According to eyewitness reports, the assailants forced their way onto the company’s premises, vandalizing equipment and infrastructure while attacking employees on-site. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was orchestrated in order to illegally take over the mining company which is owned by Angela List. Workers described the scene as chaotic, with property worth millions of cedis destroyed, including mining equipment, vehicles, and administrative offices. The Western Regional Police Command has apprehended Isaac Ackun, Laurent Gaba and their accomplices and assisting with investigations. Speaking to the media, a representative from Adamus Mines condemned the attack, describing it as a “premeditated and unlawful invasion.” He called on the government to ensure that justice is served and measures are put in place to prevent future attacks. President of Lands & Mines Watch, an organization that promotes equitable mining and proper mining methods, Solomon Owusu has sounded a strong warning to any individual or entity seeking to illegally enter Adamus Resources and perpetrate fraud on Ghanaians. According to him, such attempts will be resisted vehemently with every sweat and blood. Volume 8 - 2021 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fmed.2021.672444 This article is part of the Research TopicWomen in Science - Ophthalmology 2021View all 12 articles Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are clinically and genetically heterogeneous rare disorders associated with retinal dysfunction and death of retinal photoreceptor cells Among the most frequent and severe forms of those retinopathies is retinitis pigmentosa (RP) that affects 1:4,000 individuals worldwide The genes that have been implicated in RP are associated with the proteins present in photoreceptor cells or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) Asymmetric presentation or sudden progression in retinal disease suggests that a gene mutation alone might not be responsible for retinal degeneration Immune responses could directly target the retina or be site effect of immunity as a bystander deterioration Autoantibodies against retinal autoantigens have been found in RP which led to a hypothesis that autoimmunity could be responsible for the progression of photoreceptor cell death initiated by a genetic mutation The other contributory factor to retinal degeneration is inflammation that activates the innate immune mechanisms If autoimmune responses contribute to the progression of retinopathy this could have an implication on treatment we provide a perspective on the current role of autoimmunity/immunity in RP pathophysiology The objective of this review is to provide a perspective on the current knowledge on the role of autoimmunity/immunity in retinal degeneration initiated by a genetic mutation The retina consists of two types of photoreceptor cells, rods that are responsible for night vision, and cones for daytime vision and color vision. RP is characterized by degeneration of rods and cones caused initially by the gene mutations, typically affecting rods. Vision loss occurs when the primary rods deteriorate and are eliminated, which usually causes healthy cones to decline next, resulting in blindness (5) The age of RP onset differs and depends on the gene mutations The rod dysfunction affects the peripheral retina and loss of central vision is the consequence of cone dysfunction it leaves rods mostly unaffected but can cause a severe loss of visual acuity and daylight vision Early-onset RP is diagnosed when the symptoms of mid-stage RP are already present at 2 years of age and late-onset RP is diagnosed when the symptoms are clinically apparent at or after midlife Thymic expression is a common feature for all the tissue-specific antigens and their levels of expression play a role in determining the susceptibility to autoimmunity against these molecules The other contributory factor to retinal degeneration is inflammation that activates innate immune mechanisms, such as toll-like receptors, inflammasome receptors, and complement components that initiate complex cellular cascades by recognizing or sensing different pathogen and damage-associated molecular patterns (31, 32) autoimmunity is likely to be responsible for the progression of photoreceptor cell death that was initiated by a defective gene the degree of immune reactivity against arrestin and the severity of disease in the patients with RP are not strongly correlated This observation suggests that the immune responses to the retinal autoantigens are regulated by factors other than the level of retinal damage and the release of antigens from the affected tissues The systemic autoimmune responses may play a bigger role in formation of AAbs These findings suggest that the presence of mutations and associated immune response could be part of the pathogenesis of RP This suggests that inflammatory mediators as well as AAbs may contribute to the development of inflammatory CME but the exact mechanism for the CME development and its persistence is still unknown Further studies are needed to understand whether the HLA polymorphism influence the development of RP Inherited retinal diseases represent a highly heterogeneous group of disorders that have one common element: abnormal visual function originating at the death of retinal photoreceptors. The gene defects can initiate death of retinal cells that can progress further to symptomatic changes mediated by immune and autoimmune responses (Figure 1) An initial gene mutation followed by sudden loss and progressive nature of retinal degeneration suggests the involvement of autoimmune responses Since there are a variety of genes and mutations that cause retinal degeneration gene replacement therapy approaches that are currently in development may be time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for treatment of all forms of RP If the autoimmune responses contribute to the progression of retinopathy this could have implication on development of retinal degeneration and success of gene replacement therapy Alternative approaches can be based on the immunological pathways that cause retinal degeneration in different forms of RP immunomodulatory and biologic drugs targeting B cells could be beneficial in slowing retinal degeneration caused by a gene mutation More studies are needed to fully establish the role of autoimmunity in different forms of retinal degenerations Schematic steps in progressive retinal degeneration Mutant-proteins accumulate during retinal degeneration and can be seen as new ultimately leading to autoimmune pathology Activation of immune cells by overproduction of cellular debris due to photoreceptor death results in the inner Blood Retina Barrier (BRB) breakdown which invites systemic macrophages into the retina Resident and circulating macrophages can contribute to secondary retinal damage from inflammation and in effect ruling by Justice Loddoh had dismissed counterclaims brought by Allan Morrison and Adamus Resources Pty Ltd “This ruling confirms that there is no Interim Management Committee at Adamus Resources Limited,” the company stated “The false claims and subsequent media reports have no legal or factual basis.” The company questioned the motives behind the misinformation and urged media outlets to verify facts before publication “These unfounded reports have the potential to harm the company’s operations and reputation,” it warned Adamus Resources assured stakeholders that any official communication would come from its communications bureau on the company’s official letterhead The public was advised to disregard claims about an IMC and treat them “with the contempt they deserve.” The company emphasized its commitment to transparency and urged media outlets to report responsibly More Stories Here Source: Mercy Mensah Comments (0) The Interim Management Committee (IMC) appointed by the Accra High Court of Justice in July 27 is facing significant challenges in executing its mandate the security personnel at the company’s operational site in Ellembelle have denied the IMC access to take over the management of the company This isn’t the first time the IMC has been prevented from carrying out its duties they’ve been blocked from entering the company’s premises including the Head Office in Accra and the operational site in Ellembelle The IMC was established due to ongoing disputes over the ownership of Adamus Resources Ltd The court’s order aimed to ensure the company’s operations continue uninterrupted while the legal battles are resolved Member of the committee Isaac Ackon has reaffirmed the IMC’s commitment to executing its mandate “The committee is determined to fulfill its duties as directed by the court.” A gunshot was fired by security personnel of Adamus Resources Limited a mining company in the Ellembelle District as they denied access to the Interim Management Committee (IMC) appointed by the Accra High Court The IMC was established to oversee the mine’s operations temporarily the company’s management and security team have repeatedly blocked the IMC’s attempts to take control of the mine Thanks to the professional intervention of Inspector Danquah and his police team stationed at the mine and the situation was brought under control The Interim Management Committee (IMC) members and their private security personnel were able to leave the mine peacefully without any damage or destruction of equipment This contradicts earlier reports on some news portals that thugs had attacked Adamus Resources The swift and effective response of Inspector Danquah and his team helped to prevent escalation and ensured a peaceful resolution some workers at the mine expressed their desire for the original owner They cited significant struggles since a new company took over including delayed salary payments and inadequate provision of essential work equipment The workers lamented that the new company has failed to invest in new equipment instead relying on outdated machinery that was already in place when she assumed control This lack of investment has seemingly hindered the mine’s productivity and affected the workers’ overall welfare and website in this browser for the next time I comment Receive smart business Adamus Resources Limited (ARL), based in the Western Region, has called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and help halt all illegal mining activities in the area, particularly, on its concession. ARL is a gold mining company at Ellembelle in the Nzema enclave of the Western Region. Adamus Resources has expressed concern over illegal mining activities on its concessions at the company’s Nzema Gold Project. The mining company asserted that the illegal mining activities, also called ‘galamsey,’ is being spearheaded by the Evalue-Ajomoro Gwira Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel  Annor-Kwofie and his alleged counterparts. The company has, therefore, called for a halt of the illegal activities in order to help save the water bodies in the area, particularly the Ankobra River. In a petition dated Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the company wondered why the NDC Constituency Chairman should embroil himself in galamsey activities just a month after his party took over power. The company has also written letters signed by Adamus Resources Nzema Gold Operations General Manager, Kwadwo Opoku Ansah, to the Regional Police Commander and copied to all regional and national stakeholders on the issue. The company accused Annor-Kwofie of collaborating with his alleged Chinese counterparts in the illegal activities, adding that they are already on the verge of destroying the Ankobra River’s banks as well as sections of the Gwira enclave’s virgin forest. Adamus Resources further stated that the ongoing galamsey actions at Akango North in the Nzema area, are negatively impacting its operations despite several attempts to cease it. “The company is not able to stop the activities due to the sophisticated weapons the men guarding Mr. Annor-Kwofie’s employees are wielding. “The constituency chairman is known to have launched other operations in localities such as Amgbasie, Duale, Awulezu, and Kukwaville, all of which are located in the Gwira and Ajomoro enclave of Nzema East Municipality of the region,” the statement noted. It said several stakeholders have expressed deep concern about Annor-Kwofie’s alleged notorious behaviour, which started immediately after the NDC won the 2024 general elections. According to some traditional, opinion leaders and party members, the NDC Chairman’s actions contradict President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to protect water bodies and forest reserves. The management of Adamus Resources claim that Annor-Kwofie’s actions are damaging to their operations, necessitating immediate government intervention. They have also urged the party’s leadership to implement measures to punish Mr. Annor-Kwofie, to dissuade others from engaging in similar conduct. Meanwhile,  the Health, Safety, and Environment Manager of Adamus Resources, Philip Thompson, has confirmed that police in the Nzema area on Friday embarked on an operation to help halt the illegal mining activities. However, the situation has not changed. Efforts by DAILY GUIDE to get Mr. Annor-Kwofie’s side of the story were not successful, as he failed to pick calls from the paper and did not respond to WhatsApp message sent to him. In addition, aldolase strongly interacts with cytoskeletal elements. Aldolase A has also been found in the nucleus of many types of tumors, and is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation (74, 75) In spite of association of serum anti-glycolytic enzyme AAbs with many of those diseases it is not clear whether such AAbs are the direct result of or are made due to the released antigenic proteins from damaged cells including failing photoreceptors in the retina during progression of macular degeneration in AMD or AR All of these findings suggest that AAbs can adversely contribute to retinal and neuro-axonal degeneration Widespread occurrence of autoantibodies (AAbs) against glycolytic enzymes with pathogenic properties in autoimmune diseases anti-enolase AAbs have a potential to induce retinal degeneration not only by the local formation of immune complexes but also by the direct damage to retinal cells and influence their cell function The most common sources regarding AR treatment benefits are published case reports. For example, a brief course of oral corticosteroids in a patient with anti-enolase AAbs caused an improvement in visual fields, disappearance of enolase-α AAbs, partial recovery of the cone response, and complete recovery of the rod response as measured by ERG (124) These findings suggest a pathologic role for enolase-α AAbs in this autoimmune rod/bipolar cell dysfunction In another study, the authors report that anti-GADPH can cross the placenta (125). A seropositive patient with AR and severe myasthenia gravis (MG) experienced a rapid progression of vision loss from driving vision to the hand motion/light perception level over 2-year period (125) The patient then underwent weekly plasmapheresis therapy which led to an improvement of her symptoms She became pregnant during the course of treatment peripheral blood was collected from mother Both samples were seropositive for anti-GAPDH among other AAbs Despite the presence of those AAbs in the cord blood the 6-month old patient appeared to have developed normal visual function and no MG symptoms The number of AR patients benefited from rituximab treatment (128131). The efficacy of rituximab was studied in six patients (12 eyes) administrated as a monotherapy or in combination therapy (132) Some patients in the study had anti-enolase (three patients) and anti-aldolase (one patient) AAbs Stabilization and/or improvement of visual acuity and electroretinography parameters were observed in 75% of patients treated with rituximab and AR are characterized by persistently elevated levels of ant-retinal AAbs B cell depletion therapy based on rituximab delivers promising therapy for those patients larger scale studies of should be pursued in the future the serum presence of anti-glycolytic enzyme AAbs whose importance had been previously dismissed might be without pathological consequences until a failure of the BRB function in effect allowing pathogenic AAbs access to their retinal targets Because of the presence of AAbs with several specificities in a single patient might be responsible for degenerative processes in AR A possible He explains that Bevilacqua welcomed him into his ADAMUS (ADvanced Autonomous MUltiple Spacecraft) lab in the fall of 2021 increasing his level of responsibility over time Bevilacqua has encouraged me to get involved in more and more research and he has always recognized my work in the lab,” Fontegloria Balaguer said adding that he did not anticipate being published while an undergraduate.  “I did not expect this work to be recognized so early in my career,” he said Bevilacqua has ensured that my contributions to the team do not go unnoticed.” Fontdegloria Balaguer, who will pursue a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Dynamics and Controls said being involved in research at the ADAMUS lab has given him invaluable experience “It gives me a perspective of group and work dynamics that cannot be taught in class,” he said it has given me the opportunity of working with different hardware it has also given me the opportunity to manage responsibility and making decisions on how to conduct experimentation.” John said being involved in the research has been immensely helpful to his development as an engineer as he develops his design and CAD (computer-aided design) work so he can one day work as a designer for a rocket company “Being involved in this research will help me immensely in my career path to a point where I can’t even describe how much I have been able to experience the fun part of engineering working pieces of equipment,” John said he had “vastly” broadened his knowledge by reading many other journal papers learning about electrical engineering and how to wire robots as well as learning how to work the interface of a Raspberry Pi computing and programming device “I have grown in so many ways and would argue that my experience with research has prepared me better than almost any class,” John said Posted In: Engineering | Research | Space « Prev Next » Comments (2) Listen to Article Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Dr. Riccardo Bevilacqua, professor of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has published an article in the AIAA Journal that opens a new path to predicting the behavior of fragmentation from explosive warheads The recent publication, which also lists one of Bevilacqua’s Ph.D. students as an author, is an example of the success that the professor, who was recently named Researcher of the Year by Embry-Riddle’s College of Engineering has had in publishing — and in providing his students a platform on which to participate in major projects “I'm not saying I wouldn't be successful without Dr but I definitely wouldn't be where I am right now.” Bevilacqua has secured research funding of more than $1 million students and two undergraduate researchers to participate in his projects and he is the principal investigator or co-investigator on several pending research proposals A nominating statement for the Researcher of the Year award said “all his resident students and visiting researchers end up publishing in top journals,” adding that he has “created an atmosphere of collegiality and friendship” within his research group "Riccardo’s research program highly engages doctoral students offering immense value through research exposure and direct contribution to the discovery of process knowledge," said Jeremy Ernst vice president for research and doctoral programs Bevilacqua’s work not only has disciplinary impact but provides meaningful experiences that shape the research agendas of future scholars." Bevilacqua has done for all of his students is see the potential in us that we sometimes don’t see ourselves He pushes us to reach that potential and does the most for each one of us to make sure we tasked me with working on gravity recovery missions which ultimately led to me receiving the graduate fellowship with NASA He is the one who pushed me to apply for the fellowship in the first place.” Ph.D. student Nicolo Woodward, who first studied with Bevilacqua at the University of Florida and then followed him to Embry-Riddle, was selected last year to receive funding from a GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) grant Woodward said Bevilacqua’s mentorship has had “a huge impact on my educational career and made me the engineer and researcher I am today Thanks to him I was exposed at an early age to complex projects where I have gained invaluable experience in the design testing and assembling processes of building small spacecraft.” Recent graduate Pol Fontdegloria, who will begin an Aerospace Engineering master's at Embry Riddle in the fall said Bevilacqua provided him the opportunity to work with aerospace hardware in open-ended projects “taking me out of my comfort zone and providing me with valuable experience that will help me in my future career Bevilacqua's work and passion for engineering motivated me to keep pursuing my education after graduation and keep doing research with him.” Along with Fontdegloria, recent graduate Spencer John had a paper published with Bevilacqua on the topic of space debris removal in the journal Acta Astronautica Being published as undergraduates was a significant John said that working with Bevilacqua allowed him to apply classroom knowledge to actual hands-on work “From spacecraft simulators to the Helmholtz cage Bevilacqua’s lab introduced me to different ideas and equipment that I likely would have never experienced otherwise,” John said adding that Bevilacqua’s mentorship went beyond the immediate Nathan Adamus is accustomed to using his writing skills to tell stories about the world's top athletes and biggest sporting events The Elmira native has been an editor and writer for a national publication chronicling the history of the Super Bowl and did the same for a magazine looking at the best the NBA has to offer Now he has turned his focus to writing about a tree If you're an old-school NBA fan wondering if his newest subject is Tree Rollins it's actually a collaboration with his mother is titled "The Story of the Whistler Tree" and has a universal message that ties into the purpose of that tree and the characters in the book wanted to write something that would inspire children after Souza Family Books to not follow somebody else's path," said Adamus she has her wool and that helps make stuff Everybody has their own thing that makes them happy it's just a story of figuring out what makes you happy." Adamus is a 1995 graduate of Elmira Notre Dame High School whose extensive writing background also includes contributing to a magazine focused on the history of the NCAA men's basketball tournament He has written for magazines that covered topics such as encounters with Jesus a company geared toward web content and development has been part of some of these publications an artist who received the 2015 Elmira Regional Art Society Palette Awards People's Choice Award for her watercolor NY." The book is illustrated throughout with drawings from Mary Adamus chronicling the story and the tree It was Nathan's idea to have his mom lend her expertise 'These are the images we're looking for.' Kind of build off that She does a very good job of getting an idea of what we're trying to give her." Nathan said one similarity the book shared with his sports ventures is he had to figure out how to make the topic interesting to its intended primary audience — in this case with that background paying off when he decided to tell the tree's story through prose The Whistler Tree's story starts as a seed that wanders from its parents after falling to the ground The Whistler gets help from forest animals and has a chance meeting with a little girl as it grows to learn its life purpose Nathan already has heard back from people who said the book's message is one that resonates "Somebody actually contacted me and said the story is extremely inspirational," he said I think so many children's books these days kids can enjoy but they don't have that message that was so prominent in books when we grew up Mary Adamus said she collaborated with her son over the phone and used various sources of inspiration for the illustrations including research on the tree and old pictures of her niece that served as the model for the girl in the book 'Do you really think you can do this?'" she said How else do you know.' I said it would be silly for me not to try 'My son wrote the story and I wouldn't try to do the illustrations?' If they like them Mother and son were thrilled to have had the chance to work together and to help pass on a meaningful message "I feel it's the hand of God with me in the paintings and the drawings then with the help of other people like Wilson Ong and Len Vogler (who died in August) I never in my life would have guessed that at some point in time I would be the illustrator of a book written by my son The book is available for purchase online for $18.99 through SouzaFamilyBooks.com It was published late last year by Souza Family Books Follow @SGAndrewLegare on Twitter There are few people working in landscape photography today that have more influence on the contemporary scene than Marc Adamus or running his Photo Adventures in the mountainous wilderness of Alaska and western Canada as we are all locked down right now with our workshops canceled or postponed Marc and I had a rare opportunity to sit down over video chat and discuss his unique approach to his images and creativity Something most people don't know about Marc is his deep love for the landscape and the humility with which he enters these stunning areas This is probably the only free online resource where he opens up honestly and sincerely about himself and his work Image by Alister Benn taken on a Trip to Everest in 2015 He talks about having difficulties in school and learning using traditional methods This has led him to improvise and find his own way of doing things Little did he know back then that he would inspire so many others around the world to approach image-making with such passion and technical mastery Alister Benn lives and works on the west coast of Scotland Usually spending many months a year running workshops for Expressive Photography to Spain the Arctic and of course the west of Scotland With his partner Ann Kristin Lindaas they produce weekly videos for their YouTube Channel I always look upon it with profound admiration and extreme envy I've been luck y to hang out with him quite a bit and he's a very motivating guy to be around I went to Marc's webpage to see his body of work but I like his interpretation of each scene taste is always personal and open to interpretation He puts himself in some amazing places with incredible regularity :-) but what I hope came across in the conversation was his humility He is a guy who simply loves the landscape and feels small in it it’s notable that he is one of the people responsible for the style of many landscape photographers but a lot of people are trying to copy his style There is a whole generation of shooters out there modeling their images on his many mothers are enduring the lasting effects A recent Harvard Health study shows 41-percent of women have turned to heavy drinking to cope since the start of this pandemic We headed to a Christian-faith recovery center for women that will open in Waukesha County very soon We all know addiction does not discriminate yet this is the reality for those seeking help in Waukesha County “There is not a residential treatment program in Waukesha County and there hasn’t been since 2008,” said Debra Adamus Now, there soon will be. faith for a parent on top of the usual worries about youngsters adjusting to new teachers and classmates Rachel Adamus was feeling those emotions Monday morning as she got 7-year-old Paul ready for his first day of second grade and prepared 5-year-old Neva for the start of kindergarten With a new school year beginning this week in some states Adamus struggled to balance her fears with her belief that her children need the socialization and instruction that school provides death toll from the coronavirus has hit about 155,000 and cases are rising in numerous places As the bus pulled away from the curb in Adamus’ Dallas “We have kept them protected for so long,” said Adamus who said her aunt died from COVID-19 in Alabama and her husband’s great uncle succumbed to the virus in a New Jersey nursing home “They haven’t been to restaurants We only go to parks if no one else is there We don’t take them to the grocery store And now they’re going to be in the classroom with however many kids for an entire day with a teacher.” The Adamus children are among tens of thousands of students across the nation who were set to resume in-person school Monday for the first time since March Mississippi and Tennessee will also be among those navigating the new academic year this week Many schools that are resuming in-person instruction are also giving parents a stay-at-home virtual option; Adamus Other schools are planning a hybrid approach with youngsters alternating between in-person classes and online learning But an uptick in COVID-19 cases in many states has prompted districts to scrap in-person classes at least for the start of the school year President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have urged schools to reopen the nation’s top infectious-disease expert warned Monday: “There may be some areas where the level of virus is so high that it would not be prudent to bring the children back to school.” “So you can’t make one statement about bringing children back to school in this country It depends on where you are,” he said though that is not mandatory for the 30,000 students in the county Adamus said her son and daughter understand what’s happening at a basic level — that there are germs and they need to stay home “My daughter’s been saying a lot lately `I can’t wait for the germs to go away,'” she said Adamus lives near North Paulding High School where the principal sent a letter over the weekend announcing a football player tested positive for the virus after attending practice said it has received reports of 655 positive tests since workouts for football and other sports started on June 8 Emily Thompson’s son started the sixth grade at Newton County Middle/High School in Decatur said she felt relief watching him get in line to have his temperature taken before entering the building found it was a “nightmare” trying to keep the boy and their two other elementary school-age children on track with their studies She said she is not overly worried about her children getting sick at school “It would be more detrimental not to send them than for them to hang out and do the virtual learning,” she said “I think they’re going to get more interaction at school They just need to be in that setting.” a student at Greenfield-Central Junior High tested positive on the first day back to class and was isolated in the school clinic “This really does not change our plans,” School Superintendent Harold Olin said “We knew that we would have a positive case at some point in the fall We simply did not think it would happen on Day One.” Elwood Junior Senior High suspended in-person classes two days into the school year after at least one staffer tested positive One student who wasn’t starting at she thinks her daughter will be OK academically with online classes which up to 30% of the district’s students have enrolled in But she is worried about Aliyah’s inability to see her friends That’s a big part of her personality,” Williams said Aliyah has been participating in color guard with the school band but Williams said she is now “conflicted” about that too considering the football player’s Thames said that no one at her house is high-risk and that as a former teacher she thinks her children will learn more from teachers than they did from her in the spring “They’re going to actually listen to their teacher it was a fight every day,” Thames said “I absolutely trust our administration and our teachers to do what it takes to keep them safe and keep themselves safe.” dismayed that the Paulding district refused to mandate masks or push back the start date for in-person classes there has been little organized opposition “I desperately want to return to face-to-face teaching but not until it is safe,” Steven Hanft Other parents have to balance their job with schooling decisions Shannon Dunn has to report to her job this week as a cafeteria manager at an elementary school in Dunn said School officials have said they hope to begin in-person classes after Labor Day But Dunn said that will not ease her mind completely “If I hear of the spread of COVID at the school then I’d have to rethink it all over again,” she said schools remained closed across much of Europe which is still in its summer vacation season But schools in Germany’s Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state tailored just for YOU: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCYzPRAYlUPudDDe53x Professional landscape photographers Ryan Dyar and Simon Roppel are here to help us understand why certain decisions in editing process are made Everyone at the table knows about Marc Adamus catching a lot of flak for his art all of us sometimes get the axe in one form or another With Simon Roppel just coming back from a shoot at Mount Assiniboine in Canada we started with the issue of compositing images; superimposing one photo with another in order to create a more pleasing image Roppel often uses a technique called time stacking in which he takes one shot at dusk and another later in the evening to get the best of both worlds He thinks it’s a great thing that digital processing allows us to do Roppel doesn’t understand the resistance that rose up against Adamus’ imagery “It’s all art,” Roppel explains in deceitful simplicity Eventually we are all trying to create something beautiful and emotional Capture techniques as compositing images or time stacking just don’t trigger the emotional response we are looking to illicit colourless sky when he captured his work “Slow Motion.” And while he typically doesn’t like to fake light he does frequently want to improve upon it This example is different with the decision to give the sky some colour where in actuality there was none Gómez agrees and adds that art is supposed to free us instead of confine us to the bounds of collective appreciation He does struggle with finding the words to describe this new form of photography Dyar definitely leans more towards the creative side of this argument straight-out-of-camera purist side isn’t his way of creating art the stars in his work “Night Watch” were photographed about an hour after the exposure he used for the foreground areas He put them together in post-processing using a Lighter Color blend mode you can prevent having to dial in a higher ISO that will lower the quality of that foreground people often ask if those goats were real or a composite Dyar wouldn’t feel comfortable with making such a composite and prefers keeping such elements real and natural Ted Gore and I talked in a previous episode of this series about the use of bracketing exposures to capture a wider dynamic range While camera’s today are doing such a great job at capturing high contrast scenes in single exposure Charles Wyckoff made images of nuclear explosions that got published in all sorts of magazines like Time and Life Ansel Adams was the landscape photographer’s king of photo manipulation and he is revered as one of the greatest photographers who ever lived His “zone system” is basically dark room (film) HDR in which he sought to show detail in shadows and highlights as he saw fit This is a photo by Charles Wyckoff of the fireball a few microseconds after detonation The fireball measured 3 1/2 miles in diameter We all use all sorts and kinds of photography ‘life-hacks’ to make that stand-out work of art We either manipulate light before it hits the sensor or stretch the histogram in post to make it more pleasing to the eye Using sheets of glass or resin in front of the lens too is a form of manipulation in order to let the camera record more data than it initially can with a single Gómez doesn’t put graduated neutral density filters in front of his lens anymore If the dynamic range is too wide to show both details in shadows and highlights he instead shoots two images at different exposures and blends them together in post-processing Gómez applied a simple blending technique like this in his seascape “Easter Island” “It's a wonderful day to be yours” by Felipe Gómez Dyar uses the same technique in scenes of extreme contrasting light He stacks the images as layers in Photoshop throws a mask on the top one and paints in the brighter or darker exposure by hand Many consumer grade cameras and smartphones alike By rapidly firing a couple of shots using an electronic shutter at different exposures the camera takes mere seconds to blend them together It’s interesting to note that this technology starts to become mainstream Do the professionals and their experimentation with capture and processing techniques have any causal connection with this technology becoming available for the masses I think that as the professionals start to experiment more demand more from their equipment and do more in less time it is this technology that then starts to percolate down into the consumer market features will be put into professional gear as well In the years to come, cameras will be enabling photographers to do even more after we press the shutter button. We will be able to make decisions about selective depth-of-field and perspective blending, as the multi-lensed camera of tomorrow promises to record much more information than can be shown on any print or any screen at a certain point in time Felipe Gómez will be pleased with advancements such as light field technology He points out that you have to be very attentive to capture the DOF that you're after in a landscape image In a picture where there is a very close object like a flower or rock it's crucial to use the stacking technique to get everything in focus And the diffractive effects of f/22 are actually detrimental to image sharpness It would be great when the lens’s sweet spot can be used over and over again for the most sharpness and least amount of optical aberrations Capturing the same composition with multiple lenses at once has another benefit Perspective blending is a great way to deal with the problem ultra wide lenses are creating He used perspective blending a couple times before to avoid pincushion distortion in which you need a big foreground and want the mountains to stay as big as they should “That really just depends on the scene and what I'm hoping to achieve.” Perspective blends can be great but as with blending for added dynamic range forcing a technique on a scene that doesn’t really need it Technology should be in service of a photographer’s artistic choices; not the other way around With technology coming to the aid of the photographer to capture more data to work with the pros will still be doing things manually for a long time End even when professional grade cameras with such features start hitting the shelves the pros will still be experimenting with any advancements that are at our future disposal Don’t be afraid that computers will be in charge of the creative process in the future Tomorrow’s technology will just capture more data and creative decisions will still left to the artist Felipe Gómez let his camera capture four different exposures to capture the dynamic range he encountered at Cerro Torre in Patagonia But he still decided which part of those 4 exposures made it into his work Gómez agrees with Ted Gore’s previous comment about the hardship of photography in this place he knows Patagonia to be a very dynamic and hard place to take pictures so you don't have all the time of the world You have to be familiar with your equipment and quick on your feet under these rapidly changing even transient conditions that last mere seconds or photographs we use to create art; a good sense of timing is still an important aspect of communicating reality through two dimensional imagery Roppel’s “The Perfect Moment” is one of his favourites because of such transient conditions Gómez mentioned He composed that shot as his girlfriend convinced him to stay and wait while he was ready to pack up and leave the scene hail and rain fell from the sky with a great sunrise from behind them He says he never saw a show like that before and he’s happy that he captured it all on camera That brings us to the true value of the pursuit of photography Are you selling images based on what others think of your work or do you first and foremost shoot for yourself And how big a part do you think that processing is of photography I truly believe that the near future of post-processing holds more discussion as more and more options will open up after we press the button It’s not the end of the debate for what is or isn’t photography but we can start to agree upon what is or isn’t art I think we need to get off our high horse of judgment and be more open to though-provoking imagery altogether I see good photographers around the globe getting discouraged because of what others think and that’s a shame Dyar agrees that it's best for each individual photographer to find his or her own moral compass and boundaries and stop trying to force those boundaries on anyone else; whether you think composites are wrong or right I also think that artists would do their selves a lot of good by not taking criticism too personal Even if a critique is aimed at the photographer and not the photograph A professional and welcoming approach to someone’s opinion works wonders if you reflect that criticism back onto your work of art we are all trying to get better at what we do In the next and final episode of this series about reality versus beauty we’re wrapping things up with two more gifted photographers who show us an otherworldly All images and paraphrases used with permission of the respective photographers, Ryan Dyar, Simon Roppel and Felipe Gómez While his dramatic landscape photography has gained international acclaim his pursuit of the light is primarily a means to get to know himself Daniel teaches introspective landscape photography around the world through running tours and workshops Even if all of these were computer graphics I'd still think these guy's 'works' are amazing art It's the finished result not the canvas that matters surely This depends entirely on what your goal is as a photographer and photography merely happens to be a medium that you choose to "gather your inspiration" from know that you are in fact departing from photography itself then you're on the right path for your own personal vision and demand to be called a photographer and nothing else in my opinion you should take a long hard look at where you're drawing the line in photomanipulation and be honest and open about how you create your images and never get angry if people call you out on a "fake" (composite) or are slightly less impressed if/when you reveal that an image is heavily photoshopped Agreed 100% Personally I only make the most of what I've taken and I draw the line at replacing skies etc If I feel the final image would benefit it Where my line gets blurry though is with some of the portraits I've been experimenting with For example a shot with a model on a beach (camera on tripod) then a long exposed image without the model and the two images blended together Is this (by your argument) still photography The image would be impossible to achieve in one shot -unless my model can stand perfectly still for say 15 minutes I'm not sure but I don't mind explaining to anyone who asks how I got the result but I still consider myself a photographer not a composite artist perhaps I'm the only one here having issues with the reporting Not an issue with the idea of the articles not at all as it is an interesting conversation Here's where this is coming from...."But in another photo; “Goat Crossing” Dyar wouldn’t feel comfortable with making such a composite and prefers keeping such elements real and natural." Sorry that goat is a composite...not even a question No way the water blur happens AND that goat is frozen in that position So again there is a level of misrepresentation taking place that doesn't express the truth no way that these "elements (are) real and natural." Are we lemmings Maybe it is a "real and natural" stuffed goat Here is why I hesitate to call people out these days on pretty much all but the most blatantly obvious photoshop hack-jobs: Based on my own personal experience photographing poeple near running water (though not wild goats) ...I'd wager that it's entirely possible for that shutter speed to be the same for both the animal and the running water The water's blur is not really that smooth if you look closely you can still see plenty of splash lines indicating to me that the shot might have only been a 1/2 second exposure or something Most animals are even better at holding perfectly still than a human being (they have four legs) so I'd bet that this goat if pausing for a moment of curiosity about the photographer or the camera (if it was captured by a remote camera) might have very well held perfectly sill for 1/2 sec or even 1".. I'd bet that the more likely scenario is this: The photographer used a camera with extreme dynamic range such that they could shoot a neutral exposure at 1/4 or 1/8 sec for the animals and then blend in the brighter 1" or 1/2 sec exposure for the water then of course the 1/25 or 1/50 exposure for the sky (Now both Canon and Nikon can do 3EV increments for bracketing so this shot could have literally happened as we see it and be captured at the same exact moment as a bracketed exposure I'm not personally opposed to merging different exposures to capture better water blur without sacrificing image quality elsewhere they're created by shortcomings of a particular lens+sensor combo And obviously the whole situation is open to interpretation by each individual artist I would change the title to "Beautiful vs Commercial" It seems that today who doesn't create lights or/and moves objects within the frame using PS is a purist Of course it's a good advertisement to sell your works but I would consider the fact that photography goes beyond 500px and Facebook Try to have a look at these links (below) and please tell me if you would define these pictures just "Real" There are lots of creativity and strong messages while here above in your article I can see the need to spectacularize everything but I would suggest you to use the word "Art" with care and not only to justify your ideas https://www.gdtfoto.de/seiten/gdt-european-wildlife-photographer-of-the-... http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/wpy/gallery/2015/adult.html "Photographs are like gems: the real and the synthetic are often physically indistinguishable but there is no question as to the ultimate value A photograph that depicts a moment of real life whether that of a human activity or of the natural world is of a higher order than the most perfect replication created by or for the camera with luck removed from the formula." there will always be purists on opposite sides of the spectrum Ansel Adams is not a purist by anyone elses standard He probably did the most darkroom manipulation during his time and yet.. If he did his art today I'm quite sure he will be maximizing whatever tool or technique that is available to perfect his photograph I'm sure he would still be called a photographer After all we don't hire graphic composite artists to cover our wedding no matter how much digital manipulation she does Mikolai Adamus has shared with us his proposal for a “New Aquarium” to activate the Southern Pier in Gdynia Using the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence to guide the design the rectangular structure burrows into the pier becoming secondary to the surrounding landscape the aquarium is designed to transparent and “a place where architecture is subordinated to function devoid of unnecessary detail.” More details From the designer: The main emphasis of the design is not so much the creation of a building, but an attempt to generate a place. The South Pier is an area of unique character. Its farthest point is definitely the most important part. The local land use plan assumes that the end of the pier should remain without buildings. Nevertheless, the question arises of how to make people more keen to pass time at this location.  © Mikolai AdamusA Building for the Square The proposed construction consists of four main interdependent parts: the elevation, the part above the square, the roof and the part below the square. It is only the juxtaposition of these elements that enables the full potential of this location to be realized.  © Mikolai AdamusThe elevation: The pier end will be elevated by 2 meters above its current height. The square itself will only be raised to the height required so as to be able to see the view at the end of the South Pier and so as to provide a destination towards which to walk.  The part above the square: The part above the elevation forms a square protected from the weather. At the same time, it is possible to see from the section above the square what is going on below.  © Mikolai AdamusThe roof: This constitutes an additional viewing terrace. It is another type of raised square, this time uncovered, which enables an extensive view to be surveyed, for example during the regattas that frequently take place in Gdynia.  The part below the square: Elevating the square provides the chance to create features in this place, which could attract new users to the end of the pier and also interest users, who have already reached it.  Achievement of the greatest possible transparency was the most goal. The idea was for the user inside to feel sheltered from the weather in the square. However, the building was to present the smallest possible barrier to an observer outside looking at the views. At night, the glass elevations of the building would act as a lamp illuminating the surroundings.  Apart from transparency, flexibility constituted a second aspect for the upper part of the building. During normal use, the building should be as transparent as possible, but it should have the facilities required for the organization of various types of special events, such as lectures, exhibitions or banquets.  © Mikolai AdamusFibonacci and the Golden Ratio I attempted to use the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence in order to create compositional lines to define the fundamental geometrical expression of my building I used these proportions to create the axis and elevation of the building This seemed to be even more appropriate given the links between the function of the building and nature the fruit of the pineapple shows eight such lines running in one direction and five or thirteen lines in the opposite direction You'll now receive updates based on what you follow Personalize your stream and start following your favorite authors If you have done all of this and still can't find the email Adamus Resources (Pty) Limited (Adamus Australia) has denied the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources' claims regarding the ongoing dispute over the ownership of Adamus Resources Limited (Adamus Ghana) The company has debunked claims that there was no constituted Interim Management Committee (IMC) and that the pendency of certain applications was hindering the formation of the IMC in response to a press release issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources regarding the ongoing dispute over the ownership of Adamus Resources Limited (Adamus Ghana) stated that the Ministry's press release was "very unfortunate and made in utter bad faith."
