project
as there are no classes and few meetings to interfere with the experiments,” Sartor highlights
a second year pharmacology and toxicology Ph.D
was awarded the Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS) Graduate Summer Fellowship
This award is offered to UConn graduate students who contribute to projects related to brain and cognitive science research
Seyednejad’s work studies the epitranscriptomic mechanisms that underly cocaine use disorder
he is focusing on identifying substance-induced post-transcriptional changes to RNA using a novel mass spectrometry based approach
He hopes that his work can be used to shed light on the understudied field of epitranscriptomic modifications and their contribution to the addiction phenotype
as well as to pave the way for identifying novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of cocaine use disorder
Before his studies here at UConn School of Pharmacy
from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran
He has had a handful of peer reviewed publications in the field of pharmacology and toxicology and has presented on his work at numerous conferences and symposiums
Seyednejad is a representative of the UConn School of Pharmacy Dean’s Student Liaison Committee and a mentor for undergraduate researchers in the Sartor Lab as well
was also awarded the IBACS Graduate Summer Fellowship
Lehane’s project investigates the potential for (2R,6R)-Hydroxynorketamine (HNK) as a novel pharmacotherapy for the treatment of OUD
The Sartor Lab has previously identified HNK as an effective agent for alleviating opioid withdrawal symptoms
and Lehane’s current project is aimed at further investigating the specific mechanisms involved in HNK therapy
Lehane received a Bachelor of Science in physiology and neurobiology from the UConn College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a minor in psychological science
Lehane assisted in behavioral neuroscience research in which he acquired skills in both addiction behavior research and behavioral genetic testing
Lehane has contributed as a teaching assistant for multiple courses
and he was selected for a pre-doctoral fellowship in 2023
was awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) award by the UConn Office of Undergraduate Research
which financially allows students to continue engaging in research projects during the summer months
Cruceta Ramirez also contributes to the HNK research project
specifically focusing on the functional effects of HNK within the hippocampus of mice brains during opioid withdrawal
Previously, Cruceta Ramirez has also been awarded as a McNair Research Scholar and a CAPS Research Scholar at UConn
Cruceta Ramirez serves as an active member of the School of Pharmacy Diversity Committee
the Student Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (SPPAG)
was named a McNair Research Scholar and CAPS Research Scholar at UConn for his additional contributions to the HNK project in the Sartor Lab
Silveira’s research specifically examines the effects of HNK on neuroinflammation in opioid addiction using animal models
which could also pave the way for further research investigating HNK use in other neuroinflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer’s or depression
Silveira has been dedicated to giving back to his community
Silveira served as a UConn Medical Brigade Volunteer in Athens
where he focused on providing accessible health care to locals
Silveira serves as the treasurer of the UConn Brazilian Student Association (BraSA)
an academic engagement mentor for La Comunidad Intelectual Learning Community
and Transforming to Achieve Success (METAS) peer mentor for the UConn Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center
Silveira also participates in intramural soccer at UConn
a junior neuroscience student at Bowdoin College in Maine
was awarded under the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program by the National Science Foundation
intended for undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about a Ph.D
allows students to apply for research positions at other universities with more extensive research programs and funding than their home institution
Patel wanted to work in the Sartor Lab because of her interest in behavioral epigenetics
which parallels some of the work she has done at Bowdoin College
Patel’s work certainly deviates from the lab’s typical focuses of OUD and addiction; she is investigating a potential link between HNK and the treatment of glioblastoma
The Sartor Lab does not specialize in cancer research
so Patel has worked throughout the summer to establish this kind of work within the lab
which she mentions has been a learning moment for everyone
while it is likely a standalone project in the lab
will help guide further research as the lab investigates how HNK works
“I am thrilled to work with so many bright and motivated students,” says Sartor
“They bring much enthusiasm and fresh perspectives to our research projects.”
