More than 30 young biologists have won awards on a course at Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium supported by De Beers Marine
A graduation ceremony was held at the aquarium
so named because it is sited on the southern tip of the African continent where two oceans meet
The 36 teenage biologists had completed a series of volunteer courses
attended an eco-camp and undertaken an environmental improvement action of their own
said: “The standard of young biologists this year was as high as ever
A central feature of De Beers’ strategy is operating sustainably
so we are thrilled to be associated with this course
which encourages young biologists to take the same approach.”
After the presentation of certificates and awards
the aquarium’s Head of Education Russell Stevens thanked De Beers Marine for its support for the education programme
We think De Beers has indeed done a lot of ‘somethings’.”
The course began with several days of theoretical and practical work
with students having the chance to work with living creatures and receiving training in the use of equipment such as digital microscopes
The eco-camp was on the Cape Peninsula where the young biologists took a closer look at marine life and experienced snorkelling
a beach clean-up and night coastal explorations
They went behind the scenes of the aquarium
which is run by a staff of 100 with 250 volunteers
and learnt about the types of careers available to people wanting to work with the ocean
Many are likely to go on to pursue careers in marine science and conservation
Feedback from one young biologist said: “I intend on working with my community to get involved and to make them more aware of what is happening to our oceans.”
Class representative Shawna Anthony said: “The sea is as close to a new world as we can come
I’ve learned how to appreciate the ocean even more
to step forward and solve the problems facing the ocean.”
The Two Oceans Aquarium offers a variety of free courses and educational opportunities for young students
Aquarium staff say the Young Biologist Course is their favourite course to run and they are “immensely grateful” to De Beers Marine for the continued sponsorship
which supports the mining and exploration fleet of De Beers Marine Namibia
has backed the aquarium’s Marine Sciences Academy for more than a decade
Senior Human Resources Manager at De Beers Marine
said: “We are proud of our partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium as we share the same value of care and support for our oceans and its inhabitants
The educational role played by the Aquarium intimately supports the sustainability and wellbeing of our two oceans
“It is encouraging that our youth is championing the environmental conservation cause to ensure that future generations continue to experience the phenomenal marine life and environment.”

Cascais
there's hardly anyone in Cascais who doesn't know Casa da Pérgola
a beautiful century-old mansion protected by a garden
photos have always been taken of the façade
which also stands out for its hand-painted tiles
but it's rarely been possible to cross that barrier
even though it houses a small hotel with just 12 rooms
The Bougain Restaurant & Garden Bar has opened on the ground floor of the Casa da Pérgola with a terrace that discreetly occupies the garden and where you feel very good (as you can see from the cover)
The menu is classic and the service attentive
There are the classics such as sole à meunière or duck confit
But don't leave without trying the carabineer and citrus rice or the steak tartare
which is made in front of people and can also be ordered as a main course

Former African Youth Champion, Taiwo Mati has moved up in the latest ranking released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), www.aclsports.com reports
The former World Youth bronze medallist remains Nigeria’s second-best ranked Nigerian in the world as the Portugal-based star moved two steps up to be placed 103 in the world
the African Games silver medallist attributed the rise to the points gathered from various tournaments in 2023
He told www.aclsports.com that ranked number two in Nigeria will help him put more effort in training and win tournaments in the country and club side
“I feel good to be ranked number two in Nigeria and at the same thing
I feel I need more work and also to put more effort in my training and workouts
“I would say the amount of tournaments and points I gained from the previous tournament I attended last year altogether helped in the rise of my ITTF World ranking”
“My expectations are just to keep the momentum and hopefully everything will work out well
Taiwo Mati placed second at the 2022 Portugal Cup and 2nd position at the Portugal Super Cup with Ginásio clube de Valbom

You will remember the name forever after your first lick of this ice cream
Some say this is Portugal’s finest ice cream parlour and
an Italian who moved to Portugal and brought his legacy with him - his family had been part of the Italian ice cream business since the 19th century
From Tamariz beach he moved to Valbom Avenue
earning legions of fans that came from all over the country to try his ice cream
and then had to wait six months for the store to reopen - until the mid- aughts
the brand was partly acquired by local businessmen
And they are now open all year long (a decision the Portuguese greeted with a big “hurrah”)
The fruit flavours are the brand’s calling card
with strawberry a top seller year upon year
Santini uses Portuguese fruit except for tropical flavours
and their cones are home-made from a wafer recipe inherited from Attilio
revealed only to their ice cream- making experts
winter in Cascais will be warm and cosyThe restaurant has been preparing for the cold with a covered
like Beef Wellington and profiteroles with hot chocolate
Martin’s Day was in evidence with the unveiling of new dishes at the Bougain Restaurant & Garden Bar
the cold and rain will arrive – and the restaurant that opened in April on the Avenida Valbom
is all set to welcome guests with comfort food and ingredients that taste best in wintertime
the menu will be much warmer with dishes such as cardinal prawn bisque (€14)
seared grouper with cauliflower purée and dill-flavoured olive oil (€27)
Beef Wellington with potato mille-feuille (€64/two people)
hot chocolate and pistachios (€12) – the four dishes that were served on the sunny day of the tasting.
These aren't the only novelties to mark the start of the winter season: for starters you'll find onion soup au gratin (€13) and vegetable tatin with burrata (€15); mains include a wonderfully creamy duck and cured sausage rice (€25); and for dessert there is torija
a Spanish-style eggy bread with jelly and orange mascarpone (€10)
“This isn’t about inventing whole new dishes,” says Miguel Garcia
who wants to continue reviving the classics of Mediterranean cuisine at the Bougain
and has been involved in the process of making the new creations with chef Diana Roque
the sole à meunière and the cardinal prawn rice
our star dish,” he continues.
It’s not only the menu at the “baby brother of the Café de São Bento”
that’s been adapted to the winter season: on the terrace
the mushroom heaters and blankets are already in place to take the chill off the colder days and nights
as are the awnings for covering the tables when it rains
The dining room inside seats 30 people and is cosy all year round
The Bougain is closed over Christmas (only serving lunches on 24 December)
but is preparing a special New Year's Eve menu: it starts with champagne
continues with cardinal prawn rice and rack of lamb with potato mille-feuille
It costs €190 per person and includes wine pairing – this rises to €260 if you stay overnight at The Pergola Boutique Hotel
and the dress code is black tie.
Livraria Galileu has been on Avenida Valbom
one of the town's most important commercial streets
In the past it hosted lively get-togethers and book signing sessions
and even organised the town’s first book fair
Famous for its imaginative window displays that always catch the attention of the curious
it offers an extensive selection that requires time to explore: new releases
